Background: This article introduces the concept, food allergy literacy (FAL), which encompasses the knowledge, behaviors, and skills needed to manage a food allergy and is thus critical to child safety. Yet, there is limited clarity on how to promote FAL in children. Methods: Twelve academic databases were systematically searched to identify publications on interventions to promote FAL in children. Five publications met the inclusion criteria, which involved children (3 to 12 years), their parents, or educators and tested the efficacy of an intervention. Findings: Four interventions were for parents and educators, while 1 intervention was for parents with their children. The interventions were educational and focused on promoting participant knowledge and skills of food allergy, and/or psychosocial in nature, promoting coping, confidence, and self-efficacy in managing children's allergies. All interventions were deemed effective. Only 1 study used a control group, and none assessed the long-term benefits of the interventions. Implications for School Policy, Practice, and Equity: The results can enable health service providers and educators to design evidence-based interventions to promote FAL. This might involve designing, implementing, and evaluating curricula and play-based activities, therein, that award greater attention to food allergy--its consequences, risks, skills to prevent risk, and managing food allergy in educational settings. Conclusions: There is limited evidence on child-focused interventions that promote FAL. There is, therefore, considerable opportunity to co-design and test interventions with children.

There is a lot of research on pathways students' transition to universities, however, little is known about those students' initial transition to the Academic Pathway Program (APP). This study investigated students' transition to an Academic Pathway Program (APP) offered at a College affiliated to a metropolitan university in Sydney, Australia. Data collected from a sample of students using the Transition, Wellbeing, Help-seeking, and Adjustments Survey (TWHAS) were analysed both descriptively and inferentially. Most students reported positive moods, emotional coping, and were able to seek help without many barriers. Also, most students reported adjusting positively to the College, despite facing a few personal and social challenges such as finding time to exercise, balance study with family commitments and socialise with friends outside the College. Further, a possible association between students' adjustments and their initial feelings when beginning the College, proficiency in written and spoken English, and help-seeking was noted. Additionally, differences in the students' transitional challenges, wellbeing, help-seeking behaviors, adjustments across gender, age, and type of enrollment were evident. The implications of these findings for supporting students' transition to the Academic Pathway Programs and recommendations for future research addressing the limited sample size are discussed.

To date, research has focussed on understanding how various contextual factors facilitate students' adjustments to university as they begin their studies. However, there seems to be limited or no research and instruments that have specifically conceptualised and measured students' adjustments, considering their transitional challenges, emotional wellbeing, and barriers to seeking help. Incorporating these factors, we previously developed a model of students' adjustments, titled Transition, Wellbeing, Help-seeking and Adjustments (TWHAS). Building on this model, this paper aims to empirically validate the hypothesised TWHAS model using a validated survey and data collected from 306 first-year students transitioning to an Australian university. The strength of the predictive relations among the selected variables was tested by the significance of the path coefficients of the model. Our findings show a good fit to the theoretical model developed and demonstrate how students' sociodemographic barriers to seeking help and moods (e.g. anxiety) can create a psychological barrier (e.g. lack of openness to seeking help) and how psychological barriers can further inhibit students' overall adjustments to university. These findings have important implications for higher education policymakers, staff as well as administrators, counselling and support services future research on promoting students' the positive adjustments to transition to university.

This study surveyed 115 Australian parents' knowledge, views, and feelings of food allergy management and guidelines in primary schools. Although most parents were knowledgeable about food allergy management and related guidelines, half of them had limited understanding on how schools identify and respond to anaphylaxis, or teachers' recent training in anaphylaxis. Overall, parents' satisfaction surrounding the schools' food allergy management was mixed. Yet they highly appreciated the schools' efforts and practices in preventing the risks of food allergy, for example by identifying affected children and/or raising awareness about food allergies among the school community. Despite these efforts, parents were concerned about their child's overall safety at school, especially in playground and non-routine activities such as school camps and lapses in communication and implementation of state guidelines. To address these concerns, parents suggested many improvements in the schools' practices and guidelines, including proactive communication with parents on matters of food allergy. The implications of these findings for educators, along with recommendations for further research are presented.

To date, there is no research or instrument that can collectively measure beginning students' transitional challenges, wellbeing, help-seeking, and adjustments to university. This paper addresses this research gap by theorising and describing the relationship between these constructs and by developing and assessing the psychometric properties of a scale to measure those, labelled as Transition, Wellbeing, Help-seeking, and Adjustments Scale (TWHAS). Data was collected from 306 first year students studying in an Australian university, using a self-reporting questionnaire. The analysis shows that the TWHAS is a sound and psychometrically valid instrument. This questionnaire makes a unique contribution to the students' transition literature in Higher Education. Its implications for universities, along with recommendations for further research, are also briefly discussed.

Despite the increasing attendance of children with food allergy in schools in Australia and globally, little is known about how affected families manage their children's transition to school. This paper discusses the experiences and support needs of ten mothers during their child's transition to school in Sydney, Australia, drawn from the thematic analysis of Photo Elicitation Interviews in homes. One of the significant findings of this study was that most mothers found their child's transition to school both emotionally and practically challenging, even though their children previously attended a long day care or preschool setting. While the school's pro-active transitional planning, procedures of food allergy management and psychological support provided to families facilitated a smooth start to school, a lack of these, together with poor or no communication and non-involvement of families in the management of children's food allergy hindered it. Correspondingly, mothers highlighted the need for schools to keep children's food allergy at the forefront of their transitional planning and support them holistically by pro-actively communicating, collaborating and involving families in the discussions about food allergy, empowering them with information on the school's policies and procedures, and acknowledging their concerns of safety. Mothers considered these things to be essential. Additionally, mothers provided advice to other parents on how to achieve a positive start to school. The implications of this study's findings for schools and families are discussed. Considering the small sample size and generalisability of the findings to other contexts and countries, further research is recommended both nationally and internationally.

Despite a growing body of research and resources on flipped classrooms, the voices and transformative journeys of tertiary educators--their perspectives, practices, challenges, and adaptations to flipped teaching in higher education have been missing. To address this gap, in this paper, I chronicled my journey into flipped classrooms, in two early childhood units/courses in the pre-service teacher education program at an Australian university. Using a self-study approach, I provide an insight into my subjective and intellectual perspectives of flipping, challenges in promoting students' engagement and self-discipline in online spaces, and how I triumphed those challenges using a holistic pedagogical design, incorporating 'TPACK' and 'Scaffolding.' Furthermore, I chronicle my transformations in my teaching identity, from a traditional, embodied 'pedagogue' to a 'technogogue' within virtual teaching spaces. My intention is to provide insights into the realities of flipped learning and suggest pointers to other academics who may be embarking on a journey into flipped classrooms in higher education.

Children's knowledge of food allergies and their self-management is developmentally based, and is essential for their safe transition to school. Despite a growing number of children with food allergies starting school globally, to date, little is known about young children's knowledge of food allergy or their capacity to manage it, or their feelings and perspectives about starting school. Addressing this gap, this pilot study interviewed six children--aged four-to six-years in their family homes in Sydney, Australia about their food allergy and starting school. Data from Photo Elicitation Interviews utilising photos as prompts were analysed thematically. The results of this pilot study suggest that a child's knowledge of food allergy, their self-control to resist temptation and their ability to communicate the need for help may help them to stay safe at school, and therefore are vital in their transition to school. The implications of this pilot study for further research are discussed.

Food allergy impairs the health-related quality of life of both the affected children and their families. In particular, parents and children become anxious about the potential risks and consequences of food allergy, including disruptions in families' and children's social activities, the need for constant vigilance, children's safety, and the daily management of children's health and illnesses. These anxieties tend to increase during children's transition to school because of the increased risks outside the home, as outlined in the review of literature in the present paper. However, there is a gap in research on the concerns and support needs of families and children when starting school. Attention to parents' and children's needs and concerns is vital to ease their smooth transition to school.

This article provides insight into the cultural patterns of metacognitive guidance that occurs among children and mothers in selected Australian homes. Fourteen Anglo Australian and eight immigrant Indian (Telugu) mothers' interactions with their 4-year-old male and female children on a puzzle-solving task were videotaped. Mother-child dyads' interactions were analyzed with respect to metacognitive guidance. The results indicated variations in Anglo Australian and immigrant Indian (Telugu) mothers' metacognitive guidance, rooted in, respectively, cultural frames of independence (Australian) and interdependence (Indian). The results support the notion of cultural specificity in metacognitive guidance. Implications for early childhood practice are provided. (Contains 2 tables.)

This study aimed to examine views, concerns and expectations of immigrant Bangladeshi parents and children in Sydney concerning transition to kindergarten (the first year of school). This study builds on the previous work of the Starting School Research Project at the University of Western Sydney by: (1) deriving data from families and children for whom English is not the first language; and (2) exploring the transitional experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) children from prior-to-school to school settings. Ten parents and four children were interviewed on the topic of transition to school. In particular, parents were asked to indicate their concerns and expectations that would assist schools in meeting the needs of Bangladeshi children and would make transition to school a positive experience for all concerned. The results revealed issues specific to families and children of non-English-speaking background regarding transition to school. (Contains 2 tables.)

A variety of foods such as dairy milk, peanut and tree nuts, fish and egg can cause severe allergic reactions in some children. The foods that cause allergies could trigger severe breathing difficulties (anaphylaxis) for these children and, if not treated immediately, could lead to death. Caring for a child with potentially life-threatening allergies has social, emotional, and financial consequences. This paper gives an insight into the psychosocial and cultural aspects and experiences of a migrant mother in raising a child with multiple and potentially life-threatening food allergies. It also advocates for improved and equitable access to child care for these children.

This study explored early childhood teachers' views relating to culture and play by collecting information from them on cultural differences and parental perceptions of play, culturally appropriate play (CAP) practices and barriers in its implementation. The participants of the study were 14 early childhood educators working in long day care (LDC) or out, of, school, hours care (OOSH) settings located in Sydney, Australia. Children in the selected centers represented various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Teachers in the present study reported noticeable differences in the play of children of diverse cultural backgrounds. However, they believed that the differences in children's play were attributable to the children's proficiency in English language and gender rather than to their culture. The teachers reported they had limited or no information on the children's cultural patterns of play at home. The lack of information on cultural patterns of play, perhaps, has led to difficulties in understanding the cultural origins of play or in accommodating cultural differences into programming. The results highlight the need for educators to have greater knowledge of the cultural bases of play to enable them to provide, in partnership with parents, culturally appropriate play experiences for children.
