Research concerning reaction of phosphites with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate and C (sub)60 to produce phosphite ylides has been conducted. Hydrolysis of these ylides used to introduce phosphonate ester, phosphine oxide and phosphonic acid to a fullerene moiety is described.

Research has been conducted on the C (sub)60 and acetylenes reaction with phosphines. Introduction of phosphorus substituents onto C (sub)60 is discussed.

A new and convenient one-step synthetic approach to cyclohexadiene derivatives of C60 by means of a nickel-mediated cycloaddition of bisalkynes to C60 is presented. This method for constructing a fused cyclohexadiene ring on C60 based on a nickel-promoted (2+2+2) cycloaddition of 1,6-diynes is general for various bisalkynes. Results indicate that the cycloaddition of diynes to C60 takes place across a 6,6-ring junction on the fullerene. They also demonstrate that nickel phosphine complexes can effectively promote cycloaddition of 1,6-diynes to C60.

A study was conducted to characterize the synthesis of angular triquinanes using an alpha-carbonyl radical cyclization technique. alpha-iodo ester was obtained through the mixture iodination while gas chromatography was carried out to analyze the optical purity of the triquinanes. X-ray analysis was also performed to support the stereochemistry of the chiral product. Results indicated that the angular triquinane supported high enantiomeric purity.
