Abstract

The main objective of the work undertaken in this paper is to study the possibility of optimizing the flow structure and thermal performance of a heat exchanger numerically. For this purpose, the nanofluid water-Al 2 O 3 is chosen as the cooling fluid, which is in forced convective and laminar flow in a two-dimensional rectangular microchannel. Then, as a first step, the impact of the chosen nanoparticles' concentration in the range was studied: (0 ⩽ Φ ⩽ 0, 04). The Nusselt number and the coefficient of friction were analyzed. The results show that the thermal performance has been remarkably improved (more than 40%). These results are mainly due to increased effective thermal conductivity and viscose coolant (nanofluid). In a second step, the impact of the solid diamond blocks' insertion in the initially laminar flow was analyzed. The inserts' presence strongly disturbed the flow and caused a modification of its structure (velocity field, temperature field, etc.). The results show that for the same concentration of corpuscles, the average Nusselt number and friction coefficient increase much more with the Reynolds number's rise compared to the case without inserts. The study has thus allowed us to show that a nanofluid of high concentration can best adopt as the cooling fluid of a heat sink, and such a heat sink with diamond inserts has the best thermohydrodynamic performance (more than 40% increase). The differential equations system's resolution governing the problem is ensured by a finite volume scheme associated with the SIMPLE algorithm (Semi Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equation). The study performed with a Reynolds number chosen in a range corresponding to the laminar regime: (600 ⩽ Re ⩽ 1400). The concentration of the nanoparticles taken in the field: (0 ⩽ Φ ⩽ 0.04) corresponding to the validation range of formulas (7) and (9).

International audience; Nomex honeycomb structures are attracting increasing interest from many industrial sectors andtheir use is becoming more widespread. These structures are widely used in sandwich materials aslightweight structures having good mechanical properties. Due to its manufacture the machining ofNomex honeycomb structures present many technical and scientific problems, specifically the lowthickness of the walls constituting the honeycomb cells, the composite nature of the paper forming theNomex and low density of this type of these structures. The objective of this work is to implement ascientifically rigorous approach to predict and analyze the machinability of this type of material. Avalidation of the model was made through experimental studies with different cutting conditions.Then, a follow-up of the cutting forces and observations of the machined surface quality, using theisotropic elastoplastic approach.

Abstract

This work presents numerical results of turbulent forced convection in a horizontal channel provided with heating two baffles mounted on its lower wall. The upper and lower surfaces are maintained at the high temperature and the fluid inlet temperature is lower than the temperature of the walls. Calculations are made by using a finite volume method and an efficient numerical procedure is introduced for studying the effect of inclination angles on heat transfer and flow field for air and high Reynolds number. Results are reported in terms of streamlines, isotherms and local Nusselt numbers. Overall, we can conclude that the results of the study show that the inclination angles of the heated plate alter significantly the temperature distribution, the flow field and the heat transfer in channel.

Abstract

In the present paper, numerical simulation is carried out to investigate turbulent flow structure and heat transfer analysis in a two-dimensional horizontal plane channel, contains square blocks arranged in tandem or side by side arrangement. The k-e model is used to describe turbulence phenomena, and governing equations are solved by a finite volume method, with SIMPLEC algorithm is applied for the coupling of the velocity-pressure variables. The power-law scheme is used for the discretization of the convective terms in the momentum equations. Presented results illustrates the effect of the transverse (GT) and longitudinal (GL) spacing between the blocks on flow structure and heat transfer for a wide range of Reynolds number (104= Re =5×104). 38. Numerical modelling of transport time scales within Nador lagoon (Morocco)

Abstract

The intrinsic cleaning capacity of semi-enclosed hydrodynamic basins can be controlled by the time spent by each water particle inside it, giving an idea of the efficiency of this cleaning process. However, the determination of water residence time, and/or water exposure time, is thus of major interest in the environmental management. In this paper, an integrated 2D depth-averaged hydrodynamic dispersion model is used to simulate the time scales of tracer transport processes within Nador lagoon, Morocco, for various tidal forcingconditions. Tidal hydrodynamics are predicted using a finite volume solver of the shallow water equations on an unstructured triangular mesh fitted to the lagoon geometry. Tracer dispersion is predicted by solving the Eulerian advection-diffusion equation. Residence and exposure times are determined from the remnant function obtained from the concentration of passive tracers released inside the lagoon. Numerical simulations covering spring and neap tidal cycles are used to investigate the influence of tidal forcing on residence and exposuretimes in sub-basins of the Nador lagoon, from which overall mean values of the time scales are estimated for the entire lagoon allowing for the return flow factor of the basin. The results demonstrate the importance of tidal cycles on transport time scales and self-cleansing of the Nador lagoon; for example, it is found thatself-cleansing takes about 1 day longer at neap tide than at spring tide.

Abstract

A balanced adaptive scheme is proposed for the numerical solution of the coupled non-linear shallow water equations and depth-averaged advection-diffusion pollutant transport equation. The scheme uses the Roe approximate Riemann solver with centred discretization for advection terms and the Vazquez scheme for source terms. It is designed to handle non-uniform bed topography on triangular unstructured meshes, while satisfying the conservation property. Dynamic mesh adaptation criteria are based on the local pollutant concentration gradients. The model is validated for steady flow over irregular bed topography, recirculation due to a sidewall expansion in a frictionless channel, and pollution advection in a flat-bottomed channel. An idealised application to the simulation of pollution dispersion in the Bay of Tangier, Morocco is presented, which demonstrates the capability of the dynamically adaptive grid model to represent water quality scenarios in a bay of non-uniform bed topography and complicated shoreline.
