El propósito de este artículo es analizar la dramaturgia de Óscar Liera (1946-1990) cuya temática sobre los grupos sexuales minoritarios coadyuvó a visibilizar la problemática de la comunidad LGBT y, por ende, a plantear la necesidad de construir en México una cultura del derecho a la diversidad sexual durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Para ello, se realiza un estudio cualitativo con base en la historia cultural y la crítica literaria, pues a partir de la teoría del poder de Michel Foucault se aborda la representación de una serie de dispositivos disciplinarios orientados a la corrección o la exclusión de los grupos sexuales minoritarios, de los “anormales”. De esta manera, con piezas como Los camaleones (1979) o Los caminos solos (1987), el autor puso de relieve —junto con otros escritores— el conflicto de la incomprensión familiar acerca del lesbianismo, la homosexualidad y la bisexualidad, aunado al ocultamiento, la vergüenza y la culpa, con lo que trató de crear conciencia en un contexto social caracterizado por la homofobia y los crímenes de odio. Se concluye que la dramaturgia de Óscar Liera es un documento cultural de gran importancia, ya que es una crítica a la realidad mexicana de los años setenta y ochenta, y con ella el autor asumió un papel social al intervenir en la discusión de la esfera pública al concebir el teatro como un foro de denuncias.

Time demands are among the primary challenges for college student-athletes. They have to attend to classes and study halls as well as athletic-related activities such as training and competition. Both academic and athletic tasks require tremendous amount of time. Thus, it is argued that academics and athletics compete for the student-athletes’ attention. This research examined the impact of academic and athletic factors on student-athletes’ time use in academics and athletics using a subset of the 2015 United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) GOALS data. The relationships of academic identity, school belongingness, athletic identity, and athletic expectations with academic time use and athletic time spent were tested. Differences on the variables of interest according to race, gender, and division level were also investigated. Our findings revealed that academic identity is a positive predictor of academic time use and a negative predictor of athletic time use, while athletic identity is a positive predictor of athletic time spent. We also determined a contrasting influence of athletic expectations in time commitments. Lastly, we likewise found significant effects of race, gender, and division level on the academic and athletic engagements of college athletes. Our findings have implications on the development of programs for athletic department to optimize the academic and athletic experiences of college student-athletes.

Digital Rocks Portal (DRP, https://www.digitalrocksportal.org) organizes and preserves imaged datasets and experimental measurements of porous materials in subsurface, and beyond, with the mission to connect them to simulation and analysis, as well as educate the research community. We have over 150 projects represented in more than 200 publications, and an active community that reuses the data, most recently in multiple machine learning applications for automating image analysis as well as the prediction of transport. Such automation is crucial for performing formation evaluation tasks in near-real time. We present benchmark datasets that have played a role in recent machine learning prediction successes in the field. We further discuss the vision for further research advances, educational materials, as well as growth and sustainability plan of this digital rock physics community resource. In particular, we are in the process of expanding into a broader repository of engineered porous materials, specifically those for energy storage and the portal will transition to Digital Porous Media (DPM) in near future.

The research evaluated the effect of organic and conventional management on soil physicochemical indicators and performance indicators of CCN-51 cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.). A completely randomized block design was applied, with four treatments: T1 (control), T2 (compost), T3 (NPK) and T4 (compost + NPK) and four repetitions. Physical indicators were evaluated: DA10 and DA20 bulk density and resistance to penetrability RP10 and RP20 (strata from 0.00 to 0.10 m and 0.10 to 0.20 m), chemical indicators: pH, MO, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al and CEC and performance indicators: number of fruits, fruit index and yield per hectare. The results did not show differences in DA and RP in both strata; Differences were found in the indicators pH, MO, P, Al and CEC, T2 and T4 had a greater effect on pH and CEC. Differences were found in the fruit index, in addition, the highest yield per hectare was presented by T2 (1125 kg/ha), although it did not show differences. In conclusion, there were significant chemical changes, except in physical indicators and performance indicators, showing organic production as a viable alternative by not showing differences and exceeding almond yield to chemical treatment.

Se evaluó la eficiencia de 4 formulados entomopatógenos para el control de la plaga Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) en el maíz morado. Se usó el diseño de bloques completamente aleatorio con cinco tratamientos: T1 (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki), T2 (Bacillus subtilis), T3 (Metarhizium anisopliae), T4 (Beauveria bassiana) y T5 (testigo en blanco) con cuatro repeticiones. Se usaron las dosis de 40 ml/20L H2O, con una frecuencia de 7 días, por tres meses, evaluando la eficiencia a los 3 días después de cada aplicación. En laboratorio se estimó el porcentaje de mortalidad con 3 larvas a partir del tercer estadio; los resultados fueron sometidos a la fórmula de Henderson-Tilton y Abbott, la prueba de Anova y Duncan. En campo el T1 registró menor incidencia de larvas (1%), alta mortalidad (100%) y mayor rendimiento del cultivo (4 533 kg/ha). En laboratorio, el T1 mostró alta mortalidad (100%) de los estadios larvales tres y cuatro; en los estadios cinco y seis el T4 fue el más eficiente (100%). En conclusión, el entomopatógeno B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki es apropiado para el control de la plaga especialmente de los estadios larvales tres y cuatro, seguida por B. bassiana en los estadios cinco y seis. ABSTRACT The efficiency of 4 entomopathogenic formulations for the control of the pest Spodoptera frugiperda in purple corn was evaluated. A completely randomized block design was used with five treatments: T1 (Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki), T2 (Bacillus subtilis), T3 (Metarhizium anisopliae), T4 (Beauveria bassiana) and T5 (blank control) with four repetitions. The doses of 40 ml/20L H2O were used, with a frequency of 7 days, during three months, evaluating the efficiency 3 days after each application. In the laboratory, the mortality percentage was estimated with 3 larvae from the third stage; the results were subjected to the Henderson-Tilton and Abbott formula, the Anova and Duncan test. In the field, T1 showed a lower incidence of larvae (1%), high mortality (100%) and higher crop yield (4 533 kg / ha). In the laboratory, T1 showed high mortality (100%) of larval stages three and four; in stages five and six, T4 was the most efficient (100%). In conclusion, the entomopathogens B. thuringiensis var kurstaki is appropriate for the control of the pest, especially in third and fourth instar larvae, followed by B. bassiana in five and six instar larvae. Phytochemical screening of ethanolic extracts of Acnistus arborescens (L.) Schltdl. (Solanaceae); Albizia multiflora (Kunth) Barneby & J.W. Grimes (Fabaceae); Capparidastrum petiolare (Kunth) Hutch. (Capparaceae); Colicodendron scabridum (Kunth) Seem. (Capparaceae); Gronovia scandens L. (Loasaceae); Gustavia angustifolia Benth. (Lecythidaceae); Piscidia carthagenensis Jacq. (Fabaceae); Psidium rostratum Mc Vaugh (Myrtaceae); Psidium guayaquilense Landrum & Cornejo (Myrtaceae); Psidium cf. rostratum Mc Vaugh (Myrtaceae); Salicornia fruticosa L. (Amaranthaceae); Simira ecuadorensis (Standl.) Steyerm. (Rubiaceae); Ruellia floribunda Hook. (Acanthaceae) were assayed. Alkaloids, tannins and terpenoids were the secondary metabolites most frequently found, while flavonoids, quinones, anthraquinones, steroids and saponins were present in less proportion. Folin-Ciocalteu method was used to quantify the total phenolic content in the ethanolic extracts using a calibration curve of gallic acid. The range between 941.97 ± 30.69 and 241.54 ± 15.54 GAE/mg dry extract, has been observed for Psidium guayaquilense and Acnistus arborescens, respectively. On the other hand, antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extracts was evaluated using the disk diffusion agar method against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Vibrio parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802. P. rostratum, P. guayaquilense, P. cf. rostratum, R. floribunda and S. ecuadorensis were the most active extracts against the bacterial assays with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging between 20 and 100 ppm. According to literature, it is most likely that this is the first report on phytochemical screening, total phenolic content and antibacterial activity of ethanolic extracts of these species. We consider the problem of the radiation losses by fast-traveling particles traversing two-dimensional (2d) materials or thin films. After review¬ing the screening of electromagnetic fields by two dimensional conducting ma¬terials, we obtain the energy loss by a fast particle traversing such a material or film. In particular, we discuss the pattern of radiation emitted by monolayer graphene treated within a hydrodynamic approximation. These results are com¬pared with recent published results using similar approximations and, having in mind a potential application to particle detection, we briefly discuss how one can improve on the signals obtained by using other two-dimensional materials.

This article familiarizes the reader with AIDS among Asians and Pacific Islanders (A&PIs) in New York City. The first section describes the epidemiology of AIDS among A&PIs in the United States and in New York City. In the United States 4,131 A&PIs have been diagnosed with AIDS. The age at diagnosis in the United States has been relatively stable over the past decade, although the proportion of diagnoses represented by older A&PIs (aged 40 to 49) has been increasing in New York City. The proportion of heterosexual diagnoses have been relatively stable over the past 6 years, whereas other racial groups have shown increases in the proportion of heterosexual transmissions. Data on defining opportunistic infections suggest that a different clinical pattern exists among A&PIs when compared with other racial groups diagnosed in New York City and the United States whereby A&PIs exhibit the highest proportion of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia of all groups. The second section provides a discussion of some of the issues facing HIV positive A&PIs and their families in the process of accessing services at community-based HIV service organizations in New York City. One broad concept emerged from the client focus group that served to organize the analysis: family--a compelling case for HIV service organizations to initiate, expand, and maintain family services, however family is defined. The location of A&PI AIDS service organizations and its implications for recentering families in the caregiving process is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In the treatment of portal hypertension in pediatric patients, some type of porto-systemic shunt is indicated, which is an unusual surgical procedure in patients under two years of age, due to the low incidence of this disease at this age and the increase in the number of complications. Objective: We present our experience and results with this procedure in patients under two years of age seen in the Hepatobiliopancreatic general surgery service at Instituto Nacional de PediatríaDiscussion: The causes of portal hypertension in children are varied. Among the extrahepatic causes, the most common is cavernomatous portal degeneration. Children with portal hypertension under two years have severe symptoms such as recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding or anemia; others have hypersplenism data. In many cases medical management is useless and a surgical procedure require such as a portosystemic shunt in order to decrease the size of varicose esophageal veins and prevent bleeding that threatens the patient’s life. Conclusion: The iliac-mesenteric-caval shunt in patients under two years is a feasible alternative that improves the clinical status of the patient, reducing the risk of bleeding. Congenital colon pouch syndrome, is an infrequent clinical condition in which the colon is totally o partially replaced by a cystic dilatation, and is associated with an anorectal malformation; which may be a urinary tract fistula, a vaginal or vestibule fistula, or a cul-de-sac. We present a rare variant of the anorrectal malformation, with two cases of colon pouch types II and III respectively. The diagnosis was suspected in a plain X-ray and on a distal colostogram. It was confirmed during surgery. The controversial aspects of surgical options are discussed, and emphasis is made on the importance of the follow-up of patients with anorectal malformations, including the need for bowel rehabilitation.

Introduction: One thousand children with anorectal malformation (ARM) are born in Mexico every year. In spite of surgical correction, these children continue to present functional fecal problems (constipation and fecal incontinence). We conducted an Intestinal Rehabilitation Program (IRP) which consists of an initial rectal disimpaction followed by administration of stimulant-type laxative (senna), with favorable results. The objective of this paper is to describe the effectiveness of the Intestinal Rehabilitation Program/bowel management program (IRP/BMP) in children with constipation secondary to surgically corrected ARM. Materials and methods: A descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study, describing which was the IRP effectiveness in children with constipation secondary to ARM. The effectiveness was measured by means of a construct of three variables (presence of daily bowel movements, absence of fecal staining, and having a plain abdominal radiograph without fecal residue in left colon and rectum after passing stool). All children who had surgically corrected ARM and constipation in two referral centers were included. Results. One hundred and fifty one children with ARM were included: 21.85% had fecal incontinence, and 67.33% had constipation. Of this group 88.1% showed good response to the BMP. The mean dose of sennoside was 8.45 mg/kg, 95% CI: 5.94-11.12 mg/kg (199.5 mg total dose, 95% CI: 139.50-259.50 mg). Colicky abdominal pain occurred in 5.8% of the patients. Discussion. The use of sennoside has had a positive impact on our patients by means of colonic and rectal emptying without fecal soiling. Introduction: Distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS) or “meconium ileus equivalent” is a blockage of the terminal ileum or of the ascending colon caused by inspissated stools in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) beyond the neonatal period. We report the case of a girl who presented with DIOS as an unusual manifestation which lead to the diagnosis of CF. Case presentation: A 7 year-old female presented with bowel ob- struction that required an exploratory laparotomy. Abundant inspis- sated stools were found obstructing the distal ileum. An enterotomy with extraction of the inspissated material was performed. A few days later the patient presented once more with acute abdomen requiring a second exploratory laparotomy. Dehiscence of the intestinal suture line was found and an ileostomy with mucous fistula was carried out. The histopathologic study showed findings compatible with CF and the sweat chloride test confirmed the diagnosis. Discussion: DIOS as the first manifestation of CF is very unusual. It is important to know this entity and to have a high index of suspicion to diagnose CF when it is found. If DIOS is suspected, conservative treatment should be tried before subjecting the patient to surgery.

We investigated the effects of Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans and the respective culture supernatants on human platelet aggregation (PA). Both yeasts were unable to aggregate the platelets directly. On the other hand, cells of these yeasts significantly (P < 0.01) inhibited PA at concentrations equal to or higher than 1 x 10(6) cells/mL for C. albicans and equal to or higher than 1 x 10(5) cells/mL for C. neoformans. When the supernatants of one-week broth cultures were added to the activated platelets no inhibition in aggregation was observed. Apparently somatic components of these yeasts, but not their metabolic products, exert an antagonistic effect on the aggregation of human platelets, possibly aiding the fungi in their evasion of the microbicidal defense system during vascular dissemination.
