Abstract

The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Abstract

Diversification of sperm design is a common feature in animals. Considerable intra-individual variation has been detected even in species whose males produce a monomorphic sperm. The evolutionary forces that shape the variation in the gross morphology of these gametic cells are still not completely understood. Previous studies suggest that the intra-individual variation in sperm size reduces as a result of post-copulatory sexual selection. To our knowledge, for the first time, we provide evidence here that pre-copulatory sexual selection can also play a role. By studying the Neotropical paper wasp, Polistes simillimus, a monandrous species, we found reduced variation in sperm length in males bearing sexual ornamentation preferred by females. Besides, the female spermatheca contains a less variable sperm compared to that in the male seminal vesicles. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-06-01 Parasitoid wasps within the Vespoidea superfamily have been chronically under surveyed, thanks to the bigger attention given to the social species within that group or to the other parasitoids within the megadiverse Parasitica infraorder. To address that, we test a new sampling technique for the capture of parasitoid Vespoidea and other Hymenoptera in comparison to other two well stablished designs. Between the consecutive dry and wet seasons of 2014-2015 we placed sets of Malaise (MT), yellow pan (YPT) and ethanolic (ET) traps in a fragment of semideciduous Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. We hypothesised that MT is the most efficient method for sampling Hymenoptera families and lower taxa of Vespoidea, while YPT and ET would be more efficient in attracting specific taxa, given their characteristic luring mechanisms. We calculated taxa accumulation curves to evaluate expected richness. Average Taxonomic Distinctiveness (Δ+) was used as the continuous dependent variable in two-way ANOVAs. Faunal similarity was inspected through nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). All tests were performed taking season and trap design as explanatory variables. MT was the most efficient in sampling total richness and Δ+ of Hymenoptera and Vespoidea lower taxa. It captured all 39 families recorded in the present study and 60 out of the 73 Vespoidea lower taxa. YPT tended to lure Diapriidae, Dryinidae, Ponerinae and Myrmicinae ants and a few taxa of Pompilidae and Mutillidae, proving its efficiency in sampling wingless and shortflying hymenopterans as well as the predators and parasites of other non-grass feeding insects. ET, although successful in estimating Hymenoptera Δ+, did not have a sufficient capture rate to give a precise estimate of total richness. It attracted, however, the social wasps Polybia jurinei Saussure and Synoeca surinama (L.), species traditionally captured by active search. Synthesis and Applications: MT is confirmed as the most efficient capture method for Hymenoptera sampling and is recommended when a survey of the whole community is intended. ET was not successful in capturing any parasitoid Vespoidea as hypothesised but, as well as the YPT, it could be used as an alternative to active searches when the taxa listed above are the focus of the survey. These results provide a better understanding of passive capture methods for Hymenoptera sampling and can be considered in future surveys aiming to investigate their diversity, distribution and improve their conservation. Abstract

Ageniella (Priophanes) erythroptera (Banks, 1946) Priophanes erythroptera Banks, 1946: 443 ��� 444. We observed A. erythroptera transporting a young female of an undetermined species of wolf spider (Trochosa sp.) (Figs 9 ��� 10, Video 1). Abstract

Poecilopompilus On two occasions, a female Poecilopompilus sp. was observed transporting an adult female of an undetermined species of crab spider (Misumenops sp.) (Video 3). The wasp dragged the paralyzed crab spider with its dorsal side upwards. The wasp carried her host by grasping a foreleg with the mandibles and deposited the spider near the nest entrance (approx. 1m). After depositing the host (see from 05sec in Video 4), the wasp probably started to search for the nest entrance. This behavior continued for 2min05sec (Video 4). When the wasp located the nest, it entered and left the nest, possibly inspecting it. In sequence, the wasp returned to the site where the paralyzed host was left, grasped it again (i.e., in the same manner as described above) and carried it directly into the nest. The nest was simple, a 16 cm tunnel angled downwards ~45�� in relation to the surface, with 2 cm diameter. The nest was located on the edge of low vegetation (i.e., grass) (Figs 13���14) surrounding the trail. There was no construction of a temporary closure to protect the nest during the hunting period. However, throughout the permanent closure, the wasp filled the nest with soil from the previous excavation, using the forelegs, and compacted the soil by pressing the pygidial plate against the burrow walls (Video 5). In the final step, the wasp started biting the edge of the burrow with the mandibles to remove loose soil. The wasp also manipulated the soil with its forelegs and compacted it with the pygidium. We did not find egg laying on the spider. Abstract

Entypus renata sp. nov., Santos and Lopez, 2021 (Figs 3���8) Material examined. Type material: Holotype, f#, Brazil, Jundia�� ���SP, Biological Reserve of Serra do Japi, 28.III.2019, Kobal, R. et al., col. (LESTES collection��� UFTM, voucher n�� Hym���006/0001). Diagnosis: FEMALE. This species can be distinguished from all other species of Entypus by the following combination of morphological characteristics: body black without metallic reflections; antenna dark brown with F1 (distal third), F2, F3 and F4 orange; wings amber with tip slightly lighter; clypeus apical margin very slightly emarginate; mesosternum with small and angulated process; propodeum and metapleuron striated; hind tibia with dorsal face serrate and inner brush interrupted prior to the distal apex; 3rd submarginal cell larger than 2nd one; S2 with tubercles very little developed and looking integumentary bumps. This new species is somewhat similar to Entypus nitidus (Banks), but it can be differentiated by the clypeus, antennae coloration, wing venation and coloration. E. nitidus has the apical margin of the clypeus stronger emarginated, antennal flagellum completely orange, 3rd submarginal cell with similar size to 2nd one, and wing tip infuscate (photos of the holotype of E. nitidus are available in the MCZ specimen database and can be accessed searching for Priocnemioides nitidus Banks in: https://mczbase.mcz.harvard.edu/SpecimenSearch.cfm). Description. FEMALE, holotype. Body length 14.0 mm. Color. Body black; distal third of F1 orange, F2���F4 fully orange; wings amber with tip slightly lighter (Fig. 3). Body covered by dark pubescence; head and mesosoma densely cover with long dark setae. Head. HW: HH = 1.19; MID: HW = 0.57. Eyes convergent above, with UID: LID = 0.84. Ocellar triangle small; POD: OOD = 0.43. Gena well developed. Malar space very short, latero-inferior margin of the head margin close to the eye margin, but not touching it. Clypeus large, regularly convex; width 2.39x its height; apical margin carinate, very slightly emarginate centrally (Fig. 4). Mandible stout, with two teeth, one on the inner margin and the other on the apical margin. Labrum not exposed, apical margin slightly emarginated and with long setae. Maxillary palpi IV���VI with subequal length. Antenna elongated, with cylindrical flagellomeres and ratio of the five first antennomers length (scape: pedicel: F1: F2: F3) 2: 0.6: 3.5: 2.8: 2.6; F1 length 5.5x its most distal width; F10 length 6.2x its most proximal width, pointed apically. Mesosoma. Mesosoma length: 4.88 mm; forewing: 6.89 mm. Pronotum short, without a distinct dorsal surface and with posterior margin angled. Mesoscutum convex, notaulus distinctly impressed. Mesoscutellum and metanotum strongly convex. Mesopleuron strongly convex. Mesosternal process small and angulated (Fig. 5). Metaposnotum longitudinally striated, distinctly shorter than metanotum (0.24x the metanotum length), emarginated postero-medially. Propodeum strongly convex and striated (Figs 3, 6). Metapleuron striated (Fig. 6). Third submarginal cell larger (i.e., longer and wider) than second; R at the sector between 2r-m and 3r-m longer than it at between 1r-m and 2r-m (Fig. 3). Procoxa with distal inner margin strongly emarginated (Fig. 7); hind tibia with two lines of tegumental projection on the proximal fourth and one line on the rest of the tibia length; inner hind tibial brush interrupted prior to the distal apex; last tarsomere of all legs with two lines of spiniform setae and with dentated claws. Metasoma. T1 with distinct lateral groove; T6 covered with several stout setae. S2 with tubercles slightly elevated, such as swellings (Fig. 8); S3 ��� S5 with long backward setae irregularly distributed on the posterior half; S6 with similar setae of anterior sternum (i.e., S5) on the posterior two thirds. Distribution. Known only from the type locality in Biological Reserve of Serra do Japi, Jundia�����SP. Etymology. Abstract

Parasitoid wasps within the Vespoidea superfamily have been chronically under surveyed, thanks to the bigger attention given to the social species within that group or to the other parasitoids within the megadiverse Parasitica infraorder. To address that, we test a new sampling technique for the capture of parasitoid Vespoidea and other Hymenoptera in comparison to other two well stablished designs. Between the consecutive dry and wet seasons of 2014-2015 we placed sets of Malaise (MT), yellow pan (YPT) and ethanolic (ET) traps in a fragment of semideciduous Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. We hypothesised that MT is the most efficient method for sampling Hymenoptera families and lower taxa of Vespoidea, while YPT and ET would be more efficient in attracting specific taxa, given their characteristic luring mechanisms. We calculated taxa accumulation curves to evaluate expected richness. Average Taxonomic Distinctiveness (Δ+ ) was used as the continuous dependent variable in two-way ANOVAs. Faunal similarity was inspected through nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). All tests were performed taking season and trap design as explanatory variables. MT was the most efficient in sampling total richness and Δ+ of Hymenoptera and Vespoidea lower taxa. It captured all 39 families recorded in the present study and 60 out of the 73 Vespoidea lower taxa. YPT tended to lure Diapriidae, Dryinidae, Ponerinae and Myrmicinae ants and a few taxa of Pompilidae and Mutillidae, proving its efficiency in sampling wingless and shortflying hymenopterans as well as the predators and parasites of other non-grass feeding insects. ET, although successful in estimating Hymenoptera Δ +, did not have a sufficient capture rate to give a precise estimate of total richness. It attracted, however, the social wasps Polybia jurinei Saussure and Synoeca surinama (L.), species traditionally captured by active search. Synthesis and Applications: MT is confirmed as the most efficient capture method for Hymenoptera sampling and is recommended when a survey of the whole community is intended. ET was not successful in capturing any parasitoid Vespoidea as hypothesised but, as well as the YPT, it could be used as an alternative to active searches when the taxa listed above are the focus of the survey. These results provide a better understanding of passive capture methods for Hymenoptera sampling and can be considered in future surveys aiming to investigate their diversity, distribution and improve their conservation. Abstract

Abstract: Tropical montane organisms are vulnerable to climate change because of elevational specialisation, but little is known of the variability in elevational specialisation across tropical insects. We assessed elevational specialisation across several insect taxa comprising four trophic groups 80–2263 m up an elevational transect in Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, using community‐based and species‐based approaches. We sampled 697 species, of which 32% were found only in the top and 45% only in the bottom half of the transect. Considering only the 182 species with at least five individuals recorded, the percentage of species found exclusively in the top or bottom half drops to 16% and 24%. Across four vegetation belts (lower montane forest, montane forest, upper montane forest and Campos de Altitude) the Eumolpinae (herbivores) were more specialised than Scarabaeinae (saprotrophs), or Lampyridae (predators). This result was robust to the treatment of rare species, and the difference was most marked at higher elevations. Lampyridae lacked upper montane forest specialists. Using all species sampled, specialisation to the upper or lower half of the transect was greatest among Chrysomelidae, Curculionidae (both herbivores) and Lampyridae, and lowest among Tiphiidae (parasitoids) and Coccinellidae (predators). Considering only better sampled species, however, Lampyridae were the most specialised and Braconidae the least specialised. Trophic groups also varied consistent with these findings. Our findings suggest high elevational specialisation and concomitant extinction risk in Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest insects. Abstract

1. Ageniella is a species-rich group of spider wasps restricted to the New World. Knowledge regarding the behaviour of this genus is based mainly on the Nearctic species, which have been reported to nest solitarily in the soil. This study reports for the first time the nesting behaviour, with host association of Ageniella ( Lissagenia) flavipennis Banks. 2. Behavioural aspects on the nesting of A. flavipennis were observed from a study of six nests found in an Atlantic Forest conservation area in São Paulo State, Brazil. Host specimens were collected from a nest, as well as while being carried by an A. flavipennis individual . 3. The present study reports the A. flavipennis females cohabiting or nesting solitarily in mud nests, indicating that this spider wasp shows some lower level of parasociality. In addition, the spider Enoploctenus cyclothorax ( Bertkau) was reported for the first time as host. As has been observed for other Ageniellini, females of A. flavipennis amputate the host's legs and transport the spider to the nest, flying or walking forward. 4. Communal behaviour has been reported for species of different genera of Pompilidae, such as Macromeris Lepeletier, Paragenia Bingham and Auplopus Spinola. Recent phylogenetic analyses suggest that the Lissagenia species are more closely related to the other Ageniellini genera than to the other Ageniella species. The present information on nesting and prey could contribute towards a more conclusive phylogenetic position of Lissagenia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We register for first time the occurrence of Epipompilus tucumanusEvans, 1967 in Brazil, and record the spider Ariadna bolivianaSimon, 1907 as its host. The observations were made in the National Park of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The prey carriage mechanism is described for first time for this genus, and we provide a video showing this behavior.

Social networks are an interesting tool for people to express their aspirations, but monitoring peoples' activities to understand their behavior is a difficult task. This paper presents an application of the semantic uplift technique on social networks to store violence and criminality data. Abstract

Ants, an ecologically successful and numerically dominant group of animals, play key ecological roles as soil engineers, predators, nutrient recyclers, and regulators of plant growth and reproduction in most terrestrial ecosystems. Further, ants are widely used as bioindicators of the ecological impact of land use. We gathered information of ant species in the Atlantic Forest of South America. The ATLANTIC ANTS data set, which is part of the ATLANTIC SERIES data papers, is a compilation of ant records from collections (18,713 records), unpublished data (29,651 records), and published sources (106,910 records; 1,059 references), including papers, theses, dissertations, and book chapters published from 1886 to 2020. In total, the data set contains 153,818 ant records from 7,636 study locations in the Atlantic Forest, representing 10 subfamilies, 99 genera, 1,114 ant species identified with updated taxonomic certainty, and 2,235 morphospecies codes. Our data set reflects the heterogeneity in ant records, which include ants sampled at the beginning of the taxonomic history of myrmecology (the 19th and 20th centuries) and more recent ant surveys designed to address specific questions in ecology and biology. The data set can be used by researchers to develop strategies to deal with different macroecological and region-wide questions, focusing on assemblages, species occurrences, and distribution patterns. Furthermore, the data can be used to assess the consequences of changes in land use in the Atlantic Forest on different ecological processes. 26. Multifactorial explanatory model of depression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a structural equation approach.

Abstract

Objectives: Depressive symptoms are common among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study was aimed at developing a multifactorial explanatory model that evaluated the influence of personality traits, disease activity, perceived disease impact, and comorbidities., Methods: This cross-sectional study used structural equation modelling estimation to analyse the associations between these dimensions, pursuing three hypotheses. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, disease impact by the Rheumatoid Arthritis Impact of Disease score, personality by the Ten Item Personality Inventory and the disease activity through the Disease Activity Score 28 joints. The influence of comorbidities was investigated by multigroup analysis., Results: The final model derived from data of 254 patients presented a good fit. Disease activity had an indirect relation with depressive symptoms mediated by disease impact (β=0.17, p<0.001), but the direct relationship between disease activity and depressive symptoms was not significant (β=0.09; p=0.07). "Positive" personality had a strong negative direct relation with depressive symptoms as well as an indirect relationship mediated by disease impact (total effect β=-0.61, p<0.001). The final proposed model explained 58% of the variance of depressive symptoms. Multigroup analysis showed an invariant model when comparing patients with and without comorbidities (dχ2=9.03; df=12; p=0.70)., Conclusions: Personality characteristics seem to have a major influence upon the impact of disease and the patient's adjustment to RA, including the vulnerability or resilience to depression. Individual personality traits deserve attention in tailored assessment and treatment of patients with RA, in order to optimise outcomes.
