Perinteisesti kevyen liikenteen väylien liukkauden torjunnassa käytetään hiekoitusta ja polanteen karhennusta. Hiekoituksen suurimpia ongelmia ovat sen aiheuttama pöly sekä materiaalin painuminen polanteeseen lämpimissä sääolosuhteissa. Hiekoitusmateriaalin painuminen polanteeseen aiheuttaa sen, että hiekoitusta voidaan joutua liukkaimpien kelien aikaan tekemään päivittäin. Tästä johtuen pyritään kehittämään vaihtoehtoisia liukkaudentorjuntamenetelmiä, jotka eivät aiheuttaisi pölyhaittoja sekä pitäisivät väylän pidempään hyvässä kunnossa. Yksi tällainen vaihtoehtoinen menetelmä on puulastujen avulla tapahtuva liukkaudentorjunta. Puulastujen toimivuutta kevyen liikenteen väylien liukkauden torjunnassa päätettiinkin tutkia järjestämällä liukkaudentorjuntakokeilu Oulussa talvikaudella 2014–2015. Kokeilua varten tilattiin puulastuista valmistettua Stop Gliss Bio -liukkaudentorjuntamateriaalia, jota käytetään vakituisesti liukkauden torjuntaan La Chaux de Fondsin kaupungissa Sveitsissä. Materiaalin toimivuutta tutkittiin tienkäyttäjäkyselyn, kenttäkäyntien sekä tilaajan ja urakoitsijan tekemien huomioiden avulla. Tienkäyttäjäkyselyyn kerättiin 97 vastausta. Vastauksia kyselyyn kerättiin suoraan kokeiluväylällä liikkuneita ihmisiltä sekä internetissä jaetun kyselyn avulla. Kenttäkäyntejä suoritettiin talven aikana useita ja huomiota kiinnitettiin erityisesti lastujen määrään, lastujen kiinnittymiseen, lastujen tarjoamaan kitkaan, mahdolliseen lastujen lisäämisen tarpeellisuuteen sekä lastujen kulkeutumiseen. Urakoitsijalta sekä tilaajalta kerättiin huomioita ja palautetta kokeilusta sekä sen toimivuudesta. Puulastujen todettiin toimivan parhaiten silloin, kun lämpötila oli nollan alapuolella. Tällöin puulastut kiinnittyivät hyvin polanteeseen ja tarjosivat hyvän kitkan. Huonommin lastujen todettiin toimivan, kun lämpötila oli nollan yläpuolella ja väylät erittäin liukkaita. Lastujen todettiin toimivan hyvin väylän eri kohdissa pois lukien kohdat, joissa autotie kulki lähellä kevyen liikenteen väylää. Tällaisissa kohdissa todettiin lastujen kulkeutuvan väylän reunoille autojen aiheuttaman ilmavirran sekä niiden roiskuttaman veden vaikutuksesta. Tämä aiheutti sen, että lastujen määrä väylän näissä kohdissa ei ollut riittävä. Puulastujen parhaita käyttökohteita nyt tehtyjen tutkimusten pohjalta olisivat erilliset kevyen liikenteen väylät, kävelykadut, jalkakäytävät sekä piha-alueet. Tutkimuksissa menetelmän suurimmaksi eduksi havaittiin se, etteivät puulastut pölisseet yhtä paljon kuin hiekka tai sepeli. Puulastujen etuja ovat myös niiden ekologisuus, miellyttävämpi ja pehmeämpi tuntuma, hyvä pito paljaalla asfaltilla sekä se etteivät ne riko polkupyörän renkaita yhtä helposti kuin sepeli. Menetelmän rajoitteita taas ovat niiden korkea hinta, jäätyminen kylmässä varastossa sekä se, ettei niiden levittäminen ole mahdollista kaikilla levittimillä. Menetelmän rajoitteista suurimmaksi osoittautui puulastumateriaalin hinta, jonka todettiin olevan jopa kahdeksankertainen hiekoitukseen verrattuna. Hiekoituksen ja puulastujen käytön kustannuserojen vertailu on kuitenkin haastavaa, sillä ei tarkalleen tiedetä kuinka paljon materiaalin valmistaminen Suomessa maksaisi. Tulevaisuudessa tutkimus tulisikin kohdistaa siihen, kuinka materiaalia pystyttäisiin valmistamaan Suomessa ja minkälaista materiaalia siihen voitaisiin käyttää. Lisäksi tulisi kiinnittää huomiota lastujen optimaalisen levitysmäärän ja ajonkohdan selvittämiseen sekä tutkia sitä, kuinka kauan materiaali pysyy toimintakykyisenä. Usually the anti-skid treatment of pedestrian and bicycle ways is done with sanding and surface roughening. Biggest problems of sanding are that it makes dust and the material sink in the icy or snowy surface in warmer temperatures. As a result of this the ways need to be re-sanded, sometimes daily, when the weather is slippery. Because of that different methods are developed that don’t make dust and keeps the ways longer in good condition. One such method is the use of wood chips as anti-skid treatment. An experiment of wood chip use as anti-skid treatment was conducted in Oulu in the winter 2014–2015. We ordered Stop Gliss Bio anti-skid treatment material which are regularly used as anti-skid treatment in Switzerland’s La Chaux de Fonds. The functionality of the material was studied trough road user surveys, field studies and observations of the subscriber and contractor. The road user survey got 97 answers. Answers were collected directly from persons using the studied bicycle way and trough an internet survey. Several field studies were made during the winter period in order to examine the amount of material, sticking to the surface, friction, need for material addition and material drifting. Observations from the contractor and subscriber were gathered as well as feedback from the experiment and functionality. The wood ships appeared to function best when the temperature was below zero. At this temperature the wood chips fastened to the surface and gave a good friction. When the temperature was above zero and the roads were slippery the functioning decreased. Findings suggested that the wood chips functioned well on different parts of the road except for those where cars drove nearby. At these parts the wood chips were transported to the side of the road by the airflow produced by the cars. As a result the amount of wood chips was insufficient at these parts. Findings suggest that wood chips functions best at pedestrian and bicycle ways that are apart from other traffic and yard-areas. The benefits of this treatment method were that the wood chips didn’t make dust as much as sand and gravel. Further benefits of the wood chips were ecology, softer and more satisfying feel, good grip on bare asphalt and that wood chips don’t break bicycle tires as easy as gravel. The limitations of the method are high costs, freezing in cold storages and that wood chips can’t be spread with all equipment. The biggest limitation seemed to be the high cost of the wood chips, even eight times as much as the costs for sanding. Since we don’t know how much it would cost to produce the wood chips in Finland, comparing the costs of sanding and wood chips is challenging. In the future studies could focus on how to produce the material in Finland and what kind of material could be used. Also the optimal spreading amount and time could be investigated as well as how long the material stays functional.

Clinical manifestations of gastrointestinal failure were analyzed in 182 newborns – patients of intensive care units. It was established that this syndrome has a direct effect on the development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome which is a universal manifestation of mechanisms of thanatogenesis. Intravitam clinical equivalents of morphological damage to the organs of the gastrointestinal tract in newborn were determined by clinical and morphological comparisons.

Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is a phenomenon implicated in migraine with aura and associated with other neurological disorders (e.g. stroke, brain trauma). Current evidence points to the essential role of NMDA receptors in CSD mechanisms. However, the roles of multiple subunits of NMDA receptors expressed in neurons, glia and blood vessels in vivo, are little explored. Using BOLD fMRI of urethane anesthetized rats as an integrative CSD readout, we tested the involvement of different NMDA receptor subtypes in CSD induction and propagation. Rats were treated with a non-selective NMDA blocker (MK-801), NR2B antagonist (ifenprodil) or a NR2A selective antagonist (TCN-201). CSD was induced during fMRI scanning by application of KCl onto the cerebral cortex and fMRI data were collected by 9.4 T MRI. The non-specific NMDA antagonist MK-801 completely blocked CSD, which was not observed in the NR2A group where TCN-201 did not alter the CSD features. Unexpectedly, the NR2B specific antagonist ifenprodil largely promoted the initial negative phase of the BOLD CSD response, likely due to altered neurovascular coupling. Our data suggest key roles and differential involvement of NMDA receptor subtypes in CSD generation and propagation, highlighting an important role for the NR2B subtype.

The context of the research was a project carried out by preparatory education teachers following a three-phased TriPod-model in their school instruction. The three phases of instruction were: orientation in the classroom, field trip outside school and thirdly, reflection on the acquired experiences back at school. The instruction carried out according to the TriPod model was mainly based on principles of experiential and collaborative learning. Authentic learning environments outside of school were utilized systematically 8–9 times per academic year during the project which lasted three and half years. The main purpose of the research was to study the development of preparatory education teachers’ practical knowledge during the project. Secondly, the aim was to investigate the preparatory education teachers’ views about the suitability of the TriPod model in migrant students’ instruction and integration into their new home country. The epistemological starting point was social constructivism. The methodological approach of the study was qualitative showing features of action research, ethnography and phenomenography. The empirical data consisted mainly of thematic interviews with nine preparatory education teachers and the data was analysed by applying abductive qualitative content analysis. To conclude the results of the study, it can be maintained that the preparatory education teachers created their own “learning environment” where their practical knowledge was developed through individual and collaborative reflection. During the project, didactics for preparatory education was developed with a strong focus on authentic learning environments. Preparatory education teachers found the curriculum supportive in the implementation of the project’s principles and practices, which in turn contributed to the integration of theory and practice. The study also suggests that teachers in school, and the experts outside school in particular should adjust their speech to better suit the students’ level of Finnish language skills. The preparatory education teachers are fully aware of the significance of their role in advancing their students’ integration into society through the means of education. As a further result of the study, an updated model of teachers’ practical theory was constructed; it offers a well-grounded perspective on the educational challenges caused by societal changes which raise the need to re-consider both pre- and in service teacher education. Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksen konteksti on perusopetukseen valmistavan opetuksen projekti, jota opettajat toteuttivat kolmivaiheisen TriPod-mallin mukaisesti. Opetuksen kolme vaihetta olivat luokassa toteutettava orientaatio, opintovierailu koulun ulkopuolelle ja siinä saatujen kokemusten reflektointi koulussa. TriPod-mallin mukainen opetus perustui ensisijaisesti kokemuksellisen ja yhteisöllisen oppimisen periaatteille ja siinä hyödynnettiin systemaattisesti koulun ulkopuolisia autenttisia oppimisympäristöjä 8–9 kertaa lukuvuodessa kolmen ja puolen vuoden aikana. Tutkimukseni tavoitteena oli tutkia valmistavan opetuksen opettajien (valo-opettajien) osaamisen kehittymistä projektin aikana. Toisessa tutkimusongelmassa tutkittiin TriPod-mallin mukaisen opetuksen soveltuvuutta maahanmuuttajataustaisten valo-oppilaiden opetuksessa ja kotoutumisen edistämisessä. Tutkimukseni tietoteoreettisena lähtökohtana on sosiaalinen konstruktivismi. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena, jonka metodologinen viitekehys sisälsi piirteitä toimintatutkimuksesta sekä etnografisesta ja fenomenografisesta tutkimustraditiosta. Tutkimuksen aineisto hankittiin pääosin yhdeksältä valo-opettajalta teemahaastattelun avulla ja analysoitiin abduktiivisen laadullisen sisällönanalyysin avulla. Tutkimuksen perusteella voidaan todeta, että valo-opettajille muodostui oma ”oppimisympäristö”, jossa osaaminen kehittyi sekä subjektiivisen että yhteisöllisen reflektoinnin kautta. Projektin aikana kehitettiin valmistavan opetuksen didaktiikkaa, johon liittyi kiinteästi koulun ulkopuolisten oppimisympäristöjen hyödyntäminen. Valo-opettajat kokivat opetussuunnitelman tukevan projektissa toteutettuja periaatteita ja käytäntöjä, mikä puolestaan vahvisti käytännön ja teorian integroitumista. Tutkimuksessa nousi esille tarve sopeuttaa valo-opettajien ja erityisesti vierailukohteiden asiantuntijoiden opetuspuhetta vastaamaan valo-oppilaiden suomen kielen taitotasoa. Valo-opettajat tiedostivat työnsä yhteiskunnallisen merkityksen kotoutumista edistävien opetuskäytänteiden toteuttajina. Tutkimuksen tuloksena kehitettiin uusi sovellus opettajan käytännön teoriasta; se tarjoaa yhden perustellun näkökulman yhteiskunnallisten muutosten edellyttämiin opetuksellisiin haasteisiin, jotka tulisi ottaa huomioon opettajankoulutuksessa ja opettajien täydennyskoulutuksessa.
