Aging infrastructures require huge budgets to preserve their functionality and the lack of effective maintenance leads to increasing deterioration and therefore higher repair costs. For these reasons, assessing the condition of infrastructures becomes mandatory, with particular attention to the ones still in service even when their life limit has been exceeded. In particular, this problem is really important in Countries, like Italy, in which there are several operating bridges at the end of their service life. In this framework, many companies responsible for the management of road networks have turned their interest towards Bridge Management Systems (BMS). This paper presents a fast and low‐cost method for condition rating of reinforced concrete bridges. The proposal is based on visual inspection and non‐destructive testing. A specific parameter is designed to take into account the mechanical degradation of materials and the damage location at the structural sub‐component level. Within this work, the causes of collapses and damages occurred in masonry artefacts have been evaluated to properly identify suitable monitoring and restoration methods. In this regard, a comprehensive literature review has been performed. Based on the results, moisture has been found to be a critical parameter, that affects the structural health of masonry artefacts. Various non-destructive methods were employed to measure moisture and monitor the materials involved, including Infrared Thermography, Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Ground Penetrating Radar, Laser Scanning and Digital Terrestrial Photogrammetry, Global Navigation Satellite Systems, Unilateral Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Laser-Induced Fluorescence technique, Acoustic Imaging and Acoustic Tomography, Geographic Information System, on-site survey process and computer modeling of the structure with specific FEM software. Finally, the implementation of tie-beams, Fiber Reinforced Polymers layers, ventilation, draining systems, and high-quality materials are proposed as solutions for controlling the moisture effect and retrofitting. Recent failures in road networks highlight their vulnerability towards natural hazards, particularly to extreme weather events. This paper proposes a method to evaluate the safety of road networks in case of collapse of one or more bridges. In addition, relevant consequences in terms of safety of human life, direct and indirect cost are crucial aspects to consider. The framework described here is based on the knowledge of road and river network, of the individual bridges and of the traffic data. However, this approach can be generalized in case of interruption of road network due to other causes. An algorithm has been developed to extract traffic data from Google and elaborate it throughout a procedure based on the application of the USA Highway Capacity Manual. This consents to have a quantitative definition of the road traffic directly from the users and to get updated traffic data. The maps are processed throughout a GIS software and, thanks to the application of a routing algorithm and proper constraints, it is possible to evaluate the effects of the interruption of one or more bridges. The consequences are evaluated in terms of drivers’ delay and time cost. This provides useful information about priority of intervention with the aim of proposing to stakeholders a suitable instrument for disaster prevention and management.

A plane elastic-plastic solid body presenting kinematic hardening is used to simulate a pair of dampers at the base of a rigid structure and determine the energy dissipation under conditions of assigned, homogeneous cyclic loading. The well-known von Mises theory of plasticity is applied with the aim of obtaining analytical solutions to the problem. Such solutions are arrived at by first calculating the Odqvist parameter, which yields dimensionless relations that depend on the external loads and mechanical properties of the material. The results, in terms of dissipated energy, are given for the case of a sinusoidal process, represented with the help of dimensionless parameters useful for engineering applications.
