Owing to enormous and unprecedented expansion in technological, scientific and economic activities in the past few decades the demand for learning at least one foreign language has occurred. Moreover, new developments in Educational Psychology have given rise to an increasing emphasis on importance of learners’ needs, interests, motivation, relevance of what and how they are learning (the British Council International Seminar on Teaching English for Specific Purposes, 1996). Similarly, today just like most methodologists and language experts, Fredericks (1996:1) assumes that language-training programs should provide optimal learning opportunities for all students through recognition of and provision for each individual’s unique patterns of growth and development. The needs of the students in the same geographical region may have lots of common sights, and the success of one implementation should be shared with the neighboring countries to disseminate the success for a more fruitful world. This is one of the obligations to achieve the objectives of a true globalization process. Internet is the best tool to achieve such an objective. In this study, a sample English preparatory class model is introduced. This sample model was designed for the students at Gazi University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in 1996-1997 academic year (about 32 weeks).

Literature is one of the most important elements of foreign language teaching. As a part of culture, literature taking place in English languageteaching contributes to students in different ways. As reading, understanding and studying literary works require to be at high levels forthe students both at language and literary competence, literature cannottake place in the beginning level foreign language classes at primaryschools. Young learners and teenagers will enjoy the literary texts which arecarefully chosen and appropriate to the level of the students and which arepresented through interesting activities. In this way, not only students’ motivation can be increased but also students can develop love and gain attention to literature. To promote awareness in the field of literature, short children poems, relevant to the language level and interests of the childrencan be used in foreign language classes. In this work, supported with different language activities, the use of poetry will be exemplified for thebeginning level students of foreign language teaching at primary schools, Edebiyat, dil öğretiminin vazgeçilmez öğelerinden birisidir. Kültürün birparçası olan edebiyatın dil öğretiminde yer alması öğrenciye pek çok açıdan katkı sağlamaktadır. Edebi metinleri okuyabilmek, anlayabilmek veonlarla çalışmalar yapabilmek hem dilsel açıdan hem de edebi olgunlukaçısından ileri düzeyde olmayı gerektirdiğinden, başlangıç düzeyinde olanilkokul yabancı dil derslerinde edebiyat kullanımına yer verilmemektedir.İyi seçilmiş, öğrencilerin düzeylerine uygun edebi çalışmalar ilgi çekenetkinliklerle birlikte sunulduğunda dil öğrenen çocuk ve gençlerin de hoşuna gidebilir. Bu yolla dil öğretim yöntemi çeşitlendirilerek hem öğrencigüdülenmesi artırılabilir, hem de öğrencilerde edebiyata karşı ilgi ve sevgiuyandırılabilir. Edebiyat konusunda farkındalık yaratabilmek için öğrencilerin düzeyine ve ilgi alanına uygun kısa çocuk şiirleri kullanılabilir. 166 ÖZET Bloom'un tam öğrenme kuramma dayalı olarak yapılan bu çalışmada izleme testleri, dönût ve düzeltme işlemlerinin İngilizce dersinde öğrenci başarısını artırıcı bir etkisinin olup olmadığı sınanmıştır. Bu amaçla İncesu Anadolu Lisesi 1. sınıflarından 2 grup seçkisiz atama yoluyla deney ve kontrol grubu olarak belirlenmiştir. Her iki gruba da öntest olarak bir düzey belirleme testi uygulanmış ve iki grubun araştırma öncesi denk oldukları görülmüştür. Daha sonra deney grubuna öğretim ünitelerine paralel izleme testleri uygulanmış, öğrencilere dönüt verilmiş ve ardından belirli ölçüte ulaşamamış olanlara düzeltme işlemleri başlatılmıştır. 2,5 ay süren uygulama sonunda deney ve kontrol gruplarına düzey belirleme testi sontest olarak yemden uygulanmış ve iki grup arasında anlamlı bir fark olup olmadığı T testi ile test edilmiştir. istatistiksel analizler sonucunda yapılan uygulamanın yazma ve konuşma gibi üretimsel beceriler dışında kalan dinleme becerisi, okuma becerisi, dilbilgisi, sözcük bilgisi ve tümleşik dil becerilerinde öğrenci başarısını artırdığı görülmüştür. Yazma ve konuşma becerisinde ise deney grubu lehinde bir artış görülmemiştir. Yapılan çalışma yazma ve konuşma becerisi alanında deney grubuna katkı sağlayamamıştır. 167 ABSTRACT In the study based on Bloom's Mastery Learning, it is tested if formative tests, feedback and correction procedures have effects on the increase in students' success in the course of English. With this purpose, 2 groups from the first grade of İncesu Anatolian High School were chosen randomly as experimental and control groups. Both groups were given a summative test as pretest and it was determined that both groups were equal at the beginning. Then the experimental group was applied formative tests which were parallel to the teaching units, the students were given feedback and correction procedures were started for the students who did not reach the expected criteria. At the end of the application lasting 2.5 months, the summative test was given again to the both groups as posttest and it was tested if there is a significant difference between the groups by means of T test. Statistical analyses show that the application (formative tests, feedback and correction) has increased the level of success of the experimental group in skills including listening, reading, grammar, vocabulary and integrated skills. In the productive skills such as writing and speaking, there is no significant difference on behalf of the experimental group. The application did not contribute to students' success in the field of speaking and writing. 203

Bu araştırmanın amacı, Sınavsız Geçiş Projesi 'nin uygulanmasında karşılaşılan güçlükleri tespit ederek Proje 'nin daha başarılı ve amacına uygun biçimde uygulanmasına katkı sağlamaktır. Bu amaçla, Meslek Yüksek Okulları öğretim elemanlarının ve öğrencilerin Proje hakkındaki görüşlerini almak, sınavsız geçiş yapan öğrenciler ile sınavla Meslek Yüksek Okullarına giren öğrencilerin durumlarını bir çok yönden karşılaştırmak ve öğrencilerin okulları ile ilgili görüşlerini tespit edebilmek için iki anket hazırlanmıştır. Çeşitli Meslek Yüksek Okullarından gelişi güzel seçilmiş 102 öğretim elemanına ve 269 öğrenciye bu anketler uygulanmış ve istatistiksel analizlerle sonuçları değerlendirilmiştir. Değerlendirme sonucunda ise, Sınavsız Geçiş uygulamasındaki karşılaşılan sorunlarla ilgili olarak bir yıllık bir hazırlık eğitimi konması, öğrenciler için rehberlik servislerinin açılması ve öğretim elemanları için hizmet içi eğilim programlarının düzenlenmesi gibi bazı önlemlerin alınması gerektiği sonucuna varılmıştır. The purpose of this research is to détermine the obstacles in the implementation of tlie Student Transfer Project, and to contribute to success of the Project. For this purpose, two different questionnaires were developed in order to get the viewpoints of lecturers and students, compare the success of the students who are transferred to higher education and those who have taken the University Entrance Examination, and determine the students' opinions about their college. These questionnaires were administered to 102 of lecturers and 269 students randomly selected from various Vocational Colleges in Turkey, and the results were evaluated via statistical analyses. As a result of the analysis it was inferred that there had to be some strict measures concerning the problems related to Student Transfer Project such as one-year preparatory class implementation, establishing guidance services for students and designing in-service teacher training programmes for the lecturers.

Large local area Ethernet networks are strong candidates to connect data sources and processing nodes in high energy physics experiments. In the high level trigger system of the ATLAS LHC experiment several Gbytes/s of data, distributed over 1700 buffers, have to be delivered to around a thousand processing nodes. Due to the network size, its performance and scalability can only be assessed by modeling. To avoid lengthy simulation runs, and concentrate only on characteristics important for network transfers, the components of the system need to be parameterized. The network performance depends on traffic patterns generated by processing nodes and switching capabilities of the network, we therefore evaluated and modeled both processing nodes and switches. We have developed a parameterized model of a class of switches, where a limited set of parameters, collected from measurements on real devices, is used to model switching characteristics. Another set of simple measurements is used to collect values for parameters used to model processing nodes running the Linux operating system and the TCP/IP communications protocol suite. In this paper we present the set of parameters used in the models together with measuring procedures used to calibrate our models. Calibrated models are used to model small test-bed setups with random traffic to validate our approach.

A parameterized model of the Ethernet, modular, store-and-forward switch has been developed. The procedure to measure the requiredparameters on the real switches is described. The model has been cross-checked with a number of switches from different vendors.The parameterized model has been used to evaluate the performanceof the Ethernet network needed to transfer the ATLAS LVL2 type traffic.

This paper describes tests carried out as part of the ATLAS Trigger/DAQ Pilot Project to investigate and measure the performance of 100 Mbit and Gigabit Ethernet components using raw Ethernet frames. Results are presented for Ethernet interfaces, links and 100 Mbit and Gigabit switches from Alteon [1] and BATM [2]. This work complements previous investigations with the 3com 3300 100 Mbit switch [3], the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Gigabit switch [3] and that done at CERN [4].The aims of the work were to provide understanding of the operation of current networking components make baseline network measurements that can be used as input to modelling that includes simulation of low level firmware/hardware performance the ATLAS Pilot Project testbed the full ATLAS Level2 trigger gain experience in evaluating network components and their interaction with computing systems to be able to specify the performance required for the experiment. The document first describes the equipment used and the test environment and then gives details of the architecture of the switches used. Section 3 outlines the Latency measurements made, presenting equations giving the propagation delay though the network as well as histograms of the latency times. Section 4 discusses the data streaming measurements, presenting information on latency, data throughput and frame loss. Section 5 describes the results obtained when multicast frames were used.

ÖZET Bu çalışma English in Electrical Engineering and Electronics isimli kitaba dayalı olarak `Bilim ve Teknik için İngilizce` öğretiminin önemini vurgulamak amacıyla hazırlanmıştır. Bu ders kitabı Eric H. Glendinning tarafından yazılmıştır ve Elektrik- Elektronik Mühendisliği Bölümü birinci sınıf öğrencileri için Teknik İngilizce derslerinde kullanılmak üzere tavsiye edilebilir. Tezin birinci bölümü problemi ve bu çalışmanın amacım açıklar, ikinci bölüm İngilizce dil öğretiminin tarihsel gelişimiyle başlar ve `özel Amaçlı İngilizce` ve `Bilim ve Teknik için İngilizce` öğretiminde okuma becerisinin yeri metotlar ve yaklaşımlar açısından tartışılır. Bu bölüm `Bilim ve Teknik için İngilizce` öğretiminde okuma parçalarının dil yapısı ve kelime bilgisi yönünden değerlendirilmesiyle son bulur. Üçüncü bölümün amacı `Bilim ve Teknik için İngilizce` öğretiminin ortaya çıkmasına neden olan ihtiyaç analizinin önemini göstermektedir. Bu bölümde Gazi Üniversitesi Mühendislik- Mimarlık Fakültesi Elektrik ve Elektronik Mühendisliği Bölümü birinci sınıf öğrencilerinin ihtiyaç analizi yapılmış ve değerlendirilmiştir. İÜ ABSTRACT This study was carried out to emphasize the importance of reading in teaching EST based on the book English in Electrical Engineering and Electronics. This coursebook was written by Eric H. Glendinning and can be recommended for the freshman students of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department to study in their technical English courses. The first chapter introduces the problem and purpose of the study. The second chapter begins with the historical background of ELT and continues with the description of ESP and EST. After that, the place of reading in EST has been discussed in terms of major methods and approaches. This chapter finishes with the sections related to the texts in EST in terms of language structure and vocabulary. The aim of the third chapter is to show the importance of needs analysis which is the main starting point of EST. In this chapter, the needs analysis of the freshman students in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Gazi University has been made and evaluated related to EST. Then, the role of the EST teacher and the training of the EST teacher are discussed. The fourth chapter attempts to examine all the skills focusing on the reading skill related to teaching EST. The fifth chapter of the study includes the analysis and evaluation of English in Electrical Engineering and Electronics in terms of teaching EST and a sample reading lesson plan. In this chapter the syllabus for EST courses, the EST classroom and motivation have been discussed as well. The last chapter of the study is the conclusion. iv 112

Bu çalışma, 11. ve 12. Sınıf düzeyinde uygulanan İngilizce dil bölümü sınıfları müfredatının (ELOCC), İngilizce öğretmenleri ve bölüm öğrencileri tarafından nasıl algılandığını bulmaya çalışmaktadır. Başlıca araştırma alanları; genel olarak dil sınıfları müfredatı, ders kitapları ve öğretim yöntemleri hakkında; öğrenci ve öğretmenlerin algılarıdır. Çalışmaya Antalya il merkezinde bulunan Anadolu liselerinden, İngilizce dil sınıflarında okuyan 568 öğrenci ve bu sınıflardan sorumlu 31 İngilizce öğretmeni katılmıştır. Araştırma karma yöntemle yürütülmüştür. Elde edilen veriler öğrencilerden bir anket aracılığıyla toplanıp tanımlayıcı istatistikler yoluyla analiz edilirken, İngilizce öğretmenleriyle gerçekleştirilen yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler ve öğrencilerin odak grup görüşmeleri içerik analizi ile yorumlanmıştır. İki görüşmede de araştırma sorularıyla uyumlu olacak şekilde genel dil sınıfı müfredatı, ders kitapları ve öğretmenlerin öğretim yöntemleri hakkında sorular yer almaktadır. Ulaşılacak temel amaç, ilgili konu hakkında detaylı veriler ortaya koymaktır. Bu çalışmanın sonunda, İngilizce dil sınıfları müfredatının nasıl uygulandığına dair bir anlayış ortaya koyulmakla beraber, ne öğretmenlerin ne de öğrencilerin müfredattan memnun olduğu, ders kitapları ve tercih edilen yöntemlerin öğrenci beklentilerini karşılamadığı sonuçlarına varılmıştır. Üniversite giriş sınavının yöntem ve müfredat üzerinde güçlü ve olumsuz etkilerinin olduğu, bu etkinin ders kitaplarının reddedilmesine yol açtığı bağlamına ulaşılmıştır. Veriler dikkate alınarak, bazı önleyici ve çözümcü öneriler yapılmıştır. The present study attempts to find out how the implementation of English language-oriented courses' curriculum (ELOCC) in the 11th and 12th grades is viewed by English teachers and students of the field. The major areas of investigation were the teachers' and students' perceptions of the overall curriculum implementation, coursebooks, and methodology of the teachers. 568 students and 31 English teachers from Anatolian high schools that have English language-oriented classes in Antalya took part in this study. The research was conducted through a mixed method. While the data were collected from students through a questionnaire and analysed through descriptive statistics, English teachers' semi-structured interviews, as well as students' focus-group interviews, were administered and examined by content analysis. Questions of both interviews were in line with research questions: questions about overall English language-oriented classes' curriculum, coursebooks, and methodology of the teachers. The main purpose to be achieved was to reveal in-depth data about this matter. With all the research completed, this study established an understanding of how the English language-oriented courses' curriculum is being applied. At the end of this study, it was concluded that neither teachers nor students were satisfied with overall curriculum implementation, coursebooks, and the methodology preferred. It was pointed out that the university entrance examination has a direct impact on methodology and curriculum, which also results in disfavour of coursebooks. In consideration of the data, some preventative and analytical suggestions were recommended. 155

Bu çalışma, İngilizce öğretmenlerinin yansıtıcı öğretim durumlarını incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaçla; cinsiyet, yaş, mezun olunan bölüm, deneyim yılı, eğitim düzeyi, çalışılan kurum ve tam zamanlı veya yarı zamanlı istihdam durumu gibi değişkenlerin öğretmenlerin yansıtıcılığını etkileyip etkilemediğini sorgulanmıştır. Yansıtıcı uygulama için herhangi bir engel olup olmadığını da araştıran bu çalışmaya Rize'de 38 farklı ilkokul, ortaokul ve lisede çalışan toplam 108 İngilizce öğretmeni katılmıştır. Veriler, yansıtıcı uygulama envanteri ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme soruları ile toplanmıştır. 108 katılımcı envantere katılırken bu katılımcılardan rasgele seçilen 16 İngilizce öğretmeni ile yansıtıcı uygulamaları hakkında derinlemesine bilgi almak amacıyla görüşme yapılmıştır. Envanter SPSS 22.0 ile analiz edilirken görüşmeler için ise içerik analizi kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar, Rize'deki İngilizce öğretmenlerinin sıklıkla yansıtıcı öğretmen olarak davrandıklarını göstermiştir. Bulgulara göre, cinsiyet, yaş, mezun olunan bölüm, tecrübe, eğitim düzeyi, çalıştıkları yer ve istihdam durumu, İngilizce öğretmenlerinin yansıtıcılığını etkilememiştir. Görüşme analizi, Rize'deki İngilizce öğretmenlerinin yansıtıcı uygulama olarak en çok meslektaşları ile bilgi alışverişinde olduklarını, ancak diğer yansıtıcı öğretim tekniklerini çoğunlukla kullanmadıklarını göstermiştir. Çalışma sonunda, yansıtıcı öğretimi engelleyen faktörler beş ana başlıkta toplanmıştır: kişisel nedenler, öğrenci, kurum, yansıtıcı uygulamalar ve MEB uygulamaları. Sonuçlar, en büyük engellerin, uygulamalara ilişkin bilgi eksikliği ve tecrübe nedeniyle uygulamalara ihtiyaç duyulmadığı konusundaki önyargı olduğunu göstermiştir.
