In this study, we investigate the bulk electronic structure of Pb-substituted LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ single crystals, using two types of hard-x-ray spectroscopy. High-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed a spectral change at low temperatures. Using density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we find that the temperature-induced change originates from a structural phase transition, similar to the pressure-induced transition in LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$. This finding suggests that the mechanism of bulk superconductivity induced by Pb substitution is the same as that under high pressure. Furthermore, a novel low-valence state with a mixture of divalent and trivalent Bi ions is discovered using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with the aid of DFT calculations., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4
$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_{\gamma}^{\rm dir}/d\eta$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta)^\alpha$ with $\alpha{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield., Comment: 673 authors from 82 institutions, 10 pages, 4 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We have measured direct photons for $p_T<5~$GeV/$c$ in minimum bias and 0\%--40\% most central events at midrapidity for Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The $e^{+}e^{-}$ contribution from quasi-real direct virtual photons has been determined as an excess over the known hadronic contributions in the $e^{+}e^{-}$ mass distribution. A clear enhancement of photons over the binary scaled $p$$+$$p$ fit is observed for $p_T<4$ GeV/$c$ in Cu$+$Cu data. The $p_T$ spectra are consistent with the Au$+$Au data covering a similar number of participants. The inverse slopes of the exponential fits to the excess after subtraction of the $p$$+$$p$ baseline are 285$\pm$53(stat)$\pm$57(syst)~MeV/$c$ and 333$\pm$72(stat)$\pm$45(syst)~MeV/$c$ for minimum bias and 0\%--40\% most central events, respectively. The rapidity density, $dN/dy$, of photons demonstrates the same power law as a function of $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$ observed in Au$+$Au at the same collision energy., Comment: 453 authors from 74 institutions, 12 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. v3 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We present scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements on a cleaved surface of the LaO0.9F0.1BiSe2 single crystals. Tunneling spectra show a finite local density of states at EF, which is consistent with metallic conductivity in bulk. In addition, the existence of the supermodulation running along the diagonal directions of Bi square lattice was revealed. The period of the supermodulation was about 3 to 5 times the length of the lattice constant. This period is close to that observed in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2.

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We examined Lead (Pb) Substitution effect on a single crystal of a layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Pb concentration dependence of the lattice constant showed slight anomaly at about 8% and 9% substitution of Pb for Bi. These samples showed the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature and the superconducting volume fraction. Furthermore, these samples showed the anomaly in the temperature dependence of the resistivity at about 150K. These results were not observed in Pb substituted NdO0.7F0.3BiS2. Therefore, the enhancement of the superconducting properties by Pb substitution is related to the structural instability for the pale perturbation in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Solid State Communications

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We succeed in enhancement of a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) for NdO0.7F0.3BiS2 single crystal by partial substitution of Pb for Bi. The Tc increases with increasing Pb concentration until 6%. The maximum Tczero is 5.6 K, which is the highest value among BiS2 based superconductors synthesized under an ambient pressure. Pb substitution for Bi induces lattice shrinkage along the c axis. These results reflect that superconductivity in this system is responsive to the lattice strain., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Measurements of the fractional momentum loss ($S_{\rm loss}\equiv{\delta}p_T/p_T$) of high-transverse-momentum-identified hadrons in heavy ion collisions are presented. Using $\pi^0$ in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 200 GeV measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and and charged hadrons in Pb$+$Pb collisions measured by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, we studied the scaling properties of $S_{\rm loss}$ as a function of a number of variables: the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$, the number of quark participants, $N_{\rm qp}$, the charged-particle density, $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$, and the Bjorken energy density times the equilibration time, $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}\tau_{0}$. We find that the $p_T$ where $S_{\rm loss}$ has its maximum, varies both with centrality and collision energy. Above the maximum, $S_{\rm loss}$ tends to follow a power-law function with all four scaling variables. The data at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and 2.76 TeV, for sufficiently high particle densities, have a common scaling of $S_{\rm loss}$ with $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$ and $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}\tau_{0}$, lending insight on the physics of parton energy loss., Comment: 630 authors, 21 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables. v2 is version accepted by Phys. Rev. C. Plain text data tables for the points plotted in figures for this and previous PHENIX publications are (or will be) publicly available at http://www.phenix.bnl.gov/papers.html

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, $dE_T/d\eta$, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ and 62.4 GeV, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV, $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, and $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, and the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{q{\rm p}}$. For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, $\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}$, and the ratio of $dE_T/d\eta$ to $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems., Comment: 706 authors, 32 pages, 20 figures, 34 tables, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012 data. v2 is version accepted for publication in Phys. Nuclear Experiment ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We present the first measurement of elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) flow in high-multiplicity $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in $^{3}$He$+$Au and in $p$$+$$p$ collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the $^{3}$He$+$Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic $v_2$ and triangular $v_3$ anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The $v_2$ values are comparable to those previously measured in $d$$+$Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparison with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three $^{3}$He nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems., Comment: 630 authors, 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. v2 is the version accepted for publication by Physical Review Letters. Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We report on the Pt doping effect on surface and electronic structure in Ir$_{\mathrm{1-x}}$Pt$_{\mathrm{x}}$Te$_ {\mathrm{2}}$ by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The surface prepared by cleavage at 4.2 K shows a triangular lattice of topmost Te atoms. The compounds that undergo structural transition have supermodulation with a fixed wave vector $q = \frac{2\pi}{5a_m}$ (where $a_m$ is the lattice constant in the monoclinic phase) despite the different Pt concentrations. The superconducting compounds show patch structures. The surface of the compound that exhibits neither the superconductivity nor the structural transition shows no superstructure. In all doped samples, the dopant is observed as a dark spot in STM images. The tunneling spectra near the dopant show the change in the local density of state at approximately -200 mV. Such microscopic effects of the dopant give us the keys for establishing a microscopic model of this material., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We have studied the dependence of azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ for inclusive and identified charged hadrons in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions on collision energy, species, and centrality. The values of $v_2$ as a function of transverse momentum $p_T$ and centrality in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and 62.4 GeV are the same within uncertainties. However, in Cu$+$Cu collisions we observe a decrease in $v_2$ values as the collision energy is reduced from 200 to 62.4 GeV. The decrease is larger in the more peripheral collisions. By examining both Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions we find that $v_2$ depends both on eccentricity and the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$. We observe that $v_2$ divided by eccentricity ($\varepsilon$) monotonically increases with $N_{\rm part}$ and scales as ${N_{\rm part}^{1/3}}$. The Cu$+$Cu data at 62.4 GeV falls below the other scaled $v_{2}$ data. For identified hadrons, $v_2$ divided by the number of constituent quarks $n_q$ is independent of hadron species as a function of transverse kinetic energy $KE_T=m_T-m$ between $0.1

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Two-pion interferometry measurements are used to extract the Gaussian radii $R_{{\rm out}}$, $R_{{\rm side}}$, and $R_{{\rm long}}$, of the pion emission sources produced in Cu$+$Cu and Au$+$Au collisions at several beam collision energies $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ at PHENIX. The extracted radii, which are compared to recent STAR and ALICE data, show characteristic scaling patterns as a function of the initial transverse size $\bar{R}$ of the collision systems and the transverse mass $m_T$ of the emitted pion pairs, consistent with hydrodynamiclike expansion. Specific combinations of the three-dimensional radii that are sensitive to the medium expansion velocity and lifetime, and the pion emission time duration show nonmonotonic $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ dependencies. The nonmonotonic behaviors exhibited by these quantities point to a softening of the equation of state that may coincide with the critical end point in the phase diagram for nuclear matter., Comment: 622 authors, 8 pages, 5 figures, data from 2005, 2007, and 2010. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has performed a systematic study of $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ meson production at midrapidity in $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ mesons are reconstructed via their $K_S^0 \rightarrow \pi^0(\rightarrow \gamma\gamma)\pi^0(\rightarrow\gamma\gamma)$ and $K^{*0} \rightarrow K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ decay modes, respectively. The measured transverse-momentum spectra are used to determine the nuclear modification factor of $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ mesons in $d$$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions at different centralities. In the $d$$+$Au collisions, the nuclear modification factor of $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ mesons is almost constant as a function of transverse momentum and is consistent with unity showing that cold-nuclear-matter effects do not play a significant role in the measured kinematic range. In Cu$+$Cu collisions, within the uncertainties no nuclear modification is registered in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, both mesons show suppression relative to the expectations from the $p$$+$$p$ yield scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions in the Cu$+$Cu system. In the $p_T$ range 2--5 GeV/$c$, the strange mesons ($K_S^0$, $K^{*0}$) similarly to the $\phi$ meson with hidden strangeness, show an intermediate suppression between the more suppressed light quark mesons ($\pi^0$) and the nonsuppressed baryons ($p$, $\bar{p}$). At higher transverse momentum, $p_T>5$ GeV/$c$, production of all particles is similarly suppressed by a factor of $\approx$ 2., Comment: 590 authors, 22 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables. Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We present scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on a cleaved surface of the recently discovered superconductor NdO$_{0.7}$F$_{0.3}$BiS$_{2}$ with a transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) of 5.1 K.Tunneling spectra at 4.2 K (below $T_{\mathrm{c}}$) and 22 K (above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$) show a large spectroscopic gap ($\sim$40 mV), which is inconsistent with the metallic nature demonstrated in bulk measurements. Moreover, we find two interesting real-space electronic features. The first feature is a `checkerboard stripe' electronic state characterized by an alternating arrangement of two types of nanocluster. In one cluster, one-dimensional electronic stripes run along one Bi-Bi direction, whereas, in the other cluster, the stripes run along the other Bi-Bi direction. The second feature is a nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity whose microscopic source seems to be atomic defects on the cleaved surface or dopant F atoms., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We report on the scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments on single crystals of IrTe$_{2}$. A structural supermodulation and a local density-of-states (LDOS) modulation with a wave vector of $q$ = 1/5$\times$$2\pi /a_{0}$ ($a_{0}$ is the lattice constant in the $ab$-plane) have been observed at 4.2K where the sample is in the monoclinic phase. %We cannot find an energy gap emerging reproducibly.% on the region where the supermodulation resides. As synchronized with the supermodulation, the LDOS spatially modulates within two energy ranges (below -200 meV and around -100 meV). We further investigated the effect of the local perturbations including the antiphase boundaries and the twin boundaries on the LDOS. These perturbations also modify the LDOS below -200 meV and around -100 meV, even though the lattice distortions induced by these perturbations appear to be different from those by the supermodulation. Our results indicating several microscopic structural effects on the LDOS seem to offer crucial keys for the establishment of the microscopic model describing the parent state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The PHENIX Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured open heavy flavor production in Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV through the measurement of electrons at midrapidity that originate from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom hadrons. In peripheral Cu$+$Cu collisions an enhanced production of electrons is observed relative to $p$$+$$p$ collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. In the transverse momentum range from 1 to 5 GeV/$c$ the nuclear modification factor is $R_{AA}$$\sim$1.4. As the system size increases to more central Cu$+$Cu collisions, the enhancement gradually disappears and turns into a suppression. For $p_T>3$ GeV/$c$, the suppression reaches $R_{AA}$$\sim$0.8 in the most central collisions. The $p_T$ and centrality dependence of $R_{AA}$ in Cu$+$Cu collisions agree quantitatively with $R_{AA}$ in $d+$Au and Au$+$Au collisions, if compared at similar number of participating nucleons $\langle N_{\rm part} \rangle$., Comment: 380 authors, 13 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We present scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies around an individual excess Fe atom, working as a local perturbation, in the parent material of the iron-chalcogenide superconductor Fe$_{1+\delta}$Te. Spectroscopic imaging reveals a novel isosceles triangular electronic structure around the excess Fe atoms. Its spatial symmetry reects the underlying bicollinear antiferromagnetic spin state and the structural monoclinic symmetry. These findings provide important clues to understand the role of the excess Fe atoms, which complicate the understanding of the phenomena occurring in iron-chalcogenide materials., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The jet fragmentation function is measured with direct photon-hadron correlations in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The p_T of the photon is an excellent approximation to the initial p_T of the jet and the ratio z_T=p_T^h/p_T^\gamma is used as a proxy for the jet fragmentation function. A statistical subtraction is used to extract the direct photon-hadron yields in Au+Au collisions while a photon isolation cut is applied in p+p. I_ AA, the ratio of jet fragment yield in Au+Au to that in p+p, indicates modification of the jet fragmentation function. Suppression, most likely due to energy loss in the medium, is seen at high z_T. The fragment yield at low z_T is enhanced at large angles. Such a trend is expected from redistribution of the lost energy into increased production of low-momentum particles., Comment: 562 authors, 70 insitutions, 8 pages, and 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We have performed Raman measurements on TbMnO3 single crystal under magnetic field along the three crystallographic directions. The flip of the spin spiral plane creates an electromagnon excitation. In addition to the electromagnons induced by the Heisenberg coupling, we have detected the electromagnon created by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction along the c axis. We have identified all the vibrational modes of TbMnO3. Their temperature dependences show that only one phonon observed along the polarization axis is sensitive to the ferroelectric transition. This mode is tied to the Tb3+ ion displacements that contribute to the ferroelectric polarization.

Background: Heavy-flavor production in p+p collisions tests perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations. Modification of heavy-flavor production in heavy-ion collisions relative to binary-collision scaling from p+p results, quantified with the nuclear-modification factor (R_AA), provides information on both cold- and hot-nuclear-matter effects. Purpose: Determine transverse-momentum, pt, spectra and the corresponding R_AA for muons from heavy-flavor mesons decay in p+p and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV and y=1.65. Method: Results are obtained using the semi-leptonic decay of heavy-flavor mesons into negative muons. The PHENIX muon-arm spectrometers measure the p_T spectra of inclusive muon candidates. Backgrounds, primarily due to light hadrons, are determined with a Monte-Carlo calculation using a set of input hadron distributions tuned to match measured-hadron distributions in the same detector and statistically subtracted. Results: The charm-production cross section in p+p collisions at sqrt{s}=200 GeV, integrated over pt and in the rapidity range 1.4

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We have studied the impact of the magnetic field on the electromagnon excitations in TbMnO3 crystal. Applying magnetic field along the c axis, we show that the electromagnons transform into pure antiferromagnetic modes, losing their polar character. Entering in the paraelectric phase, we are able to track the spectral weight transfer from the electromagnons to the magnon excitations and we discuss the magnetic excitations underlying the electromagnons. We also point out the phonons involved in the phase transition process. This reveals that the Mn-O distance plays a key role in understanding the ferroelectricity and the polar character of the electromagnons. Magnetic field measurements along the b axis allow us to detect a new electromagnon resonance in agreement with a Heisenberg model.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured omega meson production via leptonic and hadronic decay channels in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The invariant transverse momentum spectra measured in different decay modes give consistent results. Measurements in the hadronic decay channel in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions show that omega production has a suppression pattern at high transverse momentum, similar to that of pi^0 and eta in central collisions, but no suppression is observed in peripheral collisions. The nuclear modification factors, R_AA, are consistent in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at similar numbers of participant nucleons., Comment: 542 authors, pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev. C. Plain text data tables for the points plotted in figures for this and previous PHENIX publications are (or will be) publicly available at http://www.phenix.bnl.gov/papers.html

Nuclear Experiment ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$ in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These data provide important baseline spectra for comparisons with identified particle spectra in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter $T_{\rm inv}$, mean transverse momentum $
$ and yield per unit rapidity $dN/dy$ at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $\sqrt{s}$ in $p+p$ and $p+\bar{p}$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $m_T$ scaling, $x_T$ scaling on the $p_T$ spectra between different energies. To discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $p+p$ collisions, the measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading-order or next-to-leading-logarithmic perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations., Comment: 431 authors from 62 institutions, 32 pages, 23 figures, and 18 tables. Measurements of double-helicity asymmetries for inclusive hadron production in polarized p+p collisions are sensitive to helicity--dependent parton distribution functions, in particular to the gluon helicity distribution, Delta(g). This study focuses on the extraction of the double-helicity asymmetry in eta production: polarized p+p --> eta + X, the eta cross section, and the eta/pi^0 cross section ratio. The cross section and ratio measurements provide essential input for the extraction of fragmentation functions that are needed to access the helicity-dependent parton distribution functions., Comment: 432 authors from 62 institutions, 13 pages, 5 figures, and 3 tables. Submitted to Physical Review D. v2 has minor changes only to update references and reposition figures and tables. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We report on event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($A_LL$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured at midrapidity $|\eta| < 0.35$ with the requirement of a high-momentum ($>2$ GeV/$c$) photon in each event. Measured event structure is compared with {\sc pythia} and {\sc geant} simulations. The shape of jets and the underlying event were well reproduced at this collision energy. For the measurement of jet $A_{LL}$, photons and charged particles were clustered with a seed-cone algorithm to obtain the cluster $p_T$ sum ($p_T^{\rm reco}$). The effect of detector response and the underlying events on $p_T^{\rm reco}$ was evaluated with the simulation. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the NLO pQCD jet production cross section. For $4 < p_T^{\rm reco} < 12$ GeV/$c$ with an average beam polarization of $< P > = 49%$ we measured $A_{LL} = -0.0014 \pm 0.0037^{\rm stat}$ at the lowest $p_T^{\rm reco}$ bin (4-5 GeV/$c$) and $-0.0181 \pm 0.0282^{\rm stat}$ at the highest $p_T^{\rm reco}$ bin (10-12 GeV/$c$) with a beam polarization scale error of 9.4% and a $\pT$ scale error of 10%. Jets in the measured $p_T^{\rm reco}$ range arise primarily from hard-scattered gluons with momentum fraction $0.02 < x < 0.3$ according to {\sc pythia}. The measured $A_{LL}$ is compared with predictions that assume various $\Delta G(x)$ distributions based on the GRSV parameterization. The present result imposes the limit $-1.1 < \int_{0.02}^{0.3}dx \Delta G(x, \mu^2 = 1 {\rm GeV}^2) < 0.4$ at 95% confidence level or $\int_{0.02}^{0.3}dx \Delta G(x, \mu^2 = 1 {\rm GeV}^2) < 0.5$ at 99% confidence level., Comment: 376 authors from 58 institutions, 18 pages, 22 figures, and 5 tables. Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We measured the temperature dependent infrared reflectivity spectra of TbMnO3 with the electric field of light polarized along each of the three crystallographic axes. We analyzed the effect, on the phonon spectra, of the different phase transitions occurring in this material. We show that the antiferromagnetic transition at TN renormalizes the phonon parameters along the three directions. Our data indicate that the electromagnon, observed along the a direction, has an important contribution to the building of the dielectric constant. Only one phonon, observed along the c-axis, has anomalies at the ferroelectric transition. This phonon is built mostly from Mn vibrations, suggesting that Mn displacements are closely related to the formation of the ferroelectric order., Comment: 7 pages; 6 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of K^0_S , \omega, \eta prime, and \phi mesons in p + p collisions at = 200 GeV. Measurements \omega and \phi production in different decay channels give consistent results. New results for the \phi are in agreement with previously published data and extend the measured pT coverage. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions measured by PHENIX are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, n and T, determining the high-pT and characterizing the low-pT regions of the spectra, respectively. The values of these parameters are very similar for all analyzed meson spectra, but with a lower parameter T extracted for protons. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions., Comment: 431 authors, 28 pages text, 18 figures, 11 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev. D. Plain text data tables for the points plotted in figures for this and previous PHENIX publications are (or will be) publicly available at http://www.phenix.bnl.gov/papers.html

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Transverse momentum (p^e_T) spectra of electrons from semileptonic weak decays of heavy flavor mesons in the range of 0.3 < p^e_T < 9.0 GeV/c have been measured at mid-rapidity (|eta| < 0.35) by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The nuclear modification factor R_AA with respect to p+p collisions indicates substantial energy loss of heavy quarks in the produced medium. In addition, the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v_2 has been measured for 0.3 < p^e_T < 5.0 GeV/c in Au+Au collisions. Comparisons of R_AA and v_2 are made to various model calculations., Comment: 422 authors from 59 institutions, 48 pages, 46 figures, 18 tables. v2 removes line numbers and matches submission to PRC. Plain text data tables for points plotted in figures, but not in tables are at http://www.phenix.bnl.gov/papers.html

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has performed systematic measurements of phi meson production in the K+K- decay channel at midrapidity in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV. Results are presented on the phi invariant yield and the nuclear modification factor R_AA for Au+Au and Cu+Cu, and R_dA for d+Au collisions, studied as a function of transverse momentum (1

Low energy excitations in the multiferroic material TbMnO3 have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Our observations reveal the existence of two peaks at 30 cm-1 and 60 cm-1. They are observed in the cycloidal phase below the Curie temperature but not in the sinusoidal phase, suggesting their magnetoelectric origin. While the peak energies coincide with the frequencies of electromagnons measured previously by transmission spectroscopy, they show surprisingly different selection rules, with the 30 cm-1 excitation enhanced by the electric field of light along the spontaneous polarization. The origins of the modes are discussed under Raman and infrared selection rules considerations.

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy have been performed on superconducting La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.06, 0.12, 0.16$, and 0.21) at 4.2 K. Atomically resolved surface topography has been observed on the $ab$ surface, which exhibits a one-dimensional structure corresponding to the buckling pattern of the orthorhombic phase. The tunneling spectra of all samples exhibit kinks at about $\pm 5$ meV in addition to the energy gap, indicating the existence of two energy scales. While the gap magnitude varies on the length scale of a few nm and steadily increases upon underdoping, the kink energy is spatially uniform on the surface and almost independent of the doping level., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in J. Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
The spatial variation of the local density of states in optimally doped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ (superconducting transition temperature is 34 K) is studied by scanning tunneling spectroscopy at 4.2 K in zero magnetic field. Two-dimensional density-of-states modulation aligned with the Cu-O-Cu bond with a periodicity of about five lattice constants is observed. It is found that this modulation accompanies the appearance of a new energy gap of approximately 10 meV, whose gap edge peak is spatially modulated in intensity. This gap coexists with the superconducting gap, the value of which ranges from 10 meV to 60 meV., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn accepted
