Owing to its well‐preserved and long‐lasting archaeological record, the necropolis of Petit‐Chasseur in the Upper Rhône Valley (3100–1600 BC) showcases the economic, social, and ideological changes of 3rd and 2nd millennium BC Europe excellently. An in‐depth investigation of pottery artifacts was carried out using multiple spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Nine types of ceramic fabrics were identified based on the variety of temper and natural inclusions; however, the mineralogy and phase chemistry of the ceramic matrix showed the paste to be primarily illitic or muscovitic, irrespective of the inclusion type. Muscovitic clays were likely procured from the fluvioglacial, glaciolacustrine, colluvial, and till sediment abundantly available at higher altitudes of the Upper Rhône Valley, whereas illitic clays were acquired from pedogenized loess horizons or the Rhône River alluvium. Different raw material choices and paste preparation practices suggest distinct ceramic traditions that likely existed in the valley during the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC. This, along with the hypothesized provenance of the raw material, is likely in favor of various prehistoric communities gathering at the megalithic necropolis from close and distant parts of the valley using the Petit‐Chasseur site as a place of assembly.

Le Val d'Hérens, ne compte ni les glaciers les plus longs, ni les sommets les plus hauts du Valais. Mais il offre de par ses paysages, glaciers et rivières, et aussi par sa flore et sa faune d'extraordinaires conditions d'observer l'organisation, le fonctionnement et le changement des paysages. Il déroule devant nous les faits de façon didactique et permet d'étudier les phénomènes et l'histoire glaciaire récente dans des conditions idéales. Ce guide propose d'abord une brève introduction aux éléments essentiels de la glaciologie, de la formation de la glace aux mécanismes d'érosion du substrat rocheux par la glace et l'eau. Un chapitre est consacré aux anciennes glaciations et un autre chapitre aux traces laissées par la période chaude du Moyen-âge et à l'histoire du Petit âge glaciaire. Im Val d'Hérens findet man weder die längsten Gletscher, noch die höchsten Gipfel der Alpen. Aber das Tal bietet Dank seinen Landschaften, Gletschern und Flüssen, seiner Fauna und der Flora ideale Voraussetzungen zur Beobachtung der Funktionsweise und der Veränderungen der Umwelt. Es bietet auch ideale Bedingungen um die Zeichen und Geschichte der jungen Gletscher- und Klimageschichte zu beobachten. Dieser Führer präsentiert zuerst eine kurze Einführung in die Glaziologie, von der Bildung des Eises bis zur Erosion des Felsuntergrundes, dem Transport und Ablagerung der Sedimente. Weitere Kapitel sind den Eiszeiten, dem warmen Mittelalter und der Kleinen Eiszeit gewidmet. In the Val d'Hérens there are neither the longest glacier tongues, nor the highest mountain peaks of the Valais. But this valley offers, through its landscapes, glaciers and rivers, and also its flora, extraordinary conditions for the observation of natural processes and landscape changes. The valley reveals to our eyes ideal didactic conditions to study the facts and processes of the recent glacial history. This guide presents a brief introduction to the main elements of glaciology, from ice formation mechanisms to erosion of the bedrock through ice and water. The following chapter focuses on the ancient glaciations and the next one on the imprints left by the warm Middle Ages period and the history of the Little Ice Age.

Following the symposium "Basement-cover relationships in the Alps" in Verbier, the excursion focuses on the Alpine structural evolution of the Briançonnais and Piémontais domains. Three tectonic processes involving basements and covers are illustrated along the Val d'Hérens section: 1) detachment of the Briançonnais covers along one or two Triassic evaporitic levels, 2) Alpine inversion and structuration of Permo-Carboniferous basins, 3) cover substitution on the peeled Briançonnais basements by slices of external Piemontais cover included into the thrusted Combin Zone.
