Background and Aims Floral developmental studies are crucial for understanding the evolution of floral structures and sexual systems in angiosperms. Within the monocot order Poales, both subfamilies of Eriocaulaceae have unisexual flowers bearing unusual nectaries. Few previous studies have investigated floral development in subfamily Eriocauloideae, which includes the large, diverse and widespread genus Eriocaulon. To understand floral variation and the evolution of the androecium, gynoecium and floral nectaries of Eriocaulaceae, we analysed floral development and vasculature in Eriocaulon and compared it with that of subfamily Paepalanthoideae and the related family Xyridaceae in a phylogenetic context. Methods Thirteen species of Eriocaulon were studied. Developmental analysis was carried out using scanning electron microscopy, and vasculature analysis was carried out using light microscopy. Fresh material was also analysed using scanning electron microscopy with a cryo function. Character evolution was reconstructed over well-resolved phylogenies. Key Results Perianth reductions can occur due to delayed development that can also result in loss of the vascular bundles of the median sepals. Nectariferous petal glands cease development and remain vestigial in some species. In staminate flowers, the inner stamens can emerge before the outer ones, and carpels are transformed into nectariferous carpellodes. In pistillate flowers, stamens are reduced to staminodes and the gynoecium has dorsal stigmas. Conclusions Floral morphology is highly diverse in Eriocaulon , as a result of fusion, reduction or loss of perianth parts. The nectariferous carpellodes of staminate flowers originated first in the ancestor of Eriocaulaceae; petal glands and nectariferous branches of pistillate flowers originated independently in Eriocaulaceae through transfer of function. We present a hypothesis of floral evolution for the family, illustrating a shift from bisexuality to unisexuality and the evolution of nectaries in a complex monocot family, which can contribute to future studies on reproductive biology and floral evolution in other groups. The anatomy of rhizomes and roots of 14 species of Bromeliaceae that occur in the cerrado biome were studied with the aim of pointing out particular anatomical features of the family and possible adaptations related to the environment. All the rhizomes are similar although some have root regions growing inside the cortex. In some species the vascular cylinder of the rhizome is clearly limited from the cortex. The roots are also very similar, although the coating tissue differs in roots growing inside the rhizome or externally to it and the cortex has a variable organization according to the region. The studied species present anatomical features that are associated to water absorption and storage, showing that they are adapted to the cerrado environment. Leaf venation in the subfamily Myrtoideae Nied. (Myrtaceae) was examined and the unique features in each subtribe were defined using leaves of 44 species belonging to subtribes Myrtinae (9 genera), Myrciinae (5 genera), and Eugeniinae (8 genera). Although the camptodromous-brochidodromous pattern is dominant among the species, the mixed acrodromous-brochidodromous pattern is also present. For each species, secondary venation pattern, ultimate marginal venation, tertiary venation and areolation, as well as presence or absence of the intramarginal vein were described.

With the aim of pointing out useful character for taxonomic purposes, westudied the leaf of the Erythroxylum species that grow on Cerrado vegetation in São Paulo state, Brazil (E. ambiguum, E. campestre, E. cuneifolium, E. deciduum, E. microphyllum, E. nanum, E. pelleterianum, E. suberosum and E. tortuosum). They are all covered by granules or platelets of epicuticular waxes of sparse or dense distribution. The venation is of camptodromous - brochidodromous pattern, the mesophyll is dorsiventral and the stomata occur only on the abaxial surface. Some features, such as acuminated margin, midrib region with adaxial projection, lateral vascular bundle surrounded by a parenchymatous sheath and petiole with vascular tissue in an opened arc-shape, are widely distributed amongst the studied species. Others, like rounded margin, midrib with only one vascular bundle, papillose epidermis on the abaxial surface, and occasionally bi-layered on the adaxial surface, besides scattered sclereids on the mesophyll, occur only in some taxa. The occurrence or not of these leaf features allowed the elaboration of an identification key for the Erythroxylum species.

With the aim of recognising useful features for taxonomic purposes, we studied the leaf anatomy of 25 taxa that are morphologically related (13 of Aechmea subgenus Lamprococcus, three of Ronnbergia E. Morren & André, four of Araeococcus Brongn. and five of Lymania Read). Although all leaves are hypostomatic and have a dorsiventral mesophyll with a hypodermis, they show some features that characterise each species. These features include, the stomata position on leaf surface, the presence or absence of substomatic occlusions, the occurrence or not of fibre clusters in the mesophyll, the nature of the cell walls of the vascular bundle sheaths and the cell morphology of the diaphragm that interrupt the air channels. By associating these characters we have elaborated an identification key for the studied taxa, based on the leaf structure.

Stem morphology and anatomy of nine species of Orchidaceae (Catasetum fimbriatum, Dichaea bryophila, Encyclia calamara, Epidendrum campestre, Epidendrum secundum, Miltonia flavescens, Pleurothallis smithiana, Stanhopea lietzei and Vanda tricolor) were investigated. A comparative study of these species showed that the internal structure of the rhizome, aerial shoot and pseudobulb was homogeneous. The rhizomes and aerial shoots are covered by an uniseriated epidermis, have a parenchymatous cortex and collateral vascular bundles arranged in two or more rings in the central cylinder. The psudobulbs have an uniseriated epidermis covered by a thick cuticle and vascular bundles irregularly scattered throughout the parenchymatous ground tissue which are formed by large and small cells and have many intercelular spaces.

Destas 25 espécies, 14 ocorrem no Brasil. Among these 25 species, 14 are found in Brazil. The majority of the Brazilian species are found mainly in high areas of Minas Gerais State, being generally restricted to the campos rupestres. Materials from 25 national herbaria were analyzed in this work and the observation of some species in their natural habitat became theirs characterization and delimitation easier. The most important characters used to delimitate the species were the calyx teeth length and shape, the indumentum and shape of the and the size and indumentum of the leaves. As the main taxonomic news it could be mentioned: 1) the proximity of the genus to Esterhazya J. C. Mikan, was reinforced here by the characters of the stamens and the corolla shape; 2) Agalinis bandeirensis and A. linarioides considered of doubtful delimitation - were recognized as distinct species; 3) The recognition of A. nana and A. itambensis as new species was reinforced in this paper, mainly by observing them in their natural habitat. As regards parasitism, the North American species of Agalinis are referred as hemiparasites, but there are no references about this fact to the Brazilian species. Then it was analyzed roots of nine Agalinis species, which presented structures very similar to the haustoria described to others parasite Scrophulariaceae. The seriate sections of such structures evidenced that there is a vascular connection between the Agalinis roots and the host roots in which they were connected. For the first time, this fact confmned the haustorial nature of these structures and the occurrence of parasitism among theyBrazilian species of Agalinis. The position of A. glandulosa in this genus, which belonged to Schizosepala, was strengthened here by the confirmation of parasitism in these species. Its radicular anatomy showed great similarity to the A. communis' s one, reinforcing the position of A. glandulosa in the Agalinis genus even more Mestrado Mestre em Biologia Vegetal

Species of tank-dependent bromeliad usually have a reduced root system and thus, in addition to the photosynthetic activity, the leaves absorb water and nutrients that accumulate in the tank. It is expected that structural variations in the foliar tissues, due to different positions in the rosette, are related to the capacity to absorb and store water, and help in the physiological characterization of Aechmea distichantha Lem. Anatomical analyzes were performed on apex and leaf base samples occupying different positions along the rosette of A. distichantha. The analysis of phenotypic plasticity to evaluate the amplitude of the structural variations was done using histometry data. The cell wall structure was evaluated by immunocytochemistry assays using monoclonal antibodies. From the analyzes carried out, it was possible to verify that the leaves of A. distichantha present structural variations of the cell wall and phenotypic plasticity according to the analyzed leaf region and the position of the leaf in the rosette, the aquifer parenchyma being the most plastic tissue. The basal region of the leaves, mainly of the internal ones, presents / displays greater amount of parenchyma aquifer and pectin with high methyl esterification of the wall that facilitates the absorption of water in the initial stages of development. The apical region of the outer leaves in the rosette is more specialized for the photosynthetic activity, and presents less amount of aquifer parenchyma and more rigid cellular walls. Thus, from this work, it is noted that A. distichantha presents a structural and functional gradient both in the different regions of the leaf, and in leaves occupying different positions in the rosette. This thesis is organized in two Chapters that aimed: a. describe and review the root anatomy in the Pleurothallidinae subtribe, b. point out radicular anatomical characters that can identify taxa, c. reconstruct the history of root characters using GenBank genetic data from ITS region, and finally d. to show the ontogeny of tilosomes in Anathallis sclerophylla. In the first Chapter we analyzed the root anatomy of 82 species distributed in 29 genera, covering eight of the nine Affinities within the Pleurothallidinae. We conclude that bistratified velamen is common, occurring in the eight Affinities and in more than 75% of the sampled species. Single layered velamen still occur in Lepanthes calodictyon, in the same way three, four, and five layer occurs in Restrepia and Masdevallia Affinities. We reinforce the taxonomic importance of the velamen parietal thickening, presenting them in detail such a velamen-exodermis complex organogram. The morphological patterns and their distribution between the velamen layers are a rich information source for the genera recognition in the subtribe. We show the tilosomes of 39 species and note that simpler morphologies occur at the early divergent Affinities, and more complex morphologies occur in late divergent ones. In exodermis, “O” or “∩” thickening occurs mainly in basal genera, thin-walled exodermis can be interpreted as a derived apomorphic feature, and “U” thickened exodermis in Barbosella is the only synapomorphy found in the subtribe. Multivariate analysis show high importance for the cortex and vascular cylinder characters to resolution of the morphological dendrogram. The cortical parenchyma can be homogeneous as in Specklinia, or heterogeneous as in Pabstiella. The vascular cylinder with many protoxylem arches occurs more frequently in basal Affinities, opposed to the reduced vascular cylinder with few protoxylem arches, characteristic of the more derived Affinities. Perhaps due to the great diversity of the group and few morphological markers, the root characters are strongly homoplasic, but their combination can identify at least the genera of a morphotype. We still find direction in root apomorphies incidence when we associate morphological with genetic data. Thus, this chapter contributes substantially to the understanding of root anatomy and the phenotypic behavior of the Pleurothallidnae roots. In the second Chapter, the published article describes the tilosomes ontogeny of the Anathallis sclerophylla root. We conclude that tilosomes are wall-ingrowths, similar those found in transfer cells, which develop as cellulosic papillae in the endovelamen inner periclinal wall, over the exodermis passage cells, at the root elongation zone. These structures probably function as wall-membrane apparatus, to increase the solute transport between epidermis and cortex in young root regions. The developed tilosome wall is basically lignified, with little or no deposition of callose in the plasmodesmata, and there are suberin gaps inside its apparatus. Due to these specific morphologic features, they seem to be straightly related to the water balance in the mature root. CAPES: 001

Melastomataceae Juss, the largest family of the order Myrtales, is widely distributed pantropical. The family is one of the largest of the Brazilian flora, with about 150 genera and 4,500 species. Melastomataceae is divided into 11 tribes, with Melastomeae Bartl., Miconieae DC. and Microlicieae Naudin the most important tribes in Brazil, and in Brazil can be found about 1/3 of its species. Microlicia D. Don the largest genus of Microliciae tribe and one of the most representative genera, with about 120 species, mainly concentrated to the “campos rupestres” in the Central Brazil. Although Microlicia reaching its greatest diversity in the Brazilian “campos rupestres”, some species are widely distributed and can be found in other vegetation types such as cerrado, paths, swamps and hydromorphic fields. Microlicia is considered a problematic genus among the Melastomataceae, and their species are recognized only by combining different traits, making it difficult to accurately identify several of them. In an attempt to help the delimitation of the most problematic species, in the last decade a great effort has been devoted to the study of Microlicia leaf anatomy and today around 1/3 of these species have had the leaf anatomy described. The most common features are: unisseriate epidermis, amphistomatic leaves, presence of trichomes and emergences, isobilateral or homogeneous mesophyll and presence of phenolic compounds in leaf tissues, particularly in the palisade parenchyma cells. However, despite the many similar features, Microlicia leaves also exhibit different anatomical characteristics that could help identify the most problematic species. Considering the large number of Microlicia species with the leaf anatomy known, the polymorphism already reported for several species of the genus, and the possible plastic potential of the leaf anatomy that the species of widely spread could present, the goals of this work were: a) analyze the leaf anatomy of nine Microlicia from “campos rupestres”; b) analyze and interpret the leaf anatomy of four species occurring in others environments, beyond the “campos rupestres” and c) through similarity analysis performed using the anatomical leaf traits of the all Microlia studied to date, analyze the groups of similar species formed and identify characters that favor the formation of the same. Terrestrial species constitute almost 20% of the family and are included mainly in the subfamily Orchidoideae, to which belong the tribe Cranichideae. In Brazil Cranichideae is represented by species of subtribes Cranichidinae, Goodyerinae and Spiranthinae. In this study, vegetative organs of the following species were analised: Cranichis candida and Prescottia oligantha (Cranichidinae), Microchilus arietinus and Zeuxine strateumatica (Goodyerinae), Cyclopogon apricus, C. congestus, C. variegatus, Mesadenella cuspidata, Pteroglossa roseoalba and Sauroglossum nitidum (Spiranthinae). The aims were to find structural features related to the terrestrial habit and potentially useful in the taxonomic delimitation of the group. The roots are, proportionally, the most developed organ of the plant, showing characteristics that might help in absorbing or retaining water, such as: velamen/exoderm system, in all species, and tilossomes, in the Cranichidinae and Spiranthinae representatives. Leaves possess an one-layered epidermis covered by a thin cuticle and a narrow and homogeneous mesophyll. Vascular bundles of the midrib are enclosed by parenchymatic cells and the xylem conducting cells are organised in pairs or “inverted V”, as in other Cranichideae

Croton comprises approximately 1,200 species with bisexual flowers and is a taxonomically and morphologically complex group. Astraea, which was recently separated from Croton and shares innumerous morphological characteristics, is still a poorly studied genus. The nature of the floral whorls, especially the nectaries and the filamentous structures of the pistillate flowers, is a controversial subject in both genera. Some studies with Croton flowers have examined the development of ovules and seeds, while others have only described the morphology of mature pollen grains. Very little is currently known about Astraea. Analyses of the development, vascularization, and morphology of the staminate and pistillate flowers of Croton and Astraea demonstrated that the filamentous structures of the pistillate flowers represent transformed petals, and that nectaries represent transformed stamens in pistillate flowers; stamens were occasionally observed in place of nectaries. Many characteristics were observed that support the segregation of Astraea from Croton, although the two genera do share numerous morphological features. An examination of the development of the anthers and ovules of two species of Astraea and seven species of Croton demonstrated the presence of styloid crystals in the tapetum as well as idioblasts with druses in the endothecia; ovules with two teguments of epidermal origin and the differentiation of a functional megaspore in a micropylar position were also observed. These aspects, described here for the first time for the family, need to be further investigated to determine their occurrence and distribution within the taxon, and to evaluate their taxonomic potential.

The Orchidaceae, easily recognized by the modified aspect of their flowers, comprises more than 20,000 cosmopolitan species distributed in five subfamilies. Aiming to complement the information about the structure of the vegetative organs of the representatives of this subtribe, the anatomy of roots, stems and leaves of some Brazilian taxa, may of them of uncertain and little known taxonomic position under the anatomical point of view, were studied. Comparing the results obtained with the ones described for the other representatives of the same subtribe, an anatomical uniformity among the organs of the Brazilian species and the ones previously studied was observed corroborating the inclusion of Zygopetalinae in the Cymbidieae monofiletic tribe. It was also observed an uniformity in the anatomical characteristics, within the genera, indicating that many aspects can be useful in the systematic analysis of the subtribe

With the objective of recognizing the commonest leaf pattern of the trees and shrubs of the cerrado vegetation, we studied the leaf morphology of 70 dicotyledons and the leaf anatomy of 30 species well represented in this bioma. The leaves are mostly simple, vary from mesophyll to microphyll, and the blades are eliptical with entire edges and with convex base and apex. They are mostly dorsiventral and hypostomatic, and covered by trichomes and thick layer of wax and cuticle; the vascular bundles are surrounded by a sheath of fibers. The mesophyll has a developed palisade tissue, dispersed sclerified cells and idioblasts bearing crystals and phenolic compounds. The anatomical results were compared with the described for other species from the same biome and for the families that the studied species belong. The possible meaning of these features is discussed under an adaptative and evolutive point of view.

A very important morphological characteristic observed in ali Lafoensia species, is the presence of a sub apical gland in its leaves and characterized as hydathodes. However these hydathodes are atypical mainly by the absence of stomata and not exclusively xylem vascularized. Considering that hydathodes and extrafloral nectaries are structurally similar, this research had the following objectives: to characterize structurally and hystochemically the apical leaf gland of Lafoesnsia vandelliana, describe its development and chemically analyzed the secreted exsudate To carry this on, leaf samples of six developmental stages were collected, fixed and embedded in paraffin or historesin according to standard methodology. Transversal and longitudinal sections were obtained using a rotatory microtome. One fraction of the total sections were stained with safranin and astra blue and the remaining were used to verify the presence of polysaccharides, lipids and phenolic compounds. Samples were cleared as standard methodology and fixed and prepared as usual methodology for Scanning Electron Microscope. Exsudate was submitted to paper chromatography, monodirectional, in multiple sequence to verify the presence of sugars. Lafoensia glands begins to form in the first leaf developmental stages and the secretion is evident up to stage IV, being imperceptible in final stages and in old leaves. With gland development, xylem and phloem converge to the nectariferous parenchyma, towards the abaxial leaf surface, and the cells of this parenchyma divide increasing the tissue volume. At the same time, the adaxial epidermis projects to the exterior forming a depression in the abaxial surface that is entirely covered by an epidermis that lacks stomata and remains intact in the initial development stages. Secreted nectar accumulates in the nectariferous parenchyma, determining an epidermis protuberance and degrading some subepidermal secretory cells. Possibly, the secretion is eliminated through pores in the cuticle, because it was not observed ruptures on the epidermis. However, the epidermis is not a secretory structure and these suppositions should confirmed by more detailed studies using transmission electron microscopy. Leaf gland of Lafoensia vandelliana should be characterized as an extrafloral nectary is xylem and phloem irrigated in approximately equal proportions. In the exsudate was verified the presence of glucose, fructose and sucrose and also was observed ants visiting that gland Doutorado Doutor em Biologia Vegetal

Background and Aims. A recently described Brazilian species, Lacandonia brasiliana, shares with its longer established putative sister species from Mexico, L. schismatica, inverted floral patterning (carpels surrounding stamens) that is almost unique among angiosperms. We present a detailed ontogenetic study of L. brasiliana for comparison with other members of the tribe Triurideae (Triuridaceae) to explore the possible evolutionary origins of "inside-out" flowers. Methods. Wild-source populations of L. brasiliana were compared morphologically and ontogenetically with related species of Triurideae, using light and scanning electron microscopy. Key Results. Relatively few morphological differences separate flowers of L. brasiliana and L. schismatica. Both species have tepals with late-developing subapical appendages. In both species, the three central (almost sessile) anthers develop precociously with respect to the carpels; the anthers remain closed, and fertilization is achieved via pollen-tube growth from germinating pollen grains of the same cleistogamous flower. Carpels are initiated on fascicles. Conclusions. The close similarity between the two Lacandonia species makes it unlikely that they arose independently from two separate homeotic transformation events; they could either represent sister species or two populations of a single disjunct species. Our study underlines the problematic generic and species boundaries within Triurideae. We present an evolutionary scenario of character evolution in Triuridaceae. The inside-out Lacandonia flower could have resulted from a stabilized homeotic transformation; this hypothesis is not in conflict with constrasting theories of the origin of the Triuridaceae flower, which coincided with a shift to unisexuality. The unisexual yet highly plastic flowers that are typical of Triuridaceae could have pre-adapted the origin of the extraordinary Lacandonia morphology.
