We investigated assessments of calorie production and energy efficiencies of phytoplankton in Gwangyang, Jaran, and Geoje-Hansan bays in southern Korea, based on seasonal field measurements data for particulate organic carbon (POC), macromolecular compositions, calorie contents, and primary production. Our findings revealed that Geoje-Hansan Bay consistently exhibits higher POC concentrations compared to Gwangyang and Jaran bays, except during the summer season. The observed seasonal variations in POC concentrations and primary productions indicated distinct factors influencing POC distribution among the bays, which varies with the seasons. Macromolecular compositions displayed notable patterns, with Gwangyang Bay exhibiting pronounced seasonal variations, Jaran and Geoje-Hansan bays showing stable carbohydrate (CHO) dominance, and Gwangyang Bay displaying protein (PRT) dominance influenced by river-borne nutrients. Analysis of calorie content revealed that Geoje-Hansan Bay exhibited the highest calorie content, suggesting a more favorable physiological state of phytoplankton compared to Gwangyang and Jaran bays. Estimations of annual primary production and calorie production demonstrated regional variations, with Geoje-Hansan Bay having the highest values followed by Jaran Bay and Gwangyang Bay. These differences in primary production and calorie production reflect the diverse ecological conditions and nutrient availability specific to each bay. Interestingly, Gwangyang Bay demonstrated the highest energy efficiency, producing more calories per unit of carbon compared to the other two bays, potentially due to the influence of different dominant phytoplankton communities. This study enhances our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and ecological characteristics among the three bays, emphasizing the importance of considering seasonal variations and specific bay characteristics in investigating biogeochemical processes, energy flow, and ecosystem functioning. The findings contribute valuable insights for the sustainable management of coastal ecosystems and aquaculture practices.

Extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTCL-NT) is the most common subtype of Epstein-Barr virus-associated NK/T-cell lymphomas. ENKTCL-NT occurs infrequently in the gastrointestinal tract. In particular, reports of ENKTCL-on NT arising from the stomach are extremely rare. Several clusters of differentiation (CDs) have been useful in recognizing NK-cells, T-cells, and tumor cells of NK/T-cell lymphomas. Among them, the CD56 antigen is considered the most sensitive marker for ENKTCL-NT and is expressed in almost all cases of ENKTCL-NT. Thus, the development of CD56-negative ENKTCL-NT is highly atypical. This paper reports a case of a young Asian female who presented with gastric ulcer bleeding. The patient was histologically diagnosed with ENKTCL-NT. No tumor cells for CD56 were observed, whereas no monoclonality of the T-cell receptor gamma gene rearrangement was detected in the tumor cells. The patient was scheduled for systemic chemotherapy six times and achieved complete remission. Peripheral blood-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was performed later.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease involving structural changes to the respiratory system and severe immune responses mediated by allergic cytokines and pro-inflammatory mediators. Agarum cribrosum (AC) is a kind of seaweed which contains a phlorotannin, trifuhalol A. To evaluate its anti-allergic inflammatory effect against asthma, an ovalbumin inhalation-induced mouse asthma model was used. Histologic observations proved that trifuhalol A is minimizing the lung and tracheal structure changes as well as the infiltration of eosinophils and mast cells against ovalbumin inhalation challenge. From the serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, ovalbumin-specific IgE and Th2-specific cytokines, IL-4, -5, and -13, were reduced with trifuhalol A treatment. In addition, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α concentrations in lung homogenate were also significantly reduced via trifuhalol A treatment. Taken together, trifuhalol A, isolated from AC, was able to protect lung and airways from Th2-specific cytokine release, and IgE mediated allergic inflammation as well as the attenuation of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in lung, which results in the suppression of eosinophils and the mast cells involved asthmatic pathology.

Abstract This study presents a deep learning-based monitoring system for estimating extrusion angles in the manufacturing process of microcatheter tubes. Given the critical nature of these tubes, which are directly inserted into the human body, strict quality control is imperative. To mitigate potential quality variations stemming from operator actions, a system utilizing a convolutional neural network to precisely measure the extrusion angle—a parameter with profound implications for tube quality—is developed. Until now, there has been no method to estimate the extrusion angle of resin being extruded in real-time. In this study, for the first time, a method using deep learning to estimate the angle was proposed. This innovative system comprises two RGB cameras capturing both front and side perspectives. The acquired images undergo segmentation via a meticulously trained convolutional neural network. Subsequently, the extrusion angle is accurately estimated through the application of principal component analysis on the segmented image. The usefulness of the proposed system was rigorously confirmed through comprehensive validation measures, including mean intersection over union (mIoU), mean absolute angle error (MAE), and inference time, using a real-world dataset. The attained metrics, with an mIoU of 0.8848, MAE of 0.5968, and an inference time of 0.0546, unequivocally affirm the system’s suitability for enhancing the catheter tube extrusion process.

Abstract Various allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis (AD), allergic rhinitis, and asthma are considered incurable conditions that have yet to be fully conquered. Paedoksan (PDS), an herbal preparation consisting of 14 medicines, displays effective anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, yet its underlying molecular mechanism is unknown. This study aims to uncover PDS’s mechanism for treating allergic diseases and suggest its therapeutic potential. Through a network pharmacological prediction, its impact on signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) regulation, a sub-mechanism of interleukin 4 (IL-4), a major inflammatory cytokine involved in degranulation and allergy, was investigated in RBL-2H3 cells and an atopic mouse model. PDS inhibits immunoglobulin E (IgE)-induced degranulation and STAT6 phosphorylation evoked by IL-4 in granulocytes. The downregulation of phospho-STAT6 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) by PDS was confirmed in 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced mouse skin. The results demonstrate that PDS exhibited remarkable effects on degranulation and STAT6 phosphorylation in RBL-2H3 cells, as well as in an atopic mouse model. Furthermore, the main active components from PDS based on chromatographic analysis showed good accordance with PDS’s effects on RBL-2H3 cells. In summary, these findings collectively suggest that PDS holds the potential to effectively suppress inflammatory and allergic reactions by obstructing the target IL-4 protein and its downstream effects, as elucidated through a network pharmacological analysis.

Abstract Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has abundant mitochondria with the unique capability of generating heat via uncoupled respiration. Mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is activated in BAT during cold stress and dissipates mitochondrial proton motive force generated by the electron transport chain to generate heat. However, other mitochondrial factors required for brown adipocyte respiration and thermogenesis under cold stress are largely unknown. Here, we show LETM1 domain-containing protein 1 (LETMD1) is a BAT-enriched and cold-induced protein required for cold-stimulated respiration and thermogenesis of BAT. Proximity labeling studies reveal that LETMD1 is a mitochondrial matrix protein. Letmd1 knockout male mice display aberrant BAT mitochondria and fail to carry out adaptive thermogenesis under cold stress. Letmd1 knockout BAT is deficient in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complex proteins and has impaired mitochondrial respiration. In addition, BAT-specific Letmd1 deficient mice exhibit phenotypes identical to those observed in Letmd1 knockout mice. Collectively, we demonstrate that the BAT-enriched mitochondrial matrix protein LETMD1 plays a tissue-autonomous role that is essential for BAT mitochondrial function and thermogenesis.

Plexiform neurofibroma (PN) is an uncommon benign tumor, usually associated with neurofibromatosis type 1. As most PNs involve the craniomaxillofacial region, PN of the colon is very rare. Here we present a case of PN involving the sigmoid colon. A 43-year-old male patient presented to the outpatient clinic for the evaluation of an incidentally discovered sigmoid colon mass. A colonoscopic biopsy was performed for the mass, and the result revealed neuronal proliferation. The patient visited the outpatient clinic a year later with symptoms of abdominal pain and stool caliber change. Biopsy was repeated for the sigmoid colon mass, and the results showed mucosal Schwann cell proliferation and S-100 immunostaining positivity. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were performed for further evaluation, and neurofibroma or schwannoma was suspected based on the imaging studies. For an accurate diagnosis, the patient underwent surgery to remove the sigmoid colon mass. The final diagnosis of the mass was confirmed as PN. We hereby report a rare case of PN involving the sigmoid colon that could not be diagnosed before surgery.

Background and Objectives: Lateral ankle injuries are commonly encountered injuries, and the open modified Broström operation (OMBO) is the primary treatment option. Recently, an arthroscopic modification of the Broström operation (AMBO) was developed; many studies have shown that there are no significant differences in clinical and radiological outcomes between the two surgical methods. However, no studies have been conducted comparing the two surgical methods in terms of return to play (RTP) time. This study assesses the time to RTP and the functional clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients were enrolled from January 2012 to July 2014. They were segregated into two cohorts: the AMBO group comprised 30 patients, while the OMBO group comprised another 30 patients. Each participant underwent standardized treatment and rehabilitation regimens and RTP time was measured using seven questions that explored the times to return of painless walking, running, jumping, squatting, climbing stairs, and rising up on the heels and toes. We compared the time intervals from the onset of instability to the date of surgery. Clinical outcomes were evaluated before the surgery, 6 weeks after surgery, and 6 months after surgery. The assessments included the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle–hindfoot score, the pain visual analog scale (VAS) score, subjective satisfaction with rehabilitation, and activity level. Results: In terms of RTP, AMBO was associated with a shorter interval to walking without pain (7.07 ± 2.96 weeks) relative to OMBO (11.03 ± 8.58 weeks). No disparities were observed in the time to return to play (RTP) between OMBO and AMBO. While there were no discrepancies in the 6-month postoperative AOFAS or VAS scores, the 6-week postoperative VAS score was notably lower in the AMBO group compared to the OMBO group. AMBO provided a faster RTP in terms of two of the seven questions in a group exhibiting high-level physical activity. The rate of subjective satisfaction with rehabilitation was higher for AMBO than for OMBO. Conclusions: Aside from walking, the duration to return to play and the clinical outcomes were similar between AMBO and OMBO treatments for lateral ankle instability. AMBO is a good treatment option and should be carefully considered for athletes with lateral ankle instability. AMBO demonstrated positive outcomes in a group with higher activity levels compared to others, particularly in terms of time to RTP, subjective satisfaction, and postoperative pain.

Background and objectives: Diabetic foot stands out as one of the most consequential and devastating complications of diabetes. Many factors, including VIPS (Vascular management, Infection management, Pressure relief, and Source of healing), influence the prognosis and treatment of diabetic foot patients. There are many studies on VIPS, but relatively few studies on “sources of healing”. Nutrients that affect wound healing are known, but objective data in diabetic foot patients are insufficient. We hypothesized that “sources of healing” would have many effects on wound healing. The purpose of this study is to know the affecting factors related to the source of healing for diabetic foot patients. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review identified 46 consecutive patients who were admitted for diabetic foot management from July 2019 to April 2021 at our department. Several laboratory tests were performed for influencing factor evaluation. We checked serum levels of total protein, albumin, vitamin B, iron, zinc, magnesium, copper, Hb, HbA1c, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol. These values of diabetic foot patients were compared with normal values. Patients were divided into two groups based on wound healing rate, age, length of hospital stay, and sex, and the test values between the groups were compared. Results: Levels of albumin (37%) and Hb (89%) were low in the diabetic foot patients. As for trace elements, levels of iron (97%) and zinc (95%) were low in the patients, but levels of magnesium and copper were usually normal or high. There were no differences in demographic characteristics based on wound healing rate. However, when compared to normal adult values, diabetic foot patients in our data exhibited significantly lower levels of hemoglobin, total protein, albumin, iron, zinc, copper, and HDL cholesterol. When compared based on age and length of hospital stay, hemoglobin levels were significantly lower in both the older age group and the group with longer hospital stays. Conclusions: Serum levels of albumin, Hb, iron, and zinc were very low in most diabetic foot patients. These low values may have a negative relationship with wound healing. Nutrient replacements are necessary for wound healing in diabetic foot patients.

Soft tissue calcifications frequently appear on imaging studies, representing a prevalent but non-specific discovery, varying from a local reaction without clear cause to suggesting an underlying systemic condition. Because calcifications like these can arise from various causes, an accurate differential diagnosis is crucial. Differential diagnosis entails a methodical assessment of the patient, encompassing clinical presentation, medical history, radiological and pathological findings, and other pertinent factors. Through scrutiny of the patient’s medical and trauma history, we can refine potential causes of calcification to vascular, metabolic, autoimmune, neoplastic, or traumatic origins. Furthermore, routine laboratory assessments, including serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, ionized calcium, vitamin D metabolites, and parathyroid hormone (PTH), aid in identifying metabolic etiologies. We describe a rare occurrence of osteoma cutis in a 15-year-old female patient with a history of pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) and Albright’s hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO). The patient presented with a painful mass on the lateral side of her left foot. The diagnosis was based on medical history, laboratory tests, and imaging, leading to an excisional biopsy and complete pain relief post-surgery. Understanding such rare occurrences and related conditions is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.

Gastric wall abscess, a localized form of phlegmonous gastritis, is a rare complication of endoscopic resection. We report the first case of gastric wall abscess developing after endoscopic submucosal dissection in Korea. A 72-year-old woman visited our clinic to receive treatment for gastric adenoma. The patient successfully underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection with no complications. The final diagnosis was well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma. We performed follow-up endoscopy 10 weeks later and found a large subepithelial lesion on the posterior wall of the gastric antrum. Abdominal computed tomography revealed hypodense wall thickening and a 5 cm heterogenous multilobular mass in the submucosal layer of the gastric antrum. Submucosal invasion with mucin-producing adenocarcinomas could therefore not be excluded. The patient agreed to undergo additional gastrectomy due to the possibility of a highly malignant lesion. The final diagnosis was acute suppurative inflammation with the formation of multiple abscesses in the mural layers and omentum. The patient was discharged with no complications.

Background Benign esophageal strictures are treated endoscopically, often with balloon dilatation (BD) or bougie dilators. However, recurrent esophageal strictures have been reported after BD, and severe complications sometimes occur. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and complications of endoscopic incisional therapy (EIT) and BD for benign esophageal strictures. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent BD or EIT as primary treatment for benign esophageal strictures between July 2014 and June 2021. Ice algae thriving within sea ice play a crucial role in transferring energy to higher trophic levels and influencing biogeochemical processes in polar oceans; however, the distribution of organic matter within the ice interior is not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the vertical distribution of organic matter, including chlorophyll a (Chl-a), particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC and PON), carbohydrates (CHO), proteins (PRT), lipids (LIP), and food material (FM), within the sea ice. Samples were collected from the bottom, middle, and top sections of the sea ice column near Cambridge Bay during the spring of 2018. Based on the δ13C signature, biochemical composition, and POC contribution of biopolymeric carbon (BPC), the organic substances within the sea ice were predominantly attributed to marine autotrophs. While the highest concentrations of each parameter were observed at the sea ice bottom, notable concentrations were also found in the upper sections. The average sea ice column-integrated Chl-a concentration was 5.05 ± 2.26 mg m−2, with the bottom ice section contributing 59% (S.D. = ± 10%) to the total integration. The column-integrated concentrations of FM, BPC, POC, and PON were 2.05 ± 0.39, 1.10 ± 0.20, 1.47 ± 0.25, and 0.09 ± 0.03 g m−2, respectively. Contributions of the bottom ice section to these column-integrated concentrations varied for each parameter, with values of 20 ± 6, 21 ± 7, 19 ± 5, and 28 ± 7%, respectively. While the bottom ice section exhibited a substantial Chl-a contribution in line with previous studies, significantly higher contributions of the other parameters were observed in the upper sea ice sections. This suggests that the particulate matter within the interior of the sea ice could potentially serve as an additional food source for higher trophic grazers or act as a seeding material for a phytoplankton bloom during the ice melting season. Our findings highlight the importance of comprehensive field measurements encompassing the entire sea ice section to better understand the distribution of organic carbon pools within the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean.

Summary: Purpose: 45% of colon cancer patients are elderly, yet they are often deviated from standard cancer management. The MOSAIC trial favored FOLFOX over FL with superior oncologic outcomes; however, which regimen is most beneficial in elderly population remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of oxaliplatin-added chemotherapy and capecitabine monotherapy in high-risk stage II/stage III elderly colon cancer patients. Methods: Colon cancer patients ≥70 years of age who received adjuvant chemotherapy at Inje University Busan Paik Hospital between February 2009 to April 2016 were included. Patients were separated into the oxaliplatin-added group and capecitabine monotherapy group. The primary outcomes were CSS and OS. Results: Of 74 patients, 45 received oxaliplatin-added chemotherapy and 29 received capecitabine monotherapy. There was no difference between the two groups in CSS or OS (p = 0.9670 and p = 0.6801, respectively). The N stage was significantly associated with CSS in both uni/multivariate analysis (p = 0.0565 and p = 0.0347, respectively). The oxaliplatin-added group had more stage III patients, so we performed a subgroup analysis of CSS and OS based on stage, which also showed no significant difference. Conclusions: Capecitabine monotherapy is an oncologically safe regimen compared to oxaliplatin-added regimens in elderly patients with high-risk stage II/stage III colon cancer.

The carbon nanotube (CNT) field emitter was fabricated using a thin free-standing CNT film, indicating a line-shape CNT field emitter. Field emission properties of the CNT field emitter were investigated in both diode and triode configurations. The CNT field emitter showed a low turn-on electric field of 1.8 V/ $\mu$ m and a high emission current of 40.3 mA, corresponding to the emission current density of 96 A/cm2 in the diode configuration. It also exhibited a high anode current of 40 mA, corresponding to the anode current density of 95.2 A/cm2 in the triode configuration. In addition, the CNT field emitter showed a good electron beam transmittance of 86.4% and excellent emission stability without degradation for 15 h. The main reason for the high performance of our CNT field emitter is caused by the high density of emission sites at the edge of the CNT film.

Background/Aims: This multicenter study reviewed the clinical features and prognosis according to the primary site of involvement and the treatment modality in patients with B-cell primary intestinal lymphoma (PIL). Methods: Among 125 consecutive patients diagnosed with PIL, 100 patients were analyzed. Results: The median age was 59 years, and the male to female ratio was 1.86:1. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (66/100, 66.0%) was the most common histological subtype. The estimated 5-year survival rate (5-YSR) was 48.5%. The 5-YSR was similar regardless of the type of primary treatment (chemotherapy alone vs. surgery/chemotherapy, 50.7 vs. 45.3%, p=0.582). A comparison of the survival according to the primary site of involvement revealed a 5-YSR of 32.5% (p=0.027), 64.3% (reference), 46.5% (p=0.113), and 49.8% (p=0.024) for the small intestine, ileocecal region, large intestine, and multiple sites, respectively. Multivariate analysis, however, revealed a low hemoglobin level, advanced Ann Arbor stage, and aggressive histological type to be independent prognostic factors for shorter survival but not ileocecal region involvement. Conclusions: The Ann Arbor stage, hemoglobin level, and histological type were independent prognostic factors for survival, while the primary site of involvement and treatment modality did not affect the prognosis in patients with B-cell PIL.

The spatial and temporal environmental conditions in the southern coastal waters of Korea (SCWK) as a complex area, which is influenced by both ocean currents and anthropogenic nutrient inputs, are highly variable. The impacts of environmental factors on the distribution of phytoplankton community structure in the SCWK remain unclear. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of a variety of photosynthetic pigments, spatial and temporal variations in phytoplankton community compositions were investigated in the SCWK. Cluster analysis, correlation analysis, and generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to explore the major phytoplankton groups and their response patterns to temperature, salinity, depth, and macronutrients. The results indicated that diatoms were the absolute dominant groups in the SCWK for all seasons, especially in cold seasons. Diatoms mainly concentrated at 1% light depths, while high chlorophyll-a concentrations (>3 µg/L) occurred at 100% and 30% light depths with good light conditions. Both clustering and correlation analyses showed that diatoms had a strong positive correlation with macronutrients such as dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP), and dissolved silica (DSi). The temperature and salinity discrepancy between surface and bottom layers in summer caused a strong water stratification resulting in blocking nutrient-rich bottom water upwelling and leading cyanobacteria to become the dominant groups at 100% and 30% light depths in summer. Consistently, the cyanobacteria were highly associated with high temperature and low salinity in the correlation analysis and GAM results. Compared with diatom-predominant sites, cryptophytes and diatom-dominated sites are characterized by higher average excess nitrate (ExN). Further research on the responses of small-sized prokaryotic phytoplankton especially cyanobacteria to environmental variations and their primary production contributions would warrant a better understanding of the SCWK ecosystem.

The biochemical compositions of marine particulate organic matter (POM) can provide significant information to understanding the physiological conditions of phytoplankton and food quality for their potential consumers. We investigated the seasonal variations in biomolecular and amino acid (AA) compositions of the bulk POM in the southwestern East/Japan Sea from four different sampling months (February, April, August, and October) in 2018. In terms of the biomolecular composition of the POM, overall carbohydrates (CHO) were predominant among three biomolecules accounting for 48.6% followed by lipids (LIP; 35.5%) and proteins (PRT; 15.9%) in the East/Japan Sea. However, markedly seasonal differences in the biomolecular composition of POM were found from February to October, which could be due to seasonally different conditions favorable to phytoplankton growth. Dominant AA constituents to trace POM lability were glycine (GLY), alanine (ALA), and glutamic acid (GLU), suggesting that our POM was the mixtures of decomposing and fresher materials. Furthermore, the significantly negative correlation between the proportion of total essential amino acids (EAAs) and PRT composition (r = -0.627, p< 0.01) was probably reflected by nutrient availability to phytoplankton partitioning EAAs or non-essential AAs (NEAAs). The different biomolecular compounds under un- or favorable growth conditions for phytoplankton could determine the nutritional quality of POM as potential prey as well as degradation status of POM. Therefore, the biochemical compositions of phytoplankton-originated POM hold important ecological implications in various marine ecosystems under ongoing climate changes.

The physiological status of phytoplankton, used to determine the quantity and quality of basic food sources in marine ecosystems, can change rapidly due to ambient environmental conditions (e.g., light, temperature, and nutrients). To understand the physiological characteristics of phytoplankton, the phytoplankton community composition, pigment concentration, primary production, and pigment production rate were estimated at 100% and 1% light depths in the Philippine Sea during the summer of 2019. To investigate the factors affecting water quality in coastal regions with sea dike constructions, surface water outside a sea dike was monitored for six years from 2015 to 2020 in the Saemangeum region of Korea. Statistical analyses of the six years of high-frequency measurements revealed that the water quality in this system was predominantly governed by natural processes followed by pollutant inputs as the secondary influencing factor. Severe dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion was observed in the surface waters during warm periods, probably owing to the advection of DO-depleted water from elsewhere to the surface layer. Based on the apparent oxygen utilization (AOU)–pH relationship (r = 0.52, n = 1837), the maximum AOU (180 µM) led to a pH decrease from 8.04 to 7.50, which was considerably lower than the estimated value of 7.72. This extra pH drop was probably due to a reduction in the buffering capacity associated with increased CO2 in the water column originating from the atmosphere and in situ production, as well as local water column redox reactions associated with benthic inputs of reduced chemical species. Overall, persistent DO depletion with ongoing eutrophication/hypoxia could accelerate ocean acidification in Korean coastal waters, which could be more acute in coastal regions with artificial coastal constructions.

Background: The arthroscopic Broström procedure is a promising treatment for chronic ankle instability. However, little is known regarding the location of the intermediate superficial peroneal nerve at the level of the inferior extensor retinaculum; knowledge about this location is important for procedural safety. The purpose of this cadaveric study was to clarify the anatomical relationship between the intermediate superficial peroneal nerve and the sural nerve at the level of the inferior extensor retinaculum. Methods: Eleven dissections of cadaveric lower extremities were performed. The origin of the experimental three-dimensional axis was defined as the location of the anterolateral portal during ankle arthroscopy. The distances from the standard anterolateral portal to the inferior extensor retinaculum, sural nerve, and intermediate superficial peroneal nerve were measured using an electronic digital caliper. The location of inferior extensor retinaculum, the tract of sural nerve, and intermediate superficial peroneal nerve were checked using average and standard deviations. For the statistical analyses, data are presented as average ± standard deviation, and then they are reported as means and standard deviations. Fisher’s exact test was used to identify statistically significant differences. Results: At the level of the inferior extensor retinaculum, the mean distances from the anterolateral portal to the proximal and distal intermediate superficial peroneal nerve were 15.9 ± 4.1 (range, 11.3–23.0) mm and 30.1 ± 5.5 (range, 20.8–37.9) mm, respectively. The mean distances from the anterolateral portal to the proximal and distal sural nerve were 47.6 ± 5.7 (range, 37.4–57.2) mm and 47.2 ± 4.1 (range, 41.0–51.8) mm), respectively. Conclusions: During the arthroscopic Broström procedure, the intermediate superficial peroneal nerve may be damaged by the anterolateral portal; the proximal and distal parts of the intermediate superficial peroneal nerve were located within 15.9 and 30.1 mm, respectively, at the level of the inferior extensor retinaculum in cadavers. These areas should be considered danger zones during the arthroscopic Broström procedure.

The spatio-temporal distributions of the epipelagic mesozooplankton community in the western Ross Sea region marine protected area (RSR MPA) were investigated. Mesozooplankton surveys were conducted in February 2018, January 2019, and March 2020 from an approximate depth of 200 m to address the essential environmental factors influencing the mesozooplankton community structure. Our results showed that the mesozooplankton community of the western RSR MPA could be affected by the various ecological factors, depending on their temporal and spatial variations. The community structure in 2018 was distinguished by its chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration during the summer bloom phase in the late summer. Taxa observed in 2019 were divided into four significantly different groups according to the body size of the community composition. This differentiation could be derived from predation pressure, inducing a trophic cascade. Taxa in the 2020 samples were separated into five different groups based on temperature; during the 2020 survey, the water temperature was low and sea ice covered the whole continental shelf in the Ross Sea. Additionally, comparing the results from the three interannual surveys, although the communities clustered according to the survey period, the continental shelf groups were quite dissimilar despite overlapping geographically. Taken all together, the mesozooplankton community of the western RSR MPA changed according to changes in several ecological factors, such as temperature, Chl-a concentration, and predation pressure. The occurrence of summer blooms and the decline in water temperature mainly regulated the mesozooplankton community structure in the late summer.

Duodenal varices are a serious complication of portal hypertension. Bleeding from duodenal varices is rare, but when bleeding does occur, it is massive and can be fatal. Unfortunately, the optimal therapeutic modality for duodenal variceal bleeding is unclear. This paper presents a patient with duodenal variceal bleeding that was managed successfully using percutaneous trans-splenic variceal obliteration (PTVO). A 56-year-old man with a history of alcoholic cirrhosis presented with a 6-day history of melena. Emergency esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a large, bluish mass with a nipple sign in the second portion of the duodenum. Coil embolization of the duodenal varix was performed via a trans-splenic approach (i.e., PTVO). The patient no longer complained of melena after treatment. The duodenal varix was no longer visible at the follow-up esophagogastroduodenoscopy performed three months after PTVO. The use of PTVO might be a viable option for the treatment of duodenal variceal bleeding.

Our understanding of ice algal responses to the recent changes in Arctic sea ice is impeded by limited field observations. In the present study, environmental characteristics of the landfast sea-ice zone as well as primary production and macromolecular composition of ice algae and phytoplankton were studied in the Kitikmeot Sea near Cambridge Bay in spring 2017. Averaged total chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration was within the lower range reported previously for the same region, while daily carbon uptake rates of bottom-ice algae were significantly lower in this study than previously reported for the Arctic. Based on various indicators, the region's low nutrient concentrations appear to limit carbon uptake rates and associated accumulation of bottom-ice algal biomass. Furthermore, the lipids-dominant biochemical composition of bottom-ice algae suggests strong nutrient limitation relative to the distinctly different carbohydrates-dominant composition of phytoplankton. Together, the results confirm strong nitrate limitation of the local marine system.

Introduction: Clinical outcomes after the implantation of allogenic human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) in osteoarthritic knees have been rarely reported. Our study aimed to investigate clinical outcomes of osteoarthritic patients who underwent hUCB-MSC implantation. Methods: In this case series (level of evidence: 4), from January 2014 to December 2015, 128 patients with full-thickness cartilage lesions (International Cartilage Repair Society grade 4 and Kellgren–Lawrence grade ≤3) who underwent hUCB-MSC implantation were retrospectively evaluated with a minimum of 2-year follow-up. After removing the sclerotic subchondral bone with an arthroscopic burr, 4-mm-diameter holes were created at 2-mm intervals, and hyaluronic acid and hUCB-MSCs were subsequently mixed and implanted in the holes and other articular defect sites.Clinical outcomes were evaluated preoperatively, 1 year postoperatively, and 2 years postoperatively (minimum) using visual analog scale (VAS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores. To assess clinical outcomes, patients were divided into two or three groups according to the lesion size, lesion location, number of lesions, body mass index, and age; statistical analyses were performed using these data. Peptic ulcer disease is common and can be diagnosed easily if the patient has an ulcer history or characteristic abdominal symptoms. On the other hand, it may take a long time for the patient to visit the hospital due to severe complications if the patient is old or insensitive to symptoms caused by peptic ulcers. In the present case, a 72-year-old female visited the hospital due to general weakness and inadequate oral intake, which started two weeks ago. Endoscopy and abdominal CT revealed huge gastric ulcer findings. Through a tissue examination by endoscopy, hepatic cells were identified, and the patient was diagnosed with peptic ulcer perforation to the liver and later received surgical treatment.

The relative importance of interannual environmental changes in shaping phytoplankton community structure remains unclear in the East China Sea (ECS), which is the largest marginal sea in the western North Pacific Ocean. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of a variety of photosynthetic pigments, we investigated spatiotemporal variations in the phytoplankton community in the northern East China Sea (NECS) from 2018 to 2020 to understand biomass and compositional responses to environmental conditions in a complex current system. Correlation heatmaps and generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to explore the variations in major phytoplankton groups and their relationships to temperature, salinity, depth, and nutrients. The results indicated that the phytoplankton community structure was significantly different between 2018/2019 and 2020. Under the conditions of high dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and low dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) concentrations in winter 2020, cryptophytes replaced diatoms as the dominant species and were observed for the first time in this study area. Dinoflagellates predominated throughout the euphotic zone in spring 2020, and statistical analysis showed that dinoflagellates tended to prevail at low DIP and high DIN conditions compared with diatoms. Summer was the only season with strong water stratification that reoccurred every year, and diatoms were mainly concentrated at nutrient-enriched 1% light depths in the summers of 2018/2019. However, a large amount of Changjiang River Diluted Water (CDW) from the surface and western part of the study area affected all sampling sites eastward to 126°E in 2020, allowing diatoms to be dominant at 100% and 30% light depths in the westernmost stations in the NECS. In autumn 2020, diatoms decreased significantly because of DIP-limited environmental conditions and were replaced by small phytoplankton. Under expected warming ocean scenarios with human-induced nutrient inputs, small phytoplankton will become dominant, while spring dinoflagellate blooms will occur more frequently in the NECS. International monitoring programs for marine ecosystems are currently needed in the ECS.

Primary malignant melanoma (PMM) of the gastrointestinal tract is rare. Reported cases of PMM of the lower gastrointestinal tract typically describe anal and rectal involvement rather than colonic lesions. This report describes a rare case of a 50-year-old woman with PMM originating in the colon. The patient presented to Inje University Busan Paik Hospital with a 3-day history of blood-tinged stools. She underwent colonoscopy for a diagnosis of hematochezia. The colonoscopic examination revealed a large-sized semi-pedunculated sigmoid colon polyp with a reddish-colored mucosal surface. Endoscopic mucosal resection was performed, and the final histopathological findings were consistent with a diagnosis of malignant melanoma. Systemic work-up was performed for assessment of metastasis and to identify the primary tumor considering the high metastatic rate of gastrointestinal malignant melanoma; however, no other malignant lesion was detected. Thus, she was diagnosed with colonic PMM. She underwent laparoscopic low anterior resection and lymph node dissection and has been recurrence-free for > 2 years.

Phytoplankton size classes (hereafter, PSCs) were derived from satellite ocean color data using a present phytoplankton abundance-based optical algorithm in the northern Bering and southern Chukchi Seas to characterize the spatial and seasonal variations of the different PSC and investigate the contributions of small phytoplankton to the total phytoplankton biomass. The comparison results showed that the phytoplankton abundance-based method approach could reasonably classify the three PSCs (pico-, nano-, and micro phytoplankton). The satellite maps of the dominant PSCs were derived using long-term satellite ocean color data. The general spatial distribution showed that the large (micro-) phytoplankton were dominant in the coastal waters and the west side of the Bering strait, while the small size (nano- or pico-) phytoplankton were dominant in the open ocean waters. Nano- and microphytoplankton were dominant in May and October in most of the study area, while pico-phytoplankton were dominant in the summer months in the open ocean waters. The annual variation in small phytoplankton dominance had a strong positive relationship with the annual mean sea surface temperature (SST), which is consistent with the increasing dominance of small phytoplankton biomass as water temperature increases. Microphytoplankton have an apparent increasing trend in the southeastern Chukchi Sea but slightly decreasing trends in Chirikov and St. Lawrence Island Polynya (SLIP). In contrast, there were increasing trends in picophytoplankton in Chirikov and SLIP, which seems to be related to increasing annual SST. It is crucial to monitor changes in dominant groups of phytoplankton community in the Bering and Chukchi Seas as important biological hotspots responding to the recent changes in environmental conditions.

The Japanese sea lion, Zalophus japonicus, is an extinct pinniped species, which had inhabited along the coast of the Japanese archipelago and Korean peninsula. Its mitochondrial genome was determined by the assembly of PCR amplicons from the skeletal remains excavated from the Ulleungdo, South Korea. The whole mitogenome was 16,698 bp in length, which encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNA), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNA), an origin of light-strand replication (OL), and a control region (D-loop). Unusual start codons were identified in ND2 (ATA), ND3 (ATA), and ND5 (ATC), while COIII, ND3, and ND4 were terminated with an incomplete stop codon (T–/TA-). Phylogenetic analysis showed that Z. japonicus was a sister species to Z. californianus with 98.61% nucleotide sequence identity among 11 pinniped species in the infraorder Pinnipedia, which supported the previous results. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Z. japonicus would be valuable information for its restoration and the evolutional understandings of pinniped species in the Pacific Ocean.

Graphite nanoplatelet (GNP) paste field emitters fabricated using all-carbon-based materials, such as GNPs, graphite nanoparticles, graphite binders, and a graphite rod substrate have been demonstrated. The GNP field emitters on the graphite rod substrate showed an emission current density of 84.3 mA/cm2 and good emission stability with a degradation rate of less than 10%, indicating higher emission performance than other GNP field emitters. The enhanced field emission performance of the GNP field emitter is attributed to a low work function barrier between carbon materials, low contact resistance between GNPs and the graphite rod substrate, and good GNP paste bulk electrical conductivity. The new approach to fabricate GNP field emitters using all-carbon-based materials can be useful for various field emission devices.

Organic carbon fixed by photosynthesis of phytoplankton during the polar growing period could be important for their survival and consumers during the long polar night. Differences in biochemical traits of phytoplankton between ice-free and polar night periods were investigated in biweekly water samples obtained at the Korean “Jang Bogo Station” located in Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica. The average concentration of total Chl-a from phytoplankton dominated by micro-sized species from the entire sampling period was 0.32 μg L–1 (SD = ± 0.88 μg L–1), with the highest concentration of 4.29 μg L–1 in February and the lowest concentration of 0.01 μg L–1 during the ice-covered polar night (April–October) in 2015. The highest protein concentration coincided with the peak Chl-a concentration in February and decreased rapidly relative to the carbohydrate and lipid concentrations in the early part of polar night. Among the different biochemical components, carbohydrates were the predominant constituent, accounting for 69% (SD = ± 14%) of the total particulate organic matter (POM) during the entire study period. The carbohydrate contributions to the total POM markedly increased from 39 ± 8% during the ice-free period to 73 ± 9% during the polar night period. In comparison, while we found a significant negative correlation (r2 = 0.92, p < 0.01) between protein contributions and carbohydrate contributions, lipid contributions did not show any particular trend with relatively small temporal variations during the entire observation period. The substantial decrease in the average weight ratio of proteins to carbohydrates from the ice-free period (mean ± SD = 1.0 ± 0.3) to the ice-covered period (mean ± SD = 0.1 ± 0.1) indicates a preferential loss of nitrogen-based proteins compared to carbohydrates during the polar night period. Overall, the average food material (FM) concentration and calorific contents of FM in this study were within the range reported previously from the Southern Ocean. The results from this study may serve as important background data for long-term monitoring of the regional and interannual variations in the physiological state and biochemical compositions of phytoplankton resulting from future climate change in Antarctica.

Marine particulate organic matter (POM) largely derived from phytoplankton is a primary food source for upper trophic consumers. Their biochemical compositions are important for heterotrophs. Especially, essential amino acids (EAAs) in phytoplankton are well known to have impacts on the survival and egg productions of herbivorous zooplankton. To estimate the nutritional quality of POM, the biochemical compositions [biomolecular and amino acid (AA) compositions] of POM were investigated in the northwestern Ross Sea during the late austral summer in 2018. Carbohydrates (CHO) accounted for the highest portion among different biomolecules [CHO, proteins (PRT), and lipids (LIP)] of POM. However, the higher contribution of PRT and lower contribution of CHO were observed in the southern section of our study area compared to those in the northern section. The spatial distribution of total hydrolyzable AAs in POM was considerably influenced by phytoplankton biomass, which indicates that the main source of particulate AA was generated by phytoplankton. Our results showed that the relative contribution of EAA to the total AAs was strongly associated with EAA index (EAAI) for determining protein quality. This result indicates that higher EAA contribution in POM suggests a better protein quality in consistency with high EAAI values. In this study, variations in the biochemical compositions in POM were principally determined by two different bloom-forming taxa (diatoms and Phaeocystis antarctica). The southern region dominated majorly by diatoms was positively correlated with PRT, EAA, and EAAI indicating a good protein quality, while P. antarctica-abundant northern region with higher CHO contribution was negatively correlated with good protein quality factors. Climate-driven environmental changes could alter not only the phytoplankton community but also the physiological conditions of phytoplankton. Our findings could provide a better understanding for future climate-induced changes in the biochemical compositions of phytoplankton and consequently their potential impacts on higher trophic levels.

The current phytoplankton community structure is expected to change, with small phytoplankton becoming dominant under ongoing warming conditions. To understand and evaluate the ecological roles of small phytoplankton in terms of food quantity and quality, the carbon uptake rates and intracellular biochemical compositions (i.e., carbohydrates, CHO; proteins, PRT; and lipids, LIP) of phytoplankton of different sizes were analyzed and compared in two different regions of the western East/Japan Sea (EJS): the Ulleung Basin (UB) and northwestern East/Japan Sea (NES). The average carbon uptake rate by the whole phytoplankton community in the UB (79.0 ± 12.2 mg C m–2 h–1) was approximately two times higher than that in the NES (40.7 ± 2.2 mg C m–2 h–1), although the average chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration was similar between the UB (31.0 ± 8.4 mg chl a m–2) and NES (28.4 ± 7.9 mg chl a m–2). The main reasons for the large difference in the carbon uptake rates are believed to be water temperature, which affects metabolic activity and growth rate, and the difference in euphotic depths. The contributions of small phytoplankton to the total carbon uptake rate were not significantly different between the regions studied. However, the rate of decrease in the total carbon uptake with increasing contributions from small phytoplankton was substantially higher in the UB than in the NES. This result suggests that compared to other regions in the EJS, the primary production in the UB could decrease rapidly under ongoing climate change. The calorific contents calculated based on biochemical compositions were similar between the small (1.01 ± 0.33 Kcal m–3) and large (1.14 ± 0.36 Kcal m–3) phytoplankton in the UB, whereas the biochemical contents were higher in the large phytoplankton (1.88 ± 0.54 Kcal m–3) than in the small phytoplankton (1.06 ± 0.18 Kcal m–3) in the NES. The calorific values per unit of chl a were higher for the large phytoplankton than for the small phytoplankton in both regions, which suggests that large phytoplankton could provide a more energy efficient food source to organisms in higher trophic levels in the western EJS.

Amyloidosis is defined as the extracellular deposition of non-branching fibrils composed of a variety of serum-protein precursors. Secondary amyloidosis is associated with several chronic inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatologic or intestinal diseases, familial Mediterranean fever, or chronic infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis. Although the association of amyloidosis with inflammatory bowel disease is known, amyloidosis secondary to ulcerative colitis (UC) is rare. A 36-year-old male patient with a 15-year history of UC presented with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. He had been treated with infliximab for 6 years. At the time of admission, he had been undergoing treatment with mesalazine and adalimumab since the preceding 5 months. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed mucosal erythema, edema, and erosions with geographic ulcers at the 2nd and 3rd portions of the duodenum. Duodenal amyloidosis was diagnosed using polarized light microscopy and Congo red stain. Monoclonal gammopathy was not detected in serum and urine tests, while the serum free light chain assay result was not specific. An increase in plasma cells in the bone marrow was not found. Secondary amyloidosis due to UC was suspected. The symptoms were resolved after glucocorticoid therapy.

Purpose To evaluate changes in quality of life (QoL) in patients with neurogenic bladder treated with clean intermittent catheterization (CIC), who changed from a multiple use catheter (MUC) to single use catheter (SUC). Methods The Modified Intermittent Self-Catheterization Questionnaire (mISC-Q) was used to determine potential changes in patients’ QoL as a result of switching from MUC to SUC. The mISC-Q consists of questions within four categories: ease of use, convenience, discreetness, and symptomatic benefit. Answers were graded as Strongly agree (+2), Agree (+1), Not sure (0), Disagree (-1), and Strongly disagree (-2). Overall patient QoL, as well as by sex, disease (presence of augmentation cystoplasty), and catheterization route (via urethra or urinary diversion), were analyzed. Results Thirty-eight patients (21M:17F; mean age: 21.7±5.3 y) submitted questionnaires. For ease of use, SUC was significantly better than MUC (score: 0.364, P=0.002) in all patients. Patients with catheterization via the urethra showed significant favor for SUC in ease of use (score: 0.512, P

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and management status of urologic disease in geriatric hospitals in Korea. Materials and Methods: We conducted population-based analyzed using cohort established by the National Health Insurance Service of Korea, which contains the medical insurance data of 1 million people from 2002 to 2013. The prevalence, prescription rate, and complication incidence of urologic disease in geriatric hospitals were compared with similar-sized general hospitals. We analyzed the changes that followed the adoption of the fixed sum medical fee per day for geriatric hospitals, which began in January 2008. Subgroup analysis was conducted in an elderly group and a propensity score matching (PSM) group. Results: During this time, the number of geriatric hospitals exponentially increased over general hospitals (675.5%/y vs. 30.9%/y). The prevalence, prescription rate, and complication incidence of urologic disease was higher in geriatric hospitals than in general hospitals (2.1, 1.8, and 1.4 times higher). In the elderly group, the prevalence of urologic disorders was higher in geriatric hospitals than in general hospitals, but the prescription rate was lower (26.5% vs. 19.9% and 6.8% vs. 10.0%). This tendency also founded in the PSM analysis. After the medical fee system changed, diagnosis and prescription rates decreased in geriatric hospitals but increased in general hospitals. Conclusions: Urologic diseases are more prevalent yet management has some problem in geriatric hospitals. Lack of institutional urologists and changes in the medical payment system should be associated with this problem. Additional study and political support are needed to overcome this issue.

The Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (KSGE) developed a gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy board in 1995 and related regulations. Although the KSGE has acquired many specialists since then, the education and training aims and guidelines were insufficient. During GI fellowship training, obtaining sufficient exposure to some types of endoscopic procedures is difficult. Fellows should acquire endoscopic skills through supervised endoscopic procedures during GI fellowship training. Thus, the KSGE requires training guidelines for fellowships that allow fellows to perform independent endoscopic procedures without supervision. This document is intended to provide principles that the Committee of Education and Training of the KSGE can use to develop practical guidelines for granting privileges to perform accurate GI endoscopy safely. The KSGE will improve the quality of GI endoscopy by providing guidelines for fellowships and supervisors.

The importance of developing a source-term assessment technology has been emphasized owing to the decommissioning of Kori nuclear power plant (NPP) Unit 1 and the increase of deteriorated NPPs. We analyzed the behavioral mechanism of corrosion products in the primary system of a pressurized heavy-water reactor-type NPP. In addition, to check the possibility of applying the CRUDTRAN code to a Canadian Deuterium Uranium Reactor (CANDU)-type NPP, the type was assessed using collected domestic onsite data. With the assessment results, it was possible to predict trends according to operating cycles. Values estimated using the code were similar to the measured values. The results of this study are expected to be used to manage the radiation exposures of operators in high-radiation areas and to predict decommissioning processes in the primary system.

Purpose: We aimed to investigate the current management status of urologic diseases in geriatric hospitals in South Korea. Materials and Methods: Questionnaire surveys and in-depth person-to-person interviews were conducted at 13 hospitals within the Seoul and Incheon areas. Results: The study was carried out from July to December 2014; 75.6% of patients (1,858/2,458) and 77.5% (779/1,031) of medical personnel responded to our survey. All surveys and interviews were performed by urology specialists, fellows, residents, or nurses. The hospitals included in the study had an average of 215.2 beds (range, 110–367), 189.1 patients (range, 90–345), and 40.2 nurses (range, 10–83). The average number of physicians was 6.2 (range, 3–11), but none of these were certified urologists. Only 4 hospitals provided consultation services for urological disorders. In total, 64% of patients had urological disorders, although only 20.7% of patients were receiving medication. Most patients were being treated using urological interventions; diapers (49.7%), indwelling catheters (19.5%), clean intermittent catheters (12.2%), and external collection urinary drainage (7.9%). However, most interventions were inadequately implemented, and only 17% of the patients had been examined by a certified urologist. Urological complications were found in 20.2% of patients, and secondary complications occurred in 18.8%. Excluding redundant cases, the total prevalence of urological complications was 39.0%. Conclusions: Urologic diseases are poorly managed, and no certified urologists work in geriatric hospitals. Therefore, more designated urologists are needed in geriatric hospitals.

The cellular macromolecular contents and energy value of phytoplankton as primary food source determine the growth of higher trophic levels, affecting the balance and sustainability of oceanic food webs. Especially, proteins are more directly linked with basic functions of phytoplankton biosynthesis and cell division and transferred through the food chains. In recent years, the East/Japan Sea (EJS) has been changed dramatically in environmental conditions, such as physical and chemical characteristics, as well as biological properties. Therefore, developing an algorithm to estimate the protein concentration of phytoplankton and monitor their spatiotemporal variations on a broad scale would be invaluable. To derive the protein concentration of phytoplankton in EJS, the new regional algorithm was developed by using multiple linear regression analyses based on field-measured data which were obtained from 2012 to 2018 in the southwestern EJS. The major factors for the protein concentration were identified as chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and sea surface nitrate (SSN) in the southwestern EJS. The coefficient of determination (r2) between field-measured and algorithm-derived protein concentrations was 0.55, which is rather low but reliable. The satellite-derived estimation generally follows the 1:1 line with the field-measured data, with Pearson’s correlation coefficient, which was 0.40 (p-value < 0.01, n = 135). No remarkable trend in the long-term annual protein concentration of phytoplankton was found in the study area during our observation period. However, some seasonal difference was observed in winter protein concentration between the 2003–2005 and 2017–2019 periods. The algorithm is developed for the regional East/Japan Sea (EJS) and could contribute to long-term monitoring for climate-associated ecosystem changes. For a better understanding of spatiotemporal variation in the protein concentration of phytoplankton in the EJS, this algorithm should be further improved with continuous field surveys.

Purpose Colorectal obstruction develops most frequently by carcinoma, and 7%–30% of these colorectal carcinomas are acute cases. The oncologic safety of self-expanding metal stent (SEMS) insertion as a bridge to surgery has not yet been established. Thus, we investigated the oncologic safety of SEMS insertion as a bridge to surgery in patients with obstructive colorectal cancer. Methods This retrospective had 56 patients enrolled requiring emergency management for obstructive colorectal cancer at stage II or III, who had undergone curative surgery between July 2008 and June 2011. These subjects were divided into two groups: patients who had undergone emergency surgery without SEMS insertion (non-stent group) and those who had undergone elective surgery after preoperative decompression with SEMS insertion (stent group). The two groups were compared for clinicopathologic characteristics, postoperative complications, and survival rate. Results Enterostomy was performed in 25 patients (100.0%) in the non-stent group and 1 patient (3.2%) in the stent group; laparoscopic surgery was carried out in 7 patients (28.0%) in the non-stent group and 19 patients (61.29%) in the stent group, each showing statistically significant differences. There was no statistically significant difference in postoperative complications and 5-year disease-free survival rate (72% vs. 74.19%, P=0.87, respectively). Conclusion In treatment of malignant colorectal obstruction, elective operation after stent insertion had similar oncologic outcomes compared with emergency operation. Preoperative stent insertion not only lowers the incidence of enterostomy but also makes laparoscopic surgery possible, thereby enhancing patients’ quality of life. Therefore, preoperative stent insertion is a useful method that may replace emergency surgery in treatment of malignant colorectal obstruction.

Background : /Aims: This study evaluated the diagnostic efficacy of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT (F-18 FDG PET/CT) for patients with gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma and examined the association between FDG avidity and the clinical factors affecting lesions. Methods : : Among the patients diagnosed with gastric MALT lymphoma, 16 who underwent a PET/CT for gastric MALT lymphoma were semi-quantitatively and qualitatively tested for FDG avidity of lesions in the stomach. Retrospectively collected data was analyzed to investigate the clinicoradiological factors and endoscopic findings between the patients with positive F-18 FDG PET/CT scans and those with negative scans. Results : : Eight of the 16 patients showed FDG avidity. When comparing the size of lesions in the stomach, the patients with FDG avidity had significantly larger lesions than those without (28.8 mm vs. 15.0 mm, p=0.03). The FDG-avid group has a significantly higher rate of positive CT scans than the non-avid group (75% vs. 13%, p=0.03). According to the endoscopic finding of the lesions, FDG avidity was pronounced with 75% of the protruding tumors, and 100% of the erosive-ulcerative types, which are a type of depressed tumors. Conclusion : s: When gastric MALT lymphoma is large, when lesions are found using abdominal CT scans, and the macroscopic appearance of a lesion is that of a protruding tumor or erosive-ulcerative type of depressed tumor, there is a high probability that such patients may have a positive F-18 FDG PET/CT scan. As a part of Korean-Russian joint expeditions in the East/Japan Sea during 2012 and 2015, a set of total and small (3− and NH4+ uptake rate estimations were carried out. The study aimed to assess the spatio-temporal variations in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) assimilation by the total and small phytoplankton. The results show that the total NO3− uptake rates during 2012 varied between 0.001 and 0.150 μmol NL−1h−1 (mean ± SD = 0.034 ± 0.033) and that the total NH4+ uptake rates ranged between 0.002 and 0.707 μmol NL−1h−1 (mean ± SD = 0.200 ± 0.158). The total uptake rates during 2015 were ranged from 0.003 to 0.530 (mean ± S.D. = 0.117 ± 0.120 μmol NL−1h−1) for NO3− and from 0.008 to 1.17 (mean ± S.D. = 0.199 ± 0.266 NL−1h−1) for NH4+. The small phytoplankton NO3− and NH4+ uptake rates during 2015 ranged between 0.001 and 0.164 (mean ± S.D. = 0.033 ± 0.036) μmol NL−1h−1 and 0.010–0.304 (mean ± S.D. = 0.101 ± 0.073) μmol NL−1h−1, respectively. Small phytoplankton’s contribution to the total depth-integrated NO3− and NH4+ uptake rates ranged from 10.24 to 59.36% and from 30.21 to 68.55%, respectively. The significant negative relationship observed between the depth-integrated total NO3− and NH4+ uptake rates and small phytoplankton contributions indicates a possible decline in the DIN assimilation rates under small phytoplankton dominance. The results from the present study highlight the possibility of a reduction in the total DIN assimilation process in the East/Japan Sea when small phytoplankton dominate under strong thermal stratification due to sea surface warming. The present study’s findings agree with the model projections, which suggested a decline in primary production in the global warming scenario.

In recent years, the change of marine environment due to climate change and declining primary productivity have been big concerns in the East/Japan Sea, Korea. However, the main causes for the recent changes are still not revealed clearly. The particulate organic carbon (POC) to chlorophyll-a (chl-a) ratio (POC:chl-a) could be a useful indicator for ecological and physiological conditions of phytoplankton communities and thus help us to understand the recent reduction of primary productivity in the East/Japan Sea. To derive the POC in the East/Japan Sea from a satellite dataset, the new regional POC algorithm was empirically derived with in-situ measured POC concentrations. A strong positive linear relationship (R2 = 0.6579) was observed between the estimated and in-situ measured POC concentrations. Our new POC algorithm proved a better performance in the East/Japan Sea compared to the previous one for the global ocean. Based on the new algorithm, long-term POC:chl-a ratios were obtained in the entire East/Japan Sea from 2003 to 2018. The POC:chl-a showed a strong seasonal variability in the East/Japan Sea. The spring and fall blooms of phytoplankton mainly driven by the growth of large diatoms seem to be a major factor for the seasonal variability in the POC:chl-a. Our new regional POC algorithm modified for the East/Japan Sea could potentially contribute to long-term monitoring for the climate-associated ecosystem changes in the East/Japan Sea. Although the new regional POC algorithm shows a good correspondence with in-situ observed POC concentrations, the algorithm should be further improved with continuous field surveys.

This study investigated the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Utrecht Scale for Evaluation of Rehabilitation-Participation (K-USER-P) in patients with stroke. Stroke patients participated in this study. The Utrecht Scale for Evaluation of Rehabilitation-Participation was translated from English into Korean. A total of 120 questionnaires involving the K-USER-P were distributed to rehabilitation hospitals and centers by mail. Of those, 100 questionnaires were returned and 67 were included in the final analysis after exclusion of questionnaires with insufficient responses. We analyzed the questionnaires for internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity. The results indicated that internal consistency coefficients of the frequency, restriction, and satisfaction domains were 0.69, 0.66, and 0.67, respectively. Test-retest reliability was 0.63, 0.45, and 0.71 for the three domains, respectively. Intercorrelations between the SF-12 and the London Handicap Scale were generally moderate to good. The Korean version of the Utrecht Scale for Evaluation of Rehabilitation-Participation can be used as a measure of the participation level of stroke patients in clinical practice and the local community.

The climate-induced changes in marine fishery resources in South Korea have been a big concern over the last decades. The climate regime shift has led to not only a change in the dominant fishery resources, but also a decline in fishery landings in several species. The habitat suitability index (HSI) has been widely used to detect and forecast fishing ground formation. In this study, the catch data of the Todarodes pacificus (Japanese Common Squid) and satellite-derived environmental parameters were used to estimate the HSI for the T. pacificus around South Korea. More than 80% of the total catch was found in regions with a sea surface temperature (SST) of 14.91−27.26 °C, sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) of 0.05−0.20 m, chlorophyll-a of 0.32−1.35 mg m−3, and primary production of 480.41−850.18 mg C m−2 d−1. Based on these results, the HSI model for T. pacificus was derived. A strong positive relationship (R2 = 0.9260) was found between the HSI and the fishery landings. The climatological monthly mean HSI from 2002 to 2016 showed several hotspots, coinciding with the spawning and feeding grounds of T. pacificus. This outcome implies that our estimated HSI can yield a reliable prediction of the fishing ground for T. pacificus around South Korea. Furthermore, the approach with the simple HSI model used in this study can be applied elsewhere, and will help us to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of fishery resources.
