Abstract Background In transtendinous full thickness rotator cuff tears (FTRCT) with remnant cuff, conventionally, cuff remnant of the greater tuberosity (GT) is debrided for better tendon to bone healing. However, larger cuff defect caused overtension on the repaired tendon. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes and tendon integrity between remnant preserving and remnant debriding cuff repairs in the transtendinous FTRCT with remnant cuff. Methods From March, 2012 to October, 2017, a total of 127 patients who had the transtendinous FTRCT with remnant cuff were enrolled in this study. Rotator cuff tears were repaired arthroscopically, with patients divided into two groups: group I (n = 63), where rotator cuff remnants were preserved during the repair, and group II (n = 64), where the remnants were debrided during the repair. Clinical outcomes were assessed at the last follow-up (minimum 2 years) using the UCLA score, ASES score, SST score, Constant Shoulder score, and range of motion (ROM). The analysis of structural integrity and tendon quality was performed using the Sugaya classification on postoperative MRI scans at 8 months after surgery. IntroductionThis study investigates the relationship between ciliary muscle dynamics, thickness, and the regulation of intraocular pressure (IOP), focusing on the progression of cataracts and changes post-phacoemulsification. It explores how these factors impact canine ocular health, particularly in the context of cataract development and subsequent surgical intervention.Materials and methodsData was collected using Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM) from dogs at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungbuk National University, Korea. The study involved 57 eyes from 35 dogs, categorized into five groups: 13 normal eyes, 14 with incipient cataracts, 12 with immature cataracts, 6 with mature cataracts, and 12 post-phacoemulsification. UBM measurements assessed various ciliary muscle parameters including ciliary body axial length (CBAXL), ciliary process-sclera angle (CPSA), longitudinal fibers of ciliary muscle thickness (Lf-CMT), and longitudinal and radial fibers of ciliary muscle thickness (LRf-CMT).ResultsFindings indicated a decrease in CBAXL and an increase in Lf-CMT as cataracts progressed in severity. Post-phacoemulsification, there was a notable increase in CBAXL and a decrease in CPSA, Lf-CMT, and LRf-CMT, compared to both cataractous and normal eyes. Regression analysis revealed a significant positive association between CBAXL and IOP, alongside a negative association between Lf-CMT and IOP. These findings suggest that variations in ciliary muscle dynamics and thickness, as influenced by cataract progression and phacoemulsification, have distinct impacts on intraocular pressure.DiscussionThe study proposes that phacoemulsification leads to ciliary muscle contraction, causing an inward and anterior movement of the ciliary muscle. This movement results in the narrowing of the ciliary cleft and constriction of the unconventional outflow pathway, potentially causing an increased risk of glaucoma post-surgery. Our research contributes to understanding the anatomical and physiological changes in the canine eye following cataract surgery and underscores the importance of monitoring IOP and ciliary muscle dynamics in these patients.

Background Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) can fail for several reasons, such as component loosening, periprosthetic fracture, instability, infection, soft tissue failure, or joint overstuffing. Severe metallosis without loose glenoid components after TSA may result in the need for revision to reverse TSA. Case presentation Four years before the current presentation, an 86‐year‐old woman suffered from right shoulder pain and swelling. The initial diagnosis was osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint, for which she underwent TSA. Four years later, she complained of shoulder joint pain, swelling, and limited range of motion. On sonography, subscapularis and supraspinatus tendon tears were identified. Plain radiographs and computed tomography (CT) scans showed metallosis around the shoulder joint. Due to the rocking horse mechanism, wear of the upper portion of the glenoid component and bearing caused a foreign‐body reaction and severe metallosis around the joint. Due to a massive rotator cuff tear combined with glenoid component wear, the patient eventually underwent reverse TSA (RTSA) and was satisfied with the final results. Conclusions Severe metallosis due to glenoid component wear combined with a massive rotator cuff tear in TSA may cause the need for revision to RTSA.

Change detection using SAR data has been an active topic in various applications. Because conventional change detection identifies signal changes in single-pol radar observations, they cannot separately detect different kinds of change associated with different ground parameters. In this study, we investigated the comprehensive use of dual-pol parameters and proposed a novel dual-pol-based change detection framework utilizing different dual-pol scatter-type indicators. To optimize the exploitation of dual-pol change information, we presented a two-step processing strategy that divides the multiclass change detection process into a binary detection step that identifies the presence of changes and the classification step that distinguishes the types of change. In the detection stage, each dual-pol parameter was considered as an independent information source. Assuming potential conflict between dual-pol parameters, a disjunctive combination of detection results from different dual-pol parameters was applied to obtain the final detection result. In the classification step, an unsupervised change classification strategy was proposed based on the change direction and magnitude of the dual-pol parameters within the change class. Experimental results exhibited significantly improved detectability across a wide change spectrum compared with previous dual-pol-based change detection approaches. They also demonstrated the possibility of distinguishing different semantic changes without in situ ground data.

AbstractPhenethyl-based edelfosine-analogs with saturated, monounsaturated, or polyunsaturated alkoxy substituents on phenyl ring were designed as novel antitumor lipids modulating p38 MAPK. Evaluation of the synthesised compounds against nine panels of diverse cancer cells presented saturated and monounsaturated alkoxy-substituted derivatives as the most active than other derivatives. In addition, ortho-substituted compounds were more active than meta- or ortho-substituted compounds. They were potential anticancer agents against blood, lung, colon, CNS, ovary, renal, and prostate cancers but not against skin nor breast cancers. Compounds, 1b and 1a emerged as the most potential anticancer agents. Assessment of compound 1b impact on p38 MAPK and AKT confirmed it as an inhibitor of p38 MAPK but not AKT. In silico study suggested compounds 1b and 1a as possible binders to the lipid binding pocket of p38 MAPK. Overall, compounds 1b and 1a as novel broad spectrum antitumor lipids modulating activity of p38 MAPK for further development.

Recently, as global climate change and local disturbances such as wildfires continue, long- and short-term changes in the high-latitude vegetation systems have been observed in various studies. Although remote sensing technology using optical satellites has been widely used in understanding vegetation dynamics in high-latitude areas, there has been limited understanding of various landscape changes at different spatiotemporal scales, their mutual relationships, and overall long-term landscape changes. The objective of this study is to devise a change monitoring strategy that can effectively observe landscape changes at different spatiotemporal scales in the boreal ecosystems from temporally sparse time series remote sensing data. We presented a new post-classification-based change analysis scheme and applied it to time series Landsat data for the central Yakutian study area. Spectral variability between time series data has been a major problem in the analysis of changes that make it difficult to distinguish long- and short-term land cover changes from seasonal growth activities. To address this issue effectively, two ideas in the time series classification, such as the stepwise classification and the lateral stacking strategies were implemented in the classification process. The proposed classification results showed consistently higher overall accuracies of more than 90% obtained in all classes throughout the study period. The temporal classification results revealed the distinct spatial and temporal patterns of the land cover changes in central Yakutia. The spatiotemporal distribution of the short-term class illustrated that the ecosystem disturbance caused by fire could be affected by local thermal and hydrological conditions of the active layer as well as climatic conditions. On the other hand, the long-term class changes revealed land cover trajectories that could not be explained by monotonic increase or decrease. To characterize the long-term land cover change patterns, we applied a piecewise linear model with two line segments to areal class changes. During the former half of the study period, which corresponds to the 2000s, the areal expansion of lakes on the eastern Lena River terrace was the dominant feature of the land cover change. On the other hand, the land cover changes in the latter half of the study period, which corresponds to the 2010s, exhibited that lake area decreased, particularly in the thermokarst lowlands close to the Lena and Aldan rivers. In this area, significant forest decline can also be identified during the 2010s.

Abstract Introduction The complications of the conventional medialized design for reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) are increased scapular notching, and decreased external rotation and deltoid wrapping. Currently, lateralization design RSA, which avoid scapular notching and improve impingement-free range of motion, is commonly used. Especially, humeral lateralization design was most commonly used and glenoid lateralization design was preferred for glenoid abnormities. We compared mid-term clinical and radiologic outcomes of glenoid and humeral lateralization RSA in an Asian population in this study. Materials and Methods We enrolled 124 shoulders of 122 consecutive patients (mean age 73.8 ± 6.8 years) who received glenoid or humeral lateralization RSA from May, 2012 to March, 2019. We divided these patients into two groups according to RSA using either glenoid or humeral lateralization design. These different designs were introduced consecutively in Korea. The clinical and radiological results of 60 glenoid lateralization RSA (Group I, 60 patients) and 64 humeral lateralization RSA (Group II, 62 patients) were retrospectively evaluated and also were compared between the two groups. All patients were followed for mean 3 years. Results The clinical and radiologic outcomes of the two groups did not differ significantly, including scapular notching (p = 0.134). However, humeral lateralization RSA showed a larger glenoid-tuberosity (GT) distance (p = 0.000) and less distalization shoulder angle (DSA) (p = 0.035). The complication rate did not differ significantly either. But, revision surgery was performed for 2 humeral loosening in the Group II. Conclusion The clinical and radiologic outcomes of the two groups did not differ significantly, including scapular notching at mid-term follow-up. However, humeral lateralization design showed larger GT distance and less DSA. Humeral lateralization design RSA could preserve the normal shoulder contour due to a larger GT distance (more lateralization) and provide less deltoid tension due to less DSA (less distalization of COR).

IntroductionGlaucoma is one of the most serious complications that causes irreversible blindness after phacoemulsification in dogs; however, a clear mechanism has not been elucidated. This study aimed to analyse the possible anatomical factors associated with glaucoma after phacoemulsification using parameters that reflect the anatomical characteristics of dogs.Materials and methodsA total of 69 eyes of 48 dogs were included in this study. The patients were divided into three groups: normal eye (n = 18), cataract (n = 39), and post-phacoemulsification for at least 2 months after surgery (post-phaco, n = 12). For further analysis, the dogs were subdivided into two groups according to cataract stage: phacoemulsification non-candidate and candidate groups. Non-cataracts and incipient cataracts were categorized into the non-candidate group, whereas immature and mature cataracts were categorized into the candidate group. Measurements of the ciliary cleft parameters, including the area of the ciliary cleft (CCA), length of the ciliary cleft (CCL), width of the ciliary cleft (CCW), iridocorneal angle, and angle opening distance, were obtained using ultrasound biomicroscopy.ResultsCCA, CCL, and CCW were significantly higher in the candidate group than in the non-candidate group. CCA, CCL, and CCW were significantly reduced in the post-phaco group compared to those in the cataract group. Based on these results, we found that the ciliary cleft expanded in cataract-affected eyes and narrowed after phacoemulsification. This may indicate that the space between the trabecular meshworks became narrower, potentially leading to an increase in the resistance of the aqueous humor.ConclusionA narrowed ciliary cleft after phacoemulsification may be an anatomical factor associated with glaucoma.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a vision-threatening complication that affects virtually all diabetic patients. Various treatments have been attempted, but they have many side effects and limitations. Alternatively, stem cell therapy is being actively researched, but it faces challenges due to a low cell survival rate. In this study, stem cells were pretreated with sirolimus, which is known to promote cell differentiation and enhance the survival rate. Additionally, the subconjunctival route was employed to reduce complications following intravitreal injections. Methods: Diabetes mellitus was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 55 mg/kg of streptozotocin (STZ), and DR was confirmed at 10 weeks after DM induction through electroretinogram (ERG). The rats were divided into four groups: intact control group (INT), diabetic retinopathy group (DR), DR group with subconjunctival MSC injection (DR-MSC), and DR group with subconjunctival sirolimus-pretreated MSC injection (DR-MSC-S). The effects of transplantation were evaluated using ERG and histological examinations. Results: The ERG results showed that the DR-MSC-S group did not significantly differ from the INT in b-wave amplitude and exhibited significantly higher values than the DR-MSC and DR groups (p < 0.01). The flicker amplitude results showed that the DR-MSC and DR-MSC-S groups had significantly higher values than the DR group (p < 0.01). Histological examination revealed that the retinal layers were thinner in the DR-induced groups compared to the INT group, with the DR-MSC-S group showing the thickest retinal layers among them. Conclusions: Subconjunctival injection of sirolimus-pretreated MSCs can enhance retinal function and mitigate histological changes in the STZ-induced DR rat model.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing has been widely used as one of the most effective tools for responding to earthquake disasters. In general, damaged-building detection with SAR data has been conducted based on change detection using temporal SAR data acquired in the same observation mode. However, it is not always possible to use SAR data obtained with the appropriate observation mode in unexpected events such as natural disasters. This study aims to detect earthquake-induced damaged buildings using temporal SAR data having different observation modes. We presented a contextual change analysis method to map damaged buildings based on novel textural features. This study was conducted using the bi-temporal Komapsat-5 data obtained in different polarization modes. Experimental results for the area severely damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake showed that the proposed textural analysis can improve detectability in building-damaged areas while maintaining low false alarm rates in agricultural areas. According to the grid-based accuracy analysis, the proposed method can successfully detect the damaged areas with a detection rate of about 72.5% and false alarms of about 6.8% even on challenging data sets.

Abstract Background Our hypothesis was that minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) using long philos plate (LPP) would show better clinical and radiological outcomes and less complications than narrow locking compression plate (NLCP) for spiral humerus shaft fractures with or without metaphyseal fracture extension. Methods From January 2009 to May 2016, we retrospectively studied 35 patients who underwent MIPO for spiral humerus shaft fractures with or without metaphyseal fracture extension (AO classification 12 A, B, C except A3). Eighteen patients underwent MIPO with a 4.5 mm NLCP (group I) in the early period of this study, while 17 patients underwent MIPO with LPP (group II) in the later period. Range of motion (ROM), pre- and post-operative anteroposterior (AP) and lateral angulation of the fracture, operation time, amount of bleeding, and functional outcomes including American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, University of California at Los Angeles score, and Simple Shoulder Test score were analyzed at the final follow up. A series of thirteen triarylpyrazole analogs were investigated as inhibitors of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. The target compounds 1a–m have first been assessed for cytotoxicity against RAW 264.7 macrophages to determine their non-cytotoxic concentration(s) for anti-inflammatory testing to make sure that the inhibition of PGE2 and NO production would not be caused by cytotoxicity. It was found that compounds 1f and 1m were the most potent PGE2 inhibitors with IC50 values of 7.1 and 1.1 μM, respectively. In addition, these compounds also showed inhibitory effects of 11.6% and 37.19% on LPS-induced NO production, respectively. The western blots analysis of COX-2 and iNOS showed that the PGE2 and NO inhibitory effect of compound 1m are attributed to inhibition of COX-2 and iNOS protein expression through inactivation of p38.

The present study demonstrated that 2′-hydroxycinnamaldehyde (2′-HCA) induced apoptosis in human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells through the activation of mitochondrial pathways including (1) translocation of Bim and Bax from the cytosol to mitochondria, (2) downregulation of Bcl-2 protein expression, (3) cytochrome c release into the cytosol, (4) loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), and (5) caspase activation. 2′-HCA also induced the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) in HL-60 cells. The pharmacological and genetic inhibition of JNK effectively prevented 2′-HCA-induced apoptosis and activator protein-1 (AP-1)-DNA binding. In addition, 2′-HCA resulted in the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and depletion of intracellular glutathione (GSH) and protein thiols (PSH) in HL-60 cells. NAC treatment abrogated 2′-HCA-induced JNK phosphorylation, AP-1-DNA binding, and Bim mitochondrial translocation, suggesting that oxidative stress may be required for 2′-HCA-induced intrinsic apoptosis. Xenograft mice inoculated with HL-60 leukemia cells demonstrated that the intraperitoneal administration of 2′-HCA inhibited tumor growth by increasing of TUNEL staining, the expression levels of nitrotyrosine and pro-apoptotic proteins, but reducing of PCNA protein expression. Taken together, our findings suggest that 2′-HCA induces apoptosis via the ROS-dependent JNK pathway and could be considered as a potential therapeutic agent for leukemia.

Pelubiprofen (PEL), which is a commercialized non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is associated with the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events following long-term exposure and has poor water-soluble properties. Here, a new pelubiprofen tromethamine (PEL-T) with improved solubility, permeability, GI safety, and absorption, compared to PEL, has been developed. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) results confirmed that the PEL-T was well formed. The powder of PEL-T showed the presence of additional 6H protons at δ 3.66–3.61 in the 1H NMR spectrum, and shifted the sharp endothermic peaks at 129 °C in DSC, and the spectrum of distinct absorption peaks in FT-IR. In addition, compared with PEL, PEL-T showed a significantly improved solubility in various media and an increased permeability coefficient (Kp) in Caco-2 cells. Furthermore, compared to PEL oral administration, PEL-T was found to significantly reduce the damaged area in an acute gastric damage rat model. The pharmacokinetic study of the PEL-T powder showed higher maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) and area under the plasma concentration–time curve from 0 h to the last time point (AUCt) than those of the PEL powder. Taken together, our data suggest that PEL-T is a recommendable candidate with enhanced gastrointestinal safety and better absorption compared with commercial PEL.

Background. Robotic locomotion rehabilitation systems have been used for gait training in patients who have had a stroke. Most commercialized systems allow patients to perform simple exercises such as balancing or level walking, but an additional function such as stair-walk training is required to provide a wide range of recovery cycle rehabilitation. In this study, we analyzed stair-gait patterns and applied the result to a robotic rehabilitation system that can provide a vertical motion of footplates. Methods. To obtain applicable data for the robotic system with vertically movable footplates, stair-walk action was measured using an optical marker-based motion capture system. The spatial position data of joints during stair walking was obtained from six healthy adults who participated in the experiment. The measured marker data were converted into joint kinematic data by using an algorithm that included resampling and normalization. The spatial position data are represented as angular trajectories and the relative displacement of each joint on the anatomical sagittal plane and movements of hip joints on the anatomical transverse plane. Results. The average range of motion (ROM) of each joint was estimated as (−6.75°,48.69°) at the hip, 8.20°,93.78° at the knee, and −17.78°,11.75° at the ankle during ascent and as 6.41°,31.67° at the hip, 7.38°,91.93° at the knee, and −24.89°,24.18° at the ankle during descent. Additionally, we attempted to create a more natural stair-gait pattern by analyzing the movement of the hip on the anatomical transverse plane. The hip movements were estimated to within ±1.57 cm and ±2.00 cm for hip translation and to within ±2.52° and ±2.70° for hip rotation during stair ascent and stair descent, respectively. Conclusions. Based on the results, standard patterns of stair ascent and stair descent were derived and applied to a lower-limb rehabilitation robot with vertically movable footplates. The relative trajectory from the experiment ascertained that the function of stair walking in the robotic system properly worked within a normal ROM.

Radar backscattering properties can be extremely sensitive to the freeze/thaw states of the ground surface. This study aims to evaluate the changes of L-band microwave scattering characteristics between thawed and frozen conditions by using polarimetric scattering mechanism indicators. ALOS PALSAR polarimetric mode data acquired in winter and spring seasons over Eastern Siberia are used in this study. Experimental results show that the actual scattering mechanisms and their seasonal variations over various forested and non-forested permafrost ecosystems can be successfully characterized by the polarimetric target decomposition parameters and the polarimetric coherences. In addition, fully polarimetric radar observations exhibit great potential for mapping land cover types and surficial features in the permafrost active layer. Particularly, the co-polarization coherences on the HV-polarization basis and circular-polarization basis were found to be very useful for discriminating different surficial geocryological characteristics in recently burnt forests and thermokarst regions.

Remote sensing, particularly using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, can be an effective tool in detecting and assessing the area and amount of building damages caused by earthquake or tsunami. Several studies have provided experimental evidence for the importance of polarimetric SAR observations in building damage detection and assessment, particularly caused by a tsunami. This study aims to evaluate the practical applicability of the polarimetric SAR observations to building damage caused by the direct ground-shaking of an earthquake. The urban areas heavily damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake in Japan have been investigated by using the polarimetric PALSAR-2 data acquired in pre- and post-earthquake conditions. Several polarimetric change detection approaches, such as the changes of polarimetric scattering powers, the matrix dissimilarity measures, and changes of the radar scattering mechanisms, were examined. Optimal damage indicators in the presence of significant natural changes, and a novel change detection method by the fuzzy-based fusion of polarimetric damage indicators are proposed. The accuracy analysis results show that the proposed automatic classification method can successfully detect the selected damaged areas with a detection rate of 90.9% and false-alarm rate of 1.3%.

Remote sensing technologies, particularly with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system, can provide timely and critical information to assess landslide distributions over large areas. Most space-borne SAR systems have been operating in different polarimetric modes to meet various operational requirements. This study aims to discuss how much detectability can be expected in the landslide map produced from the single-, dual-, and quad-polarization modes of observation. The experimental analysis of the characteristic changes of PALSAR-2 signals showed that quad-polarization parameters indicating signal depolarization properties revealed noticeable landslide-induced temporal changes for all local incidence angle ranges. To produce a landslide map, a simple change detection method based on characteristic scattering properties of landslide areas was proposed. The accuracy assessment results showed that the depolarization parameters, such as the co-pol coherence and polarizing contribution, can identify areas affected by landslides with a detection rate of 60%, and a false-alarm rate of 5%. On the other hand, the single- or dual-pol parameters can only be expected to provide half the accuracy with significant false-alarms in areas with temporal variations independent of landslides.

Polarimetric target decomposition enables the interpretation of radar images more easily, mostly based on physical assumptions, i.e., fitting physically-based scattering models to the polarimetric SAR observations. However, the model-fitting result cannot be always successful. Particularly, the performance of model-fitting in sloping forests is still an open question. In this study, the effect of ground topography on the model-fitting-based polarimetric decomposition techniques is investigated. The estimation accuracy of each scattering component in the decomposition results are evaluated based on the simulated target matrix by using the incoherent vegetation scattering model that accounts for the tilted scattering surface beneath the forest canopy. Experimental results show that the surface and the double-bounce scattering components can be significantly misestimated due to the topographic slope, even when the volume scattering power is successfully estimated.

The advantage of implementing the Water Cloud Model (WCM) is in being able to express complex scattering characteristics in a vegetated area with simple bulk vegetation descriptors. However, there has been a lack of understanding or consensus about the optimal set of vegetation descriptors. In this paper, the original and improved expressions of WCM are evaluated and the optimal vegetation descriptors are presented by examining the relationship between WCM vegetation parameters and the theoretical scattering model predictions. In addition, the condition-specific regression relationship between bulk vegetation descriptors and theoretical scattering and attenuation coefficients, expressed by the A and B parameters in the WCM, is analyzed in relation to the shape, size, and orientation distribution of the scatterer. Furthermore, the influence of radar observation conditions on the parameterization of the WCM is presented. The results show that the particle moisture content and the vegetation water content can be the optimal vegetation descriptors, denoted by the V 1 and V 2 variables in the WCM, respectively.

In the diverse applications of polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems, it is a crucial to conduct polarimetric calibration, which aims to remove the radar system distortion effects prior to utilizing polarimetric SAR observations. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of different polarimetric calibration methods. Two widely used methods, the Van Zyl and Quegan methods, and one recently proposed method, such as the Villa method, have been selected among various calibration methods in literature. The selected methods have basic differences in their assumptions that are applied to the polarimetric system model. In order to evaluate the calibration performances under different system parameters and ground characteristics, comparative analysis of the calibration results were conducted on synthetic polarimetric SAR data and ALOS PALSAR quad-pol mode data. Based on the experimental results, the advantages and limitations of different methods were clarified, and a simple hybrid calibration method is presented to further improve the polarimetric calibration performance.

This paper presents a robust change detection algorithm for high-resolution panchromatic imagery using a proposed dual-dense convolutional network (DCN). In this work, a joint structure of two deep convolutional networks with dense connectivity in convolution layers is designed in order to accomplish change detection for satellite images acquired at different times. The proposed network model detects pixel-wise temporal change based on local characteristics by incorporating information from neighboring pixels. Dense connection in convolution layers is designed to reuse preceding feature maps by connecting them to all subsequent layers. Dual networks are incorporated by measuring the dissimilarity of two temporal images. In the proposed algorithm for change detection, a contrastive loss function is used in a learning stage by running over multiple pairs of samples. According to our evaluation, we found that the proposed framework achieves better detection performance than conventional algorithms, in area under the curve (AUC) of 0.97, percentage correct classification (PCC) of 99%, and Kappa of 69, on average.

In this paper, the three-component power decomposition for polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data with an adaptive volume scattering model is proposed. The volume scattering model is assumed to be reflection-symmetric but parameterized. For each image pixel, the decomposition first starts with determining the adaptive parameter based on matrix similarity metric. Then, a respective scattering power component is retrieved with the established procedure. It has been shown that the proposed method leads to complete elimination of negative powers as the result of the adaptive volume scattering model. Experiments with the PolSAR data from both the NASA/JPL (National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Jet Propulsion Laboratory) Airborne SAR (AIRSAR) and the JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) ALOS-PALSAR also demonstrate that the proposed method not only obtains similar/better results in vegetated areas as compared to the existing Freeman-Durden decomposition but helps to improve discrimination of the urban regions.

Acanthamoeba infection is associated with keratitis in humans; however, its association with keratitis in dogs remains unclear. To investigate this possibility, we collected 171 conjunctival swab samples from dogs with eye-related diseases (65 with keratitis and 106 without keratitis) at Chungbuk National University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Korea, from August 2021 to September 2022. Polymerase chain reaction identified 9 samples (5.3%) as Acanthamoeba positive; of these, 3 were from dogs with keratitis (4.6%) and 6 were from dogs without keratitis (5.7%). Our results indicated no significant association between Acanthamoeba infection and keratitis, season, sex, or age. All Acanthamoeba organisms found in this study had the genotype T4, according to 18S ribosomal RNA analysis. Acanthamoeba infection in dogs might have only a limited association with keratitis.
