Respiratory illness caused by influenza virus is a serious public health problem worldwide. As the symptoms of influenza virus infection are similar to those of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, it is essential to distinguish these two viruses. Therefore, to properly respond to a pathogen, a detection method that is capable of rapid and accurate diagnosis in a hospital or at home is required. To satisfy this need, we applied loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and an isothermal nucleic acid amplification technique, along with a system to analyze the results without specialized equipment, a lateral flow assay (LFA). Using the platform developed in this study, all processes, from sample preparation to detection, can be performed without special equipment. Unlike existing PCR methods, the nucleic acid amplification can be performed in the field because hot packs do not require electricity. Thus, the designed platform can provide rapid results without the need to transport the samples to a laboratory or hospital. These advantages are not limited to operations in developing countries with poor access to medical systems. In conclusion, the developed technology is a promising tool for infectious disease management that allows for rapid identification of infectious diseases and appropriate treatment of patients.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is often performed sequentially on both sides during a single hospital stay. Patients who experience postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after the first operation are concerned about PONV recurrence after the second operation. However, there are few studies regarding the incidence of PONV in staged bilateral TKA with a ≥ 1-week interval. This study aimed to identify the differences in (1) PONV incidence, (2) use of rescue antiemetics, and (3) the amount of opioid consumption between the first and second operations for staged bilateral TKA with a 1-week interval. Based on our anecdotal experience, the hypothesis of this study was that during staged bilateral TKA at a 1-week interval, the PONV incidence and rescue antiemetic requirement after the second operation will be lower than those after the first operation, regardless of opioid consumption.Fifty-eight consecutive patients who underwent staged bilateral TKA with a 1-week interval were retrospectively reviewed. All second-stage operations were performed with the same anaesthesia protocol and perioperative patient management protocol as the first-stage operation. PONV incidence was the primary outcome. The requirement for rescue antiemetic drugs and the amount of opioid consumption were secondary outcome variables. The outcome variables were recorded during three postoperative days (Days 0-2) for each stage and were compared between the first and second operations.The incidence rates of nausea and vomiting on Day 0 (p = 0.001 and p = 0.004, respectively) and nausea on Day 1 (p = 0.008) were significantly lower after the second operation. Rescue antiemetic use on Day 0 was significantly lower after the second operation (p = 0.001). The total opioid consumption 72 h after surgery was significantly higher after the second operation (61.76 vs. 34.28 mg, p 0.001).During staged bilateral TKA with a 1-week interval, PONV incidence was lower after the second operation, even with increased opioid consumption.III.

Advancements in technology have led to the use of smartphones as biosensor detectors. However, it is difficult to obtain stable color information of colorimetric sensors using multiple smartphones owing to different light conditions and image correction operations. In this study, we attempted color detection of the colorimetric paper chip using smartphone-embedded light-emitting diode (LED) and simple transformation calculation. This method enables the acquisition of stable color information using different smartphones by reducing the influence of external light sources. Moreover, we studied characteristics such as convergence and distinction of detection result details by the manufacturers and smartphones. These findings suggested the necessity of classification criteria for the use of smartphones to achieve optimal detection. In addition, white and black references were used to set the standard for color correction of various light sources. Based on our results, we conclude that this approach presents the possibility of smartphone-based colorimetric detection in practical applications.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide. Generally, the levels of fasting or postprandial blood glucose and other biomarkers, such as glycated albumin, glycated hemoglobin, and 1,5-anhydroglucitol, are used to diagnose or monitor diabetes progression. In the present study, we developed a sensor to simultaneously detect the glucose levels and glycation ratios of human serum albumin using a lateral flow assay. Based on the specific enzymatic reactions and immunoassays, a spiked glucose solution, total human serum albumin, and glycated albumin were measured simultaneously. To test the performance of the developed sensor, clinical serum samples from healthy subjects and patients with diabetes were analyzed. The glucose level and glycation ratios of the clinical samples were determined with reasonable correlation. The R-squared values of glucose level and glycation ratio measurements were 0.932 and 0.930, respectively. The average detection recoveries of the sensor were 85.80% for glucose and 98.32% for the glycation ratio. The glucose level and glycation ratio in our results were crosschecked with reference diagnostic values of diabetes. Based on the outcomes of the present study, we propose that this novel platform can be utilized for the simultaneous detection of glucose and glycation ratios to diagnose and monitor diabetes mellitus.

Japan’s economy made remarkably fast progress since the mid-1950s when it recovered to its pre-war level. Accordingly, children grew appreciably taller, as the food supply and consumption (animal protein intakes for example) increased not only in quantity but also in quality. In particular, Japanese children grew sizably in height, also in pre-war years when the supply of animal proteins was virtually zero. They ceased to grow any taller in the early 1990s, when per capita consumption of animal products, milk in particular, was still increasing at high levels. Trivial question on whether the increase in animal protein intakes contributed to body height growth in Japan is naturally raised. When examining child height development throughout the past century Japan, total food calories and other essential nutrients such as vegetables and fruit should be taken into consideration. Comparison with South Korea seems to fortify this presumption.

Warfarin is a drug associated with blood clotting. As the side effects of this drug are fatal, it is important to adjust its dosage for each individual. In particular, DNA analysis of patients is necessary because the effect of the drug varies greatly depending on the genotype of the individual. Real-time PCR technology is usually used for DNA analysis. This technology requires expensive equipment, large space, and long experimental time. To solve these problems, we used a PCR module based on a CMOS photosensor. There are a heater circuit for thermal control on the its back side, and well-like structure on the surface, enabling location based multiplex PCR. We developed primers and probes to detect warfarin-related SNPs, and integrated with the PCR module. We tested the commercial Real-time PCR systems and our PCR modules. Based on the results, we confirmed that the level of performance of our system was similar to that of the commercial systems.

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) may be used in molecular and point-of-care diagnostics for pathogen detection. The amplification occurs under isothermal conditions using up to six primers. However, non-specific amplification is frequently observed in LAMP. Non-specific amplification has the potential to be triggered by forward and reverse internal primers. And the relatively low reaction temperature (55-65 °C) induces the secondary structure via primer-primer interactions. Primer redesign and probe design have been recommended to solve this problem. LAMP primers have strict conditions, such as Tm, GC contents, primer dimer, and distance between primers compared to conventional PCR primers. Probe design requires specialized knowledge to have high specificity for a target. In polymerase chain reaction (PCR), some chemicals or proteins are used for improving specificity and efficiency. Therefore, we hypothesized that additives can suppress the non-specific amplification. In this study, tetramethylammonium chloride (TMAC), formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, Tween 20, and bovine serum albumin have been used as LAMP additives. Nucleic acid amplification is a widely used diagnostic tool, although it requires a relatively time-consuming and complicated extraction step. To address this issue outside the laboratory, we investigated a sample preparation system and determined that a silica membrane and silica-coated beads are powerful tools for the extraction from raw samples: nucleic acids are kept in the silica membrane, retained during a single wash step, and released at the elution step. The eluent is appropriate for the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and loop-mediated amplification (LAMP) assay in terms of purity and quantity. We also built an innovative equipment-free nucleic acid extraction squeeze system which requires less than 20 min. The sample with improved purity augments the specificity and sensitivity. This system is simple, user-friendly, low-cost, and equipment-free, thus making nucleic acid extraction more accessible and affordable for researchers and untrained users. Furthermore, when combined with the reverse-transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction method, the method will accelerate the detection of diseases. The same goes when combined with the LAMP assay, especially in developing countries.

In this study, a new platform for the detection of porcine circovirus 2 was developed by avidin–biotin complex based lateral flow assay (LAMP-LFA). Improved detection sensitivity was attained by using loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) with a low limit of detection (LOD), so the platform can be used to detect even early or asymptomatic stages of infection. LFA, which requires no specialized equipment, facilitates the use of point-of-care (POC) tests. Therefore, by applying LFA, the result can be confirmed accurately with the naked eye. Moreover, this platform has a unique structure using a single-tag detection system. The avidin–biotin interaction is the strongest interaction between proteins and has a higher Kd value than antigen–antibody interactions. Thus, the results are stable and can be clearly confirmed. The high sensitivity of LAMP-LFA enables all steps to be completed in 30 min. As a result, it could be applied to different targets, such as other pathogens. Future POC diagnostic studies are expected to be of great practical benefit.

In this study, we developed a point-of-care assay platform with simultaneous detection and self-calibration capabilities for multiple targets based on a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD). This system is easily manufactured using a wax printing method on chromatographic paper. The design pattern consists of a zone of detection and a calibrant zone for controlled loading using wax barriers with different thicknesses. We showed the utility and applicability of this approach by a proof-of-concept study for two clinically important markers: glucose and lactate. With the naked eye, the results could be fully distinguished and recorded to evaluate the analytical performance with a flatbed scanner. The detection limits of glucose and lactate were 0.3125 mM and 0.2975 mM, respectively, and simultaneous detection was possible from a small sample (0.4 μL) with high sensitivity. Furthermore, this device has a self-calibration function, which minimizes the influence of environmental conditions (i.e., ambient light intensity, temperature, humidity, and pressure). Therefore, the developed multiplex paper-based device is promising for clinical multianalyte point-of-care testing since it is easy to manufacture, cost-effective, user-friendly, and highly sensitive.

This study presents an easy paper-plastic hybrid microfluidic chip fabrication method that explored the use of oven baking a wax-printed pattern for microfluidic channel assembly combined with the use of a double-sided adhesive tape for layer binding. More specifically, the method includes printing of a wax pattern onto the CA film & oven baking of the pattern along with the backed NC membrane at 120°C for 2.5 minutes. The porous nature of the NC membrane allows the wax pattern to enter into its pores during the baking process and binds the backed NC membrane with the CA film. Attachment of the engraved PMMA layer was performed to increase the structural support. The engraved hole of the layer allows the conjugate pad with space for its integration into the system. Moreover, the antibodies required for the integration of the chip with the LFIA were selected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A CA film, an NC membrane, and a PMMA sheet were used to develop a microfluidic chip that can be integrated with a sandwich format lateral flow immunoassay used to detect dengue non-structural 1 protein. The fabricated chip was able to successfully detect a concentration of dengue non-structural 1 protein of at least 84.66 ng/mL.

Quercetin-mediated gold nanoclusters (Qu-GNCs) were prepared for the first time by employing bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a stabilizer with a natural flavonoid, "quercetin" as a reducing agent. Interestingly, quercetin (Qu) forms a cluster by reacting with gold under alkali conditions in the presence of BSA. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of obtained nanoclusters exhibit the optimal size with homogenous distribution. Similarly, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the conjugation between Qu and GNCs and the photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed the bright yellowish-orange fluorescence of Qu-GNCs and they are stable over a long period of time. Further, Bio-atomic force microscopy (Bio-AFM) and confocal imaging of A549 (lung cancer cell lines) highlighted the cell morphology and cluster's efficacy, respectively. Moreover, as-synthesized Qu-GNCs exerted high and minimal toxicities on A549 and HDFa (fibroblast cells). The obtained results are very interesting and have shown that Qu-GNCs are promising anti-cancer agents as well as potential bio-imaging nanohybrids.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have shown a wide range of antibacterial activities over the last 2 decades. Conjugated AgNPs have attracted much interest among researchers for their properties which allow alterations of their physicochemical and biological properties. In this study, two potential stabilizing agents, flavonoids (kaempferol) and corticosteroids (hydrocortisone), were employed in the preparation of silver conjugated kaempferol and hydrocortisone nanoparticles (i.e., KH-AgNPs). The as-synthesized KH-AgNPs demonstrated a uniform spherical morphology by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results along with excellent stability and also shown strong bactericidal properties against different bacterial strains, including Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. The KH-AgNPs were characterized by UV–Visible and FTIR spectroscopy studies and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The KH-AgNPs activity was further analyzed by reactive oxygen species, live/dead bacterial assays, lactate dehydrogenase, and lipid peroxidation assays. The results have demonstrated the better antibacterial efficacy of the nanoparticles.

Ruthenium complexes have increased the scope for improvement in current cancer treatment by replacing platinum-based drugs. However, to reduce metal-associated toxicity, a biocompatible flavonoid, such as curcumin, is indispensable, as it offers uncompensated therapeutic benefits through formation of complexes. In this study, we synthesized metal-based flavonoid complexes using ruthenium(II) and curcumin by adopting a convenient reflux reaction, represented as Ru-Cur complexes. These complexes were thoroughly characterized using 1H, 13C NMR, XPS, FT-IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. As curcumin is sparingly soluble in water and has poor chemical stability, we loaded Ru-Cur complexes into liposomes and further formed nanoparticles (NPs) using the thin layer evaporation method. These were named Ru-Cur loaded liposome nanoparticles (RCLNPs). The effects of RCLNPs on cell proliferation was investigated using human cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa). These RCLNPs exhibited significant cytotoxicity in HeLa cells. The anticancer properties of RCLNPs were studied using reactive oxygen species (ROS), LDH, and MTT assays as well as live-dead staining. Nuclear damage studies of RCLNPs were performed in HeLa cells using the Hoechst staining assay.

Foodborne diseases are becoming major scientific struggles for both developing and developed countries. Most foodborne infections are caused by microbial pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and other food allergens. Hence early and accurate diagnosis of these foodborne pathogens is always preferable. To satisfy these concerns, plenty of isothermal amplification methodologies such as rolling circle amplification (RCA), helicase-dependent amplification (HDA), and recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) have been developed. Among these, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a widely usable, potential, and recognizable amplification technique achieved at a constant temperature around 60°C within 30–60 min by using only one kind of enzyme. As a robust gene amplification technique, it can be employed for the detection of bacteria, viruses, and other related food allergens. This technique has its own merits such as cost-effectiveness, facile manufacturing procedure, and consistency. In this chapter, we emphasize recent trends in designing the techniques, challenges, and the future prospects of LAMP in the detection of foodborne pathogens. These effective pathogen detection methods may offer potential benefits compared with existing conventional methods.

Three isoindigo-based conjugated polymers modified with linear hybrid siloxane-based side chains were synthesized (PIID-Cm-Si7, m = 5–7). All polymers showed good solubilities in halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers, alkanes, and esters. The polymer films of PIID-C5-Si7, PIID-C6-Si7, and PIID-C7-Si7 achieved mobilities of 0.32, 0.82, and 1.58 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively.

Developing nonchlorinated solvent-processed polymeric semiconductors to avoid environmental concerns and health hazards caused by chlorinated solvents is especially urgent. This study describes a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) for separating plasma from whole blood and measuring glucose concentration. A two-dimensional μPAD was fabricated by wax printing, using chromatographic paper and was functionalized by the incorporation of chitosan into the plasma separation zone. Red blood cells were isolated from whole blood in the plasma separation zone consisting of a chitosan polymer structure and a wax barrier. The separated plasma, with buffer, was injected into the test zone to cause a color change. The colorimetric results were digitized with a scanner, and the concentration was calculated using a calibration curve. This μPAD, which separated the plasma from whole blood without a separation membrane, will be useful for constructing point-of-care testing devices that detect analytes in small sample volumes.

Calcium (Ca2 +) as a signaling ion and intracellular second messenger plays a crucial role in living organisms for various cellular functions. In the present work, we have designed a novel yellow-fluorescent carbon dots (LERCDs) using lanthanum, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and rutin as precursors for the sensing of Ca2 + ions. In this sense, a combination of hydrothermal and reflux methods was adopted. The as-designed LERCDs display bright yellow color emission in the aqueous solutions with a high quantum yield (23.8%). The LERCDs showed excitation-independent emission property along with magnificent photostability and time stability. The LERCDs show potential fluorescence quenching response towards the Ca2+ ions in the concentration range of 0–25 μM with a detection limit of 2.19 μM. The LERCDs have studied for extracellular sensing of Ca2 + ions in both melanoma cell lines (A375) and onion epidermal cells by employing fluorescence microscopy. The LERCDs facilitate low cytotoxicity and superior biocompatibility features in A375 cells. The practicality of LERCDs was studied in biological samples like the human serum.

Six donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymers, P1–P6, based on the novel electron acceptors bis-isoindigo (BIID) and bis-azaisoindigo (BAID), were designed and synthesized for solution-processed organic field-effect transistors with high-performance optical and electrical properties. Energy level regulation was achieved by incorporation of nitrogen and fluorine heteroatoms and side chain optimization to reduce side chain density and extend branching point positions. Both the hole (μh) and electron mobilities (μe) significantly increased from P1 to P6, and there was an obvious transition from hole-dominated ambipolar charge transport behavior to highly-balanced ambipolar behavior. Since aza-substitution strengthened the electron-deficient property of the acceptor units, the entire molecular skeleton of BAID-based polymers has a high electron affinity and a low-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level according to ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. The μe of BAID-based polymers is an order of magnitude higher than that of BIID-based polymers. In addition, side chain optimization was shown to significantly influence intermolecular interactions and supramolecular self-assembly. The stepwise reduction of the π–π stacking distances of P1–P6 calculated by GIXRD curves supports this conclusion. Finally, in P6 (PBAID3-2FBT), a maximum absorption wavelength (λmax) was observed at 797 nm, a low optical band gap (Eg) of 1.27 eV, a low LUMO level of −3.90 eV, and an average μh and μe of 1.31 cm2 V−1 s−1. This paper offers an available molecular design strategy to achieve highly-balanced and high-performance ambipolar charge carrier transport D–A conjugated polymers.

In the process of developing a point-of-care testing device, we fabricated a plane heating element using carbon paste capable of thermal lysis. The plane heating element can generate heat of 150 °C within 60 s at 0.4 A power supply within 8 W. The developed plane heating element was very effective in the extraction of DNA from both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria which was further confirmed by agarose gel electrophoresis. In this approach, we aimed to eliminate expensive, time-consuming and labor-intensive procedures for the lysis of bacterial cells to extract nucleic acids to detect pathogenic bacteria accurately and swiftly.

A sensitive and low-cost colorimetric sensor array was developed to detect industrially important gases. We selected several target gases and indicators, and then used a printing method to fabricate an array to read the color value and to analyze the data. Using the printing method, various indicators can be produced in a uniform array on a desired substrate in a short time and at a low-cost. Four gases (ammonia, methylamine, trimethylamine, and hydrazine) and ten indicators were used to confirm the ability of the gas detection system. The color change of the dyes in the array was extracted in real time using an array reader with an integrated complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor. The developed gas detection system successfully detected gases using an array reader, which provided data for sensitive color changes in real time using the CMOS image sensor. This mechanism could be applied industrially for detecting toxic gases because the developed sensor is highly sensitive and inexpensive.

This research focuses on the design of biocompatible materials/scaffold suitable for use for tissue engineering. Porous fiber mats were produced through electrospinning of polythiophene phenylene (PThP) conducting polymers blended with poly(lactide- co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). A peptide containing an arginylglycylaspartic acid (RGD) fragment was synthesized using solid phase peptide synthesis and subsequently grafted onto a PThP polymer using azide-alkyne "click" chemistry. The obtained RGD functionalized PThP was also electrospun into a fiber mat. The electrospun mats' morphology, roughness and stiffness were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) and their electroactivity by cyclic voltammetry. The fibers show excellent cytocompatibility in culture assays with human dermal fibroblasts-adult (HDFa) and human epidermal melanocytes-adult (HEMa) cells. The electrospun fibers' roughness and stiffness changed after exposing the fiber mats to the cell culture medium (measured in dry state), but these changes did not affect the cell proliferation. The cytocompatibility of our porous scaffolds was established for their applicability as cell culture scaffolds by means of investigating mitochondrial activity of HDFa and HEMa cells on the scaffolds. The results revealed that the RGD moieties containing PThP scaffolds hold a promise in biomedical applications, including skin tissue engineering.

In this study, polyethersulfone (PES) paper embedded with a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) platform was developed for simultaneous DNA amplification and colorimetric detection. DNA was amplified using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) in isothermal conditions in the presence of the common magnesium-dependent colorimetric indicator, eriochrome black T (EBT), to detect DNA. Here, the DNA of Staphylococcus aureus was used as the DNA template. The developed device was successfully used to simultaneously amplify and detect the DNA by the naked eye within 30 min with a detection limit of 1 fg/µL.

Drugs need to be designed to access the designated intracellular organelle compartments in order to maximize anticancer efficacy. This study identified that covalently conjugated, non-covalent polyethylene glycol coated and encapsulated nanodrugs selectively influence drug uptake, the intracellular and extracellular trafficking of cancer cells. The types of nano conjugation modulated intracellular dynamics associated with differential impact on anti-cancer efficacy, but also induced differential cytotoxicity on cancer versus normal cells. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the importance of selecting the appropriate type of nano-conjugation for delivering organelle specific, active chemotherapeutic agents through controlled intracellular trafficking.

In recent years, the field of metal-based drugs has been dominated by other existing precious metal drugs, and many researchers have focused their attention on the synthesis of various ruthenium (Ru) complexes due to their potential medical and pharmaceutical applications. The beneficial properties of Ru, which make it a highly promising therapeutic agent, include its variable oxidation states, low toxicity, high selectivity for diseased cells, ligand exchange properties, and the ability to mimic iron binding to biomolecules. In addition, Ru complexes have favorable adsorption properties, along with excellent photochemical and photophysical properties, which make them promising tools for photodynamic therapy. At present, nanostructured materials functionalized with Ru complexes have become an efficient way to administer Ru-based anticancer drugs for cancer treatment. In this review, the recent developments in the nanostructured materials functionalized with Ru complexes for targeted drug delivery to tumors are discussed. In addition, information on "traditional" (ie, non-nanostructured) Ru-based cancer therapies is included in a precise manner.

Porous elastomer/polyaniline (PANI) composites with high stretchability and adjustable resistance were successfully fabricated using a facile immersion method. Nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and polyurethane (PU) sponges, which functioned as basic building blocks, were simply dipped into PANI solution. The weight fraction of PANI absorbed into the sponges monotonically increased with an increase in the number of immersion cycles, leading to the gradual decrease of electrical resistance. A NBR/PANI composite showed a high elongation at break of 250% even after 7 cycles of immersion and relatively small strain-dependent resistance change (190% at a 210% strain). This simple method to tune both mechanical stretchability and electrical resistance may be a useful means for the realization of organic stretchable conductors.

Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide health concern due to its high prevalence; almost 8.3% of the global population suffers from diabetes. It is a group of metabolic diseases classified by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Owing to the lack of simple diagnosis and treatment strategies, diabetes is a major cause of death worldwide, and more than 50% of cases remain undiagnosed. In addition, without timely diagnosis, diabetes-related complications and morbidity increase exponentially. Therefore, early diagnosis of diabetes is essential to prevent devastating complications. The current method of investigation requires a painful needle-prick to take blood, which could discourage individuals from seeking diagnosis. Recently, researchers have attempted to use patient saliva as a non-invasive method for identifying cases of diabetes. In this feature article, we discuss recent trends in the development of diagnostic tools for diabetes mellitus using patient saliva.

A real-time colorimetric sensor array (CSA) offers the advantages of diversity and accuracy for the quantification of multiple analytes; however, traditional sensors require a complex fabrication process. Therefore, to take full advantage of this sensing platform, we have developed a simple CSA system composed of a polymer, a reducing agent, and different pH indicators. Distinctive color response patterns were classified by extracting the hidden information, (i.e., red, green, and blue (RGB) values) from the indicators. This triple-channel sensing platform is further applied for statistical analysis, to quantify different concentrations of ammonia and other analytes. The sensor array showed a limit of detection of 0.3 ppm, which is well below the diagnostic criteria for ammonia concentration in the breath of healthy individuals and of patients with end-stage renal disease. As this sensor would be able to quantify gaseous ammonia in the breath, it is relevant to the point-of-care diagnosis of patients with renal diseases.

Ruthenium-quercetin conjugated nanoclusters (Ru-QC NCs) were synthesized via a one-pot reflux reaction. As inhalation of heavy metal ions like cobalt can lead to lung cancer, a fluorescent probe was designed for the determination of Co(II) both in aqueous solutions and living cells. The probe consists of hybrid nanoclusters with an average size of 2 nm that were prepared from ruthenium(II) ions and the flavonoid quercetin. These are termed as Ru-QC NCs. They display strong orange-colored emission with a peak at 558 nm under 465-nm excitation. The Ru-QC NCs are cell viable and enable imaging of cells and intracellular fluorometric detection of Co(II). The anticancer properties of Ru-QC NCs were screened by using non-small cell lung cancer (A549) and human dermal fibroblast (HDFa) cell lines. The Ru-QC NCs exert considerable cytotoxicity in A549 cells (at levels of 20–50 μg·mL−1), whereas no significant cytotoxicity was observed in case of HDFa cells. The anticancer properties of Ru-QC NCs were screened via MTT assay, live-dead staining, and ROS assay, respectively. Morphological changes of cancer cells were observed using atomic force microscopy. The fluorescent probe can detect Co(II) with a detection limit of 9.28 nM and with a linear response in the 0.03–100 μM concentration range.

The first example of an n-type [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT)-based semiconductor, D-(PhFCO)-BTBT, has been realized via a two-step transition metal-free process without using chromatographic purification. Physicochemical and optoelectronic characterizations of the new semiconductor were performed in detail, and the crystal structure was accessed. The new molecule exhibits a large optical band gap (similar to 2.9 eV) and highly stabilized (Delta E-LUMO = 1.54 eV)/pi-delocalized lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) mainly comprising the BTBT pi-core and in-plane carbonyl units. The effect of out-of-plane twisted (64 degrees) pentafluorophenyl groups on LUMO stabilization is found to be minimal. Polycrystalline D(PhFCO)-BTBT thin films prepared by physical vapor deposition exhibited large grains (similar to 2-5 mu m sizes) and "layer-by-layer" stacked edge-on oriented molecules with an in-plane herringbone packing (intermolecular distances similar to 3.25-3.46 angstrom) to favor two-dimensional (2D) source-to-drain (S -> D) charge transport. The corresponding TC/BG-OFET devices demonstrated high electron mobilities of up to similar to 0.6 cm(2)/V.s and I-on/I-off ratios over 10(7)-10(8). These results demonstrate that the large band gap BTBT pi-core is a promising candidate for high-mobility n-type organic semiconductors and, combination of very large intrinsic charge transport capabilities and optical transparency, may open a new perspective for next-generation unconventional (opto)electronics.

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) reported that approximately one-third of all produced foods (1.3 billion tons of edible food) for human consumption is lost and wasted every year across the entire supply chain. Significant impacts of food loss and waste (FLW) have increased interest in establishing prevention programs around the world. This paper aims to provide an overview of FLW occurrence and prevention. Economic, political, cultural, and socio-demographic drivers of FLW are described, highlighting the global variation. This approach might be particularly helpful for scientists, governors, and policy makers to identify the global variation and to focus on future implications. The main focus here was to identify the cause of the FLW occurrence throughout the food supply chain. We have created a framework for FLW occurrence at each stage of the food supply chain. Several feasible solutions are provided based on the framework.

In this study, we demonstrate a novel wax-patterned paper-polymer centrifugal optical system for performing multiple biomedical tests. The system consists of a detector (photodiode, LED), a diagnostic disc (paper, plastic) and a DC motor, allowing monitoring of changes in real time absorbance. Here, a wax printer was used to form hydrophobic channels on paper. The diagnostic disc can be prepared by attaching wax-patterned paper to a plastic disc. After the diagnostic disc is mounted on the dc motor, the fluid first wets the wax-patterned paper by centrifugal force, slowly moves by capillary action, and the reaction proceeds in the reaction zone with enzyme and color indicator. Microfluidic devices prepared in the wax-patterned paper have several attractive features such as low cost, ease of use, disposability and portability. In addition, the centrifugal disk-based platform can provide a solution for high-efficiency analysis that can process multiple reactions in parallel and monitor reactions in real time. To demonstrate the usability of this system, we performed realtime monitoring of glucose, an important indicator of blood glucose. The detection results could be delivered with the calibration curve within 10 seconds and no complex image analysis was required. The developed wax-patterned paperpolymer centrifugal optical system is promising for clinical multianalyte point-of-care testing due to its ease of manufacture, ease of operation, low cost and high sensitivity.
