Volcanic and pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCB) injections into the stratosphere perturb the aerosol layer and can have important radiative and chemical impacts on timescales spanning from months to several years. Repeated in situ balloon‐borne measurements of aerosol size and number concentration (>140 nm in diameter), ozone, water vapor, and atmospheric state variables made at midlatitudes in the southern hemisphere (SH) since 2019 enable us to better characterize such events. We use this record and coincident lidar extinction profiles to study several moderate to large stratospheric perturbations in the SH between 2019 and 2022 in detail, including the Australian New Year Super Outbreak (ANYSO) pyroCB in 2020. Median vertical profiles of aerosol number concentration, effective radius, and surface area in SH midlatitudes are also compared with those recorded in Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes under baseline conditions using an identical payload. These data depict the variability in stratospheric aerosol properties in the SH midlatitudes during this period and provide a benchmark for global sectional aerosol models. They reveal that sulfate particle size distributions under baseline conditions and in volcanic plumes are relatively well represented in the Community Earth System Model—Community Aerosol Radiation Model for Atmospheres (CESM‐CARMA), but more observations of biomass burning plumes are needed to improve model skill in simulating pyroCB. Comparisons between in situ and lidar observations also highlight a need for more observations of aerosol composition and refractive index in both fresh and aging biomass burning plumes. Plain Language Summary: Particles in the atmosphere scatter incoming sunlight and can influence surface temperatures. When large wildfire and volcanic plumes occasionally reach the upper atmosphere, they can alter the number and size of particles in this region of the atmosphere for months to years. Here, we describe results from repeated balloon‐based measurements, ground‐based measurements and model simulations of particle number, size, and other optical properties in the Southern Hemisphere between 2019 and 2022 to better understand the impact of such events. We also compare these measurements to similar ones made in the Northern Hemisphere to probe for interhemispheric differences. During the 2020 austral summer, the pristine atmosphere of the southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) basin experienced significant perturbations. This study examines the variability of aerosols and carbon monoxide (CO) over this remote oceanic region and investigates the underlying processes in the upper troposphere–lower stratosphere (UT-LS). Aerosol profiles in January and February 2020 revealed a multi-layer structure in the tropical UT-LS. Numerical models – the FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model (FLEXPART) and the Modèle Isentropique de transport Mésoéchelle de l'Ozone Stratosphérique par Advection (MIMOSA) – indicated that the lower-stratospheric aerosol content was influenced by the intense and persistent stratospheric aerosol layer generated during the 2019–2020 extreme Australian bushfire events. A portion of this layer was transported eastward by prevailing easterly winds, leading to increased aerosol extinction profiles over Réunion on 27 and 28 January. Analysis of advected potential vorticity revealed isentropic transport of air masses containing Australian biomass burning aerosols from extratropical latitudes to Réunion at the 400 K isentropic level on 28 January. Interestingly, we found that biomass burning (BB) activity in eastern Africa, though weak during this season, significantly influenced (contributed up to 90 % of) the vertical distribution of CO and aerosols in the upper troposphere over the SWIO basin. Ground-based observations at Réunion confirmed the simultaneous presence of African and Australian aerosol layers. This study provides the first evidence of African BB emissions impacting the CO and aerosol distribution in the upper troposphere over the SWIO basin during the convective season. The presented study investigates the efficiency of heterogeneous ice formation in natural clouds over Lauder, New Zealand / Aotearoa. Aerosol conditions in the middle troposphere above Lauder are subject to huge contrasts. Clean, pristine air masses from Antarctica and the Southern Ocean arrive under southerly flow conditions, while high aerosol loads can occur when air masses are advected from nearby Australia. This study assesses how these contrasts in aerosol load affect the ice formation efficiency in stratiform midlevel clouds in the heterogeneous freezing range (- 40 to 0 ∘C). For this purpose, an 11-year dataset was analyzed from a dual-wavelength polarization lidar system operated by National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), Taihoro Nukurangi, at Lauder in collaboration with the National Institute for Environmental Studies in Japan and the Meteorological Research Institute of the Japan Meteorological Agency. These data were used to investigate the efficiency of heterogeneous ice formation in clouds over the site as a function of cloud-top temperature as in previous studies at other locations. The Lauder cloud dataset was put into context with lidar studies from contrasting regions such as Germany and southern Chile. The ice formation efficiency found at Lauder is lower than in polluted midlatitudes (i.e., Germany) but higher than, for example, in southern Chile. Both Lauder and southern Chile are subject to generally low free-tropospheric aerosol loads, which suggests that the low ice formation efficiency at these two sites is related to low ice-nucleating-particle (INP) concentrations. However, Lauder sees episodes of continental aerosol, more than southern Chile does, which seems to lead to the moderately increased ice formation efficiency. Trajectory-based tools and aerosol model reanalyses are used to relate this cloud dataset to the aerosol load and the air mass sources. Both analyses point clearly to higher ice formation efficiency for clouds which are more strongly influenced by continental aerosol and to lower ice formation efficiency for clouds which are more influenced by Antarctic/marine aerosol and air masses. The pristine atmosphere of the southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) basin underwent significant perturbations during the 2020 austral summer. This study documents the complex variability of aerosols and carbon monoxide (CO) over this remote oceanic region and identifies the processes governing it in the upper troposphere – lower stratosphere (UT-LS). Aerosol profiles exhibit a multi-layer structure in the tropical UT-LS in January and February 2020. The results show that besides PyroCb -driven injection of biomass burning products to the stratosphere, an alternative pathway may exist during the regular deep-convection season in the tropics. In recent years, the frequency of occurrence of locally heavy rainfall that can cause extensive damages, has been increasing in Japan. For early prediction of heavy rainfall, it is useful to measure the water vapor vertical distribution upwind cumulus convection beforehand. For that purpose, we have been developing compact water vapor differential absorption lidar (DIAL). We show the results of the measurements with lidar in summer when the local heavy rainfall frequently occurs in Japan. We also show the preliminary result of the assimilation of the lidar data to the numerical model and impact on the heavy rainfall prediction.

The backscattering linear depolarization ratios of major types of tropospheric aerosol particles (Asian and Saharan mineral dust, sea salt, and ammonium sulfate) were measured using a laboratory chamber for interpreting the polarization lidar measurement of tropospheric aerosols. The values obtained from Asian and Saharan mineral particles were 0.39 [+ or -] 0.04 to 0.05 (mean [+ or -] standard deviation) for a high number of concentrations in the supermicrometer range and 0.17 [+ or -] 0.03 to 0.14 [+ or -] 0.03 in the submicrometer range. The values were 0.08 [+ or -] 0.01 for sea-salt crystals, 0.04 [+ or -] 0.003 for ammonium sulfate crystals, and 0.01 [+ or -] [less than or equal to] 0.001 for both liquid droplets in the submicrometer range. We have developed a 1.6 [micro]m carbon dioxide (C[O.sub.2]) differential absorption lidar utilizing a quasi-phase-matching optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and a photon-counting detector. The operating wavelengths were chosen based on their low interference from water vapor and low temperature sensitivity. The online wavelength was in the (30012[left arrow]0001) band of C[O.sub.2], which was insensitive to atmospheric temperature. The established OPO laser achieved a 10mJ, 200 Hz repetition rate at the online and offline wavelengths. Our observations confirmed the statistical error of 2% with 5 h of accumulation for the C[O.sub.2] density profile less than 5.2km. Also, the statistical error of l% at an altitude of 2km was demonstrated. The results of the vertical C[O.sub.2] concentrations acquired using a 1.6[micro]m wavelength are presented. A UV ozone differential-absorption lidar (DIAL) utilizing a Nd:YAG laser and a single Raman cell filled with carbon dioxide (C[O.sub.2]) is designed, developed, and evaluated. The generated wavelengths are 276, 287, and 299 nm, comprising the first to third Stokes lines of the stimulated Raman scattering technique. The correction terms originated from the aerosol extinction, the backscatter, and the absorption by other gases are estimated using a model atmosphere. The experimental results demonstrate that the emitted output energies were 13 mJ/pulse at 276 nm and 287 nm and 5 mJ/pulse at 299 nm, with pump energy of 91 mJ/pulse and a C[O.sub.2] pressure of 0.7 MPa. The three Stokes lines account for 44.0% of the available energy. The use of argon or helium as a buffer gas in the Raman cell was also investigated, but this leads to a dramatic decrease in the third Stokes line, which makes this wavelength practically unusable. Our observations confirmed that 30 min of integration were sufficient to observe ozone concentration profiles up to 10 km. Aerosol extinction and backscatter correction are estimated and applied. The aerosol backscatter correction profile using 287 and 299 nm as reference wavelengths is compared with that using 355 nm. The estimated statistical error is less than 5% at 1.5 km and 10% at 2.6 km. Comparisons with the operational carbon-iodine type chemical ozonesondes demonstrate 20% overestimation of the ozone profiles by the DIAL technique. OCIS codes: 010.3640, 010.4950.

Optical and microphysical properties of the upper clouds at an altitude range of 5-11 km were measured over Tsukuba, Japan, on 29-30 March 2004 using a ground-based Raman lidar and a balloon-borne hydrometeor videosonde (HYVIS). The Raman lidar measured the vertical distributions of the particle extinction coefficient, backscattering coefficients, depolarization ratio, and extinction-to-backscatter ratio (lidar ratio) at 532 nm; further, it measured the water vapor mixing ratio. The HYVIS measured the vertical distributions of the particle size, shape, cross-sectional area, and number concentration of the cloud particles by taking microscopic images. The HYVIS measurement showed that the cloud particles were ice crystals whose shapes were columnar, bulletlike, platelike, and irregular, and 7-400 [micro]m in size. The Raman lidar measurement showed that the depolarization ratio ranged from 0% to 35% and the lidar ranged from 0.3 to 30 sr for the clouds in ice-saturated air. The comparison between the measured data and theoretical calculations of the cloud optical properties suggests that the observed variations in the depolarization ratio and lidar ratio were primarily due to the variation in the proportion of the horizontally oriented ice crystals in the clouds. The optical thickness of the cloud obtained from the lidar was about 2 times lower than that calculated from the HYVIS data, and the maximum extinction coefficient was about 5 times lower than the HYVIS data. The most probable reason for the differences is the horizontal inhomogeneities of the cloud properties between the measurements sites for the two instruments.

The vertical distribution of stratospheric aerosols has been measured with lidars at the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI) over Tsukuba since 1982. After two major volcanic eruptions (Mt. El Chichón in 1982 and Mt. Pinatubo in 1991), stratospheric aerosol loading increased about 50–100 times compared with the background level which was observed for 1997-2000. From 2000 to 2012, a slight increase (5.3% year–1) was observed by some volcanic eruptions. This long-term lidar data have been used for assessing of impact of the stratospheric aerosols on climate and the ozone layer.

In this paper, a field-deployable diode-laser-based differential absorption lidar (DIAL) has been developed for lower-tropospheric water vapor observation in Tokyo, Japan. A photoacoustic cell is used for spectroscopy experiment around absorption peaks of 829.022 nm and 829.054 nm. The water vapor density extracted from the observational data agrees with the referenced radiosonde data. Furthermore, we applied modulated pulse technique for DIAL transmitter. It enables DIAL to measure water vapor profile for both low and high altitude regions.

Backscattering properties of ice crystal models (Voronoi aggregates (VA), hexagonal columns (COL), and six-branched bullet rosettes (BR6)) are calculated by using geometrical-opticsintegral-equation (GOIE) method. Characteristics of depolarization ratio (δ) and lidar ratio (L) of the crystal models are examined. δ (L) values are 0.2~0.3 (4~50), 0.3~0.4 (10~25), and 0.5~0.6 (50~100) for COL, BR6, and VA, respectively, at wavelength λ=0.532 μm. It is found that small deformation of COL model could produce significant changes in δ and L.

The tropospheric particle extinction-to-backscatter ratio, the depolarization ratio, and the water-vapor mixing ratio were measured by use of a Raman lidar and a polarization lidar during the Asian dust seasons in 2001 and 2002 in Tsukuba, Japan. The apparent (not corrected for multiple-scattering effects) extinction-to-backscatter ratios (Sp) showed a dependence on the relative humidity with respect to ice ([RH.sub.ice]) obtained from the lidar-derived water-vapor mixing ratio and radiosonde-derived temperature; they were mostly higher than 30 sr in dry air ([RH.sub.ice])< 50%), whereas they were mostly lower than 30 sr in ice-supersaturated air ([RH.sub.ice])[greater than or equal to] 100%), where the apparent extinction coefficients were larger than 0.036 [km.sup.-1]. Both regions showed mean particle depolarization ratios of 20%-22%. Comparisons with theoretical calculations and the previous experiments suggest that the observed dependence of [S.sub.p] on [RH.sub.ice] is attributed to the difference in the predominant particles: nonspherical aerosols (mainly the Asian dust) in dry air and cloud particles in ice-supersaturated air. The column-averaged, dry air mole fractions of CO2 and CH4 (XCO2 and XCH4, respectively) were retrieved from short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectra observed by the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT). Continuous measurements of SWIR spectra have been made via GOSAT since 2009, but there has been insufficient investigation of the effects of cirrus clouds and aerosols on the observations. In this work, we investigated the influences of aerosols and cirrus clouds on the differences between GOSAT observations and Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) data for XCO2 and XCH4 (ΔXCO2 and ΔXCH4) at three sites: Tsukuba and Saga in Japan, and Lauder in New Zealand. We used aerosol optical thickness (AOT), Angstrom exponents (AEs), and single scattering albedo (SSA), all obtained from sky radiometer observations, as well as vertical profiles of aerosols and thin cirrus clouds from lidar observations. Matchups were performed within ±0.1° latitude/longitude rectangular areas of each TCCON site, and within 30 min of the GOSAT overpass time. The results show a negative slope between ΔXCO2 and AOT at 500 nm determined from sky radiometer data at Tsukuba and Saga. The GOSAT XCO2 values tended to be lowered in the presence of cirrus clouds and dense boundary-layer aerosols. Moreover, a significant negative ΔXCO2 was observed at times of large AOTs that resulted from dust-like events. At Lauder, ΔXCO2 was negatively correlated with the AOT at 500 nm, although the AOT at this site was generally small. The mean ± standard deviation for ΔXCO2 and ΔXCH4 at Lauder are −0.80 ± 1.83 (ppm) and −5.27 ± 10.79 (ppb) with correlation coefficients r between GOSAT and TCCON of 0.94 and 0.83, respectively. Both ΔXCO2 and ΔXCH4 were significantly and negatively correlated with the AOT during Sep-Oct-Nov. In addition, stratospheric aerosols caused large negative biases of ΔXCO2 and ΔXCH4 at Lauder despite the small stratospheric aerosol optical depth at that site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
