The direct parametrisation method for invariant manifolds is adjusted to consider a varying parameter. More specifically, the case of systems experiencing a Hopf bifurcation in the parameter range of interest are investigated, and the ability to predict the amplitudes of the limit cycle oscillations after the bifurcation is demonstrated. The cases of the Ziegler pendulum and Beck's column, both of which have a follower force, are considered for applications. By comparison with the eigenvalue trajectories in the conservative case, it is advocated that using two master modes to derive the ROM, instead of only considering the unstable one, should give more accurate results. Also, in the specific case where an exceptional bifurcation point is met, a numerical strategy enforcing the presence of Jordan blocks in the Jacobian matrix during the procedure, is devised. The ROMs are constructed for the Ziegler pendulum having two and three degrees of freedom, and then Beck's column is investigated, where a finite element procedure is used to space discretize the problem. The numerical results show the ability of the ROMs to correctly predict the amplitude of the limit cycles up to a certain range, and it is shown that computing the ROM after the Hopf bifurcation gives the most satisfactory results. This feature is analyzed in terms of phase space representations, and the two proposed adjustments are shown to improve the validity range of the ROMs.

Urgent applications like wildfire management and renewable energy generation require precise, localized weather forecasts near the Earth's surface. However, weather forecast products from machine learning or numerical weather models are currently generated on a global regular grid, on which a naive interpolation cannot accurately reflect fine-grained weather patterns close to the ground. In this work, we train a heterogeneous graph neural network (GNN) end-to-end to downscale gridded forecasts to off-grid locations of interest. This multi-modal GNN takes advantage of local historical weather observations (e.g., wind, temperature) to correct the gridded weather forecast at different lead times towards locally accurate forecasts. Each data modality is modeled as a different type of node in the graph. Using message passing, the node at the prediction location aggregates information from its heterogeneous neighbor nodes. Experiments using weather stations across the Northeastern United States show that our model outperforms a range of data-driven and non-data-driven off-grid forecasting methods. Our approach demonstrates how the gap between global large-scale weather models and locally accurate predictions can be bridged to inform localized decision-making.

Triggered by the realization that AI emulators can rival the performance of traditional numerical weather prediction models running on HPC systems, there is now an increasing number of large AI models that address use cases such as forecasting, downscaling, or nowcasting. While the parallel developments in the AI literature focus on foundation models -- models that can be effectively tuned to address multiple, different use cases -- the developments on the weather and climate side largely focus on single-use cases with particular emphasis on mid-range forecasting. We close this gap by introducing Prithvi WxC, a 2.3 billion parameter foundation model developed using 160 variables from the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2). Prithvi WxC employs an encoder-decoder-based architecture, incorporating concepts from various recent transformer models to effectively capture both regional and global dependencies in the input data. The model has been designed to accommodate large token counts to model weather phenomena in different topologies at fine resolutions. Furthermore, it is trained with a mixed objective that combines the paradigms of masked reconstruction with forecasting. We test the model on a set of challenging downstream tasks namely: Autoregressive rollout forecasting, Downscaling, Gravity wave flux parameterization, and Extreme events estimation. The pretrained model with 2.3 billion parameters, along with the associated fine-tuning workflows, has been publicly released as an open-source contribution via Hugging Face.

This paper describes an online tool for the visualization of medical emergency locations, randomly generated sample paths of medical emergencies, and the animation of ambulance movements under the control of various dispatch methods in response to these emergencies. The tool incorporates statistical models for forecasting emergency locations and call arrival times, the simulation of emergency arrivals and ambulance movement trajectories, and the computation and visualization of performance metrics such as ambulance response time distributions. Data for the Rio de Janeiro Emergency Medical Service are available on the website. A user can upload emergency data for any Emergency Medical Service, and can then use the visualization tool to explore the uploaded data. A user can also use the statistical tools and/or the simulation tool with any of the dispatch methods provided, and can then use the visualization tool to explore the computational output. Future enhancements include the ability of a user to embed additional dispatch algorithms into the simulation; the tool can then be used to visualize the simulation results obtained with the newly embedded algorithms.

Point Group (PG) symmetries play a fundamental role in many aspects of theoretical chemistry and computational materials science. With the objective to automatize the search of PG symmetry operations of generic atomic clusters, we present a new algorithm called Symmetry Operation FInder (SOFI). SOFI addresses the problem of identifying PG symmetry by framing it as a degenerate shape-matching problem, where the multiple solutions correspond to distinct symmetry operations. The developed algorithm is compared against three other algorithms dedicated to PG identification, on a large set of atomic clusters. The results, along with some illustrative use cases, showcase the effectiveness of SOFI. Microscopic traffic simulations are used to evaluate the impact of infrastructure modifications and evolving vehicle technologies, such as connected and automated driving. Simulated vehicles are controlled via car-following, lane-changing and junction models, which are designed to imitate human driving behavior. However, physics-based car-following models (CFMs) cannot fully replicate measured vehicle trajectories. Therefore, we present model extensions for the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM), of which some are already included in the Extended Intelligent Driver Model (EIDM), to improve calibration and validation results. They consist of equations based on vehicle dynamics and drive off procedures. In addition, parameter selection plays a decisive role. Thus, we introduce a framework to calibrate CFMs using drone data captured at a signalized intersection in Stuttgart, Germany. We compare the calibration error of the Krauss Model with the IDM and EIDM. In this setup, the EIDM achieves a 17.78 % lower mean error than the IDM, based on the distance difference between real world and simulated vehicles. Adding vehicle dynamics equations to the EIDM further improves the results by an additional 18.97 %. The calibrated vehicle-driver combinations are then investigated by simulating the traffic in three different scenarios: at the original intersection, in a closed loop and in a stop-and-go wave. The advent of text-image models, most notably CLIP, has significantly transformed the landscape of information retrieval. These models enable the fusion of various modalities, such as text and images. One significant outcome of CLIP is its capability to allow users to search for images using text as a query, as well as vice versa. This is achieved via a joint embedding of images and text data that can, for instance, be used to search for similar items. Despite efficient query processing techniques such as approximate nearest neighbor search, the results may lack precision and completeness. We introduce CLIP-Branches, a novel text-image search engine built upon the CLIP architecture. Our approach enhances traditional text-image search engines by incorporating an interactive fine-tuning phase, which allows the user to further concretize the search query by iteratively defining positive and negative examples. Our framework involves training a classification model given the additional user feedback and essentially outputs all positively classified instances of the entire data catalog. By building upon recent techniques, this inference phase, however, is not implemented by scanning the entire data catalog, but by employing efficient index structures pre-built for the data. Our results show that the fine-tuned results can improve the initial search outputs in terms of relevance and accuracy while maintaining swift response times

Clustering in education, particularly in large-scale online environments like MOOCs, is essential for understanding and adapting to diverse student needs. However, the effectiveness of clustering depends on its interpretability, which becomes challenging with high-dimensional data. Existing clustering approaches often neglect individual differences in feature importance and rely on a homogenized feature set. Addressing this gap, we introduce Interpret3C (Interpretable Conditional Computation Clustering), a novel clustering pipeline that incorporates interpretable neural networks (NNs) in an unsupervised learning context. This method leverages adaptive gating in NNs to select features for each student. Then, clustering is performed using the most relevant features per student, enhancing clusters' relevance and interpretability. We use Interpret3C to analyze the behavioral clusters considering individual feature importances in a MOOC with over 5,000 students. Patient hand-off and triage are two fundamental problems in health care. Often doctors must painstakingly summarize complex findings to efficiently communicate with specialists and quickly make decisions on which patients have the most urgent cases. In pursuit of these challenges, we present (1) a model with state-of-art radiology report summarization performance using (2) a novel method for augmenting medical data, and (3) an analysis of the model limitations and radiology knowledge gain. We also provide a data processing pipeline for future models developed on the the MIMIC CXR dataset. Our best performing model was a fine-tuned BERT-to-BERT encoder-decoder with 58.75/100 ROUGE-L F1, which outperformed specialized checkpoints with more sophisticated attention mechanisms. We experimentally demonstrate resonance of first-order vector vortex beams (VVB) with a triangular optical cavity. We also show that, due to their symmetry properties, the so-called radial and azimuthal VVBs do not resonate at the same cavity length, which could be explored to use the triangular resonator as a mode sorter. In addition, an intracavity Pancharatnam phase shifter (PPS) is implemented in order to compensate for any birefringent phase that the cavity mirrors may introduce.
