Search

Strong coupling between light and molecular matter is currently attracting interest both in chemistry and physics, in the fast-growing field of molecular polaritonics. The large near-field enhancement of the electric field of plasmonic surfaces and their high tunability make arrays of metallic nanoparticles an interesting platform to achieve and control strong coupling. Two dimensional plasmonic arrays with several nanoparticles per unit cell and crystalline symmetries can host topological edge and corner states. Here we explore the coupling of molecular materials to these edge states using a coupled-dipole framework including long-range interactions. We study both the weak and strong coupling regimes and demonstrate that coupling to topological edge states can be employed to enhance highly-directional long-range energy transfer between molecules., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

This paper proposes a novel slacks-based interval DEA approach that computes interval targets, slacks, and crisp inefficiency scores. It uses interval arithmetic and requires solving a mixed-integer linear program. The corresponding super-efficiency formulation to discriminate among the efficient units is also presented. We also provide a case study of its application to sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean region, assessing the sustainable tourism efficiency of twelve Mediterranean regions to validate the proposed approach. The inputs and outputs cover the three sustainability dimensions and include GHG emissions as an undesirable output. Three regions were found inefficient, and the corresponding inputs and output improvements were computed. We show the first experimental demonstration of room-temperature exciton-polariton (EP) condensation from a bound state in the continuum (BIC). This demonstration is achieved by strongly coupling stable excitons in an organic perylene dye with the extremely long-lived BIC in a dielectric metasurface of silicon nanoparticles. The long lifetime of the BIC, mainly due to the suppression of radiation leakage, allows for EP thermalization to the ground state before decaying. This property results in a condensation threshold of less than 5 \mu J cm^{-2}, one order of magnitude lower that the lasing threshold reported in similar systems in the weak coupling limit.

In the last years there have been multiple proposals in nanophotonics to mimic topological condensed matter systems. However, nanoparticles have degrees of freedom that atoms lack of, like dimensions or shape, which can be exploited to explore topology beyond electronics. Elongated nanoparticles can act like projectors of the electric field in the direction of the major axis. Then, by orienting them in an array the coupling between them can be tuned, allowing to open a gap in an otherwise gapless system. As a proof of the potential of the use of orientation of nanoparticles for topology, we study 1D chains of prolate spheroidal silver nanoparticles. We show that in these arrays spatial modulation of the polarization allows to open gaps, engineer hidden crystalline symmetries and to switch on/off or left/right edge states depending on the polarization of the incident electric field. This opens a path towards exploiting features of nanoparticles for topology to go beyond analogues of condensed matter systems.

The accuracy in determining the spatial-kinematical parameters of open clusters makes them ideal tracers of the Galactic structure. Young open clusters (YOCs) are the main representative of the clustered star formation mode, which identifies how most of the stars in the Galaxy form. We apply the Kriging technique to a sample of Gaia YOCs within a 3.5 kpc radius around the Sun and log(age) $\leq$ 7.5, age in years, to obtain the $Z(X,Y)$ and $V_Z(X,Y)$ maps. The previous work by Alfaro et al. (1991) showed that Kriging can provide reliable results even with small data samples ($N \sim 100$). We approach the 3D spatial and vertical velocity field structure of the Galactic disk defined by YOCs and analyze the hierarchy of the stellar cluster formation, which shows a rich hierarchical structure, displaying complexes embedded within each other. We discuss the fundamental characteristics of the methodology used to perform the mapping and point out the main results obtained in phenomenological terms. Both the 3D spatial distribution and the vertical velocity field reveal a complex disk structure with a high degree of substructures. Their analysis provides clues about the main physical mechanisms that shape the phase space of the clustered star formation in this Galactic area. Warp, corrugations, and high local deviations in $Z$ and $V_Z$, appear intimately connected in a single but intricate scenario.

Various optical phenomena can be induced in periodic arrays of nanoparticles by the radiative coupling of the local dipoles in each particle. Probably the most impressive example is bound states in the continuum (BICs), which are electromagnetic modes with a dispersion inside the light cone but infinite lifetime, i.e., modes that cannot leak to the continuum. Symmetry-protected BICs appear at highly symmetric points in the dispersion of periodic systems. Although the addition of nonequivalent lattice points in a unit cell is an easy and straightforward way of tuning the symmetry, BICs in such particle lattice, i.e., non-Bravais lattice, are less explored among periodic systems. Starting from a periodic square lattice of Si nanodisks, we have prepared three non-Bravais lattices by detuning size and position of the second disk in the unit cell. Diffraction-induced coupling excites magnetic/electric dipoles in each nanodisk, producing two surface lattice resonances at the $\Gamma$ point with a band gap in between. %of $\sim$ 41 meV. The high/low energy branch becomes a BIC for the size/position-detuned array, respectively, while both branches are bright (or leaky) when both size and position are detuned simultaneously. The role of magnetic and electric resonances in dielectric nanoparticles and the change of BIC to bright character of the modes is explained by the two different origins of BICs in the detuned arrays, which is further discussed with the aid of a coupled electric and magnetic dipole model. This study gives a simple way of tuning BICs at telecom wavelengths in non-Bravais lattices, including both plasmonic and dielectric systems, thus scalable to a wide range of frequencies., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been thoroughly investigated due to their formally divergent Q-factor, especially those emerging in all-dielectric, nanostructured metasurfaces from symmetry protection at the $\Gamma$ point (in-plane wavevector $k_{||}=0$). Less attention has been paid to accidental BICs that may appear at any other $k_{||}\not =0$ in the band structure of supported modes, being in turn difficult to predict. Here we make use of a coupled electric/magnetic dipole model to determine analytical conditions for the emergence of accidental BICs, valid for any planar array of meta-atoms that can be described by dipolar resonances, which is the case of many nanostructures in the optical domain. This is explored for all-dielectric nanospheres through explicit analytical conditions that allow us in turn to predict accidental BIC positions in the parameter space $(\omega,\bf{k_{||}}$). Finally, such conditions are exploited to determine not only single, but also double (for both linear polarizations) accidental BICs occurring at the same position in the dispersion relation $\omega-\bf{k_{||}}$ for realistic semiconductor nanodisk meta-atoms. This might pave the way to a variety of BIC-enhanced light-matter interaction phenomena at the nanoscale such as lasing or non-linear conversion, that benefit from emerging at wavevectors away from the $\Gamma$ point (off-normal incidence) overlapping for both linear polarizations., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) represent a new paradigm in photonics due to the full suppression of radiation losses. However, this suppression has also hampered their direct observation. By using a double terahertz (THz) near-field technique that allows the local excitation and detection of the THz amplitude, we are able to map for the first time the electromagnetic field of BICs over extended areas, unveiling the field-symmetry protection that suppresses far-field radiation. This investigation, done for metasurfaces of dimer rod resonators, reveals the in-plane extension and formation of BICs with anti-symmetric phases, in agreement with coupled-dipole calculations. By displacing the rods, we demonstrate that mirror symmetry is not a necessary condition for BIC formation. Only $\pi$-rotation symmetry is required, making BICs exceptionally robust to structural changes. Exposure of metal surfaces to multiple ultrashort laser pulses under certain conditions leads to the formation of well-defined periodic surface structures. We show how the period of such structures in steel can be tuned over a wide range by controlling the complex interaction mechanisms triggered in the material. Amongst the different irradiation parameters that influence the properties of the induced structures, the angle of incidence of the laser beam occupies a prominent role. We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of this angle dependence in steel upon irradiation with laser pulses of 120 fs duration and 800 nm wavelength, while moving the sample at constant speed. Our findings can be grouped into two blocks. First, we observe the spatial coexistence of two different ripple periods at the steel surface, both featuring inverse scaling upon angle increase, which are related to forward and backward propagation of surface plasmon polaritons. To understand the underlying physical phenomena, we extend a recently developed model that takes into account quantitative properties of the surface roughness to the case of absorbing metals (large imaginary part of the dielectric function), and obtain an excellent match with the experimentally observed angle dependence. As second important finding, we observe a quill writing effect, also termed non-reciprocal writing, in form of a significant change of the ripple period upon reversing the sample movement direction. This remarkable phenomenon has been observed so far only inside dielectric materials and our work underlines its importance also in laser surface processing. We attribute the origin of symmetry breaking to the non-symmetric micro- and nanoscale roughness induced upon static multiple pulse irradiation, leading to non-symmetric modification of the wavevector of the coupled surface plasmon polariton.

We have investigated the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS or ripples) on silicon upon excitation with p-polarized excimer laser pulses in the deep ultraviolet region (wavelength = 193 nm, pulse duration = 20 ns). Well-pronounced ripples with a period close to the laser wavelength were observed for pulse numbers N = 100 or higher, and the ripple period increased with the angle of incidence. While these results seem to be qualitatively consistent with the standard Sipe-theory, we observed a fundamentally different ripple formation mechanism and ripple morphology. At low pulse numbers, isolated nanoparticles with a size of a few tens of nanometers are observed at the silicon surface, which then start to agglomerate in 2D and self-organize to form ripples with a very shallow modulation depth as the pulse number increases. Employing a recently developed plasmonic model based on the propagation of a surface plasmon polariton on a rough surface, we demonstrate excellent quantitative agreement of the evolution of the ripple period with incidence angle. Finally, we show that surface regions exposed to lower laser fluence feature micro- and nanopores, which give rise to pronounced photoluminescence (PL) emission in the visible spectral region, as opposed to the nanoparticle-based ripples not showing PL., Comment: 13 pages

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) emerge throughout Physics as leaky/resonant modes that remain however highly localized. They have attracted much attention in Optics and Photonics, and especially in metasurfaces, i.e. planar arrays of sub-wavelength meta-atoms. One of their most outstanding feature is the arbitrarily large Q-factors they induce upon approaching the BIC condition, which we exploit here to achieve a narrow transparency band. We first show how to shift a canonical BIC in an all-dielectric metasurface, consisting of high-refractive disks exhibiting in- and out-of-plane magnetic dipole (MD) resonances, by tuning the periodicity of the array. By means of our coupled electric/magnetic dipole formulation, we show analytically that when the quasi-BIC overlaps with the broad (in-plane MD) resonance, a full transparency band emerges with diverging Q-factor upon approaching the BIC condition in parameter space. Finally, our experimental measurements in the microwave regime with a large array of high-refractive-index disks confirm the theoretical predictions. Our results reveal a simple mechanism to engineer an ultra-narrow BIC-induced transparency band that could be exploited throughout the electromagnetic spectrum with obvious applications in filtering and sensing., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The optical properties of infinite planar array of scattering particles, metasurfaces and metagratings, are attracting special attention lately for their rich phenomenology, including both plasmonic and high-refractive-index dielectric meta-atoms with a variety of electric and magnetic resonant responses. Herein we derive a coupled electric and magnetic dipole (CEMD) analytical formulation to describe the reflection and transmission of such periodic arrays, including specular and diffractive orders, valid in the spectral regimes where only dipolar multipoles are needed. Electric and/or magnetic dipoles with all three orientations arising in turn from a single or various meta-atoms per unit cell are considered. The 2D lattice Green function is rewritten in terms of a 1D (chain) version that fully converges and can be easily calculated. Modes emerging as poles of such lattice Green function can be extracted. This formulation can be applied to investigate a wealth of plasmonic, all-dielectric, and hybrid metasurfaces/metagratings of interest throughout the electromagnetic spectrum., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The directionality and polarization of light show peculiar properties when the scattering by a dielectric sphere can be described exclusively by electric and magnetic dipolar modes. Particularly, when these modes oscillate in-phase with equal amplitude, at the so-called first Kerker condition, the zero optical backscattering condition emerges for non-dissipating spheres. However, the role of absorption and optical gain in the first Kerker condition remains unexplored. In this work, we demonstrate that either absorption or optical gain precludes the first Kerker condition and, hence, the absence of backscattered radiation light, regardless of the size of the particle, incident wavelength, and incoming polarization. Finally, we derive the necessary prerequisites of the second Kerker condition of the zero forward light scattering, finding that optical gain is a compulsory requirement.

Controlling the electromagnetic helicity and directionality of the light scattered by dielectric particles is paramount to a variety of phenomenology of interest in all-dielectric optics and photonics. In this Letter, we show that the conservation of the electromagnetic helicity in the scattering by high-index dielectric Mie spheres can be used as a probe of pure-multipolar spectral regions, particularly, of dipolar nature, beyond its presumed spectral interval. This finding reveals that the dipolar behavior is not necessarily limited to small particles, in striking contrast to the current state of the art. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the optimum forward light scattering condition, predicted for a particular nano-sphere in the limit of small particle, is fulfilled in fact at a fixed x size parameter for an infinite number of refractive indexes

The nearly zero optical forward scattering and anti-dual conditions are usually associated to the so-called second Kerker condition, at which the electric and magnetic responses are phase-shifted by {\pi}. However, as we show, this condition is insufficient to both give rise to the nearly zero optical forward scattering and the anti-duality symmetry, in striking contrast to the actual view of the problem. Interestingly, we demonstrate that near the electric and magnetic dipolar resonances, the energy radiation pattern in the far-field limit resembles to the one arising from the first Kerker condition, with nearly-zero backscattering.

The light-matter coupling between electromagnetic modes guided by a semiconductor nanowire and excitonic states of molecules localized in its surrounding media is studied from both classical and quantum perspectives, with the aim of describing the strong coupling regime. Weakly guided modes (bare photonic modes) are found through a classical analysis, identifying those lowest-order modes presenting large electromagnetic fields spreading outside the nanowire, while preserving their robust guided behavior. Experimental fits of the dielectric permittivity of an organic dye that exhibits excitonic states are used for realistic scenarios. A quantum model properly confirms through an avoided mode crossing that the strong coupling regime can be achieved for this configuration, leading to Rabi splitting values above 100 meV. In addition, it is shown that the coupling strength depends on the fraction of energy spread outside the nanowire, rather than on the mode field localization. These results open up a new avenue towards strong coupling phenomenology involving propagating modes in non-absorbing media., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The formation of self-organized laser induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) in metals, semiconductors and dielectrics upon pulsed laser irradiation is a well-known phenomenon, receiving increased attention due to its huge technological potential. For the case of metals, a major role in this process is played by surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating at the interface of the metal with the medium of incidence. Yet, simple and advanced models based on SPP propagation sometimes fail to explain experimental results, even of basic features as the LIPSS period. We experimentally demonstrate, for the particular case of LIPSS on Cu, that significant deviations of the structure period from the predictions of the standard model are observed, which are very pronounced for elevated angles of laser incidence. In order to explain this deviation, we introduce a model based on the propagation of a SPP on a rough surface that takes into account the influence of the specific roughness properties on the SPP wave vector. Good agreement of the modelling results with the experimental data is observed, which highlights the potential of this model for the general understanding of LIPSS in other metals., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The conservation of the photon total angular momentum in the incident direction in an axially symmetric scattering process is a very well known fact. Nonetheless, the re-distribution of this conserved magnitude into its spin and orbital components, an effect known as the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of light, is still a matter of active research. Here, we discuss the effect of the absorption on the SOI in the scattering of a sub-wavelength Silicon particle. Describing the scattering process of a electric and magnetic dipole, we show via the asymmetry parameter that the SOI of light in the scattering of high refractive index nanoparticles endures in the presence of optical losses. This effect results in optical mirages whose maximum values surpass those of an electric dipolar scatterer.

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are ubiquitous in many areas of physics, attracting especial interest for their ability to confine waves with infinite lifetimes. Metasurfaces provide a suitable platform to realize them in photonics; such BICs are remarkably robust, being however complex to tune in frequency-wavevector space.Here we propose a scheme to engineer BICs and quasi-BICs with single magnetic-dipole resonance meta-atoms. Upon changing the orientation of the magnetic-dipole resonances, we show that the resulting quasi-BICs,emerging from the symmetry-protected BIC at normal incidence, become transparent for plane-wave illumination exactly at the magnetic-dipole angle, due to a Brewster-like effect. While yielding infinite Q-factors at normalincidence(canonical BIC), these are termed Brewster quasi-BICs since a transmission channel is always allowed that slightly widens resonances at oblique incidences. This is demonstrated experimentally through reflectance measurements in the microwave regime with high-refractive-index mm-disk metasurfaces. Such Brewster-inspired configuration is a plausible scenario to achieve quasi-BICs throughout the electromagnetic spectrum inaccessible through plane-wave illumination at given angles, which could be extrapolated to other kind of waves., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures; typos corrected, Figs. 3 & 5 modified, new Fig. 7 & references added

Fano resonances and bound states in the continuum (BICs) exhibit a rich phenomenology stemming from, respectively, their asymmetric line shapes and infinite quality factors. Here, we show experimentally and theoretically that rod dimer metasurfaces exhibit narrow (high-Q) Fano resonances at THz frequencies. These resonances evolve continuously into a BIC as the rods in each dimer become identical. We demonstrate analytically that this is a universal behavior occurring in arrays of dimers consisting of detuned resonant dipoles. Fano resonances arise as a result of the interference between broad and narrow lattice dipole resonances, with high-Q factors tending to infinity in the detuning parameter space as the narrow lattice resonance becomes a BIC for identical resonant dipoles. Similar configurations can be straightforwardly envisioned throughout the electromagnetic spectrum leading to ultrahigh-Q Fano resonances and BICs of interest in photonics applications such as sensing and lasing., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

One of the fundamental goals of modern astrophysics is to estimate the physical parameters of galaxies. We present a hierarchical Bayesian model to compute age maps from images in the \Ha\ line (taken with Taurus Tunable Filter, TTF), ultraviolet band (GALEX far UV, FUV), and infrared bands (Spitzer 24, 70, and 160 $\mu$m). We present the burst ages for young stellar populations in a sample of nearby and nearly face-on galaxies. The \Ha\ to FUV flux ratio is a good relative indicator of the very recent star formation history (SFH). As a nascent star-forming region evolves, the \Ha\ line emission declines earlier than the UV continuum, leading to a decrease in the \Ha/FUV ratio. Using star-forming galaxy models, sampled with a probabilistic formalism, and allowing for a variable fraction of ionizing photons in the clusters, we obtain the corresponding theoretical ratio \Ha/FUV to compare with our observed flux ratios, and thus to estimate the ages of the observed regions. We take into account the mean uncertainties and the interrelationships between parameters when computing \Ha/FUV. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model where a joint probability distribution is defined to determine the parameters (age, metallicity, IMF) from the observed data (the observed flux ratios \Ha/FUV). The joint distribution of the parameters is described through independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables generated through MCMC (Markov Chain Monte Carlo) techniques., Comment: 31 pages; 25 figures

In recent years, extraordinary spin angular momenta have been investigated in a variety of structured electromagnetic waves, being of especial interest in sub-wavelength evanescent fields. Here we demonstrate analytically that, in planar and cylindrical waveguides supporting transverse electric/magnetic modes, transverse spin density arises inside the waveguide (different from the spin induced in the evanescent region outside the waveguide), carrying indeed longitudinal extraordinary (so-called) Belinfante's spin momentum. Such contribution depends linearly on the mode transverse wave vector, and is thus induced by mode confinement. Cylindrical waveguides support in addition hybrid modes that exhibit a richer phenomenology with not only azimuthal (confinement-related) spin, but also an intrinsic helicity which leads to longitudinal spin density and transverse helicity-dependent spin momentum. Results are indeed presented for configurations relevant to spin-orbit coupling in nanophotonic waveguides and to manipulating optical forces in IR-to-microwave water-filled channels. Thus guided modes intrinsically carrying confinement-induced transverse spin, combined with intrinsic-helicity-induced longitudinal spin (when hybrid), hold promise of superb devices to control spin-orbit interaction and optical forces within confined geometries throughout the electromagnetic spectra.

We address the study of the \Ha\ vertical velocity field in a sample of four nearly face-on galaxies using long slit spectroscopy taken with the ISIS spectrograph attached to the WHT at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (Spain). The spatial structure of the velocity vertical component shows a radial corrugated pattern with spatial scales higher or within the order of { one} kiloparsec. The gas is mainly ionized by high-energy photons: only in some locations of NGC~278 and NGC~1058 is there some evidence of ionization by low-velocity shocks, which, in the case of NGC~278, could be due to minor mergers. The behaviour of the gas in the neighbourhood of the spiral arms fits, in the majority of the observed cases, with that predicted by the so-called hydraulic bore mechanism, where a thick magnetized disk encounters a spiral density perturbation. The results obtained show that it is { difficult to explain the \Ha\ large scale velocity field without the presence of a magnetized, thick galactic disk}. We investigate theoretically and numerically the photonic band structure in the optical domain of an array of core-shell metal-semiconductor nanowires. Corresponding negative-index photonic bands are calculated, showing isotropic equifrequency surfaces. The effective (negative) electric permittivity and magnetic permeability, retrieved from S parameters, are used to compare the performance of such nanowire arrays with homogeneous media in canonical examples, such as refraction through a prism and flat-lens focusing. Very good agreement is found, indeed confirming the effective medium behavior of the nanowire array as a low-loss, isotropic (2D) and bulk, optical negative index metamaterial. The Single Allocation Ordered Median Hub Location problem is a recent hub model introduced in Puerto et al. (2011) that provides a unifying analysis of a wide class of hub location mod- els. In this paper, we deal with the capacitated version of this problem, presenting two formulations as well as some preprocessing phases for fixing variables. In addition, a strengthening of one of these formulations is also studied through the use of some fami- lies of valid inequalities. A battery of test problems with data taken from the AP library are solved where it is shown that the running times have been significantly reduced with the improvements presented in the paper.

Two different Reverse Monte Carlo strategies, 'RMC++' and 'RMCPOW', have been compared for determining the microscopic structure of some liquid and amorphous solid systems on the basis of neutron diffraction measurements. The first, '$g(r)$ route', exploits the isotropic nature of liquids and calculates the total scattering structure factor, $S(Q)$, via a one-dimensional Fourier transform of the radial distribution function. The second, called 'crystallography' route, is based on the direct calculation of $S(Q)$ in the reciprocal space from the atomic positions in the simulation box. We describe these two methods and apply them to four disordered systems of increasing complexity. The two approaches yield structures in good agreement to the level of two- and three body correlations; consequently, it has been proven that the 'crystallography route' can also deal perfectly with disordered materials. This finding is important for future studies of liquids confined in porous media, where handling Bragg and diffuse scattering simultaneously is unavoidable.

Metamaterials are known to exhibit a variety of electromagnetic properties non-existing in nature. We show that an all-dielectric (non-magnetic) system consisting of deep subwavelength, high permittivity resonant spheres possess effective negative magnetic permeability (dielectric permittivity being positive and small). Due to the symmetry of the electromagnetic wave equations in classical electrodynamics, localized "magnetic" plasmon resonances can be excited in a metasphere made of such metamaterial. This is theoretically demonstrated by the coupled-dipole approximation and numerically for real spheres, in full agreement with the exact analytical solution for the scattering process by the same metasphere with effective material properties predicted by effective medium theory. The emergence of this phenomenon as a function of structural order within the metastructures is also studied. Universal conditions enabling effective negative magnetic permeability relate subwavelength sphere permittivity and size with critical filling fraction. An extension of the well established Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) method for modeling systems under close confinement has been developed. The method overcomes limitations induced by close confinement in systems such as fluids adsorbed in microporous materials. As a test of the method, we investigate a model system of $^{36}$Ar adsorbed into two zeolites with significantly different pore sizes: Silicalite-I (a pure silica form of ZSM-5 zeolite, characterized by relatively narrow channels forming a 3D network) at partial and full loadings and siliceous Faujasite (which exhibits relatively wide channels and large cavities). The model systems are simulated using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo and, in each case, its structure factor is used as input for the proposed method, which shows a rapid convergence and yields an adsorbate microscopic structure in good agreement with that of the model system, even to the level of three body correlations, when these are induced by the confining media. The application to experimental systems is straightforward incorporating factors such as the experimental resolution and appropriate q-sampling, along the lines of previous experiences of RMC modeling of powder diffraction data including Bragg and diffuse scattering., Comment: in press Journal of Chemical Physics

We investigate Monte Carlo simulation strategies for determining the effective ("depletion") potential between a pair of hard spheres immersed in a dense sea of much smaller hard spheres. Two routes to the depletion potential are considered. The first is based on estimates of the insertion probability of one big sphere in the presence of the other; we describe and compare three such methods. The second route exploits collective (cluster) updating to sample the depletion potential as a function of the separation of the big particles; we describe two such methods. For both routes we find that the sampling efficiency at high densities of small particles can be enhanced considerably by exploiting `geometrical shortcuts' that focus the computational effort on a subset of small particles. Metallic nanowires (NW) coated with a high permittivity dielectric are proposed as means to strongly reduce the light scattering of the conducting NW, rendering them transparent at infrared wavelengths of interest in telecommunications. Based on a simple, universal law derived from electrostatics arguments, we find appropriate parameters to reduce the scattering efficiency of hybrid metal-dielectric NW by up to three orders of magnitude as compared with the scattering efficiency of the homogeneous metallic NW. We show that metal@dielectric structures are much more robust against fabrication imperfections than analogous dielectric@metal ones. The bandwidth of the transparent region entirely covers the near IR telecommunications range. Although this effect is optimum at normal incidence and for a given polarization, rigorous theoretical and numerical calculations reveal that transparency is robust against changes in polarization and angle of incidence, and also holds for relatively dense periodic or random arrangements. A wealth of applications based on metal-NWs may benefit from such invisibility.

In the past few years, many of the fascinating and previously almost unconceivable properties predicted for those novel, artificial, man-made materials, so called metamaterials, were demonstrated to be not only a tangible reality, but a very useful one. However, plenty of the best achievements in that newly discovered field are far from having a direct translation to the, in many aspects more interesting, high frequency range, without being burdened not only by technological difficulties, but also conceptual ones. Of particular importance within the realm of optical metamaterials having a negative index of refraction, often designated negative-index metamaterials (NIM), is the issue of simultaneously achieving a strong response of the system and low associated losses. In the present work, we demonstrate the possibility to use hybrid metal-semiconductor nanowires to obtain an isotropic optical NIM, with very strong electric and magnetic responses, which exhibits extremely low losses (about two orders of magnitude better than present optical NIMs)., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

Single metallic nanorods acting as half-wave antennas in the optical range exhibit an asymmetric, multi-resonant scattering spectrum that strongly depends on both their length and dielectric properties. Here we show that such spectral features can be easily understood in terms of Fano-like interference between adjacent plasmon resonances. On the basis of analytical and numerical results for different geometries, we demonstrate that Fano resonances may appear for such single-particle nanoantennas provided that interacting resonances overlap in both spatial and frequency domains., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures
