In this paper, we study the performance of multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-aided unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels. For that purpose, we used accurate closed-form approximations for the channel distributions to derive closed-form approximations for the outage probability (OP), average symbol error probability (ASEP), and the average channel capacity assuming independent non-identically distributed (i.ni.d.) channels. Furthermore, we derive the asymptotic OP at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime to get more insights into the system performance. We also study some practical scenarios related to RISs, UAV, and destination locations and illustrate their impact on the system performance through simulations. Finally, we provide an optimization problem on the transmit power of each channel.

This paper analyzes the performance of multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-aided networks. The paper also provides some optimization results on the number of reflecting elements on RISs and the optimal placement of RISs. We first derive accurate closed-form approximations for RIS channels' distributions assuming independent non-identically distributed (i.ni.d.) Nakagami-\emph{m} fading environment. Then, the approximate expressions for outage probability (OP) and average symbol error probability are derived in closed-form. Furthermore, to get more insights into the system performance, we derive the asymptotic OP at the high signal-to-noise ratio regime and provide closed-form expressions for the system diversity order and coding gain. Finally, the accuracy of our theoretical analysis is validated through Monte-Carlo simulations. The obtained results show that the considered RIS scenario can provide a diversity order of $\frac{a}{2}K$, where $a$ is a function of the Nakagami fading parameter $m$ and the number of meta-surface elements $N$, and $K$ is the number of RISs.

A one-dimensional (1-D) anomalous-diffusive molecular communication channel is considered, wherein the devices (transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX)) can move in either direction along the axis. For modeling the anomalous diffusion of information carrying molecules (ICM) as well as that of the TX and RX, the concept of time-scaled Brownian motion is explored. In this context, a novel closed-form expression for the first hitting time density (FHTD) is derived. Further, the derived FHTD is validated through particle-based simulation. For the transmission of binary information, the timing modulation is exploited. Furthermore, the channel is assumed as a binary erasure channel (BEC) and analyzed in terms of achievable information rate (AIR).

In this letter, we consider the scenario of decode-and-forward relay network with reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted source and relays in the presence of interference. We derive approximate closed-form expression for the system outage probability assuming Rayleigh fading channels and opportunistic relaying scheme. In addition, we study the system behavior at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, where the diversity order and coding gain are obtained and analyzed. The results show that the system can achieve a diversity order of Gd = min(N1,N2)K, where N1 and N2 are the numbers of reflecting elements at the source and relays, respectively, and K is the number of relays. In addition, findings illustrate that for the same diversity order, utilizing one relay with multiple reflecting elements gives better performance than utilizing multiple relays with a single reflecting element. Furthermore, findings illustrate that the interference at the destination is more severe on the system performance than the interference at the relays. Therefore, under the same interference powers and for a fixed number of relays K, results show that the case where the first hop is dominating the performance N1 < N2 gives better results in terms of coding gain than the case where N2 < N1., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2011.05070

This letter proposes and evaluates the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted source multiuser mixed radio frequency (RF)/free space optical (FSO) relay network with opportunistic user scheduling. Closed-form analytical approximations are derived for the outage probability and average symbol error probability (ASEP) assuming Rayleigh and Gamma-Gamma fading models for the RF and FSO channels, respectively. Moreover, to gain more insight into the system behavior, the system is studied at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime whereby the diversity order and coding gain are derived and analyzed. The results illustrate that the system performance is dominated by the worst hop and that the diversity order is equal to Gd = min(KN,alpha,beta,zeta^2), where K is the number of RF users, N is the number of reflecting elements at each user, alpha and beta are the atmospheric turbulence parameters of the FSO link, and zeta^2 is a measure for the alignment quality of the FSO link. In addition, findings show that for the same diversity order, N is more impactful on the system performance than K through the coding gain Gc.

This letter investigates the impact of co-channel interference (CCI) on the performance of a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying network with a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted source. We consider one source, multiple DF relays, and one destination with CCI at both the relays and destination. We derive closed-form accurate approximations for the system outage probability assuming Rayleigh fading channels. In addition, we study the system performance at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, where closed-form expressions are derived for the asymptotic outage probability, diversity order, and the coding gain. The results show that the number of reflecting elements N at the source has a small effect on the coding gain of the system and not on the diversity order. Furthermore, findings illustrate that the number of relays K is affecting the diversity order and is more impactful on the performance than N. Finally, results show that utilizing RIS at the source node mitigates the interference effect at the relay nodes.

This work studies and optimizes the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided networks in Nakagami-m fading environment. First, accurate closed-form approximations for the channel distributions are derived. Then, closed-form formulas for the system outage probability, average symbol error probability (ASEP), and the channel capacity are obtained. Furthermore, we provide three different optimization approaches for finding the optimum number of reflecting elements to achieve a target outage probability. At the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, a closed-form expression for the asymptotic outage probability is obtained to give more insights into the system performance. Results show that the considered system can achieve a diversity order of (a+1)/2, where a is a function of the Nakagami-m fading parameter m and the number of reflecting elements N. Moreover, findings show that m is more influential on the diversity order than N. Finally, the achieved expressions are applicable to non-integer values of m and any number of meta-surface elements N.

Integrating visible light communication (VLC) and radio-frequency (RF) networks can improve the performance of communication systems in terms of coverage and data rates. However, adding RF links to VLC networks weakens the secrecy performance due to the broadcast and ubiquitous nature of RF links. This paper studies the physical layer security (PLS) in cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (CoNOMA) hybrid VLC/RF systems. Consider a VLC system, where two entrusted users close to a VLC access point (AP) help an out-of-coverage legitimate user using RF signals in the presence of an eavesdropper. The AP transmits data to both entrusted users and the legitimate user using the principle of NOMA, where the entrusted users harvest energy from the received light intensity, decode the legitimate user's message, forward it using a RF link, and then decode their messages. It is required to maximize the secrecy rate at the legitimate user under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints using beamforming and DC-bias and power allocation. Different solutions are proposed for both active and passive eavesdropper cases, using semidefinite relaxation, zero-forcing, beamforming, and jamming. Numerical results compare between the different proposed approaches and show how the proposed approaches contribute in improving the secrecy performance of the proposed model.

This paper looks at the performance of an outdoor visible light (OVLC) communication system used for Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV). In the proposed system an amplify-and-forward (AF) opportunistic scheme is used to extend the range of information broadcast from a traffic light to vehicles. The Gamma-Gamma channel gain and the Lambertian direct current (DC) channel gain are used to model the fading coefficient of each transmission and the short and thermal noise models used to represent the system noise. The statistics of the system are examined by deriving closed-form expressions for the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and probability density function (PDF) for the equivalent end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Novel closed form equations are also developed for the outage probability and ergodic capacity. Numerical simulations performed showed that the system performance in terms of both outage probability and ergodic capacity improves with decreasing turbulence intensity. This paper proposes and optimizes a cooperative non-orthogonal multiple-access (Co-NOMA) scheme in the context of multicell visible light communications (VLC) networks, as a means to mitigate inter-cell interference in Co-NOMA-enabled systems. Consider a network with multiple VLC access points (APs), where each AP serves two users using light intensity. In each cell, the weak user (the cell edge user) can be served either directly by the VLC AP, or through the strong user that can decode the weak user's message and forward it through the radio-frequency (RF) link. The paper then considers the problem of maximizing the network throughput under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints by allocating the powers of the users' messages and APs' transmit powers, and determining the serving links of each weak user (i.e., VLC or hybrid VLC/RF). The paper solves such a non-convex problem by first finding closed form solutions of the joint users' powers and link selection for a fixed AP power allocation. The APs' transmit powers are then iteratively solved in an outer loop using the golden section method. Simulation results show how the proposed solution and scheme improve the system sum-rate and fairness as compared to conventional non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) schemes.

Despite the promising high-data rate features of visible light communications (VLC), they still suffer from unbalanced services due to blockages and channel fluctuation among users. This paper introduces and evaluates a new transmission scheme which adopts cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (Co-NOMA) in hybrid VLC/radio-frequency (RF) systems, so as to improve both system sum-rate and fairness. Consider a network consisting of one VLC access point (AP) and multiple strong and weak users, where each weak user is paired with a strong user. Each weak user can be served either directly by the VLC AP, or via the strong user which converts light information received through the VLC link, and forwards the information to the weak user via the RF link. The paper then maximizes a network-wide weighted sum-rate, so as to jointly determine the strong-weak user-pairs, the serving link of each weak user (i.e., either direct VLC or hybrid VLC/RF), and the power of each user message, subject to user connectivity and transmit power constraints. The paper tackles such a mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem using an iterative approach. Simulations show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the VLC network performance (i.e., sum-rate and fairness) as compared to the conventional NOMA scheme.

Visible light communications (VLC) have emerged as strong candidates for meeting the escalating demand for high data rates. Consider a VLC network, where multiple access-points (APs) serve both energy-harvesting users (EHUs), i.e., users which harvest energy from light intensity, and information-users (IUs), i.e., users which gather data information. In order to jointly balance the achievable sum-rate at the IUs and the energy harvested by the EHUs, the paper considers maximizing a network-wide utility, which consists of a weighted-sum of the IUs sum-rate and the EHUs harvested energy, subject to individual IU rate constraint, individual EHU harvested-energy constraint, and AP power constraints, so as to jointly determine the direct current (DC)-bias value at each AP, and the users powers. The paper solves such a difficult non-convex optimization problem using an iterative approach which relies on inner convex approximations, and compensates for the used approximations using proper outer-loop updates. The paper further considers solving the special cases of the problem, i.e., maximizing the sum-rate, and maximizing the total harvested-energy, both subject to the same constraints. Numerical results highlight the significant performance improvement of the proposed algorithms, and illustrate the impacts of the network parameters on the performance trade-off between the sum-rate and harvested-energy.

The evolving explosion in high data rate services and applications will soon require the use of untapped, abundant unregulated spectrum of the visible light for communications to adequately meet the demands of the fifth-generation (5G) mobile technologies. Radio-frequency (RF) networks are proving to be scarce to cover the escalation in data rate services. Visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a great potential solution, either in replacement of, or complement to, existing RF networks, to support the projected traffic demands. Despite of the prolific advantages of VLC networks, VLC faces many challenges that must be resolved in the near future to achieve a full standardization and to be integrated to future wireless systems. Here, we review the new, emerging research in the field of VLC networks and lay out the challenges, technological solutions, and future work predictions. Specifically, we first review the VLC channel capacity derivation, discuss the performance metrics and the associated variables; the optimization of VLC networks are also discussed, including resources and power allocation techniques, user-to-access point (AP) association and APs-to-clustered-users-association, APs coordination techniques, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) VLC networks, simultaneous energy harvesting and information transmission using the visible light, and the security issue in VLC networks. Finally, we propose several open research problems to optimize the various VLC networks by maximizing either the sum rate, fairness, energy efficiency, secrecy rate, or harvested energy.
