Rapid impacts from both natural and anthropogenic sources on wetland ecosystems underscore the need for updating wetland inventories. Extensive up-to-date field samples are required for calibrating methods (e.g., machine learning) and validating results (e.g., maps). The purpose of this study is to design a dataset generation approach that extracts training data from already existing wetland maps in an unsupervised manner. The proposed method utilizes the LandTrendr algorithm to identify areas least likely to have changed over a seven-year period from 2016 to 2022 in Minnesota, USA. Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 data were used through Google Earth Engine (GEE), and sub-pixel water fraction (SWF) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were considered as wetland indicators. A simple thresholding approach was applied to the magnitude of change maps to identify pixels with the most negligible change. These samples were then employed to train a random forest (RF) classifier in an object-based image analysis framework. The proposed method achieved an overall accuracy of 89% with F1 scores of 91%, 81%, 88%, and 72% for water, emergent, forested, and scrub-shrub wetland classes, respectively. The proposed method offers an accurate and cost-efficient method for updating wetland inventories as well as studying areas impacted by floods on state or even national scales. Forest above-ground biomass (AGB) estimation provides valuable information about the carbon cycle. Thus, the overall goal of this paper is to present an approach to enhance the accuracy of the AGB estimation. The main objectives are to: 1) investigate the performance of remote sensing data sources, including airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR), optical, SAR, and their combination to improve the AGB predictions, 2) examine the capability of tree-based machine learning models, and 3) compare the performance of pixel-based and object-based image analysis (OBIA). To investigate the performance of machine learning models, multiple tree-based algorithms were fitted to predictors derived from airborne LiDAR data, Landsat, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1, and PALSAR2/PALSAR SAR data collected within New York’s Adirondack Park. Combining remote sensing data from multiple sources improved the model accuracy (RMSE: 52.14 Mg ha-1 and R² : 0.49). There was no significant difference among gradient boosting machine (GBM), random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) models. In addition, pixel-based and object-based models were compared using the airborne LiDAR-derived AGB raster as a training/testing sample. A common problem with matching algorithms, in photogrammetry and computer vision, is the imperfection of finding all correct corresponding points, so-called inliers, and, thus, resulting in incorrect or mismatched points, so-called outliers. Many algorithms, including the well-known randomized random sample consensus (RANSAC)-based matching, have been developed focusing on the reduction of outliers. RANSAC-based methods, however, have limitations such as increased false positive rates of outliers, and, consequently resulting in fewer inliers, an unnecessary high number of iterations, and high computational time. Such deficiencies possibly result from the random sampling process, the presence of noise, and incorrect assumptions of the initial values. This paper proposes a modified version of RANSAC-based methods, called Empowered Locally Iterative SAmple Consensus (ELISAC). ELISAC improves RANSAC by utilizing three basic modifications individually or in combination. These three modifications are (a) to increase the stability and number of inliers using two Locally Iterative Least Squares (LILS) loops (Basic LILS and Aggregated-LILS), based on the new inliers in each loop, (b) to improve the convergence rate and consequently reduce the number of iterations using a similarity termination criterion, and (c) to remove any possible outliers at the end of the processing loop and increase the reliability of results using a post-processing procedure. In order to validate our proposed method, a comprehensive experimental analysis has been done on two datasets. The first dataset contains the commonly-used computer vision image pairs on which the state-of-the-art RANSAC-based methods have been evaluated. The second dataset image pairs were captured by a drone over a forested area with various rotations, scales, and baselines (from short to wide). The results show that ELISAC finds more inliers with a faster speed (lower computational time) and lower error (outlier) rates compared to M-estimator SAmple Consensus (MSAC). This makes ELISAC an effective approach for image matching and, consequently, for 3D information extraction of very high and super high-resolution imagery acquired by space-borne, airborne, or UAV sensors. In particular, for applications such as forest 3D modeling and tree height estimations where standard matching algorithms are problematic due to spectral and textural similarity of objects (e.g., trees) on image pairs, ELISAC can significantly outperform the standard matching algorithms. Forest aboveground biomass (AGB) provides valuable information about the carbon cycle, carbon sink monitoring, and understanding of climate change factors. Remote sensing data coupled with machine learning models have been increasingly used for forest AGB estimation over local and regional extents. Landsat series provide a 50-year data archive, which is a valuable source for historical mapping over large areas. As such, this paper proposed a machine learning-based workflow for historical AGB estimation and its change analysis from 2001 to 2019 for the New York State's forests using Landsat historical imagery, airborne LiDAR, and forest plot data. As the object-based image analysis (OBIA) is able to incorporate spectral, contextual, and textural features into the regression model, the proposed method utilizes an OBIA approach and a random forest (RF) regression model implemented on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform. Results demonstrated that there is a considerable decrease of 983.79 × 106 Mg/ha in the AGB of deciduous forests from 2001 to 2006, followed by an increase of 618.28 × 106 Mg/ha from 2006 to 2011, continued with an increase of 229.12 × 106 Mg/ha of deciduous forests from 2011–2016. Finally, the results demonstrated a slight change in AGB from 2016 to 2019. Given the key role wetlands play in climate regulation and shoreline stabilization, identifying their spatial distribution is essential for the management, restoration, and protection of these invaluable ecosystems. The increasing availability of high spatial and temporal resolution optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remote sensing data coupled with advanced machine learning techniques have provided an unprecedented opportunity for mapping complex wetlands' ecosystems. A recent partnership between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) resulted in the design of the NASA‐ISRO SAR (NISAR) mission. In this study, the capability of L‐band simulated NISAR data for wetland mapping in Yucatan Lake, Louisiana, is investigated using two object‐based machine learning approaches: Support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF). L‐band Unmanned Aerial Vehicle SAR (UAVSAR) data are exploited as a proxy for NISAR data. Specifically, we evaluated the synergistic use of different polarimetric features for efficient delineation of wetland types, extracting 84 polarimetric features from more than 10 polarimetric decompositions. High spatial resolution National Agriculture Imagery Program imagery is applied for image segmentation using the mean‐shift algorithm. Overall accuracies of 74.33% and 81.93% obtained by SVM and RF, respectively, demonstrate the great possibility of L‐band prototype NISAR data for wetland mapping and monitoring. In addition, variable importance analysis using the Gini index for RF classifier suggests that H/A/ALPHA, Freeman‐Durden, and Aghababaee features have the highest contribution to the overall accuracy. Plain Language Summary: By illuminating the surface, SAR signals can provide meaningful information on the shape, geometry, and roughness of the surface. In particular, polarimetric decompositions bring a measure of the relative contribution of backscatter from different scattering mechanisms that can be used for wetland delineations, classification, and monitoring. Given the availability of various polarimetric decompositions, the selection of appropriate decomposition based on the application and SAR sensor configuration is crucial. In this study, we investigated the performance of various polarimetric decompositions for delineating wetlands classes over Yucatan Lake in Louisiana. Shrub willow is considered an important dedicated energy crop in temperate climates for the production of bioenergy, biofuels, and bio-based products. A methodology to rapidly and accurately estimate above-ground biomass (AGB) is essential for understanding potential biomass supply, identifying potential growth limitations, and making management decisions. The main objective of this study was to investigate different statistical, machine learning, and deep learning models to estimate shrub willow AGB at a site in Camillus, NY using multi-spectral unmanned aerial system (UAS) imagery. The efficiency of the convolutional neural network (CNN) deep learning algorithm was compared to the well-known methods including linear regression, decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and support vector regression (SVR). The RF model estimated the AGB with the root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.73 Mg/ha and R2 of 0.95, and outperformed other methods. The next most effective method was CNN with the RMSE of 2.69 Mg/ha and R2 of 0.89. Feature importance analysis indicated that normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), ratio vegetation index (RVI), and difference vegetation index (DVI) had the greatest contribution to AGB estimation. Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a cloud-based geospatial processing platform for large-scale environmental monitoring and analysis. The free-to-use GEE platform provides access to (1) petabytes of publicly available remote sensing imagery and other ready-to-use products with an explorer web app; (2) high-speed parallel processing and machine learning algorithms using Google's computational infrastructure; and (3) a library of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) with development environments that support popular coding languages, such as JavaScript and Python. Together these core features enable users to discover, analyze and visualize geospatial big data in powerful ways without needing access to supercomputers or specialized coding expertise. The development of GEE has created much enthusiasm and engagement in the remote sensing and geospatial data science fields. Yet after a decade since GEE was launched, its impact on remote sensing and geospatial science has not been carefully explored. Thus, a systematic review of GEE that can provide readers with the "big picture" of the current status and general trends in GEE is needed. To this end, the decision was taken to perform a meta-analysis investigation of recent peer-reviewed GEE articles focusing on several features, including data, sensor type, study area, spatial resolution, application, strategy, and analytical methods. A total of 349 peer-reviewed articles published in 146 different journals between 2010 and October 2019 were reviewed. Publications and geographical distribution trends showed a broad spectrum of applications in environmental analyses at both regional and global scales. Remote sensing datasets were used in 90% of studies while 10% of the articles utilized ready-to-use products for analyses. Optical satellite imagery with medium spatial resolution, particularly Landsat data with an archive exceeding 40 years, has been used extensively. Linear regression and random forest were the most frequently used algorithms for satellite imagery processing. Among ready-to-use products, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used in 27% of studies for vegetation, crop, land cover mapping and drought monitoring. Detailed information on the spatial distribution of wetlands is crucial for sustainable management and resource assessment. Furthermore, regularly updated wetland inventories are of particular importance given that wetlands comprise a dynamic, rather than permanent, land condition. Accordingly, satellite-derived wetland maps are greatly beneficial, as they capture a synoptic and multi-temporal view of landscapes. Leveraging state-of-the-art remote sensing data and tools, this study produces a high-resolution 10-m wetland inventory map of Canada, covering an approximate area of one billion hectares, using multi-year, multi-source (Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2) Earth Observation (EO) data on the Google Earth Engine™ cloud computing platform. The whole country is mapped using a large volume of reference samples using an object-based random forest classification scheme with an overall accuracy approaching 80% and individual accuracies varying from 74% to 84% in different provinces. This nationwide wetland inventory map illustrates that 19% of Canada's land area is covered by wetlands, most of which are peatlands dominate in the northern ecozones. Importantly, the resulting ever-demanding wetland inventory map of Canada provides unprecedented details on the extent, status, and spatial distribution of wetlands and thus, is useful for many stakeholders, including federal and provincial governments, municipalities, NGOs, and environmental consultants. Despite the application of state-of-the-art fully Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for semantic segmentation of very high-resolution optical imagery, their capacity has not yet been thoroughly examined for the classification of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The presence of speckle noise, the absence of efficient feature expression, and the limited availability of labelled SAR samples have hindered the application of the state-of-the-art CNNs for the classification of SAR imagery. This is of great concern for mapping complex land cover ecosystems, such as wetlands, where backscattering/spectrally similar signatures of land cover units further complicate the matter. Accordingly, we propose a new Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) architecture that can be trained in an end-to-end scheme and is specifically designed for the classification of wetland complexes using polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) imagery. The proposed architecture follows an encoder-decoder paradigm, wherein the input data are fed into a stack of convolutional filters (encoder) to extract high-level abstract features and a stack of transposed convolutional filters (decoder) to gradually up-sample the low resolution output to the spatial resolution of the original input image. The proposed network also benefits from recent advances in CNN designs, namely the addition of inception modules and skip connections with residual units. The former component improves multi-scale inference and enriches contextual information, while the latter contributes to the recovery of more detailed information and simplifies optimization. Moreover, an in-depth investigation of the learned features via opening the black box demonstrates that convolutional filters extract discriminative polarimetric features, thus mitigating the limitation of the feature engineering design in PolSAR image processing. Experimental results from full polarimetric RADARSAT-2 imagery illustrate that the proposed network outperforms the conventional random forest classifier and the state-of-the-art FCNs, such as FCN-32s, FCN-16s, FCN-8s, and SegNet, both visually and numerically for wetland mapping. Abstract Wetlands are home to a great variety of flora and fauna species and provide several unique environmental services. Knowledge of wetland species distribution is critical for sustainable management and resource assessment. In this study, multi-temporal single- and full-polarized RADARSAT-2 and single-polarized TerraSAR-X data were applied to characterize the wetland extent of a test site located in the north east of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The accuracy and information content of wetland maps using remote sensing data depend on several factors, such as the type of data, input features, classification algorithms, and ecological characteristics of wetland classes. Most previous wetland studies examined the efficiency of one or two feature types, including intensity and polarimetry. Fewer investigations have examined the potential of interferometric coherence for wetland mapping. Thus, we evaluated the efficiency of using multiple feature types, including intensity, interferometric coherence, and polarimetric scattering for wetland mapping in multiple classification scenarios. An ensemble classifier, namely Random Forest (RF), and a kernel-based Support Vector Machine (SVM) were also used to determine the effect of the classifier. In all classification scenarios, SVM outperformed RF by 1.5–5%. The classification results demonstrated that the intensity features had a higher accuracy relative to coherence and polarimetric features. However, an inclusion of all feature types improved the classification accuracy for both RF and SVM classifiers. We also optimized the type and number of input features using an integration of RF variable importance and Spearman’s rank-order correlation. The results of this analysis found that, of 81 input features, 22 were the most important uncorrelated features for classification. There are currently various classification algorithms, each with its own advantages and limitations. It is expected that fusing different classifiers in a way that the advantages of each are selected can boost the accuracy in the classification of complex land covers, such as wetlands, compared to using a single classifier. Classification of wetlands using remote-sensing methods is a challenging task because of considerable similarities between wetland classes. This fact is more important when utilizing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, which contain speckle noise. Consequently, discriminating wetland classes using only SAR data is generally not as accurate as using some other satellite data, such as optical imagery. In this study, a new Multiple Classifier System (MCS), which combines five different algorithms, was proposed to improve the classification accuracy of similar land covers. This system was then applied to classify wetlands in a study area in Newfoundland, Canada, using multi-source and multi-temporal SAR data. The results demonstrated that the proposed MCS was more accurate for the classification of wetlands in terms of both overall and class accuracies compared to applying one specific algorithm. Abstract The separability of wetland types using different spectral bands is an important subject, which has not yet been well studied in most countries. This is particularly of interest in Canada because it contains approximately one-fourth of the total global wetlands. In this study, the spectral separability of five wetland classes, namely Bog, Fen, Marsh, Swamp, and Shallow Water, was investigated in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Canada, using field data and multi-source optical Remote Sensing (RS) images. The objective was to select the most useful spectral bands for wetland studies from four commonly used optical satellites: RapidEye, Sentinel 2A, ASTER, and Landsat 8. However, because the ultimate objective was the classification of wetlands in the province, the separability of wetland classes was also evaluated using several other features, including various spectral indices, as well as textural and ratio features to obtain a high level of classification accuracy. For this purpose, two separability measures were used: The T-statistics, calculated from the parametric t -test method, and the U-statistics, derived from the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U-test. The results indicated that the Near Infrared (NIR) band was the best followed by the Red Edge (RE) band for the discrimination of wetland class pairs. The red band was also the third most useful band for separation of wetland classes, especially for the delineation of the Bog class from the other types. Although the Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) and green bands demonstrated poor separability, they were comparatively more informative than the Thermal Infrared (TIR) and blue bands. This study also demonstrated that ratio features and some spectral indices had high potential to differentiate the wetland species. Finally, wetlands in five study areas in NL were classified by inserting the best spectral bands and features into an object-based Random Forest (RF) classifier. Despite recent research into the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique for wetland mapping worldwide, its capability has not yet been thoroughly investigated for Canadian wetland ecosystems. Accordingly, this study statistically analysed interferometric coherence and SAR backscatter variation in a study area located on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, consisting of various wetland classes, including bog, fen, marsh, swamp, and shallow-water. Specifically, multi-temporal L-band ALOS PALSAR-1, C-band RADARSAT-2, and X-band TerraSAR-X data were used to investigate the effect of SAR frequency and polarization, as well as temporal baselines on the coherence degree in the various wetland classes. SAR backscatter and coherence maps were also used as input features into an object-based Random Forest classification scheme to examine the contribution of these features to the overall classification accuracy. Our findings suggested that the temporal baseline was the most influential factor for coherence maintenance in herbaceous wetlands, especially for shorter wavelengths. In general, coherence was the highest in L-band and intermediate/low for both X- and C-band, depending on the wetland classes and temporal baseline. The Wilcoxon rank sum test at the 5% significance level found significant difference ( P-value  < 0.05) between the mean values of HH/HV coherence at the peak of growing season. The test also suggested that L-band intensity and X-band coherence observations were advantageous to discriminate complex wetland classes. Notably, an overall classification accuracy of 74.33% was attained for land cover classification by synergistic use of both SAR backscatter and interferometric coherence. Thus, the results of this study confirmed the potential of incorporating SAR and InSAR features for mapping Canadian wetlands and those elsewhere in the world with similar ecological characteristics. Speckle degrades the radiometric quality of a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image. Previous methods for speckle reduction have used a fixed-size window for filtering the entire image. This, however, may not be effective for the entire image, as land covers of different sizes require different filtering windows. In this paper, a novel method is proposed by which each pixel in the image is filtered with a window appropriate for the size of object within it. The real in-phase and the imaginary quadrature components of the SAR images determine the best window size and the pixels in the intensity image are filtered using their own optimal windows. The proposed method is presented for both single- and multi-polarized SAR images, and the results of several common filters that were modified are presented. This approach is applied to two RADARSAT-2 images: one over San Francisco, California, USA and the other over St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, producing results that were similar to, or outperformed, comparable filters while retaining details and suppressing speckle effectively. The production of spatially detailed quantitative maps of water level variations in flooded vegetation, and the detection of flow patterns and discontinuities in both managed and natural wetland ecosystems provide valuable information for monitoring these unique environments. Hydrological monitoring of wetlands is also critical for maintaining and preserving the habitat of various plant and animal species. Over the last two decades, advances in remote sensing technologies have supported wetland monitoring and management in several aspects, including classification, change detection, and water level monitoring. In particular, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has emerged as a promising tool for hydrological monitoring of wetland water bodies. However, a comprehensive review of the status, trends, techniques, advances, potentials, and limitations of this technique is lacking. In this study, we evaluate the use of InSAR for hydrological monitoring of wetlands, discuss the main challenges associated with this technique, recommend possible solutions to mitigate the main problems identified in the literature, and present opportunities for future research. Au cours des deux dernières décennies, les progrès techniques en télédétection ont contribué à la surveillance et à la gestion des milieux humides à plusieurs égards, dont la classification, la détection des changements et le suivi du niveau d'eau. En particulier, l'interférométrie par radar à synthèse d'ouverture (InSAR) s'est avérée un instrument prometteur pour la surveillance hydrologique des étendues d'eau en milieu humide. Wetlands provide a wide variety of environmental services globally and detailed wetland inventory maps are always necessary to determine the conservation strategies and effectively monitor these productive ecosystems. During the last two decades, satellite remote sensing data have been extensively used for wetland mapping and monitoring worldwide. Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) imagery is a complex and multi-dimensional data, which has high potential to discriminate different land cover types. However, despite significant improvements to both information content in PolSAR imagery and advanced classification approaches, wetland classification using PolSAR data may not provide acceptable classification accuracy. This is because classification accuracy using PolSAR imagery strongly depends on the polarimetric features that are incorporated into the classification scheme. In this paper, a novel feature weighting method for PolSAR imagery is proposed to increase the classification accuracy of complex land cover. Specifically, a new coefficient is determined for each element of the coherency matrix by integration of Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (FLDA) and physical interpretation of the PolSAR data. The proposed methodology was applied to multi-temporal polarimetric C-band RADARSAT-2 data in the Avalon Peninsula, Deer Lake, and Gros Morne pilot sites in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Different combinations of input features, including original PolSAR features, polarimetric decomposition features, and modified coherency matrix were used to evaluate the capacity of the proposed method for improving the classification accuracy using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. The results demonstrated that the modified coherency matrix obtained by the proposed method, Van Zyl, and Freeman-Durden decomposition features were the most important features for wetland classification. The fine spatial resolution maps obtained in this study illustrate the distribution of terrestrial and aquatic habitats for the three wetland pilot sites in Newfoundland using the modified coherency matrix and other polarimetric features. Speckle noise significantly degrades the radiometric quality of PolSAR image and, consequently, decreases the classification accuracy. This article proposes a new speckle reduction method for PolSAR imagery based on an adaptive Gaussian Markov Random Field model. We also introduce a new span image, called pseudo-span, obtained by the diagonal elements of the coherency matrix based on the least square analysis. The proposed de-speckling method was applied to full polarimetric C-band RADARSAT-2 data from the Avalon area, Newfoundland, Canada. The efficiency of the proposed method was evaluated in 2 different levels: de-speckled images and classified maps obtained by the Random Forest classifier. In terms of de-speckling, the proposed method illustrated approximately 19%, 43%, 46%, and 50% improvements in equivalent number of looks values, in comparison with SARBM3D, Enhanced Lee, Frost, and Kuan filter, respectively. Also, improvements of approximately 19%, 9%, 55%, and 32% were obtained in the overall classification accuracy using de-speckled PolSAR image by the proposed method compared with SARBM3D, Enhanced Lee, Frost, and Kuan filter, respectively. This new adaptive de-speckling method illustrates to be an efficient approach in terms of both speckle noise suppression and details/edges preservation, while having a great influence on the overall wetland classification accuracy. Despite the fact that vast portions of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) are covered by wetlands, currently there is no provincial inventory of wetlands in the province. In this study, we analyzed multi-temporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for wetland classification at 4 pilot sites across NL. Object-based image analysis (OBIA) using a segmentation method based on optical data (RapidEye image in this study), and well-adjusted to SAR images, was first compared to pixel-based classification. Next, multi-date object-based wetland maps using the Random Forest classifier were compared to single-date classification. Finally, ratio and textural features were evaluated for wetland classification. The OBIA method demonstrated superior results, and the multi-date classification performed better than single-date classification with accuracies ranging from 75% to 95%. The multi-date results showed that the images acquired in August are the most appropriate for classifying wetlands, while the October images are of less value. Also, covariance matrix is a valuable feature set for wetland mapping. Moreover, ratio and textural features slightly increase the overall accuracy when the initial overall accuracy is relatively low. It can be concluded that multi-date SAR classification, with the proposed segmentation method, shows great potential for mapping wetlands and can be applied throughout the province. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) compact polarimetry (CP) systems are of great interest for large area monitoring because of their ability to acquire data in a wider swath compared to full polarimetry (FP) systems and a significant improvement in information content compared to single or dual polarimetry (DP) sensors. In this study, we compared the potential of DP, FP, and CP SAR data for wetland classification in a case study located in Newfoundland, Canada. The DP and CP data were simulated using full polarimetric RADARSAT-2 data. We compared the classification results for different input features using an object-based random forest classification. The results demonstrated the superiority of FP imagery relative to both DP and CP data. However, CP indicated significant improvements in classification accuracy compared to DP data. An overall classification accuracy of approximately 76% and 84% was achieved with the inclusion of all polarimetric features extracted from CP and FP data, respectively. In summary, although full polarimetric SAR data provide the best classification accuracy, the results demonstrate the potential of RADARSAT Constellation Mission for mapping wetlands in a large landscape. Wetlands are important ecosystems around the world, although they are degraded due both to anthropogenic and natural process. Newfoundland is among the richest Canadian province in terms of different wetland classes. Herbaceous wetlands cover extensive areas of the Avalon Peninsula, which are the habitat of a number of animal and plant species. In this study, a novel hierarchical object-based Random Forest (RF) classification approach is proposed for discriminating between different wetland classes in a sub-region located in the north eastern portion of the Avalon Peninsula. Particularly, multi-polarization and multi-frequency SAR data, including X-band TerraSAR-X single polarized (HH), L-band ALOS-2 dual polarized (HH/HV), and C-band RADARSAT-2 fully polarized images, were applied in different classification levels. First, a SAR backscatter analysis of different land cover types was performed by training data and used in Level-I classification to separate water from non-water classes. This was followed by Level-II classification, wherein the water class was further divided into shallow- and deep-water classes, and the non-water class was partitioned into herbaceous and non-herbaceous classes. In Level-III classification, the herbaceous class was further divided into bog, fen, and marsh classes, while the non-herbaceous class was subsequently partitioned into urban, upland, and swamp classes. In Level-II and -III classifications, different polarimetric decomposition approaches, including Cloude-Pottier, Freeman-Durden, Yamaguchi decompositions, and Kennaugh matrix elements were extracted to aid the RF classifier. The overall accuracy and kappa coefficient were determined in each classification level for evaluating the classification results. The importance of input features was also determined using the variable importance obtained by RF. It was found that the Kennaugh matrix elements, Yamaguchi, and Freeman-Durden decompositions were the most important parameters for wetland classification in this study. While Soil Moisture (SM) can be used as a direct indictor of dryness, the Land Surface Temperature (LST) and vegetation status are indirectly related to SM, and consequently, affect the degree of dryness. Each of these three variables has been individually used to assess the dryness. Furthermore, a combination of the LST and vegetation information has also been applied for dryness estimation through the scatter-plot of the LST and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). However, a combination of these three variables has not been used to estimate the dryness. In this study, a 3 Dimensional (3D) space of the LST, Perpendicular Vegetation Index (PVI), and SM was developed to define a new dryness index named the Temperature-Vegetation-soil Moisture Dryness Index (TVMDI). The TVMDI was evaluated against in situ SM and soil temperature data, as well as the NDVI. The results demonstrated that the TVMDI values were highly correlated with the field soil temperature data and the NDVI (R = 0.78 and R = − 0.87, respectively). However, even though the dryness values estimated from the TVMDI were not highly correlated with the in situ SM data, the correlation was still acceptable (R = − 0.65). Furthermore, a comparison between the proposed index and several satellite-based dryness indices, including the Perpendicular Drought Index (PDI), Modified Perpendicular Drought Index (MPDI), Second Modified Perpendicular Drought Index (MPDI1), and Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI), concluded that the TVMDI was the most accurate index. Moreover, using the TVMDI and multi-temporal Landsat 8 images two dryness maps were produced for the Yanco area to show the effectiveness of the proposed index in depicting the temporal and spatial variation of dryness values for medium spatial resolution images. To show the effectiveness of the TVMDI in large scale applications, two dryness maps from the all of Australia and Iran were also produced using the MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data. Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) is the only province in Atlantic Canada that does not have a wetland inventory system. As a consequence, both classifying and monitoring wetland areas are necessary for wetland conservation and human services in the province. In this study, wetlands in 5 pilot sites, distributed across NL, were classified using multi-source and multi-temporal optical remote sensing images. The procedures involved the application of an object-based method to segment and classify the images. To classify the areas, 5 different machine learning algorithms were examined. The results showed that the Random Forest (RF) algorithm in combination with an object-based approach was the most accurate method to classify wetlands. The average producer and user accuracies of wetland classes considering all pilot sites were 68% and 73%, respectively. The overall classification accuracies, which considered the accuracy of all wetland and non-wetland classes varied from 86% to 96% across all pilot sites confirming the robustness of the methodology despite the biological, ecological, and geographical differences among the study areas. Additionally, we assessed the effects of the tuning parameters on the accuracy of results, as well as the difference between pixel-based and object-based methods for wetland classification in this study. Well sites, including both well pads and exploratory core holes, are small polygonal landscape disturbance features approximately one half to one hectare (0.5–1 ha) in area, resulting from oil and gas exploration activities. Automatic extraction and monitoring of such small features using remote-sensing technology at regional scales has always been desirable for wildlife habitat monitoring and environmental planning and modelling. Due to the vast disturbances of well sites in a province like Alberta, Canada, high-resolution imagery is not practical for well site extraction. For operational purposes, mid-resolution and cost-effective satellite imagery such as Landsat is the choice. However, automatic well site extraction using mid-resolution satellite imagery is a challenging task. Wells are typically less than three pixels in width and length in a Landsat multispectral image. Furthermore, the spectral contrast between the well site pixels and the surrounding areas is low due to vegetation regrowth and the spectral complexity of the surrounding environment. This article presents a novel methodology for automatic extraction of well sites from Landsat-5 TM imagery. The method combines both pixel- and object-based image analyses and contains three major steps: geometric enhancement, segmentation, and well site extraction. The method was applied to Landsat-5 TM images acquired over Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. For accuracy assessment, four regions of interest were selected and the results of the proposed automatic method were evaluated against visual inspection of the Landsat-8 pan-sharpened image. The method results in a total average correctness, completeness, and quality measures of about 80, 96, and 77%, respectively over the four sites. In addition, the method is very fast as an entire Landsat scene is processed in less than 10 minutes. The method is an operational approach for automatic detection of well sites over the entire province and can dramatically reduce the labour cost of manual digitization for monitoring and updating well site maps. Algae serves as a food source for a wide range of aquatic species; however, a high concentration of inorganic nutrients under favorable conditions can result in the development of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Many studies have addressed HAB detection and monitoring; however, no global scale meta-analysis has specifically explored remote sensing-based HAB monitoring. Therefore, this manuscript elucidates and visualizes spatiotemporal trends in HAB detection and monitoring using remote sensing methods and discusses future insights through a meta-analysis of 420 journal articles. The results indicate an increase in the quantity of published articles which have facilitated the analysis of sensors, software, and HAB proxy estimation methods. The comparison across multiple studies highlighted the need for a standardized reporting method for HAB proxy estimation. Research gaps include: (1) atmospheric correction methods, particularly for turbid waters, (2) the use of analytical-based models, (3) the application of machine learning algorithms, (4) the generation of harmonized virtual constellation and data fusion for increased spatial and temporal resolutions, and (5) the use of cloud-computing platforms for large scale HAB detection and monitoring. The planned hyperspectral satellites will aid in filling these gaps to some extent. Land cover classification of very high resolution (VHR) imagery over urban areas is an extremely challenging task. Impervious land covers such as buildings, roads, and parking lots are spectrally too similar to be separated using only the spectral information of VHR imagery. Additional information, therefore, is required for separating such land covers by the classifier. One source of additional information is the vector data, which are available in archives for many urban areas. Further, the object-based approach provides a more effective way to incorporate vector data into the classification process as the misregistration between different layers is less problematic in object-based compared to pixel-based image analysis. In this research, a hierarchical rule-based object-based classification framework was developed based on a small subset of QuickBird (QB) imagery coupled with a layer of height points called Spot Height (SH) to classify a complex urban environment. In the rule-set, different spectral, morphological, contextual, class-related, and thematic layer features were employed. To assess the general applicability of the rule-set, the same classification framework and a similar one using slightly different thresholds applied to larger subsets of QB and IKONOS (IK), respectively. Results show an overall accuracy of 92% and 86% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.88 and 0.80 for the QB and IK Test image, respectively. Immediately after an earthquake, rapid disaster management is the main challenge for relevant organizations. While satellite images have been used in the past two decades for building-damage mapping, they have rarely been utilized for the timely damage monitoring required for rescue operations. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently become very popular due to their agile deployment to sites, super-high spatial resolution, and relatively low operating cost. This paper proposes a novel deep-learning-based method for rapid post-earthquake building damage detection. The method detects damages in four levels and consists of three steps. First, three different feature types—non-deep, deep, and their fusion—are investigated to determine the optimal feature extraction method. A "one-epoch convolutional autoencoder (OECAE)" is used to extract deep features from non-deep features. Then, a rule-based procedure is designed for the automatic selection of the proper training samples required by the classification algorithms in the next step. Finally, seven famous machine learning (ML) algorithms—including support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), gradient boosting (GB), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), decision trees (DT), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), and adaBoost (AB)—and a basic deep learning algorithm (i.e., multi-layer perceptron (MLP)) are implemented to obtain building damage maps. The results indicated that auto-training samples are feasible and superior to manual ones, with improved overall accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient (KC) over 22% and 33%, respectively; SVM (OA = 82% and KC = 74.01%) was the most accurate AI model with a slight advantage over MLP (OA = 82% and KC = 73.98%). Additionally, it was found that the fusion of deep and non-deep features using OECAE could significantly enhance damage-mapping efficiency compared to those using either non-deep features (by an average improvement of 6.75% and 9.78% in OA and KC, respectively) or deep features (improving OA by 7.19% and KC by 10.18% on average) alone. Despite providing vital ecosystem services, wetlands are increasingly threatened across the globe by both anthropogenic activities and natural processes. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has emerged as a promising tool for rapid and accurate monitoring of wetland extent and type. By acquiring information on the roughness and moisture content of the surface, SAR offers unique potential for wetland monitoring. However, there are still challenges in applying SAR for mapping complex wetland environments. The backscattering similarity of different wetland classes is one of the challenges. Choosing the appropriate SAR specifications (incidence angle, frequency and polarization), based on the wetland type, is also a subject of debate and should be investigated more thoroughly. The geometric distortion of SAR imagery and loss of coherency are other remaining challenges in applying SAR and its processing techniques for wetland studies. Hence, this study provides a systematic meta-analysis based on compilation and analysis of indexed research studies that used SAR for wetland monitoring. This meta-analysis reviewed 172 papers and documented an upward trend in usage of SAR data, increasing usage of multi-sensor data, increasing integration of C- and L- bands over other configurations and higher classification accuracy with multi-frequency and multi-polarized SAR data. The highest number of wetland research studies using SAR data came from the USA, Canada and China. • A classification scheme was proposed for delineating spectrally similar classes. • The dynamic classification scheme was applied to wetlands. • The proposed method was compared to the classic method in five areas in Canada. • The proposed method improved the average accuracy of wetlands by up to 25%. Applying numerous features is common for complex land cover classification, which makes feature selection necessary. Although the selected feature subsets may yield high overall accuracies in the case of spectrally similar classes such as wetlands, several individual accuracies are often low. A reason is that one set of features used to separate one specific class from the rest might not be appropriate for delineating another class. An additional reason is that while the overall accuracy is applied to evaluate the potential of a feature subset, it may be influenced by a few high-accuracy classes that are spectrally distinct and for which collecting enough training data is feasible. In this article, rather than simultaneously mapping all classes, they were individually classified using a different feature selection. Spectral analysis was applied to determine both the order of the classes to be mapped and a merging scheme that was applied to the remaining classes to increase the accuracy of the target class. The proposed approach was applied to wetland mapping using five pilot sites throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The dataset available for each pilot site differed in quality and quantity. However, the proposed method accurately classified wetlands in all pilot sites, even those with limited satellite and/or field data, and outperformed the classic method by increasing the average producer and user accuracies of wetlands by up to 22% and 25%, respectively, and yielding overall accuracies up to 93%. Among wetland classes, Shallow Water was easier to be distinguished, as a result of being spectrally less similar to the rest of the wetland classes. Change detection using Remote Sensing (RS) techniques is valuable in numerous applications, including environmental management and hazard monitoring. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images have proven to be even more effective in this regard because of their all-weather, day and night acquisition capabilities. In this study, a polarimetric index based on the ratio of span (total power) values was introduced, in which neighbourhood information was considered. The role of the central pixel and its neighbourhood was adjusted using a weight parameter. The proposed index was applied to detect flooded areas in Dongting Lake, Hunan, China, and was then compared with the Wishart Maximum Likelihood Ratio (MLR) test. Results demonstrated that although the proposed index and the Wishart MLR test yielded similar accuracies (accuracy of 94% and 93%, and Kappa Coefficients of 0.82 and 0.86, respectively), inclusion of neighbourhood information in the proposed index not only increased the connectedness and decreased the noise associated with the objects within the produced map, but also increased the consistency and confidence of the results. Detailed information on spatial distribution of wetland classes is crucial for monitoring this important productive ecosystem using advanced remote sensing tools and data. Although the potential of full- and dual-polarimetric (FP and DP) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for wetland classification has been well examined, the capability of compact polarimetric (CP) SAR data has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This is of great significance, since the upcoming RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM), which will soon be the main source of SAR observations in Canada, will have CP mode as one of its main SAR configurations. This also highlights the necessity to fully exploit such important Earth Observation (EO) data by examining the similarities and dissimilarities between FP and CP SAR data for wetland mapping. Accordingly, this study examines and compares the discrimination capability of extracted features from FP and simulated CP SAR data between pairs of wetland classes. In particular, 13 FP and 22 simulated CP SAR features are extracted from RADARSAT-2 data to determine their discrimination capabilities both qualitatively and quantitatively in three wetland sites, located in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Seven of 13 FP and 15 of 22 CP SAR features are found to be the most discriminant, as they indicate an excellent separability for at least one pair of wetland classes. The overall accuracies of 87.89%, 80.67%, and 84.07% are achieved using the CP SAR data for the three wetland sites (Avalon, Deer Lake, and Gros Morne, respectively) in this study. Although these accuracies are lower than those of FP SAR data, they confirm the potential of CP SAR data for wetland mapping as accuracies exceed 80% in all three sites. The CP SAR data collected by RCM will significantly contribute to the efforts ongoing of conservation strategies for wetlands and monitoring changes, especially on large scales, as they have both wider swath coverage and improved temporal resolution compared to those of RADARSAT-2. Despite recent advances of deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in various computer vision tasks, their potential for classification of multispectral remote sensing images has not been thoroughly explored. In particular, the applications of deep CNNs using optical remote sensing data have focused on the classification of very high-resolution aerial and satellite data, owing to the similarity of these data to the large datasets in computer vision. Accordingly, this study presents a detailed investigation of state-of-the-art deep learning tools for classification of complex wetland classes using multispectral RapidEye optical imagery. Specifically, we examine the capacity of seven well-known deep convnets, namely DenseNet121, InceptionV3, VGG16, VGG19, Xception, ResNet50, and InceptionResNetV2, for wetland mapping in Canada. In addition, the classification results obtained from deep CNNs are compared with those based on conventional machine learning tools, including Random Forest and Support Vector Machine, to further evaluate the efficiency of the former to classify wetlands. The results illustrate that the full-training of convnets using five spectral bands outperforms the other strategies for all convnets. InceptionResNetV2, ResNet50, and Xception are distinguished as the top three convnets, providing state-of-the-art classification accuracies of 96.17%, 94.81%, and 93.57%, respectively. The classification accuracies obtained using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) are 74.89% and 76.08%, respectively, considerably inferior relative to CNNs. Importantly, InceptionResNetV2 is consistently found to be superior compared to all other convnets, suggesting the integration of Inception and ResNet modules is an efficient architecture for classifying complex remote sensing scenes such as wetlands. The procedure of selecting an optimum number and best distribution of ground control information is important in order to reach accurate and robust registration results. This paper proposes a new general procedure based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) which is applicable for all kinds of features (point, line, and areal features). However, linear features due to their unique characteristics are of interest in this investigation. This method is called Optimum number of Well-Distributed ground control Information Selection (OWDIS) procedure. Using this method, a population of binary chromosomes is randomly initialized. The ones indicate the presence of a pair of conjugate lines as a GCL and zeros specify the absence. The chromosome length is considered equal to the number of all conjugate lines. For each chromosome, the unknown parameters of a proper mathematical model can be calculated using the selected GCLs (ones in each chromosome). Then, a limited number of Check Points (CPs) are used to evaluate the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of each chromosome as its fitness value. The procedure continues until reaching a stopping criterion. The number and position of ones in the best chromosome indicate the selected GCLs among all conjugate lines. To evaluate the proposed method, a GeoEye and an Ikonos Images are used over different areas of Iran. Comparing the obtained results by the proposed method in a traditional RFM with conventional methods that use all conjugate lines as GCLs shows five times the accuracy improvement (pixel level accuracy) as well as the strength of the proposed method. To prevent an over-parametrization error in a traditional RFM due to the selection of a high number of improper correlated terms, an optimized line-based RFM is also proposed. The results show the superiority of the combination of the proposed OWDIS method with an optimized line-based RFM in terms of increasing the accuracy to better than 0.7 pixel, reliability, and reducing systematic errors. Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images contain useful information, which can lead to extensive land cover interpretation and a variety of output products. In contrast to optical imagery, there are several challenges in extracting beneficial features from PolSAR data. Deep learning (DL) methods can provide solutions to address PolSAR feature extraction challenges. The convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and graph convolutional networks (GCNs) can drive PolSAR image characteristics by deploying kernel abilities in considering neighborhood (local) information and graphs in considering long-range similarities. A novel dual-branch fusion of CNN and mini-GCN is proposed in this study for PolSAR image classification. To fully utilize the PolSAR image capacity, different spatial-based and polarimetric-based features are incorporated into CNN and mini-GCN branches of the proposed model. The performance of the proposed method is verified by comparing the classification results to multiple state-of-the-art approaches on the airborne synthetic aperture radar (AIRSAR) dataset of Flevoland and San Francisco. The proposed approach showed 1.3% and 2.7% improvements in overall accuracy compared to conventional methods with these AIRSAR datasets. Meanwhile, it enhanced its one-branch version by 0.73% and 1.82%. Analyses over Flevoland data further indicated the effectiveness of the dual-branch model using varied training sampling ratios, leading to a promising overall accuracy of 99.9% with a 10% sampling ratio. As a leading natural wealth, forests play an essential role in the development and prosperity of countries. Hence, monitoring their changes can lead to proper management and planning in conserving these resources. This study presents a novel unsupervised forest change detection method comprising two main steps: (1) generating a reliable difference image, i.e. sensitive to forest changes, and (2) producing a change map in which forest changes and their details (e.g. edges) are well characterized. In step (1), the vegetation indices- and spectral-based difference images were first calculated using a novel weighted angular operator. Afterwards, the difference images were combined using the 2D-multiresolution singular value decomposition (2D-MSVD) fusion approach to generate a noise-resistant difference image, in which forest changes are accurately highlighted. In step (2), the expectation-maximization gaussian mixture model (EMGMM) was first applied to the fused difference image to reach an initial binary change map. Next, an edge-aware MRF (EAMRF) model was initialized by the EMGMM-derived change map and then was adopted to achieve the final change map. Experimental results were achieved by utilizing five bi-temporal images acquired by the Landsat 5 and 8, and Sentinel 2 satellite sensors. The results indicated the efficacy of the proposed fused difference image in reflecting the forest changes. Compared with the traditional MRF method, the boundaries and geometrical shapes of changed regions were well preserved in the change maps obtained by EAMRF. The edge penalty function embedded in EAMRF also made this model converge in less running time compared to the traditional MRF algorithm. Furthermore, EAMRF outperformed the other change detection methods in terms of quantitative and qualitative results, demonstrating its high potential for forest change detection applications. Due to the advent of powerful parallel processing tools, including modern Graphics Processing Units (GPU), new deep learning algorithms, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), have significantly altered the state-of-the-art algorithms in satellite classification of complex environments. Recent studies have demonstrated that the generic feature maps extracted from CNNs are incredibly effective in wetland classification. The main drawback of very deep CNNs is described as structurally complex, causing the need for extensive training data. To address deep Convolutional Neural Network's limitations, a timely and computationally efficient CNN architecture is proposed in this paper. The results of the proposed model were compared to other well-known CNNs (i.e., GoogleNet and SqueezeNet) and several machine learning algorithms, including Random Forest, Gaussian Naïve Bayes, and the Bayesian Optimized Tree. Results showed while significantly reduced the training time, the proposed deep learning method outperformed GoogleNet and SqueezeNet by about 12.71% and 12.2% in terms of mean overall accuracy, respectively. Recently, there has been a significant increase in efforts to better inventory and manage important ecosystems across Canada using advanced remote sensing techniques. In this study, we improved the method and results of our first-generation Canadian wetland inventory map at 10-m resolution. Iin order to increase wetland classification accuracy, the main contributions of this new study are adding more training data to the classification process and training Random Forest (RF) models on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform within the boundaries of ecozones rather than provinces. A considerable effort has been devoted to data collection, preparation, standardization of datasets for each ecozone. The data cleaning reveals a data gap in several Northern ecozones. Accordingly, high-resolution optical data, from Worldview-2 and Pleiades, were acquired to delineate wetland training data based on visual interpretation in those regions. By using this well-distributed training data, this second generation wetland inventory map represents an improvement of 7% compared to the first generation map. Accuracy varied from 76% to 91% in different ecozones depending on available resources. Furthermore, the results of RF variable importance, which was carried out for each ecozone, demonstrate that | S V V | 2 | S V H | 2 and NDVI extracted from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data, respectively, were the most important features for wetland mapping. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data have gained interest for a variety of remote sensing applications, given the capability of SAR sensors to operate independent of solar radiation and day/night conditions. However, the radiometric quality of SAR images is hindered by speckle noise, which affects further image processing and interpretation. As such, speckle reduction is a crucial pre-processing step in many remote sensing studies based on SAR imagery. This study proposes a new adaptive de-speckling method based on a Gaussian Markov Random Field (GMRF) model. The proposed method integrates both pixel-wised and contextual information using a weighted summation technique. As a by-product of the proposed method, a de-speckled pseudo-span image, which is obtained from the least-squares analysis of the de-speckled multi-polarization channels, is also produced. Experimental results from the medium resolution, fully polarimetric L-band ALOS PALSAR data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm compared to other well-known de-speckling approaches. The de-speckled images produced by the proposed method maintainthe mean value of the original image in homogenous areas, while preserving the edges of features in heterogeneous regions. In particular, the equivalent number of look (ENL) achieved using the proposed method improves by about 15% and 47% compared to the NL-SAR and SARBM3D de-speckling approaches, respectively. Other evaluation indices, such as the mean and variance of the ratio image also reveal the superiority of the proposed method relative to other de-speckling approaches examined in this study. Mapping linear disturbances, including pipelines, roads, and seismic lines created by resource exploration, traditionally relies on very high-resolution remote sensing data, which usually limits results to small operational areas.With increased availability of low-cost medium-resolution satellite data, complete information of linear disturbances may be monitored and reconstructed from processing time series images from more than 30 years archival data. In this study, we propose a novel approach to incorporate spectral, spatial, and temporal information for mapping and characterizing linear disturbances based on time series Landsat imagery. The mapping process involves 4 steps: line detection based on a multiscale directional template, line updating based on reappearance frequency, line connection using the Hough transform, and linear disturbance characterization. The proposed method was tested and evaluated over 4 sites in Alberta, Canada, with various linear densities for detecting and reconstructing linear disturbances from 1984-2013 using time series Landsat imagery. The results obtained by processing time series Landsat imagery have shown improved accuracy in detecting linear disturbances over that from single or multiple Landsat images. Wetlands are important ecosystems that are linked to climate change mitigation. As 25% of global wetlands are located in Canada, accurate and up-to-date wetland classification is of high importance, nationally and internationally. The advent of deep learning techniques has revolutionized the current use of machine learning algorithms to classify complex environments, specifically in remote sensing. In this paper, we explore the potential and possible limitations to be overcome regarding the use of ensemble deep learning techniques for complex wetland classification and discusses the potential and limitation of various solo convolutional neural networks (CNNs), including DenseNet, GoogLeNet, ShuffleNet, MobileNet, Xception, Inception-ResNet, ResNet18, and ResNet101 in three different study areas located in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada (i.e., Avalon, Gros Morne, and Grand Falls). Moreover, to improve the classification accuracies of wetland classes of bog, fen, marsh, swamp, and shallow water, the results of the three best CNNs in each study area is fused using three supervised classifiers of random forest (RF), bagged tree (BTree), Bayesian optimized tree (BOT), and one unsupervised majority voting classifier. The results suggest that the ensemble models, in particular BTree, have a valuable role to play in the classification of wetland classes of bog, fen, marsh, swamp, and shallow water. The ensemble CNNs show an improvement of 9.63–19.04% in terms of mean producer's accuracy compared to the solo CNNs, to recognize wetland classes in three different study areas. This research indicates a promising potential for integrating ensemble-based learning and deep learning for operational large area land cover, particularly complex wetland type classification. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an effective tool in detecting building damage. At present, more and more studies detect building damage using a single post-event fully polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) image, because it permits faster and more convenient damage detection work. However, the existence of non-buildings and obliquely-oriented buildings in disaster areas presents a challenge for obtaining accurate detection results using only post-event PolSAR data. To solve these problems, a new method is proposed in this work to detect completely collapsed buildings using a single post-event full polarization SAR image. The proposed method makes two improvements to building damage detection. First, it provides a more effective solution for non-building area removal in post-event PolSAR images. By selecting and combining three competitive polarization features, the proposed solution can remove most non-building areas effectively, including mountain vegetation and farmland areas, which are easily confused with collapsed buildings. Second, it significantly improves the classification performance of collapsed and standing buildings. A new polarization feature was created specifically for the classification of obliquely-oriented and collapsed buildings via development of the optimization of polarimetric contrast enhancement (OPCE) matching algorithm. Using this developed feature combined with texture features, the proposed method effectively distinguished collapsed and obliquely-oriented buildings, while simultaneously also identifying the affected collapsed buildings in error-prone areas. Experiments were implemented on three PolSAR datasets obtained in fully polarimetric mode: Radarsat-2 PolSAR data from the 2010 Yushu earthquake in China (resolution: 12 m, scale of the study area: 50   km 2 ); ALOS PALSAR PolSAR data from the 2011 Tohoku tsunami in Japan (resolution: 23.14 m, scale of the study area: 113   km 2 ); and ALOS-2 PolSAR data from the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake in Japan (resolution: 5.1 m, scale of the study area: 5   km 2 ). Through the experiments, the proposed method was proven to obtain more than 90% accuracy for built-up area extraction in post-event PolSAR data. Public littering and discarded trash are, despite the effort being put to limit it, still a serious ecological, aesthetic, and social problem. The problematic waste is usually localised and picked up by designated personnel, which is a tiresome, time-consuming task. This paper proposes a low-cost solution enabling the localisation of trash and litter objects in low altitude imagery collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during an autonomous patrol mission. The objects of interest are detected in the acquired images and put on the global map using a set of onboard sensors commonly found in typical UAV autopilots. The core object detection algorithm is based on deep, convolutional neural networks. Since the task is domain-specific, a dedicated dataset of images containing objects of interest was collected and annotated. The dataset is made publicly available, and its description is contained in the paper. The dataset was used to test a range of embedded devices enabling the deployment of deep neural networks for inference onboard the UAV. The results of measurements in terms of detection accuracy and processing speed are enclosed, and recommendations for the neural network model and hardware platform are given based on the obtained values. The complete system can be put together using inexpensive, off-the-shelf components, and perform autonomous localisation of discarded trash, relieving human personnel of this burdensome task, and enabling automated pickup planning. Recently, it was demonstrated that low-frequency wavelength-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images could be considered to follow an additive mixing model due to their backscatter characteristics. This simplification allows for the use of source separation methods, such as robust principal component analysis (RPCA) via principal component pursuit (PCP), for detecting changes in those images. In this manuscript, a change detection method for wavelength-resolution SAR images based on image stack through RPCA is proposed. The method aims to explore both the temporal and flight heading diversity of a set of wavelength-resolution multitemporal SAR images in order to detect concealed targets in forestry areas. A heuristic based on three rules for better exploring the RPCA results is introduced, and a new configurable parameter for false alarm reduction based on the analysis of image windows is proposed. The method is evaluated using real data obtained from measurements of the ultrawideband (UWB) very high-frequency (VHF) SAR system CARABAS-II. Experiments for stacks of four and seven reference images are conducted, and the use of reference images acquired with different flight headings is explored. The results indicate that a gain in performance can be achieved by using large image stacks containing, at least, one image of each possible flight heading of the data set, which can result in a probability of detection (PD) above 99% for a false alarm rate (FAR) as low as one false alarm per three square kilometers. Thanks to increasing urban development, it has become important for municipalities to understand how ecological processes function. In particular, urban wetlands are vital habitats for the people and the animals living amongst them. This is because wetlands provide great services, including water filtration, flood and drought mitigation, and recreational spaces. As such, several recent urban development plans are currently needed to monitor these invaluable ecosystems using time- and cost-efficient approaches. Accordingly, this study is designed to provide an initial response to the need of wetland mapping in the City of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Canada. Specifically, we produce the first high-resolution wetland map of the City of St. John's using advanced machine learning algorithms, very high-resolution satellite imagery, and airborne LiDAR. An object-based random forest algorithm is applied to features extracted from WorldView-4, GeoEye-1, and LiDAR data to characterize five wetland classes, namely bog, fen, marsh, swamp, and open water, within an urban area. An overall accuracy of 91.12% is obtained for discriminating different wetland types and wetland surface water flow connectivity is also produced using LiDAR data. Complementary information between two difference images (DI's) has great contribution to improve change detection performances. Based on the effectiveness and flexibility of the multiple kernel learning (MKL) in information fusion, we develop a multiple kernel graph cut (MKGC) algorithm for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image change detection. An energy function containing a weighted summation kernel is proposed for fusing the complementary information between the subtraction image and the ratio image. By iteratively minimizing the energy function, the kernel weights, region parameters and region labels are estimated automatically and optimally. Besides of it avoids modeling, MKGC also has a complete description of the changed areas and the strong noise immunity. Experiments on real GaoFen-3 SAR data set demonstrate the effectiveness of the MKGC algorithm, and illustrate that it is a good candidate for SAR image change detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Invasive plants are non-native species that can spread rapidly, leading to detrimental economic, ecological, or environmental impact. In aquatic systems such as the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in California, USA, management agencies use manned aerial vehicles (MAV) imaging spectroscopy missions to map and track annual changes in invasive aquatic plants. Advances in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and sensor miniaturization are enabling higher spatial resolution species mapping, which is promising for early detection of invasions before they spread over larger areas. This study compared maps made from UAV-based imaging spectroscopy with the manned airborne imaging spectroscopy-derived maps that are currently produced for monitoring invasive aquatic plants in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Concurrent imagery was collected using the MAV mounted HyMap sensor and the UAV mounted Nano-Hyperspec at a wetland study site and classification maps generated using random forest models were compared. Classification accuracies were comparable between the Nano- and HyMap-derived maps, with the Nano-derived map having a slightly higher overall accuracy. Additionally, the higher resolution of the Nano imagery allowed detection of patches of water hyacinth present in the study site that the HyMap could not. However, it would not be feasible to operate the Nano as a replacement to HyMap at scale despite its improved detection capabilities due to the high costs associated with overcoming area coverage limitations. Overall, UAV-based imaging spectroscopy provides comparable or improved capability, and we suggest it could be used to supplement existing monitoring programs by focusing on target areas of high ecologic or economic priority. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imaging systems have recently gained significant attention from researchers and practitioners as a cost-effective means for agro-environmental applications. In particular, machine learning algorithms have been applied to UAV-based remote sensing data for enhancing the UAV capabilities of various applications. This systematic review was performed on studies through a statistical meta-analysis of UAV applications along with machine learning algorithms in agro-environmental monitoring. For this purpose, a total number of 163 peer-reviewed articles published in 13 high-impact remote sensing journals over the past 20 years were reviewed focusing on several features, including study area, application, sensor type, platform type, and spatial resolution. The meta-analysis revealed that 62% and 38% of the studies applied regression and classification models, respectively. Visible sensor technology was the most frequently used sensor with the highest overall accuracy among classification articles. Regarding regression models, linear regression and random forest were the most frequently applied models in UAV remote sensing imagery processing. Finally, the results of this study confirm that applying machine learning approaches on UAV imagery produces fast and reliable results. Agriculture, forestry, and grassland mapping were found as the top three UAV applications in this review, in 42%, 22%, and 8% of the studies, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

North America is covered in 2.5 million km2 of wetlands, which is the remainder of an estimated 56% of wetlands lost since the 1700s. This loss has resulted in a decrease in important habitat and services of great ecological, economic, and recreational benefits to humankind. To better manage these ecosystems, since the 1970s, wetlands in North America have been classified with increasing regularity using remote sensing technology. Since then, optimal methods for wetland classification by numerous researchers have been examined, assessed, modified, and established. Over the past several decades, a large number of studies have investigated the effects of different remote sensing factors, such as data type, spatial resolution, feature selection, classification methods, and other parameters of interest on wetland classification in North America. However, the results of these studies have not yet been synthesized to determine best practices and to establish avenues for future research. This paper reviews the last 40 years of research and development on North American wetland classification through remote sensing methods. A meta-analysis of 157 relevant articles published since 1980 summarizes trends in 23 parameters, including publication, year, study location, application of specific sensors, and classification methods. This paper also examines is the relationship between several remote sensing parameters (e.g., spatial resolution and type of data) and resulting overall accuracies. Finally, this paper discusses the future of remote sensing of wetlands in North America with regard to upcoming technologies and sensors. Given the increasing importance and vulnerability of wetland ecosystems under the climate change influences, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive review in support of the continued, improved, and novel applications of remote sensing for wetland mapping across North America and to provide a fundamental knowledge base for future studies in this field. Despite recent research on the potential of dual- (DP) and full-polarimetry (FP) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for crop mapping, the capability of compact polarimetry (CP) SAR data has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This is of particular concern, given the availability of such data from RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) shortly. Previous studies have illustrated potential for accurate crop mapping using DP and FP SAR features, yet what contribution each feature makes to the model accuracy is not well investigated. Accordingly, this study examined the potential of the early- to mid-season (i.e., May to July) RADARSAT-2 SAR images for crop mapping in an agricultural region in Manitoba, Canada. Various classification scenarios were defined based on the extracted features from FP SAR data, as well as simulated DP and CP SAR data at two different noise floors. Both overall and individual class accuracies were compared for multi-temporal, multi-polarization SAR data using the pixel- and object-based random forest (RF) classification schemes. The late July C-band SAR observation was the most useful data for crop mapping, but the accuracy of single-date image classification was insufficient. Polarimetric decomposition features extracted from CP and FP SAR data produced relatively equal or slightly better classification accuracies compared to the SAR backscattering intensity features. The RF variable importance analysis revealed features that were sensitive to depolarization due to the volume scattering are the most important FP and CP SAR data. Synergistic use of all features resulted in a marginal improvement in overall classification accuracies, given that several extracted features were highly correlated. A reduction of highly correlated features based on integrating the Spearman correlation coefficient and the RF variable importance analyses boosted the accuracy of crop classification. In particular, overall accuracies of 88.23%, 82.12%, and 77.35% were achieved using the optimized features of FP, CP, and DP SAR data, respectively, using the object-based RF algorithm.
