Abstract

Cherenkov-type particle detectors or scintillators use as a fundamental element photomultiplier tubes, whose efficiency decreases when subjected to the Earth's magnetic field. This work develops a geomagnetic field compensation system based on coils for large scale cylindrical detectors. The effect of different parameters such as the size of the detector, the distance between coils or the magnetic field strength on the compensation using a basic coil system composed of circular and rectangular coils is studied. The addition of coils of very specific geometry and position to the basic configuration is proposed in order to address the compensation in the areas of the detector where it is more difficult to influence, in order to minimize the loss of efficiency. With such improvement, in the considered simulated system, more than 99.5% of the photomultiplier tubes in the detector experience an efficiency loss of less than 1% due to the effect of the magnetic fields., Comment: 22 pages, 31 figures

Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective: Describe the activities aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), implemented by a polytechnic higher education institution, in the northern region of Portugal. Methods: This is an experience report from a Higher Education Institution, which characterizes the contribution to the SDGs, within the scope of teaching, research, campus and leadership. Results: In total, 1247 activities were mapped, with a preponderance in the “people” dimension (685 activities), with SDG 3 being the most prominent. Scientific articles contribute significantly to the SDGs, with a notable discrepancy between automatic (Scopus) and manual classifications, indicating a tendency to underestimate the impact of nursing studies. Conclusion: The results demonstrate the significant contribution of this institution to the SDGs, with a special focus on health and education. This contribution reflects the mission of the institution, which involves training competent and socially conscious health professionals, but simultaneously the need for greater awareness and training of the teaching staff.

8. Relative abundances and enantiomerization energy of the chiral Cu$_{13}$ cluster at finite temperature

Abstract

This study reports the lowest energy structure of bare Cu$_{13}$ nanoclusters as a pair of enantiomers for temperatures ranging from 20 to 1200 K. Moreover, we compute the enantiomerization energy for the interconversion from $\mathcal{M}$ to $\mathcal{P}$ structures in the chiral putative global minimum for temperatures ranging from 20 to 1300 K. Additionally, employing statistical thermodynamics and nanothermodynamics, we compute the Boltzmann Probability for each particular isomer as a function of temperature. To achieve that, we explore the free energy surface of the Cu$_{13}$ cluster, employing a genetic algorithm coupled with density functional theory and statistical thermodynamics. Moreover, we discuss the energetic ordering of structures computed at the DFT level and compared to high level DLPNO-CCSD(T1) reference energies, and we present chemical bonding analysis using the AdNDP method in the chiral putative global minimum. Based on the computed relative abundances, our results show that the chiral putative global minimum strongly dominates for temperatures ranging from 20 to 1100 K., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Abstract There is no evidence evaluating the IL10 epigenetic upregulation among mestizo children in a high‐altitude Andean city in Latin America. Objective To identify polymorphisms and methylation profiles in the IL10 gene associated with asthma in children aged 5 to 11. Methods A case–control study was conducted with asthmatic and non‐asthmatic children aged 5 to 11 years in Cuenca‐Ecuador. Data on allergic diseases and risk factors were collected through a questionnaire for parents. Atopy was measured by skin prick test (SPT) to relevant aeroallergens. Three IL10 single nucleotide polymorphisms were evaluated in all participants, and methylation analysis was performed in 54 participants. Association between risk factors, allergic diseases and genetic factors were estimated using multivariate logistic regression. Results The results of polymorphisms showed no differences between cases and controls when comparing the SNPs rs3024495, rs3024496, rs1800896 allelic and genotypic frequencies. In the methylation analysis, no differences in the IL10 methylation profile were found between cases and controls; however, the multivariate analysis showed an association between the mother's smoking habits and the IL10 methylation profile. Conclusion Smoking habit could be essential as an environmental exposure factor in regulating gene expression in children with asthma.

Abstract

Introduction Elite controllers (ECs) represent a small subset of people living with HIV-1 (PLHIV), less than 1%, who can maintain undetectable viral load in the absence of antiretroviral therapy (ART) [...], BACKGROUND. Persistent controllers (PCs) maintain antiretroviral-free HIV-1 control indefinitely over time, while transient controllers (TCs) eventually lose virological control. It is essential to characterize the quality of the HIV reservoir in terms of these phenotypes in order to identify the factors that lead to HIV progression and to open new avenues toward an HIV cure. METHODS. The characterization of HIV-1 reservoir from peripheral blood mononuclear cells was performed using next- generation sequencing techniques, such as full-length individual and matched integration site proviral sequencing (FLIP-Seq; MIP-Seq). RESULTS. PCs and TCs, before losing virological control, presented significantly lower total, intact, and defective proviruses compared with those of participants on antiretroviral therapy (ART). No differences were found in total and defective proviruses between PCs and TCs. However, intact provirus levels were lower in PCs compared with TCs; indeed the intact/defective HIV-DNA ratio was significantly higher in TCs. Clonally expanded intact proviruses were found only in PCs and located in centromeric satellite DNA or zinc-finger genes, both associated with heterochromatin features. In contrast, sampled intact proviruses were located in permissive genic euchromatic positions in TCs. CONCLUSIONS. These results suggest the need for, and can give guidance to, the design of future research to identify a distinct proviral landscape that may be associated with the persistent control of HIV-1 without ART. Abstract

Background: Mosquito-borne diseases have a significant public health threat worldwide, with arboviruses accounting for a high proportion of infectious diseases and mortality annually. Brazil, in particular, has been suffering outbreaks of diseases transmitted by mosquito viruses, notably those of the Aedes genus, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Against this background, the São Paulo Zoo is an intriguing ecological niche to explore the virome of mosquitoes, potentially shedding light on the dynamics of arbovirus transmission within a confined setting. Methods: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive metagenomic analysis of mosquitoes collected from diverse habitats within the zoo, focusing on the Aedes , Anopheles , and Culex genera. From 1,039 contigs of viral origin, we identified 229 viral species infecting mosquitoes, with the orders Picornavirales , Nodamuvirales and Sobelivirales being the most prevalent and abundant. The difference in virome composition was primarily driven by mosquito host species rather than specific collection sites or trap height. Results: Despite environmental disparities, the virome remained remarkably uniform across different areas of the zoo, emphasizing the strong association between mosquito species and their viral communities. Furthermore, we identified a core virome shared among mosquito species, highlighting potential cross-species transmission events and underscoring the need for targeted surveillance and control measures. Conclusion: These results contribute to our understanding of the interplay between mosquitoes, the environment, and viruses, providing valuable insights for disease intervention strategies in mosquito-borne diseases. Abstract

Workers’ health and safety are a major concern in society, since work accidents have a major impact on productivity and economy. In Brazil, the accidents are officially reported through Work Accident Communication and they are available to the public. Thus, this study analyzed a balanced dataset containing 1,206 records of deaths caused by work accidents related to the transport sector. Its aim was analyzing how the deaths in the transport sector are related with the other work accident factors. To achieve this goal, twelve performance data mining techniques are compared, through five performance metrics, regarding the predictive capacity of the occurrence of deaths caused by work accidents. In this context, the XGBoost and Naïve Bayes algorithms showed the best predictive capacity. The explanatory analysis indicates that work accidents followed by death in road transport are predictable due to the severity of the injuries and vital parts of the body are affected.

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar, sob a ótica da Pegada Hídrica e suas dimensões azul, verde e cinza, o processo de produção da soja nos municípios de Barreiras, São Desidério, Formosa do Rio Preto e Luís Eduardo Magalhães, localizados na região Oeste da Bahia, durante o período de 2006 a 2019. Adotou-se a metodologia proposta por Hoekstra et al. (2011) para estimar os volumes totais de água e por tipo de consumo para cada município. As maiores pegadas hídricas azul foram encontradas em Formosa do Rio Preto, verde em Barreiras e cinza em São Desidério e Formosa do Rio Preto. Nestes dois últimos municípios também foram consumidos os maiores volumes de água virtual para a produção de soja. Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze, from the perspective of the Water Footprint and its blue, green and gray dimensions, the soybean production process in the municipalities of Barreiras, São Desidério, Formosa do Rio Preto and Luís Eduardo Magalhães, located in the western region of Bahia, during the period from 2006 to 2019. The methodology proposed by Hoekstra et al (2011) to estimate the total volumes of water and by type of consumption for each municipality. The largest blue water footprints were found in Formosa do Rio Preto, green in Barreiras, and gray in São Desidério and Formosa do Rio Preto. These last two municipalities also consumed the largest volumes of virtual water for soybean production.

Abstract

Abstract The low-grade inflammation is pivotal in obesity and its comorbidities; however, the inflammatory proteins are out of target for traditional drug therapy. Omega-3 (ω3) fatty acids can modulate the downstream signaling of Toll-like receptor (TLR) and tumor necrosis factor-α receptor (TNFα) through GPR120, a G-protein-coupled receptor, a mechanism not yet elucidated in humans. This work aims to investigate if the ω3 supplementation, at a feasible level below the previously recommended level in the literature, is enough to disrupt the inflammation and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER-stress), and also if in acute treatment (3 h) ω3 can activate the GPR120 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and leukocytes from overweight non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) participants. The R270H variant of the Ffar4 (GPR120 gene) will also be explored about molecular responses and blood lipid profiles. A triple-blind, prospective clinical trial will be conducted in overweight men and women, aged 19–75 years, randomized into placebo or supplemented (2.2 g of ω3 [EPA+DHA]) groups for 28 days. For sample calculation, it was considered the variation of TNFα protein and a 40% dropout rate, obtaining 22 individuals in each group. Volunteers will be recruited among patients with NAFLD diagnosis. Anthropometric parameters, food intake, physical activity, total serum lipids, complete fatty acid blood profile, and glycemia will be evaluated pre- and post-supplementation. In the PBMC and neutrophils, the protein content and gene expression of markers related to inflammation (TNFα, MCP1, IL1β, IL6, IL10, JNK, and TAK1), ER-stress (ATF1, ATF6, IRE1, XBP1, CHOP, eIF2α, eIF4, HSP), and ω3 pathway (GPR120, β-arrestin2, Tab1/2, and TAK1) will be evaluated using Western blot and RT-qPCR. Participants will be genotyped for the R270H (rs116454156) variant using the TaqMan assay. 44. Reconceptualizing Risk and High School Noncompletion: The Case of Latina/o Ninth-Grade Leavers in an Urban School

Abstract

Background: Many "dropout" studies use the concept of risk as a framework for understanding the persistent problem of high school noncompletion among students of color in urban schools. This research, which frames risks as statistical probabilities and largely focuses on static and individual risk factors, does not account for the myriad ways in which risks for school failure are produced within everyday school processes. Purpose: This study employs a theory of risk--as indicative of uncertainty about how current circumstances impact future outcomes--that considers both objective and socially constructed dimensions of risk to understand how uncertainties about graduation arise and are negotiated within the high school context in ways that contribute to risk for, and eventuate in, school-leaving in the ninth grade. Participants: Participants are 25 Latina/o school-leavers, 18-24 years of age, who attended the same high-poverty, high-minority urban public high school and left permanently in the ninth grade. Research Design: Drawn from a larger participatory action research study of young adult school-leavers, study data were participants' accounts of their schooling experiences, drawn from in-depth interviews and school policy documents. We examine these data to understand how a variety of school-specific factors and interactions between them contributed to risks for school-leaving and participants' eventual departures from school. As guided by our framework, we analyze established risk factors and participants' perceptions of uncertainty about school success and graduation, as related to school structures and policies, school practices, and social interactions. This includes attention to the transition from middle to high school, which prior research identifies as significant to school-leaving in the ninth grade. Findings: Study findings indicate that, in addition to shifting expectations from eighth to ninth grade, policies, practices, and interactions among participants and high school personnel contributed to risks for school-leaving. Importantly, the ways in which uncertainties about school success were processed by individuals and through policy and practice both heightened and attenuated risk for high school noncompletion. Conclusions: We argue that conceptualizations of risk that include its socially constructed dimensions will enhance researchers' capacities to identify and understand the complexity of factors that contribute to school-leaving. This approach to risk also points to the need for further research on everyday school processes, the perspectives of school-leavers, and the ways schools--particularly those that serve low-income youth of color in urban communities--contribute to the problem of high school noncompletion.

Abstract

Renewable producers can offer selling bids with very low marginal cost since they are not obliged to include on any cost related to the use of energy from the wind or sun. Accordingly, when the Market Operator integrates a renewable bid in the merit-order generation curve, all the generators based on conventional technologies, with higher marginal cost due to the cost of fuels, are displaced to the right. The right-shifting of the merit-order generation curve leads to a lower clearing price, a small increment of the traded energy (almost inelastic demand curve), and a reduction of the total cost of the energy traded in the wholesale market. This is the key mechanism of the well-known merit-order effect of renewables. Load-shifting (demand-side management) plans are expected to yield a reduction of the cost of the traded energy for the customers, since the cost-saving due to the energy eschewed at peak hours would be greater than the extra cost due to the increased demand at off-peak hours. This work will show that the main effects of load-shifting on the market are qualitatively similar to that of renewables, which exemplify the existence a “merit-order effect of load-shifting”. To analyse the characteristics of the merit-order effect of load-shifting, a simplified model has been developed, based on the displacement of the generation and demand curves. A set of scenarios has been generated in order to quantify the main effects on the Spanish/Iberian market for 2015.
