1. Radiational tides and forecasting storm surges

Abstract

In the UK, Coastal Flood Forecasting procedures rely on forecasts of still water level generated by combining predicted tide and storm surge components. The tide component of this system is often termed the ‘astronomic tide’. However, the predicted tide is derived from a harmonic analysis of the full water level time-series (tide plus surge) observed at tide gauges – typically from the last 19 years. Therefore, the tidal predictions will include radiational tides particularly those that occur with tidal frequencies such as S2 and Sa.We have previously shown that the current forecasting system double-counts several cm of tides from these sources, since the radiational tides are also generated by the surge model. Now we investigate further, to see whether removing a modelled surge prior to tidal analysis and prediction can improve total water level forecasting., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

2. Intent to Persist at Religiously Affiliated Universities

Abstract

The purpose of the secondary data analysis was to examine the attributes of students who intend to persist at the same religiously affiliated institution. The review of literature indicated that persistence has been studied extensively, but there has been only limited investigation of persistence focused on religiously affiliated institutions. The study examined the demographics, academics, social involvement, spiritual growth, and university environment factors of freshmen and the impact these attributes had on their intent to persist to their sophomore year. This study examined data obtained from religiously affiliated institutions that chose to participate in the 2007 CIRP Freshman Survey and the 2008 Your First College Year (YFCY) survey. These surveys are administered by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at the University of California-Los Angeles. The study analyzed the effects of background and experiences of students prior to college and also the first year experiences of students on retention and persistence. The survey responses were analyzed using logistic regression analysis as the statistical tool for the research. The findings of the study indicated that students, whose parents attended the same institution, who were strongly satisfied with the quality of instruction, who strengthened their religious convictions during the first year of college, and felt a sense of belonging with the college, were more likely to intend to persist to their sophomore year at the same religiously affiliated institution. Abstract

Uncertainty in the measurement of key battery internal states, such as temperature, impacts our understanding of battery performance, degradation and safety and underpins considerable complexity and cost when scaling-up battery components into complete systems. Our research presents a systematic methodology for the engineering of a commercially available cylindrical cell format to accept in-cell instrumentation. We have developed bespoke cell opening methods and unique fixtures that facilitate a reliable instrumentation process. Extensive experimental results are presented that highlight the performance of both the sensor and the lithium-ion battery are not adversely affected by instrumentation. Our modified test cells were evaluated the energy capacity and impedance for a range of different electrical loading conditions and compared to a set of reference or unmodified batteries. The longer-term implications of embedding instrumentation within a battery are also evaluated with cell performance evaluated after a period of calendar and cyclic ageing. Our study demonstrates the importance of internal temperature monitoring during cell operation by comparing internal and surface temperatures measurements. We found that the internal temperature is consistently and notably higher than surface temperature during cell characterisation and when the cell was electrically loaded with a dynamic real-world profile derived from an electric vehicle. No significant effect on the electrochemical performance of the instrumented cells was observed. Measurement data demonstrates that there is a negligible reduction in energy capacity and only a marginal increase in internal resistance.

31. Interventions for sexual dysfunction following stroke

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction following stroke is common but often is poorly managed. As awareness of sexual dysfunction following stroke increases as an important issue, a clearer evidence base for interventions for sexual dysfunction is needed to optimise management. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to reduce sexual dysfunction following stroke, and to assess adverse events associated with interventions for sexual dysfunction following stroke. SEARCH METHODS: We conducted the search on 27 November 2019. We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL; from June 2014), in the Cochrane Library; MEDLINE (from 1950); Embase (from 1980); the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL; from 1982); the Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED; from 1985); PsycINFO (from 1806); the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro; from 1999); and 10 additional bibliographic databases and ongoing trial registers. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that compared pharmacological treatments, mechanical devices, or complementary medicine interventions versus placebo. We also included other non-pharmacological interventions (such as education or therapy), which were compared against usual care or different forms of intervention (such as different intensities) for treating sexual dysfunction in stroke survivors. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors independently selected eligible studies, extracted data, and assessed study quality. We determined the risk of bias for each study and performed a 'best evidence' synthesis using the GRADE approach. MAIN RESULTS: We identified three RCTs with a total of 212 participants. We noted significant heterogeneity in interventions (one pharmacological, one physiotherapy-based, and one psycho-educational), and all RCTs were small and of 'low' or 'very low' quality.
