Abstract

A fast effective intracavity technique is proposed for optical shuttering and wavelength selection in copper vapor lasers and copper bromide lasers by inserting a polychromatic acoustooptic modulator in a low-intensity section of a classical negative branch unstable resonator. Single pulse or multiple-pulse operation in one- or two-wavelength emission is achieved in a CuBr laser system.

Abstract

The removal process of degraded superficial layers from marble samples by Nd:YAG lasers was studied while simulating operative conditions of stone artwork restoration. The effects of laser irradiation at 1064 nm with three different pulse durations of 6 ns, 20 [[micro]second], and 200 [[micro]second] were investigated by time-resolved shadowgraphy and emission spectroscopy of the ejection plume to characterize the specific interaction regimes, with particular concern given to the occurrence of side effects, such as thermal and mechanical damages to the substrate, that could affect the laser cleaning procedure. 25. Phenomenological Characterisation of Stone Cleaning by Different Laser Pulse Duration and Wavelength.

Abstract

The present work focuses on the main phenomenological features of stone cleaning by lasers. They are the removal rate, degree of cleaning, and chromatic appearance of the treated surface associated with different conservation problems and laser parameters. A set of three different outdoor stone conservation problems were investigated here. The measurement of the ablation rates were carried out on encrusted stone artefacts and two sets of prepared samples in order to derive general behaviour through repeatable measurements. The analysis of the irradiation tests provided a quantification of the different efficiencies, degree of cleaning, and chromatic appearances associated with the fundamental harmonic of Q-switching, long Q-switching, and short free running Nd:YAG lasers (1,064 nm), as well as with the second harmonic of Q-switching sources (532 nm).
