Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine school leaders' experiences with adoption and implementation of artificial intelligence systems in their schools. It examined the factors that led educational administrators to adopt one artificial intelligence program (ALEKS) and their perceptions around the implementation process. Design/methodology/approach: This was a qualitative case study that included structured interviews with seven individuals who have adopted artificial intelligence programs in their schools. Participants were identified through purposive and snowball sampling. Interview transcripts were analyzed and put through a two-step coding process involving in vivo coding as well as pattern coding. Findings: Two major themes emerged from this study pertaining to the state of the diffusion of artificial intelligence through the adoption and implementation process. The findings indicated that school leaders were actively engaged in conversations related to AI adoption and implementation. They also created structures (organizational) to ensure the successful adoption and implementation of artificial intelligence. Originality/value: This is an original study that examined the experiences of school leaders who have adopted and implemented artificial intelligence in their schools. The body of literature related to artificial intelligence and school leadership is extremely limited.

This study examined the impact school leaders had on the self-efficacy of African American Male (AAM) teachers who matriculated through an alternative certification program. Purposeful sampling was used in this study with four inclusion criteria. The study occurred at a large urban Title 1 school district in the Southeast. The district was selected based on its implementation of an alternative certification program and relative success in recruiting and maintaining a diverse teaching staff. Tschannen-Moran and Hoy's 12-item teacher self-efficacy survey was administered to select teachers who scored high on their self-efficacy scale. Eleven AAM teachers from various urban school sites participated in this study. Data were collected through one-on-one and focus group interviews. Findings revealed three themes that captured the ways school leaders impacted teacher self-efficacy. Study results can help provide leaders and policymakers with guidance as they seek to address the teaching shortage and develop a more diverse teaching workforce through alternative certification programs. School leaders around the world navigate a learning environment where most students have (or soon will have) ubiquitous access to an Internet-connected device. As a result, districts have implemented acceptable use policies (AUPs) to address the ways that students are using those technologies. In this study, we analyzed the AUPs of 75 one-to-one computing school districts in one Midwestern state in the United States. We examined and coded each AUP and identified three major themes. Based on the findings from that analysis, a roadmap for creating a responsive and empowering responsible use policy (RUP) is proposed.

Although school 1:1 computing programs have been around for over 20 years, the literature base on such programs remains sparse. Despite limited research on efficacy and implementation, 1:1 initiatives are increasingly popular in P-12 schools. The impact of these programs is not yet certain. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact that 1:1 schools had on teachers' technology competency and instructional integration. Propensity score matching was used in order to have similar control (non-1:1) and treatment (1:1) schools in the sample. The final sample included 110 high schools and 922 secondary school teachers in the state of Iowa. Data were collected from public databases as well as from teacher surveys. The final data analysis was conducted using a multilevel model with three separate models for each of the dependent variables (competency and integration). Results indicated that teachers in schools with 1:1 student computing initiatives report higher levels of personal technology competency and classroom integration of learning technologies.

One of the fastest growing, most discussed, and most expensive technology initiatives over the last decade has been one-to-one (1:1) computing initiatives. The purpose of this study was to examine key factors that influenced implementing and sustaining 1:1 computing initiatives from the perspective of school superintendents. Nine superintendents of established 1:1 programs were interviewed, and findings identified five themes for successful implementation and sustainability of 1:1 initiatives.

In March 2020, schools worldwide suddenly and dramatically transitioned to online learning. This article describes a case study where we used a purposeful sampling of six technology-savvy school principals to explore their experiences with student assessment of learning during the pandemic. Findings captured how these tech-savvy leaders supported teachers, students, and parents and created an infrastructure that prepared them for the transition to online learning and assessment of that learning. The lessons learned are valuable for school leaders who have begun to embrace online and hybrid learning in ways they had not imagined before the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the impact of a one-to-one iPad program on inquiry-based instruction (IBI) in an all-girls science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-focused school with 99% African American students. Case study research was used and included three teachers at the school for the purpose of this study. Data collection included pre- and post-interviews and 27 classroom observations. The Electronic Quality of Inquiry Protocol (EQUIP) was used to evaluate the quality of inquiry-based instruction. The EQUIP rubric is aligned with the National Research Council's definition for inquiry-based instruction, and made the tool particularly helpful for this study. The study identified two major themes related to the impact of a one-to-one environment on IBI. Teachers were able to use the technology to enhance their IBI, and the ways in which (how) they used the technology also had a significant impact on the quality of their IBI.

This study investigated the relationship between the leader's gender, leadership position. Twitter use, and influence on information diffusion in the communication network on Twitter. We collected the 30,200 latest tweets of 151 active Twitter users who held educational leadership positions. Results of social network analysis and multiple regression analyses suggest a gender inequality in the leader's influence on information diffusion in the network. Findings also indicate no significant relationship between leadership position (district vs. building) and a leader's influence in the network. Moreover, Twitter following was positively associated with the leader's influence in the network, whereas the number of followers, weekly tweets, and the time of Twitter account creation did not predict the leader's influence. Practical implications on how leaders use Twitter to disseminate information are discussed.

Superintendents' instructional leadership is critical to the academic success of school systems. In addition to traditional work complexities, today's superintendents must navigate rapid and significant technological transformations. In this study, an exploratory sample of "technology-savvy" superintendents was interviewed to ascertain advice about how to navigate the complexities that surround successful district-level technology leadership strategies and mind-sets. Participants highlighted issues such as budgets, professional development, and instructional leadership, and affirmed the value of personally modeling technology use. They also emphasized both personal and organizational risk-taking and shared how communities of practice can help alleviate skill and knowledge gaps.

The researchers collaboratively identified K-12 school leaders who were active on Twitter and then collected tweets from those school leaders. The final sample for this study included 115 Twitter users and over 180,000 tweets from those individuals. The results of this study indicated that school leaders overwhelmingly used Twitter for educational purposes and as a way to create communities of practice focused on educational issues.

This study focuses on social justice from the perspective of five school leaders in Delhi, India. Four of the schools in the study are affluent. One school serves primarily students who live in extreme poverty. Through interviewing these leaders, two major themes were identified. First, these leaders tended to view human rights as a driver of a social justice paradigm. The environment where they lived and worked, however, greatly impacted their views of social justice. Second, we found that these leaders enacted social justice differently based on the context and the students whom they served. School leaders at the more affluent schools tended to focus on teaching about social justice and serving others. The leader of the less affluent school focused more on providing opportunities for students that would allow them to move out of poverty in hopes of changing their status in society. Both themes highlight the importance of context.

This study focuses on the successes and challenges faced by superintendents identified as "technology-savvy" by a prominent monthly educational technology newspaper published for practicing educators. The superintendents in this study described their experiences overcoming common issues that many school leaders face when attempting to integrate technology into their districts. The themes that emerged were related to shared vision, infrastructure, communication, and professional development.
