Abstract

This paper explores the differences between, and shares the lessons learned from, two hypervelocity impact experiments critical to the update of orbital debris environment models. The procedures and processes of the fourth Satellite Orbital Debris Characterization Impact Test (SOCIT) were analyzed and related to the ongoing DebriSat experiment. SOCIT was the first hypervelocity impact test designed specifically for satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It targeted a 1960's U.S. Navy satellite, from which data was obtained to update pre-existing NASA and DOD breakup models. DebriSat is a comprehensive update to these satellite breakup models- necessary since the material composition and design of satellites have evolved from the time of SOCIT. Specifically, DebriSat utilized carbon fiber, a composite not commonly used in satellites during the construction of the US Navy Transit satellite used in SOCIT. Although DebriSat is an ongoing activity, multiple points of difference are drawn between the two projects. Significantly, the hypervelocity tests were conducted with two distinct satellite models and test configurations, including projectile and chamber layout. While both hypervelocity tests utilized soft catch systems to minimize fragment damage to its post-impact shape, SOCIT only covered 65% of the projected area surrounding the satellite, whereas, DebriSat was completely surrounded cross-range and downrange by the foam panels to more completely collect fragments. Furthermore, utilizing lessons learned from SOCIT, DebriSat's post-impact processing varies in methodology (i.e., fragment collection, measurement, and characterization). For example, fragment sizes were manually determined during the SOCIT experiment, while DebriSat utilizes automated imaging systems for measuring fragments, maximizing repeatability while minimizing the potential for human error. In addition to exploring these variations in methodologies and processes, this paper also presents the challenges DebriSat has encountered thus far and how they were addressed. Accomplishing DebriSat's goal of collecting 90% of the debris, which constitutes well over 100,000 fragments, required addressing many challenges stemming from the very large number of fragments. One of these challenges arose in identifying the foam-embedded fragments. DebriSat addressed this by X-raying all of the panels once the loose debris were removed, and applying a detection algorithm developed in-house to automate the embedded fragment identification process. It is easy to see how the amount of data being compiled would be outstanding. Creating an efficient way to catalog each fragment, as well as archiving the data for reproducibility also posed a great challenge for DebriSat. Barcodes to label each fragment were introduced with the foresight that once the characterization process began, the datasheet for each fragment would have to be accessed again quickly and efficiently. The DebriSat experiment has benefited significantly by leveraging lessons learned from the SOCIT experiment along with the technological advancements that have occurred during the time between the experiments. The two experiments represent two ages of satellite technology and, together, demonstrate the continuous efforts to improve the experimental techniques for fragmentation debris characterization.

南大洋の形成過程は，ゴンドワナの分裂過程と言い換えることができる．本稿の目的はゴンドワナの分裂過程をレビューすることで，南大洋の形成についての理解を深めることである．大陸分裂は，プルームの上昇によって始まる場合とプレート運動によってリフティングが生じて始まる場合がある．南大洋の形成と直接の関係がある東ゴンドワナの分裂の際には，大陸分裂初期過程のリフティングが先行し，プルームによる活動がそれに続いたようである．約3000 万年前に南極大陸が孤立することによって南大洋は現在と同じセッティングになった．タスマニアゲートウェイが約3400 万年前に形成され，ドレイク海峡は約2700 万年前に形成されたと推定されている．, The Southern Ocean had been formed by the continental break-up of the Gondwana. In this paper, we review the break-up history of the Gondwana to understand the Southern Ocean formation in terms of geology, geophysics, and tectonics. Two cases of continental break-up are proposed: continental break-up followed by plume upwelling or ascending of deep hot materials due to thinning continental lithosphere during continental break-up. In the cases for break-up of the East Gondwana, with which the Southern Ocean was directly formed, it is likely that deep hot materials arose after rifting of the continental lithosphere. The distribution of continent and ocean in the Southern Ocean had completed at around 30 Ma when Antarctica had been isolated near the present location. Tasmanian gateway between Australia and Antarctica had formed at approximately 34 million years ago, and the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica had formed at approximately 27 million years ago.

44. Interleukin‐4 repairs wear particle induced osteolysis by modulating macrophage polarization and bone turnover.

Abstract

Periprosthetic osteolysis remains as a major complication of total joint replacement surgery. Modulation of macrophage polarization with interleukin‐4 (IL‐4) has emerged as an effective means to limit wear particle‐induced osteolysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of local IL‐4 delivery in treating preexisting particle‐induced osteolysis. To this end, recently established 8 week modification of murine continuous femoral intramedullary particle infusion model was utilized. Subcutaneous infusion pumps were used to deliver polyethylene (PE) particles into mouse distal femur for 4 weeks to induce osteolysis. IL‐4 was then added to the particle infusion for another 4 weeks. This delayed IL‐4 treatment (IL‐4 Del) was compared to IL‐4 delivered continuously (IL‐4 Cont) with PE particles from the beginning and to the infusion of particles alone for 8 weeks. Both IL‐4 treatments were highly effective in preventing and repairing preexisting particle‐induced bone loss as assessed by μCT. Immunofluorescence indicated a significant reduction in the number of F4/80 + iNOS + M1 macrophages and increase in the number of F4/80 + CD206 + M2 macrophages with both IL‐4 treatments. Reduction in the number of tartrate resistant acid phosphatase + osteoclasts and increase in the amount of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) + osteoblasts was also observed with both IL‐4 treatments likely explaining the regeneration of bone in these samples. Interesting, slightly more bone formation and ALP + osteoblasts were seen in the IL‐4 Del group than in the IL‐4 Cont group although these differences were not statistically significant. Abstract

Total joint replacement (TJR) has been widely used as a standard treatment for late-stage arthritis. One challenge for long-term efficacy of TJR is the generation of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene wear particles from the implant surface that activates an inflammatory cascade which may lead to bone loss, prosthetic loosening and eventual failure of the procedure. Here, we investigate the efficacy of local administration of mutant CCL2 proteins, such as 7ND, on reducing wear particle-induced inflammation and osteolysis in vivo using a mouse calvarial model. Mice were treated with local injection of 7ND or phosphate buffered saline (PBS) every other day for up to 14 days. Wear particle-induced osteolysis and the effects of 7ND treatment were evaluated using micro-CT, histology, and immunofluorescence staining. Compared with the PBS control, 7ND treatment significantly decreased wear particle-induced osteolysis, which led to a higher bone volume fraction and bone mineral density. Furthermore, immunofluorescence staining showed 7ND treatment decreased the number of recruited inflammatory cells and osteoclasts. Together, our results support the feasibility of local delivery of 7ND for mitigating wear particle-induced inflammation and osteolysis, which may offer a promising strategy for extending the life time of TJRs.
