The core-mantle boundary (CMB) is a complex and poorly understood region of the Earth. The existence of melt or partial melt at the CMB is strongly debated with evidence coming from a range of sources. While partial melt has been inferred in specific locations using seismology, often as an explanation for ultra-low velocity zones (ULVZs), no global layer of melt has been observed despite evidence that such melt should accumulate at the CMB.Using high frequency synthetic seismograms we have systematically examined the effect of a one-dimensional melt layer at the CMB on the global seismic wavefield. We find that PKKP diffracted waves are an extremely sensitive, robust and previously underutilised seismic phase for studying the CMB and, in synthetic testing, could resolve very thin melt layers. We have constructed a global data set of PKKP diffracted observations to attempt to observe or exclude melt at the CMB. We find that within the bounds of our data, we are unable to robustly exclude or observe a melt layer at the CMB on the order of single kilometres thick. The presence of a thin layer of unobservable melt at the CMB would have profound impacts for the internal dynamics of the Earth.

SUMMARY Seismic observations indicate that the lowermost mantle above the core–mantle boundary (CMB) is strongly heterogeneous. Body waves reveal a variety of ultra-low velocity zones (ULVZs), which extend not more than 100 km above the CMB and have shear velocity reductions of up to 30 per cent. While the nature and origin of these ULVZs remain uncertain, some have suggested they are evidence of partial melting at the base of mantle plumes. Here we use coupled geodynamic/thermodynamic modelling to explore the hypothesis that present-day deep mantle melting creates ULVZs and introduces compositional heterogeneity in the mantle. Our models explore the generation and migration of melt in a deforming and compacting host rock at the base of a plume in the lowermost mantle. We test whether the balance of gravitational and viscous forces can generate partially molten zones that are consistent with the seismic observations. We find that for a wide range of plausible melt densities, permeabilities and viscosities, lower mantle melt is too dense to be stirred into convective flow and instead sinks down to form a completely molten layer, which is inconsistent with observations of ULVZs. Only if melt is less dense or at most ca. 1 per cent more dense than the solid, or if melt pockets are trapped within the solid, can melt remain suspended in the partial melt zone. In these cases, seismic velocities would be reduced in a cone at the base of the plume. Generally, we find partial melt alone does not explain the observed ULVZ morphologies and solid-state compositional variation is required to explain the anomalies. Our findings provide a framework for testing whether seismically observed ULVZ shapes are consistent with a partial melt origin, which is an important step towards constraining the nature of the heterogeneities in the lowermost mantle and their influence on the thermal, compositional and dynamic evolution of the Earth.

Geophysical analysis of the Earth’s lower mantle has revealed the presence of two superstructures characterized by low shear wave velocities on the core-mantle boundary. These Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs) play a crucial role in the dynamics of the lower mantle and act as the source region for deep-seated mantle plumes. However, their origin, and the characteristics of the surrounding deep mantle, remain enigmatic. Mantle plumes located above the margins of the LLSVPs display evidence for the presence of this deep-seated, thermally and/or chemically heterogeneous mantle material ascending into the melting region. As a result, analysis of the spatial geochemical heterogeneity in OIBs provides constraints on the structure of the Earth’s lower mantle and the origin of the LLSVPs. In this study, we focus on the Galápagos Archipelago in the eastern Pacific, where bilateral asymmetry in the radiogenic isotopic composition of erupted basalts has been linked to the presence of LLSVP material in the underlying plume. We show, using spatial variations in the major element contents of high-MgO basalts, that the isotopically enriched south-western region of the Galápagos mantle – assigned to melting of LLSVP material – displays no evidence for lithological heterogeneity in the mantle source. As such, it is unlikely that the Pacific LLSVP represents a pile of subducted oceanic crust. Clear evidence for a lithologically heterogeneous mantle source is, however, found in the north-central Galápagos, indicating that a recycled crustal component is present near the eastern margin of the Pacific LLSVP, consistent with seismic observations.

The lowermost mantle right above the core-mantle boundary is highly heterogeneous containing multiple poorly understood seismic features. The smallest but most extreme heterogeneities yet observed are 'Ultra-Low Velocity Zones' (ULVZ). We exploit seismic shear waves that diffract along the core-mantle boundary to provide new insight into these enigmatic structures. We measure a rare core-diffracted signal refracted by a ULVZ at the base of the Hawaiian mantle plume at unprecedentedly high frequencies. This signal shows remarkably longer time delays at higher compared to lower frequencies, indicating a pronounced internal variability inside the ULVZ. Utilizing the latest computational advances in 3D waveform modeling, here we show that we are able to model this high-frequency signal and constrain high-resolution ULVZ structure on the scale of kilometers, for the first time. This new observation suggests a chemically distinct ULVZ with increasing iron content towards the core-mantle boundary, which has implications for Earth's early evolutionary history and core-mantle interaction.

Perhaps the least ambiguous signal that the mantle is convecting comes from observations of seismic anisotropy – the variation of wave speed with direction – which must arise due to the ordering of material as deformation occurs. Therefore, significant effort has been made over many years to infer the direction and nature of mantle flow from these data. Observations have focused on the boundary layers of the mantle, where deformation is expected to be strongest and where anisotropy is usually present. While prospects for mapping flow seem good, the lack of knowledge of several key issues currently holds back progress. These include the cause of anisotropy in the lowermost mantle, the causative material's response to shear, and the single-crystal or -phase seismic properties of the causative materials. In this chapter we review recent observations of lowermost mantle anisotropy, constraints on mineral elasticity and deformation mechanisms, and challenges in linking geodynamic modeling with seismic observations.

Africa’s Cenozoic tectonism is often attributed to mantle plumes, particularly below East Africa, but their morphology, number, location, and impact on the African lithosphere are debated. The broad slow wavespeed African Superplume, ubiquitous in large-scale tomographic models, originates below South Africa, reaching the surface somewhere below East Africa. However, whether the diverse East African mantle geochemistry is best reconciled with one heterogeneous upwelling, or current tomographic models lack the resolution to image multiple distinct plumes, remains enigmatic. S-wavespeed tomographic images of Africa are legion, but higher-frequency P-wavespeed whole-mantle models possessing complementary diagnostic capabilities are comparatively lacking. This hinders attempts to disentangle the effects of Cenozoic hotspot tectonism and Pan African (and older) tectonic events on the East African lithosphere. Here we develop a continental-scale P-wave tomographic model capable of resolving structure from upper-to-lower mantle depths using a recently-developed technique to extract absolute arrival-times from noisy, temporary African seismograph deployments. Shallow-mantle wavespeeds are δVP ≈–4% below Ethiopia, but less anomalous (δVP ≥–2%) below other volcanic provinces. The heterogeneous African Superplume reaches the upper mantle below the Kenyan plateau. Below Ethiopia/Afar we image a second sub-vertical slow wavespeed anomaly rooted near the core-mantle boundary outside the African LLVP, meaning multiple disparately sourced whole-mantle plumes may influence East African magmatism. In contrast to other African cratons, wavespeeds below Tanzania are only fast to 90–135km depth. When interpreted alongside Lower Eocene on-craton kimberlites, our results support pervasive metasomatic lithospheric modification caused by subduction during the Neoproterozoic Pan-African orogeny.

This signal shows remarkably longer time delays compared to lower frequencies, indicating extreme internal variability within the Hawaiian ULVZ. Utilizing the latest computational advances in 3D synthetic waveform modeling, we are able to model this high frequency signal and constrain high-resolution structure on the scale of kilometers at the core-mantle boundary, for the first time. Results reveal that the lowermost part of the Hawaiian ULVZ is extremely reduced in shear wave velocity, by up to -40%. This new observation suggests a chemically distinct ULVZ with increasing iron content towards the core-mantle boundary, which has implications for Earth’s early evolutionary history and core-mantle interaction.

The interior of a planet holds important clues to its origin and thermal and dynamic evolution. Exploring a planet's deeper layers can reveal how a planet accreted and differentiated into layers, whether its core sustains a geodynamo that creates a magnetic field, and what the origin is of any tectonic and volcanic activity. New clues are now uncovered for Mars. On pages 438, 434, and 443 of this issue, Knapmeyer-Endrun et al. (1), Khan et al. (2), and Stähler et al. (3), respectively, present the first findings of the interior structure of Mars based on data from the NASA lander InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport). These studies provide the first direct observations of the crust, mantle, and core structure on another rocky planet, for which the results and implications can be compared and contrasted with the characteristics of Earth.

We investigate the mantle transition zone beneath the Chile‐Argentina flat subduction region by means of P‐to‐S conversions at mantle discontinuities from teleseismic events recorded at 103 seismic stations. From the analysis of receiver functions, we obtain clear converted phases from the 410 and 660 discontinuities, and we identify a robust precursory signal to P660s, of negative amplitude, that we name P590s. We observe little frequency dependence in the amplitude of the P410s converted phase, while the P660s is less visible toward higher frequencies. The 410 is on average deeper than 410 km by 10 ± 1 km in the higher‐frequency bands, and it is relatively sharp, being consistent with a 10% velocity jump over less than 20 km. The observed 660 depth varies with frequency; it is deeper by up to 18 ± 2 km for lower frequencies and close to reference at higher frequencies, being consistent with a 13% broad velocity gradient over 30–40 km, probably caused by a composite of multiple phase transitions. The transition zone thickness is controlled by the frequency‐dependent depth variability of the 660. Our findings of relative depth, width, and velocity jump of the detected discontinuities, combined with tomographic images of the mantle transition zone, cannot be explained by thermal variations alone. Compositional constraints from mineral physics show that a near pyrolitic mantle is consistent with the ratio of the estimated velocity jumps. However, the negative P590s phase in this region could be signal from the velocity reduction due to basalt accumulation at the base of the transition zone.

We use core reflected ScS waves sensitive to a broad region of the core-mantle boundary beneath Hawaii to create the first high-resolution map of the Hawaiian ultralow-velocity zone (ULVZ). Positive ScS-S differential times are used to identify regions of strong slow velocity anomalies in the lowermost mantle, and the presence of pre/post-cursors around the main ScS phase confirms the sharp top of a basal ULVZ layer. Pre/post-cursor arrivals are mapped into a volume across their region of sensitivity to produce a detailed image of ULVZ morphology. The variability observed across the ULVZ can be interpreted in terms of varying height or velocity reduction, but the large range of velocity variations required to explain observations suggests that most variability reflects varying layer thickness. The Hawaiian ULVZ is observed to be a large-scale regional feature of varying height (∼5-25 km) extending across a wide area along the edge of the Pacific large low-velocity province (LLVP). Variability in previous models of the Hawaiian ULVZ can be explained by studies imaging different parts of this strongly variable, large-scale feature. Maximum ULVZ thicknesses (no taller than 30 km) are found in a flat-topped, steep-sided region on the order of 1000 km in diameter located west of Hawaii. This feature is coincident with the previously identified Hawaiian mega-ULVZ, and is interpreted to represent the root of the Hawaiian plume, which is offset from the volcanic surface expression. A tall, asymmetric ridge of ULVZ material is observed to the east of Hawaii. Both regions of maximum ULVZ heights are bounded by the Pacific LLVP to the south, and fast seismic velocity anomalies interpreted as slab remnants to the north. This points to a potential geodynamical scenario where dense ULVZ material is pushed by subducted slab remnants into thicker piles against LLVP margins.

The Hawaiian Island chain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is a well-studied example of hotspot volcanism caused by an underlying upwelling mantle plume. The thermal and compositional nature of the plume alters the mantle phase transitions, which can be seen in the depth and amplitude of seismic discontinuities. This study utilises >5000 high quality receiver functions from Hawaiian island stations to detect P-to-s converted phases to image seismic discontinuities between 200 to 800 km depth. Common-conversion point stacks of the data are used to map out lateral variations in converted phase observations, while slowness stacks allow differentiation between true conversions from discontinuities and multiples. We find that the 410 discontinuity is depressed by 20 km throughout our study region, while the main 660 is around average depth throughout most of the area. To the southwest of the Big Island we observe splitting of the 660, with a major peak at 630 km, and a minor peak appearing at 675 km depth. This is inferred to represent the position of the hot plume at depth, with the upper discontinuity caused by an olivine phase transition and the lower by a garnet phase transition. In the upper mantle, a discontinuity is found across the region at depths varying between 290 to 350 km. Identifying multiples from this depth confirms the presence of a so-called X-discontinuity. To the east of the Big Island the X-discontinuity lies around 336 km and the associated multiple is particularly coherent and strong in amplitude. Strikingly, the discontinuity around 410 km disappears in this area. Synthetic modelling reveals that such observations can be explained by a silica phase transition from coesite to stishovite, consistent with widespread ponding of silica-saturated material at these depths around the plume. This material could represent eclogite enriched material, which is relatively silica-rich compared to pyrolite, spreading out from the plume to the east as a deep eclogite pool, a hypothesis which is consistent with dynamical models of thermochemical plumes. Therefore these results support the presence of a significant garnet and eclogite component within the Hawaiian mantle plume.

The mantle transition zone is delineated by seismic discontinuities around 410 and 660 km, which are generally related to mineral phase transitions. Study of the topography of the discontinuities further constrains which phase transitions play a role and, combined with their Clapeyron slopes, what temperature variations occur. Here we use P to S converted seismic waves or receiver functions to study the topography of the mantle seismic discontinuities beneath Europe and the effect of subducting and ponding slabs beneath southern Europe on these features. We combine roughly 28,000 of the highest quality receiver functions into a common conversion point stack. In the topography of the discontinuity around 660 km, we find broadscale depressions of 30 km beneath central Europe and around the Mediterranean. These depressions do not correlate with any topography on the discontinuity around 410 km. Explaining these strong depressions by purely thermal effects on the dissociation of ringwoodite to bridgmanite and periclase requires unrealistically large temperature reductions. Presence of several wt % water in ringwoodite leads to a deeper phase transition, but complementary observations, such as elevated Vp/Vs ratio, attenuation, and electrical conductivity, are not observed beneath central Europe. Our preferred hypothesis is the dissociation of ringwoodite into akimotoite and periclase in cold downwelling slabs at the bottom of the transition zone. The strongly negative Clapeyron slope predicted for the subsequent transition of akimotoite to bridgmanite explains the depression with a temperature reduction of 200-300 K and provides a mechanism to pond slabs in the first place.

Large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs), whose origin and dynamic implication remain enigmatic, dominate the lowermost mantle. For decades, seismologists have created increasingly detailed pictures of the LLSVPs through tomographic models constructed with different modeling methodologies, data sets, parametrizations and regularizations. Here, we extend the cluster analysis methodology of Lekic $\textit{et al.}$, to classify seismic mantle structure in five recent global shear wave speed ($\textit{V}_S$) tomographic models into three groups. By restricting the analysis to moving depth windows of the radial profiles of $\textit{V}_S$, we assess the vertical extent of features. We also show that three clusters are better than two (or four) when representing the entire lower mantle, as the boundaries of the three clusters more closely follow regions of high lateral $\textit{V}_S$ gradients. Qualitatively, we relate the anomalously slow cluster to the LLSVPs, the anomalously fast cluster to slab material entering the lower mantle and the neutral cluster to ‘background’ lower mantle material. We obtain compatible results by repeating the analysis on recent global $\textit{P}$-wave speed ($\textit{V}_P$) models, although we find less agreement across $\textit{V}_P$ models. We systematically show that the clustering results, even in detail, agree remarkably well with a wide range of local waveform studies. This suggests that the two LLSVPs consist of multiple internal anomalies with a wide variety of morphologies, including shallowly to steeply sloping, and even overhanging, boundaries. Additionally, there are indications of previously unrecognized meso-scale features, which, like the Perm anomaly, are separated from the two main LLSVPs beneath the Pacific and Africa. The observed wide variety of structure size and morphology offers a challenge to recreate in geodynamic models; potentially, the variety can result from various degrees of mixing of several compositionally distinct components. Finally, we obtain new, much larger estimates of the volume/mass occupied by LLSVPs— 8.0 per cent ±0.9 ($\mu$ ± 1$\sigma$) of whole mantle volume and 9.1 per cent ±1.0 ($\mu$ ± 1$\sigma$) of whole mantle mass—and discuss implications for associating the LLSVPs with the hidden reservoir enriched in heat producing elements.

Previous studies have documented the presence of ultra-low-velocity-zones (ULVZs) at the base of the mantle, through observations of body wave complexities. Geometrically their heights are in the range of ∼ 5 – 30 km , while little is known about their lateral extent beyond about 102 km, due to limitations in sampling. Here we show remarkable features in the waveforms of S/Sdiff phases of western Pacific events observed at stations in North America that indicate the presence of a very large ultra-low-velocity-zone (ULVZ) at the base of the mantle, centered ∼ 11 ° to the southwest of Hawaii, within and near the northern border of the Pacific LLSVP. Waveform complexities include strongly delayed ( > 30 s ) postcursors. Measurements of travel times, beamforming analysis of out-of-plane energy, and full waveform comparisons with 3D numerical simulations, constrain the location, lateral extent, height and velocity reduction of the ULVZ with some level of trade-off. The simplified 3D model consists of a cylindrical ULVZ with a large aspect ratio of ∼ 20 km in height and ∼ 910 km in diameter at the CMB. The shear wave velocity reduction is ∼ 20 % . This is to our knowledge the largest ULVZ mapped to date and the first time the lateral extent of a ULVZ has been constrained with some precision. Its location suggests that it may be the root of a long-lived, stable plume responsible for the Hawaiian volcanic chain, the hotspot track with the largest buoyancy flux.

Over the past two decades arguments have been made for and against the occurrence of thermal convection in the inner core. Here we use numerical simulations of thermochemical convection to develop parameterized models for the thermal and chemical evolution of the inner core. A broad search of parameter values shows that thermal convection is feasible, particularly in the early stages of the inner core. For a thermal conductivity of 36 Wm - 1 K - 1 , the minimum core–mantle boundary heat flux required for convection is ∼4.1 TW, corresponding to a maximum inner core age of 1.93 Gy. A heat flux greater than ∼6.3 TW (age Wm - 1 K - 1 imply that the inner core is convectively stable for heat flows below 4.3 TW or inner core ages older than 1.8 Gy. Convective velocities of several cm/yr are obtained for a nominal viscosity of 1018 Pa s, yielding strain rates of 10 - 15 s - 1 . Calculations over a range of Rayleigh numbers, Ra, confirm that the convective velocities are proportional to Ra 1 / 2 . Termination of convection at an early stage of evolution may provide an explanation for a distinct anisotropy in the innermost region of the inner core or a shallow isotropic layer.

In the deep earth, deformation occurs at many scales: large-scale convection produces subduction of slabs and upwelling of plumes in the mantle. At the high temperature/high pressure conditions, strain is accommodated through crystal plasticity, either by diffusion or the movement of dislocations. Slip causes crystal rotations and thus produces a characteristic pattern of crystal preferred orientation and corresponding anisotropy of physical properties at the macroscopic scale. In this study we use polycrystal plasticity, with experimentally derived deformation mechanisms for perovskite, post-perovskite and magnesiowuestite, to predict texture development along streamlines in a 2D geodynamic convection model of the lowermost mantle. Strong preferred orientation develops during subduction and upwelling, while during spreading along the core–mantle boundary the orientation pattern is relatively stable. From preferred crystal orientation and single crystal elastic properties, bulk elastic properties can be calculated and compared with seismic observations. Post-perovskite with predominant (001) slip and magnesiowuestite with {110} and {111} slip produce anisotropy patterns which are consistent with observed anisotropy, i.e. fast S-waves polarized parallel to the core–mantle boundary and anti-correlation between P and S-wave anisotropies. In contrast, perovskite with dominant (001) slip and two post-perovskite models with dominant slip on (010) and (100) produce anisotropy patterns which are inconsistent with seismic observations.

This study models texture evolution in a subducting slab impinging on the core-mantle boundary. Using a 3-dimensional geodynamic model with tracers recording the deformation history, a visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) model for polycrystal deformation, and relying on experimentally determined slip systems, aggregate grains with volume fractions of 60% orthorhombic silicate perovskite (MgSiO3), 20% cubic calcium perovskite (CaSiO3), and 20% cubic ferropericlase ((Mg,Fe)O) were deformed plastically and developed crystal preferred orientation. Forward and reverse perovskite (Pv)-postperovskite (PPv) phase transitions were included by allowing for likely orientation variant selections. Grain orientations, P (compression) and S (shear) wave velocity pole figures were calculated for each phase as well as the aggregate. The results show that dominant (001) slip on PPv can produce strong texture and shear wave anisotropy of 0.01-3.07% with VSH >VSV which agrees with seismological observations in selected areas of the D" layer.

Fe and Al are two of the most important rock-forming elements other than Mg, Si, and O. Their presence in the lower mantle's most abundant minerals, MgSiO_3 bridgmanite, MgSiO_3 post-perovskite and MgO periclase, alters their elastic properties. However, knowledge on the thermoelasticity of Fe- and Al-bearing MgSiO_3 bridgmanite, and post-perovskite is scarce. In this study, we perform ab initio molecular dynamics to calculate the elastic and seismic properties of pure, Fe^{3+}- and Fe^{2+}-, and Al^{3+}-bearing MgSiO_3 perovskite and post-perovskite, over a wide range of pressures, temperatures, and Fe/Al compositions. Our results show that a mineral assemblage resembling pyrolite fits a 1D seismological model well, down to, at least, a few hundred kilometers above the core-mantle boundary, i.e. the top of the D'' region. In D'', a similar composition is still an excellent fit to the average velocities and fairly approximate to the density. We also implement polycrystal plasticity with a geodynamic model to predict resulting seismic anisotropy, and find post-perovskite with predominant (001) slip across all compositions agrees best with seismic observations in the D''., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures; submitted to journal 8 June 2015

Earth’s lower mantle is dominated by a pair of antipodal large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs) that reach 4 1000 km up from the core–mantle boundary (CMB). These are separated by a ring of faster-than-average velocities thought to be related to subduction of oceanic lithosphere. How robustly does global tomography constrain velocity structure in the lower mantle, and are there other robust large scale features that have not been identified? We use cluster analysis to identify structures and seismic characteristics common to a set of recent global tomographic models which have been derived using different data sets, parameterizations, and theory behind approximations used in inversion. We detect a pronounced asymmetry in the velocity gradient with depth between seismically fast and slow regions in the lowermost 500 km of the mantle, suggesting the presence of compositional heterogeneity. We find that, in all models, there is a clear separation of lower mantle structure into one fast and two slow regions, and that the boundary of the regions is remarkably similar across models even on length scales as small as o1000 km. This inter-model similarity indicates that long wavelength features are not a consequence of lack of fine-scale resolution, but that they truly dominate the structure in the lowermost mantle. There is a single exception to this separation: an isolated slow anomaly � 900 km across (at the CMB) and extending � 500 km upward from the core–mantle boundary, which we call the ‘‘Perm Anomaly’’. Though it is far smaller than an LLSVP, waveform analysis confirms that this anomaly is robustly constrained and bounded by rapid lateral velocity gradients like those found around LLSVPs, suggesting that the nature and process of formation of both types of structures may be related.

Geochemical observations of ocean island and mid‐ocean ridge basalts suggest that abundances of heat‐producing elements (HPEs: U, Th, and K) vary within the mantle. Combined with bulk silicate Earth models and constraints on the Earth's heat budget, these observations suggest the presence of a more enriched (potentially deep and undepleted) reservoir in the mantle. Such a reservoir may be related to seismically observed deep mantle structures known as large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs). LLSVPs might represent thermochemical piles of an intrinsically denser composition, and many studies have shown such piles to remain stable over hundreds of Myr or longer. However, few studies have examined if thermochemical piles can remain stable if they are enriched in HPEs, a necessary condition for them to constitute an enriched HPE reservoir. We conduct a suite of mantle convection simulations to examine the effect of HPE enrichment up to 25× the ambient mantle on pile stability. Model results are evaluated against present‐day pile morphology and tested for resulting seismic signatures using self‐consistent potential pile compositions. We find that stable piles can form from an initial basal layer of dense material even if the layer is enriched in HPEs, depending on the density of the layer and degree of HPE enrichment, with denser basal layers requiring increased HPE enrichment to form pile‐like morphology instead of a stable layer. Thermochemical piles or LLSVPs may therefore constitute an enriched reservoir in the deep mantle.

We present evidence for the presence of complex anisotropy in the lowermost mantle from 3-D waveform modelling of observed core-diffracted shear waves that sample the southern edge of the African Large Low Shear Velocity Province (LLSVP). The anomalously strong amplitude of the SV component for the shear core-diffracted phase at large distances indicates the presence of anisotropy. We measure shear wave splitting parameters to determine which part of the elastic tensor is constrained by this particular data set. The modelling is performed using the spectral element method. The anisotropy is strong outside the LLSVP, weakens or rotates close to its boundary, and appears to be absent inside the LLSVP. The presence of the LLSVP margin may cause flow in the mantle to change direction. The occurrence of strong anisotropy in the region of fast seismic velocities is compatible with lattice-preferred orientation in post-perovskite due to accommodation of flow through dislocation creep.

These Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs) play a crucial role in the dynamics of the lower mantle and act as the source region for deep‐seated mantle plumes. However, their origin, and the characteristics of the surrounding deep mantle, remain enigmatic. Mantle plumes located above the margins of the LLSVPs display evidence for the presence of this deep‐seated, thermally and/or chemically heterogeneous mantle material ascending into the melting region. As a result, analysis of the spatial geochemical heterogeneity in ocean island basalts provides constraints on the structure of the Earth's lower mantle and the origin of the LLSVPs. In this study, we focus on the Galápagos Archipelago in the eastern Pacific, where bilateral asymmetry in the radiogenic isotopic composition of erupted basalts has been linked to the presence of LLSVP material in the underlying plume. We show, using spatial variations in the major element contents of high‐MgO basalts, that the isotopically enriched south‐western region of the Galápagos mantle—assigned to melting of LLSVP material—displays no evidence for lithological heterogeneity in the mantle source. As such, it is unlikely that the Pacific LLSVP represents a pile of subducted oceanic crust. Clear evidence for a lithologically heterogeneous mantle source is, however, found in the north‐central Galápagos, indicating that a recycled crustal component is present near the eastern margin of the Pacific LLSVP, consistent with seismic observations.

We present BurnMan, an open-source mineral physics toolbox to determine elastic properties for specified compositions in the lower mantle by solving an Equation of State (EoS). The toolbox, written in Python, can be used to evaluate seismic velocities of new mineral physics data or geodynamic models, and as the forward model in inversions for mantle composition. The user can define the composition from a list of minerals provided for the lower mantle or easily include their own. BurnMan provides choices in methodology, both for the EoS and for the multiphase averaging scheme. The results can be visually or quantitatively compared to observed seismic models. Example user scripts show how to go through these steps. This paper includes several examples realized with BurnMan: First, we benchmark the computations to check for correctness. Second, we exemplify two pitfalls in EoS modeling: using a different EoS than the one used to derive the mineral physical parameters or using an incorrect averaging scheme. Both pitfalls have led to incorrect conclusions on lower mantle composition and temperature in the literature. We further illustrate that fitting elastic velocities separately or jointly leads to different Mg/Si ratios for the lower mantle. However, we find that, within mineral physical uncertainties, a pyrolitic composition can match PREM very well. Finally, we find that uncertainties on specific input parameters result in a considerable amount of variation in both magnitude and gradient of the seismic velocities.

The lowermost few hundreds of kilometres of the Earth's mantle are elastically anisotropic; seismic velocities vary with direction of propagation and polarization. Observations of strong seismic anisotropy correlate with regions where subducted slab material is expected. In this study, we evaluate the hypothesis that crystal preferred orientation (CPO) in a slab, as it impinges on the core-mantle boundary, is the cause of the observed anisotropy. Next, we determine if fast polarization directions seen by shear waves can be mapped to directions of geodynamic flow. This approach is similar to our previous study performed for a 2-D geodynamic model. In this study, we employ a 3-D geodynamic model with temperaturedependent viscosity and kinematic velocity boundary conditions defined at the surface of the Earth to create a broad downwelling slab. Tracers track the deformation that we assume to be accommodated by dislocation creep. We evaluate the models for the presence of perovskite or post-perovskite and for different main slip systems along which dislocation creep may occur in post-perovskite [(100),(010) and (001)]-resulting in four different mineralogical models of CPO. Combining the crystal pole orientations with single crystal elastic constants results in seismically distinguishable models of seismic anisotropy. The models are evaluated against published seismic observations by analysing different anisotropic components: the radial anisotropy, the splitting for (sub-)vertical phases (i.e. azimuthal anisotropy), and the splitting for subhorizontal phases. The patterns in radial anisotropy confirm our earlier results in 2-D. Observations of radial anisotropy and splitting in subhorizontal phases are mostly consistent with our models of post-perovskite with (010)-slip and (001)-slip. Our model of (001)-slip predicts stronger splitting than for (010)-slip for horizontally propagating phases in all directions. The strongest seismic anisotropy in this model occurs where the slab impinges on the core-mantle boundary. The azimuthal anisotropy pattern for (001)-slip shows fast axis directions at the edges of the slab (sub-)parallel to flow directions, suggesting horizontal flows may be mapped out in the lowermost mantle using seismic observations. © The Authors 2014.
