While mental disorders have been broadly researched in people with intellectual disabilities (ID), comparatively less attention has been given to the conceptualisation of good mental health for this population. To capture existing concepts, definitions and measurement approaches of good mental health a systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The search was carried out in eleven databases, using various synonyms of (i) intellectual disability, (ii) mental health, (iii) wellbeing, (iv) definition, and (v) assessment. A total of 2,046 datasets were identified, of which 37 met the inclusion criteria and were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and content analysis. Results show four main themes: (1) environment, (2) absence of mental illness, (3) physical health, and (4) psychosocial functioning. The fourth was the most dominant theme and was further divided into five sub-themes: (1) emotionality, (2) interpersonal relations, (3) realise own potential, (4) personal resources, and (5) overall appraisal of life. Our findings reveal different conceptualisations of wellbeing, which is a vital part of good mental health, but highlight a notable research gap in the actual definition and conceptualisation of good mental health for people with ID. Objective: To identify factors associated with receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for serious psychiatric conditions. Methods: Retrospective observational study using hospital administrative data linked with death registrations and outpatient mental health data in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The cohort included patients admitted with a primary psychiatric diagnosis between 2013 and 2022. The outcome measure was receipt of ECT. Results: Of 94,950 patients, 3465 (3.6%) received ECT. The likelihood of receiving ECT was higher in older (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.03), female (HR = 1.24) patients. Compared to depression, patients with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (HR = 0.79), schizophrenia-related disorders (HR = 0.37), mania (HR = 0.64) and other mood disorders (HR = 0.45) had lower odds of receiving ECT. Patients with depression and one other serious psychiatric condition had higher odds of receiving ECT than depression alone. Bipolar disorder likelihood of ECT did not differ from depression. A higher number of mental health outpatient visits in the prior year and an involuntary index admission with depression were also associated with receiving ECT. Likelihood of receiving ECT increased with year of admission (HR = 1.32), private patient status (HR = 2.06), higher socioeconomic status (HR = 1.09) and being married (HR = 1.25). Conclusions: ECT use for depression and bipolar disorder in NSW aligns with clinical national guidelines. Patients with schizophrenia/schizoaffective, schizophrenia-related disorders, mania and other mood disorders had lower likelihood of ECT than depression, despite ECT being recommended by clinical guidelines for these diagnoses. Variations in ECT were strongly associated with healthcare access, with private patients twice as likely to receive ECT than their public counterparts, suggesting a need to explore ECT accessibility. Standard description of local care provision is essential for evidence-informed planning. This study aimed to map and compare the availability and diversity of current mental health service provision for children and adolescents in Australia. We used a standardised service classification instrument, the Description and Evaluation of Services and DirectoriEs (DESDE) tool, to describe service availability in eight urban and two rural health districts in Australia. The pattern of care was compared with that available for other age groups in Australia. Outpatient care was found to be the most common type of service provision, comprising 212 (81.2%) of all services identified. Hospital care (acute and non-acute) was more available in urban than in rural areas (20 services [9.7%] vs 1 [1.8%]). The level of diversity in the types of care available for children and adolescents was lower than that for the general adult population, but slightly higher than that for older people in the same areas. Standardised comparison of the pattern of care across regions reduces ambiguity in service description and classification, enables gap analysis and can inform policy and planning. Background: People with intellectual developmental disorders have significant health disparities and a lack of proper attention to their health needs. They have been underrepresented in scientific research, and very few studies have been carried out using a representative randomized sample. The aim of this study was to describe the methods used in the POMONA-ESP project to recruit a representative and randomized sample of participants with intellectual developmental disorders. Methods: The POMONA-ESP project is an observational cross-sectional study. It aims to explore the health status of people with intellectual developmental disorders across Spain and the use they make of health services. Results and conclusions: The results of the POMONA-ESP project may have a major impact on people with intellectual developmental disorders and society in general. It is the first study to obtain geographically representative epidemiological data from a large sample, information that is fundamental to improving care and healthcare planning for people with intellectual developmental disorders.

Background: The aim of this paper was to summarize the main results of the POMONA-ESP project, the first study to explore health status in a large representative, randomized and stratified sample of people with intellectual developmental disorders in Spain. Methods: The POMONA-ESP project collected information about the health of 953 individuals with intellectual developmental disorders. Results: Diseases such as urinary incontinence, oral problems, epilepsy, constipation or obesity were highly prevalent among the participants; with gender-differentiated prevalences for certain conditions, and age and intellectual disability level as risk factors for disease. Overmedication was common in the sample, and drugs were often prescribed without any clinical indication or follow-up. The present authors also found a lack of important relevant information about the participant's health and a lack of adequate genetic counselling. Conclusions: Our findings may contribute to a better understanding of health status and needs of people with intellectual developmental disorders and suggest several courses of action to improve their health care.

Background: Persons with intellectual disability (ID) face significant health challenges. Nurses provide health care to this population in many settings, including general practice, community care, acute care, reproductive health, and palliative care. However, since the demise of the specialist training model in the 1990s, the extent to which general nurses in Australia are educated about the health needs of people with ID is unclear. Methods: A systematic literature mapping and documentary analysis of educational resources available to nurses in Australia was undertaken, with particular reference to New South Wales and Tasmania. Results: Minimal education content relating to the health needs of people with ID was found in the academic programs included in this study. Where it existed, it was inconsistently applied, being made available as an aspect of professional development rather than a clearly identified educational pathway. Conclusions: This study adds to previous findings indicating the need for change to nurse education in this area, and for cross-country comparisons with other models of nurse education in the area.

This paper investigates the role of caregiver mental health and parenting practices as predictors of attachment in children with intellectual disability/developmental delay, comparing between children with ASD (n = 29) and children with other developmental disabilities (n = 20). Parents reported that children with ASD had high levels of anxiety and stress, and attachment insecurity in children (less closeness and more conflict in attachment relationships, and more inhibited attachment behaviours) compared with children with other developmental disabilities. Children's attachment quality was associated with parenting practices and the presence of an ASD diagnosis. These results highlight the bidirectional nature of the quality of caregiving environments and attachment in children with ASD, and also provide a strong rationale for targeting children's attachment quality in early interventions. Strategies for the early detection of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in people with intellectual developmental disorder (IDD) are urgently needed, but few specific tools have been developed. The present study examines the psychometric properties of the EVTEA-DI, a Spanish adaptation of the PDD-MRS, in a large randomized sample of 979 adults with IDD. Factorial solution analysis suggested a three-factor solution (stereotyped behavior, communication, and social behavior). The EVTEA-DI showed good reliability and convergent validity when compared to the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Discriminative validity analysis resulted in an acceptable global sensitivity of 70% and a high specificity of 90%. The EVTEA-DI proved to be a valid screening tool in ASD assessment of the adult Spanish population with IDD.

Rural communities have unique mental health needs and challenges which are often related to the uniqueness of the community itself. On a per‐capita basis, the investment in rural mental health research is far less than that in urban communities. Added to this, rural communities are often at risk of researchers, based in large urban universities, visiting, conducting the research with minimal engagement with local stakeholders and limited understanding of the community's social‐service‐environmental context. Often this research leaves no visible benefit to the community with respect to increased knowledge, resources or community capacity. This commentary is based on the insights of a panel of authors from 9 countries, each with extensive experience of rural mental health research and work. And it seeks to stimulate the discourse on responsible rural mental health practice. The aim of this commentary is to provide a reference on research practice for novice and experienced researchers on rural mental health research and practice, to assist policymakers, government and funding bodies to establish appropriate standards and guidelines for rural mental health research, and support rural communities to advocate for equity of funding and sustainable research as they engage with researchers, funders and governments. The 10 standards in this declaration will help guide researchers toward research that is beneficial to rural communities and also help develop the local community's research capability, which ultimately will serve to enhance the mental health and well‐being of rural communities.
