4. Air-core photonic band-gap fibers: the impact of surface modes

Abstract

We study the dispersion and leakage properties for the recently reported low-loss photonic band-gap fiber by Smith et al. [Nature 424, 657 (2003)]. We find that surface modes have a significant impact on both the dispersion and leakage properties of the fundamental mode. Our dispersion results are in qualitative agreement with the dispersion profile reported recently by Ouzounov et al. [Science 301, 1702 (2003)] though our results suggest that the observed long-wavelength anomalous dispersion is due to an avoided crossing (with surface modes) rather than band-bending caused by the photonic band-gap boundary of the cladding., Comment: 7 pages including 4 figures. Abstract

We present new evidence supporting the quasi-unit cell description of the $Al_{72}Ni_{20}Co_{8}$ decagonal quasicrystal which shows that the solid is composed of repeating, overlapping decagonal cluster columns with broken 10-fold symmetry. We propose an atomic model which gives a significantly improved fit to electron microscopy experiments compared to a previous proposal by us and to alternative proposals with 10-fold symmetric clusters., Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figures, use epsfig.sty and revtex revised text and figures

Abstract

Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections usually cause haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) equally in male and female children. This study investigated the localization of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) in human brain and kidney tissues removed from forensic autopsy cases in Japan. A fatal case was used as a positive control in an outbreak of diarrhoeal disease caused by STEC O157:H7 in a kindergarten in Urawa in 1990. Positive immunodetection of Gb3 was significantly more frequent in female than in male distal and collecting renal tubules. To correlate this finding with a clinical outcome, a retrospective analysis of the predictors of renal failure in the 162 patients of two outbreaks in Japan was performed: one in Tochigi in 2002 and the other in Kagawa Prefecture in 2005. This study concludes renal failure, including HUS, was significantly associated with female sex, and the odds ratio was 4·06 compared to male patients in the two outbreaks. From 2006 to 2009 in Japan, the risk factor of HUS associated with STEC infection was analysed. The number of males and females and the proportion of females who developed HUS were calculated by age and year from 2006 to 2009. In 2006, 2007 and 2009 in adults aged >20 years, adult women were significantly more at risk of developing HUS in Japan.

Abstract

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are useful genetic markers for the management and conservation of commercially important species such as salmon. Informative markers can be derived from data obtained for other purposes. We used restriction endonuclease data from earlier work to identify potentially useful restriction sites in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). With the aid of a newly generated complete mitochondrial DNA sequence (accession number AP010773), we identified the SNP responsible for each restriction site variant, designed rapid genotyping assays, and surveyed the SNPs in more than 401) individuals. The restriction site analysis and the SNP genotyping assays were almost perfectly concordant. Some reasons for the non-concordance were identified and discussed. Les polymorph ism es mononucleotidiques (SNP) sont des marqueurs genetiques utiles pour la gestion et la conservation d'especes ayant une importance commerciale comme le saumon. Il est possible d'identifier des marqueurs informatifs a partir de donnees obtenues a d'autres fins. Les auteurs ont employe les donnees sur les sites de restriction, obtenues lors de travaux anterieurs, pour identifier des sites de restriction potentiellement utiles chez le saumon keta (Oncorhynchus keta). A l'aide d'une sequence du genome mitochondrial recemment completee (numero d'acces AP010773), les auteurs ont identifie le SNP responsable pour chaque variation au sein d'un site de restriction, developpe un test de genotypage rapide, et caracterise le SNP au sein de plus de 400 individus.
