The prevention of falls is paramount in modern healthcare, particularly for the elderly, as falls can lead to severe injuries or even fatalities. Additionally, the growing incidence of falls among the elderly, coupled with the urgent need to prevent suicide attempts resulting from medication overdose, underscores the critical importance of accurate and efficient fall detection methods. In this scenario, a computer-aided fall detection system is inevitable to save elderly people's lives worldwide. Many researchers have been working to develop fall detection systems. However, the existing fall detection systems often struggle with issues such as unsatisfactory performance accuracy, limited robustness, high computational complexity, and sensitivity to environmental factors due to a lack of effective features. In response to these challenges, this paper proposes a novel three-stream spatial-temporal feature-based fall detection system. Our system incorporates joint skeleton-based spatial and temporal Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) features, joint motion-based spatial and temporal GCN features, and residual connections-based features. Each stream employs adaptive graph-based feature aggregation and consecutive separable convolutional neural networks (Sep-TCN), significantly reducing computational complexity and model parameters compared to prior systems. Experimental results across multiple datasets demonstrate the superior effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed system, with accuracies of 99.51\%, 99.15\%, 99.79\% and 99.85 \% achieved on the ImViA, UR-Fall, Fall-UP and FU-Kinect datasets, respectively. The remarkable performance of our system highlights its superiority, efficiency, and generalizability in real-world fall detection scenarios, offering significant advancements in healthcare and societal well-being.

We show that randomness in quadratic Hamiltonians for multimode bosonic systems results in certain information scrambling diagnostics, mirroring those seen in chaotic systems. Specifically, considering initial Gaussian states, we observe the disappearance of the memory effect in entanglement dynamics and the negative value of tripartite mutual information. However, in contrast to chaotic systems, we find that the spectral form factor exhibits a non-linear ramp and the out-of-time-ordered correlators display a power law growth. These results show that information scrambling, associated with randomness, is a distinct feature from quantum chaos. This study explores the potential of Modern Hopfield Networks (MHN) in improving the ability of computer vision models to handle out-of-distribution data. While current computer vision models can generalize to unseen samples from the same distribution, they are susceptible to minor perturbations such as blurring, which limits their effectiveness in real-world applications. We suggest integrating MHN into the baseline models to enhance their robustness. This integration can be implemented during the test time for any model and combined with any adversarial defense method. Our research shows that the proposed integration consistently improves model performance on the MNIST-C dataset, achieving a state-of-the-art increase of 13.84% in average corruption accuracy, a 57.49% decrease in mean Corruption Error (mCE), and a 60.61% decrease in relative mCE compared to the baseline model. Additionally, we investigate the capability of MHN to converge to the original non-corrupted data. Notably, our method does not require test-time adaptation or augmentation with corruptions, underscoring its practical viability for real-world deployment. We provide an economic model of Execution Tickets and use it to study the ability of the Ethereum protocol to capture MEV from block construction. We demonstrate that Execution Tickets extract all MEV when all buyers are homogeneous, risk neutral and face no capital costs. We also show that MEV capture decreases with risk aversion and capital costs. Moreover, when buyers are heterogeneous, MEV capture can be especially low and a single dominant buyer can extract much of the MEV. This adverse effect can be partially mitigated by the presence of a Proposer Builder Separation (PBS) mechanism, which gives ET buyers access to a market of specialized builders, but in practice centralization vectors still persist. With PBS, ETs are concentrated among those with the highest ex-ante MEV extraction ability and lowest cost of capital. We show how it is possible that large investors that are not builders but have substantial advantage in capital cost can come to dominate the ET market., Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure. A systematic investigation of the electrical characteristics of $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) has been conducted under high dose $^{60}$Co gamma radiation up to 5 Mrad (Si). Initial exposure of the diodes to 1 Mrad (Si) resulted in a significant decrease in on-current by $\sim$78% and an increase in on-resistance from $\sim$3 m$\Omega \cdot$cm$^2$ to $\sim$14 m$\Omega \cdot$cm$^2$ compared to the pre-radiation condition, likely due to the generation of radiation-induced deep-level acceptor traps. However, upon exposure to higher doses of gamma radiation (3 and 5 Mrad (Si)) over a prolonged duration, the device performance partially recovered due to a radiation annealing effect. This effect is facilitated by secondary electrons generated through Compton scattering, which dissipate kinetic energy as heat throughout the lattice, thereby annealing the trapping centers responsible for device performance degradation. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) characterization revealed that the net carrier concentration in the $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ drift layer reduced from $\sim$3.19 $\times$ 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-3}$ to $\sim$3.05 $\times$ 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-3}$ after 5 Mrad (Si) irradiation. Temperature-dependent I-V characteristics showed that irradiation leads to a reduction in both forward and reverse current across all investigated temperatures ranging from 25 to 250$^\circ$C, accompanied by slight increases in on-resistance, ideality factors, and Schottky barrier heights. The reverse breakdown characteristics of the $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ SBDs showed a slight increase of the breakdown voltage after radiation. Overall, $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ Schottky diode exhibits high resilience to gamma irradiation, with performance degradation mitigated by radiation-induced self-recovery, highlighting its potential for radiation-hardened electronic applications in extreme environments.

The Bengali language is the 5th most spoken native and 7th most spoken language in the world, and Bengali handwritten character recognition has attracted researchers for decades. However, other languages such as English, Arabic, Turkey, and Chinese character recognition have contributed significantly to developing handwriting recognition systems. Still, little research has been done on Bengali character recognition because of the similarity of the character, curvature and other complexities. However, many researchers have used traditional machine learning and deep learning models to conduct Bengali hand-written recognition. The study employed a convolutional neural network (CNN) with ensemble transfer learning and a multichannel attention network. We generated the feature from the two branches of the CNN, including Inception Net and ResNet and then produced an ensemble feature fusion by concatenating them. After that, we applied the attention module to produce the contextual information from the ensemble features. Finally, we applied a classification module to refine the features and classification. We evaluated the proposed model using the CAMTERdb 3.1.2 data set and achieved 92\% accuracy for the raw dataset and 98.00\% for the preprocessed dataset. We believe that our contribution to the Bengali handwritten character recognition domain will be considered a great development.

People commonly communicate in English, Arabic, and Bengali spoken languages through various mediums. However, deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals primarily use body language and sign language to express their needs and achieve independence. Sign language research is burgeoning to enhance communication with the deaf community. While many researchers have made strides in recognizing sign languages such as French, British, Arabic, Turkish, and American, there has been limited research on Bangla sign language (BdSL) with less-than-satisfactory results. One significant barrier has been the lack of a comprehensive Bangla sign language dataset. In our work, we introduced a new BdSL dataset comprising alphabets totaling 18,000 images, with each image being 224x224 pixels in size. Our dataset encompasses 36 Bengali symbols, of which 30 are consonants and the remaining six are vowels. Despite our dataset contribution, many existing systems continue to grapple with achieving high-performance accuracy for BdSL. To address this, we devised a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, integrating multiple convolutional layers, activation functions, dropout techniques, and LSTM layers. Upon evaluating our hybrid-CNN model with the newly created BdSL dataset, we achieved an accuracy rate of 97.92\%. We are confident that both our BdSL dataset and hybrid CNN model will be recognized as significant milestones in BdSL research.

Cervical cancer is a crucial global health concern for women, and the persistent infection of High-risk HPV mainly triggers this remains a global health challenge, with young women diagnosis rates soaring from 10\% to 40\% over three decades. While Pap smear screening is a prevalent diagnostic method, visual image analysis can be lengthy and often leads to mistakes. Early detection of the disease can contribute significantly to improving patient outcomes. In recent decades, many researchers have employed machine learning techniques that achieved promise in cervical cancer detection processes based on medical images. In recent years, many researchers have employed various deep-learning techniques to achieve high-performance accuracy in detecting cervical cancer but are still facing various challenges. This research proposes an innovative and novel approach to automate cervical cancer image classification using Multi-Head Self-Attention (MHSA) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The proposed method leverages the strengths of both MHSA mechanisms and CNN to effectively capture both local and global features within cervical images in two streams. MHSA facilitates the model's ability to focus on relevant regions of interest, while CNN extracts hierarchical features that contribute to accurate classification. Finally, we combined the two stream features and fed them into the classification module to refine the feature and the classification. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, we used the SIPaKMeD dataset, which classifies cervical cells into five categories. Our model achieved a remarkable accuracy of 98.522\%. This performance has high recognition accuracy of medical image classification and holds promise for its applicability in other medical image recognition tasks.

AI researchers and ethicists have long worried about the threat that automation poses to human dignity, autonomy, and to the sense of personal value that is tied to work. Typically, proposed solutions to this problem focus on ways in which we can reduce the number of job losses which result from automation, ways to retrain those that lose their jobs, or ways to mitigate the social consequences of those job losses. However, even in cases where workers keep their jobs, their agency within them might be severely downgraded. For instance, human employees might work alongside AI but not be allowed to make decisions or not be allowed to make decisions without consulting with or coming to agreement with the AI. This is a kind of epistemic harm (which could be an injustice if it is distributed on the basis of identity prejudice). It diminishes human agency (in constraining people's ability to act independently), and it fails to recognize the workers' epistemic agency as qualified experts. Workers, in this case, aren't given the trust they are entitled to. This means that issues of human dignity remain even in cases where everyone keeps their job. Further, job retention focused solutions, such as designing an algorithm to work alongside the human employee, may only enable these harms. Here, we propose an alternative design solution, adversarial collaboration, which addresses the traditional retention problem of automation, but also addresses the larger underlying problem of epistemic harms and the distribution of trust between AI and humans in the workplace.

GraphQL is a query language and web application programming interface (API) for client-server architecture. Its advantages include type-safe queries, which allow clients to retrieve the data they require precisely in a single request. As organizations adopt GraphQL for API implementations, it is imperative to understand its challenges and the software community's interests. To achieve this goal, we conducted a five-step mixed-method empirical analysis of 45K StackOverflow questions and answers on GraphQL. In the first step, we derive a reference architecture for the GraphQL ecosystem with five key layers. Second, we used topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to automatically identify 14 topics and 47 subtopics. Third, we mapped discussion topics to architecture layers. Fourth, we manually investigate questions on each topic and subtopics to provide additional insight to the GraphQL stakeholders. Finally, we study topic difficulty, popularity, trends, and tradeoffs to provide insights into evolving community interests and challenges. Our results indicate that Client and Server are the top two architectural layers attracting discussion on SO. While earlier discussions on SO focused on building third-party applications consuming GraphQL APIs (i.e., API Integration) released by large organizations, recent trends suggest more organizations implementing APIs using GraphQL servers. Due to difficulty and lack of well-defined solutions, security remains a difficult and low-interest area. However, such a practice can lead to vulnerable APIs.

In the modern context, hand gesture recognition has emerged as a focal point. This is due to its wide range of applications, which include comprehending sign language, factories, hands-free devices, and guiding robots. Many researchers have attempted to develop more effective techniques for recognizing these hand gestures. However, there are challenges like dataset limitations, variations in hand forms, external environments, and inconsistent lighting conditions. To address these challenges, we proposed a novel three-stream hybrid model that combines RGB pixel and skeleton-based features to recognize hand gestures. In the procedure, we preprocessed the dataset, including augmentation, to make rotation, translation, and scaling independent systems. We employed a three-stream hybrid model to extract the multi-feature fusion using the power of the deep learning module. In the first stream, we extracted the initial feature using the pre-trained Imagenet module and then enhanced this feature by using a multi-layer of the GRU and LSTM modules. In the second stream, we extracted the initial feature with the pre-trained ReseNet module and enhanced it with the various combinations of the GRU and LSTM modules. In the third stream, we extracted the hand pose key points using the media pipe and then enhanced them using the stacked LSTM to produce the hierarchical feature. After that, we concatenated the three features to produce the final. Finally, we employed a classification module to produce the probabilistic map to generate predicted output. We mainly produced a powerful feature vector by taking advantage of the pixel-based deep learning feature and pos-estimation-based stacked deep learning feature, including a pre-trained model with a scratched deep learning model for unequalled gesture detection capabilities.

Researchers have been developing Hand Gesture Recognition (HGR) systems to enhance natural, efficient, and authentic human-computer interaction, especially benefiting those who rely solely on hand gestures for communication. Despite significant progress, the automatic and precise identification of hand gestures remains a considerable challenge in computer vision. Recent studies have focused on specific modalities like RGB images, skeleton data, and spatiotemporal interest points. This paper provides a comprehensive review of HGR techniques and data modalities from 2014 to 2024, exploring advancements in sensor technology and computer vision. We highlight accomplishments using various modalities, including RGB, Skeleton, Depth, Audio, EMG, EEG, and Multimodal approaches and identify areas needing further research. We reviewed over 200 articles from prominent databases, focusing on data collection, data settings, and gesture representation. Our review assesses the efficacy of HGR systems through their recognition accuracy and identifies a gap in research on continuous gesture recognition, indicating the need for improved vision-based gesture systems. The field has experienced steady research progress, including advancements in hand-crafted features and deep learning (DL) techniques. Additionally, we report on the promising developments in HGR methods and the area of multimodal approaches. We hope this survey will serve as a potential guideline for diverse data modality-based HGR research.

Given the rise in cyber threats to networked systems, coupled with the proliferation of AI techniques and enhanced processing capabilities, Denial of Service (DoS) attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and easily executable. They target system availability, compromising entire systems without breaking underlying security protocols. Consequently, numerous studies have focused on preventing, detecting, and mitigating DoS attacks. However, state-of-the-art systematization efforts have limitations such as isolated DoS countermeasures, shortcomings of AI-based studies, and a lack of DoS integration features like privacy, anonymity, authentication, and transparency. Additionally, the emergence of quantum computers is a game changer for DoS from attack and defense perspectives, yet it has remained largely unexplored. This study aims to address these gaps by examining (counter)-DoS in the AI era while also considering post-quantum (PQ) security when it applies. We highlight the deficiencies in the current literature and provide insights into synergistic techniques to bridge these gaps. We explore AI mechanisms for DoS intrusion detection, evaluate cybersecurity properties in cutting-edge machine learning models, and analyze weaponized AI in the context of DoS. We also investigate collaborative and distributed counter-DoS frameworks via federated learning and blockchains. Photodetectors based on two-dimensional (2D) atomically thin semiconductors suffer from low light absorption, limiting their potential for practical applications. In this work, we demonstrate a high-performance MoS2 phototransistors by integrating few-layer MoS2 on a PN junction formed in a silicon (Si) substrate. The photovoltage created in the PN junction under light illumination electrically gates the MoS2 channel, creating a strong photoresponse in MoS2. We present an analytical model for the photoresponse of our device and show that it is in good agreement with measured experimental photocurrent in MoS2 and photovoltage in the Si PN junction. This device structure separates light absorption and electrical response functions, which provides us an opportunity to design new types of photodetectors. For example, incorporating ferroelectric materials into the gate structure can produce a negative capacitance that boosts gate voltage, enabling low power, high sensitivity phototransistor; this, combined with separating light absorption and electrical functions, enables advanced high-performance photodetectors., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

We present a full-size engineering model of GALI - The GAmma-ray burst Localizing Instrument, composed of 362 CsI(Tl) small cubic scintillators, distributed within a small volume of $\sim2$l, and read out by silicon photo-multipliers. GALI can provide directional information about GRBs with high angular accuracy from angle-dependent mutual obstruction between its scintillators. Here, we demonstrate GALI's laboratory experiments with an $^{241}$Am source, which achieved directional reconstruction of $<$3$^\circ$ accuracy, in agreement with our Monte-Carlo simulations. GALI has a wide field view of the unobstructed sky. With its current cubic configuration, GALI's effective area varies between 97 cm$^2$ (face on) and 138 cm$^2$ (from the corners at 45$^\circ$), which is verified in the current experiment.

Ultrasound imaging is challenging to interpret due to non-uniform intensities, low contrast, and inherent artifacts, necessitating extensive training for non-specialists. Advanced representation with clear tissue structure separation could greatly assist clinicians in mapping underlying anatomy and distinguishing between tissue layers. Decomposing an image into semantically meaningful segments is mainly achieved using supervised segmentation algorithms. Unsupervised methods are beneficial, as acquiring large labeled datasets is difficult and costly, but despite their advantages, they still need to be explored in ultrasound. This paper proposes a novel unsupervised deep learning strategy tailored to ultrasound to obtain easily interpretable tissue separations. We integrate key concepts from unsupervised deep spectral methods, which combine spectral graph theory with deep learning methods. We utilize self-supervised transformer features for spectral clustering to generate meaningful segments based on ultrasound-specific metrics and shape and positional priors, ensuring semantic consistency across the dataset. We evaluate our unsupervised deep learning strategy on three ultrasound datasets, showcasing qualitative results across anatomical contexts without label requirements. DNA methylation is a crucial epigenetic marker used in various clocks to predict epigenetic age. However, many existing clocks fail to account for crucial information about CpG sites and their interrelationships, such as co-methylation patterns. We present a novel approach to represent methylation data as a graph, using methylation values and relevant information about CpG sites as nodes, and relationships like co-methylation, same gene, and same chromosome as edges. We then use a Graph Neural Network (GNN) to predict age. Thus our model, GraphAge, leverages both structural and positional information for prediction as well as better interpretation. Although we had to train in a constrained compute setting, GraphAge still showed competitive performance with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 3.207 and a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 25.277, slightly outperforming the current state of the art. Perhaps more importantly, we utilized GNN explainer for interpretation purposes and were able to unearth interesting insights (e.g., key CpG sites, pathways, and their relationships through Methylation Regulated Networks in the context of aging), which were not possible to 'decode' without leveraging the unique capability of GraphAge to 'encode' various structural relationships. GraphAge has the potential to consume and utilize all relevant information (if available) about an individual that relates to the complex process of aging. So, in that sense, it is one of its kind and can be seen as the first benchmark for a multimodal model that can incorporate all this information in order to close the gap in our understanding of the true nature of aging.

A pivotal attribute of 5G networks is their capability to cater to diverse application requirements. This is achieved by creating logically isolated virtual networks, or slices, with distinct service level agreements (SLAs) tailored to specific use cases. However, efficiently allocating resources to maintain slice SLA is challenging due to varying traffic and QoS requirements. Traditional peak traffic-based resource allocation leads to over-provisioning, as actual traffic rarely peaks. Additionally, the complex relationship between resource allocation and QoS in end-to-end slices spanning different network segments makes conventional optimization techniques impractical. Existing approaches in this domain use network models or simulations and various optimization methods but struggle with optimality, tractability, and generalizability across different slice types. In this paper, we propose MicroOpt, a novel framework that leverages a differentiable neural network-based slice model with gradient descent for resource optimization and Lagrangian decomposition for QoS constraint satisfaction. We evaluate MicroOpt against two state-of-the-art approaches using an open-source 5G testbed with real-world traffic traces. Our results demonstrate up to 21.9% improvement in resource allocation compared to these approaches across various scenarios, including different QoS thresholds and dynamic slice traffic., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

We present a model to reconstruct partially visible objects. The model takes a mask as an input, which we call weighted mask. The mask is utilized by gated convolutions to assign more weight to the visible pixels of the occluded instance compared to the background, while ignoring the features of the invisible pixels. By drawing more attention from the visible region, our model can predict the invisible patch more effectively than the baseline models, especially in instances with uniform texture. The model is trained on COCOA dataset and two subsets of it in a self-supervised manner. The results demonstrate that our model generates higher quality and more texture-rich outputs compared to baseline models. In the world of deep learning, Transformer models have become very significant, leading to improvements in many areas from understanding language to recognizing images, covering a wide range of applications. Despite their success, the deployment of these models in real-time applications, particularly on edge devices, poses significant challenges due to their quadratic computational intensity and memory demands. To overcome these challenges we introduce a novel Hybrid Dynamic Pruning (HDP), an efficient algorithm-architecture co-design approach that accelerates transformers using head sparsity, block sparsity and approximation opportunities to reduce computations in attention and reduce memory access. With the observation of the huge redundancy in attention scores and attention heads, we propose a novel integer-based row-balanced block pruning to prune unimportant blocks in the attention matrix at run time, also propose integer-based head pruning to detect and prune unimportant heads at an early stage at run time. Also we propose an approximation method that reduces attention computations. To efficiently support these methods with lower latency and power efficiency, we propose a HDP co-processor architecture.

Objective. Evaluate the feasibility of Virtual Reality (VR) wayfinding training with aging adults, and examine the impact of the training on wayfinding performance. Design. Design involved wayfinding tasks in a study with three groups: active VR training, passive video training, and no training, assigned randomly. The training featured 5 tasks in a digital version of a real building. Post-training assessments had 10 tasks in this building, half familiar from training and half new. The study was double-blinded, with each intervention lasting 10 minutes. Participants. A convenience sample of 49 participants; inclusion criteria: age >58, unfamiliar with the building; exclusion criteria: mobility or vision impairments, history of motion sickness, or medical implants. Outcomes. Time spent and Distance traveled on each wayfinding task with a fixed 10-min limit. Results. Participants in VR group reported moderate usability (63.82, SD=14.55) with respect to the training intervention and high Self Location (3.71, SD=0.94). There were no differences in task performance among the groups in the similar tasks. In the new tasks, compared to the control condition, Time spent on tasks was marginally significantly reduced in the VR group; Distance traveled to finish tasks was also reduced in the VR group, and marginally significantly reduced in the Video training group. No differences were found between VR and Video conditions. No adverse effects were reported during or post intervention. Conclusions. This study provides preliminary evidence that VR training can effectively improve wayfinding performance in older adults with no reported adverse effect.

With the advancement of technologies like Industry 4.0, communication networks must meet stringent requirements of applications demanding deterministic and bounded latencies. The problem is further compounded by the need to periodically synchronize network devices to a common time reference to address clock drifts. Existing solutions often simplify the problem by assuming either perfect synchronization or a worst-case error. Additionally, these approaches delay the scheduling process in network devices until the scheduled frame is guaranteed to have arrived in the device queue, inducing additional delays to the stream. A novel approach that completely avoids queuing delays is proposed, enabling it to meet even the strictest deadline requirement. Furthermore, both approaches can be enhanced by incorporating network-derived time-synchronization information. This is not only convenient for meeting deadline requirements but also improves bandwidth efficiency.

Precision optical measurements of the electron-spin precession of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond form the basis of numerous applications. The most sensitivity-demanding applications, such as femtotesla magnetometry, require the ability to measure changes in GHz spin transition frequencies at the sub-millihertz level, corresponding to a fractional resolution of better than 10^{-12}. Here we study the impact of microwave (MW) phase noise on the response of an NV sensor. Fluctuations of the phase of the MW waveform cause undesired rotations of the NV spin state. These fluctuations are imprinted in the optical readout signal and, left unmitigated, are indistinguishable from magnetic field noise. We show that the phase noise of several common commercial MW generators results in an effective pT s^{1/2}-range noise floor that varies with the MW carrier frequency and the detection frequency of the pulse sequence. The data are described by a frequency domain model incorporating the MW phase noise spectrum and the filter-function response of the sensing protocol. For controlled injection of white and random-walk phase noise, the observed NV magnetic noise floor is described by simple analytic expressions that accurately capture the scaling with pulse sequence length and the number of pi pulses. Text segmentation holds paramount importance in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). It plays an important role in several NLP downstream tasks like information retrieval and document summarization. In this work, we propose a new solution, namely TocBERT, for segmenting texts using bidirectional transformers. TocBERT represents a supervised solution trained on the detection of titles and sub-titles from their semantic representations. This task was formulated as a named entity recognition (NER) problem. The solution has been applied on a medical text segmentation use-case where the Bio-ClinicalBERT model is fine-tuned to segment discharge summaries of the MIMIC-III dataset. The performance of TocBERT has been evaluated on a human-labeled ground truth corpus of 250 notes. It achieved an F1-score of 84.6% when evaluated on a linear text segmentation problem and 72.8% on a hierarchical text segmentation problem. This study identifies the potential vulnerabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) to 'jailbreak' attacks, specifically focusing on the Arabic language and its various forms. While most research has concentrated on English-based prompt manipulation, our investigation broadens the scope to investigate the Arabic language. We initially tested the AdvBench benchmark in Standardized Arabic, finding that even with prompt manipulation techniques like prefix injection, it was insufficient to provoke LLMs into generating unsafe content. However, when using Arabic transliteration and chatspeak (or arabizi), we found that unsafe content could be produced on platforms like OpenAI GPT-4 and Anthropic Claude 3 Sonnet. Our findings suggest that using Arabic and its various forms could expose information that might remain hidden, potentially increasing the risk of jailbreak attacks. We hypothesize that this exposure could be due to the model's learned connection to specific words, highlighting the need for more comprehensive safety training across all language forms., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We investigate perturbations of orthonormal bases of $L^2$ via a composition operator $C_h$ induced by a mapping $h$. We provide a comprehensive characterization of the mapping $h$ required for the perturbed sequence to form an orthonormal or Riesz basis. Restricting our analysis to differentiable mappings, we reveal that all Riesz bases of the given form are induced by bi-Lipschitz mappings. In addition, we discuss implications of these results for approximation theory, highlighting the potential of using bijective neural networks to construct complete sequences with favorable approximation properties.

Domain experts from all fields are called upon, working with data scientists, to explore the use of ML techniques to solve their problems. Starting from a domain problem/question, ML-based problem-solving typically involves three steps: (1) formulating the business problem (problem domain) as a data analysis problem (solution domain), (2) sketching a high-level ML-based solution pattern, given the domain requirements and the properties of the available data, and (3) designing and refining the different components of the solution pattern. There has to be a substantial body of ML problem solving knowledge that ML researchers agree on, and that ML practitioners routinely apply to solve the most common problems. Our work deals with capturing this body of knowledge, and embodying it in a ML problem solving workbench to helps domain specialists who are not ML experts to explore the ML solution space. This paper focuses on: 1) the representation of domain problems, ML problems, and the main ML solution artefacts, and 2) a heuristic matching function that helps identify the ML algorithm family that is most appropriate for the domain problem at hand, given the domain (expert) requirements, and the characteristics of the training data. Although repeatability and reproducibility are essential in science, failed attempts to replicate results across diverse fields made some scientists argue for a reproducibility crisis. In response, several high-profile venues within computing established artifact evaluation tracks, a systematic procedure for evaluating and badging research artifacts, with an increasing number of artifacts submitted. This study compiles recent artifact evaluation procedures and guidelines to show how artifact evaluation in distributed systems research lags behind other computing disciplines and/or is less unified and more complex. We further argue that current artifact assessment criteria are uncoordinated and insufficient for the unique challenges of distributed systems research. We examine the current state of the practice for artifacts and their evaluation to provide recommendations to assist artifact authors, reviewers, and track chairs. We summarize the recommendations and best practices as checklists for artifact authors and evaluation committees. Although our recommendations alone will not resolve the repeatability and reproducibility crisis, we want to start a discussion in our community to increase the number of submitted artifacts and their quality over time., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

We report a colloidal synthesis of blue emissive, stable cube-shaped CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) in the strong quantum confinement regime via a dissolution-recrystallization starting from pre-synthesized (KxCs1-x)4PbBr6 nanocrystals which are then reacted with PbBr2. This is markedly different from the known case of Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals that react within seconds with PbBr2 and get transformed into much larger, green emitting CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. Here, instead, the conversion of (KxCs1-x)4PbBr6 nanocrystals to CsPbBr3 QDs occurs in a time span of hours, and tuning of the QDs size is achieved by adjusting the concentration of precursors. The QDs exhibit excitonic features in optical absorption that are tunable in the 420 - 452 nm range, accompanied by blue photoluminescence with quantum yield around 60%. Detailed spectroscopic investigations in both the single and multi-exciton regime reveal the exciton fine structure and the effect of Auger recombination of these CsPbBr3 QDs, confirming theoretical predictions for this system.

Recently, the construction of {\mu^+}{e^-} and {\mu^+}{\mu^+} colliders, {\mu}TRISTAN, at KEK has been proposed. We argue that the construction of a similar {\mu^+} ring tangential to LHC/Tevatron/FCC/SppC will give an opportunity to realize {\mu^+}p and {\mu^+}A collisions at multi-TeV scale center-of-mass energies. In this paper the main parameters of proposed colliders have been studied. It is shown that sufficiently high luminosities can be achieved for all proposals under consideration: L exceeds {10^{33} cm^{-2}s^{-1}} for {\mu^+}p colliders and {10^{30} cm^{-2}s^{-1}} for {\mu^+}A colliders. Estimating the parameters of compact binaries which coalesce and produce gravitational waves is a challenging Bayesian inverse problem. Gravitational-wave parameter estimation lies within the class of multifidelity problems, where a variety of models with differing assumptions, levels of fidelity, and computational cost are available for use in inference. In an effort to accelerate the solution of a Bayesian inverse problem, cheaper surrogates for the best models may be used to reduce the cost of likelihood evaluations when sampling the posterior. Importance sampling can then be used to reweight these samples to represent the true target posterior, incurring a reduction in the effective sample size. In cases when the problem is high dimensional, or when the surrogate model produces a poor approximation of the true posterior, this reduction in effective samples can be dramatic and render multifidelity importance sampling ineffective. We propose a novel method of tempered multifidelity importance sampling in order to remedy this issue. With this method the biasing distribution produced by the low-fidelity model is tempered, allowing for potentially better overlap with the target distribution. There is an optimal temperature which maximizes the efficiency in this setting, and we propose a low-cost strategy for approximating this optimal temperature using samples from the untempered distribution. In this paper, we motivate this method by applying it to Gaussian target and biasing distributions. The integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) in academia has spurred a global discourse on their potential pedagogical benefits and ethical considerations. Positive reactions highlight some potential, such as collaborative creativity, increased access to education, and empowerment of trainers and trainees. However, negative reactions raise concerns about ethical complexities, balancing innovation and academic integrity, unequal access, and misinformation risks. Through a systematic survey and text-mining-based analysis of global and national directives, insights from independent research, and eighty university-level guidelines, this study provides a nuanced understanding of the opportunities and challenges posed by GAI and LLMs in education. It emphasizes the importance of balanced approaches that harness the benefits of these technologies while addressing ethical considerations and ensuring equitable access and educational outcomes. The paper concludes with recommendations for fostering responsible innovation and ethical practices to guide the integration of GAI and LLMs in academia.

High-gain photodetectors based on two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, in particular those in photoconductive mode, have been extensively investigated in the past decade. However, the classical photoconductive theory was derived on two misplaced assumptions. In this work, we established an explicit analytical device model for Schottky contact MoS2 phototransistors that fits well with experimental data. From the fitting results, we found that the Richardson constant of the MoS2 Schottky contact is temperature dependent, indicating that the Schottky contacts for the 2D material is best described by the mixed thermionic emission and diffusion model. Based on this device model, we further established an analytical photoresponse for the few-layer MoS2 phototransistors, from which we found the voltage distribution on the two Schottky contacts and the channel, and extracted the minority carrier recombination lifetimes. The lifetimes are comparable with the values found from transient photoluminescence measurements, which therefore validates our analytical photoresponses for Schottky contact 2D semiconducting phototransistors., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

In this work, we address the issue of quality of experience (QoE) in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided multiuser rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) networks under secrecy constraints. The problem is formulated as maximization of sum mean opinion scores (MOSs) of the users. The problem is decomposed into two subproblems, beamforming and rate allocation and UAV trajectory subproblem. For, beamforming and rate allocation subproblem, we use the epigraph method, property of polynomials, and the norm-bounded error of channels, we linearize the objective function. Then, applying second-order conic (SOC) and first Taylor expansion, we convexify the remaining nonconvex constraints. For the highly nonconvex UAV trajectory, we unroll the constraints and we apply first Taylor expansion on the unrolled constraints. The upcoming phase of space exploration not only includes trips to Mars and beyond, but also holds great promise for human progress. However, the harm caused by cosmic radiation, consisting of Galactic Cosmic Rays and Solar Particle Events, is an important safety concern for astronauts and other living things that will accompany them. Research exploring the biological effects of cosmic radiation includes experiments conducted in space itself and in simulated space environments on Earth. Notably, NASA's Space Radiation Laboratory has taken significant steps forward in simulating cosmic radiation by using particle accelerators and is currently pioneering the progress in this field. Curiously, much of the research emphasis thus far has been on understanding how cosmic radiation impacts living organisms, instead of finding ways to help them resist the radiation. In this paper, we briefly talk about current research on the biological effects of cosmic radiation and propose possible protective measures through biological interventions. In our opinion, biological response pathways responsible for coping with stressors on Earth can provide effective solutions for protection against the stress caused by cosmic radiation. We also recommend evaluating the effectiveness of these pathways through experiments using particle accelerators to simulate the effects of cosmic radiation.

Quantum kernel methods are a proposal for achieving quantum computational advantage in machine learning. They are based on a hybrid classical-quantum computation where a function called the quantum kernel is estimated by a quantum device while the rest of the computation is performed classically. Quantum advantages may be achieved through this method only if the quantum kernel function cannot be estimated efficiently on a classical computer. In this paper, we provide sufficient conditions for the efficient classical estimation of quantum kernel functions for bosonic systems. Specifically, we show that if the negativity in the phase-space quasi-probability distributions of data-encoding quantum states associated with the quantum kernel scales at most polynomially with the size of the quantum circuit, then the kernel function can be estimated efficiently classically. We consider quantum optical examples involving linear-optical networks with and without adaptive non-Gaussian measurements and investigate the effects of loss on the efficiency of the classical simulation. It explores the common ethical challenges posed by both LLMs and other AI systems, such as privacy and fairness, as well as ethical challenges uniquely arising from LLMs. It highlights challenges such as hallucination, verifiable accountability, and decoding censorship complexity, which are unique to LLMs and distinct from those encountered in traditional AI systems. The study underscores the need to tackle these complexities to ensure accountability, reduce biases, and enhance transparency in the influential role that LLMs play in shaping information dissemination. It proposes mitigation strategies and future directions for LLM ethics, advocating for interdisciplinary collaboration. It recommends ethical frameworks tailored to specific domains and dynamic auditing systems adapted to diverse contexts. This roadmap aims to guide responsible development and integration of LLMs, envisioning a future where ethical considerations govern AI advancements in society.

Weeds present a significant challenge in agriculture, causing yield loss and requiring expensive control measures. Automatic weed detection using computer vision and deep learning offers a promising solution. However, conventional deep learning methods often require large amounts of labelled training data, which can be costly and time-consuming to acquire. This paper introduces a novel method for semi-supervised weed detection, comprising two main components. Firstly, a multi-scale feature representation technique is employed to capture distinctive weed features across different scales. Secondly, we propose an adaptive pseudo-label assignment strategy, leveraging a small set of labelled images during training. This strategy dynamically assigns confidence scores to pseudo-labels generated from unlabeled data. Additionally, our approach integrates epoch-corresponding and mixed pseudo-labels to further enhance the learning process. Experimental results on the COCO dataset and five prominent weed datasets -- CottonWeedDet12, CropAndWeed, Palmer amaranth, RadishWheat, and RoboWeedMap -- illustrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in weed detection, even with significantly less labelled data compared to existing techniques. Accurately predicting infrared (IR) spectra in computational chemistry using ab initio methods remains a challenge. Current approaches often rely on an empirical approach or on tedious anharmonic calculations, mainly adapted to semi-rigid molecules. This limitation motivates us to explore alternative methodologies. Previous studies explored machine-learning techniques for potential and dipolar surface generation, followed by IR spectra calculation using classical molecular dynamics. However, these methods are computationally expensive and require molecule-by-molecule processing. Our article introduces a new approach to improve IR spectra prediction accuracy within a significantly reduced computing time. We developed a machine learning (ML) model to directly predict IR spectra from three-dimensional (3D) molecular structures. The spectra predicted by our model significantly outperform those from density functional theory (DFT) calculations, even after scaling. In a test set of 200 molecules, our model achieves a Spectral Information Similarity Metric of 0.92, surpassing the value achieved by DFT scaled frequencies, which is 0.57. Additionally, our model considers anharmonic effects, offering a fast alternative to laborious anharmonic calculations. Moreover, our model can be used to predict various types of spectra (Ultraviolet or Nuclear Magnetic Resonance for example) as a function of molecular structure. All it needs is a database of 3D structures and their associated spectra.

The security of integrated circuits (ICs) can be broken by sophisticated physical attacks relying on failure analysis methods. Optical probing is one of the most prominent examples of such attacks, which can be accomplished in a matter of days, even with limited knowledge of the IC under attack. Unfortunately, few countermeasures are proposed in the literature, and none has been fabricated and tested in practice. These countermeasures usually require changing the standard cell libraries and, thus, are incompatible with digital and programmable platforms, such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). In this work, we shift our attention from preventing the attack to detecting and responding to it. We introduce LaserEscape, the first fully digital and FPGA-compatible countermeasure to detect and mitigate optical probing attacks. LaserEscape incorporates digital delay-based sensors to reliably detect the physical alteration on the fabric caused by laser beam irradiations in real time. Furthermore, as a response to the attack, LaserEscape deploys real-time hiding approaches using randomized hardware reconfigurability. It realizes 1) moving target defense (MTD) to physically move the sensitive circuity under attack out of the probing field of focus to protect secret keys and 2) polymorphism to logically obfuscate the functionality of the targeted circuit to counter function extraction and reverse engineering attempts. We demonstrate the effectiveness and resiliency of our approach by performing optical probing attacks on protected and unprotected designs on a 28-nm FPGA. Our results show that optical probing attacks can be reliably detected and mitigated without interrupting the chip's operation.

As the focus on security of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming paramount, research on crafting and inserting optimal adversarial perturbations has become increasingly critical. In the malware domain, this adversarial sample generation relies heavily on the accuracy and placement of crafted perturbation with the goal of evading a trained classifier. This work focuses on applying explainability techniques to enhance the adversarial evasion attack on a machine-learning-based Windows PE malware detector. The explainable tool identifies the regions of PE malware files that have the most significant impact on the decision-making process of a given malware detector, and therefore, the same regions can be leveraged to inject the adversarial perturbation for maximum efficiency. Profiling all the PE malware file regions based on their impact on the malware detector's decision enables the derivation of an efficient strategy for identifying the optimal location for perturbation injection. The strategy should incorporate the region's significance in influencing the malware detector's decision and the sensitivity of the PE malware file's integrity towards modifying that region. To assess the utility of explainable AI in crafting an adversarial sample of Windows PE malware, we utilize the DeepExplainer module of SHAP for determining the contribution of each region of PE malware to its detection by a CNN-based malware detector, MalConv. Furthermore, we analyzed the significance of SHAP values at a more granular level by subdividing each section of Windows PE into small subsections. We then performed an adversarial evasion attack on the subsections based on the corresponding SHAP values of the byte sequences.

An emerging paradigm in modern electronics is that of CMOS + $\sf X$ requiring the integration of standard CMOS technology with novel materials and technologies denoted by $\sf X$. In this context, a crucial challenge is to develop accurate circuit models for $\sf X$ that are compatible with standard models for CMOS-based circuits and systems. In this perspective we present physics-based, experimentally benchmarked modular circuit models that can be used to evaluate a class of CMOS + $\sf X$ systems, where $\sf X$ denotes magnetic and spintronic materials and phenomena. This class of materials is particularly challenging because they go beyond conventional charge-based phenomena and involve the spin degree of freedom which involves non-trivial quantum effects. Starting from density matrices $-$ the central quantity in quantum transport $-$ using well-defined approximations, it is possible to obtain spin-circuits that generalize ordinary circuit theory to 4-component currents and voltages (1 for charge and 3 for spin). With step-by-step examples that progressively go higher in the computing stack, we illustrate how the spin-circuit approach can be used to start from the physics of magnetism and spintronics to enable accurate system-level evaluations. We believe the core approach can be extended to include other quantum degrees of freedom like valley and pseudospins starting from corresponding density matrices.

Existing anti-malware software and reverse engineering toolkits struggle with stealthy sub-OS rootkits due to limitations of run-time kernel-level monitoring. A malicious kernel-level driver can bypass OS-level anti-virus mechanisms easily. Although static analysis of such malware is possible, obfuscation and packing techniques complicate offline analysis. Moreover, current dynamic analyzers suffer from virtualization performance overhead and create detectable traces that allow modern malware to evade them. To address these issues, we present \textit{The Reversing Machine} (TRM), a new hypervisor-based memory introspection design for reverse engineering, reconstructing memory offsets, and fingerprinting evasive and obfuscated user-level and kernel-level malware. TRM proposes two novel techniques that enable efficient and transparent analysis of evasive malware: hooking a binary using suspended process creation for hypervisor-based memory introspection, and leveraging Mode-Based Execution Control (MBEC) to detect user/kernel mode transitions and memory access patterns. Unlike existing malware detection environments, TRM can extract full memory traces in user and kernel spaces and hook the entire target memory map to reconstruct arrays, structures within the operating system, and possible rootkits. We perform TRM-assisted reverse engineering of kernel-level structures and show that it can speed up manual reverse engineering by 75\% on average. We obfuscate known malware with the latest packing tools and successfully perform similarity detection. Furthermore, we demonstrate a real-world attack by deploying a modified rootkit onto a driver that bypasses state-of-the-art security auditing tools. We show that TRM can detect each threat and that, out of 24 state-of-the-art AV solutions, only TRM can detect the most advanced threats.
