We propose a novel approach to realize unidirectional radiation in an asymmetric single resonator without using an external mirror, which is based on mutual coupling between two degenerate resonant modes through the background scattering of the asymmetric resonator.

The commercialization of quantum key distribution (QKD), which enables secure communication even in the era of quantum computers, has acquired significant interest. In particular, plug-and-play (PnP) QKD has garnered considerable attention owing to its advantage in system stabilization. However, a PnP QKD system has limitations on miniaturization owing to a bulky storage line (SL) of tens of kilometers. And, the secure key rate is relatively low because Bob transmits the signal pulses only at the dedicated time slots to circumvent backscattering noise. This study proposes a new method that can eliminate the SL by realizing an optical pulse train generator based on an optical cavity structure. Our method allows Alice to generate optical pulse trains herself by duplicating Bob’s seed pulse and excludes the need for Bob’s strong signal pulses that trigger backscattering noise as much as the conventional PnP QKD. Accordingly, our method can naturally overcome the miniaturization limitation and the slow secure key rate, as the storage line is no longer necessary. We conducted a proof-of-concept experiment using our method and achieved a key generation rate of 1.6×10−3 count/pulse and quantum bit error rate ≤ 5%.

This study investigates the effect of driving frequency on the ability of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to reduce the radar cross section (RCS) in the Ku -band. Analysis based on the Drude model suggests that the electron density of the plasma will increase with the driving frequency, implying that the plasma will be more effective in terms of RCS reduction. Experimental results based on a multifingered DBD generator reveal that an RCS reduction of up to 4.1 dB is achieved at 18 GHz, which is a 1.3 dB increase due to increasing the driving frequency from 1 to 2 kHz. Finally, the electron density, which is extracted by fitting the simulated RCS results, increased by as much as approximately 330% due to the increase in the driving frequency from 1 to 2 kHz. As the driving frequency increases, the frequency of collision between plasma particles increases. Therefore, the ionization of gas molecules is enhanced, resulting in a higher electron density. The experimental results also suggest that enhancement in the RCS reduction is larger when the electric field intensity between the two electrodes of the DBD generator is greater. As a result, the plasma becomes electromagnetically more lossy and is more effective for reducing the RCS. Experimental results are provided and analyzed based on the electromagnetic parameters used for modeling the plasma.

We report the results of searching pulsar-like candidates from the unidentified objects in the Third Catalog of Hard Fermi-LAT Sources (3FHL). Using a machine-learning-based classification scheme with a nominal accuracy of $\sim \!98{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$, we have selected 27 pulsar-like objects from 200 unidentified 3FHL sources for an identification campaign. Using archival data, X-ray sources are found within the γ-ray error ellipses of 10 3FHL pulsar-like candidates. Within the error circles of the much better constrained X-ray positions, we have also searched for the optical/infrared counterparts and examined their spectral energy distributions. Among our shortlisted candidates, the most secure identification is the association of 3FHL J1823.3–1339 and its X-ray counterpart with the globular cluster Mercer 5. The γ-rays from the source can be contributed by a population of millisecond pulsars residing in the cluster. This makes Mercer 5 as one of the slowly growing hard γ-ray population of globular clusters with emission >10 GeV. Very recently, another candidate picked by our classification scheme, 3FHL J1405.1–6118, has been identified as a new γ-ray binary with an orbital period of 13.7 d. Our X-ray analysis with a short Chandra observation has found a possible periodic signal candidate of ∼1.4 h and a putative extended X-ray tail of ∼20 arcsec long. Spectral energy distribution of its optical/infrared counterpart conforms with a blackbody of Tbb ∼ 40 000 K and Rbb ∼ 12 R⊙ at a distance of 7.7 kpc. This is consistent with its identification as an early O star as found by infrared spectroscopy.

Novel BODIPY photosensitizers were developed for imaging-guided photodynamic therapy. The introduction of a strong electron donor to the BODIPY core through a phenyl linker combined with the twisted arrangement between the donor and the BODIPY acceptor is essential for reducing the energy gap between the lowest singlet excited state and the lowest triplet state (ΔEST ), leading to a significant enhancement in the intersystem crossing (ISC) of the BODIPYs. Remarkably, the BDP-5 with the smallest ΔEST (ca. 0.44 eV) exhibited excellent singlet oxygen generation capabilities in both organic and aqueous solutions. BDP-5 also displayed bright emission in the far-red/near-infrared region in the condensed states. More importantly, both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that BDP-5 NPs displayed a high potential for photodynamic cancer therapy and bioimaging.

The quantum key distribution (QKD) research, which is drawing attention as the next secure communication, is actively expanding from point to point system to network architecture. In QKD network system, it is important to increase the number of users who can securely communicate. Up to date, a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) architecture has successfully expanded the number of channels without significant system loss, but there is a limitation of increasing channels considering the range of telecommunication wavelength and crosstalk noise, etc. In this article, we propose a polarizing division method that increases user channels independently of wavelengths. The proposed architecture can increase the number of wavelength multiplexed channels by a multiple of the polarization number. We identify the issues in the QKD network system that may occur when using polarization and wavelengths simultaneously, then provide solutions and optimize the system operation accordingly. Finally, we describe a field test result of a one to many QKD network system that shows successful key exchange with 3% QBER.

We demonstrate integrated photonic circuits for quantum devices using sputtered polycrystalline aluminum nitride (AlN) on insulator. The on-chip AlN waveguide directional couplers, which are one of the most important components in quantum photonics, are fabricated and show the output power splitting ratios from 50:50 to 99:1. The polarization beam splitters with an extinction ratio of more than 10 dB are also realized from the AlN directional couplers. Using the fabricated AlN waveguide beam splitters, we observe the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a visibility of 91.7 +(-) 5.66 %., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We experimentally demonstrated the broadband absorption enhancement of monolayer graphene embedded in the center of a dielectric cavity of the prism coupling configuration in the visible spectral range. The absorption peak is enhanced up to 86.1% at λ = 650 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 314 nm (from 542 nm to 856 nm). The absorption performance is the best experimental result for monolayer graphene in the visible range, to the best of knowledge. The improved absorption is attributed to enhanced light-graphene interaction via the cavity mode formed in the dielectric layer with the properly chosen graphene position. The proposed structure is suitable to a high-efficiency broadband photodetector based on monolayer graphene due to the simple fabrication process and the high fabrication tolerance.

We investigated on the interaction between a single guided-mode resonance and Fabry–Perot resonance (FPR) in a high contrast grating (HCG) from a viewpoint of Fano resonance. It has been found that the background reflection due to the FPR in the HCG is useful to implement flat-top broadband reflectors via tailoring the phase polarity of Fano resonance. The novel conceptual approach was elucidated theoretically with the temporal coupled-mode theory (TCMT), which was confirmed by the Si HCG broadband reflector design of 380-nm bandwidth for R > 99.9 from 1400 to 1780 nm (a fractional bandwidth of 24.5%). The TCMT model was in good agreement with the rigorous coupled wave analysis calculation. We believe that our approach provides expanded understanding on Fano resonance in a grating, enabling more intuitive and simpler design of a flat-top broadband reflector with grating structures.

We propose the narrowband perfect absorbers with enormously high fabrication tolerance, which consists of a low-contrast grating and a finite distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) layer with an ultrathin absorbing medium (graphene). It is numerically shown that the proposed perfect absorber outperforms the previously proposed schemes in fabrication tolerance. According to the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) and coupled mode theory (CMT) fitting, over a considerably wide range of grating width and thickness, the proposed absorber provides a proper ratio of leakage rate to loss rate while preserving resonant condition, so that almost perfect absorption (>99.9%) can be obtained. This result is attributed to the strong electric field confinement in the DBR region rather than the grating layer owing to lower index of grating compared to DBR. In addition, without degrading the fabrication tolerance, the bandwidth of the proposed absorber can be controlled by the DBR thickness (the number of pairs) and a narrow absorbing bandwidth of sub-nanometer is achieved with 8.5 Si/SiO2 pair stacked DBR.

This paper presents an investigation of the electromagnetic signature and the coupling mechanism of quadcopter drones with incident electromagnetic (EM) wave and radar cross section (RCS) analysis. Coupling analysis is performed based on the dominant coupling path: when an incident EM wave with a magnitude of 50 kV/m contacts a commercial quadcopter drone, its motor power wires are identified as the dominant coupling path. Higher coupling voltages are obtained for frequencies that have large impedance values at both ends of the load on the motor power wire. This induced voltage can affect the integrated circuit chip on a printed circuit board, as well as parallel plate resonances. Furthermore, the RCS of a quadcopter drone is measured in the frequency range of 0.5-3 GHz. The internal-component vulnerability characteristics of quadcopters can spike at specific frequencies with high RCS values and can be analyzed with or without motor power wires. We verified these hypotheses via 2D inverse synthetic aperture radar images, and we analyzed the results by comparing the empirical and full-wave simulation values.

A series of green-emitting fluorophores based on a tetra-azaacene core is synthesized by introducing nitrile substituents at different positions. Their molecular structure-optical property relationship [i.e., vibronic transitions in photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) spectra] is investigated to obtain a sharp emission where the vibronic peak ν0-0 should be intensified by suppressing ν0-n (n = 1, 2, 3...) transitions. The intensity ratios (I0-1/I0-0) of the ν0-1 and ν0-0 vibronic transitions in the PL spectra of DBBNP, DBBNP2CN1, and DBBNP2CN2 in hexane are 1.13, 0.80, and 0.67, respectively. Theoretical calculations explain that the CN substitution at positions 8 and 13 in DBBNP2CN2 induces a uniform charge distribution and reduces the Huang-Rhys factors (HRFs) of the vibrational normal modes coupled to the electronic transition. The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) fabricated with DBBNP2CN2 shows a narrower green EL emission at 518 nm with a smaller bandwidth (50 nm) than those of devices adopting DBBNP or DBBNP2CN1. The careful modification of the molecular structures and positions of substituents enables us to reduce the HRFs of vibrations to achieve a narrow emission bandwidth with decreased I0-1/I0-0, which suggests a design strategy to develop narrowband organic fluorophores to improve the color purity for wide-gamut OLED displays.

Organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials are emerging as potential candidates for time-resolved fluorescence imaging in biological systems. However, the development of purely organic TADF materials with bright aggregated-state emissions in the red/near-infrared (NIR) region remains challenging. Here, we report three donor-acceptor-type TADF molecules as promising candidates for time-resolved fluorescence imaging, which are engineered by direct connection of electron-donating moieties (phenoxazine or phenothiazine) and an electron-acceptor 1,8-naphthalimide (NI). Theoretically and experimentally, we elucidate that three TADF materials possessed remarkably small ΔEST to promote the occurrence of reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). Moreover, they all exhibit aggregation-induced red emissions and long delayed fluorescence lifetimes without the influence of molecular oxygen. More importantly, these long-lived and biocompatible TADF materials, especially the phenoxazine-substituted NI fluorophores, show great potential for high-contrast fluorescence lifetime imaging in living cells. This study provides further a molecular design strategy for purely organic TADF materials and expands the versatile biological application of long-lived fluorescence research in time-resolved luminescence imaging.

An orbital angular momentum (OAM) dividable on-chip directional coupler design is proposed. To guide OAM modes of topological charge number l = ±1, a waveguide needs to support TE01 and TE10 modes with degeneracy. When a directional coupler is made with such an OAM mode waveguide, it is additionally required to equalize the horizontal-direction coupling strengths of those two OAM constitutive eigenmodes. Base on the coupled mode theory formulation, we have found that this requirement can hardly be satisfied and devised a modified cross-shaped waveguide structure to solve this problem. An example design of OAM mode directional coupler is demonstrated. The coupling length of the designed device is 670 µm, and our numerical simulation showed negligible degradation of OAM mode purity during the operation of complete optical power transfer between two waveguides. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first proposal of the on-chip OAM mode directional coupler. The proposed design approach can be applied to implement various devices for OAM mode-based photonic integrated circuits.

In this paper, we have proposed a plug-and-play twin-field quantum key distribution scheme that has passive mode-matching characteristics of quantum signals and can be operated stably. Also, we have experimentally demonstrated the implementation feasibility of our proposed scheme.

A systematic knowledge of the roles of DNA repair genes at the level of the organism has been limited due to the lack of appropriate experimental techniques. Here, we generated zebrafish loss-of-function mutants for 32 DNA repair and replication genes through multiplexed CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis. High-throughput phenotypic characterization of our mutant collection revealed that three genes (atad5a, ddb1, pcna) are essential for proper embryonic development and hematopoiesis; seven genes (apex1, atrip, ino80, mre11a, shfm1, telo2, wrn) are required for growth and development during juvenile stage and six genes (blm, brca2, fanci, rad51, rad54l, rtel1) play critical roles in sex development. Furthermore, mutation in six genes (atad5a, brca2, polk, rad51, shfm1, xrcc1) displayed hypersensitivity to DNA damage agents. Further characterization of atad5a−/− mutants demonstrate that Atad5a is required for normal brain development and hematopoiesis. Our zebrafish mutant collection provides a unique resource for understanding of the roles of DNA repair genes at the organismal level.

R-loops are formed when replicative forks collide with the transcriptional machinery and can cause genomic instability. However, it is unclear how R-loops are regulated at transcription-replication conflict (TRC) sites and how replisome proteins are regulated to prevent R-loop formation or mediate R-loop tolerance. Here, we report that ATAD5, a PCNA unloader, plays dual functions to reduce R-loops both under normal and replication stress conditions. ATAD5 interacts with RNA helicases such as DDX1, DDX5, DDX21 and DHX9 and increases the abundance of these helicases at replication forks to facilitate R-loop resolution. Depletion of ATAD5 or ATAD5-interacting RNA helicases consistently increases R-loops during the S phase and reduces the replication rate, both of which are enhanced by replication stress. In addition to R-loop resolution, ATAD5 prevents the generation of new R-loops behind the replication forks by unloading PCNA which, otherwise, accumulates and persists on DNA, causing a collision with the transcription machinery. Depletion of ATAD5 reduces transcription rates due to PCNA accumulation. Consistent with the role of ATAD5 and RNA helicases in maintaining genomic integrity by regulating R-loops, the corresponding genes were mutated or downregulated in several human tumors.

This paper presents an airflow analysis and a shielding effectiveness (SE) analysis for a multilayered waveguide-below-cutoff array (WBCA) used to prevent electromagnetic penetration. The performance of the conventional unit square WBCA and the multilayered WBCA is compared. For the airflow analysis, the simulations are performed at the entrance and exit of the shielding structure when an airflow velocity of 1 m/s is injected at the inlet. The velocity loss and pressure difference of the multilayered WBCA are improved compared with the unit square WBCA. In terms of the shielding, the SE of the multilayered WBCA is compensated by increasing the number of overlapping layers. Furthermore, a new SE equation is derived by modifying that of the unit square WBCA.

Under atmospheric pressure, dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) with a plasma layer is utilized to produce large-volume plasma without a vessel. When a 16-kV bias at 1 kHz is applied to 85 copper strips, the DBD actuator generates plasma with the dimensions 170 × 170 × 1 mm. When the incident wave with an electric wave vector perpendicular to the strip array is illuminated, the monostatic radar cross section (RCS) is reduced by a maximum of 3.5 dB. The measured results are validated using full-wave simulation based on homogeneous plasma, with estimated plasma parameters. By changing the number of copper strips connected to the feed line, the relative volume of plasma can be changed. If the relative volume decreases by 20%, the maximum RCS reduction is reduced by nearly 20%. This demonstrates the possibility of using plasma to control monostatic RCS in a wide bandwidth.

Dissolved ions have a significant effect on the chemical equilibria and kinetics in aqueous solutions by changing the physical properties and hydrogen bond network of water. In this work, the ionic effects on the excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reactions of Coumarin 183 (C183) in aqueous ionic solutions are comprehensively studied in terms of pKa, pKa*, activation energies, and kinetic isotope effect (KIE). The acid dissociation constants (pKa and pKa*) of C183 on the ground and excited states are determined by UV–visible absorption and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. The activation energies (Ea) and KIE for the ESPT reaction of C183 are directly obtained by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The changes in pKa, pKa*, Ea, and KIE values of C183 are found to be dependent on the charge density of cations. Surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD), which is widely used to control turbulence in aerodynamics, has a significant effect on the radar cross-section (RCS). A four-way linearly synthesized SDBD air plasma actuator is designed to bolster the plasma effects on electromagnetic waves. The diffraction angle is calculated to predict the RCS because of the periodic structure of staggered electrodes. The simplified plasma modeling is utilized to calculate the inhomogeneous surface plasma distribution. Monostatic RCS shows the diffraction in the plane perpendicular to the electrode array and the notable distortion by plasma. In comparison, the overall pattern is maintained in the parallel plane with minor plasma effects. The trends also appear in the bistatic RCS, which has a significant difference in the observation plane perpendicular to the electrodes. The peaks by Bragg’s diffraction are shown, and the RCS is reduced by 10 dB in a certain range by the plasma effect. The diffraction caused by the actuator and the inhomogeneous air plasma should be considered in designing an SDBD actuator for a wide range of application.

We have implemented a practical plug-and-play measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI QKD) system with polarization division multiplexing (PDM). MDI QKD is known as a secure protocol that can inherently prevent detection loopholes. Significant efforts have been made toward implementing MDI QKD systems. Recently, a plug-and-play architecture has been proposed for implementing the MDI QKD system, and its feasibility has been experimentally verified in both free space and fiber channel. However, in order to apply it to the real world, it is necessary to develop a more practical architecture including multiplexing methods and self-compensation techniques. In this paper, we have proposed and implemented a practical plug-and-play MDI QKD architecture that can be implemented regardless of whether the quantum channel lengths of Alice and Bob are symmetric or asymmetric using PDM and can be operated even under ambient-temperature-changing environments through an optical path-length self-compensation technique. Experimentally, we have achieved $6.25\times 10^{-6}$ bits per pulse as the key rate and the quantum bit error rates under 3% on 25-km quantum channels.

This work demonstrates attenuation effects of plasma on waves propagating in the 26.5–40 GHz range. The effect is investigated via experiments measuring the transmission between two Ka-band horn antennas set 30 cm apart. A dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) plasma generator with a size of 200 mm × 100 mm × 70 mm and consisting of 20 layers of electrodes is placed between the two antennas. The DBD generator is placed in a 400 mm × 300 mm × 400 mm acrylic chamber so that the experiments can be performed for plasma generated under various conditions of gas and pressure, for instance, in air, Ar, and He environments at 0.001, 0.05, and 1 atm of pressure. Attenuation is calculated by the difference in the transmission level, with and without plasma, which is generated with a bias voltage of 20 kV in the 0.1–1.4 kHz range. Results show that the attenuation varies from 0.05 dB/m to 9.0 dB/m depending on the environment. Noble gas environments show higher levels of attenuation than air, and He is lossier than Ar. In all gas environments, attenuation increases as pressure increases. Finally, electromagnetic models of plasmas generated in various conditions are provided.
