Cities are gaining prominence committing to respond to the threat of climate change, e.g., by developing local climate plans or strategies. However, little is known regarding the approaches and processes of plan development and implementation, or the success and effectiveness of proposed measures. Mainstreaming is regarded as one approach associated with (implementation) success, but the extent of integration of local climate policies and plans in ongoing sectoral and/or development planning is unclear. This paper analyses 885 cities across the 28 European countries to create a first reference baseline on the degree of climate mainstreaming in local climate plans. This will help to compare the benefits of mainstreaming versus dedicated climate plans, looking at policy effectiveness and ultimately delivery of much needed climate change efforts at the city level. All core cities of the European Urban Audit sample were analyzed, and their local climate plans classified as dedicated or mainstreamed in other local policy initiatives. It was found that the degree of mainstreaming is low for mitigation (9% of reviewed cities; 12% of the identified plans) and somewhat higher for adaptation (10% of cities; 29% of plans). In particular horizontal mainstreaming is a major effort for local authorities; an effort that does not necessarily pay off in terms of success of action implementation. This study concludes that climate change issues in local municipalities are best tackled by either, developing a dedicated local climate plan in parallel to a mainstreamed plan or by subsequently developing first the dedicated and later a mainstreaming plan (joint or subsequent "dual track approach"). Cities that currently provide dedicated local climate plans (66% of cities for mitigation; 26% of cities for adaptation) may follow-up with a mainstreaming approach. This promises effective implementation of tangible climate actions as well as subsequent diffusion of climate issues into other local sector policies. In regions of strong Land-Atmosphere (L-A) interaction, soil moisture (SM) conditions can impact the atmosphere through modulating the land surface fluxes. The importance of the identification of L-A interaction regions lies in the potential improvement of the weather/seasonal forecast and the better understanding of the physical mechanisms involved. This study aims to compare the terrestrial segment of the L-A interaction from satellite products and climate models, motivated by previous modeling studies pointing out southeastern South America (SESA) as a L-A hotspot during austral summer. In addition, the L-A interaction under dry or wet anomalous conditions over SESA is analyzed. To identify L-A hotspots the AMSRE-LPRM SM and MODIS land surface temperature products; coupled climate models and uncoupled land surface models were used. SESA highlights as a strong L-A interaction hotspot when employing different metrics, temporal scales and independent datasets, showing consistency between models and satellite estimations. Both AMSRE-LPRM bands (X and C) are consistent showing a strong L-A interaction hotspot over the Pampas ecoregion. Intensification and a larger spatial extent of the L-A interaction for dry summers was observed in both satellite products and models compared to wet summers. These results, which were derived from measured physical variables, are encouraging and promising for future studies analyzing L-A interactions. L-A interaction analysis is proposed here as a meeting point between remote sensing and climate modelling communities of Argentina, within a region with the highest agricultural and livestock production of the continent, but with an important lack of in-situ SM observations. PolyEtherEtherKetone (PEEK) is an advanced high-performance thermoplastic polymer, and its composites are used extensively in the aeronautical industry. This paper presents an experimental approach to determine the role of sandblasting treatment on surface morphology modifications of PEEK and its composites, with the aim of developing a topographic characterization in order to propose pertinent parameters that correlate with contact angles from wettability measurement. Sandblasting (fine abrasive particle projection) was selected as the surface treatment, in order to obtain various morphologically quasi-isotropic surfaces. Two surface metrological approaches to topographical characterization were used to correlate the wettability behavior with the surface roughness parameters, the first based on 2D profile analysis and the second on 3D topography analysis. Two different unreinforced grades of PEEK and four composites: discontinuous carbon fiber or glass fiber-reinforced, oriented, and unoriented, were studied. The experimental results indicated the sandblasting process duration necessary to reach a morphological steady state. It was stated that one of the pertinent parameters is the mean slope of roughness motif in 2D profile characterization, as confirmed by previous findings for anisotropic morphologies. However, for all cases, a new topographic parameter Sr, combining the surface amplitude and the summit density distribution, is proposed as a factor well-correlated with wettability characteristics. This study compares the mechanical, tribological, and dielectric properties of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy (GFRE), presenting various fiber/matrix adhesions. Three GFRE composites were studied. The only difference between them is in the initial preparation of fibers which is intentionally simplified compared to the complex sizings used in industry. Thus, fibers treated with aminosilane or silicone coupling agents were compared with fibers simply washed with deionized water.The dielectric measurements show the leading role of interfacial bonding in the trapping or diffusion of electric charges. To obtain high mechanical properties, a fiber treatment that contributes to the diffusion of electric charges along the fiber/matrix interface is preferred. In addition, after friction, a modification of the dielectric properties in all materials is observed, and the trapping or the diffusion of the charges along the interfaces can make it possible to lower the friction coefficient, or the wear. Abstract: Cracking and wear induced by fretting is a critical problem for industrial composite structures. Thermosetting bismaleimide resin is a promising material due to its good mechanical and thermal properties. The effect of temperature regarding fretting cracking and fretting wear is presently investigated. The temperature effect on crack initiation and propagation is quantified combining experiments and modelling. The fretting wear is explained using a friction energy wear approach. A bilinear evolution of wear volume versus the dissipated energy is identified and related to a protective third body layer. Abstract: This paper presents the results obtained after studying the relation between the statistical parameters that describe the backscattering distribution of junco marshes and their biophysical variables. The results are based on the texture analysis of a time series of Envisat ASAR C-band data (APP mode, V V +HH polarizations) acquired between October 2003 and January 2005 over the Lower Paraná River Delta, Argentina. The image power distributions were analyzed, and we show that the distribution provides a good fitting of SAR data extracted from wetland observations for both polarizations. We also show that the estimated values of the order parameter of the distribution can be explained using fieldwork and reasonable assumptions. In order to explore these results, we introduce a radiative transfer based interaction model to simulate the junco marsh distribution. After analyzing model simulations, we found evidence that the order parameter is related to the junco plant density distribution inside the junco marsh patch. It is concluded that the order parameter of the distribution could be a useful parameter to estimate the junco plant density. This result is important for basin hydrodynamic modeling, since marsh plant density is the most important parameter to estimate marsh water conductance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper focuses on the use of radar remote sensing for water storage estimation in wetland marshes of the Paraná River Delta in Argentina. The approach followed is based on the analysis of a temporal set of ENVISAT ASAR data which includes images acquired under different polarizations and incidence angles as well as different environmental conditions (water level, precipitation, and vegetation condition). Two marsh species, named junco and cortadera, were monitored. This overall data set gave us the possibility of studying and understanding the basic interactions between the radar, the soil under different flood conditions, and the vegetation structure. The comprehension of the observed features was addressed through electromagnetic models developed for these ecosystems. The procedure used in this work to estimate water level within marshes combines a direct electromagnetic model, field work data specifically obtained to feed the model, the actual ASAR measurements and a well known retrieval scheme based on a cost function. Results are validated with water level evaluations at specific points. A map showing an estimation of the water storage capacity and its error in junco and cortadera areas for the date where the investigation was done is also presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study focuses on the electric charge motion in unsatured polyester and epoxy composites reinforced by natural fibres of Alfa type, treated by different coupling agents. The electric charging phenomenon is studied by scanning electron microscopy mirror effect (SEMME) coupled with the induced current method (ICM). Previously, using the same approach, glass fibre reinforced epoxy (GFRE) was studied to correlate mechanical [B. Kchaou, C. Turki, M. Salvia, Z. Fakhfakh, D. Tréheux, Composites Science and Technology 64 (2004) 1467], or tribological [B. Kchaou, C. Turki, M. Salvia, Z. Fakhfakh, D. Tréheux, Dielectric and friction behaviour of unidirectionalglass fibre reinforced epoxy (GFRE), Wear, 265 (2008) 763.] properties and dielectric properties. It was shown that the dielectric properties of the fibre–matrix interfaces play a significant role in the optimization of the composite. This result seems to be the same for natural fibre composites: the fibre–matrix interfaces allow a diffusion of the electric charges which can delocalize the polarization energy and consequently delay the damage of the composite. However, a non-suited sizing can lead to a new trapping of electric charges along these same interfaces with, as a consequence, a localization of the polarisation energy. The optimum composite is obtained for one sizing which helps, at the same time, to have a strong fibre–matrix adhesion and an easy flow of the electric charges along the interface. Abstract: Molecular motions and thermal transitions in polyaniline fibers (∅=50 μm), cast from emeraldine base powder dissolved in N,N′-dimethylpropylene urea (DMPU), have been investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). For this purpose, a special picopendulum has been used, and a double sweep DMTA study has been performed. Approaching the national Kyoto Protocol (KP) targets involves a re-definition of the actual configuration of local energy systems. This study deals with a local scale application of the IEA-MARKAL models generator, in which the anthropogenic system of Basilicata Region (Southern Italy) is investigated to support the definition of coherent long-term strategies and sound climate protection policies. A scenario by scenario analysis points out the behaviour of the optimal mix of fuels and technologies in the presence of carbon dioxide emissions constraints. Trade off curves and reduced costs analyses outline the most effective actions for contributing to the national KP targets, with particular emphasis on the interventions in Civil (Residential, Commercial & Services) and waste management sectors. Summary 1 Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a condition that involves proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukins 1β and 6 (ILs). In this disease, it has been shown that an abnormal microcirculatory system is implicated. 2 Therefore, the effects of in vivo treatment for three days with interleukins 1β and 6 were investigated on rat isolated mesenteric vascular bed (MVB). 3 A significant concentration-dependent increase in vascular response to noradrenaline (NA) was found, with a significant difference in E[sub max] between control (93.01 ± 16.78 mmHg) and treated preparations (137.91 ± 5.20 mmHg). Endothelin-1(ET-1) induced a significantly greater increase of perfusion pressure in treated rats in comparison with control rats at the highest concentration used (0.1 μ m). 4 The concentration-dependent decrease of perfusion pressure induced by acetylcholine (ACh) in MVB precontracted with NA was significantly reduced in specimens from treated rats in comparison with control rats, with a significant difference in E[sub max] between control and treated preparations. 5 Perivascular nerve stimulation (PNS) evoked contractions with no difference between treatments. Similarly, no difference in relaxant effect was found after PNS in specimens precontracted with NA, in the presence of guanethidine. 6 These findings indicate that the precocious inflammation acts only at postsynaptic level, facilitating vascular contraction. These data seem to support the hypothesis that vascular dysfunction caused by overproduction of ILs may contribute, among other immunological factors, to vasculitis in IBD that leads to intestinal ischaemia through vasoconstriction. The study of the spatio-temporal dynamics of surface soil moisture (SSM) drydowns integrates the soil response to climatic conditions, drainage and land cover and is key to advances in our knowledge of the soil–atmosphere water exchange. SSM drydowns have also been employed to compare soil moisture spatio-temporal behaviour between different data sources such as satellite-derived data and land–surface models, difficult to compare with standard methodologies. However, the errors introduced by satellite effective sampling frequencies (SF) and by different methodologies employed to define a drydown period have until now not been properly addressed in the literature. Here, SSM from microwave remote sensing products operating at L, C and X frequency bands are analysed together with SSM from a land–surface model in southeastern South America during 2010–2014, at seasonal and annual scales. We use an SSM-based drydown detection methodology and an exponential model to estimate the drydown time scale. The errors generated by the SF and by using SSM instead of precipitation to define the start of the drydown period are examined using a synthetic soil moisture model. Most of the products can detect the negative correlation between aridity conditions and drydown time scales (faster soil drying in the semiarid west and slower – and noisier – towards the wetter east). The Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) L-band product reproduces the smoothest drydown time scale spatial patterns at the annual and seasonal scales and displays large seasonal contrasts, although its error due to SF is the highest among the three products. The Organizing Carbon Hydrology In Dynamic Ecosystems (ORCHIDEE) land–surface model resampled by the SF of each product shows better agreement with SMOS, followed by the X-band product. The agreement is higher over the southern Pampas Plains, a region with high coverage of satellite-derived data and flat topography. SSM observational errors generate higher relative uncertainties for drydown time scales longer than 8 days, while the SF is more relevant for shorter drydowns. Also, the SF has a larger impact than soil depth, particularly in the dry season, when sparse temporal coverage misses short drydowns. Soil texture influence is captured by SMOS and ORCHIDEE, revealing slower drydowns for finer textures at the annual scale. Our results show that the soil drying behaviour is comparable between microwave remote sensing products and a land–surface model and that the observational errors and the SF are important sources of uncertainty to consider when interpreting drydown results. Dry fretting wear tests were performed on a semicrystalline polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE cylinder rubbing on a flat Ti-6Al-4V surface at room temperature. Various sliding speeds and normal loads were imposed for test durations from 5×10 4 to 10 6 cycles. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate how sliding speed and normal load influence friction and wear rate evolution for gross slip fretting-reciprocating sliding conditions. Analysis confirmed an initial transient regime related to the progressive formation of a PTFE transfer film on the titanium counterface, followed by a linear steady-state wear regime. Focusing on the steady-state wear regime, a rising staircase evolution versus sliding speed was observed for both friction and Archard's wear rate. This continuous “sigmoid” wear rate evolution was related to friction heating, inducing transition from micro to macro surface-ploughing wear damage. In addition, a discontinuous cracking wear component was observed from a threshold sliding speed ( v th =12 mm/s), due to friction-induced thermal activation of the crystalline phase transition then the principal transition (associated with the glass transition) of the PTFE polymer. The analysis also showed that an increase in normal load induced a parallel reduction in the coefficient of friction and parallel increase in wear rate. These parallel evolutions suggest no direct interaction between sliding speed and normal force. Hence the normal force effect can be analyzed using a ( P / P ref ) n weight function, where the n exponent quantifies the relative effect of normal load versus friction and PTFE wear rate. These results, which are discussed regarding former research works of Tanaka, are correlated with PTFE thermo-mechanical response, friction thermal considerations and competition between several wear processes. Finally, global wear rate could be formulated, including sigmoid (ploughing wear), bell shape (cracking wear) and weighted (normal force effect) functions. In this work, laser parameters initiating the emergence of periodic structures, so-called ripples on poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) surfaces, are investigated. PEEK was used in its semi-crystalline and amorphous forms. Polymer surfaces were treated locally by performing a matrix of laser impacts to highlight the influence of the crystallinity in ultrashort laser interaction. Different surface morphologies or ripples were analyzed by atomic force microscopy and optical interferometry. A map of the presence of these different morphologies according to the laser fluence and the number of pulses was established. Analysis by optical interferometry was carried out and led to the calculations of ablation efficiency. Some significant differences were demonstrated between amorphous and semi-crystalline surfaces. This work revealed topographical information on the local behavior of the irradiated material. Finally, the crystallinity rate of polymer surface seems to be a determinant factor for the periodic nanostructured appearance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this work was to monitor and model land surface phenology over the past ten years in the South American Bermejo River basin using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) product. In order to do this, we evaluated the characteristics of the satellite data and information available on the study area's ecosystem to choose the best model to capture the temporal dynamics of NDVI in local vegetation (sufficiently complex to provide a good fit and simple enough so that each parameter has an immediate ecological meaning). An ecological interpretation of model parameters was provided. Different land surfaces showed distinct fluctuations over time in NDVI values, and this information was used to improve object-oriented classification. A decision tree classification was developed to identify spatial patterns of NDVI functional form and the fluctuations that these patterns presented from 2000 to 2010. We integrated inter-annual information in a final map that distinguishes stable areas from changing sites. Assuming that large inter-annual spatial-scale fluctuations were related to climatic events, we established how vegetated land surfaces within the study area responded to these. Recycling waste tires being important for both economical and environmental reasons, ground tire rubber can be blended with other polymers, modifying their properties. In order to characterize and explain these modifications, an experimental study was carried out concerning the improvement in the dynamic damping properties when adding recycled ground tire rubber (GTR) fillers to an elastomeric matrix (ethylene vinyl acetate, EVA).To evaluate the influence of both the GTR and the porosity in a GTR/ EVA composite, three samples have been elaborated by injection:the EVA matrix alone, a GTR/EVA composite, and a GTR/EVA porous composite. Dynamic measurements of the samples were performed using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The Young’s modulus and loss factor of these materials are estimated using the frequency—temperature equivalence introduced by Williams—Landel—Ferry expanding the measurement of the dynamic properties over a wider range of frequencies. This method showed that in low-frequency bandwidth, the loss factor has been improved by the addition of GTR to the EVA matrix. The α-relaxation study showed lower activation energy for both the GTR-filled composites leading to the conclusion that the mobility of the polymer chains has been improved by addition of GTR. The impact behavior study carried out using a weight drop test experiment also concluded to better impact energy absorption for the GTR-filled composites at the expense of a larger maximum displacement. Abstract: An original indirect method of elastic modulus measurement based on fretting tests is developed here. It consists in applying a normal force, then marking the contact area thanks to a tiny cyclic fretting loading. The elastic modulus of the epoxy resin is extrapolated from the post-mortem contact radius measurement using a Hertzian contact description. Applied to a RTM6 epoxy resin, the elastic properties are extracted from this partial slip fretting analysis and are compared to dynamic mechanical analysis data (DMA). Very good agreement was found between these fretting results and data given by DMA analysis, confirming the potential of this new contact method to extract the mechanical properties of materials. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to confirm the role of the electric charges on the friction behaviour of non-conductive materials. This correlation is proven using tribo-tests and SEMME (Scanning Electron Microscope Mirror Effect) measurements carried out on the neat epoxy matrix and on two GFRE composites, which only differ by the sizing of the fibres. For the matrix, the influence of friction is only obvious inside the friction track but, for the composites, a modification of the properties of the whole composite (inside and outside the friction track) is observed after friction. Consequently, the glass fibre/matrix interfaces play the role of diffusion path and, then, allow the trapping of electric charges, inducing the formation of defects, as proved by the dielectric modification of material, outside the friction track. In addition, it will be noted that a diffusion of electric charges through the fibre–matrix interfaces permits a stabilization of the friction coefficient and a limitation of the wear, whereas a localised trapping of charges on the interfaces is a source of damage and wear. In this way, the choice of the sizing process permits to control the motion of the electric charges and, consequently, to optimize the mechanical and tribological properties of the composites. Indomethacin-induced enteritis is a model of inflammatory bowel disease.To further characterize this model, rats received two injections of indomethacin (7·5 mg kg−1) 24 h apart and histological damage of intestinal mucosa, oxidative stress, alterations of intestinal motility and mesenteric vascular bed (MVB) reactivity were investigated after 5 days.The results show that indomethacin caused several histological and functional changes at the ileal level. In particular, response to carbachol as well as the nonadrenergic-noncholinergic inhibitory response to electrical field stimulation (EFS) was lower in the treated than control rats. Moreover, nitric oxide (NO)-component of the inhibitory response was higher in the treated than control rats. Mesenteric vessels preparations from the treated rats showed increased noradrenaline (NA)-induced perfusion pressure, whereas relaxant responses to acetylcholine, although not significantly reduced in the treated rats, had a higher nitrergic component. This finding suggests that vascular dysfunction may contribute to chronic inflammation. The aim of this paper is to show the influence of fibres and fibre orientation on dielectric behaviour of glass fibre reinforced polymer. The Scanning Electron Microscope Mirror Effect (SEMME) associated with the Ground Current measurement were used to determine the ability of trapping and motion of electric charges inside insulating materials. The role of the fibre/matrix interface nature seems to be essential for either trapping or diffusion of charges and consequently for localisation or spreading of stored polarisation energy which can induce, from the mechanical point of view, brittleness of interface. Abstract Background In rodents, interleukins administration induces intestinal changes similar to those found in inflammatory bowel disease. We investigated the effects of in vivo subchronic treatment with IL-1 beta and IL-6 on rat colonic mucosa and circular smooth muscle. Materials and method We evaluated transmucosal electrical parameters (Ussing chambers) and early changes of in vitro direct contractility induced by carbachol and tachykinins. Alterations in excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission were studied with electrical field stimulation (EFS). Results Treatment with interleukins induces inflammation proved by fever, early signs of colonic histological damage and changes in mucosal ion transport. Concentration response-curve to carbachol was significantly lower in treated rats (P < 0·02) with significant difference in Emax between control (1·67 ± 0·17 g) and treated preparations (1·20 ± 0·13 g) (P < 0·05). Concentration response-curve to NK2 agonist was significantly lower in the treated rats (P < 0·005) with a significant difference in Emax between the control (0·26 ± 0·04 g) and treated preparations (0·12 ± 0·02 g) (P < 0·02). None of the drugs used induces changes in EC50 . The contractile reflex response to electrically induced distension was significantly higher in the treated rats and more reduced after administration of atropine. Adding NK2 receptor antagonist resulted in a further reduction being observed in the treated and control rats (P = NS). Relaxation by EFS on cholinergic tone was not different between treatments, although pretreatment with L-NNA resulted in greater relaxation in the treated (-21·7%) than in the control rats (-14·8%). Three integral-based finite strain viscoelastic models under the assumption of time-strain separability have been investigated within this work. To this end, experimental investigation has been conducted on a carbon black filled rubber, a mixture of natural rubber and bromobutyl. The monotonic tests were performed to capture the long-term response of the material. Relaxation tests were intented to identify the time-dependent material properties, and completed with a dynamic mechanical analysis. Models under consideration are Christensen, Fosdick and Yu and Simo model implemented in the finite element solver Abaqus. Under the assumption of an homegeneous incompressible material with a Mooney-Rivlin elastic potential, the response of the three models is compared for uniaxial tension and simple shear motions in time and frequency domains with respect to strain-rate, frequency and static predeformation dependencies. The equilibrium and non-equilibrium stress is predicted in a limited range mainly related to the choice and identification of the hyperelastic model. For stress relaxation, the long-term response is asymptotically reached with good accuracy, while the hysteritic response is mainly overestimated for Christensen model, and better approximated for both Fosdick and Yu and Simo models. In the frequency domain, Fosdick and Yu model shows no dependence on the predeformation. Christensenmodel is likely adapted to unfilled rubbers, and is unable to predict the softening effect due to the static predeformation effect. Mass reduction of automotive components enhances vehicles' performance and extends their driving range. However, lightweight construction typically leads to noise and vibration issues. Hence, the development of lightweight components must go in tandem with advancements in the field of noise and vibration. This work focuses on the lightweighting of the gearbox housings (GBHs) and on the introduction of vibroacoustic metamaterials to improve their Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) characteristics. Topology optimization methods were used to reduce the mass of a GBH. Its noise emission was evaluated numerically, before and after the mass reduction. Locally resonant metamaterial (LRM) solutions were applied in the GBH and then tested in numerical simulations. This analysis showed the LRM solutions reduce the emission of noise in the predicted band gaps (BGs), while also providing significant attenuation across the entire frequency spectrum under consideration. The experimental results confirmed the effectiveness of the LRM attenuation concept and the trends observed in the numerical results. Vibration was also attenuated in parts of the GBH where the LRM was not applied. Attenuation of in-plane housing vibration was also observed. Globally, efforts are underway to reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to climate change impacts at the local level. However, there is a poor understanding of the relationship between city strategies on climate change mitigation and adaptation and the relevant policies at national and European level. This paper describes a comparative study and evaluation of cross-national policy. It reports the findings of studying the climate change strategies or plans from 200 European cities from Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. The study highlights the shared responsibility of global, European, national, regional and city policies. An interpretation and illustration of the influences from international and national networks and policy makers in stimulating the development of local strategies and actions is proposed. It was found that there is no archetypical way of planning for climate change, and multiple interests and motivations are inevitable. Our research warrants the need for a multi-scale approach to climate policy in the future, mainly ensuring sufficient capacity and resource to enable local authorities to plan and respond to their specific climate change agenda for maximising the management potentials for translating environmental challenges into opportunities. Urban areas are pivotal to global adaptation and mitigation efforts. But how do cities actually perform in terms of climate change response? This study sheds light on the state of urban climate change adaptation and mitigation planning across Europe. Europe is an excellent test case given its advanced environmental policies and high urbanization. We performed a detailed analysis of 200 large and medium-sized cities across 11 European countries and analysed the cities' climate change adaptation and mitigation plans. We investigate the regional distribution of plans, adaptation and mitigation foci and the extent to which planned greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions contribute to national and international climate objectives. To our knowledge, it is the first study of its kind as it does not rely on self-assessment (questionnaires or social surveys). Our results show that 35 % of European cities studied have no dedicated mitigation plan and 72 % have no adaptation plan. No city has an adaptation plan without a mitigation plan. One quarter of the cities have both an adaptation and a mitigation plan and set quantitative GHG reduction targets, but those vary extensively in scope and ambition. Furthermore, we show that if the planned actions within cities are nationally representative the 11 countries investigated would achieve a 37 % reduction in GHG emissions by 2050, translating into a 27 % reduction in GHG emissions for the EU as a whole. However, the actions would often be insufficient to reach national targets and fall short of the 80 % reduction in GHG emissions recommended to avoid global mean temperature rising by 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. The purpose of this study was to describe the variation in listeriosis infection incidence during pregnancy over a 25-year period based on salient clinical and laboratory features compiled in a tertiary referral hospital and to depict the clinical characteristics of these cases. A cohort was created of all cases of listeriosis in pregnant women or their neonates (early-onset form) diagnosed between 1985 and 2010. Forty-three cases of perinatal listeriosis were diagnosed among the 82,320 hospitalised pregnant women (incidence 0.5‰). Whereas the incidence remained almost constant at 0.24‰ until 2000, an increasing incidence was observed from then on, reaching 0.86‰ during the last years of the study period. A four-fold increase in listeriosis rate during pregnancy has occurred in recent years, with poorer outcome for those cases occurring before 28 weeks and for those in which early antibiotic treatment was not provided. Background Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) including rosiglitazone (ROSI) are insulin sensitizing agents with beneficial gastrointestinal effects. However, no studies are available on TZDs effect in gastrointestinal motility. We evaluated the effects of ROSI on gastrointestinal inhibitory neurotransmission focusing on the modulatory roles of nitric oxide synthase/nitric oxide (NOS/NO) and heme oxygenase/carbon monoxide (HO/CO) pathways. Methods Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were used as model of insulin resistance. Duodenal strips were obtained from vehicle-treated SHR, ROSI-treated SHR (5 mg kg−1 by gavage daily per 6 weeks), and Wistar Kyoto (WKY). Inhibitory responses to electrical field stimulation (EFS) were evaluated in the presence of HO inhibitor zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPPIX, 10 μmol L−1) or NOS inhibitor NG-nitro- l-arginine (L-NNA, 100 μmol L−1), alone and in combination. Protein levels of HO and NOS isoforms were evaluated by immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis. Key Results Basal responses to EFS were significantly increased in duodenum strips from vehicle-treated SHR vs WKY. This effect was reversed in ROSI-treated SHR. The EFS-mediated relaxation was comparably reduced by ZnPPIX in WKY and SHR, but not in ROSI-treated SHR animals. The L-NNA reduced EFS response to a similar extent in WKY and ROSI -treated SHR, but its effect was significantly higher in vehicle-treated SHR. Expression of HO-1 protein was significantly lower, whereas HO-2 protein levels were unchanged in ROSI-treated SHR with respect to vehicle-treated SHR. Finally, increased levels of nNOS in vehicle-treated SHR were reduced in ROSI-treated SHR. Abstract: This work is aimed to illustrate the potentiality of the multi-region NEEDS-TIMES modelling platform, in the economic evaluation of the environmental damages due to air pollution. In particular the effects of external costs on the least-cost optimised energy system configuration were analysed in a national case study with the NEEDS-TIMES Italy model, considering the externalities related to local and global air pollutants (NO x , SO2, VOC, particulates and GHGs). Different scenarios were compared to emphasise the role of external costs in the achievement of strategic environmental targets. The main results obtained are discussed, focusing on the changes in energy fuel mix as well as in local air pollutants and GHG emissions, highlighting the main conclusions in terms of policy strategies. Abstract: The implementation of resource management strategies aimed at reducing the impacts of the anthropogenic activities system requires a comprehensive approach to evaluate on the whole the environmental burdens of productive processes and to identify the best recovery strategies from both an environmental and an economic point of view. In this framework, an analytical methodology based on the integration of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), ExternE and Comprehensive Analysis was developed to perform an in-depth investigation of energy systems. The LCA methodology, largely utilised by the international scientific community for the assessment of the environmental performances of technologies, combined with Comprehensive Analysis allows modelling the overall system of anthropogenic activities, as well as sub-systems, the economic consequences of the whole set of environmental damages. Moreover, internalising external costs into partial equilibrium models, as those utilised by Comprehensive Analysis, can be useful to identify the best paths for implementing technology innovation and strategies aimed to a more sustainable energy supply and use. This paper presents an integrated application of these three methodologies to a local scale case study (the Val D’Agri area in Basilicata, Southern Italy), aimed to better characterise the environmental impacts of the energy system, with particular reference to extraction activities. The innovative methodological approach utilised takes advantage from the strength points of each methodology with an added value coming from their integration as emphasised by the main results obtained by the scenario analysis. Abstract: Sustainability of energy systems has a strategic role in the current energy-environmental policies as it involves key issues such as security of energy supply, mitigation of environmental impact (with special regard to air quality improvement) and energy affordability. In this framework modelling activities are more than ever a strategic issue in order to manage the large complexity of energy systems as well as to support the decision-making process at different stages and spatial scales (regional, national, Pan-European, etc.). The aim of this article is to present a new model for the Italian energy system implemented with a common effort in the framework of an integrated project under the Sixth Framework Programme. In particular, the main features of the common methodology are briefly recalled and the modelling structure, the main data and assumptions, sector by sector, are presented. Alterations in gastrointestinal motility of diabetic patients have been linked to degenerative changes induced by glucose abnormalities in the peripheral nervous system. The heme oxygenase/carbon monoxide (HO/CO) signalling represents one of the non-adrenergic/non-cholinergic (NANC) neurotransmission pathways involved in regulation of physiological peristalsis. To investigate the role of HO/CO system in intestinal motility under diabetic conditions, the response to electrical field stimulation (EFS) and western blot analysis of HO/CO pathway components were studied on duodenum longitudinal smooth muscle strips isolated from streptozotocin (STZ)-treated diabetic rats (65 mg kg−1, i.p.) and respective controls (CTRL), 6 weeks after the onset of diabetes. When compared to CTRL, the ability of CO releasing molecule (CORM-3) (100–400 μmol L−1) to enhance NANC relaxation was significantly impaired in STZ-treated rats ( P < 0.05). Conversely, in vitro incubation with the HO inhibitor ZnPPIX (10 μmol L−1, 60 min) significantly reduced EFS-induced relaxation in CTRL ( P < 0.05), but not in STZ-treated rats. Interestingly, the ability of ZnPPIX to inhibit EFS-induced relaxation was partially restored in STZ-treated rats co-administered in vivo with the HO-1 inducer cobalt protoporphyrin IX (CoPPIX) (0.5 mg per 100 g body weight weekly). Expression of inducible HO-1 protein was increased in homogenates from STZ-treated rats ( vs CTRL, P < 0.01), and further increased in STZ-treated rats receiving CoPPIX ( P < 0.05). Taken together, our data underline the essential role of HO/CO system in regulation of inhibitory NANC neurotransmission in the duodenum and suggest that dysregulation of HO/CO activity may represent one mechanism by which gastrointestinal motility is altered in diabetes. Wetlands are areas where the presence of water at or near the soil surface drives the natural system. Imaging radars (SARs) have distinct characteristics which make them of significant value for monitoring and mapping wetland inundation dynamics. The presence or absence of water (which has a much higher dielectric constant than dry or wet soil) in wetlands may significantly alter the signal detected from these areas depending on the dominant vegetation type, density, and height. The objective of this paper is to present our current research efforts to explain and correctly simulate the radar response of wetland vegetation/inundation mixtures, and use simulations as an aid for retrieval applications. The radar response of junco marshes under different flood conditions and vegetation stages is analysed using a set of 13 multipolarization ENVISAT ASAR scenes acquired over the Parana River Delta marshes during the period 2003-2005. The main aspect of the approach followed is the simulation of SAR wave interactions with vegetation and water, using an adapted and improved version of the EM model developed at Tor Vergata University. The results obtained indicate that with the refined EM model, it is possible to represent with a good accuracy VV and HH SAR responses of junco marshes for a variety of environmental conditions. Further work and data are needed to explain measured HV backscattering. The general agreement obtained between simulations and observations permitted the development of a simple retrieval scheme, and estimates of water level below the canopy were obtained for different environmental conditions. Because fibre-reinforced polymer/metal assemblies are so important for the durability of automotive and aeronautical structures, the fretting behaviour of unidirectional glass fibre–epoxy composite, was investigated. Various damage mechanisms were identified, which depended on several parameters, particularly fibre orientation, fibre–matrix interface structure, displacement amplitude, number of cycles, etc. The tangential force was recorded continuously during tests. The dielectrical properties of composites were characterized by using the scanning electron microscope mirror effect (SEMME) method. Using the correlation between the mechanical and electrical properties of fibre–matrix interface, an energy explanation for the fretting behaviour of epoxy composites was proposed. The friction and wear results were discussed, in terms of storage of polarization energy and relaxation associated with trapped electric charges. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

1 Prolonged bed rest or exposure to microgravity may cause several alterations in autonomic nervous system response (ANSR).2 Hindlimb unloading (HU) rats were used as an animal model of simulated microgravity to investigate ANSR changes. The experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of simulated microgravity on the autonomic nervous response of the perfused mesenteric vascular bed (MVB), vas deferens and the colon and duodenum from 2-week HU rats.3 In MVB preparations of HU rats, the frequency-dependent increases in perfusion pressure with perivascular nerve stimulation (PNS; 8–40 Hz) were inhibited, whereas the noradrenaline (NA) concentration-dependent (1–100 μm) perfusion pressure increases were potentiated. The latter most probably reflected up-regulation ofα-adrenergic receptor function. Relaxant responses of NA-precontracted MVB to PNS (4–30 Hz) or isoprenaline were not different between control and HU preparations, while vasodilation induced by the endothelial agonist ACh was reduced.4 Transmural stimulation (2–40 Hz) induced frequency-dependent twitches of the vas deferens which were reduced in vas deferens of HU rats, while the sensitivity to NA-induced contraction was significantly increased.5 In the gastroenteric system of HU rat, direct contractile responses to carbachol or tachykinin as well as relaxant or contractile responses to nervous stimulation appeared unchanged both in the proximal colon rings and in duodenal longitudinal strips.6 In conclusion, HU treatment affects peripheral tissues in which the main contractile mediators are the adrenergic ones such as resistance vessels and vas deferens, probably by reducing the release of neuromediator. This study validates NA signalling impairment as a widespread process in microgravity, which may most dramatically result in the clinical phenotype of orthostatic intolerance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the MARKAL comprehensive model in the development of coherent medium-term strategies and sound climate protection policies at local level. The local case study (Val d’Agri, Basilicata region, Italy) discusses the possible role of local communities in the achievement of the national objectives derived by the Kyoto Protocol, investigating the traditional sectors responsible for air pollution and providing a full picture of the main energy and material flows. A scenario by scenario analysis was performed to analyse the response of the modelled system to the introduction of an exogenous constraint on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The main effects are presented with reference to fuel mix, technology choice, real market prices and reduced costs of competing options. The comparison of the solutions obtained for the different scenarios is useful to point out the effects of the CO2 constraint on the total system cost and on the emission levels of other atmospheric pollutants. A further multiobjective optimisation was performed to analyse the effects of combined environmental constraints (CO2 and particulate) on the overall system cost as well as in terms of marginal costs. Summary 1 The present study aimed to evaluate the role of κ-opioid receptors at two peripheral sites, the vas deferens and the proximal colon, in κ-opioid receptor knockout mice. We investigated the role of the κ-opioid receptor in the vas deferens twitch response and in the colonic ‘off-contraction’, a rebound contractile response which follows the inhibitory response to low frequencies stimulation (10, 20, 30 Hz) and which has been suggested to ‘locally’ reproduce the contractile component of the peristaltic reflex. 2 Transmural stimulation of the vas deferens at lower frequencies (10 Hz, 10 V, 1 ms pulse trains lasting 0.5 s) evoked a contractile response that was significantly higher in the preparations from knockout mice because of lack of κ-opioid receptors than in wild type mice. A selective κ-opioid receptor agonist, U-50,488H, induced a dose-dependent inhibition of the electrically stimulated contraction in vas deferens. The percentages of reduction of the twitch response were significantly lower in knockout mice than in wild type mice after treatment with U-50,488H. The reduction of twitch response caused by U-50,488H was not reversed by administration of nor-binaltorphimine (nor-BNI) (5 × 10[sup -6] m), a selective κ-opioid receptor antagonist, in preparations from both knockout mice and wild type mice. U-50,488H has no effect on postsynaptic adrenergic receptors, as its administration did not affect the direct contractile response to noradrenaline. 3 Transmural stimulation (5 Hz, 20 V, 2 ms pulse trains lasting 30 s) induced inhibition of spontaneous activity of colonic strips during the period of stimulation, followed by an ‘off-contraction’ after the cessation of stimulation. The statistical evaluation of the ‘off-contraction’ responses between the two strains showed no significant difference. The off-contraction, measured in specimens from knockout mice, was inhibited concentration-dependently by U-50,488H (P < 0.01) and significantly less than from wild type mice. 4 The effect of U-50,488H was not reversed by administration of nor-BNI (5 × 10[sup -6] m), either in preparations from knockout mice or from wild type mice. 5 Our data may suggest that κ-opioid receptors are involved in some peripheral responses to the nerve stimulation, as indicated by the effect of U-50,488H, a selective κ-opioid receptor agonist. However, the involvement of κ-opioid receptor was also present, although less apparent, in κ -opioid receptor knockout mice, suggesting either that this drug acts not only on κ-opioid receptors but also on other receptor sites, such as κ-like receptors. An alternative interpretation can be related to a sodium channel blocking action of U-50,488H, which could explain the inhibitory effects of twitch response still present but less evident in knockout strain and the lack of effect of the antagonist nor-BNI. Periodical maintenance NDE-based inspections are today of a general acceptance for almost all complex technological structures. Nevertheless, the idea that the integrated and continuous sensing techniques can optimize the operating conditions is now in progress. Different aspects of this evolution towards health monitoring are discussed in relation with the smart materials concept through a non-exhaustive review of some realizations or experiences essentially focused on the field of sensitive materials. Piezoelectric implant technique and in situ electric resistance measurements on carbon epoxy composites are presented with more details.
