In 2023, the first author and Vandehey proved that the largest $k$ for which the string of equalities $\lambda(n+1)=\lambda(n+2)=\cdots=\lambda(n+k)$ holds for some $n\leq x$, where $\lambda$ is the Carmichael $\lambda$ function, is bounded above by $O\left((\log x\log\log x)^2\right)$. Their method involved bounding the value of $\lambda(n + i)$ from below using the prime factorization of $n + i$ for each $i \leq k$. They then used the fact that every $\lambda(n + i)$ had to satisfy this bound. Here we improve their result by incorporating a reverse counting argument on a result of Baker and Harman on the largest prime factor of a shifted prime.

We report the results of radioactivity assays and heat leak calculations for a range of common cryogenic materials, considered for use in the QUEST-DMC superfluid 3He dark matter detector. The bolometer, instrumented with nanomechanical resonators, will be sensitive to energy deposits from dark matter interactions. Events from radioactive decays and cosmic rays constitute a significant background and must be precisely modelled, using a combination of material screening and Monte Carlo simulations. However, the results presented here are of wider interest for experiments and quantum devices sensitive to minute heat leaks and spurious events, thus we present heat leak per unit mass or surface area for every material studied. This can inform material choices for other experiments, especially if underground operation is considered where the radiogenic backgrounds will dominate even at shallow depths.

The focus of dark matter searches to date has been on Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) in the GeV/$c^2$-TeV/$c^2$ mass range. The direct, indirect and collider searches in this mass range have been extensive but ultimately unsuccessful, providing a strong motivation for widening the search outside this range. Here we describe a new concept for a dark matter experiment, employing superfluid $^3$He as a detector for dark matter that is close to the mass of the proton, of order 1 GeV/$c^2$. The QUEST-DMC detector concept is based on quasiparticle detection in a bolometer cell by a nanomechanical resonator. In this paper we develop the energy measurement methodology and detector response model, simulate candidate dark matter signals and expected background interactions, and calculate the sensitivity of such a detector. We project that such a detector can reach sub-eV nuclear recoil energy threshold, opening up new windows on the parameter space of both spin-dependent and spin-independent interactions of light dark matter candidates., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. In this paper, we look at numbers of the form $H_{r,k}:=F_{k-1}F_{r-k+2}+F_{k}F_{r-k}$. These numbers are the entries of a triangular array called the \emph{determinant Hosoya triangle} which we denote by ${\mathcal H}$. We discuss the divisibility properties of the above numbers and their primality. We give a small sieve of primes to illustrate the density of prime numbers in ${\mathcal H}$. Since the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers appear as entries in ${\mathcal H}$, our research is an extension of the classical questions concerning whether there are infinitely many Fibonacci or Lucas primes. We prove that ${\mathcal H}$ has arbitrarily large neighbourhoods of composite entries. Quantum circuits interact with the environment via several temperature-dependent degrees of freedom. Yet, multiple experiments to-date have shown that most properties of superconducting devices appear to plateau out at $T\approx 50$ mK -- far above the refrigerator base temperature. This is for example reflected in the thermal state population of qubits, in excess numbers of quasiparticles, and polarisation of surface spins -- factors contributing to reduced coherence. We demonstrate how to remove this thermal constraint by operating a circuit immersed in liquid $^3$He. This allows to efficiently cool the decohering environment of a superconducting resonator, and we see a continuous change in measured physical quantities down to previously unexplored sub-mK temperatures. The $^3$He acts as a heat sink which increases the energy relaxation rate of the quantum bath coupled to the circuit a thousand times, yet the suppressed bath does not introduce additional circuit losses or noise. Such quantum bath suppression can reduce decoherence in quantum circuits and opens a route for both thermal and coherence management in quantum processors.

The nature of the antiferromagnetic order in the heavy fermion metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, its quantum criticality, and superconductivity, which appears at low mK temperatures, remain open questions. We report measurements of the heat capacity over the wide temperature range 180 $\mu$K - 80 mK, using current sensing noise thermometry. In zero magnetic field we observe a remarkably sharp heat capacity anomaly at 1.5 mK, which we identify as an electro-nuclear transition into a state with spatially modulated electronic magnetic order of maximum amplitude 0.1$\mu_B$. We also report results of measurements in magnetic fields in the range 0 to 70 mT, applied perpendicular to the c-axis, which show eventual suppression of this order. We prove a general criterion for an irrational power series $f(z)=\displaystyle\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}a_nz^n$ with coefficients in a number field $K$ to admit the unit circle as a natural boundary. As an application, let $F$ be a finite field, let $d$ be a positive integer, let $A\in M_d(F[t])$ be a $d\times d$-matrix with entries in $F[t]$, and let $\zeta_A(z)$ be the Artin-Mazur zeta function associated to the multiplication-by-$A$ map on the compact abelian group $F((1/t))^d/F[t]^d$. We provide a complete characterization of when $\zeta_A(z)$ is algebraic and prove that it admits the circle of convergence as a natural boundary in the transcendence case. This is in stark contrast to the case of linear endomorphisms on $\mathbb{R}^d/\mathbb{Z}^d$ in which Baake, Lau, and Paskunas prove that the zeta function is always rational. Some connections to earlier work of Bell, Byszewski, Cornelissen, Miles, Royals, and Ward are discussed. Our method uses a similar technique in recent work of Bell, Nguyen, and Zannier together with certain patching arguments involving linear recurrence sequences.

A second order polynomial sequence is of Fibonacci-type $\mathcal{F}_{n}$ (Lucas-type $\mathcal{L}_{n}$) if its Binet formula has a structure similar to that for Fibonacci (Lucas) numbers. Under certain conditions these polynomials are irreducible if and only if $n$ is a prime number. For example, the Fibonacci polynomials, Pell polynomials, Fermat polynomials, Lucas polynomials, Pell-Lucas polynomials, Fermat-Lucas polynomials are irreducible when $n$ is a prime number; and Chebyshev polynomials (second kind), Morgan-Voyce polynomials (Fibonacci type), and Vieta polynomials are reducible when $n$ is a prime number. Let $F$ be a finite field of order $q$ and characteristic $p$. Let $\mathbb{Z}_F=F[t]$, $\mathbb{Q}_F=F(t)$, $\mathbb{R}_F=F((1/t))$ equipped with the discrete valuation for which $1/t$ is a uniformizer, and let $\mathbb{T}_F=\mathbb{R}_F/\mathbb{Z}_F$ which has the structure of a compact abelian group. Let $d$ be a positive integer and let $A$ be a $d\times d$-matrix with entries in $\mathbb{Z}_F$ and non-zero determinant. The multiplication-by-$A$ map is a surjective endomorphism on $\mathbb{T}_F^d$. First, we compute the entropy of this endomorphism; the result and arguments are analogous to those for the classical case $\mathbb{T}^d=\mathbb{R}^d/\mathbb{Z}^d$. Second and most importantly, we resolve the algebraicity problem for the Artin-Mazur zeta function of all such endomorphisms. In 2009, Luca and Nicolae proved that the only Fibonacci numbers whose Euler totient function is another Fibonacci number are $1,2$, and $3$. In 2015, Faye and Luca proved that the only Pell numbers whose Euler totient function is another Pell number are $1$ and $2$. Here we add to these two results and prove that for any fixed natural number $P\geq 3$, if we define the sequence $\left(u_n\right)_n$ as $u_0=0$, $u_1=1$, and $u_n=Pu_{n-1}+u_{n-2}$ for all $n\geq 2$, then the only solution to the Diophantine equation $\varphi\left(u_n\right)=u_m$ is $\varphi\left(u_1\right)=\varphi(1)=1=u_1$.

In 2013, Strauch asked how various sequences of real numbers defined from trigonometric functions such as $x_n=(\cos n)^n$ distributed themselves$\pmod 1$. Strauch's inquiry is motivated by several such distribution results. For instance, Luca proved that the sequence $x_n=(\cos \alpha n)^n\pmod 1$ is dense in $[0,1]$ for any fixed real number $\alpha$ such that $\alpha/\pi$ is irrational. Consider the coupon collector problem where each box of a brand of cereal contains a coupon and there are n different types of coupons. Suppose that the probability of a box containing a coupon of a specific type is $1/n$ and that we keep buying boxes until we collect at least $m$ coupons of each type. For $k\geq m$ call a certain coupon a $k$-ton if we see it $k$ times by the time we have seen $m$ copies of all of the coupons. Here we determine the asymptotic distribution of the number of $k$-tons after we have collected $m$ copies of each coupon for any $k$ in a restricted range, given any fixed $m$. We also determine the asymptotic joint probability distribution over such values of $k$ and the total number of coupons collected.

In a neutral system such as liquid helium-3, transport of mass, heat, and spin provide information analogous to electrical counterparts in metals, superconductors and topological materials. Of particular interest is transport in strongly confining channels of height approaching the superfluid coherence length, where new quantum states are found and excitations bound to surfaces and edges should be present. Here we report on the thermal conduction of helium-3 in a 1.1~$\mu$m high microfabricated channel. In the normal state we observe a diffusive thermal conductivity that is approximately temperature independent, consistent with recent work on the interference of bulk and boundary scattering. In the superfluid state we measure diffusive thermal transport in the absence of thermal counterflow. An anomalous thermal response is also detected in the superfluid which we suggest may arise from a flux of surface excitations., Comment: A supplement is available. We study growth rates of generalised Fibonacci sequences of a particular structure. These sequences are constructed from choosing two real numbers for the first two terms and always having the next term be either the sum or the difference of the two preceding terms where the pluses and minuses follow a certain pattern. In 2012, McLellan proved that if the pluses and minuses follow a periodic pattern and $G_n$ is the $n$th term of the resulting generalised Fibonacci sequence, then \begin{equation*} \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}|G_n|^{1/n} \end{equation*} exists. We extend her results to recurrences of the form $G_{m+2} = \alpha_m G_{m+1} \pm G_{m}$ if the choices of pluses and minuses, and of the $\alpha_m$ follow a balancing word type pattern., Comment: 23 pages

This article provides an overview, primarily from an experimental perspective, of recent progress and future prospects in using helium to realize a range of quantum materials of generic interest, by "top-down" and "bottom-up" nanotechnology. We can grow model systems to realise new quantum states of matter, and explore key issues in condensed matter physics. In the language of cold atomic gases, two dimensional and confined 3He and 4He provide "quantum simulators", with the potential to uncover new emergent quantum states. These include: strictly 2D Fermi system with Mott-Hubbard transition; interacting coupled 2D fermion-boson system; heavy fermion quantum criticality; ideal 2D frustrated ferromagnetism; 2D quantum spin liquid; intertwined superfluid and density wave order with emergent large symmetry; topological mesoscopic superfluidity (new materials and emergent excitations)., Comment: 40 pages, 15 figures

Topological superfluid $^3$He, with unconventional spin-triplet p-wave pairing, provides a model system for topological superconductors, which have attracted significant interest through potential applications in topologically protected quantum computing. In topological insulators and quantum Hall systems, the surface/edge states, arising from bulk-surface correspondence and the momentum space topology of the band structure, are robust. Here we demonstrate that in topological superconductors the surface Andreev bound states, which depend on the momentum space topology of the emergent order parameter, are fragile with respect to the details of surface scattering. We confine superfluid $^3$He within a cavity of height comparable to the Cooper pair diameter. We precisely determine the superfluid transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ and the suppression of the superfluid energy gap, for different scattering conditions tuned in situ, and compare to the predictions of quasi-classical theory. We discover that surface magnetic scattering leads to unexpectedly large suppression of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$, corresponding to an increased density of low energy bound states., Comment: Main text: 10 pages + 4 figures; Supplementary information: 33 pages, 14 figures

One of the most studied models of SAT is random SAT. In this model, instances are composed from clauses chosen uniformly randomly and independently of each other. This model may be unsatisfactory in that it fails to describe various features of SAT instances, arising in real-world applications. Various modifications have been suggested to define models of industrial SAT. Here, we focus mainly on the aspect of community structure. Namely, here the set of variables consists of a number of disjoint communities, and clauses tend to consist of variables from the same community. Thus, we suggest a model of random industrial SAT, in which the central generalization with respect to random SAT is the additional community structure. There has been a lot of work on the satisfiability threshold of random $k$-SAT, starting with the calculation of the threshold of $2$-SAT, up to the recent result that the threshold exists for sufficiently large $k$. In this paper, we endeavor to study the satisfiability threshold for the proposed model of random industrial SAT. Our main result is that the threshold in this model tends to be smaller than its counterpart for random SAT. Moreover, under some conditions, this threshold even vanishes., Comment: 32 pages

In this paper, we apply the Turan sieve and the simple sieve developed by R. Murty and the first author to study problems in random graph theory. In particular, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the probability of a graph on n vertices having diameter 2 (or diameter 3 in the case of bipartite graphs) with edge probability p(n) where the edges are chosen independently . An interesting feature revealed in these results is that the Turan sieve and the simple sieve `almost completely' complement each other. As a corollary to our result, we note that the probability of a random graph having diameter 2 approaches 1 as n approaches infinity for constant edge probability p(n)=1/2. This is an appendix of a shorter version of this paper.

We demonstrate the fabrication of $\sim$1.08 $\mu$m deep microfluidic cavities with characteristic size as large as 7 mm $\times$ 11 mm or 11 mm diameter, using a silicon$-$glass anodic bonding technique that does not require posts to act as separators to define cavity height. Since the phase diagram of $^3$He is significantly altered under confinement, posts might act as pinning centers for phase boundaries. The previous generation of cavities relied on full wafer-bonding which is more prone to failure and requires dicing post-bonding, whereas the these cavities are made by bonding a pre-cut piece of Hoya SD-2 glass to a patterned piece of silicon in which the cavity is defined by etching. Anodic bonding was carried out at 425 $^{\circ}$C with 200 V, and we observe that pressurizing the cavity to failure ($>$ 30 bar pressure) results in glass breaking, rather than the glass-silicon bond separation. In this article, we discuss the detailed fabrication of the cavity, its edges, and details of the junction between the coin silver fill line and the silicon base of the cavity that enables a low internal-friction joint. This feature is important for mass coupling torsional oscillator experimental assays of the superfluid inertial contribution where a high quality factor ($Q$) improves frequency resolution. The surface preparation that yields well-characterized smooth surfaces to eliminate pinning sites, the use of transparent glass as a cover permitting optical access, low temperature capability and attachment of pressure-capable ports for fluid access may be features that are important in other applications., Comment: 10 figures

Here we give a lower bound of the Mahler measure on a set of polynomials that are "almost" reciprocal. Here "almost" reciprocal means that the outermost coefficients of each polynomial mirror each other in proportion, while this pattern breaks down for the innermost coefficients.

The influence of confinement on the topological phases of superfluid 3He is studied using the torsional pendulum method. We focus on the phase transition between the chiral A-phase and the time-reversal-invariant B-phase, motivated by the prediction of a spatiallymodulated (stripe) phase at the A-B phase boundary. We confine superfluid 3He to a single 1.08 {\mu}m thick nanofluidic cavity incorporated into a high-precision torsion pendulum, and map the phase diagram between 0.1 and 5.6 bar. We observe only small supercooling of the A-phase, in comparison to bulk or when confined in aerogel. This has a non-monotonic pressure dependence, suggesting that a new intrinsic B-phase nucleation mechanism operates under confinement, mediated by the putative stripe phase. Both the phase diagram and the relative superfluid fraction of the A and B phases, show that strong coupling is present at all pressures, with implications for the stability of the stripe phase., Comment: 6 figures, 1 table + supplemental information

We study the random Fibonacci tree, which is an infinite binary tree with non-negative integers at each node. The root consists of the number 1 with a single child, also the number 1. We define the tree recursively in the following way: if x is the parent of y, then y has two children, namely |x-y| and x+y. This tree was studied by Benoit Rittaud who proved that any pair of integers a,b that are coprime occur as a parent-child pair infinitely often. We extend his results by determining the probability that a random infinite walk in this tree contains exactly one pair (1,1), that being at the root of the tree. Also, we give tight upper and lower bounds on the number of occurrences of any specific coprime pair (a,b) at any given fixed depth in the tree.

Graphite is a model system for the study of three-dimensional electrons and holes in the magnetic quantum limit, in which the charges are confined to the lowest Landau levels. We report magneto-transport measurements in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T, which resolve the collapse of two density wave states in two, electron and hole, Landau levels at 52.3 and 54.2 T respectively. We report evidence for a commensurate density wave at 47.1 T in the electron Landau level. The theoretical modelling of these results predicts that the ultra-quantum limit is entered above 73.5 T. This state is an insulator, and we discuss its correspondence to the "metallic" state reported earlier. We propose that this (interaction-induced) insulating phase supports surface states that carry no charge or spin within the planes, but does however support charge transport out of plane.

We discuss the mass transport of a degenerate Fermi liquid $^3$He film over a rough surface, and the film momentum relaxation time, in the framework of theoretical predictions. In the mesoscopic r\'egime, the anomalous temperature dependence of the relaxation time is explained in terms of the interference between elastic boundary scattering and inelastic quasiparticle-quasiparticle scattering within the film. We exploit a quasiclassical treatment of quantum size effects in the film in which the surface roughness, whose power spectrum is experimentally determined, is mapped into an effective disorder potential within a film of uniform thickness. Confirmation is provided by the introduction of elastic scattering centres within the film. We model further studies on $^3$He confined in nanofluidic sample chambers with lithographically defined surface roughness. The improved understanding of surface roughness scattering may impact on enhancing the conductivity in thin metallic films., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We have made pressure and NMR measurements during the evolution of phase separation in solid helium isotopic mixtures. Our observations indicate clearly all three stages of the homogeneous nucleation - growth process: 1) creation of nucleation sites; 2) growth of the new-phase component at these nucleation sites; and 3) coarsening: the dissolution of sub-critical droplets with the consequent further late-stage growth of the super-critical droplets. The time exponent for the coarsening, a = 1/3, is consistent with the conserved order parameter Lifshitz-Slezov evaporation-condensation mechanism., Comment: Submitted to PRL

We have developed a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer with a series tuned input circuit for measurements on samples at millikelvin temperatures based on an integrated two-stage superconducting quantum interference device current sensor, with an energy sensitivty e = 26 +/-1 h when operated at 1.4K. To maximise the sensitivity both the NMR pickup coil and tuning capacitor need to be cooled, and the tank circuit parameters should be chosen to equalise the contributions from circulating current noise and voltage noise in the SQUID. A noise temperature TN = 7 +/-2 mK was measured, at a frequency of 0.884 MHz, with the circuit parameters close to optimum., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures.
