Topological defect lines (TDLs) in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) are standard examples of generalized symmetries in quantum field theory. Integrable lattice incarnations of these TDLs, such as those provided by spin/anyonic chains, provide a crucial playground to investigate their properties, both analytically and numerically. Here, a family of parameter-dependent integrable lattice models is presented, which realize different TDLs in a given CFT as the parameter is varied. These models are based on the general quantum-inverse scattering construction, and involve inhomogeneities of the spectral parameter. Both defect hamiltonians and (defect) line operators are obtained in closed form. By varying the inhomogeneities, renormalization group flows between different TDLs (such as the Verlinde lines associated with the Virasoro primaries $(1,s)$ and $(s,1)$ in diagonal minimal CFTs) are then studied using different aspects of the Bethe-ansatz as well as ab-initio numerical techniques. We study the entanglement of a segment of length $\ell$ in an XXZ chain with one free extremity and the other connected to the rest of the system with a weak bond. We find that the von-Neumann entropy exhibits terms of order $O(1)$ with strong parity effects, that probe the physics associated with the weakened bond and its behavior under the RG (Kane Fisher problem). In contrast with the XX case studied previously the entropy difference $\delta S\equiv S^e-S^o$ gives rise now to a "resonance" curve which depends on the product $\ell T_B$, with $1/T_B$ a characteristic length scale akin to the Kondo length in Kondo problems. The problem is studied both numerically using DMRG and analytically near the healed and split fixed points. Interestingly - and in contrast with what happens in other impurity problems- $\delta S$ can, at least at lowest order, be tackled by conformal perturbation theory.

Starting with the Ising model, statistical models with global symmetries provide fruitful approaches to interesting physical systems, for example percolation or polymers. These include the $O(n)$ model (symmetry group $O(n)$) and the Potts model (symmetry group $S_Q$). Both models make sense for $n,Q\in \mathbb{C}$ and not just $n,Q\in \mathbb{N}$, and both give rise to a conformal field theory in the critical limit. Here, we study similar models based on the unitary group $U(n)$. We focus on the two-dimensional case, where the models can be described either as gases of non-intersecting orientable loops, or as alternating spin chains. This allows us to determine their spectra either by computing a twisted torus partition function, or by studying representations of the walled Brauer algebra. In the critical limit, our models give rise to a CFT with global $U(n)$ symmetry, which exists for any $n\in\mathbb{C}$. Its spectrum is similar to those of the $O(n)$ and Potts CFTs, but a bit simpler. We conjecture that the $O(n)$ CFT is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold of the $U(n)$ CFT, where $\mathbb{Z}_2$ acts as complex conjugation., Comment: 36 pages

It was recently suggested -- based on general self-consistency arguments as well as results from the bootstrap (arXiv:2005.07708, arXiv:2007.11539, arXiv:2007.04190) -- that the CFT describing the $Q$-state Potts model is logarithmic for generic values of $Q$, with rank-two Jordan blocks for $L_0$ and ${\mkern 1.5mu\overline{\mkern-1.5mu L\mkern-1.5mu}\mkern 1.5mu}_0$ in many sectors of the theory. This is despite the well-known fact that the lattice transfer matrix (or Hamiltonian) is diagonalizable in (arbitrary) finite size. While the emergence of Jordan blocks only in the limit $L\to\infty$ is perfectly possible conceptually, diagonalizability in finite size makes the measurement of logarithmic couplings (whose values are analytically predicted in arXiv:2007.11539, arXiv:2007.04190) very challenging. This problem is solved in the present paper (which can be considered a companion to arXiv:2007.11539), and the conjectured logarithmic structure of the CFT confirmed in detail by the study of the lattice model and associated "emerging Jordan blocks.", Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2403.09881

Topological interfaces of two-dimensional conformal field theories contain information about symmetries of the theory and exhibit striking spectral and entanglement characteristics. While lattice realizations of these interfaces have been proposed for unitary minimal models, the same has remained elusive for the paradigmatic Luttinger liquid {\it i.e.,} the free, compact boson model. Here, we show that a topological interface of two Luttinger liquids can be realized by coupling special one-dimensional superconductors. The gapless excitations in the latter carry charges that are specific integer multiples of the charge of Cooper-pairs. The aforementioned integers are determined by the windings in the target space of the bosonic fields -- a crucial element required to give rise to nontrivial topological interfaces. The latter occur due to the perfect transmission of certain number of Cooper-pairs across the interface. The topological interfaces arise naturally in Josephson junction arrays with the simplest case being realized by an array of experimentally-demonstrated~$0-\pi$ qubits, capacitors and ordinary Josephson junctions. Signatures of the topological interface are obtained through entanglement entropy computations. In particular, the subleading contribution to the so-called interface entropy is shown to differ from existing field theory predictions. The proposed lattice model provides an experimentally-realizable alternative to spin and anyon chains for the analysis of several conjectured conformal fixed points which have so far eluded ab-initio investigation., Comment: 6 pageas, 3 figures

Topological/perfectly-transmissive defects play a fundamental role in the analysis of the symmetries of two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs). In the present work, spin chain regularizations for these defects are proposed and analyzed in the case of the three-state Potts CFT. In particular, lattice versions for all the primitive defects are presented, with the remaining defects obtained from the fusion of the primitive ones. The defects are obtained by introducing modified interactions around two given sites of an otherwise homogeneous spin chain with periodic boundary condition. The various primitive defects are topological on the lattice except for one, which is topological only in the scaling limit. The lattice models are analyzed using a combination of exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group techniques. Low-lying energy spectra for different defect Hamiltonians as well as entanglement entropy of blocks located symmetrically around the defects are computed. The latter provides a convenient way to compute the $g$-function which characterizes various defects. Finally, the eigenvalues of the line operators in the "crossed channel'' and fusion of different defect lines are also analyzed. Using methods from the conformal bootstrap, we study the properties of Noether currents in the critical $O(n)$ loop model. We confirm that they do not give rise to a Kac-Moody algebra (for $n\neq 2$), a result expected from the underlying lack of unitarity. By studying four-point functions in detail, we fully determine the current-current OPEs, and thus obtain several structure constants with physical meaning. We find in particular that the terms $:\!J\bar{J}\!:$ in the identity and adjoint channels vanish exactly, invalidating the argument made in \cite{car93-1} that adding orientation-dependent interactions to the model should lead to continuously varying exponents in self-avoiding walks. We also determine the residue of the identity channel in the $JJ$ two-point function, finding that it coincides both with the result of a transfer-matrix computation for an orientation-dependent correlation function in the lattice model, and with an earlier Coulomb gas computation of Cardy \cite{car93}. In a recent paper, Gorbenko and Zan [arXiv:2005.07708] observed that $O(n)$ symmetry alone does not protect the well-known renormalization group flow from the dilute to the dense phase of the two-dimensional $O(n)$ model under thermal perturbations. We show in this paper that the required "extra protection" is topological in nature, and is related to the existence of certain non-invertible topological defect lines. We define these defect lines and discuss the ensuing topological protection, both in the context of the $O(n)$ lattice model and in its recently understood continuum limit, which takes the form of a conformal field theory governed by an interchiral algebra., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures

In two-dimensional statistical physics, correlation functions of the O(N) and Potts models may be written as sums over configurations of non-intersecting loops. We define sums associated to a large class of combinatorial maps (also known as ribbon graphs). We allow disconnected maps, but not maps that include monogons. Given a map with n vertices, we obtain a function of the moduli of the corresponding punctured Riemann surface. Due to the map's combinatorial (rather than topological) nature, that function is single-valued, and we call it an n-point correlation function. We conjecture that in the critical limit, such functions form a basis of solutions of certain conformal bootstrap equations. They include all correlation functions of the O(N) and Potts models, and correlation functions that do not belong to any known model. We test the conjecture by counting solutions of crossing symmetry for four-point functions on the sphere., Comment: 40 pages, v2: clarified a few subtle points

We derive by the traditional algebraic Bethe ansatz method the Bethe equations for the general open XXZ spin chain with non-diagonal boundary terms under the Nepomechie constraint [J. Phys. A 37 (2004), 433-440, arXiv:hep-th/0304092]. The technical difficulties due to the breaking of $\mathsf{U}(1)$ symmetry and the absence of a reference state are overcome by an algebraic construction where the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb Hamiltonian is realised in a new $U_{\mathfrak{q}}\mathfrak{sl}_2$-invariant spin chain involving infinite-dimensional Verma modules on the edges [J. High Energy Phys. 2022 (2022), no. 11, 016, 64 pages, arXiv:2207.12772]. The equivalence of the two Hamiltonians is established by proving Schur-Weyl duality between $U_{\mathfrak{q}}\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra. In this framework, the Nepomechie condition turns out to have a simple algebraic interpretation in terms of quantum group fusion rules.

We determine the spaces of states of the two-dimensional $O(n)$ and $Q$-state Potts models with generic parameters $n,Q\in \mathbb{C}$ as representations of their known symmetry algebras. While the relevant representations of the conformal algebra were recently worked out, it remained to determine the action of the global symmetry groups: the orthogonal group for the $O(n)$ model, and the symmetric group $S_Q$ for the $Q$-state Potts model. We do this by two independent methods. First we compute the twisted torus partition functions of the models at criticality. The twist in question is the insertion of a group element along one cycle of the torus: this breaks modular invariance, but allows the partition function to have a unique decomposition into characters of irreducible representations of the global symmetry group. Our second method reduces the problem to determining branching rules of certain diagram algebras. For the $O(n)$ model, we decompose representations of the Brauer algebra into representations of its unoriented Jones--Temperley--Lieb subalgebra. For the $Q$-state Potts model, we decompose representations of the partition algebra into representations of the appropriate subalgebra. We find explicit expressions for these decompositions as sums over certain sets of diagrams, and over standard Young tableaux. We check that both methods agree in many cases. We introduce new $U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2$-invariant boundary conditions for the open XXZ spin chain. For generic values of $q$ we couple the bulk Hamiltonian to an infinite-dimensional Verma module on one or both boundaries of the spin chain, and for $q=e^{\frac{i\pi}{p}}$ a $2p$-th root of unity $ - $ to its $p$-dimensional analogue. Both cases are parametrised by a continuous "spin" $\alpha\in\mathbb{C}$. To motivate our construction, we first specialise to $q=i$, where we obtain a modified XX Hamiltonian with unrolled quantum group symmetry, whose spectrum and scaling limit is computed explicitly using free fermions. In the continuum, this model is identified with the $(\eta,\xi)$ ghost CFT on the upper-half plane with a continuum of conformally invariant boundary conditions on the real axis. The different sectors of the Hamiltonian are identified with irreducible Virasoro representations. Going back to generic $q$ we investigate the algebraic properties of the underlying lattice algebras. We show that if $q^\alpha\notin\pm q^{\mathbb{Z}}$, the new boundary coupling provides a faithful representation of the blob algebra which is Schur-Weyl dual to $U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2$. Then, modifying the boundary conditions on both the left and the right, we obtain a representation of the universal two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra. The generators and parameters of these representations are computed explicitly in terms of $q$ and $\alpha$. Finally, we conjecture the general form of the Schur-Weyl duality in this case. This paper is the first in a series where we will study, at all values of the parameters, the spectrum and its continuum limit, the representation content of the relevant lattice algebras and the fusion properties of these new spin chains., Comment: 54 pages

In the presence of boundaries, the entanglement entropy in lattice models is known to exhibit oscillations with the (parity of the) length of the subsystem, which however decay to zero with increasing distance from the edge. We point out in this article that, when the subsystem starts at the boundary and ends at an impurity, oscillations of the entanglement (as well as of charge fluctuations) appear which do not decay with distance, and which exhibit universal features. We study these oscillations in detail for the case of the XX chain with one modified link (a conformal defect) or two successive modified links (a relevant defect), both numerically and analytically. We then generalize our analysis to the case of extended (conformal) impurities, which we interpret as SSH models coupled to metallic leads. In this context, the parity effects can be interpreted in terms of the existence of non-trivial topological phases.

Entanglement entropy (EE) in critical quantum spin chains described by 1+1D conformal field theories contains signatures of the universal characteristics of the field theory. Boundaries and defects in the spin chain give rise to universal contributions in the EE. In this work, we analyze these universal contributions for the critical Ising and XXZ spin chains for different conformal boundary conditions and defects. For the spin chains with boundaries, we use the boundary states for the corresponding continuum theories to compute the subleading contribution to the EE analytically and provide supporting numerical computation for the spin chains. Entanglement entropy~(EE) contains signatures of many universal properties of conformal field theories~(CFTs), especially in the presence of boundaries or defects. In particular, {\it topological} defects are interesting since they reflect internal symmetries of the CFT, and have been extensively analyzed with field-theoretic techniques with striking predictions. So far, however, very few ab-initio, lattice computations of these predictions have been available. Here, we present an ab-initio analysis of EE for the Ising model in the presence of a topological defect. While the behavior of the EE depends, as expected, on the geometric arrangement of the subsystem with respect to the defect, we find that zero-energy modes give rise to crucial finite-size corrections. Importantly, contrary to the field-theory predictions, the universal subleading term in the EE when the defect lies at the edge of the subsystem arises entirely due to these zero-energy modes and is not directly related to the modular S-matrix of the Ising CFT., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures (updated published version)

We define the two-dimensional $O(n)$ conformal field theory as a theory that includes the critical dilute and dense $O(n)$ models as special cases, and depends analytically on the central charge. For generic values of $n\in\mathbb{C}$, we write a conjecture for the decomposition of the spectrum into irreducible representations of $O(n)$. We then explain how to numerically bootstrap arbitrary four-point functions of primary fields in the presence of the global $O(n)$ symmetry. We determine the needed conformal blocks, including logarithmic blocks, including in singular cases. We argue that $O(n)$ representation theory provides upper bounds on the number of solutions of crossing symmetry for any given four-point function. We study some of the simplest correlation functions in detail, and determine a few fusion rules. We count the solutions of crossing symmetry for the $30$ simplest four-point functions. The number of solutions varies from $2$ to $6$, and saturates the bound from $O(n)$ representation theory in $21$ out of $30$ cases., Comment: 49 pages, v3: improved explanations on a few points

It has long been understood that non-trivial Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) with vanishing central charge ($c=0$) are logarithmic. So far however, the structure of the identity module -- the (left and right) Virasoro descendants of the identity field -- had not been elucidated beyond the stress-energy tensor $T$ and its logarithmic partner $t$ (the solution of the "$c\to 0$ catastrophe"). In this paper, we determine this structure together with the associated OPE of primary fields up to level $h=\bar{h}=2$ for polymers and percolation CFTs. This is done by taking the $c\to 0$ limit of $O(n)$ and Potts models and combining recent results from the bootstrap with arguments based on conformal invariance and self-duality. We find that the structure contains a rank-3 Jordan cell involving the field $T\bar{T}$, and is identical for polymers and percolation. Non-compact Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) are central to several aspects of string theory and condensed matter physics. They are characterised, in particular, by the appearance of a continuum of conformal dimensions. Surprisingly, such CFTs have been identified as the continuum limits of lattice models with a finite number of degrees of freedom per site. However, results have so far been restricted to the case of periodic boundary conditions, precluding the exploration via lattice models of aspects of non-compact boundary CFTs and the corresponding D-brane constructions. The present paper follows a series of previous works on a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-staggered XXZ spin chain, whose continuum limit is known to be a non-compact CFT related with the Euclidian black hole sigma model. By using the relationship of this spin chain with an integrable $D_2^2$ vertex model, we here identify integrable boundary conditions that lead to a continuous spectrum of boundary exponents, and thus correspond to non-compact branes. In the context of the Potts model on a square lattice, they correspond to wired boundary conditions at the physical antiferromagnetic critical point. The relations with the boundary parafermion theories are discussed as well. We are also able to identify a boundary renormalisation group flow from the non-compact boundary conditions to the previously studied compact ones.

We investigate the action of discretized Virasoro generators, built out of generators of the lattice Temperley-Lieb algebra ("Koo-Saleur generators"[arXiv:hep-th/9312156]), in the critical XXZ quantum spin chain. We explore the structure of the continuum-limit Virasoro modules at generic central charge for the XXZ vertex model, paralleling [arXiv:2007.11539] for the loop model. We find again indecomposable modules, but this time not logarithmic ones. The limit of the Temperley-Lieb modules $\mathcal{W}_{j,1}$ for $j\neq 0$ contains pairs of "conjugate states" with conformal weights $(h_{r,s},h_{r,-s})$ and $(h_{r,-s},h_{r,s})$ that give rise to dual structures: Verma or co-Verma modules. The limit of $\mathcal{W}_{0,\mathfrak{q}^{\pm2}}$ contains diagonal fields $(h_{r,1},h_{r,1})$ and gives rise to either only Verma or only co-Verma modules, depending on the sign of the exponent in $\mathfrak{q}^{\pm 2}$. In order to obtain matrix elements of Koo-Saleur generators at large system size $N$ we use Bethe ansatz and Quantum Inverse Scattering methods, computing the form factors for relevant combinations of three neighbouring spin operators. Relations between form factors ensure that the above duality exists already at the lattice level. We also study in which sense Koo-Saleur generators converge to Virasoro generators. We consider convergence in the weak sense, investigating whether the commutator of limits is the same as the limit of the commutator? We find that it coincides only up to the central term. As a side result we compute the ground-state expectation value of two neighbouring Temperley-Lieb generators in the XXZ spin chain., Comment: 61 pages, 13 figures, 12 tables v2: Minor edits. The spectrum of conformal weights for the CFT describing the two-dimensional critical $Q$-state Potts model (or its close cousin, the dense loop model) has been known for more than 30 years. However, the exact nature of the corresponding $\hbox{Vir}\otimes\overline{\hbox{Vir}}$ representations has remained unknown up to now. Here, we solve the problem for generic values of $Q$. This is achieved by a mixture of different techniques: a careful study of "Koo--Saleur generators" [arXiv:hep-th/9312156], combined with measurements of four-point amplitudes, on the numerical side, and OPEs and the four-point amplitudes recently determined using the "interchiral conformal bootstrap" in [arXiv:2005.07258] on the analytical side. We find that null-descendants of diagonal fields having weights $(h_{r,1},h_{r,1})$ (with $r\in \mathbb{N}^*$) are truly zero, so these fields come with simple $\hbox{Vir}\otimes\overline{\hbox{Vir}}$ ("Kac") modules. Meanwhile, fields with weights $(h_{r,s},h_{r,-s})$ and $(h_{r,-s},h_{r,s})$ (with $r,s\in\mathbb{N}^*$) come in indecomposable but not fully reducible representations mixing four simple $\hbox{Vir}\otimes\overline{\hbox{Vir}}$ modules with a familiar "diamond" shape. The "top" and "bottom" fields in these diamonds have weights $(h_{r,-s},h_{r,-s})$, and form a two-dimensional Jordan cell for $L_0$ and $\bar{L}_0$. This establishes, among other things, that the Potts-model CFT is logarithmic for $Q$ generic. Unlike the case of non-generic (root of unity) values of $Q$, these indecomposable structures are not present in finite size, but we can nevertheless show from the numerical study of the lattice model how the rank-two Jordan cells build up in the infinite-size limit., Comment: 37 pages, 3 figures, 15 tables. v2: Minor edits to beginning of Section 7.1 and Acknowledgments v3: 38 pages. Analog quantum simulation has the potential to be an indispensable technique in the investigation of complex quantum systems. In this work, we numerically investigate a one-dimensional, faithful, analog, quantum electronic circuit simulator built out of Josephson junctions for one of the paradigmatic models of an integrable quantum field theory: the quantum sine-Gordon (qSG) model in 1+1 space-time dimensions. We analyze the lattice model using the density matrix renormalization group technique and benchmark our numerical results with existing Bethe ansatz computations. Furthermore, we perform analytical form-factor calculations for the two-point correlation function of vertex operators, which closely agree with our numerical computations. Finally, we compute the entanglement spectrum of the qSG model. We compare our results with those obtained using the integrable lattice-regularization based on the quantum XYZ chain and show that the quantum circuit model is less susceptible to corrections to scaling compared to the XYZ chain. We provide numerical evidence that the parameters required to realize the qSG model are accessible with modern-day superconducting circuit technology, thus providing additional credence towards the viability of the latter platform for simulating strongly interacting quantum field theories., Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures

Based on the spectrum identified in our earlier work [arXiv:1809.02191], we numerically solve the bootstrap to determine four-point correlation functions of the geometrical connectivities in the $Q$-state Potts model. Crucial in our approach is the existence of "interchiral conformal blocks", which arise from the degeneracy of fields with conformal weight $h_{r,1}$, with $r\in\mathbb{N}^*$, and are related to the underlying presence of the "interchiral algebra" introduced in [arXiv:1207.6334]. We also find evidence for the existence of "renormalized" recursions, replacing those that follow from the degeneracy of the field $\Phi_{12}^D$ in Liouville theory, and obtain the first few such recursions in closed form. This hints at the possibility of the full analytical determination of correlation functions in this model., Comment: 53 pages, 30 figures

We consider the problem of analytically continuing energies computed with the Bethe ansatz, as posed by the study of non-compact integrable spin chains. By introducing an imaginary extensive twist in the Bethe equations, we show that one can expand the analytic continuation of energies in the scaling limit around another 'pseudo-vacuum' sitting at a negative number of Bethe roots, in the same way as around the usual pseudo-vacuum. We show that this method can be used to compute the energy levels of some states of the $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ integrable spin chain in the infinite-volume limit, and as a proof of principle recover the ground-state value previously obtained in [1] (for the case of spins $s=0, \bar{s}=-1$) by extrapolating results in small sizes. These results represent, as far as we know, the first (partial) description of the spectrum of $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ non-compact spin chains in the thermodynamic limit., Comment: 50 pages

Entanglement or modular Hamiltonians play a crucial role in the investigation of correlations in quantum field theories. In particular, in 1+1 space-time dimensions, the spectra of entanglement Hamiltonians of conformal field theories (CFTs) for certain geometries are related to the spectra of the physical Hamiltonians of corresponding boundary CFTs. As a result, conformal invariance allows exact computation of the spectra of the entanglement Hamiltonians for these models. In this work, we perform this computation of the spectrum of the entanglement Hamiltonian for the free compactified boson CFT over a finite spatial interval. We compare the analytical results obtained for the continuum theory with numerical simulations of a lattice-regularized model for the CFT using density matrix renormalization group technique. To that end, we use a lattice regularization provided by superconducting quantum electronic circuits, built out of Josephson junctions and capacitors. Up to non-universal effects arising due to the lattice regularization, the numerical results are compatible with the predictions of the exact computations., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

We introduce a characterization of topological order based on bulk oscillations of the entanglement entropy and the definition of an `entanglement gap', showing that it is generally applicable to pure and disordered quantum systems. Using exact diagonalization and the strong disorder renormalization group method, we demonstrate that this approach gives results in agreement with the use of traditional topological invariants, especially in cases where topological order is known to persist in the presence of off-diagonal bond disorder. The entanglement gap is then used to analyze classes of quantum systems with alternating bond types, allowing us to construct their topological phase diagrams. The validity of these phase diagrams is verified in limiting cases of dominant bond types, where the solution is known.

We present an exact mapping between the staggered six-vertex model and an integrable model constructed from the twisted affine $D_2^2$ Lie algebra. Using the known relations between the staggered six-vertex model and the antiferromagnetic Potts model, this mapping allows us to study the latter model using tools from integrability. We show that there is a simple interpretation of one of the known K-matrices of the $D_2^2$ model in terms of Temperley-Lieb algebra generators, and use this to present an integrable Hamiltonian that turns out to be in the same universality class as the antiferromagnetic Potts model with free boundary conditions. The intriguing degeneracies in the spectrum observed in related works (arXiv:nlin/0002050 and arXiv:1707.09260) are discussed., Comment: 32 pages; typos corrected

The "bootstrap determination" of the geometrical correlation functions in the two-dimensional Potts model proposed in a paper [arXiv:1607.07224] was later shown in [arXiv:1809.02191] to be incorrect, the actual spectrum of the model being considerably more complex than initially conjectured. We provide in this paper a geometrical interpretation of the four-point functions built in [arXiv:1607.07224], and explain why the results obtained by these authors, albeit incorrect, appeared so close to those of their numerical simulations of the Potts model. Our strategy is based on a cluster expansion of correlation functions in RSOS minimal models, and a subsequent numerical and algebraic analysis of the corresponding $s$-channel spectrum, in full analogy with our early work on the Potts model [arXiv:1809.02191]. Remarkable properties of the lattice amplitudes are uncovered, which explain in particular the truncation of the spectrum of [arXiv:1809.02191] to the much simpler one of the RSOS models, and which will be used in a forthcoming paper to finally determine the geometric four-point functions of the Potts model itself., Comment: 47 pages, 12 figures

We provide systematic analysis on a non-Hermitian PT -symmetric quantum impurity system both in and out of equilibrium, based on exact computations. In order to understand the interplay between non-Hermiticity and Kondo physics, we focus on a prototypical noninteracting impurity system, the resonant level model, with complex coupling constants. Explicitly constructing biorthogonal basis, we study its thermodynamic properties as well as the Loschmidt echo starting from the initially disconnected two free fermion chains. Remarkably, we observe the universal crossover physics in the Loschmidt echo, both in the PT broken and unbroken regimes. We also find that the ground state quantities we compute in the PT broken regime can be obtained by analytic continuation. It turns out that Kondo screening ceases to exist in the PT broken regime, which was also previously predicted in the non-hermitian Kondo model. We initiate a study of the boundary version of the square-lattice $Q$-state Potts antiferromagnet, with $Q \in [0,4]$ real, motivated by the fact that the continuum limit of the corresponding bulk model is a non-compact CFT, closely related with the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ Euclidian black-hole coset model. While various types of conformal boundary conditions (discrete and continuous branes) have been formally identified for the the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ coset CFT, we are only able in this work to identify conformal boundary conditions (CBC) leading to a discrete boundary spectrum. The conformal boundary conditions (CBC) we find are of two types. The first is free boundary Potts spins, for which we confirm an old conjecture for the generating functions of conformal levels, and show them to be related to characters in a non-linear deformation of the $W_\infty$ algebra. The second type of CBC - which corresponds to restricting the values of the Potts spins to a subset of size $Q_1$, or its complement of size $Q-Q_1$, at alternating sites along the boundary - is new, and turns out to be conformal in the antiferromagnetic case only. Using algebraic and numerical techniques, we show that the corresponding spectrum generating functions produce all the characters of discrete representations for the coset CFT. The normalizability bounds of the associated discrete states in the coset CFT are found to have a simple interpretation in terms of boundary phase transitions in the lattice model. For $\sqrt{Q} = 2 \cos \frac{\pi}{k}$, with $k \ge 3$ integer, we show also how our boundary conditions can be reformulated in terms of a RSOS height model. The spectrum generating functions are then identified with string functions of the compact $SU(2)_{k-2} / U(1)$ parafermion theory (with symmetry $Z_{k-2}$). Investigation of strongly interacting, nonlinear quantum field theories (QFT-s) remains one of the outstanding challenges of modern physics. Here, we describe analog quantum simulators for nonlinear QFT-s using mesoscopic superconducting circuit lattices. Using the Josephson effect as the source of nonlinear interaction, we investigate generalizations of the quantum sine-Gordon model. In particular, we consider a two-field generalization, the double sine-Gordon model. In contrast to the sine-Gordon model, this model can be purely quantum integrable, when it does not admit a semi-classical description - a property that is generic to many multi-field QFT-s. The primary goal of this work is to investigate different thermodynamic properties of the double sine-Gordon model and propose experiments that can capture its subtle quantum integrability. First, we analytically compute the mass-spectrum and the ground state energy in the presence of an external `magnetic' field using Bethe ansatz and conformal perturbation theory. Second, we calculate the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations for the model and analyze its finite temperature properties. We obtain the ground state magnetization of the Heisenberg and XXZ spin chains in a magnetic field $h$ as a series in $\sqrt{h_c-h}$, where $h_c$ is the smallest field for which the ground state is fully polarized. All the coefficients of the series can be computed in closed form through a recurrence formula that involves only algebraic manipulations. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group calculations we study the transport properties ($I-V$ curves and shot noise) of the interacting resonant level model (IRLM) in a large range of the interaction parameter $U$, in the scaling limit. We find that these properties can be described remarkably well by those of the Boundary sine-Gordon model (BSG), which are known analytically (Fendley, Ludwig and Saleur, 1995). We argue that the two models are nevertheless in different universality classes out of equilibrium: this requires a delicate discussion of their infra-red (IR) properties ({\it i.e.} at low voltage), where we prove in particular that the effective tunneling charge is $e$ in the infra-red regime of the IRLM (except at the self-dual point where it jumps to $2e$), while it is known to be a continuously varying function of $U$ in the BSG. This behavior is confirmed by careful analysis of the numerical data in the IR. The remarkable agreement of the transport properties, especially in the crossover region, remains however unexplained.

Two-dimensional sigma models on superspheres $S^{r-1|2s} \cong OSp(r|2s)/OSp(r - 1|2s)$ are known to flow to weak coupling $g_{\sigma} \to 0$ in the IR when $r - 2s < 2$. Their long-distance properties are described by a free 'Goldstone' conformal field theory (CFT) with $r - 1$ bosonic and $2s$ fermionic degrees of freedom, where the $OSp(r|2s)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken. This behavior is made possible by the lack of unitarity. The purpose of this paper is to study logarithmic corrections to the free theory at small but non-zero coupling $g_{\sigma}$. We do this in two ways. On the one hand, we perform perturbative calculations with the sigma model action, which are of special technical interest since the perturbed theory is logarithmic. On the other hand, we study an integrable lattice discretization of the sigma models provided by vertex models and spin chains with $OSp(r|2s)$ symmetry. Detailed analysis of the Bethe equations then confirms and completes the field theoretic calculations. The supersymmetric reformulation of physical observables in the Chalker-Coddington model (CC) for the plateau transition in the integer quantum Hall effect leads to a reformulation of its critical properties in terms of a 2D non-compact loop model or a 1D non-compact $gl(2|2)$ spin chain. Following a proposal by Ikhlef, Fendley and Cardy, we define and study a series of truncations of these loop models and spin chains, involving a finite and growing number of degrees of freedom per site. The case of the first truncation is solved analytically using the Bethe-ansatz. It is shown to exhibit many of the qualitative features expected for the untruncated theory, including a quadratic spectrum of exponents with a continuous component, and a normalizable ground state below that continuum. Quantitative properties are however at odds with the results of simulations on the CC model. Higher truncations are studied only numerically. We revisit in this paper the problem of connectivity correlations in the Fortuin-Kasteleyn cluster representation of the two-dimensional $Q$-state Potts model conformal field theory. In a recent work [M. Picco, S. Ribault and R. Santachiara, SciPost Phys. 1, 009 (2016); arXiv:1607.07224], results for the four-point functions were obtained, based on the bootstrap approach, combined with simple conjectures for the spectra in the different fusion channels. In this paper, we test these conjectures using lattice algebraic considerations combined with extensive numerical studies of correlations on infinite cylinders. We present a new and efficient method for deriving finite-size effects in statistical physics models solvable by Bethe Ansatz. It is based on the study of the functional that maps a function to the sum of its evaluations over the Bethe roots. A simple and powerful constraint is derived when applying this functional to infinitely derivable test functions with compact support, that generalizes then to more general test functions. The method is presented in the context of the simple spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain for which we derive the finite-size corrections to leading eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian for any configuration of Bethe numbers with real Bethe roots. The equivalent of fusion in boundary conformal field theory (CFT) can be realized quite simply in the context of lattice models by essentially glueing two open spin chains. This has led to many developments, in particular in the context of chiral logarithmic CFT. We consider in this paper a possible generalization of the idea to the case of bulk conformal field theory. This is of course considerably more difficult, since there is no obvious way of merging two closed spin chains into a big one. In an earlier paper, two of us had proposed a "topological" way of performing this operation in the case of models based on the affine Temperley-Lieb (ATL) algebra, by exploiting the associated braid group representation and skein relations. In the present work, we establish - using, in particular, Frobenius reciprocity - the resulting fusion rules for standard modules of ATL in the generic as well as partially degenerate cases. These fusion rules have a simple interpretation in the continuum limit. However, unlike in the chiral case this interpretation does not match the usual fusion in non-chiral CFTs. The relationship between bulk and boundary properties is one of the founding features of (Rational) Conformal Field Theory. Our goal in this paper is to explore the possibility of having an equivalent relationship in the context of lattice models. We focus on models based on the Temperley-Lieb algebra, and use the concept of braid translation, which is a natural way to close an open spin chain by adding an interaction between the first and last spins using braiding to bring them next to each other. The interaction thus obtained is in general non-local, but has the key feature that it is expressed solely in terms of the algebra for the open spin chain - the ordinary Temperley-Lieb algebra and its blob algebra generalization. This is in contrast with the usual periodic spin chains which involve only local interactions, and are described by the periodic TL algebra. We show that for the Restricted Solid-On-Solid models, which are known to be described by minimal unitary CFTs in the continuum limit, the braid translation in fact does provide the ordinary periodic model starting from the open model with fixed boundary conditions on the two sides of the strip. This statement has a precise mathematical formulation, which is a pull-back map between irreducible modules of, respectively, the blob algebra and the affine TL algebra. We then turn to the same kind of analysis for two models whose continuum limits are Logarithmic CFTs - the alternating gl(1|1) and sl(2|1) spin chains. We find that the result for minimal models does not hold any longer: braid translation of the relevant TL modules does not give rise to the modules known to be present in the periodic chains. In the gl(1|1) case, the content in terms of the irreducibles is the same, as well as the spectrum, but the detailed structure (like logarithmic coupling) is profoundly different. One dimensional topological insulators are characterized by edge states with exponentially small energies. According to one generalization of topological phases to non-Hermitian systems, a finite system in a non-trivial topological phase displays surface states with exponentially long life times. In this work we explore the possibility of exploiting such non-Hermitian topological phases to enhance the quantum coherence of a fiducial qubit embedded in a dissipative environment. We first show that a network of qubits interacting with lossy cavities can be represented, in a suitable super-one-particle sector, by a non-Hermitian "Hamiltonian" of the desired form. We then study, both analytically and numerically, one-dimensional geometries with up to three sites per unit cell, and up to a topological winding number $W=2$. For finite-size systems the number of edge modes is a complicated function of $W$ and the system size $N$. However we find that there are precisely $W$ modes localized at one end of the chain. In such topological phases the quibt's coherence lifetime is exponentially large in the system size. We verify that, for $W>1$, at large times, the Lindbladian evolution is approximately a non-trivial unitary. For $W=2$ this results in Rabi-like oscillations of the qubit's coherence measure., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

We study the effects of a weakened link in random antiferromagnetic spin chains. We show that healing occurs, and that homogeneity is restored at low energy, in a way that is qualitatively similar to the fate of impurities in clean ferromagnetic spin chains, or in Luttinger liquids with attractive interactions. Healing in the random case occurs even without interactions, and is characteristic of the random singlet phase. Using real space renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods, we characterize this universal healing crossover by studying the entanglement across the weak link. We identify a crossover healing length $L^*$ that separates a regime where the system is cut in half by the weak link from a fixed point where the spin chain is healed. We study the time dependence of the entanglement between two quantum wires after suddenly connecting them via tunneling through an impurity. The result at large times is given by the well known formula $S(t) \approx {1\over 3}\ln {t}$. We show that the intermediate time regime can be described by a universal cross-over formula $S=F(tT_K)$, where $T_K$ is the crossover (Kondo) temperature: the function $F$ describes the dynamical "healing" of the system at large times. We discuss how to obtain analytic information about $F$ in the case of an integrable quantum impurity problem using the massless Form-Factors formalism for twist and boundary condition changing operators. Entanglement entropy has proven invaluable to our understanding of quantum criticality. It is natural to try to extend the concept to non-unitary quantum mechanics, which has seen growing interest from areas as diverse as open quantum systems, non-interacting electronic disordered systems, or non-unitary conformal field theory (CFT). We propose and investigate such an extension here, by focussing on the case of one-dimensional quantum group symmetric or supergroup symmetric spin chains. We show that the consideration of left and right eigenstates combined with appropriate definitions of the trace leads to a natural definition of R\'enyi entropies in a large variety of models. We interpret this definition geometrically in terms of related loop models and calculate the corresponding scaling in the conformal case. This allows us to distinguish the role of the central charge and effective central charge in rational minimal models of CFT, and to define an effective central charge in other, less well understood cases. We revisit the phase diagram of spin-1 $su(2)_k$ anyonic chains, originally studied by Gils {\it et. al.} [Phys. Rev. B, {\bf 87} (23) (2013)]. These chains possess several integrable points, which were overlooked (or only briefly considered) so far. Exploiting integrability through a combination of algebraic techniques and exact Bethe ansatz results, we establish in particular the presence of new first order phase transitions, a new critical point described by a $Z_k$ parafermionic CFT, and of even more phases than originally conjectured.
