Abstract

Lean manufacturing (LM) applies different tools that help to eliminate waste as well as the operations that do not add value to the product or processes to increase the value of each performed activity. Here the main motivation is to study how quantitative modelling approaches can support LM tools even under system and environment uncertainties. The main contributions of the article are: (i) providing a systematic literature review of 99 works related to the modelling of uncertainty in LM environments; (ii) proposing a methodology to classify the reviewed works; (iii) classifying LM works under uncertainty; and (iv) identify quantitative models and their solution to deal with uncertainty in LM environments by identifying the main variables involved. Hence this article provides a conceptual framework for future LM quantitative modelling under uncertainty as a guide for academics, researchers and industrial practitioners. The main findings identify that LM under uncertainty has been empirically investigated mainly in the US, India and the UK in the automotive and aerospace manufacturing sectors using analytical and simulation models to minimise time and cost. Value stream mapping (VSM) and just in time (JIT) are the most used LM techniques to reduce waste in a context of system uncertainty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Operations management researchers and practitioners have shown increasing interest in incorporating sustainability into supply chain (SC) design models. This means that sustainability must be considered in all aspects of the SC, including location, inventory and transportation (LIT) decisions. Hence the aim of this article is to propose an optimisation model that incorporates: (i) LIT decisions in an integrated manner; (ii) the three sustainability (3S) aspects, i.e. economic, environmental and social, into each named decisions; and (iii) a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) structure. The proposed formulation is a multi-objective mixed integer non-linear programming (MO-MINLP) model whose objectives consider minimisation of economic and social costs (economic aspect) and carbon emissions (environmental aspect), and maximisation of the social impact of SC operations (social aspect). A transformation technique is applied to one of the objective functions, which results in an MO-MILP model solved by the lexicographic method. This article focuses on commodity industries where only one finished product is manufactured. Hence the 3S-LIT model is validated with a randomly generated dataset and against a recently published alternative model applied to the copper mining industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper addresses the problem of designing a supply chain (SC) according to sustainability aspects. It identifies a research gap where an optimisation model to address the location, inventory and transportation decision in a sustainable SC applied to a copper mining industry by complementarily using a simulation model to assess SC performance in different scenarios is needed. For this purpose, we propose a simulation model based on system dynamics (SD) to assess SC performance and to support decision making. The basis of the simulation model structure is a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model that aims to minimise total economic, emissions and social costs, and to also contemplate social impacts. We consider a real copper mining industry problem to illustrate this. We obtain a solution using a mathematical programming model and a simulation model. The optimisation results show improved SC performance in cost and emission reduction terms, and an improved social impact. The simulation model presents a near-optimal result and allows the possibility of anticipating adverse scenarios. Future research is oriented to other real-world applications, and to: consider alternative inventory policies; contemplate a stochastic approach; add new production and routing decisions; develop a hybrid multi-agent SD model.

Abstract

The teaching case is shown in the 18th annual International Technology, Education and Development Conference held in Valencia (Spain) on the 4th, 5th and 6th March 2024., Typical organisational goals promoted by knowledge management (KM) are being complemented with resilience-related objectives in many organisations worldwide. The need for resilience goes beyond companies, reaching their supply chains in a concept known as enterprise and supply chain resilience (ESCR). In complex times where organisations must learn to deal with disruptive events (DEs), ranging from internal events like inventory stockouts to external events, such as pandemics and wars, knowledge sharing becomes critical. Presenting a teaching case (TC) developed using instructional design principles, which aims to teach ESCR in real-world scenarios, is the main objective of this work. The proposed TC has clear goals, objectives, and learning outcomes, it intends to engage the students in situations that require problem-solving and decision-making. It is an open problem case with multiple perspectives where solutions can vary since DEs are difficult to predict and manage. The case includes detailed context information for the reader to understand and diagnose the situation and, after that, develop and create an action plan and a logic model to solve the problems related to the critical elements of the case. The TC presents a real-life situation, through the present dataset, where an organisation and its supply chain are facing a critical incident, an impactful DE, which is causing severe problems to the flow of products between customers and suppliers. This case has no unique answer, and the solutions require critical thinking.
