Abstract Background Soil salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses that threatens crop growth. Cotton has some degree of salt tolerance, known as the “pioneer crop” of saline-alkali land. Cultivation of cotton is of great significance to the utilization of saline-alkali land and the development of cotton industry. Gossypium hirsutum and G. barbadense, as two major cotton species, are widely cultivated worldwide. However, until recently, the regulatory mechanisms and specific differences of their responses to salt stress have rarely been reported. Results In this study, we comprehensively compared the differences in the responses of G. hirsutum acc. TM-1 and G. barbadense cv. Hai7124 to salt stress. The results showed that Hai7124 exhibited better growth than did TM-1 under salt stress, with greater PRO content and antioxidant capability, whereas TM-1 only presented greater K+ content. Transcriptome analysis revealed significant molecular differences between the two cotton species in response to salt stress. The key pathways of TM-1 induced by salt are mainly related to growth and development, such as porphyrin metabolism, DNA replication, ribosome and photosynthesis. Conversely, the key pathways of Hai7124, such as plant hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling pathway-plant, and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, are mainly related to plant defense. Further comparative analyses of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) revealed that antioxidant metabolism, abscisic acid (ABA) and jasmonic acid (JA) signalling pathways were more strongly activated in Hai7124, whereas TM-1 was more active in K+ transporter-related genes and ethylene (ETH) signalling pathway. These differences underscore the various molecular strategies adopted by the two cotton species to navigate through salt stress, and Hai7124 responded more strongly to salt stress, which explains the potential reasons for the greater salt tolerance of Hai7124. Finally, we identified 217 potential salt tolerance-related genes, 167 of which overlapped with the confidence intervals of significant SNPs identified in previous genome-wide association studies (GWASs), indicating the high reliability of these genes. Conclusions These findings provide new insights into the differences in the regulatory mechanisms of salt tolerance between G. hirsutum and G. barbadense, and identify key candidate genes for salt tolerance molecular breeding in cotton.

Soil salinity is a major abiotic stressor that hampers agricultural productivity worldwide, with both natural and anthropogenic factors contributing to its rise. Salinity disrupts osmotic and ionic balance, impairs seed germination, hinders photosynthesis, and exacerbates oxidative stress, leading to significant membrane damage. In response, plants have evolved various biochemical and physiological and molecular mechanisms to tolerate high salinity. Recent research has greatly advanced our understanding of salt tolerance by identifying key genes associated with this trait. These studies have highlighted essential genes involved in ion transport, stress signaling, and maintaining osmotic balance. By integrating genetic insights with practical approaches like breeding and genetic engineering, researchers are developing crops better suited to saline environments, which is crucial for addressing global food security challenges. This paper aims to review recent findings on the impact of salt stress on plants and explore the physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms underlying salt tolerance. Crop yield loss due to soil salinization is an increasing threat to agriculture worldwide. Salt stress drastically affects the growth, development, and grain productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.), and the improvement of rice tolerance to salt stress is a desirable approach for meeting increasing food demand. The main contributors to salt toxicity at a global scale are Na+ and Cl− ions, which affect up to 50% of irrigated soils. Plant responses to salt stress occur at the organismic, cellular, and molecular levels and are pleiotropic, involving (1) maintenance of ionic homeostasis, (2) osmotic adjustment, (3) ROS scavenging, and (4) nutritional balance. In this review, we discuss recent research progress on these four aspects of plant physiological response, with particular attention to hormonal and gene expression regulation and salt tolerance signaling pathways in rice. The information summarized here will be useful for accelerating the breeding of salt-tolerant rice.

Mangroves are well-adapted halophytes that thrive in coastal saline environments. They live under difficult environmental conditions, such as high light intensity and external salt concentrations, as well as low-oxygen environments, such as water-logged muck, that are typically inappropriate for the survival of other plants. Salinity is a major abiotic factor that affects plant growth, productivity, and dispersal in tropical and semitropical intertidal areas. Furthermore, it affects approximately 20% of all cultivable land and 50% of all irrigated land on the planet. Mangroves have developed a sophisticated salt filtration mechanism and a complicated root structure to withstand salty water exposure and tidal movement. The expression patterns of five salt tolerance genes (amFer1, amDhna, amSod1, amCat1, and amUbc2) in the Egyptian gray mangrove (Avicennia marina Forssk.) grown under different environmental conditions in South Sinai protectorates (Nabq, Ras Mohamed, Safaga, and Wadi El-Gemal), Egypt, were investigated in this study. This study aimed to assess and examine the genetic behavior of mangroves in response to salinity by using quantitative real-time PCR. Findings revealed differences in the expression patterns of the investigated genes under various conditions, showing that salinity influences plant genetic response. Ferritin gene expression was high in all locations, indicating that ferritin represents an essential component of the mangrove response mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Almost all crops that are important to humans are sensitive to high salt concentration in the soil. The presence of salt in soil is one of the most significant abiotic stresses in farming. Therefore, improving plant salt tolerance and increasing the yield and quality of crops in salty land is vital. Transgenic technology is a fast and effective method to obtain salt-tolerant varieties. At present, many scholars have studied salt damage to plant and plant salt-tolerance mechanism. These scholars have cloned a number of salt-related genes and achieved high salt tolerance for transgenic plants, thereby showing attractive prospects. In this paper, the salt-tolerance mechanism of plants is described from four aspects: plant osmotic stress, ion toxicity, oxidative stress, and salt tolerance genes. This review may help in studies to reveal the mechanism of plant salt tolerance, screen high efficiency and quality salt tolerance crops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dunaliella salina (Dunal), a unicellular green alga which lacks a rigid polysaccharide cell wall, can thrive in hypersaline environments. To better understand its salt tolerance mechanism, we first constructed a high-quality cDNA library with 55 % novel genes for D. salina and then screened this library, isolating 37 unique salt tolerance genes. Eighteen of these newly isolated genes were annotated using the public databases, including a number of conventional salt tolerance genes, such as spermdine synthetase, protein disulfide isomerase, cyclophilin CYP1, F-box protein SKIP5, among others. The other 19 isolated genes were novel salt tolerance genes. Further annotation of these data may help us elucidate the salt tolerance mechanism of Dunaliella salina. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
