Search

The Fornax galaxy cluster is the richest nearby (D ~ 20 Mpc) galaxy association in the southern sky. As such, it provides a wealth of oportunities to elucidate on the processes where environment holds a key role in transforming galaxies. Although it has been the focus of many studies, Fornax has never been explored with contiguous homogeneous wide-field imaging in 12 photometric narrow- and broad-bands like those provided by the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). In this paper we present the S-PLUS Fornax Project (S+FP) that aims to comprehensively analyse the galaxy content of the Fornax cluster using S-PLUS. Our data set consists of 106 S-PLUS wide-field frames (FoV ~ 1.4 x 1.4 deg$^2$) observed in five SDSS-like ugriz broad-bands and seven narrow-bands covering specific spectroscopic features like [OII], CaII H+K, H$\delta$, G-band, Mg b triplet, H$\alpha$, and the CaII triplet. Based on S-PLUS specific automated photometry, aimed at correctly detecting Fornax galaxies and globular clusters in S-PLUS images, our dataset provides the community with catalogues containing homogeneous 12-band photometry for ~ 3 x 10$^6$ resolved and unresolved objects within a region extending over ~ 208 deg$^2$ (~ 5 Rvir in RA) around Fornax' central galaxy, NGC 1399. We further explore the EAGLE and IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations to identify 45 Fornax-like clusters and generate mock images on all 12 S-PLUS bands of these structures down to galaxies with M$\star \geq 10^8$ M$\odot$. We derived molecular gas fractions ($f_\mathrm{mol}=M_\mathrm{mol}/M_*$) and depletion times ($\tau_\mathrm{mol}= M_\mathrm{mol}/\mathrm{SFR} $) for 353 galaxies representative of the local star-forming population with $10^{8.5}\,M_\odot < M_* < 10^{10.5}\,M_\odot$ drawn from the ALLSMOG and xCOLDGASS surveys of CO(2-1) and CO(1-0) line emission. By adding constraints from low-mass galaxies and upper limits for CO non-detections, we find the median molecular gas fraction of the local star-forming population to be constant at $\log f_\mathrm{mol}=-0.99^{+0.22}_{-0.19}$, challenging previous reports of increased molecular gas fractions in low-mass galaxies. Above $M_*\sim 10^{10.5}\,M_\odot$, we find the $f_\mathrm{mol}$ vs. $M_*$ relation to be sensitive to the selection criteria for star-forming galaxies. We tested the robustness of our results against different prescriptions for the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor and different selection criteria for star-forming galaxies. The depletion timescale $\tau_\mathrm{mol}$ weakly depends on $M_*$, following a power law with a best-fit slope of $0.16\pm 0.03$. This suggests that small variations in specific SFR ($ \mathrm{sSFR=SFR}/M_*$) across the local main sequence of star-forming galaxies with $M_* < 10^{10.5}\,M_\odot$ are mainly driven by differences in the efficiency of converting the available molecular gas into stars. We tested these results against a possible dependence of $f_\mathrm{mol}$ and $\tau_\mathrm{mol}$ on the surrounding (group) environment of the targets by splitting them into centrals, satellites, and isolated galaxies, and find no significant variation between these populations. We apply a population-orbit superposition method to 16 galaxies in the Fornax cluster observed with MUSE/VLT in the context of the Fornax3D project. By fitting the luminosity distribution, stellar kinematics, and age and metallicity maps simultaneously, we obtained the internal stellar orbit distribution, as well as the age and metallicity distribution of stars on different orbits for each galaxy. Based on the model, we decompose each galaxy into a dynamically cold disk (orbital circularity $\lambda_z\ge0.8$) and a dynamically hot non-disk component (orbital circularity $\lambda_z<0.8$), and obtain the surface-brightness, age, and metallicity radial profiles of each component. The galaxy infall time into the cluster is strongly correlated with galaxy cold-disk age with older cold disks in ancient infallers. We quantify the infall time $t_{\rm infall}$ of each galaxy with its cold-disk age using a correlation calibrated with TNG50 cosmological simulations. For galaxies in the Fornax cluster, we found that the luminosity fraction of cold disk in galaxies with $t_{\rm infall}>8$ Gyr are a factor of $\sim 4$ lower than in more recent infallers while controlling for total stellar mass. Nine of the 16 galaxies have spatially extended cold disks, and most of them show positive or zero age gradients; stars in the inner disk are $\sim 2-5$ Gyr younger than that in the outer disk, in contrast to the expectation of inside-out growth. Our results indicate that the assembly of cold disks in galaxies is strongly affected by their infall into clusters, by either removal of gas in outer regions or even tidally stripping or heating part of the pre-existing disks. Star formation in outer disks can stop quickly after the galaxy falls into the cluster, while star formation in the inner disks can last for a few Gyrs more, building the positive age gradient measured in cold disks., Comment: 31 pages, 32 figures, Accepted to A&A

We study the evolution of kinematically-defined stellar discs in 10 Fornax-like clusters identified in the TNG50 run from the IllustrisTNG suite of cosmological simulations. We considered disc galaxies with present-day stellar mass $M_{\star}\geq 3 \times 10^{8} M_{\odot}$ and follow their evolution since first entering their host cluster. Very few stellar discs survive since falling in such dense environments, ranging from 40% surviving to all being disrupted. Such survival rates are consistent with what reported earlier for the two more massive, Virgo-like clusters in TNG50. In absolute terms, however, the low number of present-day disc galaxies in Fornax-like clusters could be at odds with the presence of three edge-on disc galaxies in the central regions of the actual Fornax cluster, as delineated by the Fornax3D survey. When looking at the Fornax analogues from random directions and with the same selection function of Fornax3D, the probability of finding three edge-on disc galaxies in any one Fornax-like cluster in TNG50 is rather low, albeit not impossible. We also compared the stellar-population properties near the equatorial plane derived from integral-field spectroscopy for the three edge-ons in Fornax to similar line-of-sight integrated values for present-day disc galaxies in TNG50. For one of these, the very old and metal-rich stellar population of its disc cannot be matched by any the disc galaxies in TNG50, including objects in the field. We discuss possible interpretations of these findings, while pointing to future studies on passive cluster spirals as a way to further test state-of-the-art cosmological simulations., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. This work is based on high quality integral-field spectroscopic data obtained with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The 21 brightest ($m_B\leq 15$ mag) early-type galaxies (ETGs) inside the virial radius of the Fornax cluster are observed out to distances of $\sim2-3\ R_{\rm e}$. Deep imaging from the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) is also available for the sample ETGs. We investigate the variation of the galaxy structural properties as a function of the total stellar mass and cluster environment. Moreover, we correlate the size scales of the luminous components derived from a multi-component decomposition of the VST surface-brightness radial profiles of the sample ETGs with the MUSE radial profiles of stellar kinematic and population properties. The results are compared with both theoretical predictions and previous observational studies and used to address the assembly history of the massive ETGs of the Fornax cluster. We find that galaxies in the core and north-south clump of the cluster, which have the highest accreted mass fraction, show milder metallicity gradients in their outskirts than the galaxies infalling into the cluster. We also find a segregation in both age and metallicity between the galaxies belonging to the core and north-south clump and the infalling galaxies. [arXiv Abridged] In this work, we explore new spatially-resolved measurements of the IMF for three edge-on lenticular galaxies in the Fornax cluster. Specifically, we utilise existing orbit-based dynamical models, which re-produce the measured stellar kinematics, in order to fit the new IMF maps within this orbital framework. We then investigate correlations between intrinsic orbital properties and the local IMF. We find that, within each galaxy, the high-angular-momentum, disk-like stars exhibit an IMF which is rich in dwarf stars. The centrally-concentrated pressure-supported orbits have IMF which are similarly rich in dwarf stars. Conversely, orbits at large radius which have intermediate angular momentum exhibit IMF which are markedly less dwarf-rich relative to the other regions of the same galaxy. Assuming that the stars which, in the present-day, reside on dynamically-hot orbits at large radii are dominated by accreted populations, we can interpret these findings as a correlation between the dwarf-richness of a population of stars, and the mass of the host in which it formed. Specifically, deeper gravitational potentials would produce more dwarf-rich populations, resulting in the relative deficiency of dwarf stars which originated in the lower-mass accreted satellites. Conversely, the central and high angular-momentum populations are likely dominated by in-situ stars, which were formed in the more massive host itself. There are also global differences between the three galaxies studied here, of up to $\sim 0.3\ \mathrm{dex}$ in the IMF parameter $\xi$. The role played by environment in galaxy evolution is a current debate in astronomy. The degree to which environment can alter, re-shape, or drive galaxy evolution is a topic of discussion in both fronts, observations and simulations. This paper analyses the gas metallicity gradients for a sample of 10 Fornax cluster galaxies observed with MUSE as part of the Fornax3D project. Detailed maps of emission lines allowed a precise determination of gas metallicity and metallicity gradients. The integrated gas metallicity of our Fornax cluster galaxies show slightly higher metallicities (~0.045 dex) in comparison to a control sample. In addition, we find signs of a mass and metallicity segregation from the center to the outskirts of the cluster. By comparing our Fornax cluster metallicity gradients with a control sample we find a general median offset of ~0.04 dex/Re, with 8 of our galaxies showing flatter or more positive gradients. We find no systematic difference between the gradients of recent and intermediate infallers when considering the projected distance of each galaxy to the cluster center. To identify the origin of the observed offset in the metallicity gradients, we perform a similar analysis with data from the TNG50 simulation. We identify 12 subhalos in Fornax-like clusters and compare their metallicity gradients with a control sample of field subhalos. This exercise also shows a flattening in the metallicity gradients for galaxies in Fornax-like halos, with a median offset of ~0.05 dex/Re We also analyse the merger history, Mach numbers (M), and ram pressure stripping of our TNG50 sample. We conclude that the observed flattening in metallicity gradients is likely due to a combination of galaxies traveling at supersonic velocities (M>1) that are experiencing high ram pressure stripping and flybys., Comment: Accepted by A&A

Hot atmospheres pervading galaxy clusters, groups, and early-type galaxies are rich in metals, produced during epochs and diffused via processes that are still to be determined. While this enrichment has been routinely investigated in clusters, metals in lower mass systems are more challenging to probe with standard X-ray exposures and spectroscopy. In this paper, we focus on very deep XMM-Newton ($\sim$350 ks) observations of NGC 1404, a massive elliptical galaxy experiencing ram-pressure stripping of its hot atmosphere while infalling toward the centre of the Fornax cluster, with the aim to derive abundances through its hot gas extent. Importantly, we report the existence of a new fitting bias - the "double Fe bias" - leading to an underestimate of the Fe abundance when two thermal components cannot realistically model the complex temperature structure present in the outer atmosphere of the galaxy. Contrasting with the ''metal conundrum'' seen in clusters, the Fe and Mg masses of NGC 1404 are measured 1-2 orders of magnitude below what stars and supernovae could have reasonably produced and released. In addition, we note the remarkable Solar abundance ratios of the galaxy's halo, different from its stellar counterpart but similar to the chemical composition of the ICM of rich clusters. Completing the clusters regime, all these findings provide additional support toward a scenario of early enrichment, at play over two orders of magnitude in mass. The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is central to our interpretation of astronomical observables and to our understanding of most baryonic processes within galaxies. The universality of the IMF, suggested by observations in our own Milky Way, has been thoroughly revisited due to the apparent excess of low-mass stars in the central regions of massive quiescent galaxies. As part of the efforts within the Fornax 3D project, we aim to characterize the two-dimensional IMF variations in a sample of 23 quiescent galaxies within the Fornax cluster. For each galaxy in the sample, we measured the mean age, metallicity, [Mg/Fe], and IMF slope maps from spatially resolved integrated spectra. The IMF maps show a variety of behaviors and internal substructures, roughly following metallicity variations. However, metallicity alone is not able to fully explain the complexity exhibited by the IMF maps. In particular, for relatively metal-poor stellar populations, the slope of the IMF seems to depend on the (specific) star formation rate at which stars were formed. Moreover, metallicity maps have systematically higher ellipticities than IMF slope ones. At the same time, both metallicity and IMF slope maps have at the same time higher ellipticities than the stellar light distribution in our sample of galaxies. In addition we find that, regardless of the stellar mass, every galaxy in our sample shows a positive radial [Mg/Fe] gradient. This results in a strong [Fe/H]-[Mg/Fe] relation, similar to what is observed in nearby, resolved galaxies. Since the formation history and chemical enrichment of galaxies are causally driven by changes in the IMF, our findings call for a physically motivated interpretation of stellar population measurements based on integrated spectra that take into account any possible time evolution of the stellar populations., Comment: 14 pages and 10 figures (plus Appendix including all the stellar population maps). Context. Extragalactic Planetary Nebulae (PNe) are useful distance indicators and are often used to trace the dark-matter content in external galaxies. At the same time, PNe can also be used as probes of their host galaxy stellar populations and to help understanding the later stages of stellar evolution. Previous works have indicated that specific number of PNe per stellar luminosity can vary across different galaxies and as a function of stellar-population properties, for instance increasing with decreasing stellar metallicity. Aims. In this study we further explore the importance of stellar metallicity in driving the properties of the PNe population in early-type galaxies, using three edge-on galaxies in the Fornax cluster offering a clear view into their predominantly metal-rich and metal-poor regions near the equatorial plane or both below and above it, respectively . Methods. Using VLT-MUSE integral-field observations and dedicated PNe detection procedures, we construct the PNe luminosity function and compute the luminosity-specific number of PNe alpha in both in- and off-plane regions of our edge-on systems. Results. Comparing these alpha values with metallicity measurements also based on the same MUSE data, we find no evidence for an increase in the specific abundance of PNe when transitioning between metal-rich and metal-poor regions. Conclusions. Our analysis highlights the importance of ensuring spatial consistency to avoid misleading results when investigating the link between PNe and their parent stellar populations and suggest that in passively-evolving systems variations in the specific number of PNe may pertain to rather extreme metallicity regimes found either in the innermost or outermost regions of galaxies.

Nuclear star clusters (NSCs) are the densest stellar systems in the Universe and are found in the centres of all types of galaxies. They are thought to form via mergers of star clusters such as ancient globular clusters (GCs) that spiral to the centre as a result of dynamical friction or through in-situ star formation directly at the galaxy centre. There is evidence that both paths occur, but the relative contribution of either channel and their correlation with galaxy properties are not yet constrained observationally. We aim to derive the dominant NSC formation channel for a sample of 25 nucleated galaxies, mostly in the Fornax galaxy cluster, with stellar masses between $M_\rm{gal} \sim 10^8$ and $10^{10.5} M_\odot$ and NSC masses between $M_\rm{NSC} \sim 10^5$ and $10^{8.5} M_\odot$. Using Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) data from the Fornax 3D survey and the ESO archive, we derive star formation histories, mean ages and metallicities of NSCs, and compare them to the host galaxies. In many low-mass galaxies, the NSCs are significantly more metal-poor than the hosts with properties similar to GCs. In contrast, in the massive galaxies, we find diverse star formation histories and cases of ongoing or recent in-situ star formation. Massive NSCs ($> 10^7 M_\odot$) occupy a different region in the mass-metallicity diagram than lower mass NSCs and GCs, indicating a different enrichment history. We find a clear transition of the dominant NSC formation channel with both galaxy and NSC mass. We hypothesise that while GC-accretion forms the NSCs of the dwarf galaxies, central star formation is responsible for the efficient mass build up in the most massive NSCs in our sample. At intermediate masses, both channels can contribute. Abridged for arXiv: In this work, we apply a powerful new technique in order to observationally derive accurate assembly histories through a self-consistent combined stellar dynamical and population galaxy model. We present this approach for three edge-on lenticular galaxies from the Fornax3D project -- FCC 153, FCC 170, and FCC 177 -- in order to infer their mass assembly histories individually and in the context of the Fornax cluster. The method was tested on mock data from simulations to quantify its reliability. We find that the galaxies studied here have all been able to form dynamically-cold (intrinsic vertical velocity dispersion $\sigma_z \lesssim 50\ {\rm km}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$) stellar disks after cluster infall. Moreover, the pre-existing (old) high angular momentum components have retained their angular momentum (orbital circularity $\lambda_z > 0.8$) through to the present day. Comparing the derived assembly histories with a comparable galaxy in a low-density environment -- NGC 3115 -- we find evidence for cluster-driven suppression of stellar accretion and merging. We measured the intrinsic stellar age--velocity-dispersion relation and find that the shape of the relation is consistent with galaxies in the literature across redshift. There is tentative evidence for enhancement in the luminosity-weighted intrinsic vertical velocity dispersion due to the cluster environment. But importantly, there is an indication that metallicity may be a key driver of this relation. We finally speculate that the cluster environment is responsible for the S0 morphology of these galaxies via the gradual external perturbations, or `harassment', generated within the cluster., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Globular clusters (GCs) are found ubiquitously in massive galaxies and due to their old ages, they are regarded as fossil records of galaxy evolution. Spectroscopic studies of GC systems are often limited to the outskirts of galaxies, where GCs stand out against the galaxy background and serve as bright tracers of galaxy assembly. In this work, we use the capabilities of the Multi Unit Explorer Spectrograph (MUSE) to extract a spectroscopic sample of 722 GCs in the inner regions ($\lesssim 3 R_\text{eff}$) of 32 galaxies in the Fornax cluster. These galaxies were observed as part of the Fornax 3D project, a MUSE survey that targets early and late-type galaxies within the virial radius of Fornax. After accounting for the galaxy background in the GC spectra, we extracted line-of-sight velocities and determined metallicities of a sub-sample of 238 GCs. We found signatures of rotation within GC systems, and comparing the GC kinematics and that of the stellar body shows that the GCs trace the spheroid of the galaxies. While the red GCs prove to closely follow the metallicity profile of the host galaxy, the blue GCs show a large spread of metallicities but they are generally more metal-poor than the host., Comment: 13 pages + appendix, accepted for publication in A&A, updated to published version

Globular cluster (GC) systems of massive galaxies often show a bimodal colour distribution. This has been interpreted as a metallicity bimodality, created by a two-stage galaxy formation where the red, metal-rich GCs were formed in the parent halo and the blue metal-poor GCs were accreted. This interpretation, however, crucially depends on the assumption that GCs are exclusively old stellar systems with a linear colour-metallicity relation (CZR). The shape of the CZR and range of GC ages are currently under debate, because their study requires high quality spectra to derive reliable stellar population properties. We determined metallicities with full spectral fitting from a sample of 187 GCs with high spectral signal-to-noise ratio in 23 galaxies of the Fornax cluster that were observed as part of the Fornax 3D project. The derived CZR from this sample is non-linear and can be described by a piecewise linear function with a break point at ($g - z$) $\sim$ 1.1 mag. The less massive galaxies in our sample ($M_\ast < 10^{10} M_\odot$) appear to have slightly younger GCs, but the shape of the CZR is insensitive to the GC ages. Although the least massive galaxies lack red, metal-rich GCs, a non-linear CZR is found irrespective of the galaxy mass, even in the most massive galaxies ($M_\ast \geq 10^{11} M_\odot$). Our CZR predicts narrow unimodal GC metallicity distributions for low mass and broad unimodal distributions for very massive galaxies, dominated by a metal-poor and metal-rich peak, respectively, and bimodal distributions for galaxies with intermediate masses (10$^{10}$ $\leq$ $M_\ast < 10^{11} M_\odot$) as a consequence of the relative fraction of red and blue GCs. Extragalactic planetary nebulae (PNe) are detectable through relatively strong nebulous [OIII] emission and act as direct probes into the local stellar population. Because they have an apparently universal invariant magnitude cut-off, PNe are also considered to be a remarkable standard candle for distance estimation. Through detecting PNe within the galaxies, we aim to connect the relative abundances of PNe to the properties of their host galaxy stellar population. By removing the stellar background components from FCC 167 and FCC 219, we aim to produce PN luminosity functions (PNLF) of these galaxies, and thereby also estimate the distance modulus to these two systems. Finally, we test the reliability and robustness of our novel detection and analysis method. It detects unresolved point sources by their [OIII] 5007{\AA} emission within regions that have previously been unexplored. We model the [OIII] emissions in the spatial and spectral dimensions together, as afforded to us by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), and we draw on data gathered as part of the Fornax3D survey. For each source, we inspect the properties of the nebular emission lines to remove other sources that might hinder the safe construction of the PNLF, such as supernova remnants and HII regions. As a further step, we characterise any potential limitations and draw conclusions about the reliability of our modelling approach through a set of simulations. By applying this novel detection and modelling approach to integral field unit observations, we report for the distance estimates and luminosity-specific PNe frequency values for the two galaxies. The 31 brightest galaxies (m_B < 15 mag) inside the virial radius of the Fornax cluster were observed from the centres to the outskirts with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer on the Very Large Telescope. These observations provide detailed high-resolution maps of the line-of-sight kinematics and line strengths of the stars and ionised gas reaching 2-3 Re for 21 early-type galaxies and 1-2 Re for 10 late-type galaxies. The majority of the galaxies are regular rotators, with eight hosting a kinematically distinct core. Only two galaxies are slow rotators. The mean age, total metallicity, and [Mg/Fe] abundance ratio in the bright central region inside 0.5 Re and in the galaxy outskirts are presented. Extended emission-line gas is detected in 13 galaxies, most of them are late-type objects with wide-spread star formation. The measured structural properties are analysed in relation to the galaxies' position in the projected phase space of the cluster. This shows that the Fornax cluster appears to consist of three main groups of galaxies inside the virial radius: the old core; a clump of galaxies, which is aligned with the local large-scale structure and was accreted soon after the formation of the core; and a group of galaxies that fell in more recently., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Journal. We present a convenient, all-in-one framework for the scientific analysis of fully reduced, (integral-field) spectroscopic data. The GIST pipeline (Galaxy IFU Spectroscopy Tool) is entirely written in Python3 and conducts all steps from the preparation of input data, over the scientific analysis to the production of publication-quality plots. In its basic setup, it extracts stellar kinematics, performs an emission-line analysis and derives stellar population properties from full spectral fitting as well as via the measurement of absorption line-strength indices by exploiting the well-known pPXF and GandALF routines, where the latter has now been implemented in Python. The pipeline is not specific to any instrument or analysis technique and provides easy means of modification and further development, as of its modular code architecture. An elaborate, Python-native parallelisation is implemented and tested on various machines. The software further features a dedicated visualization routine with a sophisticated graphical user interface. This allows an easy, fully-interactive plotting of all measurements, spectra, fits, and residuals, as well as star formation histories and the weight distribution of the models. The pipeline has successfully been applied to both low and high-redshift data from MUSE, PPAK (CALIFA), and SINFONI, as well as to simulated data for HARMONI@ELT and WEAVE and is currently being used by the TIMER, Fornax3D, and PHANGS collaborations. We used deep MUSE observations to perform a stellar-kinematic and population analysis of FCC 153 and FCC 177, two edge-on S0 galaxies in the Fornax cluster. The geometrical definition of the different structural components of these two galaxies allows us to describe the nature of their thick disks. These are both old, relatively metal poor and [Mg/Fe]-enhanced, and their star formation history (SFH) reveals a minor younger component whose chemical properties suggest its later accretion. Moreover, the outer regions of these geometrically defined thick disks show higher values of metallicity and lower values of [Mg/Fe]. These stars probably formed in the thin-disk region and they were dynamically heated to form the flares present in these two galaxies. We propose different formation scenarios for the three populations of these thick disks: in-situ formation, accretion and disk heating. A clear distinction in age is found between the metal poor and [Mg/Fe]-enhanced thick disks (old, $\sim 12-13$ Gyr), and the metal rich and less [Mg/Fe]-enhanced thin disks (young, $\sim 4-5$ Gyr). These two galaxies show signs of relatively recent star formation in their thin disks and nuclear regions. While the thin disks show more continuous SFHs, the nuclei display a rather bursty SFH. These two galaxies are located outside of the densest region of the Fornax cluster where FCC 170 resides. This other edge-on S0 galaxy was studied by \citet{Pinna2019}. We compare and discuss our results with this previous study. The differences between these three galaxies, at different distances from the cluster center, suggest that the environment can have a strong effect on the galaxy evolutionary path., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) regulates the baryonic cycle within galaxies, and is a key ingredient to translate observations into physical quantities. Although for decades it was assumed to be universal, there is now growing observational evidence showing that the center of massive early-type galaxies host an enhanced population of low-mass stars compared to the expectations from the Milky Way. Moreover, these variations in the IMF have been found to be related to the radial metallicity variations in massive galaxies. We present here a two-dimensional stellar population analysis of the massive lenticular galaxy FCC 167 (NGC 1380) as part of the Fornax3D project. Using a newly developed stellar population fitting scheme, we derive a full two-dimensional IMF map of an early-type galaxy. This two-dimensional analysis allows us go further than a radial analysis, showing how the metallicity changes along a disc-like structure while the IMF follows a distinct, less disky distribution. Thus, our findings indicate that metallicity cannot be the sole driver of the observed radial IMF variations. In addition, a comparison with the orbital decomposition shows suggestive evidence of a coupling between stellar population properties and the internal dynamical structure of FCC 167, where metallicity and IMF maps seem to track the distribution of cold and warm orbits, respectively., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. We present and discuss the stellar kinematics and populations of the S0 galaxy FCC 170 (NGC 1381) in the Fornax cluster, using deep MUSE data from the Fornax 3D survey. We show the maps of the first four moments of the stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution and of the mass-weighted mean stellar age, metallicity and [Mg/Fe] abundance ratio. The high-quality MUSE stellar kinematic measurements unveil the structure of this massive galaxy: a nuclear disk, a bar seen as a boxy bulge with a clear higher-velocity-dispersion X shape, a fast-rotating and flaring thin disk and a slower rotating thick disk. Whereas their overall old age makes it difficult to discuss differences in the formation epoch between these components, we find a clear-cut distinction between metal-rich and less [Mg/Fe]-enhanced populations in the thin-disk, boxy-bulge and nuclear disk, and more metal-poor and [Mg/Fe]-enhanced stars in the thick disk. Located in the densest region of the Fornax cluster, where signs of tidal stripping have been recently found, the evolution of FCC 170 might have been seriously affected by its environment. We discuss the possibility of its "pre-processing" in a subgroup before falling into the present-day cluster, which would have shaped this galaxy a long time ago. The thick disk displays a composite star formation history, as a significant fraction of younger stars co-exist with the main older thick-disk population. The former sub-population is characterized by even lower-metallicity and higher-[Mg/Fe] values, suggesting that these stars formed later and faster in a less chemically evolved satellite, which was subsequently accreted. Finally, we discuss evidence that metal-rich and less [Mg/Fe]-enhanced stars were brought in the outer parts of the thick disk by the flaring of the thin disk., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures

Galaxies continuously reprocess their interstellar material. One can therefore expect changing dust grain properties in galaxies which have followed different evolutionary pathways. Determining the intrinsic dust grain mix of a galaxy helps in reconstructing its evolutionary history. Early-type galaxies occasionally display regular dust lanes in their central regions. Due to the relatively simple geometry and composition of their stellar bodies, these galaxies are ideal to disentangle dust mix variations from geometric effects. We therefore model the various components of such a galaxy (FCC 167). We reconstruct its recent history, and investigate the possible fate of the dust lane. MUSE and ALMA observations reveal a nested ISM structure. An ionised-gas disk pervades the central regions of FCC 167, including those occupied by the main dust lane. Inward of the dust lane, we also find a disk/ring of cold molecular gas where stars are forming and HII regions contribute to the ionised-gas emission. Further in, the gas ionisation points towards an active galactic nucleus and the fuelling of a central supermassive black hole from its surrounding ionised and molecular reservoir. Observational constraints and radiative transfer models suggest the dust and gas are distributed in a ring-like geometry and the dust mix lacks small grains. The derived dust destruction timescales from sputtering in hot gas are short and we conclude that the dust must be strongly self-shielding and clumpy, or will quickly be eroded and disappear. We present new measurements for the nuclear stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\ast}$ within sub-arcsecond apertures for 28 nearby galaxies. Our data consist of Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) long-slit spectra obtained with the G750M grating centred on the H$\alpha$ spectral range. We fit the spectra using a library of single stellar population models and Gaussian emission lines, while constraining in most cases the stellar-population content from an initial fit to G430L STIS spectra. We illustrate how these $\sigma_{\ast}$ measurements can be useful for constraining the mass $M_{\bullet}$ of supermassive black holes (SBHs) by concentrating on the cases of the lenticular galaxies NGC4435 and NGC4459. These are characterized by similar ground-based half-light radii stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm e}$ values but remarkably different $M_{\bullet}$ as obtained from modelling their central ionised-gas kinematics, where NGC4435 appears to host a significantly undermassive SBH compared to what is expected from the $M_{\bullet}-\sigma_{\rm e}$ relation. For both galaxies, we build Jeans axisymmetric dynamical models to match the ground-based stellar kinematics obtained with SAURON integral-field spectrograph, including a SBH with $M_{\bullet}$ value as predicted by the $M_{\bullet}-\sigma_{\rm e}$ relation and using high-resolution HST images taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys to construct the stellar-mass model. By mimicking the HST observing conditions we use such reference models to make a prediction for the nuclear $\sigma_{\ast}$ value. Whereas this was found to agree with our nuclear $\sigma_{\ast}$ measurement for NGC4459, for NGC4435 the observed $\sigma_{\ast}$ is remarkably smaller than the predicted one, which further suggests that this galaxy could host an undermassive SBH., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, MNRAS accepted

We have observed the giant elliptical galaxy M87 during the Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Galaxy Evolution (VESTIGE), a blind narrow-band Halpha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the Canada French Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). The deep narrow-band image confirmed the presence of a filament of ionised gas extending up to ~ 3 kpc in the north-western direction and ~ 8 kpc to the south-east, with a couple of plumes of ionised gas, the weakest of which, at ~ 18 kpc from the nucleus, was previously unknown. The analysis of deep optical images taken from the NGVS survey confirms that this gas filament is associated with dust seen in absorption which is now detected up to ~ 2.4 kpc from the nucleus. We have also analysed the physical and kinematical properties of the ionised gas filament using deep IFU MUSE data covering the central 4.8 x 4.8 kpc^2 of the galaxy. The spectroscopic data confirms a perturbed kinematics of the ionised gas, with differences in velocity of ~ 700-800 km s^-1 on scales of < 1 kpc. The analysis of 2D diagnostic diagrams and the observed relationship between the shock-sensitive [OI]/Halpha line ratio and the velocity dispersion of the gas suggest that the gas is shock-ionised., Comment: Accepted for publication to Astronomy & Astrophysics

Aims. We study the kinematically distinct components in two early-type galaxies NGC 448 and NGC 4365 aided by integral-field observations with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope. We aim to measure the brightness profiles, kinematics, and stellar population properties of the peculiar kinematic structures in these galaxies and shed light on their true nature and formation mechanism. Methods. We use a kinematic decomposition technique to separate the individual contributions to the spectra of the two distinct kinematic components observed at each spatial position in the field of view. By folding back the outcome of a photometric decomposition we reduce the intrinsic degeneracies in recovering the kinematics and the best-fitting stellar spectral templates. Finally, by extracting the Lick line-strength indices for the individual components and fitting them to single stellar population models we derive their ages, metallicities, and {\alpha}/Fe overabundances. Results. The two kinematically decoupled stellar components in NGC 448 have similar ages, but different chemical compositions. The distinct kinematic feature in NGC 448 has a nearly exponential surface-brightness light profile, dominates in the innermost ~ 10", is smaller in size, and is very likely an embedded counter-rotating disk as also indicated by its kinematics. It has higher metallicity than the main galaxy stellar body and lower {\alpha}/Fe overabundance. By contrast, we do not find evidence for true decoupling in the two distinct kinematic components in NGC 4365. This confirms earlier work suggesting that the kinematically distinct core is likely not a separate dynamical structure, but most certainly likely a projection effect stemming from the orbital structure of this galaxy that was previously found to be intrinsically triaxial in shape., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, to appear in A&A

The Fornax cluster provides a uniquely compact laboratory to study the detailed history of early-type galaxies and the role played by environment in driving their evolution and their transformation from late-type galaxies. Using the superb capabilities of the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer on the Very Large Telescope, high-quality integral-field spectroscopic data were obtained for the inner regions of all the bright ($m_B\leq15$) galaxies within the virial radius of Fornax. The stellar haloes of early-type galaxies are also covered out to about four effective radii. State-of-the-art stellar dynamical and population modelling allows to aim in particular at better characterising the disc components of fast-rotating early-type galaxies, constraining radial variations in the stellar initial-mass functions and measuring the stellar age, metallicity, and $\alpha$-element abundance of stellar haloes in cluster galaxies. This paper describes the sample selection, observations, and overall goals of the survey, and provides initial results based on the spectroscopic data, including the detailed characterisation of stellar kinematics and populations to large radii; decomposition of galaxy components directly via their orbital structure; the ability to identify globular clusters and planetary nebulae, and derivation of high-quality emission-line diagnostics in the presence of complex ionised gas., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. We present a kinematic analysis of the dust-lane elliptical NGC 5626 based on MUSE observations. These data allow to robustly classify this galaxy as a fast rotator and to infer a virial mass of $10^{11.7} M_\odot$, making it one of the most massive fast rotators known. In addition, the depth and extent of the MUSE data reveal a strong kinematic twist in the stellar velocity field (by up to $45$ degrees beyond $1.5R_e$). A comparison with the ATLAS$^\mathrm{3D}$ sample underlines the rareness of this system, although we show that such a large-scale kinematic twist could have been missed by the ATLAS$^\mathrm{3D}$ data due to the limited spatial sampling of this survey (typically extending to $0.6R_e$ for massive ETGs). MUSE thus has the potential to unveil more examples of this type of galaxies. We present new stringent limits on the mass $M_{bh}$ of the central supermassive black hole for a sample of 7 nearby galaxies. Our $M_{bh}$ estimates are based on the dynamical modeling of the central width of the nebular emission lines measured over subarcsecond apertures with the Hubble Space Telescope. The central stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma_c$ of the sample galaxies is derived from new long-slit spectra from ground-based observations and the bulge effective radius is obtained from a two-dimensional photometric decomposition of the i-band images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The derived stringent $M_{bh}$ limits run parallel and above the $M_{bh}-\sigma_c$ relation with no systematic trend depending on the galaxy distance or morphology. This gives further support to previous findings suggesting that the nuclear gravitational potential is remarkably well traced by the width of the nebular lines when the gas is centrally peaked. With our investigation, the number of galaxies with stringent $M_{bh}$ limits obtained from nebular-line width increases to 114 and can be used for studying the scaling relations between $M_{bh}$ and properties of their host galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, AN in press

The newest generation of integral field unit spectrographs brings three-dimensional mapping of nearby galaxies one step closer. While the focus up to this point was mostly on stars and ionised gas, it is also possible to look at dust in a new, more complete way. Using MUSE science verification observations of NGC 5626, we map the interstellar matter in this dusty lenticular. We use the resolving power of MUSE to measure the optical attenuation with a spectral resolution of 6.25 \AA, at physical scales of 0.1-1 kpc. The integrated attenuation curve of NGC 5626 shows a smooth, slightly steeper than Milky Way and SMC attenuation curves. Several sharp features are superimposed: we measure lower attenuation at spectral emission lines and higher attenuation for the sodium line doublet. No correlation was observed between sodium line strength and reddening by dust on spatially resolved scales. Additionally, the continuum attenuation was found to be independent from the Balmer decrement (tracing ionised gas attenuation). We model and interpret the variations in the attenuation curves of each spatial resolution element of NGC 5626. We find that the amount and distribution of dust along the line-of-sight is highly degenerate with any variation in the intrinsic extinction law. Our analysis shows that the interstellar matter in NGC 5626 resides in a regular and well-settled disk. Our results preach caution in the application of simple recipes to de-redden global galaxy spectra and underlines the need for more realistic dust geometries when constructing such correction formulas., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

As a part of the mm-Wave Interferometric Survey of Dark Object Masses (WISDOM) project, we present an estimate of the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the nearby fast-rotator early-type galaxy NGC 3665. We obtained Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) B and C array observations of the $^{12}$CO$(J=2-1)$ emission line with a combined angular resolution of $0".59$. We analysed and modelled the three-dimensional molecular gas kinematics, obtaining a best-fit SMBH mass $M_{\rm BH}=5.75^{+1.49}_{-1.18} \times 10^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$, a mass-to-light ratio at $H$-band $(M/L)_{H}=1.45\pm0.04$ $(M/L)_{\odot, H}$, and other parameters describing the geometry of the molecular gas disc (statistical errors, all at $3\sigma$ confidence). We estimate the systematic uncertainties on the stellar $M/L$ to be $\approx0.2$ $(M/L)_{\odot, H}$, and on the SMBH mass to be $\approx0.4\times10^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$. The measured SMBH mass is consistent with that estimated from the latest correlations with galaxy properties. Following our older works, we also analysed and modelled the kinematics using only the major-axis position-velocity diagram, and conclude that the two methods are consistent., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

Nuclear stellar discs (NSDs) can help to constrain the assembly history of their host galaxies, as long as we can assume them to be fragile structures that are disrupted during merger events. In this work we investigate the fragility of NSDs by means of N-body simulations reproducing the last phases of a galaxy encounter, when the nuclear regions of the two galaxies merge. For this, we exposed a NSD set in the gravitational potential of the bulge and supermassive black hole of a primary galaxy to the impact of the supermassive black hole from a secondary galaxy. We explored merger events of different mass ratios, from major mergers with a 1:1 mass ratio to intermediate and minor interactions with 1:5 and 1:10 ratios, while considering various impact geometries. We analyse the end results of such mergers from different viewing angles and looked for possible photometric and kinematic signatures of the presence of a disc in the remnant surface density and velocity maps, while adopting detection limits from real observations. Our simulations show that indeed NSDs are fragile against major mergers, which leave little trace of NSDs both in images and velocity maps, while signatures of a disc can be found in the majority of the intermediate to minor-merger remnants and in particular when looking at their kinematics. These results show that NSDs could allow to distinguish between these two modes of galaxy assembly, which may indeed pertain to different kinds of galaxies or galactic environments., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

We present a study of the cold gas contents of the Atlas3D early-type galaxies, in the context of their optical colours, near-UV colours, and H\beta\ absorption line strengths. Early-type (elliptical and lenticular) galaxies are not as gas-poor as previously thought, and at least 40% of local early-type galaxies are now known to contain molecular and/or atomic gas. This cold gas offers the opportunity to study recent galaxy evolution through the processes of cold gas acquisition, consumption (star formation), and removal. Molecular and atomic gas detection rates range from 10% to 34% in red sequence early-type galaxies, depending on how the red sequence is defined, and from 50% to 70% in blue early-type galaxies. Notably, massive red sequence early-type galaxies (stellar masses > 5e10 Msun, derived from dynamical models) are found to have HI masses up to M(HI)/Mstar ~ 0.06 and H_2 masses up to M(H$_2$)/Mstar ~ 0.01. Some 20% of all massive early-type galaxies may have retained atomic and/or molecular gas through their transition to the red sequence. However, kinematic and metallicity signatures of external gas accretion (either from satellite galaxies or the intergalactic medium) are also common, particularly at stellar masses <= 5e10 Msun, where such signatures are found in ~ 50% of H$_2$-rich early-type galaxies. Our data are thus consistent with a scenario in which fast rotator early-type galaxies are quenched former spiral galaxies which have undergone some bulge growth processes, and in addition, some of them also experience cold gas accretion which can initiate a period of modest star formation activity. We present a detailed two-dimensional stellar dynamical analysis of a sample of 44 cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of individual central galaxies and their satellites. Kinematic maps of the stellar line-of-sight velocity, velocity dispersion, and higher-order Gauss-Hermite moments $h_3$ and $h_4$ are constructed for each central galaxy and for the most massive satellites. The amount of rotation is quantified using the $\lambda_{\mathrm{R}}$-parameter. The velocity, velocity dispersion, $h_3$, and $h_4$ fields of the simulated galaxies show a diversity similar to observed kinematic maps of early-type galaxies in the ATLAS$^{\rm{3D}}$ survey. This includes fast (regular), slow, and misaligned rotation, hot spheroids with embedded cold disk components as well as galaxies with counter-rotating cores or central depressions in the velocity dispersion. We link the present day kinematic properties to the individual cosmological formation histories of the galaxies. In general, major galaxy mergers have a significant influence on the rotation properties resulting in both a spin-down as well as a spin-up of the merger remnant. Lower mass galaxies with significant in-situ formation of stars, or with additional gas-rich major mergers - resulting in a spin-up - in their formation history, form elongated fast rotators with a clear anti-correlation of $h_3$ and $v/\sigma$. An additional formation path for fast rotators includes gas poor major mergers leading to a spin-up of the remnants. This formation path does not result in anti-correlated $h_3$ and $v/\sigma$. The galaxies most consistent with the rare class of non-rotating round early-type galaxies grow by gas-poor minor mergers alone. We detail the rich molecular story of NGC 1266, its serendipitous discovery within the ATLAS3D survey (Cappellari et al. 2011) and how it plays host to an AGN-driven molecular outflow, potentially quenching all of its star formation (SF) within the next 100 Myr. While major mergers appear to play a role in instigating outflows in other systems, deep imaging of NGC 1266 as well as stellar kinematic observations from SAURON, have failed to provide evidence that NGC 1266 has recently been involved in a major interaction. The molecular gas and the instantaneous SF tracers indicate that the current sites of star formation are located in a hypercompact disk within 200 pc of the nucleus (Fig. 1; SF rate ~ 2 Msuns/yr). On the other hand, tracers of recent star formation, such as the H{\beta} absorption map from SAURON and stellar population analysis show that the young stars are distributed throughout a larger area of the galaxy than current star formation. As the AGN at the center of NGC 1266 continues to drive cold gas out of the galaxy, we expect star formation rates to decline as the star formation is ultimately quenched. NGC 1266 is a nearby field galaxy observed as part of the ATLAS3D survey (Cappellari et al. 2011). NGC 1266 has been shown to host a compact (< 200 pc) molecular disk and a mass-loaded molecular outflow driven by the AGN (Alatalo et al. 2011). Very Long Basline Array (VLBA) observations at 1.65 GHz revealed a compact (diameter < 1.2 pc), high bright- ness temperature continuum source most consistent with a low-level AGN origin. The VLBA continuum source is positioned at the center of the molecular disk and may be responsible for the expulsion of molecular gas in NGC 1266. [Abridged] We present ground-based MDM V-band and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6um-band photometric observations of the 72 representative galaxies of the SAURON Survey. In combination with the SAURON stellar velocity dispersion measured within an effective radius (se), this allows us to explore the location of our galaxies in the main scaling relations. We investigate the dependence of these relations on our recent kinematical classification of early-type galaxies (i.e. Slow/Fast Rotators) and the stellar populations. Slow Rotator and Fast Rotator E/S0 galaxies do not populate distinct locations in the scaling relations, although Slow Rotators display a smaller intrinsic scatter. Surprisingly, extremely young objects do not display the bluest (V-[3.6]) colours in our sample, as is usually the case in optical colours. This can be understood in the context of the large contribution of TP-AGB stars to the infrared, even for young populations, resulting in a very tight (V-[3.6]) - se relation that in turn allows us to define a strong correlation between metallicity and velocity dispersion. Many Sa galaxies appear to follow the Fundamental Plane defined by E/S0 galaxies. Galaxies that appear offset from the relations correspond mostly to objects with extremely young populations, with signs of on-going, extended star formation. We correct for this effect in the Fundamental Plane, by replacing luminosity with stellar mass using an estimate of the stellar mass-to-light ratio, so that all galaxies are part of a tight, single relation. The new estimated coefficients are consistent in both photometric bands and suggest that differences in stellar populations account for about half of the observed tilt with respect to the virial prediction. The molecular gas content of local early-type galaxies is constrained and discussed in relation to their evolution. First, as part of the Atlas3D survey, we present the first complete, large (260 objects), volume-limited single-dish survey of CO in normal local early-type galaxies. We find a surprisingly high detection rate of 22%, independent of luminosity and at best weakly dependent on environment. Second, the extent of the molecular gas is constrained with CO synthesis imaging, and a variety of morphologies is revealed. The kinematics of the molecular gas and stars are often misaligned, implying an external gas origin in over a third of the systems, although this behaviour is drastically diffferent between field and cluster environments. Third, many objects appear to be in the process of forming regular kpc-size decoupled disks, and a star formation sequence can be sketched by piecing together multi-wavelength information on the molecular gas, current star formation, and young stars. Last, early-type galaxies do not seem to systematically obey all our usual prejudices regarding star formation, following the standard Schmidt-Kennicutt law but not the far infrared-radio correlation. This may suggest a greater diversity in star formation processes than observed in disk galaxies. The mass assembly of galaxies leaves various imprints on their surroundings, such as shells, streams and tidal tails. The frequency and properties of these fine structures depend on the mechanism driving the mass assembly: e.g. a monolithic collapse, rapid cold-gas accretion followed by violent disk instabilities, minor mergers or major dry / wet mergers. Therefore, by studying the outskirts of galaxies, one can learn about their main formation mechanism. I present here our on-going work to characterize the outskirts of Early-Type Galaxies (ETGs), which are powerful probes at low redshift of the hierarchical mass assembly of galaxies. This work relies on ultra-deep optical images obtained at CFHT with the wide-field of view MegaCam camera of field and cluster ETGs obtained as part of the Atlas-3D and NGVS projects. State of the art numerical simulations are used to interpret the data. The images reveal a wealth of unknown faint structures at levels as faint as 29 mag arcsec-2 in the g-band. Nuclear Stellar Disks (NSDs), of a few tens to hundreds of parsec across, are a common and yet poorly studied feature of early-type galaxies. Still, such small disks represent a powerful tool to constrain the assembling history of galaxies, since they can be used to trace to the epoch when galaxies experienced their last major merger event. By studying the fraction and stellar age of NSDs it is thus possible to test the predictions for the assembly history of early-type galaxies according the current hierarchical paradigm for galaxy formation. In this paper we have produced the most comprehensive census of NSDs in nearby early-type galaxies by searching for such disks in objects within 100 Mpc and by using archival images from the Hubble Space Telescope. We found that NSDs are present in approximately 20% of early-type galaxies, and that the fraction of galaxies with NSDs does not depend on their Hubble type nor on their galactic environment, whereas the incidence of NSDs appears to decline in the most massive systems. Furthermore, we have separated the light contribution of twelve such disks from that of their surrounding stellar bulge in order to extract their physical properties. We study resolution effects in numerical simulations of gas-rich and gas-poor major mergers, and show that the formation of slowly-rotating elliptical galaxies often requires a resolution that is beyond the present-day standards to be properly modelled. Our sample of equal-mass merger models encompasses various masses and spatial resolutions, ranging from about 200pc and 10^5 particles per component, typical of some recently published major merger simulations, to up to 32pc and 10^3 M_sun in simulations using 2.4 x 10^7 collisionless particles and 1.2 x 10^7 gas particles, among the highest resolutions reached so far for gas-rich major merger of massive disc galaxies. We find that the formation of fast-rotating early-type galaxies, that are flattened by a significant residual rotation, is overall correctly reproduced at all such resolutions. However, the formation of slow-rotating early-type galaxies, which have a low residual angular momentum and are supported mostly by anisotropic velocity dispersions, is strongly resolution-dependent. The evacuation of angular momentum from the main stellar body is largely missed at standard resolution, and systems that should be slow rotators are then found to be fast rotators. The effect is most important for gas-rich mergers, but is also witnessed in mergers with an absent or modest gas component. The effect is robust with respect to our initial conditions and interaction orbits, and originates in the physical treatment of the relaxation process during the coalescence of the galaxies. Our findings show that a high-enough resolution is required to accurately model the global properties of merger remnants and the evolution of their angular momentum. Small and bright stellar disks with scale lengths of few tens of parsec are known to reside in the center of galaxies. They are believed to have formed in a dissipational process as the end result of star formation in gas either accreted in a merging (or acquisition) event or piled up by the secular evolution of a nuclear bar. Only few of them have been studied in detail to date. Using archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, we investigated the photometric parameters of the nuclear stellar disks hosted by three early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster, NGC 4458, NGC4478, and NGC4570. We aimed at constraining the process of formation of their stars. The central surface brightness, scale length, inclination, and position angle of the nuclear disks were derived by adopting the photometric decomposition method introduced by Scorza & Bender and assuming the disks to be infinitesimally thin and exponential. The location, orientation, and size of the nuclear disks is the same in all the images obtained with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 and Advanced Camera for Survey and available in the HST Science Archive. The scale length, inclination, and position angle of each disk are constant within the errors in the observed U, B, V, and I passbands, independently of their values and of the properties of the host spheroid. We interpret the absence of color gradients in the stellar population of the nuclear disks as the signature that star formation homogeneously occurred all through their extension. We present a preliminary analysis of the HI properties of early-type galaxies in the ATLAS3D sample. Using WSRT data for ~100 galaxies outside the Virgo cluster and data from the Alfalfa project for galaxies inside Virgo, we discuss the dependence of HI properties on environment. We detect HI in about half of the galaxies outside Virgo. For these systems, the HI morphology and kinematics change as a function of environment, going from regular, rotating systems around isolated galaxies to progressively more disturbed structures for galaxies with neighbours or in groups. In denser environment, inside Virgo, nearly none of the galaxies contains HI. We discuss future work in this field which will be enabled by next-generation, pre-SKA radio instruments. We combine SAURON integral field data of a representative sample of local early-type, red sequence galaxies with Spitzer/IRAC imaging in order to investigate the presence of trace star formation in these systems. With the Spitzer data, we identify galaxies hosting low-level star formation, as traced by PAH emission, with measured star formation rates that compare well to those estimated from other tracers. This star formation proceeds according to established scaling relations with molecular gas content, in surface density regimes characteristic of disk galaxies and circumnuclear starbursts. We find that star formation in early-type galaxies happens exclusively in fast-rotating systems and occurs in two distinct modes. In the first, star formation is a diffuse process, corresponding to widespread young stellar populations and high molecular gas content. The equal presence of co- and counter-rotating components in these systems strongly implies an external origin for the star-forming gas, and we argue that these star formation events may be the final stages of (mostly minor) mergers that build up the bulges of red sequence lenticulars. In the second mode of star formation, the process is concentrated into well-defined disk or ring morphologies, outside of which the host galaxies exhibit uniformly evolved stellar populations. This implies that these star formation events represent rejuvenations within previously quiescent stellar systems. Evidence for earlier star formation events similar to these in all fast rotating early-type galaxies suggests that this mode of star formation may be common to all such galaxies, with a duty cycle of roughly 1/10, and likely contributes to the embedded, co-rotating inner stellar disks ubiquitous in this population., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 48 pages, 36 figures. Following the study of Darg et al. (2009; hereafter D09a) we explore the environments, optical colours, stellar masses, star formation and AGN activity in a sample of 3003 pairs of merging galaxies drawn from the SDSS using visual classifications from the Galaxy Zoo project. While D09a found that the spiral-to-elliptical ratio in (major) mergers appeared higher than that of the global galaxy population, no significant differences are found between the environmental distributions of mergers and a randomly selected control sample. This makes the high occurrence of spirals in mergers unlikely to be an environmental effect and must, therefore, arise from differing time-scales of detectability for spirals and ellipticals. We find that merging galaxies have a wider spread in colour than the global galaxy population, with a significant blue tail resulting from intense star formation in spiral mergers. Galaxies classed as star-forming using their emission-line properties have average star-formation rates approximately doubled by the merger process though star formation is negligibly enhanced in merging elliptical galaxies. We conclude that the internal properties of galaxies significantly affect the time-scales over which merging systems can be detected (as suggested by recent theoretical studies) which leads to spirals being `over-observed' in mergers. We also suggest that the transition mass $3\times10^{10}{M}_{\astrosun}$, noted by \citet{kauffmann1}, below which ellipticals are rare could be linked to disc survival/destruction in mergers., Comment: Second of two papers on SDSS mergers. We present the largest, most homogeneous catalogue of merging galaxies in the nearby universe obtained through the Galaxy Zoo project - an interface on the world-wide web enabling large-scale morphological classification of galaxies through visual inspection of images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The method converts a set of visually-inspected classifications for each galaxy into a single parameter (the `weighted-merger-vote fraction,' $f_m$) which describes our confidence that the system is part of an ongoing merger. We describe how $f_m$ is used to create a catalogue of 3003 visually-selected pairs of merging galaxies from the SDSS in the redshift range $0.005 < z <0.1$. We use our merger sample and values of $f_m$ applied to the SDSS Main Galaxy Spectral sample (MGS) to estimate that the fraction of volume-limited ($M_r < -20.55$) major mergers ($1/3 < {M}^*_1/{M}^*_2 < 3$) in the nearby universe is $1 - 3 \times C%$ where $C \sim 1.5$ is a correction factor for spectroscopic incompleteness. Having visually classified the morphologies of the constituent galaxies in our mergers, we find that the spiral-to-elliptical ratio of galaxies in mergers is higher by a factor $\sim 2$ relative to the global population. Based on the modeling of the central emission-line width measured over sub-arcsecond apertures with the Hubble Space Telescope, we present stringent upper bounds on the mass of the central supermassive black hole, MBH, for a sample of 105 nearby galaxies (D<100Mpc) spanning a wide range of Hubble types (E-Sc) and values of the central stellar velocity dispersion, sigma (58-419km/s). For the vast majority of the objects the derived MBH upper limits run parallel and above the well-known MBH-sigma relation independently of the galaxy distance, suggesting that our nebular line-width measurements trace rather well the nuclear gravitational potential. For values of sigma between 90 and 220km/s the 68% of our upper limits falls immediately above the MBH-sigma relation without exceeding the expected MBH values by more than a factor 4.1. No systematic trends or offsets are observed in this sigma range as a function of the galaxy Hubble type or with respect to the presence of a bar. For 6 of our 12 MBH upper limits with sigma<90km/s our line-width measurements are more sensitive to the stellar contribution to the gravitational potential, either due to the presence of a nuclear stellar cluster or because of a greater distance compared to the other galaxies at the low-sigma end of the MBH-sigma relation. Conversely, our MBH upper bounds appear to lie closer to the expected MBH in the most massive elliptical galaxies with values of sigma above 220km/s. Such a flattening of the MBH-sigma relation at its high-sigma end would appear consistent with a coevolution of supermassive black holes and galaxies driven by dry mergers, although better and more consistent measurements for sigma and K-band luminosity are needed for these kind of objects before systematic effects can be ruled out., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication on ApJ. We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging and spectroscopic observations of three Brightest Cluster Galaxies, Abell 1836-BCG, Abell 2052-BCG, and Abell 3565-BCG, obtained with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The data provide detailed information on the structure and mass profile of the stellar component, the dust optical depth, and the spatial distribution and kinematics of the ionized gas within the innermost region of each galaxy. Dynamical models, which account for the observed stellar mass profile and include the contribution of a central supermassive black hole (SBH), are constructed to reproduce the kinematics derived from the Halpha and [N II](lambda 6548,6583) emission lines. Secure SBH detection with M_bh=3.61(+0.41,-0.50)x10^9 M_sun and M_bh=1.34(+0.21,-0.19)x10^9 M_sun, respectively, are obtained for Abell 1836-BCG and Abell 3565-BCG, which show regular rotation curves and strong central velocity gradients. In the case of Abell 2052-BCG, the lack of an orderly rotational motion prevents a secure determination, although an upper limit of M_bh < 4.60x10^9 M_sun can be placed on the mass of the central SBH. Photometry and long-slit spectroscopy are presented for 14 S0 and spiral galaxies of the Fornax, Eridanus and Pegasus cluster, and NGC 7582 group. The structural parameters of the galaxies are derived from the R-band images by performing a two-dimensional photometric decomposition of the surface-brightness distribution. This is assumed to be the sum of the contribution of a bulge and disc component characterized by elliptical and concentric isophotes with constant (but possibly different) ellipticity and position angles. The rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles are measured from the spectra obtained along the major axis of galaxies. The radial profiles of the Hb, Mg, and Fe line-strength indices are presented too. Correlations between the central values of Mgd, , Hb, and sigma are found. The age, metallicity and alpha/Fe enhancement of the stellar population in the center and at the radius where bulge and disc give the same contribution to the total surface brightness are obtained using stellar population models with variable element abundance ratios. Three classes of bulges are identified. The youngest bulges (~2 Gyr) with ongoing star formation, intermediate-age bulges (4-8 Gyr) have solar metallicity, and old bulges (~10 Gyr) have high metallicity. Most of the sample bulges display solar alpha/Fe enhancement, no gradient in age, and a negative gradient of metallicity. The presence of negative gradient in the metallicity radial profile favors a scenario with bulge formation via dissipative collapse. (abridged) Photometry and long-slit spectroscopy are presented for a sample of 6 galaxies with a low surface brightness stellar disc and a bulge. The stellar and ionised-gas kinematics were measured along the major and minor axis in half of the sample galaxies, whereas the other half was observed only along two diagonal axes. Spectra along two diagonal axes were obtained also for one of the objects with major and minor axis spectra. The kinematic measurements extend in the disc region out to a surface-brightness level mu_R~24mag/arcsec^2 reaching in all cases the flat part of the rotation curve. The stellar kinematics turns out to be more regular and symmetric than the ionised-gas kinematics, which often shows the presence of non-circular, off-plane, and non-ordered motions. This raises the question about the reliability of the use of the ionised gas as the tracer of the circular velocity in the modeling of the mass distribution, in particular in the central regions of low surface brightness galaxies., Comment: Accepted for pubblication on MNRAS (11 figures and 15 tables)
