Two new Schiff base complexes, [Ni2(HL)2(μ1,3-N3)]ClO4·H2O (1) and [Co(L)(N3)] (2) where L = 2,2′-{(methylimino)bis[propane-3,1-diylnitrilomethylylidene]}diphenolate ion, have been synthesized by the reaction of equimolar amounts of nickel(II) or cobalt(II) perchlorate with the pentadentate Schiff base ligand (H2L) in presence of azide ion. The complexes have been characterized by microanalytical, spectroscopic, single crystal X-ray diffraction and other physicochemical studies. Structural studies reveal that 1 is an end-to-end azido-bridged binuclear complex in which each nickel(II) adopts irregular octahedral geometry. In contrast, 2 is a mononuclear octahedral cobalt(III) complex containing the azide ion in one of its apical positions. Low temperature magnetic measurements on 1 indicate noticeable intradimer ferromagnetic interactions.

Three new mononuclear complexes of copper(II), viz. [Cu(L)(N 3 )Cl] ( 1 ), [Cu(L′)(H 2 O)]ClO 4 ( 2 ) and [Cu(L″)] ( 3 ) where L = N -(3-aminopropyl)- N -methylpropane-1,3-diamine, L′ = 2-( N -{3-[(3-aminopropyl)(methyl)amino]propyl}ethanimidoyl)phenolate ion and L″ = 2,2′-{(methylimino)bis[propane-3,1-diylnitrilo(1 E )eth-1-yl-1-ylidene]}diphenolate ion, have been prepared. The synthesis of complex 1 has been achieved by reacting copper chloride with the triamine (L) and sodium azide in a 1:1:1 M ratio. The other two compounds have been synthesized by the reaction of copper perchlorate with the same triamine, L, plus 2-hydroxyacetophenone in a molar ratio of 1:1:1 (for 2 ) and 1:1:2 (for 3 ), so that the respective tetradentate and pentadentate Schiff bases HL′ and H 2 L″ are formed in situ to bind the copper(II) ions. The complexes have been characterized by microanalytical, spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Structural studies reveal that the mononuclear units of all the three complexes adopt a distorted square pyramidal geometry and are held together by either intermolecular H-bonding (in 1 and 2 ) or C–H⋯π interactions (in 3 ) to form supramolecular networks in the solid state.

Four succinato-bridged complexes of copper(II) have been synthesized. Complex 1, [Cu(2)(mu-OH(2))(2)L(bpy)(2)(NO(3))(2)](n) and 2, [Cu(2)(mu-OH(2))(2)L(phen)(2)(NO(3))(2)](n)(bpy = 2,2[prime or minute]-bipyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline and LH(2)= succinic acid) exhibit 1D coordination polymer structures where both the nitrate ions are directly linked to the copper(ii) producing synthons in a 2D sheet. A novel 2D grid-like network, ([Cu(4)L(2)(bpy)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(4)(H(2)O))n3, is obtained upon changing the nitrate by perchlorate anion in complex 1, where the channels are occupied by the anions. On changing the nitrate by tetrafluoroborate anion in complex 2, a novel octanuclear complex, [Cu(8)L(4)(phen)(12)](BF(4))(8).8H(2)O 4, is isolated. The coligand bpy and phen in these complexes show face-to-face (in 1,2,3,4) or edge-to-face (in 4 )pi-pi interactions forming the multidimensional supramolecular architectures. Interestingly, the appearance of edge-to-face pi-pi interactions in complex facilitates the formation of discrete octanuclear entities. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic measurements of complexes have been done. Complexes 1 and 2 show very weak antiferromagnetic (OOC-CH(2)-CH(2)-COO) and ferromagnetic coupling (mu-H(2)O). Complex 3 also shows antiferromagnetic (syn-syn mu-OCO), and ferromagnetic coupling (mu-O of the -COO group). Complex 4 with two types (syn-syn and syn-anti) of binding modes of the carboxylate group shows strong antiferromagnetic interaction.

Three new thiocyanato-bridged polymers of cadmium(II), [Cd(me4dpt)(SCN)2] n (1) [me4dpt = 3,3′-iminobis(N,N-dimethylpropylamine], [Cd(me2tn)(SCN)2] n (2) (me2tn = N,N′-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine) and [{amphyH} {Cd(SCN)3}] n (3) (ampyH = 4-aminopyridinium cation), have been synthesized and their molecular structures determined through X-ray crystallography. In Complex 1 each square pyramidal mononuclear fragment is H-bonded (N − H…S) to form a 1D supramolecular chain. Complex 2 is a 1D coordination polymer in which each distorted octahedral cadmium(II) ion is linked with the four bridging thiocyanates and one diamine. The structure of 3 reveals anionic [Cd(SCN)3]− zigzag chains arranged in an approximately hexagonal array with the 4-aminopyridinum cations occupying triangular channels. Each chain is H-bonded (N−H…N) to form a 2D supramolecular network. Upon heating, 1 and 2 melt and transform to transparent solid masses at ambient temperature over a few days. A mononuclear [Mn(mal)(bipy)(H2O)2] (1) and a dinuclear [Mn2(mal)(phen)3(H2O)2(Cl)]Cl (2) (mal=malonate dianion; bipy=2,2′-bipyridine and phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesised and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The structure of complex 1 shows that each Mn(II) is linked with one bipy, two water molecules and a malonate ligand forming distorted octahedral environment and each mononuclear fragment through H-bonding interactions form 2D supramolecular network. The structure of complex 2 comprises to an asymmetric dinuclear cation which is bridged by a single anti–anti malonate ligand and chloride anions. The two distorted Mn(II) centres are separated by large distance 6.256(3) A due to the anti–anti bridging mode. The magnetic behavior of complex 2 studied in the temperature range 300–2 K corresponds to a weak antiferromagnetic coupling through the MnOCOMn anti–anti conformation. The magnetic data were fitted based on H=−2JS1·S2, yielding the intramolecular coupling constant J=−0.35 cm−1 with g=1.92 and R=1.255×10−4.

A tetranuclear ‘stepped wise’ copper(II) complex, [Cu4(μ2-OH)2(μ3-OH)2(2,2′-bipy)4Cl2]Cl2·6H2O has been synthesized and the crystal structure of the complex redetermined. The magnetic behavior has been investigated in the temperature range 300–4.2 K based on its novel binding modes of the OH−, i.e. OH− anions bridge the copper(II) centers in a bidentate (μ-2) as well as tridentate (μ-3) fashion and this shows ferromagnetic interactions. The fit of the experimental data was made by the irreducible tensor operator formalism (ITO) using the clumag program based on the Hamiltonian; H=−J1(S1S2+S3S4)−J2(S1S4)−J3(S1S3+S2S4) and the best fit parameters, assuming the g factors are identical and J2=J3, leads to J1=22.71 cm−1; J2=J3=0.34 cm−1 and g=2.10. The magnetic results are interpreted with structural parameters.

Two novel polymeric networks of cadmium(II), [Cd2(ibn)(SeCN)4]n (1) (ibn=1,2-diamino-2-methylpropane) and [Cd(pyz)(SeCN)2]n (2) (pyz=pyrazine) have been synthesised and their molecular structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The polymer 1 consists of two 1D parallel chains of Cd(II), each having alternate tetrahedral (CdSe4) and octahedral (CdN6) Cd(II) centres bridged through selenocyanate, exhibiting symbiotic phenomena. The octahedral Cd(II) centre of one chain is linked with the tetrahedral Cd(II) centre of another chain through selenocyanate ligand resulting 1D ladder like structure. The complex 2 is a 2D network of octahedral Cd(II) (CdN4Se2) in which doubly selenocyanato bridged 1D coordination polymeric chains are linked through pyrazine ligand in a bc plane forming rectangular grid like structure.

A deep green complex, [Cu(L)(μ-Br)Br]2 (L = 1,4-diazacycloheptane) was synthesized and its crystal structure and magnetic properties have been studied. The structure determination reveals that in the binuclear unit each copper(II) occupies a distorted square pyramidal geometry in which each bridging bromine atom is simultaneously ligated in axial and equatorial positions between two adjacent copper(II) centres. The binuclear units are packed along the [101] direction. Each dimer is connected to its two nearest neighbours by two Cu–(μ-Br)⋯H–N–Cu hydrogen bonding interactions resulting in an infinite 1D ladder-like chain. The magnetic data were fitted considering the interdimer interactions using different models to obtain precise results and the susceptibility vs. temperature curve for the complex exhibits a maximum at 12 K indicating antiferromagnetic behaviour. Magneto-structural correlations have also been carried out.

CuL2C4O4 [L=ethane-1,2-diamine (en)], CuL2C4O4⋅2H2O [L=N-methylethane-1,2-diamine (meen), N-ethylethane-1,2-diamine (eten),N-propylethane-1,2-diamine (pren), N-methyl-N’-ethylethane- 1,2-diamine (meeten) andpropane-1,2-diamine (pn)], CuL2C4O4⋅0.5H2O [L=N,N’-dimethylethane- 1,2-diamine (dmeen)], CuL2C4O4⋅4H2O [L=propane-1,2-diamine (pn)]and CuL2C4O4⋅H2O[L=2-methylpropane-1,2-diamine (ibn)] have been synthesized by the addition of respective diamine to finely powdered CuC4O4⋅2H2O and their thermal studies have been carried out in the solid state. Cu(en)2C4O4 upon heating loses one molecule of diamine with shar pcolour change yielding Cu(en)C4O4 which upon further heating transforms to unidentified products. All aquated-bis-diamine species [CuL2C4O4⋅2H2O, CuL2C4O4⋅0.5H2O and CuL2C4O4⋅H2O] upon heating undergo deaquation–anation reaction in the solid state showing thermochromism and transform to CuL2C4O4, which revert on exposure to humid atmosphere (RH ∼90%). All the squarato bis-diamine species, CuL2C4O4, on further heating transform to unidentified products through the formation of CuLC4O4 as intermediates. The mono diamine species, have been isolated pyrolytically in the solid state and can be stored in a desiccator as well as in open atmosphere. They are proposed to be polymeric.

A three-dimensional supramolecular polymer of manganese(II), [{Mn(4,4′-bipy)(H2O)4}(C5O5)(H2O)2]n has been prepared and characterized by X-ray single crystal analysis. The polymer results from the mutual relationship of each coordination unit, [Mn(4,4′-bipy)(H2O)4]2+ through H-bonding between crystalline water and the encapsulated croconate dianion. Solid state thermal investigation shows stepwise elimination of water molecules and the 4,4′-bipyridine ligand.

Two novel 2D polymers of cadmium(II), [Cd(medien)(SeCN)2]n (1) (medien = N″-methyldiethylenetriamine) and [Cd2(iprdien)(SeCN)4]n (2) (iprdien = N′-isopropyldiethylenetriamine) have been synthesized and their molecular structure determined by X-ray crystallography. In complex 1 each octahedral cadmium(II) unit of a 1D coordination chain contains one pendant SeCN, binding through Se. These pendant SeCN form mutual relationships with other 1D chains through non-covalent interactions (H-bonding) giving rise to a 2D infinite sheet like structure. The molecular structure of 2 reveals a 2D infinite coordination polymer possessing alternating N-bonded octahedral and Se-bonded tetrahedral cadmium(II) centres exhibiting symbiotic phenomena. Both complexes undergo melting but complex 1 remains as a supercooled liquid in the temperature region 78–131 °C.

A one pot reaction of Cu(NO3)2, malonate dianion (mal) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe) leads to a novel 3D open framework, [{Cu3(mal)2(bpe)3(H2O)2}(NO3)2(H2O)2]n (1), composed of Cu–malonate layers pillared by bidentate bpe ligands encapsulating NO3− and water molecules in bidirectional intersecting channels; the framework's secondary building unit comprises unprecedented two hexa- and four penta-coordinate copper(II) nodes which are 6- and 4-connecting, respectively, and the magnetic properties of the complex show the highest overall ferromagnetic interaction (J = 22 cm−1) of the previously reported syn–anti carboxylate bridged complexes.

International audience; A new mixed ligand cationic–anionic nickel(II) complex, [NiL2][Ni(NCS)4(H2O)2] (1), where L = 1,4-diazepane has been synthesized by reacting nickel perchlorate with 1,4-diazepane and ammonium thiocyanate in the 1:1:2 M ratio. The complex has been characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, TGA and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Structural studies reveal the presence of two independent mononuclear complex ions in 1 viz., a square planar [NiL2]2+ and an octahedral [Ni(NCS)4(H2O)2]2− which are held together by H-bonding to form a 3D supramolecular structure in the solid state.

Two polymeric malonato-bridged manganese(II) complexes of formula [Mn(mal)(H(2)O)(2)](n)() (1) and [Mn(2)(mal)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(H(2)O)(2)](n)() (2) have been synthesized and characterized (mal = malonate dianion; 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine). The crystal structure of complex 1 was already known. Complex 2 crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2(1)/n, Z = 2, with unit cell parameters of a = 7.2974(10) A, b = 18.7715(10) A, c = 7.514(3) A, and beta = 91.743(12) degrees. The structure determination reveals that the complex [Mn(2)(mal)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(H(2)O)(2)](n)() (2) is a 3D network being composed of Mn-malonate sheets which are pillared by bidentate 4,4'-bipy spacer forming small voids. The Mn-Mn distances through Mn-mu-(O3-C8-O4)-Mn, Mn-mu(O1-C6-O2)-Mn, and Mn-mu-4,4'-bipy-Mn bridges are 5.561, 5.410, and 11.723 A, respectively. The magnetic behaviors of complexes 1 and 2 in the temperature range 300-2 K are very close, corresponding to a weak antiferromagnetic coupling. The magnetic pathways of complex 1 are through two Mn-O-C-O-Mn with anti-anti conformation and two Mn-O-C-O-Mn with syn-anti conformations and in complex 2 through all Mn-O-C-O-Mn with syn-anti conformations. Both syn-anti and anti-anti conformations create weak antiferromagnetic coupling, and the susceptibility data are fitted by the expansion series of Lines and the Curely formula for an S = 5/2 antiferromagnetic quadratic layer, based on the exchange Hamiltonian H = -Sigma(nn)()JS(i)()S(j)(). The best fit is given by the superexchange parameters J = -0.32 cm(-)(1) and g = 2.00 for complex 1 and J = -0.14 cm(-)(1), J(inter) = -0.031 cm(-)(1), and g = 2.00 for complex 2. Finally, in both the complexes there is a magnetic pathway Mn-O-C-C-C-O-Mn, and this pathway through the three carbon atoms of the malonato-bridging ligand could be considered negligible.

A unique three-dimensional coordination polymer of cadmium(II), [Cd(C4O4)(H2O)2]n1 (C4O42−⊕=⊕squarate dianion), has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal structural analysis. The molecular structure shows that each bridging squarate dianion functions as a four-fold monodentate ligand to form a cage-like channel network. The compound crystallizes in the rhombohedral system, space group R (no. 148) with a⊕=⊕b⊕=⊕11.765(6) A and c⊕=⊕14.920(7) A, γ⊕=⊕120°, Z⊕=⊕9, V⊕=⊕1788.5(15) A3. Thermal investigation reveals that the dehydrated compound is remarkably stable.
