Abstract

These novel features are not seen in the prior scalp biopsy specimen, expanding the histopathological description of alopecia in HMD. Only a single scalp biopsy specimen, also taken by shave technique, has been reported in the literature.1 This biopsy specimen demonstrated parakeratosis and dyskeratosis within follicular infundibula with overlying crust.1 Our specimen shows the epidermal features described in other HMD skin biopsy specimens. Scalp punch biopsies with vertical and horizontal sectioning from additional HMD patients would be optimal for further characterization of alopecia in HMD, including histopathological determination of scarring vs non-scarring etiology. Microphthalmia and linear skin defects syndrome (MLS) is a rare X‐linked dominant disorder characterized by microphthalmia and linear atrophic plaques of the face and neck. The diagnosis of MLS can be challenging secondary to both its rarity and to clinical overlap with Goltz syndrome.
