SUMMARY: The suprarenal glands are bilaterally supplied by three suprarenal arteries and drained by a single suprarenal vein. Variable vascular origins of the fetal suprarenal gland have been documented in different population groups viz. Indian, Polish and Argentinian. However, there is lack of a detailed description regarding the course, relations, number of branches and vertebral levels of the origins of the vasculature of the suprarenal glands in fetuses. This study aimed to identify and document the vascular supply of the suprarenal glands in fetuses in a South African setting. Fifty fetal specimens (26 males; 24 females) with a gestational age ranging between 12 and 20 weeks, were bilaterally micro-dissected (n=100) using a Zeiss Stemi DV4 microscope. Data was recorded and the frequencies of the origin, course, relations, number of branches and vertebral levels of the suprarenal vascular supply were determined. Arterial supply: Origin: (i) The superior suprarenal artery (SSA) bilaterally arose from the inferior phrenic arteries in 98 % of the fetuses; (ii) the middle suprarenal artery (MSA) frequently arose from the renal artery (RA) on the right side (46 %) and the abdominal aorta on the left side (34 %); while (iii) the inferior suprarenal artery (ISA) predominantly arose from the RA in 91 % of the specimens, bilaterally. Course and relations: The suprarenal arteries followed a superior, inferior, lateral, supero-lateral and infero-lateral course to the gland. These arteries were closely related to the crura of the diaphragm, the inferior vena cava, the left inferior phrenic vein and the pancreas. Number of branches: The branches ranged from one to seven for the SSA, one to four for the MSA and one to three for the ISA. Vertebral levels: The SSA predominantly arose from the first lumbar (L1) vertebral body (32 %), the MSA arose from the middle third of the intervertebral disc between the L1 and the second lumbar (L2) vertebrae (19 %) and the ISA arose from the L2 vertebral body (28 %). Venous drainage: In 1 % of the specimens, an additional right suprarenal vein (ARSV) was observed. This ARSV followed a superomedial course into the inferior vena cava, just below the entrance of the main right suprarenal vein. The arteries supplying the suprarenal gland presented varying origins and number of branches, corroborating with the reviewed literature and standard anatomical textbooks. The findings of this study may aid pediatric surgeons in understanding the vascular morphology (and the variations thereof) of the suprarenal gland, when performing adrenelectomy surgery in neonates. RESUMEN: Las glándulas suprarrenales son irrigadas bilateralmente por tres arterias suprarrenales y drenadas por una sola vena suprarrenal. Los orígenes vasculares variables de la glándula suprarrenal fetal se han documentado en diferentes grupos de población: indios, polacos y argentinos. Sin embargo, no existe una descripción detallada del curso, las relaciones, el número de ramas y los niveles vertebrales de los orígenes de la vasculatura de las glándulas suprarrenales en los fetos. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar y documentar el suministro vascular de las glándulas suprarrenales en fetos en una población sudafricana. Cincuenta especímenes fetales (26 hombres; 24 mujeres) con una edad gestacional que oscila entre las 12 y las 20 semanas, fueron micro-diseccionados bilateralmente (n = 100) utilizando un microscopio Zeiss Stemi DV4. Se registraron los datos y se determinaron las frecuencias de origen, curso, relaciones, número de ramas y niveles vertebrales del suministro vascular suprarrenal. Suministro arterial: Origen: (i) La arteria suprarrenal superior (SSA) surgió bilateralmente de las arterias frénicas inferiores en el 98 % de los fetos; (ii) la arteria suprarrenal media (MSA) surgió frecuentemente de la arteria renal (AR) en el lado derecho (46 %) y en la parte abdominal de la aorta en el lado izquierdo (34 %); mientras que (iii) la arteria suprarrenal inferior (AIS) surgió predominantemente de la AR en el 91 % de los especímenes, bilateralmente. Curso y relaciones: las arterias suprarrenales seguían un curso superior, inferior, lateral, superolateral e inferolateral hacia la glándula. Estas arterias estaban estrechamente relacionadas con la crura del diafragma, la vena cava inferior, la vena frénica inferior izquierda y el páncreas. Número de ramas: Las ramas variaron de una a siete para la SSA, de una a cuatro para la MSA y de una a tres para la ISA. Niveles vertebrales: la SSA surgió predominantemente del primer cuerpo vertebral lumbar (L1) (32 %), la MSA surgió del tercio medio del disco intervertebral entre la L1 y la segunda vértebra lumbar (L2) (19 %) y la ISA surgió del cuerpo vertebral L2 (28 %). Drenaje venoso: en el 1 % de las muestras, se observó una vena suprarrenal derecha (ARSV) adicional. Este ARSV siguió un curso superomedial hacia la vena cava inferior, justo debajo de la entrada de la vena suprarrenal derecha principal. SUMMARY: The mandibular notch is located on the superior margin, between two prominent processes of the mandibular ramus, the coronoid and condylar processes. The mandibular notch permits the entry of the masseteric artery, vein and nerve to the deep surface the masseteric muscle. Literary reports documented variations in both, the shape and size of the mandibular notch. Therefore, this study aimed to document the morphology and morphometry of the mandibular notch in the South African Black and Indian population groups and to determine their relationship to sex, age and race (if any). The morphometric and morphological parameters of the mandibular notch were measured and assessed in 149 digital panoramic radiographs and 51 dry mandible specimens (n=400) belonging to the South African Black African and Indian population groups. A combination of classification schemes by Mohammad et al. (2012) and Shakya et al. (2013) were adopted to assess the morphology of the mandibular notch. The morphometric parameter was measured using the Dicom x-ray viewer and a digital vernier caliper. Each of the morphometric and morphological parameters were statistically analyzed using SPSS, to determine if a relationship existed between the afore-mentioned parameters and sex, age and race. This study recorded the round shaped mandibular notch to be the most prevalent type in both sexes with a combined incidence of 44.2 %. The length of the mandibular notch was reported to be greater in males than females and concurred with previous studies. However, the selected South African group displayed a smaller mandibular notch than the Japanese and Chinese population groups. Furthermore, this study documented population differences among the South African population group, as the Black African population group showed a wider mandibular notch than the Indian population group. This suggests that population-specific differences may exist for both the morphological and morphometric parameters of the mandibular notch. However, only a statistically significant relationship between the length of the mandibular notch with age and race was documented. The mandibular notch may be of clinical significance to maxillofacial surgeons for surgical and reconstructive procedures, in addition it may also aid forensic anthropologists in the identification of unknown remains. RESUMEN: La incisura mandibular se encuentra en el margen superior, entre dos procesos importantes de la rama mandibular, el proceso coronoides y el proceso condilar. La incisura mandibular permite la entrada de la arteria, la vena y el nervio masetérico en la superficie profunda del músculo masetero. En la literatura se han documentado variaciones tanto en la forma como en el tamaño de la incisura mandibular. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo documentar la morfología y la morfometría de la incisura mandibular en los grupos de población de negros e indios sudafricanos y determinar su relación con el sexo, la edad y la raza. Los parámetros morfométricos y morfológicos de la incisura mandibular se midieron y evaluaron en 149 radiografías panorámicas digitales y 51 especímenes de mandíbula seca (n = 400) pertenecientes a los grupos de población sudafricana negra e india. Una combinación de esquemas de clasificación de Mohammad et al. (2012) y Shakya et al. (2013) fueron adoptados para evaluar la morfología de la incisura mandibular. El parámetro morfométrico se midió utilizando el visor de rayos X Dicom y un calibrador Vernier digital. Cada uno de los parámetros morfométricos y morfológicos se analizaron estadísticamente utilizando el software SPSS, para determinar si existía una relación entre los parámetros mencionados anteriormente y el sexo, la edad y la raza. Este estudio registró la incisura mandibular de forma redonda como el tipo más prevalente en ambos sexos, con una incidencia de un 44,2 %. Se informó que la longitud de la incisura mandibular es mayor en hombres que en mujeres y coincidió con estudios anteriores. Sin embargo, el grupo sudafricano seleccionado mostró una incisura mandibular más pequeña que los grupos de población japoneses y chinos. Además, se documentó las diferencias de población entre el grupo de Sudáfrica, ya que el grupo de población negra de África mostró una incisura mandibular más amplia que el grupo de la población India. Esto sugiere que pueden existir diferencias específicas de la población para los parámetros morfológicos y morfométricos de la incisura mandibular. SUMMARY: The morphology and morphometry of the foramen magnum aid forensic studies in identifying unknown individuals according to age and sex. Moreover, these parameters of the foramen magnum have clinical relevance to surgeons in the transcondylar approach. This study aimed to analyze the morphometry and morphology in relation to the age and sex of individuals within the South African Black population, utilizing computerized tomography images. The use of computerized tomography images allowed for accurate morphometric diameters using the SLICER 3-D software version 4.7.0. Radiological images also provide a patient’s clinical history. Thus, the process of exclusion in respect to patients with pathological conditions of the skull is achieved. The sample studied included 150 computerized tomography images (93 males and 57 females) arranged according to age cohorts (children aged 1-12 years, adolescents aged 13-17 years and adults aged 18-25 years). The morphometric parameters viz. antero-posterior diameter, transverse diameter and area of the foramen magnum was analyzed in relation to age and sex. The morphological variations of the foramen magnum was simultaneously observed between males and females and within the age groups. The objective of this study were to improve data on the morphological and morphometric parameters of the foramen magnum in the South African Black population. This study also attempted to associate the morphological and morphometric parameters of the foramen magnum with age and sex determination. RESUMEN: La morfología y morfometría del foramen magnum ayuda a los estudios forenses en la identificación de individuos desconocidos según la edad y el sexo. Además, parámetros del foramen magnum tienen relevancia clínica para los cirujanos en el abordaje transcondilar. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar la morfometría y la morfología del foramen magnum, en relación con la edad y el sexo, dentro de la población negra sudafricana, utilizando imágenes de tomografía computarizada. El uso de imágenes de tomografía computarizada permitió definir diámetros morfométricos precisos utilizando el software SLICER 3-D versión 4.7.0. Las imágenes radiológicas también proporcionan antecedentes de la historia clínica de un paciente. De este modo, se logra el proceso de exclusión con respecto a los pacientes con afecciones patológicas del cráneo. La muestra estudiada incluyó 150 imágenes de tomografía computarizada (93 hombres y 57 mujeres) organizadas según cohortes de edad (niños de 1 a 12 años, adolescentes de 13 a 17 años y adultos de 18 a 25 años). Los parámetros morfométricos que se consideraron fueron: diámetro antero-posterior, diámetro transversal y área del foramen magnum. Las variaciones morfológicas del foramen magnum se observaron simultáneamente entre hombres y mujeres y dentro de los grupos de edad. El objetivo de este estudio fue mejorar los datos sobre los parámetros morfológicos y morfométricos del foramen magnum en la población negra sudafricana. Este estudio también intentó asociar los parámetros morfológicos y morfométricos del foramen magnum con la determinación de la edad y el sexo.

SUMMARY: The seven cervical vertebrae found in the human body are classified into typical and atypical vertebrae. Their transverse processes contain foramen transversarium (FT) and traditionally there is one foramen present on each side, of similar size. However, variations of this foramen regarding its shape, size, number, laterality, location and osteometric characteristics have been documented in the literature. This morphological and morphometric study was conducted on 126 cervical vertebrae (82 typical and 44 atypical) obtained from the osteological bank at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal to produce a database which may serve as a useful guideline to medical personnel. There were variations observed regarding shape, number of FT, laterality and position, which have not previously been reported. The most types of variations were evident in the typical cervical vertebrae, then secondly, the seventh cervical vertebrae. The axis vertebrae did not display any accessory FT or variations. RESUMEN: Las siete vértebras cervicales que se encuentran en el cuerpo humano se clasifican como vértebras típicas y atípicas. Sus procesos transversos presentan un foramen transverso (FT) y normalmente este foramen es de tamaño similar en cada lado. Sin embargo, se han reportado en la literatura variaciones de este foramen, con respecto a su forma, tamaño, número, lateralidad, ubicación y características osteométricas. Este estudio morfológico y morfométrico se realizó en 126 vértebras cervicales (82 típicas y 44 atípicas) obtenidas del banco de Osteología de la Universidad de Kwa-Zulu Natal, para producir una base de datos que pueda servir como una guía útil para el personal médico. Se observaron variaciones con respecto a la forma, el número de FT, la lateralidad y la posición, que no se habían reportado anteriormente. La mayoría de los tipos de variaciones eran evidentes en las vértebras cervicales típicas y en segundo lugar en las séptimas vértebras cervicales. Los axis no mostraron ningún FT accesorio o variaciones.

SUMMARY: Age estimation from clavicular ossification has been studied by many researchers based on the pattern and degree of the epiphyseal union through the use of dry bone specimens, radiographs, CT and MRI. These studies found clavicular ossification as a useful age indicator up to the third decade of life. The study aimed to document any population specific influence on age estimation using fusion processes of the clavicular epiphysis between the South African and Kenyan population groups. To achieve this objective a study of one thousand six hundred and five (n=1605) digital radiographs of South African and Kenyan population groups, aged between 14-30 years, were evaluated. The ossification process of the medial clavicular epiphysis was scored against Schmeling’s staging system. Growth variations between the two cohorts were carried out using student t-test analysis to assess for any significant differences between the means and standard deviations of the cohorts. A log linear regression test was also applied to test bilateral asymmetry in the ossification status for the medial epiphysis. The results of the paired linear model indicated a wide gap between chronological age (CA) and estimated age (EA) in patients under 20 years. The regression tests observed no significant difference between the EA of the South African and Kenyan populations. The current study yielded no significant differences in the ossification process of the medial clavicle amongst the Black South African and Kenyan populations when using Schmeling’s staging system. RESUMEN: La estimación de la edad a partir de la osificación clavicular ha sido estudiada por muchos investigadores según el patrón y el grado de unión epifisaria mediante el uso de muestras de hueso seco, radiografías, tomografía computarizada y resonancia magnética. Estos estudios encontraron la osificación clavicular como un indicador de edad útil hasta la tercera década de la vida. El estudio tuvo como objetivo documentar cualquier influencia específica de la población en la estimación de la edad utilizando los procesos de fusión de la epífisis clavicular entre los grupos de población de Sudáfrica y Kenia. Para lograr este objetivo, se evaluó un estudio de mil seiscientas cinco (n = 1605) radiografías digitales de grupos de la población de Sudáfrica y Kenia, con edades comprendidas entre 14 y 30 años. El proceso de osificación de la epífisis clavicular medial se puntuó frente al sistema de estadificación de Schmeling. Las variaciones de crecimiento entre las dos cohortes se llevaron a cabo utilizando la prueba t de Student para evaluar las diferencias significativas entre las medias y las desviaciones estándar de las cohortes. También se aplicó una prueba de regresión lineal para evaluar la asimetría bilateral en el estado de osificación de la epífisis medial. Los resultados del modelo lineal indicaron una gran brecha entre la edad cronológica (CA) y la edad estimada (EA) en pacientes menores de 20 años. En las pruebas de regresión no se observaron diferencias significativas entre la EA de las poblaciones de Sudáfrica y Kenia. El presente estudio no presentó diferencias significativas en el proceso de osificación epífisis medial de la clavícula entre las poblaciones negras de Sudáfrica y Kenia cuando se usó el sistema de estadificación de Schmeling et al.

SUMMARY: The dorsalis pedis artery (DPA) is the largest blood vessel distal to the ankle joint. It is the continuation of the anterior tibial artery (ATA) and runs along the dorsum of the foot until the 1st intermetatarsal space. The DPA gives rise to five branches, viz. medial tarsal, lateral tarsal, arcuate, deep plantar and dorsal metatarsal arteries. Given the vast blood supply provided by the DPA, in the current era of microvascular surgery, the anatomy of the DPA is of increasing interest to anatomists, surgeons and angiographers. The aim of this study was to outline the course, origin, branching patterns and possible variations of the DPA. The present study included the dissection of forty (n=40) cadaveric specimens of the lower limb region (Left: 25; Right: 15). The origin, course and branching patterns of the artery were studied. These morphological parameters were further analysed with regard to laterality to determine if a correlation existed. The Pearson Chi-square test was employed and a p value of less than 0.05 was deemed statistically significant. Although the DPA was present in 97.5 % of cases, it followed the standard anatomical description in only 42.5 % of cases. The DPA originated from the peroneal artery in 5 % of cases. In 25 % of cases, DPA deviated laterally. Variation in the branching pattern of the DPA, which was recorded in 50 % of cases, was further classified according Types 1 to 6. The findings of this study correlated closely with most previous studies. However, the incidence of lateral deviation of the DPA was higher in this study as well as the incidence of Type 1 variation in branching pattern. Additionally, this study proposes a novel variation in branching pattern which has been termed Type 6, which displays a recurrent branch of the Type 5 variation. The DPA has an important role in a clinical setting since the DPA flap is employed in reconstructive surgeries and peripheral circulation may be assessed by the palpation of the DPA pulse. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the DPA is of prime importance to podiatrists, surgeons, anatomists and angiographers. RESUMEN: La arteria dorsal del pie (ADP) es el vaso sanguíneo más grande distal a la articulación del tobillo. Es la continuación de la arteria tibial anterior (ATA) y se extiende a lo largo del dorso del pie hasta el primer espacio metatarsiano. La ADP da lugar a cinco ramas: a. tarsalis medialis, a. tarsalis lateralis, a. arcuata, a. plantaris profunda y aa. metatarsales dorsales. Dado el vasto suministro de sangre proporcionado por la ADP, en la era actual de la cirugía microvascular, la anatomía de la ADP es de creciente interés para los anatomistas, cirujanos y expertos en angiografía. El objetivo de este estudio fue delinear el curso, origen, patrones de ramificación y las posibles variaciones de la ADP. El presente estudio incluyó la disección de cuarenta (n = 40) muestras cadavéricas del miembro inferior (izquierda: 25; derecha: 15). Se estudiaron los patrones de origen, curso y ramificación de la arteria. Estos parámetros morfológicos se analizaron adicionalmente con respecto a la lateralidad para determinar si existía una correlación. Se empleó la prueba Chi-cuadrado de Pearson y se consideró estadísticamente significativo un valor de p de menos de 0,05. Aunque la ADP estuvo presente en el 97,5 % de los casos, siguió la descripción anatómica estándar en solo el 42,5 % de los casos. La ADP se originó en la arteria fibular en el 5 % de los casos. En el 25 % de los casos, la ADP se desvió lateralmente. La variación en el patrón de ramificación de la ADP, que se registró en el 50 % de los casos, se clasificó según los tipos 1 a 6. Los hallazgos de este estudio se correlacionaron estrechamente con la mayoría de los estudios previos. Sin embargo, la incidencia de desviación lateral de la ADP fue mayor en este estudio, así como la incidencia de la variación del tipo 1 en el patrón de ramificación. Además, este estudio propone una nueva variación en el patrón de ramificación que se ha denominado Tipo 6, que muestra una rama recurrente de la variación Tipo 5. La ADP tiene un papel importante en la clínica, ya que el colgajo de la ADP se emplea en cirugías reconstructivas y la circulación periférica se puede evaluar mediante la palpación del pulso de la ADP. Por lo tanto, una comprensión profunda de la anatomía de la ADP es de vital importancia para los podólogos, cirujanos, anatomistas y en la angiografía.

SUMMARY: A better understanding of students’ attitudes towards body donation, their role as potential donors and their preparedness to support body donation activities may help in the preparation of body donor programme strategies. The aim of the study was to determine the willingness to self-donate, and the religious and cultural beliefs on body donation in a sample of South African undergraduate students. A cross-sectional study was conducted on Black African undergraduate students of two schools in their first to third years of study in a South African University between 2014 and 2015. Four hundred and twenty questionnaires were administered. A total of three hundred and seventy-two students completed the questionnaire. A low proportion of the respondents (14.7 %) were willing to self-donate with the prevalent reason being to aid anatomical teaching. Religious beliefs were the predominant reason for unwillingness to self-donate. In addition, a low percentage of the students reflected that their religious (8.7 %) and cultural (4.1 %) beliefs permitted whole body donation. In conclusion, this study shares insights into the attitudes of undergraduate students towards body donation. For future body donation programmes, this group might not be a possible pool for such programmes. However, this group of students can assist in spreading the message to the public as they had very good knowledge about issues surrounding body donation. RESUMEN: El propósito fue obtener un mayor conocimiento de las actitudes de estudiantes hacia la donación de cuerpo, su papel como potenciales donantes y su preparación para apoyar las actividades en la preparación de estrategias del programa de la donación. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la voluntad de auto donar el cuerpo, además de las creencias religiosas y culturales sobre la donación de cuerpos en una muestra de estudiantes sudafricanos de pregrado. Se realizó un estudio transversal en estudiantes negros africanos de pregrado de dos escuelas, en su primer a tercer año de estudio en una universidad sudafricana entre los años 2014 y 2015. Se administraron 420 cuestionarios. Un total de 372 estudiantes completaron el cuestionario. Una baja proporción de los encuestados (14,7 %) estaban dispuestos a donar su cuerpo citando como razón predominante el apoyo a la enseñanza anatómica. Las creencias religiosas predominaron durante la encuesta ante la falta de voluntad de la auto-donación. Además, un porcentaje menor de los estudiantes reflejó que sus creencias religiosas (8,7 %) y culturales (4,1 %) permitían la donación de todo el cuerpo. En conclusión, este estudio entrega una mejor percepción de las actitudes de alumnos de pregrado hacia la donación de cuerpos. En el futuro, este grupo posiblemente podría no ser un buen referente para los programas de donación de órganos. Sin embargo, este grupo de estudiantes puede ayudar en la difusión de información al público, debido a que tenían muy buen conocimiento sobre los temas que se refieren a la donación del cuerpo.

SUMMARY: The critical shoulder angle and acromion index are conventional radiological tools employed as predictors of shoulder degeneration. As they represent the static components of glenohumeral stability, the scapulo-humeral geometry and underlying subacromial tissue appear as the resultant cause-effect factors. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to investigate the critical shoulder angle and acromion index as interrelated parameters within the South African population. The measurement of both biomechanical parameters was conducted on two-hundred and sixty (n = 260) true AP radiographs. This was a cross-sectional study that also incorporated the demographic representation of the population group which was analysed accordingly. The mean values recorded for both the critical shoulder angle (36.31±5.84º) and acromion index (0.74±0.13) suggested rotator cuff arthropathy. The results confirmed the theories of Nyffeler et al. (2006) and Moor et al. (2012) who alluded to glenoid inclination and the acromial coverage over the humeral head. A significant proportionality correlation, verified by a P value of 0.000, was established between the acromion index and critical shoulder angle which may assist to differentiate between normal asymptomatic shoulders and those with cuff disease. Furthermore, these predictors of shoulder degeneration may present as a preventative tool against tear progression. RESUMEN: El ángulo crítico del hombro y el índice acromial son herramientas radiológicas convencionales empleadas como indicadores de la degeneración del hombro. Debido a que representan los componentes estáticos de la estabilidad glenohumeral, la geometría escápulo-humeral y el tejido subacromial subyacente aparecen como los factores causa-efecto resultantes. En consecuencia, el propósito de este estudio fue investigar el ángulo crítico del hombro y el índice acromial como parámetros interrelacionados dentro de la población sudafricana. La medición de ambos parámetros biomecánicos se realizó en 260 radiografías antero-posteriores (AP). Se realizó un estudio transversal que también incorporó la representación demográfica del grupo de la población que fue analizada. Los valores medios registrados tanto para el ángulo crítico del hombro (36,31 ± 5,84º) como para el índice del acromión (0,74 ± 0,13) sugirieron una artropatía del manguito rotador. Los resultados confirmaron las teorías de Nyffeler et al. (2006) y Moor et al. (2012) que aludían a la inclinación glenoide y a la cobertura acromial sobre la cabeza humeral. Se estableció una correlación de proporcionalidad significativa, verificada por un valor de P de 0,000, entre el índice acromial y el ángulo crítico del hombro, lo que puede ayudar a diferenciar entre los hombros asintomáticos normales y aquellos con enfermedad del manguito rotador. Además, estos predictores de degeneración del hombro pueden ser útiles como una herramienta preventiva contra la progresión del desgarro.

SUMMARY: The external jugular vein (EJV) is formed by the union of the posterior division of the retromandibular vein and posterior auricular vein, while the internal jugular vein (IJV) is a continuation of the sigmoid sinus. A number of variations in the formation, lengths and drainage patterns of EJV and IJV have been documented in adults, however there is a paucity of literature regarding fetal studies. This study aimed to highlight variation patterns of external and internal jugular veins in 40 fetuses (n=80). This study included the bilaterally dissection of the neck region in 40 fetuses between the gestational ages of 15-28 weeks at the University of KwaZulu-Natal as per Grants Dissector. This study observed three variations in the pattern of the EJV and IJV. With regard to the EJV, duplication occurred on the sternocleidomastoid muscle in 4 % of the specimens sampled in this study, which concurred to a study conducted by Olabu et al. (2015) in a Kenyan sample. The “Y-shaped” IJV occurred in 1 % of the specimens, however the “Y-shaped” IJV gave off a tributary to the EJV in 3 % of the specimens sampled in this study. Lalwani et al. (2006) stated a rare venous communication between the EJV and IJV. The knowledge of the variable patterns of the external and internal jugular veins are important to clinicians performing micro-vascular surgeries in head and neck region. RESUMEN: La vena yugular externa (VYE) está formada por la unión de la división posterior de la vena retromandibular y la vena auricular posterior, mientras que la vena yugular interna (VYI) es una continuación del seno sigmoideo. En adultos se han documentado una serie de variaciones en la formación, las longitudes y los patrones de drenaje de la VYE y la VYI, sin embargo hay escasa literatura con respecto a estudios fetales. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo destacar los patrones de variación de las venas yugulares externa e interna en 40 fetos (n = 80). El estudio incluyó la disección bilateral de la región del cuello en 40 fetos de edades gestacionales entre 15-28 semanas en la Universidad de KwaZuluNatal. Se observó tres variaciones en el patrón de la VYE y la VYI. Con respecto a la VYE, se produjo duplicación en el músculo esternocleidomastoideo en el 4 % de los especímenes, lo que coincidió con un estudio realizado por Olabu et al. en una muestra keniana. La VYI en "Y" se observó en el 1 % de los especímenes, y otorgó un afluente a la VYE en el 3 % de los especímenes muestreados en este estudio. SUMMARY: Organ weights may be influenced by various demographic parameters and environmental conditions, and they differ among populations. Numerous studies have been conducted in the Northern hemisphere, with paucity of literature regarding organ weights of many Southern hemispheric populations. This study aimed to document post-mortem organ weights of decedents in the eThekwini region, and to determine the influence of age, sex, population grouping and body length on the weight of these organs. The study utilised 500 decedent organs (n=500), obtained from a medico-legal state mortuary in the eThekwini region, KwaZuluNatal, South Africa. It entailed gross examination and weighing of the thoracic viz. heart, right and left lungs, and abdominal organs viz. liver, spleen as well as the right and left kidneys. All organs attained maximum or peak weights at various age intervals, with the heart continuing to increase in weight until 80 years of age. Organ weights illustrated statistical significance with age. The heart, lungs and liver were the only organs that showed statistical significance with sex. However, mean spleen weights were higher in females than in males, while the weights of both kidneys were higher in males. Organ weights of White decedents were higher than those of other population groups. There was a positive correlation between body length and all organ weights. Post-mortem organ weights of the present study are comparably higher than those reported in the Northern hemisphere. Therefore, organ weights reported from one geographic location may not be applicable to another and may lead to erroneous references ranges and possibly hinder interpretation during autopsy settings. RESUMEN: El peso de los órganos puede estar influenciado por diversos parámetros demográficos y condiciones ambientales; además estos difieren entre las poblaciones. Se han realizado numerosos estudios en el hemisferio norte, con escasa información en la literatura sobre el peso de órganos en poblaciones del hemisferio sur. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo documentar el peso de órganos post mortem en la región eThekwini y determinar la influencia de la edad, sexo, agrupación de la población y longitud corporal sobre el peso de los órganos. Para el estudio se utilizaron 500 órganos (n = 500), obtenidos del Servicio Médico Legal de la Región eThekwini de KwaZulu-Natal, Sudáfrica. Se estudiaron el peso y tamaño de las vértebras torácicas, el corazón, pulmones derecho e izquierdo, órganos abdominales, como el hígado, bazo, además del peso de los riñones derecho e izquierdo. Los pesos medios de órganos registrados para la población de la muestra fueron: corazón (328,93 g), pulmón derecho (581,73 g), pulmón izquierdo (485,92 g), hígado (1376,62 g), bazo (153,50 g), riñón derecho (146,67 g) y riñón izquierdo (154,32 g). Los órganos alcanzaron pesos máximos a diferentes intervalos de edad: el corazón continuó aumentando de peso hasta los 80 años de edad (438.00 g), mientras que los pulmones alcanzaron un peso maximo a los 61-70 años (720.70 g / 573.11 g). Los órganos abdominales, como el hígado (1550,67 g), el bazo (196,87 g) y los riñones (146,67 g / 154,32 g), alcanzaron todos el peso máximo entre los 41-50 años de edad. SUMMARY: A detailed understanding of the coronary arteries is of paramount importance in the management of coronary arterial diseases. The arterial supply to the heart originates from right (RCA) and left (LCA) coronary arteries which form an oblique inverted crown within the atrioventricular groove. This study aimed to document the embryologic relationship between the RCA and the LCA including their lengths, diameters, branching patterns and arterial dominance in fetuses. Forty-one human fetal heart specimens with an age range of 13.13 to 26.95 weeks were dissected at the Department of Clinical Anatomy, University of Kwazulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. The RCA arose from the right aortic sinus and was dominant in all the specimens. The LCA was classified into types according to their branching pattern. The bifurcation, trifurcation and quadrifurcation of the LCA occurred in 68.3 %, 29.3 % and 2.4 % of hearts, respectively. The mean lengths of the RCA and LCA were 0.98±0.54 mm and 1.83±0.77 mm, respectively. The mean external diameters of the RCA and LCA were 0.38±0.12 mm and 0.49±0.17 mm, respectively. There was a significant correlation between the RCA and LCA length and the fetal age which is indicative of significant changes in the coronary vasculature with fetal growth. RESUMEN: Una comprensión detallada de las arterias coronarias es de suma importancia en el manejo de las enfermedades en estas arterias. El suministro arterial al corazón se origina de las arterias coronarias derecha (ACD) e izquierda (ACI) que forman una “corona oblicua invertida” dentro del surco atrioventricular. Este estudio tuvo por objetivo documentar la relación embriológica entre la ACD y la ACI, incluyendo sus longitudes, diámetros, patrones de ramificación y dominio arterial en fetos. Se disecaron 41 corazones de fetos humanos con un rango de edad de 13,13 a 26,95 semanas, en el Departamento de Anatomía Clínica, Universidad de Kwazulu-Natal, Durban, Sudáfrica. La ACD surgió del seno aórtico derecho y fue dominante en todos los especímenes. La ACI se clasificó en distintos tipos según su patrón de ramificación. La bifurcación, trifurcación y cuadrifurcación de la ACI ocurrieron en 68,3 %, 29,3 % y 2,4 % de los corazones, respectivamente. Las longitudes medias de la ACD y ACI fueron 0,98 ± 0,54 mm y 1,83 ± 0,77 mm, respectivamente. Los diámetros externos medios de la ACD y ACI fueron 0,38 ± 0,12 mm y 0,49 ± 0,17 mm, respectivamente. The maxillary sinus varies according to age, however there are limited studies that have illustrated its 3D form over time. This study aimed to classify the maxillary sinus by the shape, number of septa and scallops in a 1 to 25 year age group, utilising computerized tomography (CT) scans and 3D reconstruction. CT scans (n=480) were reviewed from the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) of the state and private hospitals in Pietermaritzburg and Durban KwaZulu- Natal (KZN), South Africa. The sample consisted of 276 males and 204 females, 1-25 years and of two population groups, black African and white. SLICER 3D (www.slicer.org) was utilised in order to reconstruct a 3D model of the sinus. Morphological traits such as the presence of the sinus, scalloping and septa within the sinuses were categorised. In addition, the shape of the 3D model of the sinus was analysed anteriorly (coronal) and laterally (sagittal) adapting the classifications by Kim (1962) and Kim et al. (2002). The maxillary sinus was present bilaterally in n=477 individuals (99.4 %). Five different anterior shapes viz. Type 1 (triangular), Type 2 (upside down triangle), Type 3 (square), Type 4 (irregular) and Type 5 (rectangular) were identified in the anterior view.
