Although epidemiological studies of the relationship between cigarette smoking and colorectal cancer risk have been equivocal, a positive association is consistently found for colorectal adenoma development. We performed an epidemiological study to determine whether p53 protein overexpression, in tumours obtained at the time of resection, is associated with cigarette exposure in colorectal cancer. A total of 163 colorectal cancer cases and 326 healthy controls responded to a standardised questionnaire on colorectal cancer risk factors including detailed information on their history of cigarette smoking. All patients' tumours were analysed immunohistochemically for p53 overexpression using an avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase procedure and polyclonal anti-p53 antibody CM1. Comparison of colorectal cases with controls revealed an elevated risk for ex-smokers (OR = 1.34, 95% CI 0.85-2.12) and current smokers (OR = 1.13, 95% CI 0.63-2.02) when compared with non-smokers. No dose-response relationship was found for total pack-years of smoking (trend test: P = 0.19). However, a trend for total pack-years of smoking was found when p53-positive cases were compared with p53-negative cases suggesting aetiological, heterogeneity (trend test: P = 0.06). Estimating the individual relative risk of developing a p53-positive tumour relative to controls showed no associations for smoking status or total pack-years of smoking. However, when p53-negative cases were compared with controls, an elevated risk was found for ex-smokers (OR = 1.84, 95% CI 1.00-3.37) and current years of smoking (trend test: P = 0.03). Colorectal tumours developing through p53-positive dependent pathways were not associated with smoking exposure. A significant increase in risk was observed for the p53-negative independent pathway with smoking. p53 overexpression appears to be associated with smoking exposure in colorectal cancer.

This electronmicroscope study of the histogenesis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma is based on 15 cases from the major and minor salivary glands. Six major cell types were identified: undifferentiated (cuboid) stem cells, intermediate (columnar) ceils, serous/mucoid secretory cells, mucus-producing goblet ceils. squamous/epidermoid cells and myoepithelium It is proposed that undifferentiated stein ceils serve as pluripotential reserves which give rise to the various cell types seen in mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Reserve cells in the acinar-intercalated duct components of the salivary glands appeared to give rise to the serous/mucoid and myoepithelial cell populations of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Reserve cells in the proximal ducts system (intra/extralobular striated ducts and excretory ducts) differentiated into myoepithelium. intermediate (columnar) cells, squamous/epidermoid and mucus-producing goblet cell lines, It is proposed that neoplastic reserve cells give rise to different tumor types in the salivary glands. These types result from varying admixtures and arrangements of tumor cells at different stages of their structural and functional cytodifferentiation from reserve cells. It is further proposed that neoplastic reserve cells differentiate along similar cell lines as the embryonic "stem cells" in the development of normal salivary glands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Presence of colors, organic surface finishing agents and surfactants in textile industry effluent makes it highly detrimental for surrounding environment. Hence the effluent from textile industry needs treatment for removal of these colors, organic and inorganic components before its disposal. Hence applicability of low cost and environmental friendly biosorbents, Azospirillium biofertilizer and Rhizobium biofertilizer were investigated for removal of Congo red dye. Batch experimentation was carried out to check operating parameters like, temperature, dose of adsorbent, pH, agitation speed, contact time and initial concentration. The biosorption capacity for Congo red dye was 67.114 and 101.01 mg/g, for Azospirillium biofertilizer and Rhizobium biofertilizer, respectively at optimized parameters. R L factor was 0.558 and 0.568 for Azospirillium biofertilizer and Rhizobium biofertilizer. The data showed combination of interaction-based separation through better fitting of Langmuir isotherm compared to Freundlich. Its separation is well described by Pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion model. Adsorption was favorable at lower temperature suggesting exothermic and spontaneous nature. Reusability for Azospirillium biofertilizer and Rhizobium biofertilizer was checked for 25 mg/land. Aims/objective: Influence of genetic variations on the response of clopidogrel, an antiplatelet drug is implicated. In the present study, the prevalence of single nucleotide polymorphisms of MDR1 (C3435T), CYP2C19 [CYP2C19*2 CYP2C19*3, CYP2C19*17] and P2Y12 (i-T744C) in Indian population and their effects on clopidogrel response was analyzed., Methods and Results: To analyze the prevalence of polymorphisms, 102 healthy individuals were recruited. Clopidogrel response was assessed by ADP induced platelet aggregation in clopidogrel naïve acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients (n = 26) screened from 100 AMI cases, before loading dose of 300 mg, at 24 h before next dose and 6 days after on 75 mg per day and platelet aggregation inhibition (PAI) was calculated between these time intervals. Genotyping was carried out by PCR-based restriction enzyme digestion method for C3435T of MDR1 and i-T744C of P2Y12, by multiplex PCR for CYP2C19*2 (G681A) and CYP2C19*3 (G636A) and by nested PCR for CYP2C19*17 (C806T). The effect of the above mentioned genetic variations on PAI was analyzed. Variant allele of CYP2C19*3 was not observed while the prevalence of 3435T of MDR1 (0.524), CYP2C19*2 (681A, 0.352); i-744C of P2Y12 (0.088), as well as wild type allele CYP2C19*17 (C806, 0.897) associated with decrease clopidogrel response were observed. Trend toward poor response to clopidogrel was observed at 24 h with the variant genotypes of CYP2C19*2 and i-T744C of P2Y12 as compared to wild type., Conclusion: The present study did show a trend toward impaired response of clopidogrel to inhibit platelet aggregation with variant genotypes of CYP2C19*2 and iT744C of P2Y12 compared to respective wild type genotype at 24 h., (Copyright © 2013 Cardiological Society of India. Sorghum, an ancient old-world cereal grass, is the dietary staple of over 500 million people in more than 30 countries in the tropics and semitropics. Its C4 photosynthesis, drought resistance, wide adaptation, and high nutritional value hold the promise to alleviate hunger in Africa. Not present in other major cereals, such as rice, wheat, and maize, condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) in the pigmented testa of some sorghum cultivars have been implicated in reducing protein digestibility but recently have been shown to promote human health because of their high antioxidant capacity and ability to fight obesity through reduced digestion. Combining quantitative trait locus mapping, meta-quantitative trait locus fine-mapping, and association mapping, we showed that the nucleotide polymorphisms in the Tan1 gene, coding a WD40 protein, control the tannin biosynthesis in sorghum. A 1-bp G deletion in the coding region, causing a frame shift and a premature stop codon, led to a nonfunctional allele, tan1-a. Likewise, a different 10-bp insertion resulted in a second nonfunctional allele, tan1-b. Transforming the sorghum Tan1 ORF into a nontannin Arabidopsis mutant restored the tannin phenotype. In addition, reduction in nucleotide diversity from wild sorghum accessions to landraces and cultivars was found at the region that codes the highly conserved WD40 repeat domains and the C-terminal region of the protein. Genetic research in crops, coupled with nutritional and medical research, could open the possibility of producing different levels and combinations of phenolic compounds to promote human health.

Aims/objective: Over expression of matrix degrading enzymes have been implicated in plaque destabilisation and rupture. Cathepsins associated with extracellular matrix breakdown make them intriguing suspects. The aim of the study was to analyse peripheral levels of cathepsin B and cathepsin K and their inhibitor cystatin C during acute myocardial infarction (AMI)., Materials and Methods: Study population included AMI patients at acute event (AMI group, n=48), stable angina patients (stable angina group n = 17), and healthy individuals (Control group, n=31). Cathepsin B, cathepsin K, cystatin C, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-9 were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method., Results: Cathepsin B (45.9%) and cathepsin K (92.31%) at acute event of myocardial infarction (AMI group) increased (P=0.001) while cystatin C decreased marginally (12.5%) as compared to controls. Stable angina group, demonstrated only marginal reduction in all the parameters studied as compared to controls., Conclusion: Cathepsin B and cathepsin K can be further evaluated as biomarkers in identifying high-risk individuals for AMI., (Copyright © 2012 Cardiological Society of India. Platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) has role in atherosclerotic plaque development as well as in thrombosis leading to myocardial infarction (MI). Present study was aimed to analyse the association of PECAM-1 Leu125Val gene polymorphism with MI in Indian population. Subjects included healthy individuals as control (N = 116) and MI patients (N = 100) divided into two groups; MI patients at presentation of the acute event (MI-Group-1, N = 46) and patients with recent event of MI stabilized with treatment 4.5 days from their symptoms (MI-Group-2, N = 54). The difference in the distribution of Leu125Val genotype frequencies of controls and patients did not reach statistical significance. However Leu allele frequency (0.57) was more associated with MI patients as compared to control (0.504). sPECAM-1 levels were significantly elevated in patients at acute event of MI (MI-Group-1) by 44.1% (P = 0.009) as compared to controls and by 95.2% (P = 0.001) as compared to stabilized MI patients (MI-Group-2).

We describe a procedure to promote angiogenesis and impregnation of skeletal myoblast into infarcted myocardium. At the completion of coronary artery bypass surgery, the midline sternotomy incision was extended to open the abdomen, and the greater omentum was tailored to reach the myocardium. Four pieces of autologous rectus muscle were applied to the infarcted left ventricle. This implantation was reinforced by the greater omentum. Incisions were closed in the usual manner. Postoperatively, the patient showed significant improvements in left ventricular ejection fraction (from 0.15 to 0.40) and in exercise tolerance (from 3 METs to 6 METs, or 100%). Computed tomographic angiography and positron emission tomography demonstrated improved myocardial viability and vascularity in the ischemic segments of the left ventricle. Omentopexy and cell patch cardiomyoplasty in conjunction with coronary artery bypass surgery may stimulate myogenesis and angiogenesis in avascular, dyskinetic scar tissue of left ventricle; in this preliminary study, this procedure appeared to improve the functional capacity of the left ventricle.

Purpose: The purpose of this communication is to report a case of anal duct/gland cyst and review cases of perianal and presacrococcygeal mucus-secreting cysts reported in the literature with emphasis on their histopathologic features., Method: Our patient presented with coccydynia. An extraluminal retrorectal tumor was felt on rectal examination. A computerized tomographic scan demonstrated a presacrococcygeal mass closely related to the anorectal junction. The tumor and the coccyx were excised using a posterior approach. Cases of perianal and presacrococcygeal mucus-secreting cysts reported in the literature were reviewed., Results: In our case, the tumor proved to be an anal duct/gland cyst. Some of the reported cases of presacrococcygeal glandular cysts had histopathologic features suggestive of anal duct/gland origin., Conclusion: Diagnosis of anal duct/gland cyst is based on routine histologic features, histochemical characteristics of mucus, and/or the presence of a communication with an anal duct or crypt. Based on these criteria, some of the reported cases of mucus-secreting cysts occurring around the anorectum may prove to be anal duct/gland in origin.

Conclusions: Desmoid tumors may rarely develop at the site of an unrelated surgical procedure. This is an index description of a desmoid tumor occurring at the line of a pancreatic resection. Because sporadic intra-abdominal desmoids are markedly less prone to recurrence than genetically determined desmoids, it is reasonable to suggest re-resection for the infrequent recurrence in sporadic cases., Background: Intra-abdominal desmoid tumors are infrequently encountered in surgical practice and, when seen, are most often those genetically determined tumors associated with Gardner's Syndrome or familial polyposis. In contrast, fewer than 100 cases of sporadic intra-abdominal desmoid tumors have been reported; only 16 of these sporadic tumors have occurred at the site of a previous surgical procedure. The current report describes a case of sporadic desmoid tumor that developed at the pancreatic suture line 18 mo following distal pancreatectomy for a nonsecreting islet cell tumor., Methods: An extensive literature search was focused on desmoid tumors in general, and sporadic intra-abdominal desmoids in particular., Results: During the course of this collective review, it was noted that the high rate of postoperative recurrence for intra-abdominal desmoids in genetically determined cases differed markedly from the low rate of recurrence after section of sporadic tumors.

Although familial and dietary factors are recognized as important risk determinants for colorectal tumorigenesis, the specific causes of colorectal cancer remain unclear. Studies of p53 genetic alterations have provided clues concerning the etiology of many cancers. This study was designed to determine whether overexpression of the p53 protein is associated with familial and dietary risk factors. Epidemiological data were obtained from 163 colorectal cancer cases and 326 healthy controls. Tumors of all patients were analyzed immunohistochemically for p53 overexpression using an avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase procedure and polyclonal anti-p53 antibody CM1. Of patient tumors, 44.8% showed p53 nuclear reactivity. Colorectal cases versus controls were three times more likely to report a family history of colorectal cancer [odds ratio (OR), 3.12; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.77-5.52]. Only cruciferous vegetables exhibited a significant inverse association (OR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.34-1.02; trend test, P = 0.03) for the highest versus lowest quartiles. Both meat and beef displayed an elevated increase in risk. When cases with p53 overexpression (p53 positive) were compared with cases without p53 overexpression (p53 negative), etiological heterogeneity was suggested for family history of colorectal cancer (OR, 0.39; 95% CI, 0.16-0.93), cruciferous vegetables (trend test, P = 0.12), and beef consumption (trend test, P = 0.08). To estimate the individual relative risks for p53-dependent and p53-independent pathways, each p53 subtype was compared with controls. Cruciferous vegetables exhibited a significant association (OR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.17-0.82; trend test, P = 0.03) when p53 positive cases were compared with controls. When p53 negative cases were compared with controls, a significant increase in risk was observed for family history of cancer (OR, 4.46; 95% CI, 2.36-8.43) and beef (OR, 3.17; 95% CI, 1.83-11.28; trend test, P = 0.006). The p53 (positive) dependent pathway was characterized by an inverse association with cruciferous vegetables, and p53-independent tumors were characterized by family history and beef consumption. These data may indicate the significance of linking epidemiology and molecular biology in assessing specific etiological pathways.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the colon and rectum, originating proximal to the transitional zone, is a rare complication of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IIBD). To date there are only 15 single case reports of such an occurrence. This carcinoma develops more commonly in females and in patients with pancolonic disease of more than 8 years' duration. The rectum is affected in two thirds of the cases. Squamous cell changes, in the vicinity of the primary adenocarcinoma, are present in 27% of cases. The carcinoma is in a pathologically advanced stage in one third of the cases. Colectomy is the main therapeutic modality. Survival following surgical resection ranged from 7 months to 21 years. We present an additional case of rectal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) complicating chronic ulcerative colitis in a 33-year-old woman who had the disease for 15 years. Multiple biopsies of a gross lesion located 5 cm above the dendate line were consistent with invasive basaloid cell carcinoma. The patient received 5-FU, mitomycin C, and radiotherapy prior to a proctocolectomy and ileostomy. The only histopathologic finding at pathologic review of the surgical specimen was severe squamous dysplasia.

We believe we report the first case of malignant juxtadrenal schwannoma. This rare tumor was discovered incidentally in a patient who presented with fever, mental confusion, weight loss, leukocytosis, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Preoperative radiographic and endocrine evaluations were suggestive of a nonfunctioning adrenal tumor. Its suprarenal location was unequivocally demonstrated by CT scan, sonography, angiography, and magnetic resonance imaging studies. Angiography revealed that the tumor derived its blood supply from the adrenal and renal vessels. The final diagnosis and its juxtadrenal origin was confirmed by histologic and immunohistochemical studies. A review of the literature on retroperitoneal schwannoma is included.

Typhlitis caused by Balantidium coli and requiring surgical resection occurred in three captive lowland gorillas over a 30-month period. Not one of the other gorillas in the colony or their keepers was ill. B. coli is distributed widely geographically and widely among mammals. Asymptomatic commensalism predominates, but invasion of the colonic mucosa can produce diarrhea and dysentery and set the stage for local or systemic spread.

Corneal intraepithelial neoplasia is an uncommon entity that may recur with potential for local invasive growth. Disease severity ranges from mild to severe dysplasia, the latter representing intraepithelial carcinoma in situ. Our case focuses on the importance of the neighboring bulbar conjunctiva in promoting recurrence of the corneal pathology. Over eight years, there were recurrences after debridement. After removal of grossly normal but histologically dysplastic bulbar conjunctival mucosa bordering the evident corneal process, successful control was achieved. There has been no recurrence for five years.

A case of papillary renal cell carcinoma with clinical and angiographic features of an abscess is reported. Papillary renal carcinomas constitute 14% of renal adenocarcinomas. These tumors have slower growth rate and better prognosis.

This study describes the light microscopic, histochemical and electron-microscopic findings of 10 acinic cell carcinomas from the major and minor salivary glands. Ultrastructurally, four cell types were identified: secretory acinar cells, intercalated duct-like cells, pluripotential reserve/stem cells and myoepithelial cells. This cellular composition suggests that the tumours are derived from neoplastic proliferation, cytodifferentiation and functional maturation of pluripotential reserve/stem cells which normally reside at the acinar-intercalated duct junctions and/or in the intercalated ducts proper of adult salivary glands. This study further supports the concept that different salivary gland tumours recapitulate various developmental stages in the normal embryogenesis of the salivary glands.

Carcinomas arising in fibroadenomas are rare. Two such cases are being presented; one is of the ductal variety and the other, lobular. Both cases clearly demonstrate the overall configuration of fibroadenomas with foci of in situ and infiltrating carcinoma, the surrounding breast tissue being devoid of malignant changes. The diagnosis was clinically unsuspected in both cases and in only one of them was it suspected at the time of gross pathological examination. The intent of this presentation is to increase general awareness as to the existence of carcinomas arising in fibroadenomas and also to actively discourage the practice of rendering gross pathological diagnoses of fibroadenomas at table diagnosis, however innocuous these neoplasms may appear to be, without microscopic examination by frozen sections.

An asymptomatic renal oncocytoma was found in the upper left quadrant of an eighty-five-year-old woman during a routine physical examination. Ultrastructurally, the tumor was composed entirely of epithelial cells filled with normal and abnormal mitochondria. Selective renal angiography showed two renal arteries supplying a lobulated, highly vascular mass. The mass contained irregular and tortuous vessels without any arteriovenous shunting.

A case is reported of hypertrophic gastropathy with characteristic clinical endoscopic and histologic features who presented with massive gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to arterio-venous malformation. Since the course of this disease is not favorable with medical treatment, an operation should be done for patients with life threatening complications and intractable symptoms. Subtotal gastrectomy was found to be satisfactory for patients with limited disease and total gastrectomy for patients with diffuse disease.

This investigation deals with the histogenesis of the so-called 'epimyoepithelial islands' in Mikulicz's disease of the major salivary glands and is based on light and electron microscopic study in six patients. The 'epimyoepithelial islands' represent collapsed acini prior to their complete involution and disappearance, the intraductal cellular proliferation, stratification and differentiation into luminal and peripheral myoepithelial cells with partial and complete obliteration of their lumina and finally, cord-like proliferation and formation of nests of residual pluripotential cells showing squamous metaplasia and occasional myoepithelial cell differentiation. A pink, homogeneous and hyaline material on light microscopic examination is multilayered and extracellular and is in close association with the basal lamina when viewed with electron microscope.

The clinico-pathologic aspects of 15 cases of microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva are analyzed and the literature on this subject is reviewed. Three patients in this group and 12.5% of the 279 reported cases, all with 5 mm or less depth of invasion, have had lymph node metastases and/or recurrences or have ultimately died of their disease. The prognostic value of lymphatic/vascular permeation, the degree of cellular anaplasia, the pattern as well as the depth of invasion, all have been alluded to, and the latter is popularized. It is noted, however, that the arbitrarily chosen 3 or 5 mm depth of invasion alone does not allow for consistent identification of individuals with a negligible risk for groin lymph node metastasis. There is indeed documentation of nodal metastases in 20 of 178 (11%) of the reported cases with 1-3.5 mm invasion. It is suggested that the level of invasion, as determined by Clark's classification, which provides a histologic reference point, may correlate better with the incidence of groin nodal metastasis, and its use may allow for individualized therapy and eventually aid in identifying cases of microinvasive carcinoma of the vulva that could safely be treated without lymphadenectomy.

A monomorphic adenoma (ductal type) of the palatal minor salivary glands is reported. Ultrastructurally, the predominant tumor cells contained zymogenlike dense secretory granules. There was a continuum from tumor cells with little or no secretory granules to ones with increasing numbers of granules. Except for that, the tumor cells shared many of their fine structural features. Histogenetically, the tumor originated from neoplastic proliferations of "undifferentiated" stem cells corresponding to "end-bud" stage of salivary glands embryogenesis. Under neoplastic influences, such cells underwent further cytodifferentiation and functional maturation along the secretory cell lines. In mature salivary glands, such pluripotential cells reside as "reserve" cells in the intercalated ducts.

We analyzed the clinicopathologic aspects of 19 cases of actinomycosis associated with intrauterine devices (IUDs) seen and treated at hospitals affiliated with the State University of New York at Buffalo between 1972 and 1982. Clinical manifestations included the following: (1) asymptomatic IUD-associated Actinomyces colonization, (2) endocervicitis, (3) endometritis, (4) endometritis with salpingitis and/or tuboovarian abscesses and (5) abdominopelvic abscesses. No consistent relationship was found between the total peripheral lymphocyte count and/or degree of histologic lymphocytic reaction and the clinical picture. Abnormal uterine bleeding and/or discharge, pain, fever and abdominopelvic masses were among the symptoms and signs encountered. Patients with endocervicitis and/or endometritis responded to removal of the IUD, dilatation and curettage and antibiotic therapy for two to four weeks. Those who developed abscesses were treated successfully with surgical drainage and added antibiotic treatment.

A case of malakoplakia of the supraclavicular region and colon in a 41-year-old patient is presented. Clinical, histopathological, histochemical and ultrastructural features are described. The etiology and pathogenesis are discussed. Malakoplakia is a chronic inflammatory disorder probably due to an abnormal response to infection with Gram negative bacteria, most likely Escherichia coli or Klebsiella. The disease is characterised by the accumulation of macrophages intermixed with plasma cells and lymphocytes. The malakoplakic cells are laden with phagolysosomes which may provide a suitable biochemical environment for the deposition of calcium to form the pathognomonic Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. Ultrastructural examination enhances the accuracy of diagnosis since it highlights the presence of lysosomes, phagolysosomes, Michaelis-Gutmann bodies, and intact E. coli or their remnants.

Six cell lines were established from four patients with advanced carcinoma of the ovary and from one patient with carcinoma of the endometrium. These lines were established from fresh tumor material maintained initially on culture dishes coated with an extracellular matrix (ECM) produced by bovine corneal endothelial cells. Two of the six lines continue to require ECM as a substrate for optimal growth while the remaining four lines will proliferate on ECM or plastic substrate. Four cell lines transplanted into athymic nude mice were tumorigenic and maintained histologic and karyotypic similarities between the patient's original tumor, the cell line, and the transplantable tumor. Furthermore, in vitro degradation of ECM was grossly apparent by those cell lines which formed nude mice xenografts. Tumor cells were characterized by cytology, transmission electron microscopy, karyology, substrate requirements, steroid binding protein analysis, and morphological appearance in culture.

Transcatheter embolization of the middle colic artery for diverticular bleeding was followed by ischemic necrosis in the transverse colon at the site of previous anastomosis and stricture formation. This is a potential complication of intra-arterial embolization for colonic bleeding.

Polypoid epithelial tumors of the duodenum and ampulla of Vater are rarely diagnosed preoperatively without wide application of fiberoptic endoscopy. The symptoms are nonspecific. Only a high index of suspicion will lead to early diagnosis. Life-threatening complications and increased incidence of malignant transformations are associated with delayed diagnosis. This paper reviews 11 patients (nine previously unreported) with villous tumor of the ampulla of Vater and two with this neoplasm in the duodenum. It also reviews the important principles of management illustrated by the behavior of the tumors of these 11 patients compared to those of previous reports. For favorable results, all lesions must be excised in toto and evidence of invasive malignancy must lead to aggressive treatment whenever feasible.

Four cases of advanced stage (II or III) and one case of early stage (IC) borderline malignant serous cystadenocarcinomas of the ovary were maintained on culture dishes coated with an extracellular matrix (ECM) produced by bovine corneal endothelial cells. Cells harvested for chromosomal analysis after 2-3 days showed diploid or near-diploid modalities in all cases. Banded chromosome studies in two cases revealed nonrandom clonal abnormalities with trisomy 2, 7, and 12 in seven of 13 metaphases. No structural abnormalities were noted. These cytogenetic findings differ from those found in malignant serous tumors of the ovary. In addition, borderline tumor cells digested the ECM in all cases and formed a cribiform pattern within a few days of primary culture. This study suggests clonal progression from early to advanced stages of borderline malignant serous tumors; readily distinguishable from overtly malignant serous tumors of the ovary. Ability of tumor cells derived from both primary tumors and metastatic implants to digest the ECM implies the possibility that borderline serous tumors have invasive potential.
