Abstract

Our objective is to develop an analysis concept in order to measure the in situ estimation of state parameter, such as water content, during smouldering of waste and sand mixtures. High frequency electromagnetic (HF EM) method presents a high potential for the quantitative estimation of state parameter in porous media. However, it provides indirect measurement: the major challenge is to derive robust relationship between the performed measured permittivity and the parameter under interest. Thus, laboratory measurement of dielectric properties of waste and sand mixtures under controlled boundary are urgently needed. In this preliminary study, the relative effective complex permittivity of artificial faeces was studied over the 50°MHz–3°GHz frequency range with network analyzer technique in combination with homemade open ended coaxial method. In a first step, the effect of water content on dielectric properties was investigated. The results have shown an important dispersion for the imaginary part which can be related to interface process and a systematic increase of the permittivity with water content. In a second step, a shrinking test was monitored with the homemade probe. The relative complex permittivity shows a nonlinear evolution with gravimetric water content and show marked transitions during the decrease of water content. The results of combined investigations have shown the potential of HF EM techniques for quantitative monitoring of the hydraulic state of waste and sand mixtures during smouldering combustion.

Abstract

Security and error control coding are two crucial aspects of the digital communication systems. The deployment of data transmission systems easy to eavesdrop, such as wireless systems, makes strategic the protection of the data secrecy. This paper presents an encryption scheme based on the dynamic observation of the reciprocal propagation channel between the legitimate nodes. A “session key”, generated from the Complex Impulse Response (CIR) measurements, manages the channel coding system, namely a turbo-code. This scheme allows to jointly perform an error control and dynamic coding in only one step. This scheme allows a dynamic security coding without change of the hardware structure of the transceiver devices.

Abstract

This paper deals with modeling in electromagnetism in the field of eddy current for Non Destructive Evaluation. Several techniques could be used to diagnose structural damages. In eddy current application, a magnetic field generates by an excitation coil (or primary coil), interacts with a conductive target and generates eddy current. Variations in the phase and the magnitude of these eddy currents can be monitored using a second “receiver” coil. Variations in the physical properties (electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability,..) or the presence of any flaw in the target will cause a change in eddy current and a corresponding change in the phase and amplitude of measured signal. The interpretation of the signals requires a good understanding of the interaction between eddy current and structure. Therefore, researchers need analytical or numerical techniques to obtain a clear understanding of wave propagation behaviors. However, modeling of wave scattering phenomenon by conventional numerical techniques such as finite elements requires very fine mesh and heavy computational power. To go further, an innovative implementation of a semi-analytical modeling method, called the Distributed Points Source Method (DPSM), has been developed and used. The DPSM has already shown great potentialities for the versatile and computationally efficient modeling of complex electrostatic, electromagnetic or ultrasounic problems. In this paper, we report on a new implementation of the DPSM, called differential DPSM, which shows interesting prospects for the modeling of complex eddy current problems. In parallel, an Eddy Current Imager (ECI) has been recently developed in our laboratory in the aim of imaging cracks in metallic structures. In this paper, a simplified modeling of the ECI is presented using DPSM technique, the basics of DPSM formalism being firstly developed. A comparison between experimental and computed data obtained for a millimetric surface defect is presented in the form of complex magnetic cartographies. The obtained results show good agreement. Then, imaging in the case of a buried object in a metallic target is discussed. The effect of 2 parameters (the conductivity and the depth of the buried object) on the magnetic field which is computed at the surface of the material through our DPSM modeling is presented. The objective is to predict the sensor behavior for different values of these parameters, and to plot some arrays of curves, which can be used as calibration curves for the sensor’s user.

Abstract

The electric field is commonly used in microdevices to handle, treat, or monitor living cells for various biological or biomedical applications (cells electrofusion, gene electrotransfer, drugs injection, cell sorting, …). Dielectrophoresis (DEP) forces, using stationary waves (conventional DEP) or traveling waves, are widely used for the cell handling or sorting. Electrorotation, which is induced by a rotating electrical field, is used for the determination of cell dielectric parameters. The application of pulsed electric field (PEF) results in the cell membrane permeabilization that might allow the transfer of various molecules in the cytoplasm. In this paper, we propose a method to monitor in situ the level of electropermeabilization induced by PEF application on a single cell, by combining the dielectrophoresis force and the electrorotation torque within a microfluidic device. The method was experimented on two different cell lines (human leukemic T-cell lymphoblast and murine melanoma cell): a single cell is captured by dielectrophoresis while its dielectric properties (both permittivity and conductivity of cytoplasm and membrane) are estimated thanks to a rotating electric field, which is applied simultaneously. The permeabilization effect of PEF, applied to the single cell trapped in such conditions in the biodevice, could be monitored by the estimation of its dielectric properties before and after pulse application., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
