Objetivo. Identificar las capacidades tecnológicas y describir la apropiación de uso en una comunidad de mujeres de una zona en condiciones de vulnerabilidad de Colombia. Método. Estudio transversal observacional realizado en la subregión de Urabá (Colombia). Se realizó una encuesta a 1 478 mujeres de entre 18 y 49 años en centros de atención primaria en salud acerca de sus capacidades tecnológicas, experiencia con el uso de la información alojada en la red y apropiación de la tecnología. Resultados. El acceso y uso de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) variaban según la edad, el nivel educativo y el estrato socioeconómico, con diferencias en preferencias en cuanto a la información y el consumo crítico de esta. Conclusión. En este estudio, las mujeres en nuestro estudio enfrentan múltiples barreras de acceso para el uso apropiado de las TIC para la promoción de la salud. La apropiación de estas herramientas en Colombia, específicamente en la subregión de Urabá, es un desafío complejo que requiere un enfoque integral y multidimensional.

Abstract Background Homeless shelters have emerged as components of the social services network, playing an important role in providing health care to the homeless population. The aim of this study was to evaluate an individualized physical therapy intervention for people experiencing homelessness and to determine the relationship between self-perceived variables. Methods Pre and post study, setting at the “Santa y Real Hermandad de Nuestra Señora del Refugio y Piedad” homeless shelter in Zaragoza, Spain. Participants were people experiencing homelessness with musculoskeletal disorders who attended a physical therapy service at shelter facilities. A physical therapy program was implemented including health education, exercise and manual therapy, electrotherapy, thermotherapy and bandaging. Demographic variables (age and gender), nationality, employment situation, educational level, pain location, number of painful areas, feeling of loneliness (3-Item Loneliness Scale; values from 3 to 9), pain intensity (Numerical Pain Rating Scale [NPRS]; from 0 to 10) and self-perceived health (Clinical Global Impression [CGI]; from 1 to 7). Results Sixty-four homeless people (age of 46.4 ± 10.9 years) participated in the study. Musculoskeletal pain was reported by 98.4% of subjects, with moderate pain intensities (6.1), and 48.4% presenting with pain at multiple sites. Perceptions of loneliness were low (3.7 ± 2.5) and self-perceived health status was moderately ill (3.5 ± 1.7). Positive significant correlations were identified between pain intensity and self-perceived health. The average number of sessions was 1.5 (± 0.8), with manual therapy (35.6%) followed by health education (23.5%) being the most frequently used techniques. Both pain and self-perceived health improved after treatment, even following a brief intervention. Conclusions This study demonstrates the potentially negative impact of untreated pain on the self-perceived health of homeless individuals with musculoskeletal disorders that should be targeted for consideration. The findings suggest that a paradigm shift in pain management, including a physical therapy service in shelters, is needed to address the rehabilitation demands of these individuals in a real-life context. In the digital scenario, where news media organizations face technological disruption, innovation has been identified as key to the survival of journalism. While legacy media, rooted in a traditional mindset, have reacted more slowly to the changes that have occurred, digital native media have been better able to engage with audiences and adapt to new distribution platforms. Given this scenario, this article examined the perception of experts in the field of communication and journalism—both journalists and scholars—regarding the approach to journalistic innovation in digital media (N = 11). Specifically, this research sought to identify areas where the need for innovation is perceived to be greater and to determine the pending challenges in this process of digital innovation. To address these purposes, a descriptive qualitative methodology was applied, using the focus group technique. The findings revealed that an audience-centered approach to innovation is proposed to escape technological determinism and respond effectively to the needs and demands of audiences. This perspective requires embracing diversity in content, advocating for new formats and narratives, and adapting to consumption patterns on new platforms. There is a perception of incremental innovation in digital media, focusing on the introduction of small improvements and calling for a slowdown in processes for greater effectiveness. However, the experts noted a lack of pedagogy within organizations, of collaboration with key sectors of the industry, of investment in human capital, of qualitative audience measurement methods, and even of innovation in business models.

Una de las transformaciones más recientes en el ámbito de la comunicación digital ha sido la impulsada por la introducción de la inteligencia artificial y la automatización. La comunicación política ha incorporado estas tecnologías a algunos de sus procesos y tareas, alterando la forma de relacionarse con los públicos, de producir contenidos y de poner en circulación los mensajes. Con todo, la utilización de estos sistemas también introduce riesgos y desafíos para la democracia y la esfera pública. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la investigación científica internacional centrada en el uso de la inteligencia artificial y la automatización en el ámbito de la comunicación política. Se aboga por una perspectiva holística a fin de profundizar en las características de la producción científica y en las particularidades de esta comunicación política algorítmica. Para alcanzar este propósito se parte de un diseño metodológico basado en una revisión sistematizada de la literatura, aplicando un enfoque tanto cuantitativo como cualitativo. Los resultados constatan que se trata de un campo incipiente que destaca por una evolución irregular, el trabajo colaborativo entre investigadores, la producción en inglés, las aproximaciones cualitativas y el interés por el estudio del impacto de los bots, la propaganda computacional y la manipulación de la opinión pública. Además, se identifican dos ejes temáticos centrales: usos y características de la comunicación política mediada por inteligencia artificial; y amenazas y desafíos que se derivan del uso de estas tecnologías.

Abstract Background Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv) is a rare genetic disease that negatively affects patients' quality of life through the involvement of various organs and tissues. Despite a large amount of research on medical and psychosocial interventions, the impact of occupational therapy (OT) on patients with ATTRv is not well understood. Objective The aim of this study was to develop an OT programme to improve the daily functioning and quality of life of patients with ATTRv. Methods Fourteen patients with ATTRv were interviewed. Together they developed short- and medium-term occupational goals. Patients received the OT intervention for six months. Outcomes were measured using scores for activities of daily living and psychological well-being. Results The study found that OT can have a positive impact as a complementary intervention to medical and other psychosocial treatments. Of the 14 patients, 12 maintained the same scores in activities of daily living. Two deteriorated and eight improved their psychological scores. Conclusion This study highlights the need for further research in this area and the importance of OT in the management of patients with ATTRv. Early intervention is of paramount importance and further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effects of OT interventions in patients with ATTRv.

Although we have always lived among images and information, cinema first and the development of new information and communication technologies second are producing changes in the perception of space and time that affect both architecture and the arts in general. Throughout the 20th century, modifications of our perceptual apparatus have been reflected in artistic practices in general, and architectural practices in particular, where multimedia supports and moving images are the substance and material of architecture. These supports are the substance with which some of the most recent architectural forms and volumes have been constructed or projected, and they are also the creators of new urban landscapes. By analyzing some formal codifications in the visual strategy of a limited number of film proposals, it is possible to identify key relationships between art, video art, and prominent examples of advanced architecture since the mid-20th century, whose corollary extends to more recent decades. This research allows us to outline an initial genealogy of artistic practices and experiences that span the last century, where the idea of experiencing architecture among images has become a central theme.

Cinemapp is a web application (webapp) that enables the individual or group discovery of the Cinematic Ecosystem of the city of Valladolid. This city is distinguished for its architectural heritage and cinematic history, with numerous cinemas that have vanished and films that have been shot there, thus comprising a unique combination of architectural and cinematic heritage. The application fosters an interactive experience that facilitates the exploration and enjoyment of the city's cinematic history, as well as contemplation of film, media, and new technologies. The project compiles a wide range of historical information and citizen memories in various digital formats, which nourish the graphical database named FilmcityDB. By combining both resources and employing the Valladolid context as an extrapolatable prototype, users can explore different routes and immerse themselves in the accumulated cinematic history of the city since the past century.

Abstract Background Hyperthermia-based therapies have shown great potential for clinical applications such as for the antitumor and antipathogenic activities. Within all strategies, the so-called photothermal therapy proposes to induce the hyperthermia by the remote laser radiation on a photothermal conversion agent, in contact with the target tissue. Methods This paper reviews the most relevant in vitro and in vivo studies focused on NIR laser-induced hyperthermia due to photoexcitation of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Relevant parameters such as the amount of GO/rGO, the influence of the laser wavelength and power density are considered. Moreover, the required temperature and exposure time for each antitumor/antipathogenic case are collected and unified in a thermal dose parameter: the CEM43. Results The calculated CEM43 thermal doses revealed a great variability for the same type of tumor/strain. In order to detect potential tendencies, the values were classified into four ranges, varying from CEM43 60ºC). Conclusions The ability of GO/rGO as effective photothermal conversion agents to promote a controlled hyperthermia is proven. The variability found for the CEM43 thermal doses on the reviewed studies reveals the potentiality to evaluate, for each application, the use of lower temperatures, by modulating time and/or repetitions in the doses.

The neuronal calcium sensor 1 (NCS-1), an EF-hand Ca2+ binding protein, and Ric-8A coregulate synapse number and probability of neurotransmitter release. Recently, the structures of Ric-8A bound to Gα have revealed how Ric-8A phosphorylation promotes Gα recognition and activity as a chaperone and guanine nucleotide exchange factor. However, the molecular mechanism by which NCS-1 regulates Ric-8A activity and its interaction with Gα subunits is not well understood. Given the interest in the NCS-1/Ric-8A complex as a therapeutic target in nervous system disorders, it is necessary to shed light on this molecular mechanism of action at atomic level. We have reconstituted NCS-1/Ric-8A complexes to conduct a multimodal approach and determine the sequence of Ca2+ signals and phosphorylation events that promote the interaction of Ric-8A with Gα. Our data show that the binding of NCS-1 and Gα to Ric-8A are mutually exclusive. Importantly, NCS-1 induces a structural rearrangement in Ric-8A that traps the protein in a conformational state that is inaccessible to casein kinase II-mediated phosphorylation, demonstrating one aspect of its negative regulation of Ric-8A-mediated G-protein signaling. Functional experiments indicate a loss of Ric-8A guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) activity toward Gα when complexed with NCS-1, and restoration of nucleotide exchange activity upon increasing Ca2+ concentration. Finally, the high-resolution crystallographic data reported here define the NCS-1/Ric-8A interface and will allow the development of therapeutic synapse function regulators with improved activity and selectivity.

Abstract Background Headache is among the most frequent symptoms of acute COVID-19 infection. Its mechanisms remain obscure, but due to its migraine-like characteristics, the activation of the trigeminal system could account for its underlying pathophysiology. Methods Our aim was to compare the serum levels of CGRP, as a theoretical marker of trigemino-vascular activation, in 25 COVID-19 inpatients with lung involvement experiencing headache, against 15 COVID-19 inpatients without headache and with those of 25 matched healthy controls with no headache history. Las tecnologías de realidad virtual y vídeo 360 grados se introdujeron en las redacciones y laboratorios de innovación a mediados de la década de 2010 como una nueva forma de contar historias. Con todo, el vídeo 360 grados se postuló como alternativa más viable frente a la auténtica realidad virtual, tanto por inversión como por tiempos de producción. Los medios exploraron sus posibilidades al abrigo de un periodismo inmersivo hasta su declive a partir de los años 2018 y 2019. Esta investigación analiza el impacto que el vídeo 360 grados ha tenido en la producción periodística atendiendo a tres perspectivas: el valor del formato para el relato, la narrativa inmersiva y los retos que condicionan su consolidación. Para ello, se realizan entrevistas semiestructuradas en profundidad a profesionales y expertos académicos en este ámbito (N = 11). La experiencia en primera persona emerge como factor diferencial, introduciendo una dimensión vivencial en el consumo. A su vez, el formato exige otra forma de contar el relato, adaptado a la inmersividad y a la espacialidad. Su viabilidad futura resulta incierta por su elevado coste, la ausencia de un modelo de negocio sostenible y la baja penetración de las gafas de realidad virtual.

Highlights - About one third of the patients who undergo a thrombectomy for acute stroke experience headache directly related to the procedure. - Having a previous history of primary headache is associated with the presence of headache after thrombectomy. - Headache related to thrombectomy usually coincides with the distribution of the affected artery, although it is bilateral in 45% of the cases, mostly oppressive, of an average duration between 1 and 2 days and of a moderate intensity.

Desde mediados del siglo XX se observa un aumento de prácticas arquitectónicas singulares basadas en la incorporación de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) dotando a la arquitectura de pieles y paramentos mediáticos. Este artículo busca sentar las bases de un glosario de ideas, así como una clasificación abierta desde la que poder abordar de manera ordenada el estudio de esta tendencia de vanguardia. Concretamente se analizan dos líneas de investigación. La primera profundiza en los antecedentes de los primeros sistemas mediáticos incorporados al diseño arquitectónico. La segunda muestrea el abanico de ejemplos de arquitecturas mediáticas construidas que mejor han reflejado esta tendencia tecnológica en las últimas décadas. Mediante la revisión bibliográfica, apoyada en una muestra intencional de cien obras seleccionadas y clasificadas, las conclusiones apuntan a una serie de nuevos paradigmas que nos permiten identificar cuándo el entorno arquitectónico responde positivamente al calificativo de mediático y por qué.

Esta investigación tiene como objetivo principal estudiar el impacto de la pandemia ocasionada por el COVID-19 en la educación musical superior. De esta forma, se analizan los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje y, concretamente, la modalidad de educación online adoptada en este ámbito durante este período. Asimismo, se profundiza en la implantación de nuevas perspectivas pedagógicas motivadas por este contexto sociosanitario, con un interés específico a la hora de abordar las prácticas instrumentales conjuntas. La situación de emergencia y de crisis ocasionada por el coronavirus necesita de una acción educativa y social que, en este caso, sea capaz de asumir y de responder ante la obligación de generar un proceso educativo que incida en una práctica instrumental conjunta de calidad en los centros musicales de enseñanza superior. Para ello, desarrollamos y proponemos un nuevo modelo metodológico que, respetando las limitaciones suscitadas por este contexto, tiene presentes las necesidades, inquietudes y características individuales del alumnado que cursa este tipo de asignaturas.

Cells convert electrical signals into chemical outputs to facilitate the active transport of information across larger distances. This electrical-to-chemical conversion requires a tightly regulated expression of ion channels. Alterations of ion channel expression provide landmarks of numerous pathological diseases, such as cardiac arrhythmia, epilepsy, or cancer. Although the activity of ion channels can be locally regulated by external light or chemical stimulus, it remains challenging to coordinate the expression of ion channels on extended spatial–temporal scales. Here, we engineered yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to read and convert chemical concentrations into a dynamic potassium channel expression. A synthetic dual-feedback circuit controls the expression of engineered potassium channels through phytohormones auxin and salicylate to produce a macroscopically coordinated pulses of the plasma membrane potential. Our study provides a compact experimental model to control electrical activity through gene expression in eukaryotic cell populations setting grounds for various cellular engineering, synthetic biology, and potential therapeutic applications.

Hemp seeds are currently used mainly for oil extraction, generating waste that could be potentially exploited further as a source of proteins and other bioactives. This study aims to valorise hemp waste (Cannabis sativa, L.) from previous oil extraction as a source of protein by analysing the effect of high-pressure processing (HPP) pre-treatments (0–600 MPa; 4–8 min) combined with conventional or ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) methods on protein recovery/purity, amino acid composition, and protein structure. Overall, maximum protein recovery (≈62%) was achieved with HPP (200 MPa, 8 min) with UAE. The highest protein purity (≈76%) was achieved with HPP (200 MPa, 4 min) with UAE. Overall, UAE improved the extraction of all amino acids compared to conventional extraction independently of HPP pre-treatments. Arg/Lys ratios of the protein isolates ranged between 3.78 and 5.34, higher than other vegetable protein sources. SDS-PAGE did not show visible differences amongst the protein isolates. These results seem to indicate the advantages of the use of UAE for protein recovery in the food industry and the need for further studies to optimise HPP/UAE for an accurate estimation of processing costs and their effects on the composition and structure of proteins to contribute further to the circular economy.

Synchronizing gene expression across eukaryotic communities presents complex challenges. Here the authors construct a compact synthetic system inspired by bacteria response to antibiotics that robustly converts chemical rhythms into synchronized gene expression across populations.

International adoption has declined in recent years, although the adoption of children with special needs has arisen. We aim to describe our experience in the international adoption of children with special needs and to analyze the concordance between the pathologies included in pre-adoption reports and the diagnosis made upon arrival. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study including internationally adopted children with special needs evaluated at a reference Spanish unit between 2016 and 2019. Epidemiological and clinical variables were collected from medical records, and pre-adoption reports were compared to established diagnoses following their evaluation and complementary tests. Fifty-seven children were included: 36.8% females, a median age of 27 months [IQR:17–39], mostly coming from China (63.2%) and Vietnam (31.6%). The main pathologies described in the pre-adoption reports were congenital surgical malformations (40.3%), hematological (22.6%), and neurological (24.6%). The initial diagnosis that motivated the international adoption via special needs was confirmed in 79% of the children. After evaluation, 14% were diagnosed with weight and growth delay, and 17.5% with microcephaly, not previously reported. Infectious diseases were also prevalent (29.8%). According to our series, the pre-adoption reports of children with special needs appear accurate, with a low rate of new diagnoses. Pre-existing conditions were confirmed in almost 80% of cases.

Changes in semen microbiota are associated with alterations to sperm quality and fertility. However, the microbiota from most livestock species has not yet been studied. Goats are seasonal breeders, but semen microbiota has never been described in this species, and it is unknown how seasonality affects it. Our study objective is 2-fold: to describe the microbiota in goat buck ejaculates and to determine if it differs between breeding and non-breeding seasons. Semen from six males of the Murciano-Granadina breed was collected during both seasons. Two replicates were performed per male and season on different days. The microbiota was characterized by genomic sequencing technology. Sperm quality was also evaluated. Repetition was not significant for the studied variables. Sperm velocities were higher for the breeding than for the non-breeding season. The ejaculates from both seasons also differed in the proportion of apoptotic spermatozoa. The five dominant phyla were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes during the breeding season and Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Cyanobacteria during the non-breeding season. The dominant genus during both seasons was Ureaplasma. Differences in microbial community structure (the beta diversity) were found. A decrease in the relative abundance of the genus Faecalibacterium and an increase in the genera Sphingomonas and Halomonas were observed in the ejaculates collected during the breeding season. Sphingomonas and Faecalibacterium abundance favorably and unfavorably correlated with sperm quality, respectively. In conclusion, the semen microbiota from goat bucks varies between breeding and non-breeding seasons, and the microbiota remains stable for 7 days within a season. In addition, the genera Sphingomonas and Faecalibacterium could be possible biomarkers of semen quality in goat bucks. These results contribute to an in-depth understanding of the effects of reproductive seasonality on goat buck ejaculates.

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1)-derived amplicon vectors are unique in their ability to accommodate large DNA molecules allowing whole genomic loci to be included with all of their regulatory elements. Additional advantages of these amplicons include their minimal toxicity and ability to persist as episomes, with negligible risk of insertional mutagenesis, being particularly well-suited for gene therapy of neurological disorders due to their outstanding ability to deliver genes into neurons and other neural cells. However, extensive gene therapy application has been hindered by difficulties in vector production. This work improved HSV-1 amplicons production by genetic modification of the packaging cell line and optimization of the culture medium. A stably-transfected Vero 2-2 cell line overexpressing the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein was generated, exhibiting an increased resistance to apoptosis, prolonged culture duration, and a significant improvement in viral vector production. Additionally, supplementation of the growth medium with antioxidants, polyamines, amino acids, and reduced glutathione further increased the yield of packaged amplicon vectors. With these modifications, HSV-1 amplicons could be isolated from culture supernatants instead of cell lysates, leading to vector preparations with higher titer and purity and paving the way for generation of stable cell lines that are capable of continuous herpesviral vector production.

Abstract Staphylococcal mastitis is a major health problem in humans and livestock that leads to economic loss running in millions. This process is currently one of the main reasons for culling adult rabbit does. Surprisingly, the two most prevalent S. aureus lineages isolated from non-differentiable natural clinical mastitis in rabbits (ST121 and ST96) generate different immune responses. This study aimed to genetically compare both types of strains to search for possible dissimilarities to explain differences in immune response, and to check whether they showed similar virulence in in vitro tests as in experimental intramammary in vivo infection. The main differences were observed in the enterotoxin gene cluster (egc) and the immune-evasion-cluster (IEC) genes. While isolate ST121 harboured all six egc cluster members (seg, sei, selm, seln, selo, selu), isolate ST96 lacked the egc cluster. Strain ST96 carried a phage integrase Sa3 (Sa3int), compatible with a phage integrated into the hlb gene (β-haemolysin-converting bacteriophages) with IEC type F, while isolate ST121 lacked IEC genes and the hlb gene was intact. Moreover, the in vitro tests confirmed a different virulence capacity between strains as ST121 showed greater cytotoxicity for erythrocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages than strain ST96. Differences were also found 7 days after experimental intramammary infection with 100 colony-forming units. The animals inoculated with strain ST121 developed more severe gross and histological mastitis, higher counts of macrophages in tissue and of all the cell populations in peripheral blood, and a significantly larger total number of bacteria than those infected by strain ST96.

In the era of renewable technologies and clean processes, carbon science must adapt to this new model of a green society. Carbon materials are often obtained from petroleum precursors through polluting processes that do not meet the requirements of sustainable and green chemistry. Biomass is considered the only renewable source for the production of carbon materials, as the carbon in biomass comes from the consumption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, resulting in zero net carbon dioxide emissions. In addition to being a green source of carbon materials, biomass has many advantages such as being a readily available, large and cheap feedstock, as well as the ability to create unique carbon-derived structures with well-developed porosity and heteroatom doping. All these positive aspects position biomass-derived carbon materials as attractive alternatives in multiple applications, from energy storage to electrocatalysis, via adsorption and biosensors, among others. This review focuses on the application of phenolic resins to the production of electrodes for energy storage and the slow but inexorable movement from petroleum-derived phenolic compounds to biosourced molecules (i.e., lignins, tannins, etc.) as precursors for these carbon materials. Important perspectives and challenges for the design of these biosourced electrodes are discussed.

En el siglo 21, la obesidad constituye un problema de salud pública al presentarse como una enfermedad metabólica adversa y prevalente, que al encontrarse en un ambiente toxico; en el que la comida es barata, sabrosa, ultra procesada y abundante; aumenta a un ritmo acelerado. Aproximadamente el 17% de los niños estadounidenses y 35% de los adultos son obesos y los gastos anuales atribuidos a la obesidad y cuidados relacionados superan los 190.000 millones de dólares, constituyendo así un problema para los sistemas de salud y los recursos destinados a estos, es por esto que la promoción y la prevención cobran importancia, al igual que los tratamientos integrales, en los que se tienen en cuenta todas las esferas del individuo y la naturaleza multifactorial de esta enfermedad, es por esto que el objetivo de la presente revisión es plantear una revisión de los mecanismos, fisiopatología y tratamientos que existen actualmente para el manejo integral de la obesidad, con la finalidad de establecer sus ventajas, desventajas y resaltar su importancia. Para la realización de este se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en bases de datos como WoS, Education-Research, Lilacs y Redalyc, mediante la selección de palabras clave como “obesidad”, “sobrepeso” “fisiopatología” “tratamiento”. Tras la identificación de los artículos de interés, se llevo a cabo una lectura critica para seleccionar los que mejor se correlacionaran con el objetivo de la revisión, delimitando así una muestra final.

Background About 40% of patients who have had COVID-19 still have symptoms three months later whereas a 10% may experience physical and/or psychological consequences two years later. Therefore, it is necessary to perform preventive interventions when patients are discharged from the hospital to decrease the aforementioned sequelae. The purpose of this pilot-controlled trial will be to determine the efficacy of a rehabilitation program on functional status and psychosocial factors for post-COVID-19 patients when it is delivered through a tele-care platform versus a booklet-based rehabilitation. Methods The estimated sample size will be of 50 participants who have been discharged after COVID-19 and have a level of fatigue equal or greater than 4 on the Fatigue Severity Scale. The primary outcome will be the severity of fatigue. Participants will be randomly allocated to an “asynchronous telerehabilitation group” or to a “booklet-based rehabilitation group”. Treatment in both groups will be the same and will consist of a combination of therapeutic exercise and an educative program. Treatment outcomes will be evaluated the last day of the intervention and at three- and six-months follow-up. Discussion The telerehabilitation intervention appears to be a viable and efficacy option in decreasing severe fatigue and other fitness variables such as strength and aerobic capacity, similar to other traditional rehabilitation formats such as through an explanatory booklet. Clinical trial registration This trial has been prospectively registered at clinialtrials.gov identifier: NCT04794036.

Many clinicians increasingly use dry needling in clinical practice. However, whether patients’ intake of antithrombotic drugs should be considered as a contraindication for dry needling has not been investigated to date. As far as we know, there are no publications in analyzing the intake of antiplatelet or anticoagulant agents in the context of dry needling techniques. A thorough analysis of existing medications and how they may impact various needling approaches may contribute to improved evidence-informed clinical practice. The primary purpose of this paper is to review the current knowledge of antithrombotic therapy in the context of dry needling. In addition, reviewing guidelines of other needling approaches, such as electromyography, acupuncture, botulinum toxin infiltration, and neck ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy, may provide specific insights relevant for dry needling. Based on published data, taking antithrombotic medication should not be considered an absolute contraindication for dry needling techniques. As long as specific dry needling and individual risks are properly considered, it does not change the risk and safety profile of dry needling. Under specific circumstances, the use of ultrasound guidance is recommended when available.

Desde mediados del siglo XX se observa una proliferación de singulares prácticas arquitectónicas basadas en la incorporación de sistemas de información mediática como ingrediente fundamental. En este contexto, la investigación busca revelar el hilo de Ariadna que nos conduce desde la figura de Herbert Bayer y su influyente esquema gráfico de Fundamentals of Exhibition Design (1939), hasta la presencia de la imagen en movimiento en el diseño arquitectónico más contemporáneo, entendida ésta, como materia y material conceptual. Concretamente mediante el análisis de tres líneas principales cuya relación se pretende desarrollar: por una parte, las aportaciones de Herbert Bayer en el campo visual y del diseño expositivo; por otra, las experiencias pioneras de hibridación entre arquitectura, teatro y video proyecciones de los años 50; y finalmente, el estudio de proyectos de fin de siglo en los que lo audiovisual constituye un soporte decisivo en la definición arquitectónica. Mediante la revisión bibliográfica como método de trabajo, apoyada de un análisis intencional de ejemplos, se procura justificar el vínculo entre los anteriores enfoques. Las conclusiones apuntan al linaje de la fusión de los mundos físico y virtual en la arquitectura, a través de la imagen en movimiento insertada en su diseño.

The common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) is nowadays the most demanded cephalopod species for human consumption. This species was also postulated for aquaculture diversification to supply its increasing demand in the market worldwide, which only relies on continuously declining field captures. In addition, they serve as model species for biomedical and behavioral studies. Body parts of marine species are usually removed before reaching the final consumer as by-products in order to improve preservation, reduce shipping weight, and increase product quality. These by-products have recently attracted increasing attention due to the discovery of several relevant bioactive compounds. Particularly, the common octopus ink has been described as having antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, among others. In this study, the advanced proteomics discipline was applied to generate a common octopus reference proteome to screen potential bioactive peptides from fishing discards and by-products such as ink. A shotgun proteomics approach by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) using an Orbitrap Elite instrument was used to create a reference dataset from octopus ink. A total of 1432 different peptides belonging to 361 non-redundant annotated proteins were identified. The final proteome compilation was investigated by integrated in silico studies, including gene ontology (GO) term enrichment, pathways, and network studies. Different immune functioning proteins involved in the innate immune system, such as ferritin, catalase, proteasome, Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, calreticulin, disulfide isomerase, heat shock protein, etc., were found in ink protein networks. Additionally, the potential of bioactive peptides from octopus ink was addressed. These bioactive peptides can exert beneficial health properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antihypertensive, and antitumoral properties and are therefore considered lead compounds for developing pharmacological, functional foods or nutraceuticals.

The purpose of this paper was to do a comparative evaluation of the skull of two species of lizards, the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) and the Green Iguana (Iguana iguana), by three-dimensional computed tomographic reconstruction. Images provided by this method give excellent anatomic detail of the skull. Therefore, essential differences in the configuration of the orbit and the lateral bones of the neurocranium were visualized in lateral and dorsal reconstructed images. The images obtained by tridimensional computed tomographic reconstruction can be a valuable diagnostic aid for the clinical evaluation of several head disturbances in lizards. Immersive journalism has been promoted as an alternative way of producing content that allows users to experience first-hand the events depicted in the news story. This mixed-method study examines how immersive journalism impacts the user experience of non-fictional narratives in news practices. A between-subject experiment (n = 104) was conducted to inspect the effects of system immersion on place illusion and co-presence. Using a 360-degree video news report produced by the Spanish newspaper El País as a stimulus, two viewing conditions were compared: magic window and 360 degree with a VR headset. The results show that VR technologies determine the effective potential of immersive journalism, namely the experience of place illusion and co-presence and that audiences do not actually explore the so-called whole picture, as a 90–180° movement for exploration prevailed.

Cilia are hair-like projections of the plasma membrane with an inner microtubule skeleton known as axoneme. Motile cilia and flagella beat to displace extracellular fluids, playing important roles in the airways and reproductive system. On the contrary, primary cilia function as cell-type-dependent sensory organelles, detecting chemical, mechanical, or optical signals from the extracellular environment. Cilia dysfunction is associated with genetic diseases called ciliopathies and with some types of cancer. Cilia have been recently identified in zebrafish gametogenesis as an important regulator of bouquet conformation and recombination. However, there is little information about the structure and functions of cilia in mammalian meiosis. Here we describe the presence of cilia in male mouse meiotic cells. These solitary cilia formed transiently in 20% of zygotene spermatocytes and reached considerable lengths (up to 15–23 µm). CEP164 and CETN3 localization studies indicated that these cilia emanate from the mother centriole prior to centrosome duplication. In addition, the study of telomeric TFR2 suggested that cilia are not directly related to the bouquet conformation during early male mouse meiosis. Instead, based on TEX14 labeling of intercellular bridges in spermatocyte cysts, we suggest that mouse meiotic cilia may have sensory roles affecting cyst function during prophase I.

Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) encompasses a family of metaheuristics inspired by the foraging behaviour of ants. Since the introduction of the first ACO algorithm, called Ant System (AS), several ACO variants have been proposed in the literature. Owing to their superior performance over other alternatives, the most popular ACO algorithms are Rank-based Ant System (ASRank), Max-Min Ant System (MMAS) and Ant Colony System (ACS). While ASRank shows a fast convergence to high-quality solutions, its performance is improved by other more widely used ACO variants such as MMAS and ACS, which are currently considered the state-of-the-art ACO algorithms for static combinatorial optimization problems. With the purpose of diversifying the search process and avoiding early convergence to a local optimal, the proposed approach extends ASRank with an originality reinforcement strategy of the top-ranked solutions and a pheromone smoothing mechanism that is triggered before the algorithm reaches stagnation. The approach is tested on several symmetric and asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem and Sequential Ordering Problem instances from TSPLIB benchmark. Our experimental results show that the proposed method achieves fast convergence to high-quality solutions and outperforms the current state-of-the-art ACO algorithms ASRank, MMAS and ACS, for most instances of the benchmark.

The spread of misinformation has become standard practice in today’s communicative scene. Both individual users and organizations disseminate false content for economic or political benefits. The response against these strategies has been to develop initiatives to both verify false information as well as prevent it from being spread. This article presents actions adopted by different actors to stop the spread of fake news. These actors are European institutions, national governments, the media, and major technology companies. Thus, this paper takes a comprehensive look at how misinformation is addressed in the European Union by studying reports and legislative texts and reviewing the growth of fact-checking initiatives. A disseminação da desinformação se tornou uma prática muito comum no atual cenário comunicativo. Utilizadores individuais e organizações disseminam conteúdo falso para obter benefício econômico ou político. A resposta contra essas estratégias tem sido o desenvolvimento de iniciativas cujo objetivo é tanto a verificação de informações falsas quanto a prevenção da sua disseminação. O objetivo deste artigo é mostrar as ações tomadas por diferentes atores com a capacidade de impedir a disseminação de notícias falsas: instituições europeias e governos nacionais, os media e as principais empresas tecnológicas. Assim, através do estudo de relatórios e textos legislativos ou a revisão do crescimento das iniciativas de fact-checking, os autores desenharão uma panorâmica sobre como a desinformação é abordada na União Europeia. La propagación de desinformación se ha convertido en una práctica muy frecuente en el escenario comunicativo actual. Usuarios individuales y organizaciones hacen uso de la difusión de contenidos falsos para obtener rendimiento económico o político. La reacción frente a este tipo de estrategias no se ha hecho esperar de forma pareciendo iniciativas dirigidas tanto a la verificación de las informaciones falsas como a evitar su publicación. El objetivo del presente artículo es dar cuenta de las acciones adoptadas por los diferentes actores con capacidad para frenar la difusión de fake news: las instituciones europeas y los gobiernos nacionales, el periodismo y las principales empresas tecnológicas. A partir del estudio de diferentes informes y textos legislativos, así como de las herramientas diseñadas por las empresas tecnológicas o la revisión del crecimiento de iniciativas de fact-checking se dibuja una panorámica general de cómo se intenta combatir la desinformación en el marco de la Unión Europea.

We have previously reported the expression of parathyroid hormone‐like hormone (PTHLH) in well‐differentiated, Schwannian stroma‐rich neuroblastic tumors. The aim of this study was to functionally assess the role of PTHLH and its receptor, PTH1R, in neuroblastoma. Stable knockdown of PTHLH and PTH1R was conducted in neuroblastoma cell lines to investigate the succeeding phenotype induced both in vitro and in vivo. Downregulation of PTHLH reduced MYCN expression and subsequently induced cell cycle arrest, senescence, and migration and invasion impairment in a MYCN‐amplified, TP53‐mutated neuroblastoma cell line. These phenotypes were associated with reduced tumorigenicity in a murine model. We also show that PTHLH expression is not under the control of the calcium‐sensing receptor in neuroblastoma. Conversely, its production is stimulated by epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Accordingly, irreversible EGFR inhibition with canertinib abolished PTHLH expression. The oncogenic role of PTHLH appeared to be a consequence of its intracrine function, as downregulation of its receptor, PTH1R, increased anchorage‐independent growth and induced a more undifferentiated, invasive phenotype. Respectively, high PTH1R mRNA expression was found in MYCN nonamplified primary tumors and also significantly associated with other prognostic factors of good outcome. This study provides the first evidence of the dual role of PTHLH in the behavior of neuroblastomas. Moreover, the identification of EGFR as a transcriptional regulator of PTHLH in neuroblastoma provides a novel therapeutic opportunity to promote a less aggressive tumor phenotype through irreversible inhibition of EGFR tyrosine kinase activity.

En este artículo se analiza cómo los medios de comunicación integran infografías en los reportajes en vídeo 360º. Para ello, se presenta un análisis de caso de cuatro piezas: Fukushima, vidas contaminadas (El País), The Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima (The New York Times), History 360° – Hamburg (ZDF) y From Waste to Taste (Al Jazeera). Mediante el análisis de contenido, se estudian sus principales rasgos formales, las opciones de interacción y los elementos gráficos de las infografías. Los resultados permiten comprobar la existencia de diferentes formas de integrar la infografía en los vídeos 360º, así como también evidencian que estas pueden cumplir diversas funciones dentro del relato. Sin embargo, se constata la ausencia de posibilidades de navegación interactiva, más allá de la visión 360º. En definitiva, se concluye que la “infografía inmersiva” se encuentra en una fase temprana de desarrollo en la que todavía no se ha explotado todo su potencial.

El Trabajo Social es una profesión de riesgo respecto al desarrollo del síndrome de burnout, ya que generalmente se ejerce prestando servicios a personas que atraviesan situaciones difíciles. Este síndrome genera graves consecuencias para el/la profesional y para su entorno personal y laboral. Por ello, resulta relevante analizar la magnitud del burnout e identificar los factores que pueden contribuir a su desarrollo y su prevención. El presente estudio tiene por objeto, en primer lugar, examinar la prevalencia del síndrome de burnout en una muestra de 32 trabajadoras sociales que ejercen su función en servicios sociales comunitarios de Tenerife. En segundo lugar, analizar la relación entre las tres dimensiones del síndrome y algunas variables que caracterizan el contexto laboral de estas profesionales. Los resultados indican que las participantes presentan niveles de burnout en la baja realización personal en el trabajo y niveles de riesgo de agotamiento emocional, mientras que presentan escasos indicadores de despersonalización. La mayor antigüedad laboral y la sensación de sobrecarga de trabajo se relacionan con la dimensión de agotamiento emocional; mientras que sentir que se recibe una buena valoración por parte del equipo de trabajo es un elemento protector frente a la baja realización personal en el trabajo.

Los altos estándares probatorios en el sistema penal acusatorio exigen calidad en la investigación y durante todas las etapas procesales, mucho más cuando se trate de acreditar una de las formas más graves de delincuencia trasnacional de la actualidad: la delincuencia organizada. Una de las más eficaces estrategias para evitar la impunidad de esta modalidad delincuencial se logra si el Fiscal acusador cuenta con el dominio de la teoría del delito, las etapas del proceso penal donde debe intervenir con la ética y los principios del sistema acusatorio oral y las técnicas para encontrar y desahogar los datos de prueba necesarios en las audiencias orales; solo así el juez sentenciará siempre que deje atrás cualquier duda razonable. Entender el estudio dogmático del tipo penal de delincuencia organizada es una estrategia básica para evitar la impunidad.

IntroductionCognitive deficits are a cause of functional disability in psychotic disorders. Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) might be applied to improve these deficits. We conducted a pilot study to explore whether thyroid hormones might predict the response to CRT in patients with recent-onset psychosis (ROP).MethodsTwenty-eight stable ROP outpatients (9 women) were randomized to receive computerized CRT (N=14) or treatment as usual (TAU) (N=14), over three months. Both cognitive and thyroid functions were assessed at the baseline and after those three months to all patients. A full cognitive battery (CANTAB) was administered before and after the treatment. Serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) were measured. FT4 concentrations were recoded into a dichotomic variable (FT4 group) based on the median of the sample (1.2 ng/dL). Data were analyzed on an intention-to-treat basis with linear mixed models. Afterwards, we offered CRT to all participants from the TAU group and seven enrolled CRT, reassessing them when finished. Secondary analyses were repeated in a sample of 14 participants who completed the CRT (either from the beginning or after the TAU period) and attended at least one third of the sessions.ResultsThe linear mixed models showed a significant time x CRT x FT4 group effect in two cognitive tasks dealing with executive functions and sustained attention (participants with higher FT4 concentrations worsened executive functions but improved sustained attention after CRT). In the secondary analysis including all patients assigned to CRT, higher FT4 concentrations were associated with a poorer response in verbal memory but a better response in spatial working memory.ConclusionsFree thyroxine concentrations moderate the response to a CRT in patients with early psychosis.

Background: Methylation of two CpG sites related to neuronal pentraxin II protein (NPTX2) and SH2 domain containing 5 protein (SH2D5), corresponding to two neuroplasticity genes, has been associated to headache chronification. We aimed to investigate the epigenetic modification of these two genes in chronic migraine (CM). Methods: We conducted a case–control study in which the DNA of 305 age- and sex-matched subjects classified according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders version beta (ICHD-III β) in CM (109), episodic migraine (EM; n = 98), and healthy controls (HC; 98) was analyzed. Real-time quantitative methylation-specific PCR was performed using specific methylation primers for two representative CpG sites within these genes. Results: We found no significant differences in methylation level between CM, EM, and HC in the first exon of the NPTX2 gene nor in the 5′ upstream region of the SH2D5 gene. Methylation level in the first exon of the NPTX2 showed a low correlation with age ( r = 0.266; p < 0.005). Conclusion: We did not find methylation level differences in analyzed regions related to NPTX2 and SH2D5 in our CM sample. Despite the potential relevance of neuroplasticity genes in headache chronification, we conclude that CM is a more heterogeneous clinical diagnosis than desired and that an epigenetic marker remains elusive.

La electrocoagulación es una opción en la remoción de contaminantes presentes en agua basada en el desgaste de electrodos para la formación in situ de un coagulante. En la eficiencia de este tipo de sistemas intervienen procesos fisicoquímicos, electroquímicos e hidráulicos. Diversos autores han estudiado esta tecnología desde los primeros dos enfoques, sin embargo, poco se conoce de la influencia de la hidráulica en la eficiencia del proceso. El presente trabajo se enfoca en el estudio de las pérdidas de carga totales en un reactor de electrocoagulación con flujo a presión y sección transversal anular simple y múltiple, donde esta última característica depende del arreglo de los electrodos. Se presenta el análisis de las pérdidas de carga por cortante y accesorios, las cuales se modelaron utilizando diferentes expresiones empíricas y se compararon con las mediciones realizadas a escala semipiloto. Como resultado del análisis se observó que la ecuación de Bahramir, Yovanovich y Culham (2006) asemeja las pérdidas reales en secciones anulares múltiples, mientras que la expresión propuesta por Davis describe mejor la sección anular simple. Estos resultados permitirán tener herramientas para diseñar reactores de electrocoagulación a escala real.

Background: Due to the global burden represented by chronic kidney disease (CKD), the World Health Organization encouraged the implementation of renal protection programmes (RPP) to affect its incidence through prevention and control measures. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of a Colombian RPP in terms of its effect on the stage progression of CKD and the need for renal replacement therapy (RRT). Methods: An analytical study that monitored 2 cohorts of patients diagnosed with CKD. The study compares the behaviour of clinical and renal impairment indicators from patients exposed to a RPP with that of patients following conventional treatment (CT). The population of both intervention groups was considered when determining the sample size. The incidence rate was calculated as well as patient survival (Kaplan–Meier). In addition, a multivariate analysis (Cox) was used to calculate the influence that exposure to the RPP had on the outcomes of the patients following the RPP and those following CT. Results: The patients exposed to the RPP took longer to advance to the next CKD stage and require RRT. The incidence rate for progression is higher for the patients following CT (0.050, CI 95%: 0.040–0.064) compared to those in the RPP (0.034, CI 95%: 0.030–0.039). The ratio of incidence rates was 1.480 (CI 95%: 1.21–1.90). The hazard of progression was lower for the RPP (HR: 0.855, CI 95%: 0.74–0.98), as was the hazard of requiring RRT (HR: 0.797, CI 95%: 0.606–1.049). Conclusions: The RPP is a secondary prevention strategy against CKD which has an effect on the stage progression of CKD and the need for RRT. Early patient detection has a positive effect on the outcomes studied.

Antecedentes: Debido a la carga global de la enfermedad renal crónica (ERC), la Organización Mundial de la Salud fomentó programas de protección renal (PPR) para impactar en su incidencia con medidas de prevención y control. Objetivos: Evaluar la efectividad de un PPR en Colombia sobre el progreso de estadio en ERC y el requerimiento de terapia de reemplazo renal (TRR). Métodos: Estudio analítico de seguimiento a 2 cohortes de pacientes con diagnóstico de ERC, que compara el comportamiento de indicadores clínicos y de deterioro renal entre pacientes expuestos a un PPR versus el tratamiento convencional (TC). Como tamaño de muestra se tuvo en cuenta el censo de la población de ambas aseguradoras. Se calculó la tasa de incidencia, la supervivencia (Kaplan Meier) y la influencia de la exposición al PPR sobre los desenlaces entre PPR y TC mediante un análisis multivariado (Cox). Resultados: Los pacientes expuestos al PPR se demoraron más en hacer el primer progreso de estadio y en requerir TRR. La tasa de incidencia para progreso es mayor en TC (0,050; IC 95%: 0,040-0,064) que en PPR (0,034: IC 95%: 0,030-0,039). Razón de tasas de incidencia: 1,480 (IC 95%: 1,21-1,90). El riesgo instantáneo de progreso fue menor en PPR (HR: 0,855; IC 95%: 0,74-0,98), al igual que el riesgo de requerir TRR (HR: 0,797; IC 95%: 0,606–1,049). Conclusiones: El PPR representa una estrategia de prevención secundaria en ERC que impacta en el progreso de estadio y requerimiento de TRR. La captación temprana de pacientes mejora dichos desenlaces.

This study aimed to describe the anatomic features of the normal head of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) identified by computed tomography. CT images were obtained in two dragons using a helical CT scanner. All sections were displayed with a bone and soft tissue windows setting. Head reconstructed, and maximum intensity projection images were obtained to enhance bony structures. After CT imaging, the images were compared with other studies and reptile anatomy textbooks to facilitate the interpretation of the CT images. Anatomic details of the head of the Komodo dragon were identified according to the CT density characteristics of the different organic tissues. This information is intended to be a useful initial anatomic reference in interpreting clinical CT imaging studies of the head and associated structures in live Komodo dragons.

The appearance of methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in several animal species (including rabbits) has set off alarms for their capacity to act as reservoirs for this bacterium. This is especially important in wild animals given its epidemiological implications. The objectives of this study were to identify and characterize S. aureus, specifically MRSA, strains in wild lagomorph high-density areas. Ten hares and 353 wild rabbits from 14 towns with a high rabbit density in the Valencian region (eastern Spanish coast) were sampled. Swabs from the nasal cavity, ears, perineum and lesions (when present) were taken for microbiological studies. The detection of different genes and antibiotic susceptibility studies were also carried out. Of all the animals, 41.3% were positive for S. aureus, of which 63.3% were MRSA. Ears were the anatomical location with more S. aureus and MRSA strains. The more frequently identified MLST type was ST1945 (97.1%, 136/140). The mecA gene was found only in one sample. The rest (n = 139) carried the mecC gene and were included in CC130, except one. Penicillin resistance was detected in 28 mec-negative isolates and, in one case, bacitracin resistance. mecA isolate presented resistance to enrofloxacin and tetracycline, and 10 mecC isolates also showed bacitracin resistance. No MRSA isolate was positive for genes chp, sea, tst and PVL. Two ST1945 isolates contained IEC type E (comprising genes scn and sak). mecA-isolate was positive for blaZ. Of the 28 MSSA strains showing resistance to penicillin, 22 carried the blaZ gene. These surprising results highlight the marked presence of MRSA strains in wild rabbits in high-density areas.

Nanocarbon materials present sp2-carbon domains skilled for electrochemical energy conversion or storage applications. In this work, we investigate graphene oxide nanofibers (GONFs) as a recent interesting carbon material class. This material combines the filamentous morphology of the starting carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and the interlayer spacing of graphene oxide, and exhibits a domain arrangement accessible for fast transport of electrons and ions. Reduced GONFs (RGONFs) present the partial removal of basal functional groups, resulting in higher mesoporosity, turbostratic stacking, and surface chemistry less restrictive for transport phenomena. Besides, the filament morphology minimizes the severe layer restacking shown in the reduction of conventional graphene oxide sheets. The influence of the reduction temperature (140–220 °C) on the electrochemical behaviour in aqueous 0.5 M H2SO4 of RGONFs is reported. RGONFs present an improved capacitance up to 16 times higher than GONFs, ascribed to the unique structure of RGONFs containing accessible turbostratic domains and restored electronic conductivity. Hydrothermal reduction at 140 °C results in the highest capacitance as evidenced by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements (up to 137 F·g−1). Higher temperatures lead to the removal of sulphur groups and slightly thicker graphite domains, and consequently a decrease of the capacitance.

There has recently been increased interest in the potential for formal and informal networks to aid interventions with biologic families in helping them achieve reunification in the context of the child protection system. When group support is provided to families, the creation of a network of social support seems to be a consequence. The article analyzes the conceptualization of social support in order to create social support networks and the benefits on the intervention with families in the framework of the child protection system through a systematic review. From a wide search 4348 documents, finally 14 articles were included in the reviews. Results show that social support is considered a process by which social resources are provided from formal (professional services and programs associated with those services in any off the protection, health of educational systems) and informal (extended family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances) networks, allowing the families to confront daily moments as well as in crisis situations. This social support is related to emotional, psychological, physical, instrumental, material and information support that allow families to face their difficulties. Formal and informal networks of child protection systems contribute to social support, resilience, consolidation of learning and the assistance of families to social intervention programs.
