Abstract

Plastic photovoltaic devices based on solution processed conjugated polymers have attracted much attention as potential candidates for the next generation of solar cells. Polymer solar cells based on blends of conjugated polymer donors and molecular acceptors such as PCBM (often referred to as bulk heterojunction solar cells) are attracting a great deal of interest. These systems have potential technological value due to their ease of fabrication and their relatively low production costs. This enabled devices to be produced that have solar power conversion efficiencies approaching 9%. The purpose of this research project is to develop new and more efficient materials for application in this area.

20. Synthesis of bent-shaped azobenzene main-chain polymers for photo-switching properties.

Abstract

This work presents the synthesis of the new bent-core polymers with siloxane units connected to the one side of azobenzene units. The structure of siloxane-based azobenzene bent-core polymers, 7a–c, was elucidated by spectral analysis (nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy). The results of gel permeation chromatography suggested that all polymers (7a–c) showed polydisperse (polydispersity index >1). Besides, the extent of polymerization in the following order: 7a > 7b > 7c, where the degree of polymerization values were 7, 8 and 11, respectively. Polarizing optical microscopy revealed that the bent-core liquid crystal (BCLC) monomers, 6a and 6b, displayed the smectic A phase, whereas BCLC monomer 6c and all siloxane-based main-chain polymers (MCPs) (7a–c) were crystalline in nature. The result of ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy demonstrated that all MCPs (7a–c) exhibited strong photoisomerization behavior in solution. All polymers (7a–c) showed trans to cis isomerization in about 200 s, whereas the reverse process required much longer times ranging from 400 to 520 min in solution. The photo-switching study on azobenzene containing polymers stated that the effect of alkyl chain length and type of central core units on trans to cis isomerization were negligible. In contrast, both parameters influence the cis to trans process in which the photo-switching behavior of these materials may be primarily suitably exploited in the field of photo-induced phenomenon. 29. Bioactive compounds derived from marine source: a potential immunotherapy treatment

Abstract

Immunotherapy using checkpoint inhibitors blocks the checkpoint proteins (programmed cell death receptor-1; PD-1) from binding with their corresponding ligands (programmed cell death receptor ligand-1; PD-L1) to regulate cell signaling pathways. The marine environment holds a huge source of small molecules that are understudied which can be developed as an inhibitor. Hence, this study investigated the inhibitory effect of 19 algae-derived small molecules against PD-L1 by using molecular docking, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination (ADME) properties and molecular dynamics simulations (MDS). The molecular docking revealed that the binding energy of the six best compounds ranges from −11.1 to −9.1 kcal/mol. Fucoxanthinol, in particular, has the strongest binding energy at −11.1 kcal/mol with three hydrogen bonds (ASN:63A, GLN:66A, and ASP:122A). Meanwhile, the MDS demonstrated that the ligands were strongly bound to the protein, indicating the stability of the complexes. Abstract

A silica-coated magnetically separable Schiff-base palladium nanocatalyst was developed. Amorphous silica was used to encapsulate the magnetic Fe3O4 and an organic amine functionality was added to the silica surface. The amino group was treated with 1, 10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxaldehyde to produce a Schiff-base, which was then treated with palladium to produce the silica coated magnetic Schiff-base palladium nanocatalyst. The palladium nanocatalyst was fully characterized using several spectroscopic techniques. The HR-SEM image of silica coated Fe3O4 revealed a globular shape with a diameter of 145 nm, along with this the average palladium nanoparticle size was 3.5 ± 0.6 nm. The successful functionalization and the appearances of the palladium species as a magnetic catalyst was confirmed by FT-IR and XRD analysis. The palladium nanocatalyst was successfully applied for the construction of Csingle bondC bonds via Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. With a variety of organoboronic acids, the catalyst displayed great performance for electron-poor and electron-rich aryl halides, resulting in excellent yields of the corresponding cross-coupling products. The magnetic catalyst was retrieved from the reaction vial using an external strong magnet, and it was reused seven times without a significant drop in the production of the corresponding biaryl product. yes
