Search

We present a search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced from kaon decay that decay to two muons inside the ICARUS neutrino detector. This channel would be a signal of hidden sector models that can address outstanding issues in particle physics such as the strong CP problem and the microphysical origin of dark matter. The search is performed with data collected in the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam at Fermilab corresponding to $2.41\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target. No new physics signal is observed, and we set world-leading limits on heavy QCD axions, as well as for the Higgs portal scalar among dedicated searches. Limits are also presented in a model-independent way applicable to any new physics model predicting the process $K\to \pi+S(\to\mu\mu)$, for a long-lived particle S. This result is the first search for new physics performed with the ICARUS detector at Fermilab. It paves the way for the future program of long-lived particle searches at ICARUS.

In this paper we introduce a quotient structure on topological ternary semigroup by defining a congruence suitably. We have found conditions under which this quotient structure becomes a topological ternary semigroup. We have also obtained conditions that make this quotient a topological ternary group, whenever the base structure is a topological ternary group.

This paper reports on a measurement of electron-ion recombination in liquid argon in the ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). A clear dependence of recombination on the angle of the ionizing particle track relative to the drift electric field is observed. An ellipsoid modified box (EMB) model of recombination describes the data across all measured angles. These measurements are used for the calorimetric energy scale calibration of the ICARUS TPC, which is also presented. The impact of the EMB model is studied on calorimetric particle identification, as well as muon and proton energy measurements. Accounting for the angular dependence in EMB recombination improves the accuracy and precision of these measurements.

The ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detector has been taking physics data since 2022 as part of the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program. This paper details the equalization of the response to charge in the ICARUS time projection chamber (TPC), as well as data-driven tuning of the simulation of ionization charge signals and electronics noise. The equalization procedure removes non-uniformities in the ICARUS TPC response to charge in space and time. This work leverages the copious number of cosmic ray muons available to ICARUS at the surface. The ionization signal shape simulation applies a novel procedure that tunes the simulation to match what is measured in data. The end result of the equalization procedure and simulation tuning allows for a comparison of charge measurements in ICARUS between Monte Carlo simulation and data, showing good performance with minimal residual bias between the two.

The negative parity states in 116Sn have been investigated in terms of octupole correlation. The same is probed by using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) facility at Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata using the reaction, 114Cd({\alpha},2n) 116Sn at 34 MeV energy. Three new {\gamma}-transitions relevant to the present investigation are reported and the spin-parities of the associated levels are assigned based on the DCO-ratios and polarisation measurements. The interband transitions between the positive parity ground band and the negative parity band are newly observed and the corresponding extracted ratio of transition probability, B(E1)/B(E2) indicated the existence of octupole correlation in these nuclei. The enhanced transition rates for E1 and E3 transitions between these opposite parity bands and corroboration of soft octupole deformation ultimately aid the onset of octupole excitation in this isotope., Comment: 14 Pages, 9 figures, 1 table, for referred journal publication

Strong interactions preserve an approximate isospin symmetry between up ($u$) and down ($d$) quarks, part of the more general flavor symmetry. In the case of $K$ meson production, if this isospin symmetry were exact, it would result in equal numbers of charged ($K^+$ and $K^-$) and neutral ($K^0$ and $\overline K^{\,0}$) mesons in the final state. Here, we report results on the relative abundance of charged over neutral $K$ meson production in argon and scandium nuclei collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 11.9 GeV per nucleon pair. We find that the production of $K^+$ and $K^-$ mesons at mid-rapidity is $(18.4\pm 6.1)\%$ higher than that of the neutral $K$ mesons. Although with large uncertainties, earlier data on nucleus-nucleus collisions in the collision center-of-mass energy range $2.6 < \sqrt{s_{NN}} < 200$~\GeV are consistent with the present result. Using well-established models for hadron production, we demonstrate that known isospin-symmetry breaking effects and the initial nuclei containing more neutrons than protons lead only to a small (few percent) deviation of the charged-to-neutral kaon ratio from unity at high energies. Thus, they cannot explain the measurements. The significance of the flavor-symmetry violation beyond the known effects is 4.7$\sigma$ when the compilation of world data with uncertainties quoted by the experiments is used. In-beam $ \gamma $-ray spectroscopy of $^{131}$Xe has been carried out to study the structure of the intruder $ \nu h_{11/2} $ band. Excited states were populated via an $ \alpha $-induced fusion-evaporation reaction at E$ _{\alpha} = 38 $ MeV. Inspection of $ \gamma \gamma $-coincidence data resulted in the identification of a new rotational sequence. Based on the systematics of excitation energy, assigned spin-parity, decay pattern, and the electromagnetic character of the inter-band $ \Delta I = 1 $ $ \gamma $-transitions, this sequence is proposed as the unfavoured signature partner of the $ \nu h_{11/2} $ band. The structure of this band is further illuminated in the light of the triaxial particle rotor model (TPRM). The possibility of wobbling excitation in $ N = 77 $ Xe-Ba-Ce isotones has been explored in a systematic manner.

Excited states of the $^{203}$Po ($Z = 84, N = 119$) have been investigated after populating them through $^{194}$Pt($^{13}$C,4n) fusion-evaporation reaction at E$_{beam}$ = 74 MeV and using a large array of Compton suppressed HPGe clover detectors as the detection setup for the emitted $\gamma$-rays. Standard techniques of $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy have been applied towards establishing the level structure of the nucleus. Twenty new $\gamma$-ray transitions have been identified therein, through $\gamma-\gamma$ coincidence measurements, and spin-parity assignments of several states have been determined or confirmed, following the angular correlation and linear polarization measurements on the observed $\gamma$-rays. The excited states have been interpreted in the framework of large basis shell model calculations, while comparing their calculated and experimental energies. They have been principally ascribed to proton population in the $h_{9/2}$ and $i_{13/2}$ orbitals outside the $Z = 82$ closure and neutron occupation of the $f_{5/2}$, $p_{3/2}$ and $i_{13/2}$ orbitals in the $N = 126$ shell.

We report the first observation of two wobbling bands in $^{183}$Au, both of which were interpreted as the transverse wobbling (TW) band but with different behavior of their wobbling energies as a function of spin. It increases (decreases) with spin for the positive (negative) parity configuration. The crucial evidence for the wobbling nature of the bands, dominance of the $E2$ component in the $\Delta I = 1$ transitions between the partner bands, is provided by the simultaneous measurements of directional correlation from the oriented states (DCO) ratio and the linear polarization of the $\gamma$ rays. Particle rotor model calculations with triaxial deformation reproduce the experimental data well. A value of spin, $I_m$, has been determined for the observed TW bands below which the wobbling energy increases and above which it decreases with spin. The nucleus $^{183}$Au is, so far, the only nucleus in which both the increasing and the decreasing parts are observed and thus gives the experimental evidence of the complete transverse wobbling phenomenon., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Accepted in Physical Review Letters

The low-lying non-yrast states in $^{114}$Te have been investigated using the Indian National Gamma Array through the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{112}$Sn($^{4}$He, 2n) at a beam energy of 37 MeV. Eight new $\gamma$-transitions have been placed in the level scheme to establish the quasi-$\gamma$ band in this nucleus. Spin and parity of several excited states have been assigned from the present spectroscopy measurements. The comparison of experimental results on the observed bands with the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) and Triaxial Projected Shell Model (TPSM) confirming the existence of the quasi-$\gamma$ band structure in the $^{114}$Te nucleus.

Spectroscopic investigation of the $^{196}$Hg (Z=80, N=116) was carried out using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) setup at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata. Analysis of the acquired data led to the identification of new $\gamma$-ray transitions and levels in the excitation pattern of the nucleus along with the spin-parity assignments thereof. The latter were either previously absent or had been tentatively identified. Theoretical interpretation of the level structure obtained from these efforts can be pursued with appropriate model calculations.

Layered oxide heterostructures are the new routes to tailor desired electronic and magnetic phases emerging from competing interactions involving strong correlation, orbital hopping, tunnelling and lattice coupling phenomena. Here, we propose a half-metal/insulator superlattice that intrinsically forms spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) following a mechanism very different from the widely reported 2DEG at the single perovskite polar interfaces. From DFT$+U$ study on Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$/La$_2$CoMnO$_6$ (001) superlattice, we find that a periodic quantum well is created along [001] which breaks the three-fold $t_{2g}$ degeneracy to separate the doubly degenerate $xz$ and $yz$ states from the planar $xy$ state. In the spin-down channel, the dual effect of quantum confinement and strong correlation localizes the degenerate states, whereas the dispersive $xy$ state forms the 2DEG which is robust against perturbations to the superlattice symmetry. The spin-up channel retains the bulk insulating. Both spin polarization and orbital polarization make the superlattice ideal for spintronic and orbitronic applications. Spin-polarized density functional calculations, magnetization, and neutron diffraction measurements are carried out to investigate the magnetic exchange interactions and strong correlation effects in Yb substituted inverse spinel nickel ferrite. In the pristine form, the compound is found to be a mixed insulator under the Zaanen-Sawtazsky-Allen classification scheme as it features both charge transfer and Mott insulator mechanism. Estimation of magnetic exchange couplings reveals that both octahedral-octahedral and octahedral-tetrahedral spin-spin interactions are antiferromagnetic which is typical of a spin-frustrated triangular lattice. However, the latter is dominant compared to the former leading to a forced parallel alignment of the spins at the octahedral site which is in agreement with the results of neutron diffraction measurements. The substituent Yb is found to be settled in +3 charge state, as confirmed from the XPS measurements, to behave like a spin-half impurity carried by the localized $f_{z(x^2-y^2)}$ orbital. The impurity $f$ spin significantly weakens the antiferromagnetic coupling with the spins at the tetrahedral site, which explains the experimental observation of fall in Curie temperature with Yb substitution., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures
