Abstract

One of the world's major agricultural crops is rice (Oryza sativa), a staple food for more than half of the global population. In this research, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical images are used to analyze the monthly dynamics of this crop in the lower Utcubamba river basin, Peru. In addition, this study addresses the need to obtain accurate and timely information on the areas under cultivation in order to calculate their agricultural production. To achieve this, SAR sensor and Sentinel-2 optical remote sensing images were integrated using computer technology, and the monthly dynamics of the rice crops were analyzed through mapping and geometric calculation of the surveyed areas. An algorithm was developed on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) virtual platform for the classification of the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 images and a combination of both, the result of which was improved in ArcGIS Pro software version 3.0.1 using a spatial filter to reduce the "salt and pepper" effect. A total of 168 SAR images and 96 optical images were obtained, corrected, and classified using machine learning algorithms, achieving a monthly average accuracy of 96.4% and 0.951 with respect to the overall accuracy (OA) and Kappa Index (KI), respectively, in the year 2019. For the year 2020, the monthly averages were 94.4% for the OA and 0.922 for the KI. Thus, optical and SAR data offer excellent integration to address the information gaps between them, are of great importance to obtaining more robust products, and can be applied to improving agricultural production planning and management. Abstract

The forests of the Peruvian Amazon have undergone important transformations since the middle of the last century. This work evaluated the changes of Land Cover/Land Use (LC/LU) in the province of Rodríguez de Mendoza (Peruvian Amazon), through the methods of supervised classification of maximum probability and interdependent visual interpretation of images of the Landsat satellite, between the 1987–2001 and 2001–2016. Cross-tabulation matrices were constructed and annual change rates were calculated. The results show an accumulated loss of 918,59 km2 of forest cover. The intensity of LC/LU and the deforestation rate were higher in the second period of analysis. It was evidenced that the high concentrations of loss of forest cover are close to the road and water network. The main causes of the loss of forests were the livestock activity and the migratory agricultural expansion to the small farm, favored by the accessibility of the transport infrastructures., Los bosques de la Amazonia peruana han experimentado importantes transformaciones desde mediados del siglo pasado. Este trabajo evaluó los Cambios de Cobertura y Uso del Suelo (CCUS) en la provincia de Rodríguez de Mendoza, mediante los métodos de clasificación supervisada de máxima probabilidad e interpretación visual interdependiente de imágenes del satélite Landsat, entre los períodos 1987–2001 y 2001–2016. Se construyeron matrices de tabulación cruzada y se calcularon tasas e índices anuales de cambio. Los resultados muestran una pérdida acumulada de 918,59 km2 de cobertura boscosa. La intensidad de CCUS y la tasa de deforestación fueron mayores en el segundo período de análisis. Se evidenció que las altas concentraciones de pérdida de cobertura boscosa están próximas a la red vial e hídrica. Las principales causas de la pérdida de bosques fueron la actividad ganadera y la expansión agrícola migratoria a pequeña explotación, favorecidas por la accesibilidad de infraestructuras de transporte.

Abstract

The solar radiation that reaches the earth is the fundamental source of renewable energy in nature, therefore, knowing the local solar radiation is essential for many applications. The objective of this study was to model the behavior of daily solar radiation in the city of Bagua, which allows us to plan and design strategies oriented towards the use of the primary source of renewable energy. For this, the Fernández-Zayas model has been used, which considers the parameters of the monthly average of the maximum global solar radiation and the length of the solar day. The methodology is of the analytical type and consisted of three phases: The first, data collection and filtering of the meteorological station of the Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza National University of Amazonas that is located in the study area; in the second, the model was implemented using the MATLAB / GUI interface, obtaining the simulation of solar radiation; and in the third, the model was validated by error goodness statistics and table t. The estimate of daily solar radiation was calculated and discussed. The results obtained are useful for any application of solar energy in the city of Bagua, Amazonas region, Peru., La radiación solar que llega a la tierra, es la fuente de energía renovable fundamental en la naturaleza, por ende, conocer la radiación solar local es esencial para muchas aplicaciones. El objetivo de este estudio fue modelar el comportamiento de la radiación solar diaria en la ciudad de Bagua, el cual nos permita planificar y diseñar estrategias orientadas hacia el aprovechamiento de la fuente primaria de energía renovable. Para ello, se ha empleado el modelo de Fernández-Zayas, el cual considera los parámetros del promedio mensual de la radiación solar global máxima y la longitud del día solar. La metodología es del tipo analítica y consistió en tres fases:La primera, recolección y depuración de datos de la estación meteorológica de la Universidad Nacional Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza de Amazonas que se encuentra en el área de estudio; en la segunda, se implementó el modelo utilizando la interfaz MATLAB/GUI, obteniendo la simulación de radiación solar; y en la tercera, se validó el modelo mediante los estadísticos de bondad de error y la tabla t. La estimación de la radiación solar diaria se calculó y se discutió. Los resultados obtenidos son útiles para cualquier aplicación de la energía solar en la ciudad de Bagua, región Amazonas, Perú.

Abstract

Los estudios hidrolo´gicos y geomorfolo´gicos se han incrementado en los u´ltimos an~os indicando su importancia para entender el funcionamiento de los sistemas fluviales. En esta investigacio´n se evaluo´ la calidad hidrogeomorfolo´gica del ri´o Utcubamba, ubicado en la cuenca del Amazonas, mediante la aplicacio´n del I´ndice Hidrogeomorfolo´gico (IHG) dividie´ndolo en ocho sectores fluviales. Los resultados mostraron que el ri´o Utcubamba esta´ afectado por notables impactos antropoge´nicos que alteran las condiciones hidrogeomorfolo´gicas, con un creciente deterioro de las mismas desde su nacimiento a su desembocadura. La calidad de las riberas es la ma´s afectada en toda la cuenca, principalmente en el curso bajo debido a las explotaciones agropecuarias de cara´cter extensivo dominantes en este tramo. Por otra parte, el IHG presento´ una adaptabilidad total a las condiciones del a´rea de estudio, en un a´mbito geogra´fico diferente y alejado de la Peni´nsula Ibe´rica. Hydrological and geomorphological studies have increased in recent years indicating their importance to understand the functioning of river systems. In this research, the hydrogeomorphological quality of the Utcubamba River, located in the Amazon basin, was evaluated. By applying the Hydrogeomorphological Index (IHG) along its main watercourse the basin was divided into eight river sections. The results showed that the Utcubamba River is affected by significant anthropogenic impacts which modify the hydrogeomorphological conditions, with an increasing damage of them from its river source to his mouth. The quality of the riverbanks is most affected along the entire basin, mainly in the lower course due to extensive agriculture and livestock farms that are dominant in this part. Moreover, the IHG showed a complete adaptability to the conditions of the study area, in a different geographical area and far from the Iberian Peninsula.

Abstract

Agricultural productivity in the Peruvian region of Amazonas is being jeopardized by conflicts and inadequate land use, that are ultimately contributing to environmental degradation. Therefore, our aim is to assess land suitability for potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) farming in the Jucusbamba and Tincas microwatersheds located in Amazonas, in order to improve land-use planning and enhance the crop productivity of small-scale farmers. The site selection methodology involved a pair-wise comparison matrix (PCM) and a weighted multicriteria analysis using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) on selected biophysical and socioeconomical drivers. Simultaneously, land cover mapping was conducted using field samples, remote sensing (RS), geostatistics and geographic information systems (GIS). The results indicated that for potato crop farming, the most important criteria are climatological (30.14%), edaphological (29.16%), topographical (25.72%) and socioeconomical (14.98%) in nature. The final output map indicated that 8.2% (22.91 km2) was highly suitable, 68.5% (190.37 km2) was moderately suitable, 21.6% (60.11 km2) was marginally suitable and 0.0% was not suitable for potato farming. Built-up areas (archaeological sites, urban and road networks) and bodies of water were discarded from this study (4.64 km2).
