This project has five specific objectives: To provide traceability for dynamic pressure and temperature through development of measurement standards and validated calibration procedures; To quantify the effects of influencing quantities on the response of dynamic pressure and temperature sensors, in order to determine the appropriate calibration procedures and measurement uncertainties for industrial measurements; To develop new measurement methods and sensors for measuring dynamic pressure and temperature in demanding industrial applications, and to demonstrate the improved accuracy and reliability obtained with those; To validate all of the methods and sensors developed in this project through demonstrations in selected industrial applications; and To ensure by close engagement with industry, that the developed calibration and measurement techniques and technology are adopted by them. The challenge is that in many industrial applications pressure and temperature measurements are performed under dynamically changing conditions. The aim of this project is to improve the accuracy and reliability of pressure and temperature measurements in these challenging conditions. A European joint research project named Development of measurement and calibration techniques for dynamic pressures and temperatures (shortname DynPT) started in the summer 2018.

Colloque avec actes et comité de lecture. Internationale.; International audience; Cavitation is a well-known physical phenomenon occurring in various technical applications. Its coupling with the aeration, is a recent technique, which allows the control of the overall effect of the cavitation. The aeration is achieved by introducing air bubbles into the flow. In order to reveal and explore the behaviour of air in the vicinity of the cavitation regions, the paper is oriented towards the physics of the colliding vapour phase in the presence of cavitation. By penalizing the strain rate tensor in the Homogeneous Equilibrium Model, a two-way cavitation-aeration coupling is achieved. The contact-handling algorithm is based on the projections of the velocity fields of the injected bubbles over the velocity field of the fluid flow. At each time step the gradient of the distance between the bubbles, is kept non-negative, as a guarantee of the physical non overlapping. The bubbles are considered as non-deformable. The differential equations system is composed of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, implemented with the Homogeneous Equilibrium Model. A high-order Finite Volume solver based on Moving Least Squares approximations is used. The code uses a SLAU-type Riemann solver for the accurate calculation of the low Mach numbers. The computational domain is a symmetrical 2D venturi nozzle, with 18/ 8 convergent/divergent angles respectively.

Internationale.; International audience; Le travail présenté ici concerne l'étude expérimentale des modifications d'une couche limite sur un profil NACA symétrique d'épaisseur relative 15 % à Reynolds 0,5 106, en présence d'une cavité de vapeur stable se développant sur l'extrados du profil près du bord d'attaque, pour un angle d'incidence de 10°. Une comparaison systématique des grandeurs intégrales et des grandeurs moyennes et fluctuantes a été réalisée avec et sans poche de cavitation afin de mettre en évidence les mécanismes d'interaction entre la phase dispersée et la phase liquide. Les résultats obtenus montrent que la présence de la poche contribue à un épaississement de la couche limite et à une augmentation de la vitesse en très proche paroi. On observe une stabilisation de la couche limite turbulente sur le profil et un retard au décollement. L'analyse des moments d'ordre supérieur montre un décalage des maxima de production d'énergie cinétique et de cisaillement vers des distances à la paroi plus grande, une amélioration du mélange turbulent dans la zone logarithmique de la couche limite et a permis de comprendre les mécanismes de transfert et d'échange en présence de la poche.

Apoptosis is a particular type of programmed cell death which commonly occurs in the developing embryo, in normal healthy adult tissues and in many pathological settings. In contrast to necrosis, apoptosis is not a passive phenomenon but is gene-directed, usually requiring ongoing protein synthesis. The dying cell is characterised by having a raised level of cytosolic Ca2+; this activates a non-lysosomal Ca(2+)- and Mg(2+)-dependent endonuclease which digests the chromatin into oligonucleosome length fragments. The dying cell may or may not fragment into a number of apoptotic bodies, but in all cases the cell contents are bounded by a membrane which prevents the spillage of harmful substances such as DNA. Apoptotic cells are eliminated through phagocytosis by neighbouring cells and macrophages, and cell surface changes on apoptotic cells aid their recognition and engulfment by the phagocytosing cells. Extrinsic signals can both stimulate and inhibit apoptosis, and even direct damage to the cell can activate the process. Apoptosis is widely involved in organ formation in the embryo, and its occurrence in response to noxious stimuli such as cytotoxic drugs, irradiation and hyperthermia may be viewed as an altruistic suicide. Apoptosis provides a safe disposal mechanism for neutrophils at inflamed sites, and within the immune system it is considered responsible for eliminating self-reactive T-cell clones and for the affinity maturation of antibody producing cells. A failure to undergo apoptosis has been invoked in the pathogenesis of low-grade follicular lymphoma, and the triggering of apoptosis with monoclonal antibodies specifically in tumour cells has been achieved in one or two cases.

There are many avenues where molecular biology is important in studying the gut, and here we explore methods for defining expression of a new gene family in the gut. We have defined the pattern of trefoil peptide gene expression in the ulceration-associated cell lineage (UACL) and in the nearby mucosa in Crohn's disease. In the UACL, human spasmolytic polypeptide mRNA and peptide are expressed in the acinar and proximal duct cells, whereas pS2 mRNA and peptide are found in the distal duct cells and in the surface cells. In adjacent mucosa, pS2 mRNA and protein are expressed ectopically by goblet cells. Ultrastructural immunolocalisation showed the pS2 to be co-packaged in the mucous cell granules. pS2 peptide was demonstrated in local neuroendocrine cells and was also co-packaged with the neuroendocrine granules. The crypts associated with the UACL also showed marked neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia. We have also cloned the newest trefoil peptide intestinal trefoil factor from human and rat intestinal mucosa and shown its co-expression with mucus by normal intestinal goblet cells. The co-packaging of the same secretory protein in both mucous and neuroendocrine granules, which have different functions, is unusual and indicates an important role for pS2 in the secretory process itself or as a ligand delivered to its receptor via multiple routes. We conclude that the trefoil peptides are widely distributed in the intestine in inflammatory bowel disease and are of considerable potential functional importance.
