Pneumonia is a leading cause of economic losses in the ruminant industry throughout the world. This study aimed to determine the relevance of species-specific procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) as clinical biomarkers in goat pneumonia. Forty-six confirmed cases of goat pneumonia and 10 apparently healthy goats were included in this investigation. Detailed clinical examination involved recording of vital parameters in diseased as well as in apparently healthy goats. The level of PCT and CRP was analyzed in serum samples collected on day 0 and day 5 from all the 46 diseased goats and on day 0 from 10 healthy goats. A significantly higher pre-treatment concentrations of PCT (229.88±38.79 pg/mL) and CRP (44.13±2.72 µg/mL) in diseased goats was observed when compared with the control group. Significant positive correlation was found between PCT and CRP. Both PCT and CRP revealed a high level of discrimination between diseased goats and healthy ones (AUC= 1.0). Significant inhibition was observed in the values of PCT and CRP 5 days post-treatment in goats treated with two different antimicrobial drugs. Moreover, the obtained data showed a high degree of accuracy for both PCT and CRP in predicting the therapeutic response of infected goats at the selected thresholds (AUC = 1.0 and 1.0, respectively). Positive correlation between PCT and CRP with body temperature and heart rate was recorded. Measurement of PCT and CRP with clinical examination might be useful in assessing severity of goat pneumonia.

Globally, escalating soil salinization poses significant abiotic stress, disproportionately impacting crops like chickpea (Cicer arientinum L.). This legume exhibits high sensitivity to salinity, which disrupts various physiological and metabolic processes, ultimately hindering growth and productivity. AMF (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus) reduces salt’s detrimental effects on plants’ growth by bolstering the plant’s antioxidant defense system, effectively reducing the damage caused by oxidative stress. In this study, the impact of AMF on salinity stress alleviation in chickpea was investigated in pot-grown experiments. Rhizophagus fasciculatus was used to inoculate the seeds of three different chickpea varieties (HC-3, CSG-8962, and C-235), and the physiological and biochemical changes of the AMF-inoculated and non-inoculated chickpea plants were studied. When exposed to salinity stress, the plants exhibited decreased leaf relative water content (RWC %) (21.13–31.30%), increased leaf relative stress injury, decreased chlorophyll content (45.22–58.24%), photochemical quantum yield, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance as compared to the control plants, but opposite results were observed in AMF colonized plants. A 9.16% to 14.79% increase in chlorophyll content was reported after AMF colonization. The activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POX) were increased by salt stress. They were further enhanced by AMF inoculation SOD activity by 20.3% to 23.3%, CAT activity by 65.7% to 78.7%, and POX activity by 32.7% to 39.3%. The findings clearly show that AMF Rhizophagus fasciculatus, via enhancing RWC, photosynthetic parameters, and antioxidant enzymes, can mitigate salinity stress in chickpeas.

The changing global climate brings a gradual yet constant and adverse shift in crop production. Grain crop plants, particularly cereals and legumes, respond varyingly to adverse climate, including reduction in grain yield and changes to their nutrient densities. An understanding of specific changes to crop systems under differing climatic conditions can help in planning diets to meet human nutrient sufficiency. Grain protein content is also affected by adverse environmental factors. Deficits in protein yield, linked to changes in grain or seed protein and antinutrient concentrations, have been reported in major food crops when exposed to elevated carbon dioxide, high temperature, drought, and humidity. These changes, in addition to affecting the quantity of indispensable or essential amino acids (IAA), also impact their bioavailability. Therefore, it is important to assess consequences of climate change on grain protein quality. An important tool to measure grain protein quality, is measuring its digestibility at the level of the ileum and its IAA concentration, linked to a metric called the Digestible IAA Score (DIAAS). A minimally invasive technique called the dual isotope tracer technique, which measures IAA digestibility after simultaneous administration of two different intrinsically labelled protein sources, one a test protein (2H/15N) and one a reference protein (13C) of predetermined digestibility, has been used in evaluation of grain protein IAA digestibility, and promises more in the evaluation of changes based on climate. This review discusses climate induced changes to grain protein quality through the prism of IAA digestibility, using the dual isotope tracer technique.

Abstract Chhurpe is a naturally fermented traditional dairy food of high altitude Western Himalayan region. They are generally prepared from cow or yak milk and are consumed during harsh winters. The present study was conducted to characterize the different Chhurpe samples traditionally prepared by the ethnic groups utilizing milk from different animal breeds such as cow, yak, Zomo (cow × yak), and Germo (Zomo × yak). Nutritional characterization revealed that 100 g of Chhurpe could completely meet the dietary protein requirements of children and adults with high concentrations of methionine and lysine. Tryptophan and valine were the limiting amino acids among all the Chhurpe samples. Palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids were the predominant fatty acids. The Chhurpe samples were a rich source of micronutrients such as calcium, iron, and zinc meeting above 70% of recommended dietary allowances (RDA) among children (3–10 years) and up to 20% RDA for adults. Culture-independent metagenomic analysis revealed that lactic acid bacteria were the predominant group, consisting of genera such as Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Lactococcus, and Streptococcus followed by acetic acid bacteria, mainly Acetobacter. At the species level, Lactobacillus delbrueckii was the abundant strain among all the Chhurpe samples. Species diversity was significantly higher in Chhurpe prepared from Zomo milk. Probiotic bacterial strains such as Lactobacillus helveticus, L. delbrueckii, L. brevis, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides were identified in the Zomo Chhurpe indicating their superior quality. The present study was an attempt to popularize Chhurpe and promote its wider consumption by highlighting its nutritional properties.

Abstract Objectives: To assess the impact of nutritional and multiple-micronutrient supplementation to lactating mothers on the micronutrient status of mother–infant dyad at 6 months of age postnatally. Design: This study was a trial that aimed to investigate the impact of maternal nutritional supplementation on infant growth. A secondary objective was to assess the effect on the micronutrient status of mother–infant pairs. The intervention group mothers received snacks with 600 kcal energy, 20 g protein and daily micronutrient tablets. Setting: Blood samples were collected from both mothers and infants at 6 months. Participants: The participants in this study were mother–infant pairs. The micronutrient status of these pairs was assessed through blood samples, focusing on vitamins A, D, B12, ferritin, Zn and folate. Results: Micronutrient analysis of serum samples from 600 mother–infant pairs showed that mothers in the intervention group had higher levels of serum ferritin (mean difference (MD) 14·7 ng/ml), retinol (MD 0·6 μmol/l), folate (MD 3·3 ng/ml) and vitamin D (1·03 ng/ml) at 6 months postpartum. Additionally, the supplementation was associated with a higher mean ± sd of serum ferritin (MD 8·9 ng/ml) and vitamin A (MD 0·2 μmol/l) levels in infants at 6 months. Conclusions: The study found that supplementing maternal nutrition with additional dietary and micronutrient intakes during lactation improved maternal micronutrient status and slightly increased ferritin and vitamin A levels in infants at 6 months. The findings highlight the importance of nutritional interventions for improving the micronutrient health of mother–infant pairs, with significant public health implications. The experiment aimed to investigate the impact of foliar application of spermidine on the physiological and reproductive aspects of chickpea genotypes subjected to salt stress, with a focus on its consequences for seed quality. The study involved treating chickpea genotypes (CSG 8962, HC 3, HC 5, RSG 931) with 4 and 8 dSm ^−1 Cl ^− dominate salinity during the seedling stage, and application of 0.5 and 1.0 mM spermidine at the flowering stage. Result revealed that salinity significantly reduced chlorophyll and membrane stability index by approximately 46.97% and 23.19%, respectively. Concurrently, pollen germination and viability decreased about 14.14% and 22.24%, leading to a substantial decline in seed protein content (37.70%) at 8 dSm ^−1 salinity. While there was an increase in antioxidant activity (45.83%), phenol content decreased in response to salinity stress. Foliar application of spermidine (0.5 and 1.0 mM) proved to be a promising intervention, enhancing chlorophyll stability and phenol content by approximately 24.35% and 36.05%, respectively, at 8 dSm ^−1 salinity. This improvement is associated with a notable 20.01% increase in pollen viability, resulting in a subsequent rise in protein content by about 20.73% at 1.0 mM spermidine. Additionally, the application of spermidine mitigated Na ^+ ion accumulation in chickpea seeds. The findings underscore the varying performance of chickpea genotypes under salinity stress, with CSG 8962 and RSG 931 exhibiting poorer outcomes compared to other genotypes. Notably, the positive impact of spermidine was more pronounced, especially with the use of 1.0 mM spermidine, which demonstrated a more significant positive effect in salt-sensitive chickpea genotypes. These results emphasize the potential of spermidine as a strategic tool in alleviating the adverse effects of salinity on chickpea crops, offering valuable insights for the development of sustainable practices to enhance chickpea resilience and seed quality under challenging environmental conditions.

Abstract The symbiotic relationship between insects and gut microbes contributes to their fitness by serving immense range of functions viz. nutrition and digestion, detoxification, communication and reproduction etc. However, this relationship between insect and gut microbes varies from mutualistic to pathogenic. Gut microbes become pathogenic when the healthy normal microbial composition is perturbed leading to the death of insect host. Spodoptera litura (Fab.) is a polyphagous pest that causes significant damage to many agricultural crops. The management of this pest primarily depends upon chemical insecticides which have resulted in development of resistance. Thus in search for alternative strategies, culturable gut bacteria isolated from S. litura were screened for insecticidal potential. Among these Serratia marcescens and Enterococcus mundtii induced higher larval mortality in S. litura. The mortality rate increased from 32 to 58% due to S. marcescens at concentrations ranging from 2.6 × 108 to 5.2 × 109 cfu/ml and 26 to 52% in case of E. mundtii due to increase in concentration from 4.6 × 108 to 6.1 × 109 cfu/ml. Both the bacteria negatively affected the development, nutritional physiology and reproductive potential of insect. The results indicated a change in gut microbial composition as well as damage to the gut epithelial membrane. Invasion of gut bacteria into the haemocoel led to septicaemia and ultimately death of host insect. In conclusion both these gut bacteria may serve as potential biocontrol agents against S. litura.

Abstract Background Spodoptera litura (Fab.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) commonly known as tobacco caterpillar is a polyphagous pest that causes significant damage to many agricultural crops. The extensive use of chemical insecticides against S. litura has resulted in development of resistance. In order to find potential biocontrol agents, gut microbes were investigated for insecticidal potential. These microbes live in a diverse relationship with insects that may vary from beneficial to pathogenic. Results Enterococcus casseliflavus, Enterococcus mundtii, Serratia marcescens, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas paralactis and Pantoea brenneri were isolated from adults of S. litura. Screening of these microbial isolates for insecticidal potential against S. litura showed higher larval mortality due to K. pneumoniae and P. paralactis. These bacteria also negatively affected the development of insect along with significant decline in relative growth and consumption rate as well as efficiency of conversion of ingested and digested food of insect. The bacteria significantly decreased the reproductive potential of insect. Perturbations in the composition of gut microbiome and damage to gut epithelium were also observed that might be associated with decreased survival of this insect. Conclusions Our study reveals the toxic effects of K. pneumoniae and P. paralactis on biology of S. litura. These bacteria may be used as potential candidates for developing ecofriendly strategies to manage this insect pest.

The present study aimed to assess the changes in metabolite after adaptation of Kankrej breed of cattle from draught to milch purpose. The result showed the resistance power of alteration in metabolic values even after adaptation. Metabolic parameters can be measured to evaluate the health status of individual animal in herd by using mini compton metabolic profile test. Feeding management can be adjusted as per the data of metabolic profile to avoid incidence of metabolic diseases. Indigenous cattle breed is tough enough which resist the alteration in different metabolic parameters.

Abstract Venous plasma metabolomics is a potent and highly sensitive tool for identifying and measuring metabolites of interest in human health and disease. Accurate and reproducible insights from such metabolomic studies require extreme care in removing preanalytical confounders; one of these is the duration of tourniquet application when drawing the venous blood sample. Using an untargeted plasma metabolomics approach, we evaluated the effect of varying durations of tourniquet application on the variability in plasma metabolite concentrations in five healthy female subjects. Tourniquet application introduced appreciable variation in the metabolite abundances: 73% of the identified metabolites had higher temporal variation compared to interindividual variation [Intra-Class Correlation (ICC) > 0.50]. As such, we recommend tourniquet application for minimal duration and to wait for 5 min with the needle in situ after removing the tourniquet, to reduce hemostasis-induced variability and false flags in interpretation.

The yield of the crop is a complex function of a number of dependent traits, which makes yield prediction a statistically difficult task. A number of work on yield prediction using morphological characters already exists in the literature. Most of the work used statistical techniques such as linear regression and crop yield models, which assume a linear relationship between yield and the morphological traits; in actual practice, such a linear relationship is seldom achieved. With the advancement in the field of machine learning techniques, these methods can provide a viable alternative for dealing with nonlinear relationships for yield prediction. Globally, apples are the most consumed fruit. In this paper, attempts have been made to predict the yield of the apple crop using morphological traits. PCA was used for selection of the significant variables. These variables were later used as input variables in the ANN model with different hidden layers for predicting crop yield. The predictive performance of the model was evaluated using standard statistical tests. Sensitivity analysis was performed to find out the individual effects of each character on the apple yield. The study contributes to a better understanding of the complex relationships between crop yield and morphological traits.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an OIE notifiable, transboundary pox viral disease of livestock. LSD is an emerging disease severely affecting livestock economics. The zoonotic potential of the LSD virus has not been extensively studied and reported. In approximately 90 years, the virus dispersed to numerous world locations after its first emergence in Zambia. LSD virus emergence in South Asia prevailed among livestock (cattle and water buffalo) owners due to economic/financial losses. The estimate of the economic impact of LSD in the southern, eastern and southeastern countries suggested direct losses of livestock and production of approximately USD 1.45 billion. In 2019, nearly the same time, the disease was reported for the first time from many bordering countries, such as India, Nepal, China, and Bangladesh. In 2020, the LSD was also recorded in Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Southeast China. In 2021, it further spread to new countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia. Cattle affected with LSD show a characteristic nodular lesion or skin lump over the whole body and may occasionally be associated with systemic signs. Hematophagous arthropod-borne mechanical transmission is considered primary and the most common route; however, other transmission routes related to illegal animal trade have played a role in the emergence of LSD in countries otherwise/earlier free from it. Among serological diagnostic tests, OIE recommends virus neutralization as the standard gold test. Diagnosis in LSD-free countries requires virus isolation and further sequencing of the isolate. Control of LSD is possible by most of the measures applied for rapidly transmitting viral infection, including vaccination. LSD virus-specific vaccines are considered suitable to confer protection to cattle and buffalo over heterologous vaccines. In countries such as India, the lack of a specific policy for LSD at the time of the first onset of this disease, the high density of susceptible unvaccinated populations, unawareness among farmers, veterinarians and prevailing laws of no slaughter of cattle created a favourable situation of its spread to many states. Amid COVID-19, the whole world is in turmoil; the emergence of diseases such as LSD is further lowering the economy, and hence must be reviewed to save and sustain the backbone of the developing country's economy in Southeast Asia.

Introduction We describe the rationale and broad study design of the Indian Diabetes and Metabolic Health (InDiMeT) study, a new prospective, observational study incorporating extensive epigenetic (DNA methylation) and lipidomic signatures to examine their association with the dysregulation of adipose de novo lipogenesis (DNL) in South Asian Indians. The InDiMeT study aims to use a case–control design to identify genetic and modifiable-environmental-lifestyle associated determinants of (1) epigenomic (DNA methylome) dysregulation of adipose DNL in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) adipose tissue, (2) identify correlates of epigenomic (DNA methylome) dysregulation of adipose DNL in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from T2DM subjects and (3) elucidate plasma lipidomic correlates of adipose DNL in T2DM that can be used as biomarkers of adipose tissue dysfunction.Methods and analysis The InDiMeT study will involve recruitment of 176 normoglycaemic and T2DM individuals who will be undergoing laparoscopic surgery for clinical conditions. Extensive phenotyping of the subjects will be conducted and DNA methylome and lipidomic measurements will be made. The adipose DNL pathway genes are likely to be hypermethylated in patients with T2DM with corresponding reduction of gene expression. Correlates of epigenomic (DNA methylome) dysregulation of adipose DNL pathway in PBMCs and their adipose and plasma lipidomic signatures in T2DM subjects could act as early markers of development of T2DM.Ethics and dissemination For the InDiMeT study, ethical approval for addressing the specific aims has been obtained from the Institutional Ethics Committee, St John’s Medical College and Hospital, St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore. Findings from this study will be disseminated through scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, research conferences and via presentations to stakeholders, patients, clinicians, public and policymakers through appropriate channels.

Gut microbiota has been implicated as a modifier of childhood growth. Here, 16S rRNA sequencing-based fecal microbiota profiles of 18-24 month old Indian children were evaluated (n = 41), in relation to their anthropometric parameters, intestinal permeability, body composition and total energy expenditure. Pathway analyses were conducted to assess microbial functions related to stunting, underweight and wasting. The fecal microbiota was enriched in Prevotella 9, Bifidobacterium and Escherichia-Shigella. Weight, weight-for-age Z-scores (WAZ) and weight-for-length Z-scores (WLZ), along with age, acted as covariates of microbiota variation specifically in boys (n = 23). Bifidobacterium longum subsp longum abundance was positively associated with WAZ while Bifidobacterium bifidum and Bifidobacterium breve abundances were negatively associated with age. The lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis pathway was upregulated in stunted (n = 16) and wasted (n = 8) children. Findings from this study indicate that child sex may be a critical modifier of the role of gut microbiota on childhood growth.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) producing E. coli seems to be emerging in veterinary science impacting major threat to public health due to resistance to golden age antibiotics. In this study a total of 109 samples (42 faecal and 67 mastitis milk) of bovines were collected from different regions of North Gujarat. The samples were cultured and identified by standard procedures. The screening for ESBLs production was performed by using Cefotaxime and Cefotaxime+Clavulanate (Combination disc screening method). A total of 71 E. coli isolates were recovered from 109 samples processed, out of which thirty (42.25%) isolates (17 from milk and 13 from faecal) were positive for ESBLs showing multiple resistance to the antibiotics used. The ESBL confirmed isolates were further processed for detection of blaCTX-M, blaTEM, and blaSHV genes. Major gene detected was blaTEM in 17 (23.94%) E. coli isolates. Antibiotic resistance pattern of E. coli isolates was studied against eleven commonly used antimicrobial drugs in the northern region of Gujarat. The results recorded resistance tofollowing antibiotics: tetracycline (100%), ampicillin/sulbactum (83.10%), amoxiclav and gentamicin (83.10%), chloramphenicol (57.74%), ceftriaxone (66.19%), cefoperazone (66.19%), ciprofloxacin (74.65%), amikacin (57.74%), enrofloxacin (74.65%) and, levofloxacin (74.65%).

Background. Indians have a poor protein intake in terms of quantity as well as quality because of their predominantly cereal-based diet. However, there is limited information on circulatory amino acid levels in healthy Indians. Herein, we evaluated the acute effect of a protein supplement on the plasma levels of essential amino acids (EAAs) in healthy Indian adults, using targeted EAA analysis. Methods. In this double-blind, randomized, crossover study, 20 healthy Indian adults were randomized to receive the test protein supplement (treatment arm, n = 10) or placebo (control arm, n = 10) with milk, after overnight fasting. After 7 days, the participants returned for the crossover treatment. Blood samples were collected at baseline and at 60 and 120 min after protein/placebo consumption. Trace elements, though required in minute quantities (less than 100 mg/kg dry matter), are essential for maintaining health andimmunity. They are involved in growth, production and reproduction. Trace elements act as cofactors of enzymes which areimportant to the immunity of animal. Superoxide dismutase , glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, thioredoxinreductase, ceruloplasmin and catalase are important enzymes that have trace elements as cofactors. These enzymes act asantioxidants and prevent oxidative stress by neutralizing oxidants produced under different stresses. Besides, trace elementscontribute to general health of animal thereby enhancing disease resistance. Trace elements are important for properfunctioning of a number of enzymes and proteins which are involved in many physiological, biochemical and metabolicprocesses that contribute to growth and production. Overall, trace elements improve immune competence and productiveperformance.

A variety of nutritional deficiencies, dietary protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and trace elements are known to cause cardiac disease in various species. Nutritional management of dogs with cardiac problems can be handling with providing adequate calories, protein and modulating cytokine production to manage the possible cause of decreased appetite of the side effects of medications. Owners should be aware that dietary supplements are not regulated in the same way as drugs. They do not require proof of safety, efficacy, or quality control before they can be sold. Therefore, careful selection of type, dose, and brand is important to avoid toxicities or complete lack of efficacy. [Vet World 2009; 2(12.000): 482-485]

Ketoprofen is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for its anti-inflammatory,analgesic and antipyretic properties in Veterinary Medicine. The present study was planned to assess safety of ketoprofen (3 mg.kg-1) after repeated intravenous administration at 24 hours interval for five days in six crossbred cow calves (6-12 months age and weighing between 60-122 kg). Ketoprofen in calves was found safe based on evaluation of haematological (Hb, PCV, TLC and DLC), blood biochemical (AKP, ACP, AST, ALT, LDH, Total bilirubin, Serum Creatinine, BUN, Serum total protein, Serum albumin and Blood glucose) parameters. Cardiac diseases in canines are an extensively studied phenomenon all over the world but meagre information has been reported in India. Certain problems, including historical, physical, and laboratory abnormalities, are associated with cardiovascular or pulmonary disease. In India however, the recognition of canine cardiac diseases has been delayed, and ignored on account of lack of awareness and knowledge by the owner and inadequate diagnostic facility to a field veterinarian. Considering the above facts, the present study was undertaken in Gujarat to survey the prevalence of common cardiac diseases in hospital population of dogs along with the clinical symptoms which often goes undetected due to lack of proper diagnostic techniques to be implied and the most forms of heart disease may be present for many years before any evidence of failure develops. In the present study most of the clinical cases of cardiac diseases were presented with a history of nocturnal coughing (seven cases; 2.55%), exercise intolerance (five cases; 1.82%), partial or complete anorexia (five cases; 1.82%), swelling in abdominal area (four cases; 1.45%), dullness and depression (two cases; 0.72%), cachexia and hepatojugular pulsation (one case each; 0.36% each) at times.
