The use of anionic redox represents one possible approach to meeting this ambitious target. However, questions remain regarding the validity of the O.sup.2-/O.sup.- oxygen redox paradigm, and alternative explanations for the origin of the anionic capacity have been proposed.sup.3, because the electronic orbitals associated with redox reactions cannot be measured by standard experiments. Here, using high-energy X-ray Compton measurements together with first-principles modelling, we show how the electronic orbital that lies at the heart of the reversible and stable anionic redox activity can be imaged and visualized, and its character and symmetry determined. We find that differential changes in the Compton profile with lithium-ion concentration are sensitive to the phase of the electronic wave function, and carry signatures of electrostatic and covalent bonding effects.sup.4. Our study not only provides a picture of the workings of a lithium-rich battery at the atomic scale, but also suggests pathways to improving existing battery materials and designing new ones. High-energy X-ray Compton measurements and first-principles modelling reveal how the electronic orbital responsible for the reversible anionic redox activity can be imaged and visualized, and its character and symmetry determined.

Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with an increased long-term risk of developing diabetes. We investigated the risk factors for early postpartum glucose intolerance in patients with GDM.A total of 148 patients with GDM were included in this study. Among them, 30 and 118 were diagnosed with GDM before (B20w group) and after (A20w group) 20 weeks of gestation, respectively. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed in all patients 58 days after delivery. In each group, the association between the postpartum OGTT results and the following parameters were analyzed: age, BMI, family history of diabetes, plasma glucose levels in diagnostic prenatal OGTT, number of abnormal OGTT values, glycated hemoglobin and glycated albumin (GA) levels at diagnosis of GDM, serum C-peptide levels, frequency of insulin therapy, and pregnancy outcomes.Postpartum OGTT revealed glucose intolerance in 9 and 35 patients in the B20w and A20w groups, respectively. In the B20w group, placental weight was an independent predictor for glucose intolerance. In the A20w group, GA level and family history were independent predictors for glucose intolerance.Elevated GA levels may be associated with a higher risk of postpartum glucose intolerance in patients with GDM diagnosed after 20 weeks of gestation.

Abstract

Coupling between the sulphonylurea receptor (SUR) and various potassium channels induces sulphonylurea sensitivity in inwardly-rectifying K-channels. Intrinsic channel activity is absent in the SUR of Xenopus oocyte and unable to induce ATP-sensitivity in endogenous potassium channels of HEK293 cells. The expression of SUR in HEK293 enhances the binding of (3H)glibenclamide. SUR regulates beta cell K-ATP channel activity and induces ATP-sensitivity in beta-cell K-ATP channels through nucleotide-binding.

Abstract

Targeted disruption of the insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) gene locus in mice shows that the targeted genes were retarded in the embryonal stage and the stage after birth and were resistant to glucose-lowering effects of insulin, suggesting the presence of IRS-1-dependent and -independent channels for signal transmission of insulin and IGFs. However, growth retardation in IRS-1 knockout mice is less than that in IGF-1 receptor knockout mice.

Abstract

A mutation of mitochondrial DNA may be associated with both insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM) and non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM). Mitochondrial DNA is the genetic material associated with the energy-producing compartments of cells. Researchers in Japan identified a particular mitochondrial DNA mutation in three of 55 (6%) patients with IDDM and a history of diabetes in first-degree relatives, in two of 100 (2%) patients with NIDDM and a history of diabetes in first-degree relatives, in three of five (60%) patients with diabetes and hearing loss and in eight of 39 (21%) patients with a syndrome consisting of mitochondrial muscle disease, degenerative brain disease, accumulation of lactic acid and stroke-like episodes. The mutation was also found in 62 relatives of the patients studied. The mutation was not found in 85 patients with IDDM who had no family history of diabetes or in 200 healthy persons with no family history of diabetes. The mutation may cause some cases of both IDDM and NIDDM in Japan, and it appears to be inherited from a mother with diabetes.

Abstract

Abstract Background This study was performed to examine whether patients with type 2 diabetes have cognitive deficits associated with the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Methods Twenty-seven middle-aged patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and 27 healthy controls underwent physical measurements and neuropsychological tasks. Response inhibition, reward prediction, and executive function were assessed by the Go/NoGo task, the reversal and extinction tasks, and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). To examine the interactions of being overweight with diabetes on cognitive performance, performance data were analysed by two-way ANCOVA with diabetes and overweight as factors and age as a covariate. Results Patients with type 2 diabetes showed significantly decreased response inhibition in the Go/NoGo task (discriminability index: P = 0.001). There was an interaction of being overweight with diabetes on reaction time in the Go trials of the Go/NoGo task (P = 0.009). Being overweight was related to retained responses to the presentiment of reward in the extinction task (P = 0.029). The four groups showed normal cognitive performance in the WCST. Conclusions Our results showed that middle-aged, newly diagnosed and medication-free patients with type 2 diabetes have a particular neuropsychological deficit in inhibitory control of impulsive response, which is an independent effect of diabetes apart from being overweight.
