Phonon polaritons (PhPs) (light coupled to lattice vibrations) in the highly anisotropic polar layered material molybdenum trioxide (\alpha-MoO_3) are currently the focus of intense research efforts due to their extreme subwavelength field confinement, directional propagation and unprecedented low losses. Nevertheless, prior research has primarily concentrated on exploiting the squeezing and steering capabilities of \alpha-MoO_3 PhPs, without inquiring much into the dominant microscopic mechanism that determines their long lifetimes, key for their implementation in nanophotonic applications. This study delves into the fundamental processes that govern PhP damping in \alpha-MoO_3 by combining ab initio calculations with scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements across a broad temperature range (from 8 to 300 K). The remarkable agreement between our theoretical predictions and experimental observations allows us to identify third-order anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering as the main damping mechanism of \alpha-MoO_3 PhPs. These findings shed light on the fundamental limits of low-loss PhPs, a crucial factor for assessing their implementation into nanophotonic devices., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

We develop the theory of groupoid graded semisimple rings. Our rings are neither unital nor one-sided artinian. Instead, they exhibit a strong version of having local units and being locally artinian, and we call them $\Gamma_0$-artinian. One of our main results is a groupoid graded version of the Wedderburn-Artin Theorem, where we characterize groupoid graded semisimple rings as direct sums of graded simple $\Gamma_0$-artinian rings and we exhibit the structure of this latter class of rings. In this direction, we also prove a groupoid graded version of Jacobson-Chevalley density theorem. We need to define and study properties of groupoid gradings on matrix rings (possibly of infinite size) over groupoid graded rings, and specially over groupoid graded division rings. Because of that, we study groupoid graded division rings and their graded modules. We consider a natural notion of freeness for groupoid graded modules that, when specialized to group graded rings, gives the usual one, and show that for a groupoid graded division ring all graded modules are free (in this sense). Contrary to the group graded case, there are groupoid graded rings for which all graded modules are free according to our definition, but they are not graded division rings. We exhibit an easy example of this kind of rings and characterize such class among groupoid graded semisimple rings. We also relate groupoid graded semisimple rings with the notion of semisimple category defined by B. Mitchell. For that, we show the link between functors from a preadditive category to abelian groups and graded modules over the groupoid graded ring associated to this category, generalizing a result of P. Gabriel. We characterize simple artinian categories and categories for which every functor from them to abelian groups is free in the sense of B. Mitchell., Comment: 87 pages

Traditional field phenotyping methods are often manual, time-consuming, and destructive, posing a challenge for breeding progress. To address this bottleneck, robotics and automation technologies offer efficient sensing tools to monitor field evolution and crop development throughout the season. This study aimed to develop an autonomous ground robotic system for LiDAR-based field phenotyping in plant breeding trials. A Husky platform was equipped with a high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) laser scanner to collect in-field terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data without human intervention. To automate the TLS process, a 3D ray casting analysis was implemented for optimal TLS site planning, and a route optimization algorithm was utilized to minimize travel distance during data collection. The platform was deployed in two cotton breeding fields for evaluation, where it autonomously collected TLS data. The system provided accurate pose information through RTK-GNSS positioning and sensor fusion techniques, with average errors of less than 0.6 cm for location and 0.38$^{\circ}$ for heading. The achieved localization accuracy allowed point cloud registration with mean point errors of approximately 2 cm, comparable to traditional TLS methods that rely on artificial targets and manual sensor deployment. Our main result states that whenever we have a non-Euclidean norm $\|\cdot\|$ on a two-dimensional vector space $X$, there exists some $x\neq 0$ such that for every $\lambda\neq 1, \lambda>0$, there exist $y, z\in X$ verifying that $\|y\|=\lambda\|x\|$, $z\neq 0$, and $z$ belongs to the bisectors $B(-x,x)$ and $B(-y,y)$. Throughout this paper we also state and prove some other simple but maybe useful results about the geometry of the unit sphere of strictly convex planes.

There are a couple of purposes in this paper: to study a problem of approximation with exponential functions and to show its relevance for the economic science. We present results that completely solve the problem of the best approximation by means of exponential functions and we will be able to determine what kind of data is suitable to be fitted. Data will be approximated using TAC (implemented in the R-package nlstac), a numerical algorithm for fitting data by exponential patterns without initial guess designed by the authors. We check one more time the robustness of this algorithm by successfully applying it to two very distant areas of economy: demand curves and nonlinear time series. This shows TAC's utility and highlights how far this algorithm could be used.

In this note we show that the usual notion of fuzzy norm defined on a linear space is equivalent to that of quasiconcave function, in the sense that every fuzzy norm $N:X\times\mathbb{R}[0,1]$ defined on a (real or complex) linear space X is uniquely determined by a quasiconcave function $f:X\to[0, 1]$. We explore the minimum requirements that we need to impose to some quasiconcave function $f:X\to[0, 1]$ in order to define a fuzzy norm $N:X\times\mathbb{R}[0,1]$. Later we use this equivalence to prove some properties of fuzzy norms, like a generalisation of the celebrated Decomposition Theorem.

Quantum computing becomes more of a reality as time passes, bringing several cybersecurity challenges. Modern cryptography is based on the computational complexity of specific mathematical problems, but as new quantum-based computers appear, classical methods might not be enough to secure communications. In this paper, we analyse the state of the Galileo Open Service Navigation Message Authentication (OSNMA) to overcome these new threats. This analysis and its assessment have been performed using OSNMA documentation, reviewing the available Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) algorithms competing in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standardization process, and studying the possibility of its implementation in the Galileo service. The main barrier to adopting the PQC approach is the size of both the signature and the key. The analysis shows that OSNMA is not yet prepared to face the quantum threat, and a significant change would be required. Streaming Machine Translation (MT) is the task of translating an unbounded input text stream in real-time. The traditional cascade approach, which combines an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and an MT system, relies on an intermediate segmentation step which splits the transcription stream into sentence-like units. However, the incorporation of a hard segmentation constrains the MT system and is a source of errors. This paper proposes a Segmentation-Free framework that enables the model to translate an unsegmented source stream by delaying the segmentation decision until the translation has been generated. Extensive experiments show how the proposed Segmentation-Free framework has better quality-latency trade-off than competing approaches that use an independent segmentation model. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is capable of delivering an unprecedented all-sky, high-spatial resolution, multi-epoch infrared map to the astronomical community. This opportunity arises in the midst of numerous ground- and space-based surveys that will provide extensive spectroscopy and imaging together covering the entire sky (such as Rubin/LSST, Euclid, UNIONS, SPHEREx, DESI, SDSS-V, GALAH, 4MOST, WEAVE, MOONS, PFS, UVEX, NEO Surveyor, etc.). Roman can uniquely provide uniform high-spatial-resolution (~0.1 arcsec) imaging over the entire sky, vastly expanding the science reach and precision of all of these near-term and future surveys. This imaging will not only enhance other surveys, but also facilitate completely new science. By imaging the full sky over two epochs, Roman can measure the proper motions for stars across the entire Milky Way, probing 100 times fainter than Gaia out to the very edge of the Galaxy. Here, we propose NANCY: a completely public, all-sky survey that will create a high-value legacy dataset benefiting innumerable ongoing and forthcoming studies of the universe. NANCY is a pure expression of Roman's potential: it images the entire sky, at high spatial resolution, in a broad infrared bandpass that collects as many photons as possible. In this paper, we describe VivesDebate-Speech, a corpus of spoken argumentation created to leverage audio features for argument mining tasks. The creation of this corpus represents an important contribution to the intersection of speech processing and argument mining communities, and one of the most complete publicly available resources in this topic. Moreover, we have performed a set of first-of-their-kind experiments which show an improvement when integrating audio features into the argument mining pipeline. We present a new method to simultaneously/self-consistently model the mass distribution of galaxy clusters that combines constraints from strong lensing features, X-ray emission and galaxy kinematics measurements. We are able to successfully decompose clusters into their collisionless and collisional mass components thanks to the X-ray surface brightness, as well as using the dynamics of cluster members to obtain more accurate masses with the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies. Knowledge from all observables is included through a consistent Bayesian approach in the likelihood or in physically motivated priors. We apply this method to the galaxy cluster Abell S1063 and produce a mass model that we publicly release with this paper. The resulting mass distribution presents a different ellipticities for the intra-cluster gas and the other large-scale mass components; and deviation from elliptical symmetry in the main halo. We assess the ability of our method to recover the masses of the different elements of the cluster using a mock cluster based on a simplified version of our Abell S1063 model. Thanks to the wealth of information provided by the mass model and the X-ray emission, we also found evidence for an on-going merger event with gas sloshing from a smaller infalling structure into the main cluster. In agreement with previous findings, the total mass, gas profile and gas mass fraction are consistent with small deviations from the hydrostatic equilibrium. The discovery of quantum emitters in two-dimensional materials has triggered a surge of research to assess their suitability for quantum photonics. While their microscopic origin is still the subject of intense studies, ordered arrays of quantum emitters are routinely fabricated using static strain-gradients, which are used to drive excitons toward localized regions of the 2D crystals where quantum-light-emission takes place. However, the possibility of using strain in a dynamic fashion to control the appearance of individual quantum emitters has never been explored so far. In this work, we tackle this challenge by introducing a novel hybrid semiconductor-piezoelectric device in which WSe2 monolayers are integrated onto piezoelectric pillars delivering both static and dynamic strains. Static strains are first used to induce the formation of quantum emitters, whose emission shows photon anti-bunching. Their excitonic population and emission energy are then reversibly controlled via the application of a voltage to the piezoelectric pillar. Numerical simulations combined with drift-diffusion equations show that these effects are due to a strain-induced modification of the confining-potential landscape, which in turn leads to a net redistribution of excitons among the different quantum emitters. Our work provides relevant insights into the role of strain in the formation of quantum emitters in 2D materials and suggests a method to switch them on and off on demand., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

The ATLAS EventIndex system comprises the catalogue of all events collected, processed or generated by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC accelerator, and all associated software tools to collect, store and query this information. ATLAS records several billion particle interactions every year of operation, processes them for analysis and generates even larger simulated data samples; a global catalogue is needed to keep track of the location of each event record and be able to search and retrieve specific events for in-depth investigations. Each EventIndex record includes summary information on the event itself and the pointers to the files containing the full event. Most components of the EventIndex system are implemented using BigData open-source tools. This paper describes the architectural choices and their evolution in time, as well as the past, current and foreseen future implementations of all EventIndex components., Comment: 21 pages

The choice of a time integration scheme is a crucial aspect of any transient fluid simulation, and Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is no exception. The influence of the time integration scheme on energy balance is here addressed. To do so, explicit expressions allowing to compute the deviations from the energy balance, induced by the time integration scheme, are provided. These expressions, computed \textit{a posteriori}, are valid for different integration methods. Such formulation is tested with the simulation of a two-dimensional non-viscous impact of two jets, with no artificial dissipation terms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first stable simulation of a non-dissipative system with a weakly-compressible SPH method. A viscous case, the Taylor-Green vortex, has also been simulated. A new generation of powerful dark energy experiments will open new vistas for cosmology in the next decade. However, these projects cannot reach their utmost potential without data from other telescopes. This white paper focuses in particular on the compelling benefits of ground-based spectroscopic and photometric observations to complement the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, as well as smaller programs in aid of a DESI-2 experiment and CMB-S4. These additional data sets will both improve dark energy constraints from these flagship projects beyond what would possible on their own and open completely new windows into fundamental physics. For example, additional photometry and single-object spectroscopy will provide necessary follow-up information for supernova and strong lensing cosmology, while highly-multiplexed spectroscopy both from smaller facilities over wide fields and from larger facilities over narrower regions of sky will yield more accurate photometric redshift estimates for weak lensing and galaxy clustering measurements from the Rubin Observatory, provide critical spectroscopic host galaxy redshifts for supernova Hubble diagrams, provide improved understanding of limiting astrophysical systematic effects, and enable new measurements that probe the nature of gravity. We have modeled the velocity-resolved reverberation response of the H\b{eta} broad emission line in nine Seyfert 1 galaxies from the Lick Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) Monitioring Project 2016 sample, drawing inferences on the geometry and structure of the low-ionization broad-line region (BLR) and the mass of the central supermassive black hole. Overall, we find that the H\b{eta} BLR is generally a thick disk viewed at low to moderate inclination angles. We combine our sample with prior studies and investigate line-profile shape dependence, such as log10(FWHM/{\sigma}), on BLR structure and kinematics and search for any BLR luminosity-dependent trends. We find marginal evidence for an anticorrelation between the profile shape of the broad H\b{eta} emission line and the Eddington ratio, when using the root-mean-square spectrum. However, we do not find any luminosity-dependent trends, and conclude that AGNs have diverse BLR structure and kinematics, consistent with the hypothesis of transient AGN/BLR conditions rather than systematic trends.

Simultaneous Machine Translation is the task of incrementally translating an input sentence before it is fully available. Currently, simultaneous translation is carried out by translating each sentence independently of the previously translated text. More generally, Streaming MT can be understood as an extension of Simultaneous MT to the incremental translation of a continuous input text stream. In this work, a state-of-the-art simultaneous sentence-level MT system is extended to the streaming setup by leveraging the streaming history. Extensive empirical results are reported on IWSLT Translation Tasks, showing that leveraging the streaming history leads to significant quality gains. Scheduled to launch in late 2021, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a NASA Small Explorer Mission in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The mission will open a new window of investigation - imaging X-ray polarimetry. The observatory features 3 identical telescopes each consisting of a mirror module assembly with a polarization-sensitive imaging X-ray detector at the focus. A coilable boom, deployed on orbit, provides the necessary 4-m focal length. The observatory utilizes a 3-axis-stabilized spacecraft which provides services such as power, attitude determination and control, commanding, and telemetry to the ground. During its 2-year baseline mission, IXPE will conduct precise polarimetry for samples of multiple categories of X-ray sources, with follow-on observations of selected targets.

We carried out spectroscopic monitoring of 21 low-redshift Seyfert 1 galaxies using the Kast double spectrograph on the 3-m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory from April 2016 to May 2017. Targeting active galactic nuclei (AGN) with luminosities of {\lambda}L{\lambda} (5100 {\AA}) = 10^44 erg/s and predicted H{\beta} lags of 20-30 days or black hole masses of 10^7-10^8.5 Msun, our campaign probes luminosity-dependent trends in broad-line region (BLR) structure and dynamics as well as to improve calibrations for single-epoch estimates of quasar black hole masses. Here we present the first results from the campaign, including H{\beta} emission-line light curves, integrated H{\beta} lag times (8-30 days) measured against V-band continuum light curves, velocity-resolved reverberation lags, line widths of the broad H{\beta} components, and virial black hole mass estimates (10^7.1-10^8.1 Msun). Our results add significantly to the number of existing velocity-resolved lag measurements and reveal a diversity of BLR gas kinematics at moderately high AGN luminosities. AGN continuum luminosity appears not to be correlated with the type of kinematics that its BLR gas may exhibit. We present CoLoRe, a public software package to efficiently generate synthetic realisations of multiple cosmological surveys. CoLoRe can simulate the growth of structure with different degrees of accuracy, with the current implementation supporting lognormal fields, first, and second order Lagrangian perturbation theory. CoLoRe simulates the density field on an all-sky light-cone up to a desired maximum redshift, and uses it to generate multiple 2D and 3D maps: galaxy positions and velocities, lensing (shear, magnification, convergence), integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, line intensity mapping, and line of sight skewers for simulations of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. We test the accuracy of the simulated maps against analytical theoretical predictions, and showcase its performance with a multi-survey simulation including DESI galaxies and quasars, LSST galaxies and lensing, and SKA intensity mapping and radio galaxies. We expect CoLoRe to be particularly useful in studies aiming to characterise the impact of systematics in multi-experiment analyses, quantify the covariance between different datasets, and test cross-correlation pipelines for near-future surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication in JCAP. Given some non-Archimedean field $\mathbb{K}$ and some $\mathbb{K}$-linear space $X$, the usual way to define a norm over $X$ involves the {\em ultrametric inequality} $\|x+y\|\leq\max\{\|x\|,\|y\|\}$. In this note we will try to analyse the convenience of considering a wider variety of norms. The main result of the present note is a characterisation of the isometries between finite-dimensional linear spaces over some valued field endowed with the norm $\|\,\cdot\,\|_1$, a result that can be seen as the closest to a Mazur--Ulam Theorem in non-Archimedean analysis., Comment: 8 pages

We show that the group of isometries of an ultrametric normed space can be seen as a kind of a fractal. Then, we apply this description to study ultrametric counterparts of some classical problems in Archimedean analysis, such as the so called Probl\`eme des rotations de Mazur or Tingley's problem. In particular, it turns out that, in contrast with the case of real normed spaces, isometries between ultrametric normed spaces can be very far from being linear.

Simultaneous machine translation has recently gained traction thanks to significant quality improvements and the advent of streaming applications. Simultaneous translation systems need to find a trade-off between translation quality and response time, and with this purpose multiple latency measures have been proposed. However, latency evaluations for simultaneous translation are estimated at the sentence level, not taking into account the sequential nature of a streaming scenario. Indeed, these sentence-level latency measures are not well suited for continuous stream translation resulting in figures that are not coherent with the simultaneous translation policy of the system being assessed. Phonon polaritons (PhPs),light coupled to lattice vibrations,with in-plane hyperbolic dispersion exhibit ray-like propagation with large wavevectors and enhanced density of optical states along certain directions on a surface. As such, they have raised a surge of interest as they promise unprecedented possibilities for the manipulation of infrared light with planar circuitry and at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, the focusing of in-plane hyperbolic PhPs propagating along thin slabs of MoO3. To that end, we developed metallic nanoantennas of convex geometries for both the efficient launching and focusing of the polaritons. Remarkably, the foci obtained exhibit enhanced near-field confinement and absorption compared to foci produced by in-plane isotropic PhPs. More intriguingly, foci sizes as small as lamdap/5 =lamda0/50 were achieved (lamdap is the polariton wavelength and lamda0 the photon wavelength). Focusing of in-plane hyperbolic polaritons introduces a first and most basic building block developing planar polariton optics utilizing in-plane anisotropic van der Waals materials and metasurfaces.

Recent discoveries of polaritons in van der Waals (vdW) crystals with directional in-plane propagation, ultra-low losses, and broad spectral tunability have opened the door for unprecedented manipulation of the flow of light at the nanoscale. However, despite their extraordinary potential for nano-optics, these unique polaritons also present an important limitation: their directional propagation is intrinsically determined by the crystal structure of the host material, which imposes forbidden directions of propagation and hinders its control. Here, we theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate that directional polaritons (in-plane hyperbolic phonon polaritons) in a vdW biaxial slab (alpha-phase molybdenum trioxide) can be steered along previously forbidden directions by inducing an optical topological transition, which naturally emerges when placing the slab on a substrate with a given negative permittivity (4H-SiC). Importantly, due to the low-loss nature of this topological transition, we are able to visualize in real space exotic intermediate polaritonic states between mutually orthogonal hyperbolic regimes, which permit to unveil the unique topological origin of the transition. This work provides new insights into the emergence of low-loss optical topological transitions in vdW crystals, offering a novel route to efficiently steer the flow of energy at the nanoscale.
