北海道東部の遺跡より出土した木質遺物の樹種同定調査例は限られ、とくにアイヌ文化期の知見は乏しい。そこで、北見市常呂川河口遺跡から出土したアイヌ文化期の木質遺物372点について樹種同定を行い、その木材利用の特徴について調べた。計23の植物種・群が同定された。同定を行った木質遺物の多く（372点中276点）は、その形態的特徴に基づいて住居や他の建造物で使用される「土木・建築部材」に分類された。「土木・建築部材」について近隣の別年代の遺跡や同年代の道内別地域の遺跡と比較すると、ヤナギ属が際立って多かった（約40％）。また、近隣の別年代の遺跡と比べると、針葉樹類が少ない（約4％）ことも特徴であった。当時の北海道東部には天然分布しないと考えられるブナ属、カラマツ属が検出された。これらは交易など人間活動により持ち込まれたものと推察された。杭状の丸材について径級別に樹種構成を調べたところ、直径5cm未満の丸材においてはヤナギ属が（43％）、直径5cm以上の丸材においてはコナラ属が（40％）最も多く占めた。杭状試料の先端部の加工法には樹種および径級による特徴が認められた。, In order to gain information concerning wood utilization in prehistoric periods in eastern Hokkaido, Japan, we attempted to identify a total of 372 wooden remains from the Ainu Culture Period (A.D. 1200-1700) excavated at the Tokorogawa Estuary Site. The wooden remains included 23 taxa/species, and their proportion differed markedly. Most (276 specimens) of the 372 specimens were classified into timbers used in pit dwellings or other constructions on the basis of their shape and size. Salix was the most commonly used timbers (nearly 40 %). Such a common use of Salix is characteristic of the wooden remains examined, when compared with wooden remains in other periods at and around this site, and with those in the same culture periods in the other regions of Hokkaido. It was also notable that conifers were uncommonly used (4 %), when compared with wooden remains in other periods at and around this site. Two taxa (Fagus and Larix) that did not exist in this region were included. It seems likely that these remains had been introduced to this site by human activity in the era. Comparison of stake-like wooden remains (column shaped stem pieces with pointed ends) between narrower class (less than 5 cm in diameter) and wider class (5 cm and more in diameter), showed that Salix was the most common (43 %) in the narrower class while Quercus was most common (40 %) in the wider class. The shapes of pointed ends of the stake-like pieces were characteristic in each taxon/species and depended on their diameter.

This study aimed to clarify the factors that influence tree susceptibility to infection by the white-rot fungus Perenniporia fraxinea, by inoculating it into stems of four tree species at butt and breast height, and comparing the alterations in the xylem three to five months after inoculation. The four tree species include Robinia pseudoacacia, Cerasus sargentii, Ulmus davidiana var. japonica and Picea glehnii; the former two species are easily infected by this fungus, whereas the latter two species are not. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis detected the inoculated fungus only in the butt xylem of R. pseudoacacia and C. sargentii and the cell walls in the butt xylem tissues of these species were eroded by hyphae. Other xylem alterations (e.g., water accumulation and cell occlusion) differed among tree species, whereas no apparent difference was observed between butt and breast height. For example, water accumulation occurred in the discolored wood tissues around the inoculated holes in both R. pseudoacacia and U davidiana var. japonica, while dehydration occurred in the light-colored wood tissues around the inoculated hole in P. glehnii. In the vicinity of the inoculation holes, resin deposits formed in P. glehnii, whereas cell occlusions by tyloses/gums occurred in the other three species. These results suggest that susceptibility to P. fraxinea infection differs not only among tree species but also between heights above ground. It is likely that no particular response to fungal inoculation in the xylem tissues of these four tree species is closely associated with their susceptibility to the infection by P. fraxinea., ベッコウタケ（以下同菌）に感染する頻度が高いと報告されているハリエンジュ，エゾヤマザクラ，同じく低いとされるハルニレ，アカエゾマツの各立木樹幹の地際部と胸高部に同菌を接種し，菌糸の蔓延状況や材組織で生じる反応を比較した。接種孔付近の材組織には，ハリエンジュ，ハルニレでは濃い変色と水分の集積，アカエゾマツでは淡色化と脱水など，樹種毎に特徴的な変化が生じたが，地上高による違いは見られなかった。接種した菌はハリエンジュ，エゾヤマザクラの地際部からのみ検出された。菌糸による細胞壁の分解も両種の地際接種部の変色材では認められた。接種孔近傍の材組織において，アカエゾマツでは樹脂の堆積，他の広葉樹3種では細胞閉塞物の堆積が観察された。以上から，同菌に対する抵抗性は樹種間，地上高間で異なると言える。また，同菌に対する抵抗性と水分集積などの材組織で生じる反応との間に明確な関連性はないと考えられる。

To elucidate the effect of soil conditions on the in planta distribution of inorganic elements, an aluminium (Al)-tolerant plant, Hydrangea macrophylla, was cultivated with the addition of Al ion to soils. Freeze-dried stems from the plants were analysed by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (dry-TOF-SIMS). Freeze-fixed stems of the plants were analysed by cryo-TOF-SIMS. The inorganic metal content was quantified by inductively coupled plasma atomic absorption spectrometry (ICP-AES). The dry- and cryo-TOF-SIMS mapping analyses showed that in the native sample, inorganic elements are mainly localised in the cortex and pith. Al-treatment [i.e. Al2(SO4)3 administration to the soil] altered the distribution and content of inorganic metals. The actual amount of inorganic elements quantified by ICP-AES showed that Al-treatment on the soil increased the amounts of Na, Mg, Al and Ca and decreased that of K in the stem. The secondary ion counts of inorganic elements in freeze-dried and -fixed samples, determined by dry-/cryo-TOF-SIMS measurements, showed similar variations as that observed with ICP-AES measurements. These results are interpreted as that Al-treatment altered the distribution and amount of inorganic elements in the stems of Al-tolerant H. macrophylla plants.

SSHとはスーパー・サイエンス・ハイスクールを意味し、文部科学省が将来の国際的な科学技術関係人材を育成するために、先進的な理数教育を実施する高等学校等をSSHとして指定し、学習指導要領によらないカリキュラムの開発・実践や課題研究の推進，観察・実験等を通じた体験的・問題解決的な学習等を支援している事業である。平成14年度より始まったが、平成25年度から岩見沢農業高校がこの指定を受けた＊。なお、同校OBが北方生物圏フィールド科学センター（以下、センター）森林圏ステーションや森林科学科木材工学系などに多く勤務してきた。（＊：SSH指定校は全国で201校あり、北海道内では8校が指定を受けている。この中で農業系専門高校の指定は全国で5校しかないが、道内では岩見沢農高が初めての指定となる。SSHの指定期間は基本的には5カ年であるが，その後指定延長の申請ができ，受理された場合は継続して指定を受けることができる。）本稿では、農学部森林科学科と協力し、選抜された岩見沢農高SSH生に対して、初年度、二年目と引き続いて対応した内容を中心に、気づいたことを紹介する。なお、岩見沢農高のとり組みの概要は、岩見沢農高森林科学科・主任、佐野博志教諭の論壇（佐野 2014）から引用し、身近なフィールドである札幌実験苗畑の文科省への貢献の在り方を述べる。

樹木は多量の炭素を蓄積する巨大な組織（幹：シンク）をもち、地球上の炭素循環を考える上で重要な植物グループである。光合成作用の結果、固定した炭素から幹を造り光合成器官である葉をより光環境の良い場所へ配置することで自らの環境を変える。また、樹木は近年急上昇している大気CO2濃度など、さまざまな環境変化に順応して生き抜いている。1997年12月に採択された京都議定書への対応もあって、進行する高CO2環境に対する森林樹木の応答を至急解明する必要性が唱えられた。このような考えは文部科学省の「人・自然・共生プロジェクト」に一部採択され、2003年から札幌研究林において苫小牧、天塩研究林の支援を得て、落葉樹を対象にした開放系大気CO2増加（FACE : Free Air CO2 Enrichment）実験を開始した。さらに「分子生物学から個体生理、そして地球モデルへとスケールを変えてCO2への応答を探る」という新学術領域研究に採択されたことによって、北大FACEはさらに5年間継続でき、成果に普遍性を与えることが出来つつある。野外の操作実験からは5～10年程度継続した研究の結果でなければ、変動の大きい野外での傾向を論じることは出来ない。従来の研究は、制御環境で得られたデータを基礎に予測値を与えてきた。しかし、本研究は野外環境で実施することに意義がある （小池 2010）。なぜ、精密な制御が難しく膨大な予算を必要とする野外での操作実験を行う必要があるのかを、まず述べたい。
