We present a multichannel cardiac magnetic field imaging system built in Fribourg from optical double-resonance Cs vapor magnetometers. It consists of 25 individual sensors designed to record magnetic field maps of the beating human heart by simultaneous measurements on a grid of 19 points over the chest. Abstract

We have manufactured more than 250 nominally identical paraffin-coated Cs vapor cells (30 mm diameter bulbs) for multi-channel atomic magnetometer applications. We describe our dedicated cell characterization apparatus. For each cell we have determined the intrinsic longitudinal, $\sGamma{01}$, and transverse, $\sGamma{02}$, relaxation rates. Our best cell shows $\sGamma{01}/2\pi\approx 0.5 Hz, and $\sGamma{02}/2\pi\approx 2 Hz. We find a strong correlation of both relaxation rates which we explain in terms of reservoir and spin exchange relaxation. For each cell we have determined the optimal combination of rf and laser powers which yield the highest sensitivity to magnetic field changes. Out of all produced cells, 90% are found to have magnetometric sensitivities in the range of 9 to 30 fTHz. Noise analysis shows that the magnetometers operated with such cells have a sensitivity close to the fundamental photon shot noise limit.

9. Sensitivity of double resonance alignment magnetometers

Abstract

We present an experimental study of the intrinsic magnetometric sensitivity of an optical/rf-frequency double resonance magnetometer in which linearly polarized laser light is used in the optical pumping and detection processes. We show that a semi-empirical model of the magnetometer can be used to describe the magnetic resonance spectra. Then, we present an efficient method to predict the optimum operating point of the magnetometer, i.e., the light power and rf Rabi frequency providing maximum magnetometric sensitivity. Finally, we apply the method to investigate the evolution of the optimum operating point with temperature. The method is very efficient to determine relaxation rates and thus allowed us to determine the three collisional disalignment cross sections for the components of the alignment tensor. Both first and second harmonic signals from the magnetometer are considered and compared.

Abstract

We present an experimental study of the spectra produced by optical/radio-frequency double resonance in which resonant linearly polarized laser light is used in the optical pumping and detection processes. We show that the experimental spectra obtained for cesium are in excellent agreement with a very general theoretical model developed in our group and we investigate the limitations of this model. Abstract

Herbal medicines are popular natural medicines that have been used for decades. The use of alternative medicines continues to expand rapidly across the world. The World Health Organization suggests that quality assessment of natural medicines is essential for any therapeutic or health care applications, as their therapeutic potential varies between different geographic origins, plant species, and varieties. Classification of herbal medicines based on a limited number of secondary metabolites is not an ideal approach. Their quality should be considered based on a complete metabolic profile, as their pharmacological activity is not due to a few specific secondary metabolites but rather a larger group of bioactive compounds. A holistic and integrative approach using rapid and nondestructive analytical strategies for the screening of herbal medicines is required for robust characterization. In this study, a rapid and effective quality assessment system for geographical traceability, species, and variety-specific authenticity of the widely used natural medicines turmeric, Ocimum , and Withania somnifera was investigated using Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy-based metabolic fingerprinting. Four different geographical origins of turmeric, five different Ocimum species, and three different varieties of roots and leaves of Withania somnifera were studied with the aid of machine learning approaches. Extremely good discrimination (R 2 > 0.98, Q2 > 0.97, and accuracy = 1.0) with sensitivity and specificity of 100% was achieved using this metabolic fingerprinting strategy. Our study demonstrated that FT-NIR-based rapid metabolic fingerprinting can be used as a robust analytical method to authenticate several important medicinal herbs. Abstract

We designed and fabricated a silicon photonic orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexer (MUX) chip that enables simultaneous wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and OAM mode-division multiplexing (MDM) in optical fiber communication systems. We successfully utilized the fabricated MUX chip to demonstrate simultaneous 3 OAM MDM transmission as well as OAM MDM/WDM transmission with an 800-m OAM ring-core fiber. In both cases, 10 Gbit/s OOK signals were utilized and BERs below the 7% FEC limit were obtained.

Abstract

A vaccine protecting against all influenza strains is a long-sought goal, particularly for emerging pandemics. As previously shown, vaccines based on the highly conserved extracellular domain of M2 (M2e) may protect against all influenza A strains. Here, we demonstrate that M2e-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) protect mice from a lethal influenza infection. To be protective, antibodies had to be able to bind to Fc receptors and fix complement. Furthermore, mAbs of IgG2c isotype were protective in mice, while antibodies of identical specificity, but of the IgG1 isotype, failed to prevent disease. These findings readily translated into vaccine design. A vaccine targeting M2 in the absence of a toll-like receptor (TLR) 7 ligand primarily induced IgG1, whilst the same vaccine linked to a TLR7 ligand yielded high levels of IgG2c antibodies. Although both vaccines protected mice from a lethal challenge, mice treated with the vaccine containing a TLR7 ligand showed significantly lower morbidity. In accordance with these findings, vaccination of TLR7(-/-) mice with a vaccine containing a TLR7 ligand did not result in protection from a lethal challenge. Hence, the innate immune system is required to direct isotype switching toward the more protective IgG2a/c antibodies.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The influence of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) on contrast-induced renal toxicity has been poorly studied. Nevertheless, it is a common practice in many centers to stop these drugs before coronarography. Our goal was to study whether renal function was affected in patients taking ACEIs or ARBs and undergoing a coronary angiogram. METHODS: Patients on ACEIs or ARBs (n=17) and those not on ACEIs or ARBs (n=18) admitted for a coronary angiogram underwent glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) assessment either by isotopic clearances (51Cr-EDTA and MAG3) or inulin and paraimmuno-hippurate clearances 24 hours prior to and immediately after coronary angiogram. RESULTS: Median percentage GFR changes induced by the injection of contrast medium during coronary angiogram were -9% (interquartile range -19% to +3%) in the control group and -1% (interquartile range -9% to +39%) in the ACEI/ARB group. Mean ERPF remained stable after coronarography in the control group (median change -8%; interquartile range -18% to +6%) and increased slightly in the ACEI/ARB group (median change +9%; interquartile range -17% to +60%). The median percentage difference in EPRF change was not statistically significant between the 2 groups (p=0.18). CONCLUSIONS: Inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system is not associated with a decline in renal function in patients receiving contrast media, and there is no need to interrupt this treatment prior to coronary angiogram.
